Lyon may be the undisputed gastronomic capital of France, but its culinary reputation extends far beyond the bouchons and Michelin-starred temples of haute cuisine. Tucked away in its historic traboules, along the banks of the Rhône and Saône, and within its vibrant neighborhoods lies a thriving artisan baking scene.
The Lyonnais take their bread and pastries seriously, viewing the local boulangerie not just as a shop, but as an essential pillar of daily neighborhood life. For a visitor, exploring the city’s bakeries offers a delicious lens through which to understand its culture.
From the crackling crust of a traditional baguette to the sugary indulgence of a praline tart, these establishments define the rhythm of the city. Whether you are looking for a quick buttered croissant before exploring Vieux Lyon or a decadent dessert to cap off an evening in the Presqu’île, the options are endless.
This guide is curated to help you navigate the flour-dusted landscape of France’s second-largest city. We have focused on establishments that prioritize high-quality ingredients, traditional techniques, and consistent execution. You will find a mix of historic institutions that have been perfecting their craft for generations and modern innovators who are pushing the boundaries of French baking.
We understand that “the best” is subjective, often depending on whether you prioritize bread over pastry or atmosphere over speed. Therefore, this list is designed to offer a diverse range of experiences, ensuring that whether you are a purist seeking the perfect crumb or a sweet tooth hunting for the ultimate éclair, you will find your match in Lyon.
To ensure a fair representation of the city’s talent, we have evaluated these bakeries based on the quality of their dough, the sourcing of their butter and flour, and their reputation among local residents. We have also considered the mastery of Lyonnais specialties, such as the iconic pink praline brioche, which is a must-try for any visitor.
Below is our definitive selection of the best places to satisfy your carb cravings in the city. Each entry represents a commitment to the craft that has earned Lyon its rightful place on the global food map.

Boulangerie Saint-Paul keeps Place Saint-Paul supplied with the daily pleasures that make a neighbourhood bakery worth returning to. The current business is modern, but the address has carried bakery life for decades, with earlier operators documented back to the 1990s. Its appeal rests on range: pain au chocolat, bugnes, flan and gâteau basque all point to a bakery trusted across more than one speciality. The tarte fine aux pommes showed that quality clearly - thin, crisp, buttery pastry; tender layered apple; caramel, baked-fruit depth and sweetness held in balance. The brioche aux pralines roses carried its Lyonnais identity just as well: rich dough, pink praline, toasted nut and cooked sugar, sampled by schoolchildren as part of learning the city’s classics. The croque monsieur belongs to the savoury, grab-and-go side of the counter rather than the bakery’s best argument. Undoubtedly one of the best bakeries in Vieux Lyon.

The best Brioche buns that I have had here in Lyon. Also their caramelized apple pastry is something to try. It's something that one will always relish!

One of the worst Flan ever
It’s still very stale even though they said it’s “double - baked”
I had to throw away most of the dough part
The cream part is super watery with tons of sugar
There is no any vanilla flavor inside
It’s just something I would have never met in France but it still happened
The dough is not leavened well either
So sad and disappointed

I was told to come here specifically for their brioche aux pralines, but honestly, the real star of the show turned out to be the allumettes aux pralines; absolutely delicious 😋 They’re perfectly crisp, nicely caramelized, and packed with that sweet praline flavor… seriously hard to stop at just one.
If you’re stopping by, I’d definitely say skip the brioche and go straight for the allumettes, that’s where the magic is.
John R★★★★★
Tried the praline brioche which was nice. It was soft and filled with praline. Very sweet and nutty. Didn’t try any others to compare this one to, but I thought it was very good. There was a very small line when I got there, but it moved very fast. Service was quick. There were lots of other praline treats and baked goods which looked good.
Doka US Rus★☆☆☆☆
Got this praline for my child. I’m so glad she wanted to share it with me, because I took a bite and was chewing when I felt something strange. It wasn’t hard like the praline, but it wasn’t soft either. My mouth was full of pastry, so I didn’t notice it at first. Eventually, I pulled out this thick, sharp piece of plastic.
How could something like this end up right in the middle of the pastry? I can’t stop thinking about what could have happened if my child had swallowed it.
Thanasis Zisos★★★★★
A traditional French boulangerie at the heart of Lyon's old town. Tried many of the foods but the ones that stand out are the croissant, the pain au chocolat and the ficelle.

Everything here was absolutely delicious and affordable. We tried the croissant and the pain au chocolat, along with a couple of other treats and every single one was perfect.
The staff are super nice, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. It’s the perfect spot to grab some high-quality pastries without overspending. Highly recommended!

Absolutely delicious brioches! They bake them there and you can see the process through the window. We keep coming back every day! Highly recommended!
Teresa C.★★★★☆
Beautiful shop with beautiful Merveilleux. They are made with meringues with super whipped and light cream in the middle. We got a few and my favorite was the one covered with hazelnut. It's a bit too sweet for me but you may enjoy it if you are a meringue fan like my husband.
Madalina Preda★★★★★
Very sweet sweets and totally Instagrammable 😁 the smell in the place is amazing and it's very cool that from outside the shop you can assist and see how they make the little wonders - from montage to finish. Price: under 2 for a small one, 3.3€ for a regular sized one.
Jessie Ong★★★★★
A corner bakery in busy street. We were attracted by the aromas and also the eye-catching sweets and breads. The chef is making the cakes by the side windows and we enjoyed watching the cake making process. The service staff are wearing big smiles and friendly to serve. The shop s a bit small so we have to queue up to the door. However, it’s worth the queue. Only 5-10 mins waiting time

During my recent visit to 'Au Merveilleux De Fred', I tried two of their brioches – one chocolate and the other with sugar and raisins. They were both delicious, with the dough being particularly outstanding. A suggestion for them would be to consider introducing a praline variant, which I believe would be a fantastic addition to their selection.

I stayed in Lyon for 3 days and tried a different patisserie every day, but this one stood out the most for me.
The shop itself was beautifully decorated and very inviting. It was quite small, but in a charming and cozy way. There were many pastries to choose from, but I had read that their vanilla flan was the signature item, so I decided to try it at the café. I also got a croissant and a pain au chocolat to take home.
The vanilla flan was delicious. The pastry was great, the vanilla flavor was rich and fragrant, and the texture practically melted in my mouth. Personally, I found it slightly too sweet, but overall it was still excellent and not too heavy or overwhelming. It paired really well with an espresso, and the coffee beans were much better than I expected too.
The croissant was also very good — beautiful layers, great texture, and a light buttery aroma without being overly rich. Overall, everything was delicious.
Jacqui Turner★★★★★
Wow! What to say about this place?! So much to choose from & it all looks amazing. This is up there as one of our favourite places that we have been to. Next time we're in Lyon, we'll be looking to stay somewhere close to ALMA to make sure we can get there easily!
Damián Pizá V.★★★★★
The croissant is very competitive at a high level as well as its chocolate roll. Staff is super friendly, smiling and helpful. Coffee is also very good. Great option for a light breakfast
Charlie Liu★★★★☆
I ordered the chocolate croissant, and it was incredibly crispy and fluffy! The chocolate was of high quality. However, I wish the butter flavor was more pronounced; it was quite plain.
I came back another day to get a dessert. It is not sweet. The inside is moist and the passion fruit jam is tasty. However the vanilla mousse is a little bit plain.
Doruk Kandemir★★★★★
Absolutely amazing bakery experience! We tried the plain flan and the Paris-Lyon pastry, and both were unforgettable. The freshness and the pastry cream were top-notch—perfectly smooth and rich. The Paris-Lyon was truly a taste of heaven, with its salted caramel and the delicate hint of nougat cream blending beautifully together. Honestly, words can’t fully describe how good it was. A must-visit if you’re in Lyon!

Great coffee and food here in this cafe. We were walking down from Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière enroute to the old town when we chanced upon this nice cosy cafe. The coffee was great and they served really nice wrap poulet and great quiche. Highly recommended if you are ever in this area.

The paris-brest is seriously the best cake i’ve ever had in my life. Was so worth trying something new. The tried and true coffees and vanilla tart were also very good.

Lovely selection of cakes slices and great coffee. Lovely ambient, I can see the local guides take their customer here.

Wonderful bakery in Croix Russe area. If you are lucky enough to be nearby and don’t have to walk up the hill to get here (or heck even if you DO have to walk up the hill) it is well worth a visit. One of best croissants I’ve ever had - so light and layered and crispy. Pain au chocolat also very good. A thin apple tart was crispy on the bottom and layered with super thin slivers of apples- wonderful. The almond croissant was good but a bit sweet. As this is our first morning in Lyon we will certainly be back for the rest of the week to try more and more especially since it is fortunately just around the corner. Very helpful and friendly man spoke good English and humored my French in a nice way.

Incredible bakery. Very popular when I went on a Sunday morning but turnaround was quick. Well worth the short wait. Baguettes and croissants were fantastic.

Partisan Boulanger is far away the best patisserie in town.
Though it is not quite near to the city centre Vieux-Lyon, products and place are very quality and the owners are very friendly.
I highly recommend that you visit Partisan and enjoy the smell, texture and the taste👌🏻

Found this amazing bakery on our next to last day in the Croix-Rousse. It is a hidden treasure! You can get a warm baguette throughout the morning, and they make the best pain au raisin. Plus great croissants, and other viennoiserie and breads!
When our turn came, we entered and saw such beautiful pastries, that I could not resist - ended up with a mille-feuille and a Paris-Brest. Oh My Yum - perfection! Thank you to all the bakery staff front and back of house for creating so many variety of delicious treats and breads!

We stopped by this bakery to stock up for our journey, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip! My wife and I purchased a Praline Cake and it was absolutely incredible. It's a savory, sweet, and filling praline cake, that you will only regret you can't eat more of it. The staff were very kind, patient and efficient.

By far my favorite bakery in Lyon. I can’t get enough of their Nordic and Campagne (country side) loaves…it’s how bread should feel and taste. And the staff is always super friendly.

The pink praline tart and the bun were superb. My daughters had the cake and cookie and thoroughly enjoyed. Would recommend coming here if in Lyon!

From Oven to Street. At Les Artistes on Rue du Mail, the baker lifts a run of baguettes from the oven with a long-handled peel, turns towards the window, and tips them neatly end-on into the yellow basket below. The action is fast and exact, but the room gives it weight: stacked crates, metal shelving, ducting and the old brick arch hold the bakery in plain, hard use. From the pavement, you are close enough to catch the hand-off from oven to basket, with the glass turning that last hot transfer into part of the street scene. In Croix-Rousse, that closeness fits the quarter. Craft and commerce still sit near the pavement here, so the photo catches bread at the point it leaves the oven and enters the morning outside.
Dominique Hüber★★★☆☆
Very mid experience on a Saturday. The flan was bad: the base pastry was undercooked and the flan had a strong sulphur smell. They gave me a mushroom breakfast bun thinking it was a ham bun because there was some chunk of ham stuck to the side of it. It was underseasoned and meh. They seemed a bit overwhelmed by their success and it showed in the consistency of the goods.
Kimia Najafi★★★★★
I had the best croissants and pain au chocolat at Boulangerie les Artistes! The pastries were flaky and buttery, and they were filled with just the right amount of chocolate. The bread was also delicious and had a perfect crust. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I would definitely recommend this bakery to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic French pastry experience.

This hidden gem has everything you want from a bakery! I love that you can watch the bread come fresh out of the oven. They have a massive selection of delicious-looking pastries. The Pain Suisse was beautifully executed and packed with rich chocolate filling (though I like mine a bit crispier), and the daily special morning bun with citrus cream was absolutely perfect. They also make a solid croissant. I didn't get to try the bread this time, but it looked fantastic. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, a great vibe, and friendly staff!
Fifi★★★★★
Lovely bakery and friendly staff. The young man from Canada made us feel really welcome. Amazing pastries; we went twice in two days and tried quite a few pastries, which were all good. Our favourites were the pain suisse, the flan, and the tarte aux pralines! Beautiful surroundings, too. Worth an uphill walk!
Miled Nakhel★★★★★
I tried the chocolate éclair and oh my god it was the best chocolate éclair I’ve ever had. The crumbly texture on top was something I wasn’t expecting, and it added a really interesting layer and depth to the pastry that I didn’t even know an éclair needed. The chocolate filling itself tasted very high quality and incredibly rich.
I also had the cold chicken bun sandwich. The tomato and pesto paired really well with it, and the lettuce tasted incredibly fresh, which made the whole sandwich feel light but still really satisfying.
This might honestly one of the best bakeries I’ve been to so far in Lyon. The atmosphere looked really pleasant (even though I took my food to go), and the service while brief, felt genuine and very friendly.
Definitely recommend!

It’s definitely one of the worst Bun I have ever had because I had to spit out and throw it to the trash bin ALL OF THEM!!!!
Such a waste!!!
The dough is not leavened well so it just looks so pretty but tastes like raw….
I couldn’t even bite twice, let alone savoring it
Super sad and disappointed of wasting my time and money here

If you know what poolish means, this place is for you. If you don't, look it up and then go: all or nearly all the breads here are sourdough and quite delicious! It was an enchanting stop to end a morning at the large market in Croix-Rousse and environs. The waiter we encountered gladly tolerated our poor French and easily answered our questions in English. We sat outside, sipped a coffee, lunched on our bread (and cheese and olives from the market), and watched people walk along the street and the birds in the trees in the small park across the street. The delightful breeze took the edge off the hot day.

The guy behind the counter, Tom, was incredibly friendly and helpful - it felt like I was getting an expert consultation on Lyonnaise patisserie! I will absolutely visit again when I’m back in Lyon.
The almond croissant was the best I’d had in Lyon and the New York Roll was excellent. I’d recommend them in particular but everything was excellent

I have been there twice in the last while. The staff are very patient and the food is good quality and not to expensive. 4.50€ for a sandwich with chicken and I believe but I may be incorrect 1.60€ for a pain au raisin.

The staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. He tried to find out what we liked and how sweet we want in the pastries. Very very generous samples as well. We got brioche (with some red sweet stuffing I can’t remember the name), almond croissant, pain aux raisins and another one with the red stuffing and some small ones he said goes well with coffee. Can’t recommend enough. They really know how to make pastries well. The church we were visiting is right around the corner of the bakery. Merci

So good, highly recommend if you're anywhere near the area! We had a sandwich, a quiche, and a couple of desserts. Everything was lovely, and very affordable. There was a bit of a line to wait, but honestly it was good as it let us figure out what we wanted from the big range! There's a lot of public benches and seating very near, so you can sit and eat while watching Lyon go by.

Very cute boulangerie in the center of Lyon. They have some indoor seating, the offer amazing baked goods. I tried their Les Roules aux pralines roses and it was buttery, crispy on the edges, soft on the inside and well balanced with the pralines (not too sweet).
The staff is super friendly and kind as well! I definitely recommend this place when you’re in Lyon.

La Roulézienne (Pastry with vanilla cream) was glorious. So perfect with a cappuccino for a relaxing moment. It's not too sweet or heavy. The pastry is perfectly crispy and soft. Nice simple seating inside and great view for outside/outdoor seating

It’s a nice bakery, the staff is professional, kind and diligent. But they did not have cappuccino, and the coffee they made me was too strong and bitter. Later I got a better coffer from one of the vendors in the market across the street.
And there were not enough chairs by the tables, so my family sat down and I had to stand.
Not great, but good overall .

One of the best 'boulangeries' that we ran upon during our stay in Lyon. Croissants and pain au chocolats were very delicious, but personally I would recommend to try the eclair. Also if you are a fan of salty taste the savory options were very delicious as well.

A great idea for taking your breakfast on the go. Good prices and great taste - croissants and other delights. Keep in mind that u pay with cash if the bill is under 5€ and that the takeaway coffee is without a cup - not very practical. If u want to have a sit there are two cute tables available inside the store.

Lovely bakery, great products and beautiful presentation! The personnel was very friendly, speaking English as well. The croissant and brioche was fantastic, a good start for the day. I'd definitely come back to try the other products as well... There's a small area to eat in and coffee is served as well.

Coffee shop with delicious 🍞 bread
Small place so maybe you will have to take away your Coffee or bread

One of the best Millefeuilles that I have tasted in France. This pastry in Lyon offers countless choices of cakes and pastries. Service was a bit wanting. This is expected when one person is the cashier, the server and everything in between.
Tips for Enjoying Lyon’s Bakery Scene
To truly experience the best of Lyon’s baking culture, it helps to know how the locals navigate their neighborhood shops. The rhythm of the day dictates the inventory, and understanding these nuances can elevate your experience from good to exceptional. Here are some essential strategies to ensure you get the freshest products and the most authentic taste of the city.
1). Go Early for Bread, Later for Pastries
The French baking schedule is precise. Baguettes and traditional loaves are usually baked first thing in the morning, often before sunrise, to be ready for breakfast. If you want bread that is still warm from the oven, arrive between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Conversely, if you are after intricate pastries or viennoiseries, a mid-morning visit often yields the largest selection, as bakers finish their pastry displays after the initial bread rush.
2). Learn the Local Lingo
While many bakers in central Lyon speak some English, knowing a few key terms goes a long way. Ask for a “baguette tradition” if you want a bread made with only flour, water, salt, and yeast (no additives). If you want it well-baked and crusty, ask for “bien cuite.” If you prefer a softer crust, request “pas trop cuite.” For a sliced loaf, the magic word is “tranchée.”
3). Embrace the Praline
Lyon is famous for its pink pralines—almonds coated in bright pink, caramelized sugar. You will see them in tarts, brioches, and even croissants. While the color can look artificial to outsiders, the flavor is a deep, nutty caramel. The “brioche aux pralines” is a specialty of the region and is often sold as a large, shareable loaf rather than an individual pastry. Do not leave Lyon without trying it, but be warned: it is incredibly rich and sweet.
4). Check for “Artisan Boulanger” Status
In France, the title of “Artisan Boulanger” is legally protected. It means the bread is kneaded, shaped, and baked on the premises. If a shop is merely a “depot de pain,” they are selling bread baked elsewhere, often from frozen dough. To ensure you are getting the authentic experience, look for the “Artisan Boulanger” sign in the window or ask the staff if they bake on-site.
4). Plan for Closures
Lyon’s bakers work grueling hours, often starting at 3:00 AM. Consequently, most independent bakeries close for at least one or two days a week to rest. It is very common for a top bakery to be closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. Additionally, many bakeries close for several weeks during August for summer holidays. Always check the specific opening hours online before making a special trip across the city.
Lyon’s bakery scene is a living testament to the city’s dedication to quality and tradition. Whether you are biting into a flaky croissant on the steps of the Théâtre des Célestins or tearing off a chunk of sourdough to accompany a picnic in Parc de la Tête d’Or, you are participating in a ritual that has defined this city for centuries.
Exploring these bakeries is not just about satisfying hunger; it is about connecting with the artisans who wake up in the middle of the night to ensure the city smells of butter and toasted flour by dawn. Take your time, chat with the bakers, and savor every bite. In Lyon, the bakery is not just a stop on your itinerary—it is the destination.
