Sitting on a shaded bench in the Jardin du Luxembourg with a buttery croissant or a delicate fruit tart is one of the quintessential Parisian experiences. The area surrounding these iconic gardens is not just a haven for students and politicians; it is also a fiercely competitive battleground for some of the best bakers in the capital. From historic institutions that have perfected the art of sourdough over centuries to modern boutiques redefining the classic éclair, the neighborhood is a treasure trove for anyone who takes their carbohydrates seriously.
Navigating the narrow streets of the 5th and 6th arrondissements, you will find yourself spoiled for choice. The scent of caramelizing butter and roasted coffee spills out onto the cobblestones, luring you into storefronts glowing with golden baguettes and jewel-toned macarons. Whether you are looking for a quick snack to enjoy on a park chair or a show-stopping cake to take to a dinner party, this quartier delivers on every level.
However, not all pastries are created equal, and in a city so dense with boulangeries, it is easy to stumble into a tourist trap. To truly eat like a local, you need to know which lines are worth waiting in and which ovens are firing on all cylinders. This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the definitive list of the best bakeries and pastry shops within walking distance of the Luxembourg Gardens.
We have focused on craftsmanship, ingredient quality, and consistency. These are the places where the dough is fermented for hours, where butter comes from specific regions like Charentes-Poitou, and where pastry chefs treat sugar work as an art form. Each entry offers something unique, whether it is a signature loaf, an award-winning flan, or a cozy spot to sip a café crème.
You will find a mix of traditional French institutions and innovative newcomers. Some are perfect for grabbing a baguette to go, while others offer a seated salon de thé experience. The common thread is a dedication to the French baking tradition, ensuring that every bite is a memory in the making.
Because the area is frequented by locals who have high standards, the survival of these shops depends on their ability to perform daily. We have curated this list to ensure you spend less time wandering and more time enjoying the fruits of their labor. Prepare your palate for a journey through flaky layers, rich creams, and perfectly caramelized crusts.
Below, you will find the essential spots to visit, complete with what to order and why they stand out in a crowded field of flour and sugar.

Everything here is amazing hard to chose
Locate close to Luxembourg garden is a must stop for a quick bite or take something with you...impossible to resist.
Staff very professional and pleasant
Is a 5 star service from the presentation to the taste...

😉Great place for a quick bite or takeaway for a picnic at the Luxembourg gardens
🫶Fast and friendly service
✅Prices are ok
😋Savory and sweet options for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
🫤Not a place to stay. There are no tables or chairs, just a small counter.
♿️Quite small for people with restricted mobility

Lovely pastries, croissant is everything you’d want from a croissant: flakey, buttery. The pepito was nice as well but I wish it was more crispy but nonetheless still enjoyable, would recommend if you like chocolate. Croissant + pepito = €3.80 - a steal! Would recommend coming in the morning and sitting in the Jardins du Luxembourg to people watch

You have to visit La Parisienne. Enough said. 🙄
It’s an excellent boulangerie with really good sandwiches and pastries. I definitely recommend the salmon baguette. The bread is high quality, full of fiber, and crispy. The prices are great, the quality is top-tier, and the staff is nice. For pastries, the chausson aux pommes, croissants, and pain au chocolats are all superb!!
⚠️ Just a heads up that the shop is right next to the road so there’s nowhere to sit. If you go to this location, just take your food and walk over to Jardin du Luxembourg to eat instead.

I found this gem while walking around the neighbourhood where I'm staying in the 6th Arrondissement near Jardin de Luxembourg. There's ALWAYS a line of people, but the wait is never too long. Staff are very friendly even when it's always busy, food SO delicious, price very reasonable for the quality! I will miss this place so much when I leave Paris. Merci beaucoup. Je reviendrai!

I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical walking into a bakery with an English name in Paris, but Smith completely won me over. The croissants were incredibly fresh and flaky, the coffee was excellent, and even the juice stood out as truly exquisite. A pleasant surprise all around, and proof that great quality speaks for itself regardless of the name. I’d happily come back again.

Friendly service when we stopped for a cup of tea and a cake on a cold afternoon in January. A good selection of fresh sandwiches and quiches. A range of cakes, cookies, cheesecake, even scones were available. We chose Paris Brest ( as suggested by the server) and a tart tatin. Both were good. On a warm day tables are available outside on the pavement. We were happy we’d crossed the road from the salon de the’ opposite.
Jette Wittenberg★★★★☆
This bakery is nestled on a charming Parisian street full of lively cafés and restaurants. They offer a great selection of both sweet and savory pastries. I had the salmon, avocado, and cream cheese bagel - it was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of saltiness and creaminess. A great spot for a midday snack or light lunch. Highly recommend!
Moon Rabbit★★★★☆
A local bakery tucked inside the Rue de Buci pedestrian area, offering both savory items and desserts that look absolutely tempting and at reasonable prices too.
We picked up a lemon tart, a strawberry tart, and éclairs. The classic lemon tart stood out in particular: the crust was crisp, the lemon filling smooth and layered with flavor, delicious. The éclairs, filled with either chocolate or caramel cream, were also excellent, the shell was crisp, and the rich filling packed the entire éclair.
Hareesh Gottipati★★★★★
We stopped by Smiths Bakery in the Latin Quarter and really enjoyed it. The lemon cheesecake was as good as people said, and the chai latte? Easily one of the best we've had—and we've tried quite a few in our travels!
Just a quick note: like many places around tourist areas, they do charge a bit more if you sit inside. But sitting outside and watching the world go by makes it a nice experience overall. The only thing that could be improved is the service—it could definitely be a bit friendlier.

Very busy but the queues were moving quickly. There is no place to sit so its all take away. Delicious pastries with a lot of variety. We had a pistachio éclairs & a plain butter croissant for only 4.5£! Eclair was full of fresh, mildly sweet cream that tasted indulgent & pistachio-y. & the croissant was so light and flaky. Absolute bangers!
Kristy★★★★★
Wow. This place is still drawing a queue for the croissant award it won back in 2018... eight years ago! Is it still worth the hype? My answer is a definite yes.
Keeping both the quality and the volume this consistent for so many years is no small feat. People simply wouldn't still be lining up if the croissants weren't exceptional. And let's be honest, there have been eight other winners since then, so it's not as if there aren't alternatives.
I was there at about 9.00 am. There was a short queue and it moved surprisingly quickly. They've had years to perfect the system, and it shows. Don't let the line put you off. You won't be waiting long.
I don't really understand the complaints about the lack of seating or atmosphere. It's next to a metro entrance and a market. It's a working bakery, people!
Do what the French do. Grab your croissant, pick up a coffee nearby, then wander to the nearest park or along the river and mindfully enjoy one of the best croissants you'll ever eat. Bonus points for doing it without an influencer photo shoot in sight (looking at you, La Carette!).
The croissants are handmade and baked throughout the day, so there's a good chance yours has come straight from the oven. Eat it immediately. Don't save it for later. This is one of those moments that's worth enjoying exactly as intended -- straight black and white paper bag.
And at just €1.20? That's Parisian public service if you ask me.
I'd happily line up again.
TIP: Find 'Square Danielle Mitterrand' a tiny gated public-garden where you can eat your croissant in. Less than a 10min walk away. Do some google research on this wife of former French President François Mitterrand. She was a liaison officer in the French Resistance.

Went here due to tons of reviews saying this is the best place to grab a Croissant and it did a good job 🤓. The Croissant and Pain au Chocolate is crispy, freshly baked and buttery. It doesn't sugary like the one i had in Germany and that shocked me. The "real" Croissant is what my French friend told me about this place and the prices are very reasonable. 🥖
There was a staff also helping people getting the cake first when there is a long line. Perfect help👍🏻
However the baguette was a bit cold when i bought it, i couldn't feel the taste that i was hoping for and really hard to eat 🥲
But overall it still worth it.
Mohammed Alasad★★★★★
We tried the croissant, and it was absolutely delicious. It had a perfectly crispy exterior with a soft, airy interior and a rich, buttery flavor. It was served slightly cold, but it was still clear that it was made to a very high standard. I highly recommend trying it.
Princess Zabala★★★★★
Croissant tasted really good! Fresh & tasty! I would recommend it but make sure to pair it with something warm! Hot chocolate or coffee would be great!
Line was not that Long since it was raining staffs were fast! But I would say not that friendly expect the one in the cashier! Maybe they were tired already but still! Got confused who was really serving but in the end it’s the Food that matters 😅

Best pain suisse in the world. I usually do not even like or choose pain suisse because often it is too sweet, cream is bad, lamination is not great, but THIS ONE IS THE BEST and i could not imagine how it could ever get better than this. It is cooked to perfection i do not know how they achieved such perfection. The top is not only crispy and the light wash of sugar on top makes it crack almost like creme brulee. The lamination and pastry dough is delicious. The chocolate is the perfect balance, not too sweet not too bitter not too rich but not flat. The bottom layer is crunchy, you have all these elements coming together is perfect harmony to create a flavourful and texturally mind blowing experience.

Love this place so much. All are yummy. The best Mille Feuille aux fruits for me, fullfilled my trip. Croissant 🥐 is truly lovely. Kouign-amann is not that sweet but crispy. Eclair also 👍🏻. Price is very reasonable! Want to stay there for having them everyday. 😘🥰

This is another award winning boulangerie for their croissant. The croissant was great quality as well and I enjoyed giving it a try. The croissant was a bit smaller than others, but it was still delicious.
If you're in the area looking for pastries, they would definitely satisfy the cravings, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit.

A renowned pâtisserie, especially after being featured in Emily in Paris, so of course I had to stop by and try it for myself.
I ordered a pain au chocolat, and it definitely did not disappoint. Perfectly flaky, buttery, and fresh, exactly what you hope for when grabbing a pastry in Paris. The chocolate was rich without being overwhelming, and the balance between crisp layers and soft interior was just right.
Sometimes the famous spots live up to the hype, and this was one of them.

Really good croissant and coffee. All the sweet and savory bakery look exquisite! Customer service was fast and employees nice. Definitively I will come back.

No signage on the croissants so I ordered what looked like a pain au raisin, rather than being corrected on what it was I was sold it anyway. It was soft and flavorless, very disappointing. Almond croissant was mediocre - weak flavored filling that was almost a gelatin slab.

While walking around Saint Germain looking for a breakfast stop, I was mainly interested in something to takeaway. I stopped into Maison Mulot after a recommendation I received.
The display case is full of beautiful breakfast items, including various brioche, croissants, and small tarts, all of which looked very tempting.
I ended up ordering an almond croissant, a cheese brioche and a coffee to go. Service was good and fast.
The almond croissant filling was very tasty and moist. Unfortunately, the outside was a little overdone and instead of flaky, it became slightly hard. Nevertheless a decent breakfast item overall.
The brioche was very soft with melted cheese on top. Nothing special but definitely a nice savory option for the morning.
Coffee was just okay, not something particularly memorable.
Overall, still a decent place to stop in Saint Germain for a quick breakfast snack to go.

My friend and I have been here twice on our trip to Paris. We stumbled up on it and decided to have lunch there. We both got the parisian sandwitch and it was delicious! The bread was crispy outside and soft on the inside and the ingredients in the sandwitch were fresh. We came back the day after for lunch as well and got the same sandwitches. There was only one chair available but the staff brought my friend a chair to sit on. Sending love from Finland❤️

The food was excellent! We especially loved the Croque-Monsieur Parisien, the croissant, and the éclair, everything was fresh and delicious. The total came to €29 for two people, which we found to be very fair for the quality. Definitely worth it!

The absolute perfect pain au chocolat to inaugurate our croissant experience in Paris!
What set this apart was the chocolate filling…it was amazingly soft and smooth, reminiscent of a rich, firm ganache. It avoids the common issue in the States, where bakeries simply place two hard, clunky bars of chocolate inside. Combined with the golden, flaky, beautifully laminated pastry from Boulangerie Michalak (topped with subtle chocolate nibs), this set the gold standard for every pastry that followed on our trip. 5/5 stars!

The citrus sugar-frosted madeleine tastes buttery. It's the best match for coffee. The shop appears clean and well-kept. I enjoyed it so much that I went 2 days in a row.

Pastries are small for the price but absolutely delicious. Would not come back though, can find great pastries for cheaper

The pretzel croissant is delicious but the chocolate croissant is overly sweet and not crunchy on the outside. We will come back and try other things and see if we like it better.

our first bite in paris was of course treats from pierre hermé. tried all their croissant flavors, the ispahan in particular was amazing. service is friendly and helpful, with a large selection of macaron flavors, chocolates and other pastries. note that this location is a smaller boutique with no seating options, just grab and go.

These were the best macarons we had in Paris. They offer many flavors not just the basic ones and they have very interesting combinations of them. My favorite ones were the passion fruit and pistachio & strawberry.

Excellent macarons and service! Paris-Brest and Ispahan cakes were also delicious. Btw, they serve macaron, not macaroons, like many of the reviews mistook the name. Macaroons are completely different and not like the delicate macaron. It’s shocking to me how often people mistook the two very different things and think they are the same.

During one of my early morning walks throughout the St. Germain neighborhood, Poilane bakery was on my list of places to try, as I had heard it is a bit of an institution, mostly for breads, but they also offer oldschool style croissants.
It is a smaller bakery, but very warm and inviting. Service was good. They have a lot of breads and a variety of different rolls, baguettes, whole grains, and other traditional bakery items.
Their case does have several pastries, but it is not what you would expect if you are looking for a large sweets display. This is definitely more of a bread institution.
The chocolate croissant was flaky, tasteful, and made with very good quality butter. I really enjoyed it.
Worth stopping in here for a traditional style croissant.

Spectacular!
Their brioche with fruits and nuts is unbelievable! One of the best breads you will ever try. Anywhere. Period.
Plus, the ladies who work here are super nice and offer great recommendations. I did some wide sampling and the brioche and apple pastry were the stars (though everything was excellent!)
Highly recommended place for some of the best baked goods in Paris.

Comfy, warm and fresh. Eventhough it can get a little crowded in the small bakery, the ambiance is super warm and friendly and the service is very helpful and caring. The food is hearty and comforting and subtle, but overall delicious.
I only wish that they also had coffee and you have to be aware that they sell out quickly and don’t always have everything.

Definitely recommend a visit to this well known famous Parisienne bakery. Such history and an amazing story behind it. Great products with their main loaf have the signature ‘P’ logo cut into it. Also know for their shortbread cookies that have 5-6 varieties made from different flours. Good coffee in the eatery area to the left of the shop and had a pastry with it.

Loved this little place that was a 3 minute walk from our apartment. The woman who helped has was AMAZINGLY friendly and helpful. I knew a little French, she knew a little English. The waitress was incredibly rude!
We wanted to try 1 flan (this was the dessert after dinner) she demanded we order more and did not let sit us down only for take away regardless of the place being almost empty.
There is no sign whatsoever that there is a minimum consumption per person.
Flan was OK but nothing special.
Honestly, the pastry does not worth it to deal with the rudeness.

Below average and overpriced. A classic tourist trap.
We stopped in for coffee, croissants, and sandwiches, and unfortunately none of it lived up to the hype. The coffee was mediocre, the croissants were forgettable, and the sandwiches lacked freshness and flavor. Everything felt mass-produced rather than crafted by a quality Parisian bakery.
Given the prices, I expected much better. Paris is full of exceptional neighborhood boulangeries where you’ll get fresher pastries, better coffee, and far better value.
Save your money and go to a real local bakery instead.

The croque monsieur was very good. The bread was nicely toasted, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the ham was flavorful.
Though it could have used a bit more ham or a slightly crispier finish. The chocolate éclair was fresh and rich

This small bakery one street back from the Seine make the best pastries I've ever eaten in my life.

I was very nervous shopping in Paris because I've been told that Parisians are very rude to English speaking foreigners, but the staff at Paris baguette have been very patient, polite and friendly.(Even with my bad french and thick Australian accent.
Thankyou.
Tips for Enjoying Bakeries Near Jardin du Luxembourg
To make the most of your culinary tour, it helps to understand a few local customs and logistical details. A little planning can mean the difference between a warm, fresh pastry and a disappointing, cold one. Here is how to navigate the scene like a seasoned Parisian rather than a lost tourist.
1. Time your visit for peak freshness.
The French baking schedule is precise. Baguettes and viennoiseries (croissants, pain au chocolat) are typically baked early in the morning and again in the mid-afternoon. If you want something warm from the oven, aim for opening time or around 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM when the after-school rush begins.
2. Learn the difference between a Boulangerie and a Pâtisserie.
A true boulangerie focuses on bread and must bake on-site to legally use the name. A pâtisserie specializes in sweet pastries and cakes. Many shops are both, but if you are looking for a great sourdough loaf, prioritize a shop known for its boulangerie credentials rather than just its window display.
3. Bring cash or a contactless card.
While most modern shops near the Jardin du Luxembourg accept credit cards, many have a minimum spend (often around 10 euros) for card transactions. If you are just grabbing a single croissant or a baguette, having a few coins or a small bill will speed up the line and keep the locals happy.
4. Ask for a "Tradition" over a standard baguette.
When buying bread, look for a "baguette tradition." This is a legally protected term that guarantees the bread contains only flour, water, salt, and yeast—no additives or frozen dough. It is usually only slightly more expensive but infinitely better in texture and flavor.
5. Be prepared to carry your own bag.
France has largely phased out single-use plastic bags. While bakeries will offer paper bags, these can tear easily if you are walking around the park all day. Bring a small reusable tote bag to safely carry your bread, pastries, and any jars of jam or honey you might pick up along the way.
6. Embrace the "Goûter" hour.
The French typically do not snack all day, but the goûter (the after-school snack around 4:00 PM) is a sacred time for children and adults alike. This is the perfect moment to buy a pain au chocolat or a chausson aux pommes. You will find the shops bustling and the pastries at their freshest for the afternoon rush.
The area around the Jardin du Luxembourg is a living museum of French gastronomy, and these bakeries are its beating heart. Taking the time to visit a few of these addresses will not just satisfy your hunger; it will give you a deeper appreciation for the rhythm of Parisian daily life. Whether you are tearing into a crusty loaf or savoring a layered mille-feuille, you are participating in a tradition that has defined this neighborhood for centuries.
As you wander from one shop to the next, pay attention to the details—the crackle of the crust, the sheen of the glaze, and the balance of flavors. These artisans pour their hearts into their work, and the result is a standard of excellence that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. Bon appétit.
