12 Best Cafes Near Real Jardín Botánico

Sitting down for a coffee after wandering through the lush, manicured grounds of the Real Jardín Botánico is one of Madrid’s most civilized pleasures. The botanical garden, a serene pocket of biodiversity tucked beside the Prado Museum, offers a sensory overload of colors, textures, and fragrances. Once you exit the gates, the transition from quiet nature to bustling urban energy can be jarring.

Luckily, the surrounding neighborhoods—from the literary quarter of Huertas to the upscale streets of Jerónimos—are packed with exceptional coffee culture. Whether you are craving a traditional Spanish café con leche or a meticulously poured single-origin filter brew, the area caters to every palate. The challenge isn’t finding a cafe; it’s choosing the right one for your mood, energy levels, and company.

This guide curates the absolute best coffee experiences within a short walking distance of the garden. We have prioritized quality of the roast, atmosphere, and proximity to ensure you don’t waste steps on a mediocre cup. These are spaces where locals linger over newspapers, remote workers find focus, and tourists catch their breath in comfort.

Madrid’s coffee scene has evolved dramatically over the last decade, moving away from dark, over-roasted beans toward lighter, specialty profiles. However, tradition still holds strong in the historic cafes that line the nearby avenues. We have included a mix of both worlds to give you a comprehensive look at the local culture.

Before diving into the list, consider your timing. Many of the trendier specialty spots open later in the morning, while traditional cafeterías are perfect for an early breakfast. Also, note that seating can be competitive on weekends, especially for terraces with views of the tree-lined Paseo del Prado.

Below, you will find a handpicked selection of spots that consistently deliver on quality and service. Each entry offers something unique, whether it is the interior design, the pastry selection, or the barista’s expertise. Use this list to plan your perfect coffee break after exploring the flora.

I loved it here. The vibe is amazing, my favourite so far in Barcelona and Madrid. Lots of seating options, big windows, comfortable-looking chairs, tables for working or visiting. The decaffeinado vanilla iced latte was delicious, although the apple cake was not my favourite, but that's personal preference as I was expecting a coffee cake texture. So that's my mistake for not looking closely ahead of time. The lemon coffee cake looked delicious. I would absolutely love to come back and sit in. The service was lovely and worked with my broken Spanish.

Best brownie I ever eat!🩷also very good tea and cozy vibe! 🙂

Great salads, great tostadas. Prices are amazingly affordable. The salmon salad was the best! Great, affordable place for lunch after a morning at Parque Retiro or El Prado.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This little coffee shop is such a hidden gem! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee and either relaxing or getting some work done. The coffee itself is excellent—smooth, rich, and clearly made with care. What really stood out, though, was the service. Gloria, the host, was absolutely wonderful. She greeted me with a genuine smile and made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. She took the time to recommend a drink based on what I like and even checked in to make sure everything was just right. You can tell she truly cares about every guest’s experience. Between the quality of the drinks and Gloria’s warmth, this spot is definitely worth visiting. I’ll be coming back for sure!
Susan Baker★★★★★
Excellent coffee! Cozy! Just two blocks South of El Prado, Eugene and his team provide excellent service, delicious food and pastries, and chill atmosphere for breakfast, lunch or early dinner. The early dinner (arrive by eight for 8:30 closing) is a plus when you don’t want to wait ‘til restaurants reopen for dinner after 8:30, and if you don’t want to just eat tapas again between five and eight. Includes super fresh salads, sandwiches, and pastries. It’s our favorite place in the stretch between el Prado and Atocha Train Station on the edge of the delightful Las Huertas neighborhood. Tómatelo con calma!

Great small coffee shop with plants. The coffee was very good, fast and polite service. You can buy a plant as well. Sweets, croissants and mini sandwiches are also available, small but good selection. Perfect place for your morning or afternoon coffee.
Ondřej Sklenář★★★★★
Nice cosy cafe. Very good coffee and kind ladies there.
Yu-Ting★★★★☆
I enjoyed the coffee. However, I didn’t like the white chocolate pistachio cookie. The cookie was hard and although you can see bits of pistachio inside you can only taste the white chocolate. I would definitely like to come again and try a different dessert. The person working there was hospitable and even though I came in thirty minutes before closing they still provided service with a smile. Combined with the environment which included potted plants available for sale, this was a comfortable shop to have a coffee.
Toma Nicodin★★★★★
In few words | Very nice and cozy tiny specialty coffee place. The staff is amazingly attentive and the coffee is tasty. It's mainly for coffee to go since it is quite small but if you manage to sit down inside you will enjoy a peaceful moment to sip through your coffee surrounded by plants and beautiful decoration.
Emre Parlak★★★★☆
Coffee was average and they should definitely change the oatmilk they use, because it's sourness really doesn't go well with espresso. The avocado toast could also use more seasoning. On the other side, very nice interior with plants. The chocolate cake also tasted amazing.

Good specialty coffee, simple, yet incredibly good food! I keep coming back for their salad bowl with shredded chicken, tomatoes, edamame & pecans - it’s so balanced in taste and in ingredients💔 Tried their sweet options as well - the oats, the homemade nut butter toast, the pancakes - all of them are worthy as well. Definitely recommend this place, I go there super often myself🫶🏻
Christian Breitkreutz★★★★★
Very nice coffee shop with tasty pastries and nice staff. Good place to hang out after visiting one of the two big museums to rest your legs and relax. You can also stop for breakfast before you move on. They have sweet and savory snacks.
Natalia Sarabia★★★★★
Everything we tried was so good. The carrot cake is not pictured but also delicious. We thought the cacio e pepe scrambled eggs were so creative! The place in itself is so creative. It’s everything we love about Madrid. Saved as a favorite and will be back for another iced latte with hazelnut syrup.
Robert Schneider★★★★★
Good Coffee, nice people, Great Breakfast! Also nice Place and General. Like the Mix with the Books. What I don’t like is the cheap vinyl floor. I bet the original surface a few layers beloe would have charm
Doğa Can★★★★★
Had the chicken sandwich with spicy mayo and a cold brew both were really beautiful. Love their branding and the overall atmosphere but for me the moment this place became a “5 Star” establishment was the moment is stepped in the bathroom. It’s a clean and comfortable bathroom but the wall art made my day. I wont give away and spoil the experience for you, but all I can say that you will be well entertained 😌

One of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had! Perfectly cooked poached eggs. The miso and sichuan oil were a great combination and can’t miss it. We also had the avocado toast with truffle sauce which was great as well. The açaí smoothie was fresh and refreshing too. We ended with an almond cake which was awesome, highly recommend this place!
Kremena Ivanova★★★★★
Absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was wonderful, warm and welcoming, and our waitress was absolutely lovely and made the whole experience even better. She was so friendly, attentive and kind. I had the bacon sandwich and it was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place! ❤️
Kamakshi Matai★★★★★
Thanks Jason for the brilliant service. The Cantonese style scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had and the ‘soft’ cortado as this cafe cutely calls it was perfection. Brazilian coffee beans brewed just right. Come a bit earlier in the day so you don’t need to wait in line. Interiors are also so charming.
Brianna Pedraza★★★★★
Busy restaurant and there can be a line, but don’t stress and don’t let that deter you from waiting. The wait doesn’t take long! The service here is fantastic, quick and genuine. Very good food and coffee as well. We were very happy with this place and would came back! Thanks to server Cami for helping us have a good experience here
Iryna Shaitanova★★★★☆
Beautiful place with a truly magical atmosphere. I absolutely loved the interior design, the vibe, and the overall feeling of the space. It is one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed and want to stay longer. The staff and service were also excellent, very friendly and attentive. We especially loved the matcha with coconut water. It was delicious and definitely something I would order again. As for the food, it was just okay. We tried the scrambled eggs with avocado and the eggs Benedict. The brunch dishes were decent, but not particularly memorable. Still, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere and would love to try some of the pastries or cakes next time.

The food was absolutely delicious, especially the sea bass ,onion soup, huevos rotos with Iberian ham and truffle risotto. Sebastian was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
When we arrived they didn't serve coffee because their coffee machine was broken. But we stayed to drink a lemonade. It's very nice inside, they have many tables. Avara has a few tables for 2 people near the place.
Dražen Grbić★★★★★
We had: Tuna tartar - it was awesome with all the sides Some steak - meat was really good, but side was not enough, and not so tasty (some kind of deep fried potato) Desert - Carrot cake and Pavlova, perfect 😍 Service was okay, but their English wasn't, at the end we manage to comunicate. For sure it's place with really good food and that's what matters.
Lets Go★★★★★
Walk in customers on a cold afternoon after visit to Prado museum. Was happy that food was being served from 1230pm onwards. Enjoyed the hearty chicken soup and the flavourful pumpkin soup.
Mauro Deffendini★★★★☆
Murillo Café feels like one of those places you don’t expect to find outside Venezuela. I tried several things and everything was on point, but the polvorosa de pollo really stood out. It instantly took me back to Venezuela, where I had it many times growing up, pure comfort food, the kind that brings memories with every bite. The tequeños were light and crispy, not oily, and clearly made with care. The numpias were another favorite, crunchy, flavorful, and even better dipped in soy sauce, which adds a subtle Asian twist without taking away from what makes them special. The sliders were kind of normal, nothing special. What truly completes the experience is the attention. It’s warm, natural, and welcoming, making you feel at home without trying too hard. Murillo Café delivers authenticity, nostalgia, and genuinely good food.

Very tasty, fresh dishes. Cute cat on the coffee was an extra nice touch. The food sizes were good value for money too. Was pleasing to see a fully accessible (and clean) gender neutral toilet too. Mind you, I don't think any of the inside seating is wheelchair friendly, but outside is. We would happily come back again. Thank you!

Fantastic brunch spot! Fresh, high-quality ingredients, excellent specialty coffee, and beautifully presented dishes. Friendly service, a great atmosphere, and outstanding value. One of the best breakfast and brunch experiences in Madrid. Highly recommended! What a breakfast in Madrid!
Brooke Sanders★★★★★
This spot is amazing! If you’re looking for whole fruits, whole vegetables, and really great fresh squeezed juices come here! Everyone is friendly & the service is quick. Every single thing I tried was delicious. Gluten-free options bread, crêpes, and pancakes, and absolutely delicious coffee and tea. I tried something every single day I was in Madrid because I loved it so much.!!

Had brunch here recently. Overall, it was alright and the atmosphere was nice, but I was a bit disappointed with the cinnamon roll as it didn’t taste fresh. The rest was okay, but I expected better, especially for the pastries.
Magdalena Jamroziak★★★★★
A small, cozy spot with healthy and delicious food—perfect for lunch or a mid-morning bite. We had to wait a bit for a table, but it was definitely worth it. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the food feels fresh and thoughtfully prepared. A great place to relax and enjoy something wholesome.

El Botánico was recommended by a local and it did not disappoint! Both Julio and Felipe were a delight in making a great experience. If you’re in the area, I would recommend passing by for the experience. Both the croquetas and rodaballo are worth trying.

This café has that cute, cozy, local vibe. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the staff were very kind and friendly. It has a warm, simple, "homey" atmosphere! Natural pear and lemon juice, a delicacy. We served Tortilla de patatas hecha con huevos amperos, pan con tomate y ensaladita.❤️
Lynn Tan★★★★★
This is a charming cute cafe with lovely food, nice ambience, good value for money & a very friendly host. The potato leek cold soup and quinoa salad is amazing, and the fish pie was simply delish. To pair that with sangria / tinto de verano tops it all.
Dimitri Katsabanis★★★★★
Pristine service from Fernando, followed by the best lentil soup I’ve had in my life! The most unique thing here is the revolving menu on a daily basis. This component made me feel like I was 8 years old again at my Abuela’s house. Everything we ordered was simply majestic and this is a place that deserves much more accolades.
Amit Pradhan★★★★★
We went to Matilda after reading the reviews and will say that this place does surprise you . The food quality , taste and preparation is top class. We managed to get a table as we went in early but I can tell you that it is frequented by locals and tourists alike . We had avocado toast and a Spanish omelette and both were top class. Will definitely recommend to people visiting that area.
michel lavigne★★★★★
What a nice gem to find. It is a small cozy place. The waiter was wounderful a spoke very well English and French. He was paying attention to every little detail to make sure we had an extraordinary experience (which we had). We started with salad and gazpacho. I normally am not crazy about gazpacho but this one had watermelon in it, which intrigued me. What a great discovery!!! It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. We also had meat balls in tomato sauce and ham. Food & service were extraordinary. Very well priced and potions are generous. Best sangria I ever had. We were too full for desserts that looked fabulous on other tables. A must go place in Madrid

Had a great experience at this cafe. We had coffee and Diet Coke and split a piece of homemade bizcocho which was very delicious. Moist and buttery and a good size. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and we lacked nothing. We had a coffee on the way to an exhibit at Caixa forum. What a great decision. When the weather is warmer they have a nice little sidewalk terrace which also seems tempting.

A good spot to grab lunch. I recommend the grilled chicken salad and the shrimp BaoBuns. We also tried the mini kebabs, chicken quesadillas and the guacamole. Everything was delicious and got prepared quite quickly. Seating on the patio includes additional charge.

I highly recommend the baked eggs at this restaurant; they are truly innovative and delicious. The mushroom variety is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a delightful experience akin to Alfredo sauce, but with eggs instead of chicken. Additionally, I must say that I enjoyed one of the best coffees I’ve ever had there. It was so exceptional that I considered purchasing extra coffee to take home. Unfortunately, they do not sell coffee beans, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for brunch, as it offers a unique and satisfying dining experience.

We Tried baked eggs with mushrooms / specials with sweet potato and baked egg with ham. The portion size is more than enough for one. Waiters were lovely. Had to wait a bit but overall great breakfast.

Really nice breakfast/brunch place. Affordable, tasty and fresh. The only downfall was that we had to wait for a table a bit but it was well handled by the waiters. We got mascarpone and avocado toast, which were exceptional, along with two American sandwiches (burgers). Special thanks to the waiter that had his first working day - you did more than well managing our inquiries ;). I recommend!
Carmela Ver★★★★★
Cute cafe where you can have an early breakfast. We enjoyed the avocado toast and sweet potato fries. The coffee is also delicious here. The inside is a little small so it may be difficult for parties larger than 4 to get a table
Marinette Leclerc★★★☆☆
I’ve been here multiple times and genuinely love the coffee, which is why I was excited to finally try the brunch with a friend. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. The pancakes were honestly inedible, you have to pay extra for every topping (which is fine), but even with fruit and syrup they were incredibly bitter, almost spicy in a wasabi-like way that scratched the throat. I managed to force down one thanks to the fruits and left the other. I’m surprised given how good the coffee is, I think there’s definitely room for improvement, especially considering you can find better brunch options at a lower price point nearby.
Brigita Grine★★★★★
I stopped by for a lunch and I enjoyed my meal a lot. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic after a half-marathon, but I appreciated that staff tried to accommodate everyone as best as they could and did it with a smile. One staff member spoke English which was very helpful. The place seems popular among tourists and expats. My sandwich was exceptional and served quickly. I wouldn’t recommend GF cookies - flavour was nice, but it fell apart as soon as you bite into it. Overall, I pretty good option for a GF meal.
A. Alhussami★★★★☆
Hidden on a narrow street, this modern coffee shop is easy to miss but usually packed. We waited about 15 minutes and got seats at the counter. The croissant was fluffy and crunchy, and both the matcha and flat white were spot-on. Great vibe and quality coffee, really worth a stop!

Essential Tips for Enjoying Cafes Near Real Jardín Botánico

To make the most of your coffee excursion in this bustling cultural district, it helps to understand a few local customs and practical considerations. The area around the Prado and the botanical garden is one of the most touristed in Madrid, but it is also a working neighborhood. Here is how to navigate it like a local rather than a visitor.

1. Order like a local to get the right strength.
Spanish coffee terminology can be confusing. A "café solo" is a small, strong espresso. A "cortado" is an espresso cut with a splash of milk, which is the standard mid-morning order. If you want something closer to a latte, ask for a "café con leche," which is usually served with equal parts coffee and hot milk.

2. Check the opening hours for specialty shops.
While traditional cafes open as early as 7:00 AM, many modern specialty coffee shops in Madrid do not open until 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM. If you are an early riser looking to grab a coffee before the garden opens, stick to the classic cafeterías listed in this guide rather than the third-wave roasters.

3. Look for the "tostado natural" label.
If you prefer a lighter, fruitier flavor profile that is common in Australian or Scandinavian coffee scenes, ask for "tueste natural" or "especialidad." Many shops now offer two bean options: a traditional darker roast for locals and a lighter roast for specialty enthusiasts. Do not be afraid to ask the barista which one suits your taste.

4. Terrace seating often costs more.
In Madrid, it is common for cafes to charge a small supplement for table service on a terrace compared to standing at the bar. If you are on a budget or just want a quick shot, drink your coffee at the bar like a true Madrileño. It is cheaper, faster, and often more social.

5. Pair your coffee with a seasonal pastry.
The cafes near the botanical garden often source pastries from high-quality local bakeries. Look for "palmeras" (heart-shaped puff pastry), "torrijas" during Easter season, or a simple "tostada con tomate" (toast with crushed tomato and olive oil) for a savory start to the day.

6. Consider a to-go cup for the park.
While many traditional cafes prefer you to sit and enjoy your drink, most specialty shops offer to-go cups. If the weather is nice, grab your coffee and walk five minutes to the nearby Retiro Park. Note that drinking alcohol is prohibited in some public areas, but coffee is perfectly fine.

The area surrounding the Real Jardín Botánico is a nexus of art, nature, and gastronomy. Taking the time to sit down for a quality coffee allows you to absorb the atmosphere of the Barrio de las Letras, where Cervantes and Lope de Vega once walked. It is a chance to rest your feet before tackling the vast halls of the Prado or the Reina Sofía.

Whether you choose a historic literary cafe with velvet chairs or a minimalist space with exposed concrete and pour-over bars, you are participating in a vital part of Madrid’s daily rhythm. The perfect cup is waiting just around the corner from the garden gates.
