Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, is a city that takes its gastronomy seriously. Nestled between the Cantabrian mountains and the rugged northern coast, this elegant city serves as a culinary crossroads where the best of the land and sea meet on a single plate. For locals, dining out is not just a necessity; it is a ritual of social connection, often stretching for hours over shared bottles of cider and animated conversation.
Asturian cuisine is defined by its unpretentious, hearty character, relying on exceptional raw materials rather than elaborate techniques. The regionβs lush pastures produce some of Spainβs finest dairy, which manifests in a dizzying array of artisanal cheeses, particularly the pungent Cabrales. Meanwhile, the nearby Bay of Biscay supplies the kitchens of Oviedo with pristine seafood, from spider crab to hake, ensuring a freshness that is hard to replicate elsewhere.
No discussion of dining in Oviedo is complete without mentioning fabada asturiana, the regionβs iconic bean stew. This slow-cooked dish, featuring creamy fabes beans, chorizo, morcilla, and pork shoulder, is a testament to the Asturian philosophy of patience and simplicity. It is the type of dish that warms the soul during the cool, rainy days that frequently sweep through the region.
Equally important is the culture of natural cider, or sidra natural. This tart, still beverage is poured from high above the head to aerate the liquid, a theatrical ritual known as escanciar. A visit to an Asturian restaurant is incomplete without experiencing this tradition, which pairs perfectly with salty cheeses, grilled meats, and the convivial atmosphere of a bustling sidrerΓa.
Navigating the restaurant scene in Oviedo can be overwhelming, as the city boasts a dense concentration of quality eateries, from historic sidrerΓas to modern gastrobars. The distinction between a good meal and a transcendent one often lies in the details: the sourcing of the beans, the sharpness of the cider, or the crust on a homemade bread. It requires local knowledge to separate the tourist traps from the authentic institutions.
To help you experience the true essence of Asturian hospitality, we have curated a guide to the most exceptional dining establishments in the capital. Whether you are seeking a rustic, wood-beamed tavern or a refined interpretation of regional classics, this list offers a comprehensive roadmap to the cityβs best tables.
Below is our selection of the best Asturian restaurants in Oviedo, chosen for their commitment to tradition, quality of ingredients, and the unique atmosphere they bring to the local dining scene.

Very nice restaurant near the cathedral with a large menu and fresh whole fish specials. Calamari to start was a bit rubbery but the whole fish specials were lovely. Desserts were delicious and large. Wine was reasonably priced. Service was fast and efficient.

Best restaurant I've been in at AstΓΊrias by a mile. Visited Llanes Ribadesella Oviedo AvilΓ©s and Cangas de OnΓs and ate at 5 restaurants. Very good scrambled eggs with mushrooms. Very good crunchy croquetas. The ternera in the Cachopo was tender and juicy, very good. Could have more cheese tho. The cachopo was fried lightly too, not greasy at all. The restaurant is beautiful inside. Good price. I'd give it a 4,5/5.

5 stars for value for money. We ate from a 3 course menΓΊ del dΓa which included bread and a drink ( a bottle of wine, cider or water) for 13 euros. The food was all very tasty, and served quickly and professionally. It would be wise to arrive early or book, as there were queues of people waiting, within half an hour if it opening. Recommended.

Gato Negro provides exceptional value in the middle of Oviedo by providing Asturian specialties and of course, cider.
While the food is rather on the rustic side, it is still very good for the price and the portions are generous. We ordered a bunch of dishes from fish to salad, deli meats and cachopo (a little dry on the cachopo, left me seeking a better one).
Of course, this is saddled with generous portions of the local cider which tends to be on the bitter side (and thatβs a positive).
Lastly, we thought the lively atmosphere inside was unbeatable, people enjoying their meals in a fun room. Service was friendly and efficient.
Highly recommended while in Oviedo.
P.S.: please leave a π if this review was useful in making your choices, thanks π

This is a truly wonderful restaurant. The cooking is first class, with interesting, adventurous flavours. The service is equally good with all the staff welcoming, friendly and helpful. I had bluefin tuna with a toffee sauce and a ball of something that included vermouth - delicious. Surpassed only by the exquisite Asturias rice pudding. Faultless.

Superb food in a lovely dining area. We had an early lunch here before flying home and were made to feel very welcome despite being nearly an hour earlier than most other lunch diners. Ordered a couple of glasses of wine which were poured by the half so that the wine could stay cold. JamΓ³n croquettes were wonderfully creamy - perhaps could have done with a fruit sauce for a bit of contrast but this is a mild criticism. Mains were superb - solomillo lovely and juicy and the suckling pig had a wonderful crunchy top.

Located near a small square in the city center, the restaurant is accessible by walk. While the terrasse is nice, the ambiance inside is very much worth it with a typical Spanish setting.
The food is tasty with very large portions. Go for the favada, you wonβt regret it.
The service is pleasant with careful people always here to help and arrange. 100% recommend.

We are a bit astonished at all the good reviews this place has. We live in Oviedo and decided to try it as it looks nice and has good reviews. The food however was extremely disappointing... The quality was of an ordinary cidreria but with pretensions of grandeur regarding the presentation and price. Sows ear at the price of a silk purse basically. For the price (we paid about β¬35 per person) I would have expected far more and have eaten far better for less in other places in Oviedo (and we eat out a lot here). The crepe with seafood was actually inedible, and the food was so stodgy that after the first plate I felt sick and full, the typical thing that happens to me in most lesser quality establishments. The vibe we got from the server too was that their clientele was mostly tourists. We will never go back.

A great place to try traditional Asturian cuisine. We ordered the famous fabada asturiana, which was rich, comforting, and full of flavor, along with the local breaded veal (cachopo), which was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and generous enough to share. The portions were large, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere felt authentic. A very good choice if you want to experience classic local food in Oviedo.

One of the worst experiences of my life and especially in all of Spain! Oviedo is a very special place for us and return often as it isnβt hectic like most other cities and has a wonderful tranquil atmosphere. This was our second time at this restaurant because our first experience was lovely but the second time was absolutely horrific due to our waiter. Incredibly unkind and downright rude and showed how intentionally he didnβt want us there. He clearly saw that we arenβt locals and sat us at the worst possible table and only spoke to us in Spanish and literally pretended not to understand a word we were saying whilst giving us an English menu. All the other tables were provided with bread with olives and olive oil whilst we were ignored. We finally decided to simply walk out as we refuse to be treated with disrespect while paying for a premium for a restaurant with white table cloths which should come with kind service not just good food. Iβm sorry to give the restaurant a 1 star rating but the restaurant needs to understand how to treat everyone with respect and kindness no matter what the circumstances as we are all there to have a pleasant time and spend our hard earned money and time. A good restaurant isnβt all about the food but about the atmosphere but most importantly how the customers are treated and feel in the space. Very disappointing as we absolutely love this city and Spanish cuisine and the people as a whole. The city is full of lovely restaurants and I encourage everyone to go elsewhere and not have to experience such unpleasant and negative energy.

We just happen to find this restaurant while walking near our hotel. Amazing food complimented by extraordinary service. The staffβs recommendations did not disappoint.
Atmosphere was quiet, being hard of hearing this is very important for me. My partner has mobility issues and we were graciously accommodated. We have dined there two nights in row - the bacalao was cooked to perfection- (not overcooked like so many restaurants tend to do). The lenguado filleted table side also spectacular.
Weβve dined there two nights in a row, planning to return again soon!

Very nice guy. Friendly and fast. He treats the restaurant like his own house and people are his guests (who pay π) but you leave the place full of happiness and satisfaction. Iβve read the negative comments on this restaurant and theyβre more of a comedy than reality. I think those people have other issues that arenβt related to the food and service of this restaurant. Very nice restaurant. They don't speak English but with their patients and google translate we did get from the menu what we want, and the very nice waiter advised us not to order too much because of the big portions they serve. We didn't made a reservation but because we where so early he could fit us in. So be advised to make a reservation first, Spanish people like to eat late so from 22:00 it will be jammed. The food was delicious. Tip: the croquetas where a specially nice.

Having read the hype and had to book two months in advance to get a table, I confess I was expecting something fairly spectacular. Sadly, I was underwhelmed. The restaurant is modern and although there has obviously been significant investment in the decoration, the place feels sterile. The staff do their job efficiently, but never smile.
To the food: we had cochinillo, very good but unremarkable and lobster, which was exceptional and more generous than expected. The clams were excellent, but the octopus was disappointing as it was tough. Note that the plates come ungarnished and there is no menu option to add side dishes.
I would note that on arrival you will find a 500 ml bottle of quality olive oil on each table. When bread is served a waiter comes, opens the bottle, and pours a 10 ml spoonful of oil into a tiny dish. So far so good but then the bottle is taken away. Don't dare, like I did, to ask for another spoonful of oil, because an irritated waiter will tell you that it costs extra. Okay, the oil is good, but it costs β¬14.95 a bottle retail, so 30 cents for a 10 ml spoonful. It's not a cheap restaurant and that's just mean. Not a good way to kick off a gourmet meal.
It's a nice restaurant, but in no way outstanding.

Potentially a very high level experience, spoiled by some (important) details. The location is very nice, central, modern, elegant and chic. We started our dinner by sharing some clams with lime sauce, it wasn't remarkable, quite a high price (26 euro) for around 12 clams, there was also one of them with a blatantly broken shell, you could feel some small pieces while chewing them. Not the end of the world, but for such a high price and small portion, one should expect very selected clams.
Also, while some clams were fresh and tasty, some of them did not taste like. At the end of the dinner and during the night, one of us has experienced some bad food poisoning, most likely due to an "unlucky" clam. Then we tried beef filet with honey sauce + 5 different potato preparations and bacalhao pil pil and black garlic sauce. The dishes were delicious. Unfortunately, we found a tiny piece of plastic in the fish, and also some fish bones. The service was attentive, they were sorry and invited us with the dish to make up for the mistake, very appreciated. The desserts were also tasty. Wine recommendation was appropriate and not too expensive. Overall we have appteciated the dinner, but we would have expected a bit more for a michelin-guide level restaurant. Despite believe that we stumbled upon a very unlucky night, we cannot give more than 1 star, taking into account the food poisoning.

The salad was huge, with very fresh lettuce, and the cachopo was big and pretty tasty as well. We ordered one salad and a small cachopo for three people and still couldnβt finish itβit was definitely more than enough food.
Service was very fast, almost too fast, which made the experience feel a bit more like a fast-food place rather than a relaxed meal. Overall, good food and generous portions, but the pace takes away a little from the experience.

Terrible service. Server uncorked a second bottle of cider before we finish the first bottle without asking us! We asked them to take it back and they still put the second bottle on the bill. We have to ask them to fix the bill. They are clearly trying to take advantage of tourists.
She was also terrible at pouring the cider, her hand and glass was dripping wet when she gave us the glass. We didn't pay to have our cider spilled into the bin. We have to wait a long time for her to come to pour our cider even though there were at least 3 other servers standing around doing nothing. We ended up pouring it ourselves.
Terrible bread, soaking it in stew didn't make it anymore edible.
The rest of the food are decent but we would never come back to this tourist trap.

Fantastic experience! Very authentic Asturian food, didn't feel touristy at all with excellent customer service and delicious food. The food portions were big, we shared a dish and the cheese platters were to die for! The waitor with the teardrop tattoo (lol) was very kind. We had to wait 40mins for a table at dinner time but they write your name down on a waiting list so it's organized, then we walked around the old town and came back.

What an experience. A must to do in Oviedo because this is a place with a name, where you go for the food as a show, not just to fill up. HUGE cachopos, typical Spanish desserts, other meat inside a very ample menu, and of course, the good old cider masterfully splashed from above. Just donβt forget to ask for take away π

What a great place to eat. The menu is extensive and food excellent. There is a good range of local ciders and wine. The service was great too. We will go back another time.
Really sorry to have to update this review but as I said above we wanted to return. Unfortunately the waiter on the door was very rude when we tried to find a table and therefore we had to go elsewhere. I have sadly
downgraded my scores
Essential Tips for Dining in Asturias
To truly enjoy the culinary culture of Oviedo, it helps to understand the local customs and rhythms. Dining in Asturias follows a different cadence than in many other parts of the world, and adapting to these habits will significantly enhance your experience. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate the cityβs food scene like a local.
1. Embrace the Late Dining Hours
Asturians eat late, particularly in the evening. Lunch is typically served from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, while dinner rarely begins before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM. If you arrive at a restaurant at 7:00 PM, you will likely find the kitchen closed or the dining room empty. Use the late afternoon to explore the old town or enjoy a vermouth and a snack to tide you over.
2. Look for the Menu del DΓa at Lunch
If you want to experience high-quality Asturian cooking without breaking the bank, seek out the "menu del dΓa" during lunchtime. This fixed-price menu usually includes a first course (often a stew or legume dish), a second course featuring meat or fish, a dessert, and a drink. It offers exceptional value and is how most locals eat a large, satisfying meal during the workday.
3. Master the Art of Escanciar
While you don’t need to pour the cider yourself, it is helpful to understand the etiquette. The cider is poured in small amounts, called "culines," which are meant to be drunk immediately in one gulp. Do not ask for a full glass of cider to sip slowly; the entire point of the ritual is to drink it quickly while the bubbles are active from the high pour. Leave a little bit in the bottom of the glass to discard the sediment.
4. Order the Cheese Board with Local Varieties
Asturias is home to over 40 varieties of cheese. When ordering a cheese board, ask for a selection that includes Cabrales (strong blue), Afuega’l Pitu (spreadable and slightly spicy), and Gamoneu (smoked). These are often served with quince paste, nuts, and sometimes a drizzle of local honey, providing a perfect contrast to the sharpness of the cider.
5. Share Plates and Go Slow
Asturian dining is a social, leisurely affair. Portions are often generous, designed for sharing among the table. Order a few plates to shareβperhaps a bean stew, a grilled fish, and a meat dishβand take your time. Waitstaff will not rush you; the table is yours for the evening. Relax, converse, and savor the slow pace that defines the region’s lifestyle.
6. Check for Seasonal Seafood
While Oviedo is inland, its proximity to the coast means seafood is a staple. Pay attention to what is fresh and in season. In the winter months, look for "pixin" (monkfish) and "oricios" (sea urchins), while summer brings excellent sardines and tuna. A good restaurant will proudly tell you what arrived from the fish market that morning.
Exploring the culinary landscape of Oviedo is a journey into the heart of Asturian identity. It is a place where recipes are guarded like family heirlooms, and the quality of a meal is measured by the warmth of the welcome as much as the flavor of the food. By venturing into the establishments listed above, you are not just eating; you are participating in a tradition that has sustained this region for centuries.
Whether you find yourself seated in a rustic cider house with sawdust on the floor or a sleek dining room with panoramic views, the soul of Asturias remains consistent. It is found in the creamy texture of the fabada, the sharp bite of a blue cheese, and the theatrical pour of a waiter raising a bottle high above his head. Take your time, order generously, and let the flavors of this green, mountainous region leave a lasting impression on your palate.
