Finding a memorable meal in Madrid often means wandering through its historic streets, where the scent of olive oil and garlic drifts from unassuming doorways. If you are planning a visit to the iconic Real Jardín Botánico, you are situated in a prime culinary location.
The area surrounding the Paseo del Prado and the Retiro district is not just a haven for art and nature lovers; it is also a treasure trove for food enthusiasts. Here, the traditional Spanish tavern has evolved into a sophisticated yet relaxed dining experience.
Whether you are looking to rest your legs after a long walk through the botanical gardens or seeking a pre-dinner aperitif before visiting the Prado Museum, the local tapas scene offers something for every palate. From crispy croquetas to succulent jamón ibérico, the options are endless.
The challenge, however, is separating the authentic local haunts from the generic tourist traps. You want a place where the ingredients are fresh, the atmosphere is vibrant, and the service is welcoming to both locals and travelers.
This guide focuses on the establishments that prioritize quality and atmosphere. We have scoured the neighborhood to bring you venues that deliver a genuine taste of Madrid’s social dining culture.
Below, you will find a curated selection of the best spots to enjoy a vermouth, a cold beer, or a glass of regional wine alongside small plates that pack a punch of flavor.

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign.
We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!

This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

A small restauran with relaxed vibe compared to the noise and hustle of the nearby streets. Food was presented lovely, we tried salmorejo soup, manchego cheese platter, tomato toasts and Mediterranean salad. Everything was fresh and delicious. Their prices are not low but more or less reasonable having in mind the touristy area around.
Lana Ghvinjilia★★★★★
Absolutely stunning Pulpa (octopus) and olives. Never tried anything like this. I travelled a lot, especially around Mediterranean, but their octopus was exceptional. Very acceptable prices and fast service.
Natalie★★★★☆
Each dish was fantastic! Tapas were a bit on the expensive side but otherwise, they were really tasty.
Freddy Villalona★★★★★
Great authentic Spanish food. Everything is made in house and every dish is made fresh. They also have a large selection of wines and drinks as well as a great atmosphere. The staff is friendly and very attentive. I highly recommend this spot wether you are a local or visiting Madrid.

This family run place was amazing! The grandma, mom, son and daughter were all helping out at the restaurant.
We stumbled on it on our first day in Madrid. Really cosy and the team is extremely friendly.
Food is delicious and well priced. Highly recommend

I visited many tapas bars during my few days in Madrid, and this one left the strongest impression on me.
It was small, loud, and crowded like most places in the area during the evening. We had to wait for a table, and the one we got was in a less-than-pleasant corner of the basement. But… the food and the homemade vermouth were the best I’ve ever tried. Excellent taste and presentation. The waiter was very professional, which made the experience even better.
I would definitely recommend visiting!
Jordan★★★☆☆
Unfortunately the food didn’t match the fantastic service. We shared various plates such as the anchovies with tomato and bread ,the anchovies with blue cheese , cured ham which in fairness was very nice and smoky. The black pudding and also pork cheeks were very disappointing, dry and lacklustre.
The vermouth was exceptional as was the waiters service.
I feel sad the food wasn’t the same.
Columbus OH★★★★☆
We were seated downstairs, which was noticeably less appealing than the upstairs area. Our table was wobbly, and switching tables didn’t help. The bathroom door looked dirty, and the downstairs space overall felt unkempt. Service was very slow; the waiter was clearly working hard, running up and down the stairs, but simply couldn’t keep up.
That said, the food was tasty, especially the fish balls. We ended up ordering two. Main dish portions were on the small side though. If we had been seated upstairs, the experience might have been much better.

We arrived hungry at 4 pm on Friday after a long day of traveling. Got ourselves 2 stools and a table. Our waiter took care of the customers in the order they came in. We ordered what he recommended #1, 5, 9 and 2 glasses of house white. He gave us a some anchovies and chips while we waited.
All I can say is.. It was so delicious!
The tapas came in this order and one was better than before.
9. Smoked sardines on (freshly mashed tomatoes) toast.
5. Smoked salmon with tzatziki sauce (lovely black caviar) on toast.
1. Prawn with mayonnaise and spring onion spread on toast. It came out hot and the shrimp was fresh and cooked perfectly.
We ordered a third glass to share because the wine paired so well with the prawn toast.
We got full, happy, and satisfied.
We really enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend Taberna La Concha.
Barbara Bačurin★★★★★
NOT a tourist trap!
Get the prawn on toast as well as the pork in 3 cheese sauce on toast along with the vermouth cocktail. You will love it! From the service (Kristian was an amazing host!), the food, the atmosphere - its everything you want from a tapas bar on THE tapas street in Madrid. Genuinely sad we went there on our last night bacause we would definitely have come back multiple times during our stay.

Soooo good. If you are looking for solid tapas and paella come here! Prices are reasonable and service was friendly and quick. Would definitely come back if in Madrid! We got the Madrid stew croquettes, seafood paella, and patatas bravas. The croquettes in particular were unreal and so delicious.

Andalusian restaurant. It is typical tapas bar and you receive tapas with drink. You can choose from menu which one.
The restaurant is small and simple but we really enjoyed it. Good food, good drinks, nice service.

Incredible location, food, value and service. We arrived around 1:20 and it isn't too busy. Very friendly bartender who speaks many languages. Everything we tried is a knockout!! No AC but not too hot (even in 30+). Try the croquettes!

This is a real gem, it’s rustic, clean and so welcoming. The food is so much like the Tapas we had in the Cordoba region, great value for money, very tasty, fresh and superb value for money. Please try, we were so pleased.

Sorry about the partial eaten photo, we found this place on a side street and loved it. Manager was great, the food was really good. I had the calamari sandwich and she had a chicken sandwich. All of it was really good and all of the work staff was great.

Fresh, various and delicious tapas on Mercado San Anton! Located on 2nd floor, full of interesting and classic dishes 🫶🏻 be aware — portions are HUGE (we ordered 1/2, you can see it below…)

Very nice estanco in the mall. The owner Richard is very kind - he gave me a bonus dish and he even speaks portuguese!

Decent tapas and the chips they give you with them are surprisingly good too. But at €6.50 per pop, it seems a little pricey, and no prices are explicitly listed; which makes you wonder if there’s some price discrimination going on

Had tapas of various varieties, and the ham croquettes, all excellent. Ask for Richard, friendly, professional and a genuinely friendly host.

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!
Tom Klopack★★★★★
A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.

★★★★★
Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours.
I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person.
The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time.
My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome!
What to got:
- ham croquettes
- shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness)
- crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

This place is a delight and was one of our favorite dining experiences throughout our two week trip to Spain! The food, service and ambiance were all wonderful with the owner and server even stopping to teach us a little bit of Spanish along the way. We are so happy to have stopped into Tasca Barea and will think of it often! ✨
dan★★★★★
We walked past Tasca Barea a few days ago and it had people spilling onto the footpath, glasses raised, elbows out, the sort of crowd that makes you file a place away for later.
Tonight we turn up ten minutes after they unlock the door for dinner at 7pm, which in Spain counts as recklessly early. There is a small table inside that looks like it has been waiting for us specifically.
I am aware I have said this before on this trip, often and with feeling, but these are the best olives I have ever had. Fleshy and properly seasoned, floating around with some garlic. The kind you keep reaching for even when you know you've had enough olives now and should probably stop.
Wine. Then more wine. Then another bowl of olives. Four glasses of wine and two bowls of olives comes to ten euros.
It feels like someone briefly slipped and priced the night as if it were still the 90s and nobody corrected them. We sit there, happily complicit, chewing olives and watching the room fill, wondering how long beautiful places like this are allowed to exist before someone notices.
Ashley L★★★★★
Absolutely charming and very lively vermouth and tapas bar, highly recommended getting in early if you want a seat, otherwise it's be butts to nuts. Every visitor to Madrid who I've brought here has loved it.
Anna★★★★★
It is a little gem of a bar. It's tiny but full of joy shared by all. There are no strangers here, just friends that you haven't met yet. If you are looking for a place with a soul, that's it! Tapas is amazing because owners care about the origin and quality of the food that they serve. And vermú.. well.. where will I start?! It's home made, delicious and served with a piece of orange and an olive so it not only tastes amazing but it also looks cute!
Joseph C★★★★★
Lured by the high rating and reviews, we made a short trek out of the touristy area and glad we did.
Welcomed by one of the owners, he was very patient with us while we nervously try to look up what to get here and helpful recommended to start with their very popular vermut on tap. Glad we did. It was our first time having vermut and we now prefer it over sangria.
Also ordered their tortilla de patatas, marinera and maritrini (first time having these and now I'm obsessed) and barea peppers (funnily, meant to order the fried green peppers but we actually fell in love with this one).
You can taste the care in the food (you can Google for their backstory) and atmosphere was friendly and laid back. Even a regular was helping us pick up the food while we soak in the great vibes at a beautiful, sunny spot by the large open window.
This place is clearly a local favorite and probably a best kept secret in Madrid.
We will definitely return again.

We were looking to have a quick bite before we go to our next destination around 7:30 pm on Saturday and we search a tapas restaurant close to us and we came across this restaurant. We wanted to seat outdoor and they have a big area for the outdoor dining which was amazing. The menu was simple with photos so no language barrier issues. Alvaro was our waiter and he was amazing. He was tentative and spoke English well so it made our order even easier. The staff were very friendly and we loved our experience. We wanted to stay for a drink for few minutes but we stayed for food and almost an hour. Definitely if you are thinking to relax, have great food and amazing service this is your place

Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard. Tapa Tapa is exactly that. A relaxed spot for sharing a few tapas, having a cold beer, and taking a break from exploring Madrid.
The tortilla was freshly made, the Iberian ham was exactly what you’d expect in Spain, and the croquetas disappeared much faster than planned. Nothing overcomplicated—just good ingredients done well.
If you’re looking for an authentic local tavern, this isn’t it. But if you want a lively atmosphere, reliable tapas, and a place where it’s easy to sit longer than you intended, Tapa Tapa is a solid choice.

This place is just PERFECT. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, and super friendly staff!! 10/10 recommend!
The seafood here is absolutely amazing, and I REALLY RECOMMEND the Black Rice - honestly a 15/10 dish, incredibly rich and divine. If you like seafood, you will NOT go wrong. The prawns and baby squid were also REALLY GOOD!
Huge thanks to the Rouss for being so accommodating and helpful, and to Isabel and Agustin for being such wonderful, attentive servers. You guys made our night even better.
The restaurant is very clean and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was truly a great dining experience - I’ll definitely be back!

How to Choose the Right Tapas Bar for You
With so many excellent options near the botanical gardens, choosing can be overwhelming. The key is to match your dining style with the right venue, as some are standing-room-only while others offer relaxed terraces. Understanding a few local customs will also help you navigate the scene like a seasoned Madrileño.
Match the time to the venue. Lunch typically starts late in Spain, usually around 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, while dinner rarely begins before 8:30 PM. If you are hungry earlier, look for bars that serve "raciones" all day or focus on cured meats and cheeses that are always ready.
Look for the chalkboard. The most authentic spots often feature a chalkboard or printed daily menu with "especialidades del día." This is a sign that the kitchen is using seasonal ingredients rather than relying solely on a static, tourist-focused menu.
Don’t be afraid to stand. Some of the best flavors are found in crowded, standing-room-only bars. If you see a crowd spilling out onto the sidewalk with glasses of vermouth, that is a signal of quality. Push in politely, order at the bar, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Check the olive pit rule. A quick way to gauge a bar’s quality is to look at the floor. In a traditional, high-turnover tapas bar, locals often discard olive pits and napkins on the floor. While it might look messy to outsiders, it is historically a sign of a busy, beloved establishment where the focus is on the food, not the pretense.
Ask for the "caña" or "doble." Instead of ordering a large beer, opt for a "caña" (a small draft beer) which stays cold and fresh. This allows you to pair different drinks with different tapas without filling up too quickly.
Don’t fill up on bread. While the bread served with your tapas is great for soaking up sauces, don’t make it the main event. Save room for the signature dishes, as portions of authentic Spanish omelet or grilled seafood are often generous.
As you wind down your exploration of the Paseo del Prado, remember that eating tapas is as much about the journey as the destination. It is about moving from one bar to the next, comparing the crispness of the croquetas or the sharpness of the garlic aioli.
Whether you choose a historic tavern with wooden barrels or a modern bistro with a creative twist, the area around the Real Jardín Botánico offers a perfect snapshot of Madrid’s culinary soul. Take your time, savor the atmosphere, and enjoy the ritual of sharing good food in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.
