10 Best Tapas Bars Near Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum

After hours of navigating the vast collections of the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, hunger tends to arrive without warning. The area surrounding the Paseo del Prado is not just Madrid’s artistic heart; it is also a gastronomic battleground where traditional taverns meet modern culinary trends.

Finding a genuine tapas experience in such a tourist-heavy zone can be tricky, as many places cater to quick turnover rather than quality. You want the crispiness of a perfect croqueta, the sharpness of a good vermouth, and the buzz of local conversation.

This guide cuts through the noise to bring you the most authentic and delicious options within walking distance of the museum. We have prioritized venues that respect the tradition of Spanish small plates while offering a welcoming atmosphere for art lovers.

Whether you are looking for a quick stand-up bite between gallery visits or a leisurely afternoon of grazing, this list has you covered. You will find everything from historic institutions to modern bars pushing the boundaries of Spanish cuisine.

We have evaluated these spots based on ingredient quality, atmosphere, value for money, and proximity to the museum entrance. The goal is to ensure you spend less time searching and more time enjoying the vibrant culture of Madrid.

Here is a curated selection of the best places to refuel after soaking in the masterpieces.

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.
Tim Atanacio★★★★★
Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes. Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!

Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end. First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start. When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. Shops, more restaurants and good views.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at this tapas restaurant. Every dish was beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or family. What truly made our visit exceptional was the outstanding service from Mr. Frank Silvero. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from the moment we arrived. His recommendations were excellent, he made sure everything was perfect throughout our meal, and his friendly personality added so much to the overall experience. It’s rare to receive service of this calibre, and Mr. Silvero deserves special recognition for making our evening so memorable. If you’re looking for delicious tapas paired with exceptional hospitality, this restaurant is an easy five-star recommendation. We’ll definitely be back!

Amazing food for the prize! Great and superfriendly and efficient service. We loved the prawns, I enjoyed the Cesar salad, my husband not. We did not enjoy the beef Tatar . Pimentos were yummy. Good place to come if you are hungry and have not a lot of time.

Delicious food and fantastic service from Lau and colleagues. We had a large range from the menu and nothing disappointed. Staff were very good at recommending drinks. Would definitely visit again if in Madrid. Recommend to book a table as it is very popular.

Great Service & People-Watching, But the Food Misses the Mark Come here for the location and the atmosphere, but lower your expectations for the kitchen and bar. The Highlights: Our waiter, Moutalab, completely carried the experience. He was incredibly friendly, highly knowledgeable about the area, and happy to customize dishes to your palate. Ask for him! The location is also fantastic for walking around and people-watching. The Drawbacks: The food looked authentic but was mediocre and bland at best. The sangria was also highly diluted with hardly any alcohol. Verdict: Go for the vibe, the tourist-watching, and Moutalab’s excellent service—just don't expect a high-quality culinary experience.

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign. We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!
Bob Excell★★★★★
This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

We were looking to have a quick bite before we go to our next destination around 7:30 pm on Saturday and we search a tapas restaurant close to us and we came across this restaurant. We wanted to seat outdoor and they have a big area for the outdoor dining which was amazing. The menu was simple with photos so no language barrier issues. Alvaro was our waiter and he was amazing. He was tentative and spoke English well so it made our order even easier. The staff were very friendly and we loved our experience. We wanted to stay for a drink for few minutes but we stayed for food and almost an hour. Definitely if you are thinking to relax, have great food and amazing service this is your place

Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard. Tapa Tapa is exactly that. A relaxed spot for sharing a few tapas, having a cold beer, and taking a break from exploring Madrid. The tortilla was freshly made, the Iberian ham was exactly what you’d expect in Spain, and the croquetas disappeared much faster than planned. Nothing overcomplicated—just good ingredients done well. If you’re looking for an authentic local tavern, this isn’t it. But if you want a lively atmosphere, reliable tapas, and a place where it’s easy to sit longer than you intended, Tapa Tapa is a solid choice.

This place is just PERFECT. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, and super friendly staff!! 10/10 recommend! The seafood here is absolutely amazing, and I REALLY RECOMMEND the Black Rice - honestly a 15/10 dish, incredibly rich and divine. If you like seafood, you will NOT go wrong. The prawns and baby squid were also REALLY GOOD! Huge thanks to the Rouss for being so accommodating and helpful, and to Isabel and Agustin for being such wonderful, attentive servers. You guys made our night even better. The restaurant is very clean and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was truly a great dining experience - I’ll definitely be back!

Atmospheric wine bar in the heart of Madrid with that slightly chaotic, effortlessly cool Madrid style. The place is always buzzing - packed, loud, cheerful, and full of life. The interior feels artistic but with a playful sense of humor. Very solid price–quality ratio. It’s rare to find a place that feels this lively and authentic while still remaining very reasonably priced. During our stay in Madrid, we ended up coming back almost every day. From the tapas, don’t miss the tosta with baked goat cheese and caramelized onion (tosta de queso de cabra con cebolla caramelizada) - absolutely delicious, especially with a glass of vermouth (the legendary vermouth con grifa, served with a slice of orange!) or red wine. They offer several wines by the glass, and we highly recommend trying Bardos. For a main dish, the braised Iberian pork cheeks in wine (carillada iberica al vino) were outstanding - rich, tender, and full of flavor. Service is quite restrained, sometimes even a bit stern, but never rude. With such a lively atmosphere and very reasonable prices, this place is an absolute gem. We will definitely come back.

Los Gatos is a classic Spanish tapas bar with a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The menu sticks to traditional favourites, simple and familiar, exactly what you expect from a place like this. The food doesn’t particularly stand out, but it also doesn’t disappoint. It’s solid, consistent and easy to enjoy. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall experience, and the place has a good, easygoing vibe. Overall, not a place that will surprise you, but a dependable stop for a casual drink and some tapas in Madrid.
Leon Heutmekers★★★★★
Los Gatos in Madrid is a feast for both the eyes and the appetite. The interior feels like stepping into a vintage Spanish postcard: dark wood, marble counters, old photographs, and shelves packed with bottles that seem to whisper decades of late-night conversations. It’s cozy but buzzing, elegant without trying too hard — the kind of place where tradition and atmosphere do most of the talking. The food lives up to the setting. The tapas and small dishes are consistently delicious, perfect for sharing and discovering. From classic tortilla and croquetas to beautifully prepared seafood and Iberian ham, everything feels fresh, generous, and full of flavour. It’s the ideal spot to stand at the bar or sit at the table with a glass of wine or beer. And the waiters are friendly and professional.
Ministry of Foodies★★★★☆
It's a classic tapas bar. Worth stopping for a quick drink and some tapas but it's loud and crowded so maybe not something that would be particularly relaxing for long leisurely meals. The food is decent without being exceptional.
Mirjana Filipovic★★★★★
Typical place to taste some tapas and have a spanish beer and feel a real spanish way of living, especially if you are moving through life too quickly🫠

The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff were polite. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations. Some of the dishes were served cold, which affected both the taste and the overall experience. The menu offers a good variety of Spanish dishes, but the quality and execution were inconsistent. It wasn’t a bad experience, but there is definitely room for improvement, especially when it comes to serving the food at the proper temperature.

Victoria did a great service today, could help with suggestions in English and she was smiley and diligent. The food was fresh, bit honestly, I wasn't impressed. If you are hungry and want a nice atmosphere, you will be happy with this place

Enjoyed my first visit here. Jorvic, Paulicarus and Boothroyd making a return visit. Two rounds of Victoria beer and a couple of main dishes to share. Capital city prices. Last time in Madrid was 2012. Been to many cheaper Spanish destinations since then. Great service from Jeffrey. We sat on the front terrace. Lovely bar inside. Toilets found at the basement bar. €80 visit.

We ordered chicken strips and veal cheek sandwich. Chicken was very delicious and juicy inside. Sandwich was also nice. Sangria has little bit too much soda for my taste. Toilets were very clean. Staff was nice and helpful.

What a wonderful tapas restaurant in Madrid! It's nestled in the charming Plaza Santa Ana. The food was absolutely delightful, and the service was quite commendable. El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.
Brian Deurloo★★★★★
★★★★★ Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours. I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person. The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time. My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome! What to got: - ham croquettes - shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness) - crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

A small restauran with relaxed vibe compared to the noise and hustle of the nearby streets. Food was presented lovely, we tried salmorejo soup, manchego cheese platter, tomato toasts and Mediterranean salad. Everything was fresh and delicious. Their prices are not low but more or less reasonable having in mind the touristy area around.

Absolutely stunning Pulpa (octopus) and olives. Never tried anything like this. I travelled a lot, especially around Mediterranean, but their octopus was exceptional. Very acceptable prices and fast service.

I visited many tapas bars during my few days in Madrid, and this one left the strongest impression on me. It was small, loud, and crowded like most places in the area during the evening. We had to wait for a table, and the one we got was in a less-than-pleasant corner of the basement. But… the food and the homemade vermouth were the best I’ve ever tried. Excellent taste and presentation. The waiter was very professional, which made the experience even better. I would definitely recommend visiting!
Jordan★★★☆☆
Unfortunately the food didn’t match the fantastic service. We shared various plates such as the anchovies with tomato and bread ,the anchovies with blue cheese , cured ham which in fairness was very nice and smoky. The black pudding and also pork cheeks were very disappointing, dry and lacklustre. The vermouth was exceptional as was the waiters service. I feel sad the food wasn’t the same.
Columbus OH★★★★☆
We were seated downstairs, which was noticeably less appealing than the upstairs area. Our table was wobbly, and switching tables didn’t help. The bathroom door looked dirty, and the downstairs space overall felt unkempt. Service was very slow; the waiter was clearly working hard, running up and down the stairs, but simply couldn’t keep up. That said, the food was tasty, especially the fish balls. We ended up ordering two. Main dish portions were on the small side though. If we had been seated upstairs, the experience might have been much better.
Lan Phuong Yu★★★★★
We arrived hungry at 4 pm on Friday after a long day of traveling. Got ourselves 2 stools and a table. Our waiter took care of the customers in the order they came in. We ordered what he recommended #1, 5, 9 and 2 glasses of house white. He gave us a some anchovies and chips while we waited. All I can say is.. It was so delicious! The tapas came in this order and one was better than before. 9. Smoked sardines on (freshly mashed tomatoes) toast. 5. Smoked salmon with tzatziki sauce (lovely black caviar) on toast. 1. Prawn with mayonnaise and spring onion spread on toast. It came out hot and the shrimp was fresh and cooked perfectly. We ordered a third glass to share because the wine paired so well with the prawn toast. We got full, happy, and satisfied. We really enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend Taberna La Concha.
Barbara Bačurin★★★★★
NOT a tourist trap! Get the prawn on toast as well as the pork in 3 cheese sauce on toast along with the vermouth cocktail. You will love it! From the service (Kristian was an amazing host!), the food, the atmosphere - its everything you want from a tapas bar on THE tapas street in Madrid. Genuinely sad we went there on our last night bacause we would definitely have come back multiple times during our stay.

Tips for Enjoying Tapas Near the Museum

Navigating the tapas scene in Madrid requires a bit of local knowledge, especially in areas that border major tourist attractions. While spontaneity is part of the fun, understanding the rhythm of the city will help you avoid common pitfalls and eat like a local rather than a visitor. Here are essential strategies to maximize your culinary experience near the Thyssen-Bornemisza.

Time Your Visit Like a Local
Spaniards eat much later than most international visitors. If you want a lively atmosphere with locals, avoid eating lunch before 1:30 PM or dinner before 8:30 PM. If you arrive at noon or 6:00 PM, you will often find empty bars or staff still setting up. Going slightly later ensures the food is fresher and the ambiance is authentic.

Look for the Chalkboards, Not the Photo Menus
A general rule of thumb in Madrid is that the best food is often written on a chalkboard in Spanish. Restaurants that rely heavily on plastic menus with photographs of the food, translated into ten languages, are usually catering to tourists and charge a premium for lower quality. Look for places where the daily specials are handwritten; this indicates a kitchen that changes its menu based on market availability.

Embrace the "Barra" (The Counter)
Dining at a table often incurs a service charge or a higher price per tapa in Madrid, particularly in tourist zones. If you want to save money and experience the true energy of the city, stand at the bar. Not only is it cheaper, but it also puts you right in front of the action, allowing you to point at what looks good and interact with the bartenders.

Order the "Caña" Instead of a Pint
The standard beer size in Madrid is a caña, which is a small, cold glass of draft beer. This size ensures your beer is always icy cold and fresh, rather than warming up in a large pint glass. It pairs perfectly with the small portions of tapas and keeps you hydrated without filling you up too quickly.

Don’t Be Afraid to Point
If your Spanish is limited, do not worry. The most authentic tapas bars in Madrid operate on a system of visual selection. Walk up to the glass display case, point at the tortilla, the boquerones, or the croquetas, and simply say "una de esto, por favor" (one of this, please). It is the standard way to order and requires no complex grammar.

The beauty of the area surrounding the Thyssen-Bornemisza is that you can easily transition from viewing world-class art to tasting world-class food within a matter of minutes. The key is to wander just a block or two away from the main tourist thoroughfares; that is where the magic usually happens.

Take your time, order a little at a time, and enjoy the rhythm of the city. After all, eating tapas is not just about the food; it is about the conversation, the atmosphere, and the joy of slowing down to appreciate the moment.
