Valencia is a city that rewards slow mornings and spontaneous detours, especially in the historic center. Around the Cathedral of Santa María, the streets twist into sunlit plazas and narrow passageways where the smell of fresh espresso and toasted bread drifts through open doorways. It is a neighborhood where you do not need a strict itinerary; you simply follow the scent of coffee and the sound of cups meeting saucers. Whether you are visiting the city for the first time or you are a local looking for a new corner to read the newspaper, the area surrounding the cathedral offers a surprising variety of places to sit and recharge.
Finding the right café here is about more than just caffeine. It is about choosing a spot on a shaded terrace where you can watch the morning light hit the old stone walls. It is about discovering a family-run bar where the barista remembers your order after the second day. The streets around Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de la Virgen are packed with options, but not all of them offer the same quality, atmosphere, or value for money.
Many travelers make the mistake of sitting down at the first table they see with a view of the Miguelete bell tower. While the location is undeniably beautiful, the quality of the coffee and the service can vary dramatically. A little bit of local knowledge goes a long way in helping you avoid a mediocre experience. Knowing where the locals go for their mid-morning "café con leche" or where to find the best freshly squeezed orange juice can change your entire perception of the neighborhood.
This guide is designed to take the guesswork out of your coffee break. We have walked the cobblestones, tested the pastries, and checked the Wi-Fi signals so you do not have to. The recommendations below are based on a combination of coffee quality, atmosphere, location, and consistency. You will find a mix of historic institutions that have been pulling espresso shots for decades and modern specialty spots that treat coffee as a science.
Because this is Valencia, the café culture often blurs the line between a coffee shop and a horchatería. You will notice that many of the best spots serve traditional Valencian drinks alongside your standard flat white. Do not be afraid to trade your usual order for a "cremaet" (a Valencian coffee with rum) or a glass of cold horchata with a farton, especially if you are sitting on a sunny terrace in the late morning.
The proximity to the cathedral means that many of these cafés are situated in historic buildings. You might find yourself sipping a cappuccino under a centuries-old archway or inside a former tile workshop. This unique blend of architecture and gastronomy is what makes this specific pocket of Valencia so magical. It is not just a caffeine stop; it is a cultural experience.
Below, we have curated a list of the twelve best cafés near Valencia Cathedral. Each entry has been selected for a specific reason, whether it is the best terrace, the most reliable Wi-Fi, or the most authentic local vibe. After the list, you will find a set of practical tips to help you navigate the local coffee scene like a professional.

Café de las Horas is one of those places in Valencia that is worth visiting simply for the atmosphere. The interior is wonderfully eclectic, with ornate details, velvet, chandeliers and a slightly theatrical feel that makes it quite different from your average café or bar.
The building itself is located in the historic heart of Valencia, close to the old city centre. The café is housed in a historic setting and has become particularly famous for its connection with Agua de Valencia, the iconic Valencian cocktail made with cava, orange juice, vodka and gin. The drink was created in Valencia in the 1950s and Café de las Horas is one of the places most closely associated with this local classic.
We were lucky enough to arrive at just the right moment and could sit down immediately. Not long afterwards, a queue had already formed outside with people waiting for a table. So if you want to visit, especially at a busy time, be prepared to wait a little.
The service was friendly and welcoming, and the drinks were very good. Of course, trying the famous Agua de Valencia is almost obligatory when visiting... it’s part of what makes this place so recognisable.
Overall, Café de las Horas is a cosy, atmospheric and slightly quirky place that feels like a little escape from the busy streets of Valencia. Definitely worth a visit for the unique interior, friendly service and, naturally, an Agua de Valencia.

Beautiful baroque interior . Get a seat inside and not outside as half the experience is the decor and interior design. The agua de Valencia is great (every place makes it slight different). Make sure to sample multiple places and always make sure they are using freshly squeezed OJ. The cheese plates and cured meats are very tasty as they are served on whole wheat bread, crackers, dried fruits, and walnuts . A flavor explosion. A little pricier than other places with similar offerings , but it is worth it. For two propyl you should start with a 1/2 liter of Agua de Valencia.

The best Agua de Valencia ever! Soft, smooth and dangerously delicious 🍊✨ You barely notice the alcohol… and then suddenly it hits you 😂 Elegant, refreshing and dangerously drinkable.
And can we talk about the olives? Absolutely incredible — served in a delicious pickled marinade with garlic, onions and gherkins. So simple and so good.
The place itself is wonderfully over-the-top: rococo, dramatic, a little eccentric… but incredibly cool. ✨ Definitely one of those spots with personality in Valencia.
Nikita Georgiev★★★★★
One of the most beautiful interiors in Valencia star ceiling, gold mirrors, chandeliers, the whole fantasy. Best Agua de Valencia in town, made with real Valencian oranges. Bonus: you can buy their orange liqueur by the bottle to make it at home (one bottle makes 3L), or grab a 1L take-away bottle of the ready cocktail. Atmosphere and drink both deliver.

We only had drinks, great atmosphere, was busy and buzzing with happy chatting customers when we visited. We don't speak Spanish but were understood and enjoyed the stunning decor and the service and drinks. Agua de Valencia was delicious

Bad place. We sat down and waited for over 30 minutes for the waiter to finally see us. In the meantime, people who sat down later than we did were helped immediately. We had to wave multiple times to the waiter.
When our order was finally placed and delivered, it did turn out to be a disaster. We ordered the Aigua de Valencia (a local cocktail). However, no Aigua was delivered. Instead we got some orange juice with absolutely no liquor in it. Would not recommend.

The Agua de Valencia was quite refreshing on a scorching hot day but don’t get your hopes up beyond that (:

Agua de Valencia is a must order here.
It is made with some of the most juicy sweet fresh oranges. Really delicious.
Don’t expect to get drunk on it though, alcohol content is not much.

I don't think they like tourists:( We sat down for a quick drink. But, unfortunately we were ignorred for quite some time. After 15 mins the bartender approched us and said we 'this isnt a hotel' and we could only get agua de valencia, beer or wine and walked away.

THE OG SPOT FOR VALENCIAN HORCHATA! Cool spot to have an horchata and farton (slightly sweet , doughnut like , bread stick). The horchata was just a little too sweet for my liking . But very nice spot and quick service. Their fartons were some of the better ones we had in all of Valencia .
Melissa & Jamie★★★★★
Came to Horchatería de Santa Catalina for churros and they were some of the best we had in Valencia. They were served fresh with a crisp outside and soft centre. The hot chocolate was just right too. It was rich enough to enjoy with the churros without being overly heavy. A big thank you to Naomi who looked after us. She was friendly and made us feel really welcome.
roylan zuriel★★★★☆
Came here as recommended by my tour guide that this place is one of the original horchata places - I personally enjoyed the horchata with the farton and dipping that into the horchata. It wasn’t too sweet which is what I prefer, I even ended up ordering two portions. Service was really quick and you pay as soon as you get your order.
Dario Fiorucci★★★★★
A historic institution in Valencia that is an absolute must-visit. The interior is charming, decorated with traditional ceramics that create a wonderful old-world atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to try authentic, chilled horchata, paired with traditional fartons for dipping. A delightful, classic stop right in the heart of the city.
Hande Demirci★★★☆☆
Honestly, I found it quite overrated. The dough was okay, but the chocolate didn’t have a rich or deep taste and was below average for me. We went because of the hype, but I wouldn’t personally recommend it.
The horchata was also not really for me. I understand it’s a unique and traditional taste, so I don’t think it’s necessarily the place’s fault - I just didn’t enjoy it.

Wow! Ordered 3 things and every single one was magnificent. My friend had the Acai bowl. It was amazing and served almost like a sorbet which was super refreshing and perfect for a warm day. It was a bit unique, but in all the right ways. The granola was so delicious that we asked if it was available to purchase separately. Sadly it isnt, but the lady I spoke with said "not yet" so we're hopeful that means it will be soon. I ordered the pastrami as it's something I love, but rarely find on a menu here. Loved the sauerkraut and the portion sizes was perfect. My wife had the Breakfast Bun without egg and said she could eat it every day. The service was fantastic and the staff was super friendly. I ordered in my very imperfect Spanish and when I wasn't able to understand everything she said in response, she switched to English which she spoke perfectly. Absolutely delightful experience. We'll be back again for sure!

Quick service, excellent coffee, and a plate that genuinely made me stop mid-conversation.
The smoked salmon and avo situation was already winning, but it’s the details that got me: seed mix scattered across the plate, a drizzle of olive oil that gave everything this lovely, silky texture. Pickled red onions on top because why not. Someone in that kitchen actually cares, and it shows.
Coffee was excellent. Service was warm. No long waits. Just a really solid, beautiful breakfast that reminded me why I bother eating out at all.
Go. Obviously.
Christian Breitkreutz★★★★☆
Good small coffee shop in the center of Valencia. They only have a few tables inside but usually there is also outdoor seating. I came close to their closing time I guess. Coffee is very good. And the pastries are worth a try. Safe option if you are around.

If you happen to find yourself in the heart of Valencia one morning, just a short walk from City Hall, be sure to stop by Kult Café.
You’re guaranteed a delicious breakfast, a warm welcome, and genuinely friendly service. The café is small and cozy, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. You can tell that every breakfast is prepared with love and care—as if it were made by your own mom.
It’s one of those places that instantly feels comforting and makes you want to come back again. Highly recommended!

Best brunch spot! Went in straight as it opened, so we didn’t wait in line that long, but the queue starts to get big very early, there are only a few sitting spots. We had the tahini banana bread - delicious! Eggs with toast, and salmon avocado toast - the salmon was so fresh and high quality! They also had speciality coffee and overall, the food had no mistake! We waited for our food for quite a long time and we sat outside, where the atmosphere is not so perfect. The service was slower, but they were very helpful and solved everything!

A lovely venue & my wife said ‘original is best’ as far as Agua de Valencia is concerned. My pint of Águilas was pretty average but there were no other customers at the time we went in & I might’ve got the first out of the tap for that day. All the same a historic venue with a posh hotel attached. Very friendly member of staff on the bar ‘ extremely nice bar snacks served with the drinks - especially the Wasabi ones.
Dwight Kenneth★★★★☆
Birthplace of the “Jugo de Valencia” cocktail . The roots of Café Madrid go back to 1940 and it’s recognized as the birthplace of Agua de Valencia and the focal point of the city’s bohemian, artistic and literary life. The Agua de Valencia was invented here in 1959 . Simple cocktail : fresh orange juice, cava, gin, vodka.
We ordered two glasses and they were eight-year-old each. This was our first time trying hook with Valencia. We tried it multiple more times during our stay here at different places. Even though the orange juice was probably the best here. It tasted like they may be add a little bit more sugar, and it wasn’t as boozy. I feel like it could’ve been a tad bit better. Or maybe I should’ve ordered it by the pitcher.
Overall, great ambience and friendly staff. I would say come early in the afternoon if you want to avoid a crowd.

Great bar in Valencia. Highly recommend Aqua de Valencia.
Great atmosphere. We went a couple of times during our four day visit to Valencia and each time there was a steady turnover and a nice atmosphere.
There is no dress code which is great - you can visit wearing shorts and trainers or dress up either way doesn’t matter.
Good attentive service. Their cocktails are prices at level as expected.
Decor is pleasant and the seating comfortable.

We originally wanted to sit inside the café, but we were offered a table on the rooftop. It turned out to be a great suggestion — we really loved it! The rooftop atmosphere was wonderful and made the experience even more enjoyable. A great place to relax and spend some time in Valencia. ☀️

On Saturday evening we stood outside the door without a reservation and the waiter gave priority to larger groups, even though they came after us, there were 2 of us. I understand that they care about profit. In the end we only got a glass of Aqua de Valencia. Otherwise the place is nice.

Everything is very delicious, and the location is also great. It is a place where people can spend enjoyable time, create beautiful memories, and want to come back again and again.

A wonderful cafe in a great classy neighbourhood. The location is great. The design is small but wonderful using the light wooden colours. The coffee is delicious. And the cheese cake that I have tried was so great.

The menu here looked unique and really tempting, so I was excited to try breakfast. I ordered the avocado salmon toast, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations, the bread was a bit cold and hard, and overall it felt like it was missing that extra touch of care. If you’re after something simple, this place works, but if you’re looking for a more special breakfast, you might want to explore other options.

Stopped at FINCA Bar de Barra for an Agua de Valencia and it was one of the nicest I tried while I was there. It was fresh with plenty of orange flavour and really well balanced without being too strong. It was served exactly how you’d expect and made for a great way to cool down in the Valencia heat. The staff were friendly and the service was quick which made the whole experience even better.

Great Agua de Valencia made to order right in front of you so you know you are getting the real thing. It is primarily a spot for take-away cocktails, so best to plan to walk with your drinks. But the drinks are delicious, service is friendly and prices are reasonable as the drinks are large.

A very aesthetic and Instagram-worthy spot! The whole place is beautifully designed, making it perfect for taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere. We ended up taking lots of pictures because every corner looked great.
The Aperol Spritz was well made and refreshing, and the prices were quite reasonable for the location and overall experience. If you're looking for a stylish place to relax with friends, enjoy a drink, and get some great photos for your feed, this is definitely worth a visit.

Great hole in the wall for a drink whether it’s an Aperol Spritz or Agua de Valencia. Pretty fair prices for its central location and such a vibe! Didn’t try the food.

We discovered Brunch Corner through Google and its great reviews, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
It’s a fantastic place — easily one of the best brunch spots I’ve ever visited. The food was incredibly delicious, the portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable, which made the whole experience even better.
Everything felt well thought out and satisfying, from the quality of the dishes to the overall atmosphere.

Excellent brunch spot. Great food, service was good, and very nice view of the plaza if you get there early enough to get an outdoor table. Overall great value - I'll be back.
Kate The Explorer★☆☆☆☆
I was really looking forward to trying this place after reading so many positive reviews, but unfortunately it was a big disappointment. The toast was so hard that it was difficult to cut and unpleasant to eat. It was simply topped with sliced avocado and a sprinkle of seeds, which hardly feels like a proper breakfast dish. For the price and the reputation of the café, I expected much better quality, more care in the preparation, and a more satisfying meal. Sadly, the experience did not live up to the excellent reviews.

I was so excited to try a new breakfast place! I ordered the egg Benedict brunch which came with dessert. I chose the pancake with fruits for dessert. We got the coffee and orange juice first. Then I got the desert… pancake 🥞. I told the waitress I wanted to eat the egg Benedict first and then the pancake. She said all the food was coming at the same time because the chef was very busy. I believed her. There was people waiting outside to come in and empty tables but just 2 waitresses. They took the pancake back. I got the eggs I was so disappointed. Instead of the sauce on top of the eggs, it was like half a slice of yellow cheese on top of each egg. The bacon was so undercooked. It looked not appealing at all. Then I got the dessert.. pancake with fruit. It was the same one she took back! It was cold and hard. What a disappointing experience at this place. It’s a shame because the location is the best. Will definitely not go back . Lots of restaurants to try in Valencia Spain 🙂 🇪🇸

We sat down in the evening for coffee and something sweet. It turned out just fine. The city center, although noisy, had enough silence for a normal conversation. The desserts were not too sweet, which suited us, as well as the price-quality ratio. The service was correct and fast.

It took a very long time before the staff took our order, we almost decided to leave and go somewhere else.
The worst part was finding a piece of ceramic inside the chocolate croissant, which was absolutely unacceptable. Luckily, I noticed it before eating, but it’s frightening to think what could have happened if it had ended up in my mouth.
On top of that, the place is expensive for what it offers. You can easily pay the same price elsewhere and at least get decent quality.
The chocolate dip served with the churros also tasted very bad and looked like it had been reused from a previous order, which was extremely unappetizing.

Great place for a break after visiting the cathedral. We only had ice cream in the terrace so can't comment on anything else. Service was fast even though there was quite a queue. The server was lovely and warm even though they were quite pressed for time. Ice cream was good as well.

Dropped in here on 2 occasions during a few days in Valencia. Situated right on the Plaza it was a great location. Everything was very clean we noticed and the staff were constantly wiping tables, mopping etc. we had the same waiter on both occasions, Ernesto. Godd English, friendly speedy and made sure my coffee was piping got. The crepes here are biiiggg. The camomile tea was fab ,not your ordinary tea bag either. Will return.

Here’s my first and probably last post from Valencia that’s not to say there is only one great coffee shop, there are many many many 😁
However I really liked MAYAN … a lovely relaxing business run by a family originally from Guatemala 🇬🇹. Granddad is the boss (quite right too if you ask me 😁) and the rest of the family work hard to make your visit a pleasant one.
Obviously no @cotsaward … this is Europe 😉 … don’t let that put you off just go and enjoy ☕️🍰 😁👍

Nice bar, Mayan themed (as aspected). They had a nice mural to show the coffee chain. The coffee we had (espresso and a cortado) were nice. The espresso was better then the cortado (which was slightly bitter). Very friendly barista. Everything was nice and clean. The only thing that makes a 4-star rating in atmosphere were the notes everywere (don't touch, laptop 30 minute max, you break you buy, etc.) It is probably neccesary but felt a bit negative.

Early in the morning searching for wholesome meal plus cup of coffee. Went onto Google map and came across this cafe.

The Guatemala meal comes with scrambled eggs, salted black beans paste, cheese, plantains and bread. It was delicious.
The coffee is simply out of this world, so rich and aromatic, never tasted coffee like this before. Flat white is a must to try !!!

A truly wonderful place!
The coffee is great, the food is great, the organice juice is great!
Location: 5* - Right next to the Torres Quart
Service: 5* - I wanted to practice my Spanish and they have been very patient and accommodating. The food was prepared very quickly and so were the other drinks.
Decor: Mayan themed (obviously) but it has a real raw and natural feel to it.
Food & Drink: 5* - The Tortilla was amazing. I have had it for the last two days, and will be coming back every morning. The coffee is some of the best I’ve ever had and the orange juice was so good I could have drank litres (thank god they only put it in a medium glass).
Overall, if you’re coming to Valencia, don’t leave until you’ve tried this place. A true gem.

I really enjoyed my visit. The restaurant is located in a lively nightlife area in Valencia, but because it’s set on a spacious square slightly away from the busiest streets, it still has a relaxed atmosphere. The outdoor seating area is beautifully designed and very inviting.
My waiter was exceptionally friendly and attentive. He was always nearby and noticed immediately whenever I needed something. The drink selection is extensive, and the food was excellent. I had the salmon tartare, which was fresh, delicious, and something I would definitely order again.
Prices are a little higher than at some other places in Valencia, but the quality, service, and atmosphere make it absolutely worth it. I would happily return.

It's a great place to enjoy tapas, have some sangria, beers, and spend a relaxing afternoon. The service is friendly.
I highly recommend the torreznos, king prawns are served with an amazing citrus mayonnaise, and the burrata is absolutely incredible.
A perfect spot to enjoy great food and drinks in a pleasant atmosphere 🍻🍤🧀

We stopped by here during Fallas to take a break. We were only going to have some wine until we read the menu. We had some of the best Patatas Bravas since moving here 1 1/2 years ago, the goat cheese Samosa which was absolutely wonderful and then the duck Samosa that stole the whole meal. The service was great, even though it was very crowded with Fallas. We actually stopped by friends to recommend this restaurant and now we are recommending it to all of you.
Oh no Diddums★★★★☆
We had a late lunch on the last day we were leaving, as well as evening drinks couple of nights before that, the evening atmosphere on Saturday was fantastic. The waiter on the evening was extremely friendly and helpful suggesting vegan options for one of the 4 people in the party. Cosy place for tapas and drinks,
Essential Tips for Enjoying Cafés Near Valencia Cathedral
Understanding the rhythm of Valencian café culture will significantly improve your experience. Unlike some northern European cities where coffee is often grabbed on the go, Valencia treats the café as a place to linger. The following tips will help you blend in, save money, and eat and drink better while you explore the area around the cathedral.
First, understand the pricing structure. In Spain, the price of a coffee changes depending on where you consume it. Standing at the bar is always the cheapest option, while sitting at a table on the terrace usually costs more. If you are on a budget but want the view, consider having a quick espresso at the bar first, then moving to a bench in the plaza to enjoy the scenery.
Second, order the local specialties. While you can find a standard cappuccino everywhere, Valencia offers unique drinks like the "Agua de Valencia" (for later in the day) or the aforementioned "cremaet." For breakfast, skip the heavy pastries and try a "tostada con tomate y aceite" (toasted bread with crushed tomato and olive oil) or a "bocadillo de jamón."
Third, mind the meal times. Many cafés near the cathedral transform into lunch spots between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM. If you just want a quiet coffee to work or read, aim for mid-morning (10:00 AM to 12:00 PM) or late afternoon (5:00 PM to 7:00 PM). During the peak lunch rush, tables are often reserved for diners eating full meals.
Fourth, cash is still relevant. While most modern specialty cafés accept credit cards, some of the smaller, traditional bars in the narrow streets around the cathedral have a minimum spend for card payments. It is wise to keep a few euro coins in your pocket for a quick espresso or a bottle of water.
Fifth, do not be afraid to ask for tap water. Valencia’s tap water is safe to drink, and most cafés are happy to provide a glass of water with your coffee if you ask for "agua del grifo." This is a great way to stay hydrated in the hot summer months without buying plastic bottles.
The area around Valencia Cathedral is one of the most walkable and atmospheric neighborhoods in Spain. Whether you choose a modern specialty roaster or a traditional Valencian bar, taking the time to sit down and observe the flow of the city is an essential part of the travel experience. The bells of the Miguelete tower will ring regardless of where you sit, but the quality of your coffee is entirely up to you.
By using this guide, you can skip the tourist traps and find the spots that offer genuine hospitality and excellent drinks. Take your time, enjoy the Mediterranean sun, and remember that in Valencia, a coffee is never just a coffee—it is an invitation to slow down and enjoy the moment.
