Whether you have just finished a walk through Retiro Park or are taking a break from the luxury boutiques of the Salamanca district, finding the right spot for a coffee is essential.
The neighborhood seamlessly blends traditional Spanish café culture with the modern specialty coffee movement. You are just as likely to find a century-old bar serving strong espresso as you are a minimalist roastery perfecting the flat white. This diversity makes the area a true paradise for coffee lovers and tired travelers alike.
However, the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming, especially if you are looking for a specific vibe or a quiet place to work. You do not want to waste precious sightseeing time wandering the streets in search of a decent brew. Knowing where the locals go versus the tourist traps makes all the difference.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and proximity to the monument itself. We have curated a list that ranges from grab-and-go counters to plush lounges where you can sit for hours. Every entry offers something unique, whether it is the bean origin, the pastries, or the people-watching.
We have considered practical factors like Wi-Fi availability, seating comfort, and price points to suit different needs. Whether you need a quick energy boost before hitting the museums or a cozy corner for a business meeting, there is a spot for you here.
Below, you will find the definitive list of the best places to enjoy coffee near this historic gate. Each option has been selected for its commitment to quality and its distinct contribution to the local café scene.

Mert Yüksel★★★★☆
It's in a very good location. Their coffees are pretty good. As far as I can see, they use fresh coffee instead of machine coffee. However, the prices are quite high. Almost twice the price of a standard cafe. They also charge extra for to-go coffees. I would never expect something like this from such a place. Staff serve very slow. I waited exactly 15-20 minutes for croissants and coffee.
Jessica Hernandez★★☆☆☆
Well at least the bathroom was clean. I don’t know how this bakery has such high ratings. Sunday at 3pm and hardly anyone in shop. The croissant was flat and stale, and was 4.50!! Go somewhere else.
Iva Jandrlic★☆☆☆☆
Coffee cup lids are awful. Most of our coffees spilled even before we took the first sip. Absolutely unacceptable for the price we paid. Wouldn't recommend 👎
Angel Mendez★★★★★
What a terrific experience I had. The best hot chocolate, best Almond Croissant ever and best Palmera. (Heart shape dessert. Awesome and friendly staff. Their names are Sima and Alberto. A must to visit when in town. I’ll be back tomorrow for sure.

We stopped by for a coffee, and personally I wanted to grab a good éclair. Unfortunately, éclairs were rather not good. Coffee was also kinda disappointing.

I had a wonderful experience at Cappuccino in Madrid.
The atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome.
I would especially like to thank Elham and Ani. They were incredibly helpful, professional, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Their kindness, attention to detail, and positive attitude made our visit even more enjoyable.
Excellent service like this is what makes guests want to return. I highly recommend Cappuccino Madrid and look forward to visiting again.
Nailya Singer★★★★★
All my 3 days in Madrid I came here. Tried a lot of places, but always returned. The staff is really professional, well trained. Loved it! They've even put the sign 'reservado', when I went to the toilet (they never did it in other places).
The food was delicious, the atmosphere super chill with nice musics.
Zsolt Szemerszky★★★★★
Cappuccino in Madrid is always a great choice for a healthy breakfast. The coffee is excellent; rich, strong, and topped with a perfectly creamy foam. They also offer an impressive selection of fresh juices and a wide variety of breakfast options, making it easy to start the day on a fresh and energizing note.
The only downside is the white toast served with some breakfast dishes, which feels slightly out of place in an otherwise health-focused menu. A whole-grain alternative would fit much better. Yes, the bread felt cheap and unhealthy.
Aside from that small detail, the ambiance is pleasant and the service is very attentive, making Cappuccino a reliable and enjoyable breakfast spot in Madrid.
Felix Maximovich★★★★★
Honestly, I’ll start by saying that the food isn’t the strongest part of Cappuccino, but everything else more than makes up for it.
The drinks are very good, the view is easily one of the best in Madrid, and the ambience is on another level. It’s one of those places where the overall experience is much more than just the food.
The staff are also incredible, especially my friend Jose, who is always amazing and makes sure everything is taken care of. His service is genuinely exceptional, and honestly, if it wasn’t for him, my review probably wouldn’t be quite as positive.
For me, the atmosphere, location, drinks and especially the service completely compensate for the food being just average. I’ve had some really enjoyable experiences here and will definitely continue coming back.
5 stars for the overall experience!
Ahmed Bu Asali★★★☆☆
We visited Cappuccino in Madrid, Spain, and overall it was a lovely experience. The ambience is very nice with strong beachy, summer vibes. The outdoor seating area is amazing, and the indoor area is just as impressive—very elegant, polished, and classy. It gives off a Monaco / Saint-Tropez–style vibe, which makes the experience feel quite special.
For food, we ordered the Margherita pizza, which was good, though I expected it to be a bit more flavorful. We also tried the chicken club sandwich, which was really nice, but the portions are relatively small compared to the prices.
We also ordered a drink and a latte, and both were outstanding. I would especially recommend their coffee drinks—the coffee beans they use are rich, flavorful, and very enjoyable (not sure which beans they use, but the quality really shows).
Overall, the experience was great, mainly for the ambience and coffee. I would definitely like to visit other Cappuccino branches in different locations. A solid 3.5 to 4 out of 5 experience. ☕🍕✨

I’m so happy I found this place, it’s my favorite coffee spot in Madrid! The menu was amazing with tons of options compared to your typical place in Madrid and they definitely delivered. The coffee was amazing, and definitely settled every coffee craving I had. Would definitely come back!
Olena Zhukova★★★★★
My new favourite coffee place in Madrid. Everything is just perfect. Had spotted it even before they opened and immediately understood that the place was going to be amazing! Tried their matcha and carrot cakes, which are absolutely delicious!
Deniisa RP★★★★★
little cute coffee shop!!! very good matcha and nice spot
Ximena Barahona Campos★★★★★
The barista was so nice, they had carrot cake to try and it was amazing! The matcha and the iced vanilla late were very good!!! ☕️ 💌 I will be coming back🥰
Reem shawush★★★★☆
I came here for a coffee, but then saw the matcha and the whisk and decided to go for that! As the annoying matcha barista I am I asked to see the powder because i’m tired of getting milky matcha. It was very high quality, and had a smooth taste with no clumps. I would ask for extra matcha if you like yours strong! There was a little wait but wasn’t too bad. America the barista was an angel and so sweet and understanding.

Cozy and aesthetically pleasing place. There’s no Wi-Fi or phone service, which can be inconvenient but it also encourages you to disconnect and actually connect with the people around you. The cheesecake was delicious, but the red velvet cake was the standout. we loved it so much that we ordered another one.
eliane robinson★★★★★
Lovely cafe. Very beautifully decorated. I ate a toast that was amazing. 10/10
Great vibes, calm and comfortable.
Rana Soltani★★☆☆☆
Unfortunately, I wasn’t satisfied with my experience here.
When we arrived, the upstairs area was full, so they suggested we sit downstairs. We agreed, but the downstairs area had a very strong artificial air freshener smell, probably because of humidity or something nearby. The smell was overwhelming and honestly uncomfortable to breathe.
The lighting downstairs was also extremely dim and unpleasant. Most of the chairs and sofas didn’t feel very stable or comfortable either. I actually had to change my chair because it felt loose and unsafe.
The coffee arrived spilled into the saucer, and the sugar packet next to it was wet and unusable.
The staff also didn’t really speak English, which made communication a bit difficult.
On top of that, the cake I ordered arrived much later than the coffee, so by the time it came, my drink was already almost cold.
That said, the cake itself and the nachos we ordered tasted good.
But unfortunately, the coffee was not memorable at all, and overall the experience was disappointing.
Monika Dominguez★★★★★
amazing place! very cozy and picture perfect! we ordered brunch set menu and we loved it!

Ok Luz is a VIBE. Grandma core. Couches and mismatched furniture. Candle light energy. The cappuccino was funnnn. The toast was good. They only let you sit in the main area if you get food, but the food is good & cheap. The bar is also cute.
I sat here and journaled 🙂

We had excellent gluten-free meals, protein waffle and tacos de tinga. I’ve not been able to enjoy a good waffle in a long time, and this was just perfect! The tacos de tinga were super flavourful. We highly recommend!
David Soeima★★★★★
Great place. Great benedict toast, but the protein cacao power was amazing. Got another one in the end.
Simple but very good and effective
Zachary Naun★☆☆☆☆
Yesterday was the first time I went to the cafe. I enjoyed my coffee but it was an uncomfortable experience due to the staff. One waitress was visibly upset, speaking in an aggressive manner, and actually threw or banged something against one of the tables, startling me. The cafe itself is cool and the coffee is good, but I don't think I'll be coming back.
G P★★★☆☆
Overpriced poshy girly place for fashioning a coffee on your training leggings with your cool gym female mates.
Unless you really are in need of this mood, avoid spending 20€ on a coffee and a piece of bread with "healthy" stuff on top
Yazi★☆☆☆☆
The dishes are very small for what they’re worth. We asked if it were possible to change the turkey to chicken in a sandwich, they said yes but ended up charging 5€ extra for it. 18€ for a very small sandwich that wasn’t tasty. If you sit inside, it’ll feel like you’re sitting in a gym. Yoga people wait inside there next to the eating tables to attend their fitness class inside the place.

Highly recommend this restaurant. Avoid going after 9pm as the line gets long. All the tapas we choose were so so delicious and they produce the desserts there as well and it’s so nice to see, very comfortable space as well and the staff was nice, it’s a walk in place

Beautiful simple food done right. Each tapas was full of flavour and the team here full of passion. Thank you

Service and food were great! We came without a reservation during lunch time and they kindly managed to seat us.
Best batatas bravas and croquetas we had in Madrid!

This café has that cute, cozy, local vibe. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the staff were very kind and friendly. It has a warm, simple, "homey" atmosphere! Natural pear and lemon juice, a delicacy. We served Tortilla de patatas hecha con huevos amperos, pan con tomate y ensaladita.❤️

This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.
Dimitri Katsabanis★★★★★
Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.
Amit Pradhan★★★★★
We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.

What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid

Nice spot for a relaxed family coffee break. The coffee was good, and the service was friendly and welcoming. The location is ok in Madrid centre, making it an easy place to stop by. The churros with chocolate were ok, though not the best I’ve had. Overall, a pleasant experience and a good café to visit for coffee and atmosphere.

It was officially racist. I asked for 2 coffees 10 minutes ago (English), the waiter looked at us and left. He didn't come for 5 minutes. He took the orders of 3 tables without taking my order. Be nice to tourists.

I loved this place. Lee the waiter was kind, professional, friendly and helpful in describing the deferent options. Fantastic service. The lady behind the counter prepares delicious abundant sandwiches. The food was always fresh, delicious and plentiful. Don't miss this place on Calle Alcala.

Very tasty carrot cake, nice fresh juice and delicious infusion de manzanilla. Very surprised with low rates. They deserve better.

It could be better I think, because the croissant was burnt a little, and the coffee taste was not so good. Also, it's pretty expensive, 9.5 euro for everything.

Seems to be often messy with long queues but the sandwiches are actually really good, and same goes for the tropical smoothie we had multiple times. We once had a chocolate cake that was also really good. What we appreciated most is that they have the allergens printed out on each product, and they were available to make sure about specific things. Good prices.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

This place is amazing! I tried both the Bolivian and the Indian espresso they had to offer and they were perfect shots. There was not a hint of bitterness and I was truly able to enjoy the notes of the coffee. I also had to try their cinnamon roll and it was baked perfectly. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed visiting with them and learning more about their coffee. They also roast their own coffee which is such an amazing thing. This place is a must visit for coffee lovers in Madrid!

Good coffee but skip the Turkish eggs, it was the worst I have eaten in the city. Not with poached or soft boiled egg, it was almost a raw egg, no salt or herbs, tasteless sauce. Couldn’t eat it

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near Puerta de Alcalá
To make the most of your coffee experience in this upscale area of Madrid, it helps to understand the local customs and timing. While the neighborhood is welcoming, knowing a few insider tips will help you blend in and secure the best seats. Here is how to navigate the scene like a professional.
1. Understand the Local Coffee Lingo
While specialty coffee shops speak the international language of flat whites and cold brews, traditional spots stick to Spanish terms. If you want a milky coffee, order a café con leche. For a stronger, smaller hit, ask for a cortado. If you simply want black coffee, request an Americano.
2. Timing is Everything
The area gets flooded with shoppers and tourists between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and again during the evening paseo. If you want a quiet table or a spot on the terrace, aim for the mid-afternoon lull between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Mornings before 10:00 AM are also generally peaceful.
3. Terrace vs. Interior Pricing
In Spain, it is often more expensive to sit at a table outside than to stand at the bar or sit inside. Check the price list before you sit down. If you are on a budget but want the view, grab a quick espresso at the bar inside first, then linger outside for photos without occupying a paid table.
4. Don’t Skip the Sweet Pairings
Coffee culture here is deeply tied to pastries. While a plain espresso is great, you are missing out if you don’t try a palmera de chocolate (chocolate palmier) or a napolitana (filled pastry). Many of the traditional cafes bake these in-house daily.
5. Wi-Fi and Workspace Etiquette
Not all cafes near the monument are laptop-friendly. Traditional Spanish bars often discourage laptop use during peak meal hours. If you need to work, look for the specialty coffee shops mentioned above, which generally have reliable Wi-Fi and communal tables. Be sure to order regularly if you plan to stay for a while.
The area around Puerta de Alcalá offers more than just a caffeine fix; it provides a moment to pause and soak in the grandeur of Madrid. The clinking of cups on saucers, the murmur of conversation, and the view of the limestone gate create an atmosphere that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the city.
Whether you choose a modern specialty brew or a traditional roast, taking the time to sit and enjoy it is a ritual worth savoring. As you leave your café of choice and step back onto the bustling streets, you will carry with you a true taste of the Madrileño lifestyle.
