10 Best Tapas Bars Near Valencia Cathedral

Wandering through the narrow, sun-drenched streets surrounding Valencia Cathedral is an essential part of experiencing the city’s historic heart. The constant chime of the Micalet bell tower serves as a soundtrack to a neighborhood rich with Gothic architecture, hidden plazas, and the lingering scent of orange blossoms. After exploring the Holy Grail or climbing the 207 steps of the tower, the logical next step is to refuel like a local.

Valencia is the undisputed birthplace of paella, but the true rhythm of the city is found in its tapas culture. Here, dining is a social event, a slow-paced ritual of sharing small plates, sipping regional wines, and engaging in lively conversation. While the area directly facing the cathedral can be a minefield of tourist traps, venturing just a few meters down the side alleys reveals authentic culinary gold.

The secret to eating well in this district is knowing what to look for. You want to find the establishments where the countertops gleam with fresh montaditos, where the olives are marinated in-house, and where the locals stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the bar. These are the places that honor the tradition of "tapeo"—hopping from bar to bar to sample the best each house has to offer.

From the briny freshness of esgarraet (salted cod and roasted red pepper) to the indulgent crunch of a perfectly fried croqueta, the flavors here are distinctly Valencian. Whether you prefer a historic, wood-paneled tavern or a modern, minimalist gastrobar, the vicinity of the cathedral offers a diverse range of atmospheres to suit every palate.

To help you navigate the labyrinth of options, we have curated a list based on quality of ingredients, authenticity of atmosphere, and proximity to the main square. This guide focuses on places that locals trust, ensuring you experience the genuine warmth and flavor of Valencian hospitality without falling into a generic dining trap.

Below, you will find a selection of the best tapas bars within walking distance of the cathedral. These recommendations prioritize traditional recipes and high-quality local produce, ensuring your culinary journey is as memorable as the city’s stunning architecture.

This is a newer place and we absolutely love it. The homemade vermouth is incredible, blanco y tinto. The beef brioche is a must-try! They projected the games for the World Cup and it was great.

I visited this restaurant several times during my stay in Valencia, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots. I tried a variety of their tortillas and sandwiches, and everything was consistently amazing. My personal favorite was the sandwich with Serrano ham and cheese — absolutely delicious. What really stood out to me was the quality of the products, as well as the friendly and welcoming staff who always made me feel comfortable. I also really appreciated their wide variety of non-alcoholic drinks, which can be surprisingly hard to find. It made the experience even better. Overall, a fantastic place that I would definitely recommend and return to!

What a lovely little tapas place. We just had the Goats cheese tortilla, the local Turia beer and a lemon beer, all lovely. There are only a few tables outside, but a lovely find, the Agua de Valencia is popular here, will come back and try tomorrow !!

Really nice place in a quiet street. Tapas and drinks - perfect mix for a quick bite / lunch or a bit longer stay withe friends.

Always have the nicest time here. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The tapas is high quality and delicious - the tortilla options are my favorite! They say they have the best Agua De Valencia … and they might be right 😉 .. oh and very dog friendly.

Really great restaurant! We had a fantastic experience here, with delicious food, super friendly service, and a very welcoming atmosphere from the start. The pork belly was definitely the highlight of the evening, packed with flavor and easily the best dish we tried. The beer was great too, and even the soft drinks were really nice. The staff were lovely to deal with and made everything feel easy and enjoyable. The place is quite small, so we had to wait about three minutes for a table, but that was no problem at all and absolutely worth it. Overall, a really enjoyable spot that we would happily come back to.
Mathilde★★★★★
Omg what a cute spot. I just finished going to the markets and wanted to sit and have a coffee, I was greeted kindly by staff who have such a welcoming approach. The place itself is beautiful with indoor and outdoor seating and fans indoors. The little tapas bites which is €2.45 per plate are absolutely delicious, my favourite was the pork shoulder one. I was so pleased to visit on my last day in Valencia. Thankyou

We had an amazing evening at Tapeando! The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were incredibly friendly, spoke great English, and made us feel welcome and well taken care of throughout the entire evening. The tapas were delicious, especially the patatas bravas. The drinks were just as impressive. The Agua de Valencia is a must-try, and the sangria was fantastic as well. We also highly recommend the Aperol Spritz and the mojito! All of the cocktails were perfectly made. If you’re looking for great food, amazing drinks, and outstanding service in Valencia, Tapeando is definitely worth a visit. We would happily come back!

Excellent place, food and service. Don't miss their huevos rotos, and pintxos. Wine of the house was spectacular. I was attended very kindly, by Jessica. All the staff was great since the second I stepped in.

What a lovely place. We had a reservation so we could instantly have a seat. The staff is super friendly, the a service is a bit slow but the tapas is phenomenal.

Unbelievably good food. The beef rib was a huge win for us all. Tapas all came swiftly and was beautiful. All staff were incredibly hospitable, accommodating for the kids and gave some excellent recommendations. Will definitely be back if/when we are next in Valencia. Not a single negative thing to say about this place at all. Genuinely think it’s some of the best food we’ve had!
Daria Bason★★★★☆
We came during a busy lunchtime with no reservation and were lucky to get a nice spot outside. The location is fantastic right in the middle of a lively square with a great atmosphere around. Service was friendly and efficient, and having an easy English menu definitely helped. Myself and my five-year-old shared the fresh catch of the day, grilled cod, and it was absolutely amazing. The prawn dish on the other hand was a bit average compared to how good the fish was. The downside of the experience was the number of beggars approaching tables throughout the meal. It happened several times and made it hard to fully relax, as you constantly felt the need to keep an eye on your belongings and what was on the table. It would have been nice if the staff were a bit more proactive and protective of guests in that regard.
Lucas★★★★★
We had a delicious dinner at BARDEBARES. We both ordered the steak, and it was absolutely amazing. The portions were really generous there was plenty of meat, so we left feeling completely full and satisfied! The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the food came out quite fast. The prices were also very fair for what you get. The only small downside was that the restaurant is right next to another busy terrace, which got pretty noisy at times. It was a bit annoying every now and then, but it definitely didn't ruin our evening. Highly recommended!
Maura Kerkezis★★★★★
Wow! We just randomly picked a place for 10 of us and they gave us the second floor room all to ourselves at 2pm. Exceptional service! We ate many different plates and each person said the food was great. Lots of unique tastes. Only one dish was a bit salty (the sausage and potato dish).
Matt Fisher★★★★★
Very lovely tapas, good selection, we had potatas bravas, oil bread with cheese, crunchy pork belly, chistorra, and mushroom croquettes. All very good! Pork belly was about 3/4 fat, but that’s arguably quite normal. Anyway all good quality. Also enjoyed cocktails not on the menu.

We had dinner at La Terraza and really enjoyed everything we ordered. The garlic prawns were full of flavour and the beef empanadas were cooked perfectly. The Andalusian squid was fresh and crispy and the bread with fresh tomato and garlic aioli was the perfect way to start the meal. A special mention to Andrea who ensured we had everything we needed.
sandhya devas★★★★★
We stopped here out of necessity, just needing a restroom, and ended up discovering a gem. We started with empanadas and they were incredible. We couldn’t get enough, so we ordered more, followed by arepas with pulled pork and a patacón de pollo...and everything was outstanding. Every dish was perfectly cooked and seasoned. An unassuming place with truly excellent food. Don’t miss it. We can’t wait to come back and try the tapas.
Ryan★★★★☆
We went around lunchtime and the restaurant was not busy. We ordered Agua de Valencia, which we really enjoyed. For tapas, we had calamari, mozzarella sticks and chicken strips. The calamari was our favorite, lightly breaded with a nice flavor. The mozzarella sticks were our least favorite, as the coating was too thick and lacked flavor.
L & J Smith★★★★☆
Down an unsuspecting side street, this was a great find for lunch! We shared patatas bravas, mini hamburgers and shrimp ceviche tacos and had drinks of sangria. The hamburgers (didn’t even get pics bc they were gone too quickly!) and sangria were definitely the hit!

This was our second visit to Boatella, and it confirmed everything we loved the first time. The food is simply outstanding. Every dish we ordered was full of flavor, fresh, and beautifully prepared. Service is incredibly fast and efficient without ever feeling rushed. A very special thank you to Alfonso, who served us on both of our visits. He is genuinely one of the best waiters I have ever met—friendly, professional, attentive, and always making guests feel welcome. Experiences like this are created by people like him, and he deserves recognition for the excellent job he does. Yes, you may have to wait for a table, and the atmosphere is not the main reason to come here. But when the food and service are this exceptional, none of that matters. Muchísimas gracias, Alfonso, y gracias a todo el equipo de Boatella. Sin duda volveremos.

No fans outside so it's very hot in the summer, recommend bringing a fan. Saw the place was quite busy but think it's a tourist trap, food was quite average and prices were high for the amount we received. Maybe we ordered the wrong things? But felt it wasn't very authentic. Ordered the baccalau croquettes, calamari and the pan con tomate
Serena★★★☆☆
The food was amazing but too expensive for tapas only… We took 2 plates : one with fried seafood and the other with patatas bravas. Costed us around 35/40€ for this. Can find cheaper elsewhere for sure. +++ we waited 40 minutes for a table on the terrasse….
James Hadfield★★★★★
Sooooooo good. I need another star! €66 for the glasses of wine, tortilla, sausages, deep fried prawns, pardon peppers a Valencian salad and a flan. You won’t find better in Valencia.

We came here for authentic tapas and left satisfied. Quick service and great food. Even thought we had to wait for 15-20 mins for a table, the experience was worth it.

If you're looking for a good tapas bar, this is the right place. They offer a great selection of tapas and other dishes to choose from. The food is very good, and I would definitely recommend visiting. The staff were friendly, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The mini burger was especially tasty—juicy and full of flavor. I would happily come back again. 🍽️😊

SUCH a beautiful find. We are so glad we came across this beautiful restaurant. The food was incredible! Tomi was a great waiter, had so much fun chatting to him and lots of great drinks! 🙂 Our favourite was the calamari, I have genuinely never had calamari that incredible in my life. The steak was incredible , shrimp incredible! I will be back if I am ever in Valencia! ¡Muchas gracias!

Food was surprisingly delicious! Was a bit hesitant since its an Irish bar but would recommend! Tried agua de valencia here, and felt a bit watered down, wasn't very strong. We ordered the steaks and the iberico pork! All delicious and generous portions too!
Eliana Brown★★★★★
Order the Scallops. You will not regret it!! They’re tender, the meri sauce is to die for, and the added bonus of the scallop roe was a wonderful surprise. We will be coming back. Service was also great, very attentive and the place was clean and had a great atmosphere! Also the sangria is very tasty! We wanted to order more but felt nothing could follow up the scallops. We also really enjoyed the melding of flavors of the beet salad with orange and sardines. Was so great to have gluten free and dairy free tapas options!! Brava! We also overheard from our table neighbors that the squid was exSQUIDsite!
Rebecca Cohen★★★★★
Super cute spot and enjoyable service (Tomas was great) beet salad was amazing, but sardines aren’t for me, so get them on the side, as they’re very salty. Artichoke was meh. Much better in USA. Def like the vibes, and it’s well priced with great service.

Overall, a very much borderline 4 star experience. The pintxos selection is not stable - they are running out of them quickly and are not refilling in a stable enough manner. The pintxos themselves were quite average - the one with chicken and curry was fine although quite dry, the one with octopus and potato was fine, the one with chicken, cheese and green sauce was quite plain, the one with Russian salad and salmon was probably the best one. There was also a mini burger with some veggie salad, overall good too. The agua di Valencia cocktail was not good. The atmosphere was great though. Value for money for pintxos is overall decent. I wouldn’t recommend this place taste-wise though. Service wasn’t as friendly. The atmosphere was fine but the toilet area wasn’t the best
Raluca Elek★★★★★
Great food, atmosphere and value for money. Loved all pintxos, especially the jamon+brie one and the pulpo one. It gets very busy, but they're well organized, so waiting time is not too high and quality of service is not affected. A special mention to Victoria (hope I spelled it correctly) for the great job she does! Highly recommended.
Liam MacAulay★★★★★
I understand why this place was so well rated. Amazing food, great sangria, really nice service. The prices were also quite reasonable. It was very busy when we got there but it didn't take away from the experience at all. You walk in, claim your table, order your food and drinks, they ask for your name, and they call your order out by your name when it is ready.
Rob Crouch★★★★★
This might be the most chaotic and beautiful place I have ever been. A complete paradox. The house of contrasts. Pinchos is authentic and wonderful. The staff will drive you slightly mad, but they always deliver and they are genuinely lovely people who deserve a chance, especially the new Moroccan waitress. The beer is fantastic. The food is amazing. Everything else is chaos. But strangely, that chaos is exactly what makes it beautiful. Go. Enjoy it. Thank me later. Bourdain you would have loved it!🍻
Chrissy Woods★★★★★
I asked ChatGPT for a good tapas recommendation near my hotel and it wasn’t wrong! Arrived at 7pm when it opened and already a queue. We chose our tapas from the selection in the window, ordered an obligatory jug of agua de Valencia and went to our table. Every item was delicious. The goats cheese and onion was my favourite although the Spanish tortilla was a close second. Including bottled water and drink, €20 a head. Amazing value.

Escalones de la Lonja completely stole our attention while we were walking through the old town. The street musician outside created such an amazing atmosphere that we instantly wanted to sit there and enjoy the moment. Being right next to La Lonja de la Seda made everything feel even more special and full of history. The octopus was absolutely delicious, the sangria was fresh and refreshing, and the whole place had that lively, warm Spanish energy that makes you want to stay all evening ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Great tapas and wine! The service was excellent, we had a very patient waiter that took the time despite our limited spanish. And the tapas came out super quick and were delicious. Great location too, super central in the old town near the mercato and lla Lonja.

Good food and friendly service. We recommend the hummus with pita and the karage chicken. The review that mentions lack of aircon is nonsense, and isn't worth paying attention to, and not just because there *is* air-conditioning, with the unit being right above the door!

I had a reservation for 6:00 pm, booked through TheFork with a discount. At around 5:45 pm, I called the restaurant to let them know that we would be approximately 15–20 minutes late and asked them not to cancel the reservation. The staff member asked for my name, the number of guests, and whether I had booked through TheFork. After confirming these details, she assured me that the reservation would be kept. A few minutes later, she called me back and informed me that we could not come at 6:00 pm after all and that we would need to arrive at 7:00 pm because the restaurant was experiencing electricity problems. We accepted this change, even though it was initiated by the restaurant. We arrived at 6:52 pm with our two very young children. The entrance door was open, but the same staff member told us that we had to wait outside until exactly 7:00 pm. The temperature was around 36°C, and standing outside in the heat was extremely difficult, especially with small children. After a couple of minutes, I explained that my children were feeling unwell because of the heat and politely asked whether we could simply wait inside, without ordering anything, until 7:00 pm. She refused in a very rude manner. Our table was already prepared, and we could clearly see it. Even if we had not had a reservation, I believe that when a customer explains that small children are struggling in extreme heat, the humane response would be to allow them to wait inside for a few minutes in an air-conditioned space. When we entered at 7:00 pm, the same staff member suddenly claimed that she could not find my reservation and therefore could not apply the TheFork discount. She was rude, dismissive, and unwilling to help throughout the interaction. Her attitude made us feel completely unwelcome and left us with no real choice but to leave. This was, without question, the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. I was so shocked and upset by the way we were treated that I even forgot my handbag at the restaurant. I understand that operational issues can occur, including technical problems. However, there is no excuse for the lack of basic courtesy, empathy, and professionalism that we experienced. The way my family, especially my young children, was treated was completely unacceptable. I hope to hear back from the owner or management regarding this experience. I understand that unexpected operational issues can happen, but there is no excuse for treating customers with such a lack of courtesy, empathy, and professionalism. Staff who interact with customers should be able to handle difficult situations with respect and basic human decency, especially when young children are involved.

Had the worst pizza of the last ten years — tasted like a school cafeteria flashback I didn’t ask for. Dough sad, cheese reluctant, toppings apologetic. The waitress, however, was lovely. She’s the only reason this isn’t a one-star review. Give her a raise — and a better kitchen.
Rob Umberger★★★★★
This place is outstanding. We came as a family of 3 with an 8 year old, which admittedly cannot be easy for any restaurant. The food was amazing. We made a meal all out of tapas, and they certainly delivered. The server forgot to include one dish in an order of several. For rational people eating in Spain this should not be a big deal. Once we realized it wasn’t coming, we simply ordered it again. We were trying to be polite and order all at once, and all the food not coming did was allow it to be enjoyed fresh and just after being prepared. We ordered croquetas, jamón, queso asado and got additional orders of some food. This is a restaurant you should absolutely eat at. A major bonus, the restaurant is open all day. As tourists that - I hope, passibly - speak Spanish with a child, we came in around 330pm (1530pm) to respect the servers. We had the restaurant nearly to ourselves and never felt rushed and always felt welcome. The food was amazing, and I sincerely hope you will do as we did and enjoy a wonderful meal off peak hours. Cannot recommend strongly enough.
Kassandra Jay★★★★★
The food here was excellent, I came for a quick bite, excellent location and great atmosphere. The prices are medium, but for a good reason. A lovely spot in the evening. The service could definitely be kinder but definitely recommend.

Essential Tips for the Perfect Tapas Experience

To make the most of your culinary adventure near the cathedral, it helps to understand the local etiquette and dining schedule. Navigating the tapas scene like a local will not only improve the quality of your food but also enhance the overall atmosphere of your evening. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind before you set out.

Time Your Visit Wisely
The Spanish dining schedule is famously late. While many bars open for lunch around 1:30 PM, the prime time for tapas is usually between 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM. Arriving too early might mean empty counters and a quiet atmosphere; arriving too late might mean missing out on the day’s best specials.

Look for the Crowd
A crowded bar is almost always a good bar. If you see a mix of elderly locals reading the newspaper and young families sharing plates, you have found a winner. Don’t be afraid to squeeze into a gap at the bar; it is the best place to see the food and get the quickest service.

Order the House Special
Every reputable tapas bar has a signature dish or a regional specialty they are known for. Instead of ordering generic patatas bravas everywhere you go, ask the waiter, "¿Cuál es la especialidad de la casa?" (What is the house specialty?). This often leads to the freshest and most authentic bites.

Embrace the "Menú del Día" at Lunch
If you are exploring the cathedral area during the afternoon, look for the "Menú del Día." This fixed-price lunch menu usually includes a starter, a main course, a drink, and dessert or coffee. It is the most economical way to eat a high-quality, sit-down meal in the city center.

Cash is Still King
While most modern gastro bars accept credit cards, some of the older, more traditional taverns near the cathedral still operate on a cash-only basis for small purchases. Keep a €20 note in your pocket to avoid awkward moments when settling the bill for a quick round of drinks and a montadito.

Don’t Be Afraid to Share
Tapas are inherently social. Dishes are placed in the center of the table, and everyone helps themselves. Order a variety of dishes—some cold, some hot, some meat, some seafood—and pace yourself. It is perfectly acceptable to order one or two items first and order more later if you are still hungry.

As the sun sets and the golden stone of the cathedral begins to glow under the streetlights, the plazas fill with the clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversation. Taking the time to sit at a bar, watch the bartenders slice jamón with precision, and savor the local flavors is the ultimate way to connect with the city’s soul.

Valencia is a city that lives on the street, and its food is an extension of its vibrant public life. By stepping away from the main tourist thoroughfares and into these local haunts, you are not just eating dinner—you are participating in a centuries-old tradition of community and gastronomy that defines this beautiful Mediterranean city.
