15 Best Bakeries in Marseille

Marseille’s culinary identity is often reduced to bouillabaisse and pastis, but the city’s bakery scene tells a much richer story of Mediterranean influence and artisanal craftsmanship. From the salty breeze of the Vieux-Port to the bustling streets of Noailles, the scent of fresh bread and warm butter is a constant companion.

Whether you are looking for a flaky croissant to start your morning or a rustic loaf to accompany dinner, the Phocaean city delivers with remarkable consistency. The local baking culture here is heavily influenced by the proximity to North Africa and Italy, creating a unique hybrid that sets Marseille apart from Paris or Lyon.

You will find traditional French patisseries sitting comfortably next to bakeries offering orange blossom brioches and olive-studded fougasse. This diversity means that exploring the city’s ovens is as much a cultural tour as it is a gastronomic one.

For locals, the bakery is not a luxury; it is a daily ritual. A good baguette “tradition” must have a crackling crust and a honeycombed interior, while a navette—the city’s iconic boat-shaped biscuit—should be perfectly crisp and fragrant. The standards are high, and any establishment that survives in this competitive environment has earned its stripes through years of early mornings and relentless kneading.

In this guide, we have prioritized places that demonstrate a mastery of dough, the use of quality ingredients, and a deep connection to the local community. We have walked the steep streets, tasted the crumbs, and spoken to the bakers to ensure that every recommendation meets a high bar of excellence. We have also considered variety, ensuring that whether you need a gluten-free option, a vegan treat, or a classic Paris-Brest, you are covered.

It is worth noting that many of the best bakeries in Marseille operate on a “until sold out” basis. If you arrive late in the afternoon, the shelves may be sparse, but this is a sign of a kitchen that values freshness over volume. We recommend visiting in the morning when the ovens are still cooling and the display cases are at their most abundant.

Before we get to the specifics, remember that this list is curated to represent the best of the city right now. It is organized to help you navigate the neighborhoods easily, ensuring that you are never too far from a great bite, regardless of where your exploration takes you.

Absolutely amazing experience! The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive — they truly made the whole visit special from start to finish. Everything in the shop looked so tempting, I honestly felt like buying everything! On top of that, the prices are unbelievably affordable for the quality offered. It’s rare to find a place that combines such great value with such a warm atmosphere. Thank you so much for this wonderful moment — I’ll definitely be coming back!

Amazing bakery! The pastries are absolutely delicious, while satisfying... leave you wanting more! I had the almond croissant - it was divine, fresh and flavorful (not over done)! I had to have 2! My friend had the Escargot Pistachio, great name - no snails involved, LOL. Needless to say, once we experienced this bakery we came back the next day for more. Don't wait get in line and place your order ans sir outside to enjoy the fluffy goodness!

Lovely cafe and bakery. Buttery and flaky croissant and strong coffee. We went twice during short stay in marseille

Shiny, clean modern bakery with fresh bakes (e.g. croissant, pain au chocolat, pizza bread, sandwiches, salads etc.), beautiful delicious cakes and good coffee, nice seating for a breakfast and to get some work done 👍🏻 I dined in and took away on multiple mornings because it was that good, friendly service too, I recommend! 😚

Super BIO coffee and Oatmilk cappuccino with oatly . Super desserts ! Nice apple pie
Rick Kuo★★★★★
At the time, there was only one employee in the shop, who was responsible for making coffee and packaging bread, but she always had a smile on her face
Alexey Subach★★★★☆
The pastries/desserts were a bit of a hit or miss. The apple pastry was very tasty - the dough was crunchy and the filling was very tender and the sweetness balance was good. The pain au chocolat was good, too. The flan bourbon cake was average to my taste - the filling was jelly like and the basement was tasteless. The cappuccino was good in general but it was served in non-professional cups and the cups were hot. The tables outside were a bit dirty, too. Overall I can recommend this place for puff pastries and ideally take away. Price/quality is fairly descent

One of the best patisseries in the world probably. A very hard working chef making fresh pastries daily that finish off every single day! Very delighted to know this place, have enjoyed it many times. ❤️ cannot recommend enough! Must visit when in Marseille!! Super duper like!

If you find yourself wandering the streets of Marseille, this is a spot you simply cannot miss! From the moment you step inside, the display takes your breath away. Why we loved it: First Impression: We were immediately captivated by the array of tiny, sweet cakes that look like miniature works of art. Aesthetics: Every single dessert is beautifully crafted with such detail that they almost look too good to eat (but trust me, they taste even better!). Atmosphere: A charming little oasis for anyone who appreciates fine sweets and beautiful design. This pastry shop isn't just a quick stop; it's an experience for all the senses. A must-visit if you are in Marseille! 🇫🇷✨
Char K★★★★★
Our genuine appreciation for their wonderful work was immediately evident by our second visit within the same day. We first sampled the Palm Springs, Kyoto, and Bronte, and right away, the quality shone through. The pure delicacy of the creations comes from using top-quality ingredients, masterfully handled by chefs with true skill and passion for their craft. With just one bite, you can tell everything is top-notch, and it leaves you wanting more. A few hours later, we returned and were lucky enough to meet the mastermind and artisan behind the bakery. He is really friendly, and his love for what he does is truly inspiring. This is much more than just food; it's a gourmet experience that you absolutely shouldn't miss, especially if you consider yourself a serious food enthusiast.
Claudia★★★★★
After having tried several pastry shops in Marseille, this one still remains our choice for its high quality gourmet sweets. My favorite is their exquisite 'Mille-feuille' as well as their 'Paris brest'. The pastry chef is a true artist. You helped make our Marseille stay special and sweet🤗.
James★★★★☆
I had the Madagascar Flan from this patisserie located near the Old Port in Marseille First of all, this isn't your standard patisserie - everything in here looks super high quality, and large (and more expensive than normal) The flan I had was flavored with Madagascar vanilla, and tasted very nice It's hard to describe what flan tastes like for people who haven't had it. Think of a pie, but instead of a flaky inside it's more like a custard that's present. Whatever it is, the egg-like mixture really came through, and it was the perfect texture - jiggly and soft but not enough to completely fall apart The best part though, was the base. This was crumbly, and added just the perfect textural contrast to the softer flan above it. Eating both of those together in a single bite was truly exceptional. It's a little more expensive than your normal pastry at around 5 euros, but based on the size of the pastry, it's a good deal Overall, I think this was a very good pastry - nothing all-time good but something I quite liked. 8/10

Had their chocolate peanut butter cake, it was amazing! The slice of cake was big, perfectly balanced between the chocolate and peanut butter. The place was also comfy and clean.

If you're looking for a cozy spot to indulge in some sweet treats and caffeine, look no further than this charming cafe. The staff are friendly and attentive, providing great service that makes you feel right at home. Their Victoria Sponge is a must-try - it's so deliciously moist and flavorful, you'll be licking your plate clean! And for all you coffee lovers out there, their highly caffeinated iced latte is a perfect pick-me-up. Trust us, this place is a hidden gem that you won't want to miss.

This bakery is amazing. I am in Kenya and wanted to order a cake for my partner in Marseille and even though they don't do deliveries, they arranged it for me. Very friendly service and good communication over email. I hear the double chocolate cake was very cutely packaged and very tasty.

I visited this little pastry café after seeing it on the YouTube show Oryol i Reshka, and I’m so glad I did! The desserts were incredibly delicious — honestly, some of the best I’ve ever tried. The girl working there was very sweet and friendly, which made the whole experience even nicer. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. I only wish I lived in this city so I could visit more often. I highly recommend this café to anyone who loves great desserts and a welcoming vibe. It was absolutely worth it!

20/10. Everything about this place is amazing- from the service to the shop itself. Nicolas, thank you for the delicious Madeleines AND for making me some AFTER you had already sold out so I could take back home. Highly recommend going here if in Marseille. Too bad I didn’t get a picture of the empty case before I left the shop (so I definitely recommend going earlier to avoid being turned away from having nothing to sell you haha). I WILL be back and will encourage others to visit as well 🙂

The taste is amazing and has many unique flavours. The mini Madeleines are amazing for gifts, I even got 5 packs back home to Malaysia!

Lovely shop. Beside the normal bread size, the shop does offer a mini version, which is exactly cute and has the same taste. For the first time I found the macarons that I like. They were extremely small for the price but I was so happy.
Mehran MxM★★★★★
A very nice boulangerie et patisserie by the old seaport area. There is very nice outdoor seating, where you can enjoy a light french breakfast. I tried a pain au chocolat which was crispy, fresh tasting and delicious. They had all sorts of pastries and macarons. A nice place to breakfast and buy bread. If in the neighbourhood, it is worth a visit. I should add that the attendants were very friendly and nice. A good way to start the day.
Shay Zukerman★★☆☆☆
Just Ok, not too tasty cake. The Girl who served us had a great difficulty to smile, and you can only sit outside in the street. There are better places to enjoy more than a Nespresso coffee in a paper cup and a nice looking (and tasty) cake in Marseilles.
B S★★★★★
Top notch little bakery with a good assortment of items. Little seating area outside of you don't want your pastry on the go. A quick little walk from the old port.
Julie weilnau★★★★★
Perfect coffee and pastry experience! If you are like us, we love to have a pastry and cup of coffee at a table outside of a Cafe. The selection is very broad for breakfast and it opens early. Most coffee shops or cafes do not open until atleast 9am. They open at 7 am! We are Cholcoate Croissant lovers, and there's was the best I've ever had. I've been to most of the western European countries and in the states frequent starbucks, as a comparison, and nothing compares! The cappuccinos were delicious with milk and sugar as optional add ins. My husband had the chocolate muffin and said it was one of the best he had ever had as well. We paid a little over 9 euros for 2 pastry and 2 cappuccino. It was so good I came back for seconds, pictured, I don't know what this was but it was also amazing.

Manal Troudi★★★☆☆
Impressive selection of vegan cakes, everything looked very elegant and well made. That being said, considering the presentation and the prices, I expected a more refined taste. The strawberry cake was a bit underwhelming, the cream didn’t taste as fresh as I’d expect in a strawberry cake and felt a bit buttery texture-wise. The lemon one was overly sweet: you could taste a nice tartness at first, but then it gets overwhelmed by the sweetness. The crust had a flavor I couldn’t quite place, almost like a slightly burnt cinnamon note, and it too overpowered the lemon. The hojicha latte was very good, almost as good as the ones I had in Taiwan, which is hard to find in Europe. What ruined the experience a tiny bit for me was that when we finished, we brought our plates downstairs and accidentally dropped a knife. I later understood they prefer to clear the tables themselves, but the unfriendly reaction was unnecessary as I was just trying to help.
LouHotch★★★★★
You don’t need to be vegan to love the pastries here. In fact you would likely not even know. Lovely flavors and silky textures. This patisserie is creating delicate and delicious items served with great coffee should you desire. The clean, cool and well lit space is a perfect place to get that afternoon snack. Great find.
Sarah Tarhini★★★★★
One of the best gluten-free pastries I have ever tasted, if not the best. Recently, we ordered an incredibly delicious cake that exceeded all expectations. It was truly a 5 out of 5 experience.
Hiba Al-Bahrani★★★★★
Made 2 trips during our time in Marseille cause we enjoyed it so much
Santana Grant★★★★★
An AMAZING vegan bakery with creative pastries that will blow your mind. It was hard to pick between all of the beautiful choices and we ended up sharing 3. The artistry and skill put into the pastries was impressive. Our favourite was the apricot olive oil. The shell is lined with white chocolate which added an amazing texture. So impressive! Service was also kind and quick. Even if you’re not vegan you have to go.

Our favourite café in Marseille. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the whole atmosphere feels so cosy and welcoming. The pastries are unreal too… you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The cinnamon rolls are hands down the best we’ve ever had and the carrot cake is absolutely to die for. Make sure to get there early because the cinnamon rolls sell out fast!
Mary Alani★★★★★
An amazing coffee shop I totally recommend for a morning coffee in Marseille. The service was excellent, the people running the shop were very friendly and the coffee and cookies / cake exceptional, especially the carrot cake and the tripple chocolate cookie with salt. Also they are very helpful and careful about food allergies. A very nice place spotted in a quiet road in La Panier, ideal for a chill and with no rush coffee. Happy I randomly found it, you should totally pay a visit 🙂
Ivan Tan★★★★★
An absolutely delightful find. Outdoor seating along a passageway with cool artsy vibes. Very friendly staff who speak English and reasonable prices. What’s not to like?❤️
Sal Chebbah★☆☆☆☆
Finding really good coffee in France isn’t always easy, so after trying several disappointing coffees in Marseille, we had high hopes for Coffee & Bakery. So many reviews pointed us here, and from the photographs and branding it looked like the kind of independent roastery you might stumble across in London. The setting is lovely too: quiet, attractive and next to a fantastic little art studio where I ended up buying a poster by one of the artists, Cath. I love supporting independent local businesses, so everything felt promising. There was a long queue and we waited around 20 minutes to order. Fine by me. I’d rather wait for something made with care. Good things come to those who wait. Normally. The lovely, smiling waitress enthusiastically recommended the carrot cake, telling me it was unbelievable. As someone living in London, where I’ve eaten some fairly exceptional carrot cake, I smiled and took her word for it. We ordered two double espressos. Another 8–10 minutes later, they arrived at our table. By this point I’d waited almost half an hour for a coffee, so expectations were understandably high. I smelled the espresso and immediately knew something wasn’t right. It was an extremely pale brown and unfortunately tasted exactly as it looked and smelled: flat, basic and without the depth, fragrance or complexity I associate with really good coffee. And that is where I struggle with places that generate a lot of hype. Beautiful branding, single-origin beans and the appearance of speciality coffee are not enough. Coffee is a craft. The beans matter, but so do the roast, grind, extraction, equipment and, ultimately, what actually arrives in the cup. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day, but this was probably the most disappointing coffee of our Marseille trip, particularly after waiting nearly 30 minutes and paying speciality-coffee prices for it. I’m increasingly reluctant to accept mediocre food and drink simply because somewhere looks good or has excellent reviews. If we’re paying more for quality, the quality has to be there. Lovely setting, friendly service and a nice place to support local businesses around it. But for the coffee itself, sadly, it’s a no from me.
Cody Tolmasoff★★★★★
What a delightful spot, slightly off the beaten path. The perfect spot to start your day before heading into the Panier. The coffee it top shelf and the pastries made on-site are delicious. Be sure to try the carrot cake bread.

I’ve never felt more welcomed at a bakery 🥰 the cashier was so nice and gave me a couple of suggestions about the pastry. And she warmed me a cinnamon bun cos it’s better this way (it definitely was). The selection is pastry is quite wide so you can have smth sweet and savory!

Everything (and I mean everything) is delicious. You can't go wrong here. The location itself is surrounded by nice small stores, not tourist traps. It's close to park longchamp, which is a must see. There's a bit of a queue and the owner may be very chatty, but it's part of the "small town" treatment that I love to get. Last time she offered my baby a small croissant and she was so happy. One can quickly understand why this place have been open since so long 💕💕💕
Kimberly Chronister★★★★★
What a cute little bakery! People were queuing up to get inside the diminutive shop to get their fresh baked goodies. We went 3 times during our stay, enjoying croissants, quiche, pizza slices, & cake. The service was so well organized and cheerful that you felt like a neighbor rather than a stranger in town. A particularly heart-warming surprise was how everyone we talked to seemed unbothered by our pitiful French skills and the way they wrapped our treats like treasured gifts, earned our admiration and our 5 stars! We would come back anytime and suggest you try La Banettine too!

Omg, best pastries I tried in France! We tried macarons , tarter a citron(unbelievable) the muellefreiu(spelled wrong) and simply to die for And My new favorite dessert. We had chocolate ganache cake, and flakey croissant! I rolled out of this shop. And I appreciate the ladies helping us order. We know a little Italian and Spanish but absolutely zero French, and they were very patient unlike some other French spots we stopped at. I loved this place and would absolutely go back!!

This was my favorite Patisserie in Marseilles. We went back a second time as it was really good. The pastries are delicately prepared and not only look appealing but are super yummy. And as good European bakeries are they are not too sweet. The cafe's go along well with the pastry and bakery items. Nice cute atmosphere to sit down. We really love this place!

Beautiful pastry shop! We stopped in for some macarons to go but felt very tempted to try more! There was also space to sit in and eat. Macarons were delicious and we really enjoyed the flavors - including orange blossom, passionfruit and chocolate, pistachio and raspberry.

Beautiful cozy cafe serving a variety of pastries, cakes, and macarons (as well as some limited savoury/salad options). Tried their cheesecake which I found a bit too sour, and a choc chip brioche(?) which was too plain, and coffee was way too bitter.

How lucky I was to have a short-term stay near this next level boulangerie. I visited many times for superb bread (they offer several kinds, from boules to baguettes to sandwich bread, ingredients rotating), often taking cinnamon rolls home with me. It is rare, I think, for a boulangerie to offer this treat, and Deville's are dangerously good. And their chocolate cookie is life changing. Service is always warm, kind, and patient if you don't have perfect (or good, or any) French.

How is it that Marseille can still surprise me, especially when a darling place like this exists. Tucked away and unpretencious, this incredibly adorable place receives you so warmly with lovely dishes. The decor is so inviting. Congratulations on such a memeroble experience.

Gorgeous tea house, British style, with great cakes and cookies freshly homemade and fantastic iced lattes or chai teas or coffees! Perfect also for people with intolerances, there is the option of almond milk for all the coffees.

Amazing service, high quality product that does not disappoint. Wish I had more time to try some of her sandwiches on baguette. They looked amazing. The owner was so nice and can tell that her heart was full. Love love love this place.

The best pastry shop that we have visited in Marseille with exemplary service and the people could speak English and French too. It's always crowded with a lot of local people in and out and they have a very vast menu with lots of pastries, gateaux and savouries too. They have an in house dine in area where you can leisurely sit and enjoy your food. Will surely recommend this place to all the tourists visiting Marseille.

What a lovely little gem! I would say this is the best in town. Wonderful donut with nice cream/jelly filling (not too much, bot too sweet), huge serving of tea, and a nice tables to do work. My new secret spot 🥰 I will add this to my new Marseille, France food tour, follow @singlemomfunandtravel and https://bit.ly/LearnLatinDancingInParis for more info!

We didn’t stay in Marseille for long but coming here was the first thing we did after our check-out and it totally paid off. Everything looked amazing and we had a hard time deciding what to get. We totally loved all the pastries. The only downside was that we had a hard time communicating in english with the girl that was working there

I love coming into this place! The service is super friendly! The woman always greets you smiling. It’s clean, very spacious and comfortable, and the bathroom is also very clean. The temperature went up in Marseille and today I went in to find they had turned on the AC. I hate to say it, but I was pleasantly surprised and sat there eating my lunch taking a break from from the horrible heat. My new favorite pastry is the “Religieuse de Chocolat.”

Tips for Choosing the Best Bakery in Marseille

Navigating the bakery landscape in Marseille is a joy, but a few local insights can significantly elevate your experience. The difference between a good pastry and a transcendent one often lies in the timing of your visit and your willingness to stray from the tourist trail. Here are some guidelines to help you eat like a local.

1). Go early for the best selection

Marseille is a city of early risers, and the best viennoiseries are usually gone by 10:00 AM. If you want a croissant that is still slightly warm from the oven, aim to arrive shortly after opening. This is especially important on weekends when families stock up for long lunches.

2). Look for the “Artisan Boulanger” label

In France, the term “boulangerie” is legally protected. A true “Artisan Boulanger” makes their bread on-site from scratch, rather than baking frozen dough. This label guarantees that you are getting a product that has been fermented and shaped by hand, resulting in superior flavor and texture.

3). Embrace the local specialties

While a classic croissant is always a safe bet, Marseille has its own identity. You should not leave without trying a “Navette,” a dry, orange-flower-scented biscuit shaped like a boat. Also, look for “Fougasse,” a flatbread often studded with olives or anchovies, which pairs perfectly with a glass of rosé.

4). Check for the “Tradition” baguette

French law dictates that a baguette “de tradition française” can only contain flour, water, salt, and yeast. If you see this on the menu, choose it over the standard baguette. It is almost always made with a longer fermentation process, giving it a complex, nutty flavor that the cheaper versions lack.

5). Consider the season

The best bakeries in Marseille change their menus with the seasons. In the summer, you might find tarts loaded with apricots and figs; in the winter, look for citrus and almond creations. A bakery that changes its menu is one that cares about the quality of its ingredients.

Marseille is a city that rewards curiosity, and its bakeries are no exception. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before catching the ferry to the Château d’If or settling in for a long afternoon at a terrace, the bread and pastries here are a vital part of the urban fabric. Take your time, chat with the bakers, and don’t be afraid to ask what just came out of the oven.

The relationship between a baker and their neighborhood is deeply personal here. When you bite into a perfectly laminated pastry or tear off a piece of crusty bread, you are tasting the result of that relationship. So, wander the streets, follow the scent of butter and sugar, and let Marseille’s ovens guide your appetite.
