Rouen may be famous for its medieval half-timbered houses and the towering spire of its cathedral, but the city’s culinary landscape has quietly evolved into a haven for plant-based dining. While Normandy is traditionally associated with butter, cream, and cheese, a new wave of chefs and restaurateurs is proving that vegetables can be just as indulgent. From cozy bistros tucked away on cobblestone side streets to modern cafés with sun-drenched terraces, the vegetarian scene here is vibrant and surprisingly diverse.
For locals and travelers alike, finding a meal that is both meat-free and memorable is no longer a challenge. Whether you are a strict vegan, a flexitarian, or simply someone looking to eat a little lighter while on vacation, Rouen offers a range of options that honor both global flavors and local Norman produce. The key is knowing where to look, as some of the best spots are hidden gems that don’t always advertise their vegetarian credentials loudly.
This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize flavor, atmosphere, and high-quality ingredients rather than simply offering a token salad. You will find everything from innovative fine dining experiences to casual lunch spots perfect for refueling between sightseeing. Each recommendation has been selected for its consistency, creativity, and commitment to serving satisfying vegetable-forward dishes that appeal to everyone at the table.
We understand that dietary preferences vary, and "vegetarian" can mean different things to different people. For this list, we have prioritized restaurants that are either fully vegetarian/vegan or that offer a substantial, clearly marked vegetarian menu rather than just one or two afterthoughts. This ensures you can dine with confidence and enjoy a true culinary experience rather than settling for a side dish.
As you explore the historic center, from the Gros Horloge to the Place du Vieux Marché, you will discover that eating green in Rouen is not about restriction; it is about celebration. The city’s best vegetarian kitchens are masters of texture and taste, transforming seasonal vegetables, legumes, and plant proteins into dishes that are both comforting and exciting.
Without further ado, here are the ten best vegetarian restaurants in Rouen that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

Amazing vegan restaurant using traditional çiğ köfte bulgar to create very tasty options from wraps, burgers, and even a delicious sushi dish that is wonderful. The owner is very friendly and open to accommodating different spice and heat levels based on your preferences. Service is outstanding. The place has a casual diner feel and the food is an exceptional value for flavor and creativity. What a rare blend of traditional approach and modern cuisine. Outstanding!

We stopped here on our way from Bourbourg to Mayenne. I saw vegetarian and vegan options in the reviews, but wasn't expecting everything to be vegan! It was a wonderful surprise! Being from Texas, I wanted to try the taco - but they were out of cheese. I ended up with the kofte wrap, another vegan with me had the nugget wrap, and the one non-vegan with us had the shakshuka and eggplant with rice. We all shared with each other, and I really enjoyed everything. All of us loved our meals, and I'm so glad we stopped here!

Absolutely fantastic! I wasn't sure about it from the photos on the website but it's a lovely place and the food is excellent. Best gluten free bread I've ever had. Menu is small but excellent and all gluten free.

Food was delicious! I got confused between a spritz and a seltzer and ended up with a tasty cocktail I didn’t expect. The hummus was delicious and the Thai cucumber gazpacho was refreshing. Service was good but they didn’t bring bread we asked for and didn’t come to check on us for us to remind them about the bread. Otherwise it was excellent and highly recommend it!

Extremely tasty GF meal at Hygge, extremely friendly server who welcomed us & explained everything clearly. Food was delicious and wine selection was great. Highly recommend!

Delicious food, extremely kind staff, and great value for money. We stopped here for lunch, the owner kindly got some pens and paper for my son to do some drawing. We even got free tea after the meal!

Light and tasty Mediterranean bites.
The restaurant is just about at the street end. With outdoor seating on both sides of the street it is perfect little tucked away spot for a drink and some bites
I have to say the flavors are little toned down but still tasty and yum. The Piosson de Jour is pan fried almost crispy on the outside and perfectly tender inside, lightly salted-goes perfectly with rice. The kofta is excellent, tender and beefy. Baklava is soaked rich with rose water - nice ending to a perfect meal
Happy eating

A delicious French brunch! We ordered 1 brunch for the couple (we don’t eat huge portions and it was enough for the 2 of us, with an extra coffee). We had the sweet pancakes, croissant filled with cured meat, eggs and cream cheese, and a toast like with cured meat, peach, walnuts and some green leaves. Everyone was cooked to perfection, well presented and delicious. We were delighted. The coffee was also very good and they had non dairy milk as well - I even got a glass of wine with my brunch, which is a nice way to kick off a holiday day! The lady welcomed us and explained everything in English and she could speak multiple languages with the different customers, which is a nice touch. Something really nice is that they post their menu with pictures and all on instagram- what makes it really handy to choose. Loved it. Location also super good, very close to the cathedral and touristic area. Highly recommend!

Lovely place! People are super friendly and welcoming. Food is fresh and very good (special mention for the cheesecake passion). 😋 The only thing I would say is that it’s a bit overpriced for the seize of the plates. But very good overall!

Best of all they’re open from 12-17 or 18. Life saver when you’ve missed the 2h window for lunch

A very cool stop in the city! Traditional French food served by nice people in a small, cozy place for a very fair prices 🙂 you don’t feel as if you are in a restaurant, but rather at friends place eating home cooked meal!
Pauline Depière★★★☆☆
Quirky buffet with local and biological food. Big boho vibe. The buffet had soup lovely cheeses, soup, 3 types of omelette and salads for a fair price of 9€ (if I remember correctly). As vegan or vegetarian options are a little limited. And sanitary precautions were not respected.

Nice people , good cooking, low price for unemployed people and student

A breath of fresh, healthy, air in between all the restaurants with processed, sugary, fatty foods. This coöperation serves healthy, fresh, vega homecooked meals. For a very reasonable price and even cheaper for students and people on a small budget (so not tourists people, we can afford it). Run by very sweet people. First time here you become a member of the coöperation for a voluntary contribution (50cents or more...so give more, they are doing an amazing job here). Definitely one for the books and definitely a place I love to come back.

Vegetarian friendly, nice staff and delicious food. One lady spoke good English. Compared to other restaurants in the city, this place is quite affordable however the portion sizes are not that big. As far as I understood it, the menu changes weekly. For starters we had vegetarian Maki (made with zucchini) and a tomato soup, both were good but the Maki were just amazing. Sadly the portion only constituted of three pieces. As main I had ratatouille which was good and my boyfriend chose fish, which according to him was delicious. As dessert we both chose a chocolate tart with pear, which we enjoyed a lot. It was delicious and not too sweet. Here, the amount was perfect. Even though the portion sizes were not that big, we would come back and recommend it 🙂

We visited the restaurant with our family, and we had a lovely time. Great dishes, a very friendly host, and a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

First off, if you are vegetarian definitely make a point of coming here! They have amazing French vegetarian options, which can be hard to find, with interesting and complex flavors (the menu rotates weekly). In addition, both the server and owner were unbelievably kind about my limited French. They explained things slowly and clearly and were very welcoming! Finally, the price was a very reasonable deal for a delicious three-course meal!
Jane Hanbury★★★★★
Lovely restaurant recommended to us tourists by a friendly, French citizen who knew the chef/owners. I have a lactose intolerance and was able to find a suitable choice on the menu. Great recommendation we had a very nice meal. Good service and friendly staff.

My wife is gluten free and this place had a good options marked on menu that she could have as its been difficult to find somewhere, the food is made fresh and was delicious, the owner and serving staff were very friendly would definitely go back if in Rouen again.

We had a wonderful birthday meal here and found the food, the wine and the service exceptional. A true treat. Such creative flavours and beautiful plates. Really recommend it and would 100% return for another 5 courses!
Nymfodora Dimitriadou★★★★★
Great place for a vegetarian dinner. The chef served us and was incredibly polite and hospitable. We had the 4 course menu of the day and thoroughly enjoyed the flavours we were offered. Glad to see a solid vegetarian option in Rouen that offers local produce and is not your standard vegetarian options, felt like a right treat. Many thanks!
Rosa Rademaker★★★★★
We had a very tasty dinner, even the non vegetarians enjoyed it a lot! We were with a big group and even though the chef was on his own we didn’t have to wait long for the food. Very impressive and would definitely recommend!
Gary Lai★★★★★
I have been to many vegetarian restaurants all over the world, and this was one of the best. It is a rotating set menu of the chef's choice, you only choose whether you want 4 or 5 courses, and what to drink. The focus here is the vegetables. We had a roasted celeriac starter, followed by a tomato and halloumi salad that was perfectly seasoned. Then carrots roasted in a cream carrot sauce with cumin. We finished with an apricot tart. On the night we went the restaurant was pretty empty and the owner cooked and served us. It's not far from the center of Rouen. If you are a vegetarian in Rouen, set aside a night or day to go.
Menno van den Bos★★★★★
A hidden gem, completely operated by one guy. Fresh and interesting ingredients, full of flavour. Surprisingly affordable too: 29,90 for a four course menu. Don't miss this one.

It was a pleasant surprise for us to discover this welcoming place early in the morning near our booked apartment!
The owner welcomed us with a warm expression, along with her daughter and we enjoyed a homemade breakfast in a simple familial space, with hints of an artistic and vintage atmosphere.
She's a really nice and cheerful person and it's a real joy to talk with her.
I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this place due to its hospitable atmosphere and delicious food and coffee!
Tim Brown★★★★★
We decided to stop for an early afternoon meal and were told by the owner that she wasn’t serving a full menu yet but did have some quiche and salad. We were fine with that, thinking we would get a little round quiche. Instead, we were given a large piece of incredibly excellent quiche made with Normandie cream, eggs, guyere, onions, camembert cheese. The taste was incredible and the quiche was cooked perfectly. The meal was fantastic and the proprietor was a joy to talk to. We highly recommend this place!

It felt like visiting a sister who is an excellent cook. Great atmosphere, great interaction with Clara, great food, and great prices. Clara treated us—and our country—very well. I forgot to mention the most important thing: it was the best beef tartare I have ever eaten.

Short review: Mixed at first, blown away by the end.
Long review:
The reviews were amazing so my expectations were high. Despite the cute french interior it felt more rural than i expected. The lady didn’t know what a flat white was, and after i explained it she made one for me and it was delicious.
But i actually came for breakfast. I saw the pictures online of bagles and eggs etc and i was looking forward to an amazing breakfast/brunch. Then she let me know there were no sweets today due to a delivery problem and when i asked for the menu it was basically just omelette/ham/cheese and plain eggs. The bagle was a lunch/brunch item. Rather dissappointed i was ready to finish my coffee and leave. I politely told the lady of my dissappointment after having seen the pictures online. Then she came back asking if i was in a hurry. I said no and after about 40 minutes they served me the meal in the picture.
Needless to say, I felt very special and well taken care of. 10/10, would recommend.

A no-frills home style restaurant with a kitschy interior and the face of the restaurant was the sweetest lady you ever met! Definitely very local and felt like we were not in the city. My brothers and I thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast. Our café lattes were delicious and the croque madam was divine. I wish we could’ve tried more! Thank you for a pleasant meal.

Lovely restaurant in a climbing gym.
We were drawn in by the good reviews; once on the premises, we had doubts about the location and the restaurant. From the outside, nothing looked like a nice restaurant.
But at the entrance to the climbing gym, there was indeed a canteen with very good food and friendly service.
The location is perfect for lunch on the go, good quality, and close to the highway.

It's really very good, of very high quality, with lots of flavor. Go without hesitation.
Practical Tips for Dining Vegetarian in Rouen
Navigating a city known for its traditional meat-heavy Norman cuisine can feel daunting, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. The restaurant scene in Rouen is increasingly accommodating, yet timing and terminology can make or break your dining experience. By understanding local customs and planning ahead, you can ensure that every meal is a highlight of your trip rather than a compromise.
Book ahead on weekends. Rouen is a popular weekend destination for Parisians, and the best vegetarian-friendly spots fill up quickly, especially for dinner and Sunday brunch. A quick phone call or online reservation ensures you are not left wandering the cobblestones looking for a table.
Embrace the lunch menu. Many high-end restaurants in Rouen that are not exclusively vegetarian offer a "formule midi" (lunch set menu) that is more affordable and often includes a creative vegetable-focused starter or main course. Lunch is the best time to try upscale kitchens without breaking the bank.
Look for "plats végétariens" on the menu. While "végétalien" means vegan, "végétarien" means vegetarian. If a menu does not list a dedicated section, do not hesitate to ask. Many chefs are happy to adapt dishes or prepare an off-menu vegetarian plate if given a little notice.
Explore beyond the city center. While the historic core has many great options, some of the most authentic and affordable vegetarian meals are found just outside the tourist circuit. Neighborhoods like Saint-Sever or the Left Bank offer local favorites with less crowd pressure.
Visit the markets. For a truly local experience, visit the Marché de la Place Saint-Marc or the Marché des Emmurées to stock up on fresh Norman produce, artisanal bread, and local cheeses. This is perfect for a picnic along the Seine or a budget-friendly meal.
Rouen’s vegetarian dining scene reflects a broader shift in French gastronomy—one that respects tradition while embracing innovation. The restaurants on this list prove that you do not need meat to experience the richness of Norman hospitality. Whether you are enjoying a delicate plate of seasonal vegetables or a hearty plant-based burger, the care and craft behind each dish are unmistakable.
As you plan your visit, remember that the best travel memories often come from the meals you didn’t expect to find. Let Rouen surprise you with its creativity, and allow yourself the time to linger over a long lunch or a relaxed dinner. After all, exploring a city like this works up an appetite, and you deserve to satisfy it deliciously.
