Nestled along the Alsace Wine Route, Colmar feels like a storybook come to life, with its pastel half-timbered houses and gentle canals. Yet, as the sun begins to dip behind the Vosges mountains, the town reveals a more elevated, vibrant side. The city’s rooftops transform into breezy terraces, offering panoramic views that stretch from tiled gables to distant vineyards.
Unlike major metropolitan hubs like Paris or Marseille, Colmar offers a unique rooftop experience defined by intimacy and medieval charm. Here, you won’t find towering skyscrapers; instead, you’ll discover hidden terraces perched atop historic buildings and boutique hotels. These spots offer a rare perspective, allowing you to look down upon the "Little Venice" district and the bustling squares below.
For the discerning traveler, finding a high vantage point in a town known for low-rise architecture can be a challenge. That is why we have curated a list of the most exceptional elevated terraces, panoramic restaurants, and chic bars that offer an escape from the cobblestone crowds. Whether you are seeking a crisp Alsatian white wine or a creative cocktail, there is a perch waiting for you.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and the authenticity of the Alsatian experience. We have evaluated these locations based on their drink menus, the uniqueness of their views, and the overall ambiance. From sunset aperitifs to late-night digestifs, these are the spots where locals and savvy tourists go to see the city from a different angle.
Before you map out your evening, it is important to understand the local rhythm. Colmar is a city of early dinners and relaxed evenings, meaning many rooftop terraces fill up quickly during the golden hour. Reservations are often essential, especially during the magical Christmas market season or the peak summer months.
Below, we have gathered the definitive list of the best rooftop bars in Colmar to elevate your visit. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a scenic spot to unwind, this selection ensures you will find the perfect sky-high retreat.

One of those rare bars where the staff make the evening. They clearly know their wines inside out, but what really stood out was how quickly they picked up on what we liked; each pour built on the last, and the evening just kept getting better. We could easily have stayed another three hours.
The wine list changes weekly and is full of finds, including an Alsace Syrah, which we'd never come across and won't forget. The nibbles are generous enough to count as dinner, and the whole atmosphere pulls you in and makes you want to settle in for the night.
If you're in Colmar and love wine, don't miss this place.

A quaint and wonderfully warm spot that made our evening in Colmar feel unforgettable. The candlelit setting created a cozy, intimate atmosphere that was perfect for relaxing with friends. The staff recommended an incredible bottle of La Grande Dame 2015 that paired beautifully with a caviar presentation fit for royalty. Everything came together so seamlessly that it felt less like a night out and more like a special moment shared in someone’s home. A must-visit if you want a charming, elevated experience in Colmar.

A real locals spot - wonderful and cozy bar with warm hospitality, amazing Champagne and wine choices and great food. Florian is the best, he really takes the time to make every guest feel special. He pours his heart into this place and it shows! La Folie feels like home.

Absolutely amazing wine bar! The owner was so kind and helpful, helping us pick our selections of wine based on what we normally liked and recommending local varietals. Even helped us find ‘locals’ dinner options out of old town. Such an amazing spot, came back the next day!

Best cocktail bar in Colmar. We had the best experience with Greg! He was able to make me a drink similar to the original one with ingredients he had available. Super friendly, perfect English and knowledge of so many wines! He made one of the best Manhattan's for my husband!

Love this place. I've poped-in on my last night in Colmar. Excellent coctails. Little bit high priced but when you get your private terasse with it, it is worth it. 😉 Staff is very polite and at your service.

Bad experience tonight. The France match was scheduled to be broadcast at 11 pm… but there was no sound from the game because there was a DJ there who was deliberately shouting into his microphone, making it impossible to understand.
Very disappointed with this experience, as we came to watch a match.

The place is magnificent.
The service is great; at first, it was a victim of its own success, but now everything is running smoothly.
Thank you to the Bonaventure staff ❤️
New season, there are some new features, and the place is still just as magnificent. The service is much faster and very welcoming.
For the pétanque courts, zone markers and score counters would be nice.

A few friends and I decided to spend the evening at this bar to watch a football match. It could have been a festive evening if we hadn't had to pay €6 just to get in. "Cheap," you might say, but when you pay to get in, you have the right to expect a minimum level of service. Indeed, there were several hundred people there that evening, the staff couldn't keep up, it took 30 minutes to finally be served, and the giant indoor screen was out of sync with the outdoor screen, which completely ruined the football experience. At €6 per entry (clearly an exceptionally high price for this type of event), they couldn't even be bothered to hire someone to handle these kinds of issues. If you can't manage a certain number of customers, I strongly advise you to limit entry to this type of event. Some Machiavellian minds might think you prioritized revenue from ticket sales over service quality. Everyone can judge management's approach for themselves.
I'm giving it two stars because victory was achieved; that's the only thing that saved you from disaster. You can thank the French national team for that.

Great restaurant, good service, and a great atmosphere.
Would gladly come back anytime...

BIG RIP-OFF AFTER FAV!
€5 entry for a Brazilian-themed party on August 3rd. The atmosphere was awful, with absolutely no ambiance, and on top of that, the drinks were expensive on top of the entrance fee. Really disappointed by this place, which was good the rest of the year. It's clearly all about making money off people. Nothing like getting ripped off at the end of the night.

Good atmosphere, good music! Barmaid really nice. Not that big of a bar but very chill. Like the music and the cocktails. I recommend!

Unfortunately we didn't have a good time. The bar is very pretty and well put together but we really couldn't get over the fact that they did not make any effort when we asked to eat something without meat. We asked for a simple plate of cheese but the server just said no in a quite unpleasant way. It's unbelievable to not have a single vegetarian option on a menu in 2024.

Great cocktails! We had a very pleasant time stopping here for some cocktails while visiting Colmar. The bar is right in the city center and is beautifully decorated in a way that is vibrant and young. Beautiful location and delicious drinks.

So good we went twice! The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and comforting, exactly what you need after a day of exploring the city of Colmar and the Christmas markets. The wine list is impressive, featuring excellent selections that pair beautifully with the food. Speaking of food, the flavors were exquisite on both visits.
It’s rare to find a spot that combines such high quality with such a welcoming vibe. Whether you are a wine enthusiast or just looking for a delicious meal in a warm setting, this is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
Dario Vega★★★★★
Definitely a must. We really liked this place and ended up coming back on two different nights. It’s a cozy spot with a great wine selection. We loved that you can order several dishes and the portions are perfect for sharing. The guy and the girl working there took really good care of us.
We noticed that a lot of locals come here and they always make reservations, so if you want to go, you should arrive early and ask for a table — otherwise it’s almost impossible to get in. It’s always full, and that definitely speaks to the quality of the products.
Would definitely come back again!
Neil Lawrence★★★★★
Had an amazing evening at this lovely wine bar, which also does a really nice line of food too - great if you want to avoid the 'black hole' of Schwendi drawing you back in.
The place is run by just two people, but no one was kept waiting. The knowledge of wine was amazing, and I opted for the surprise discovery option twice to taste something new to me and to learn about the wine of the area.
Perfect place - will be top of our choices of destination when we move here
Anna B★★★★★
Everything was just perfect! We came in for a little drinks and little apéros.. but we felt like we hit jackpot. The wines we got were really tasty, and was just like what I wanted.. with so much to choose we asked for the server’s suggestions and then we orders 4 plats which were just kept getting better and better.. the twist in different dishes were very surreal.. kept melting in our mouth.
Also we ended up buying a bottle of wine for our way back home.
You should definitely go in without a second thought. I highly recommend it very much.

Great place tucked away from the hectic Colmar streets. We stopped by for appetitive. A wide selection of drinks. 14 beers can be freshly tapped at the same time. The service is attentive and caters to every need. The atmosphere is pleasantly convivial. Prices are reasonable (0.5l = €7-9).
The toilets are small, clean, and smell nice. Free Wi-Fi is available when ordering. Orders can be placed in English and French.
Ideal for a break from the stressful sightseeing in Colmar.
Josh Beck★★☆☆☆
A very nice place. A very kind and friendly staff.
But one client smoking by the door leaves the whole interior smelling of smoke.
And for a vegetarian it goes like this “yes we can takes the lardons off the tarte flambee” “ok can we have one with lardons on half?” “No” “ok can we have the tarte flambee with garlic without the lardons” “Oh no we can’t take the lardons off that one, kitchen rules”
Well despite the lovely kind staff the end result is dumb and the smell of smoke and the arbitrary decisions of the management earns a generous two stars.

Brilliant bar. Service was immense. We were treated so well by one of the staff who spoke great English to help us order.
The beers were delicious, the wine just as good and the Comte was sublime!

Terrible service. We were early to check in to our Travel Homes - The Bredele. So we decided to spend 15-20 minutes to have some coffee and hot chocolate. Excellent cafe with lovely service and a wonderful, comfy ambiance. We enjoyed our drinks (dirty chai latte, espresso martini, cremant rosé, riesling), chatting, and reading in this warm space. Merci!
Update: we returned 2 days later for a tasty brunch. It was a Sunday and many other places were full or closed. There was a short line waiting to get in, but the friendly host assured us they would soon have room. 5 minutes later we had a cosy table. Despite the busy hour, the staff was always friendly and felt unstressed. Great experience, again! Kudos.

The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating, and one of the best things about it is the large indoor air-conditioned dining area, which is perfect on hot days. Very nice restaurant with friendly staff. I had never been to a restaurant that serves only brunch before, so I learned something new as well haha. We ordered Porc Shawarma and Burger poulet au za’atar since it was already lunchtime, and those seemed like the only options that could replace a meal we would normally eat for lunch. The food is tasty, but a bit more seasoned than I expected and I didn’t like the sauce very much. Everything else was nicely and well prepared. The price–quality ratio is okay. All the best. 🙃

Friendly and great shakshuka. Great prices.... The shakshuka brought me back to a time I was in Barcelona ,I went to a corgi cafe and had an unfortunate experience where the corgi mauled me. He bit my face, I was bleeding profusely. It was because I had an empanada in my bag he wanted. Other that the corgi mauling, I give that cafe in Barcelona 5 stars and would go back..
Anyways, I am delirious from the Willy bus, but the shakshuka here is great and I recommend you dine in. 🥚

We ordered shaksuka and salmon pancake. Shaksuka was delicious. We preferred the spicy one and it was so good. I ordered salmon pancake and it looked and tasted so nice. If I go there again I will again order it. We waited like 25 minutes to get in. There there is a line usually. Ice tea was not that good. I want order it again. The place is small. Insider Tips for Enjoying Colmar’s Rooftop Scene
Navigating the rooftop culture in a historic city like Colmar requires a bit of local knowledge. The rules of engagement differ slightly from those of a large metropolitan bar scene. To help you blend in seamlessly and secure the best seat in the house, we have compiled a list of practical tips based on the nuances of Alsatian hospitality and the city’s unique climate.
Time Your Visit for the Golden Hour
The magic of Colmar’s rooftops is best experienced during the transition from day to night. Arrive roughly an hour before sunset to secure a prime spot. Not only will you get to watch the sun cast a golden hue over the terracotta roofs, but you will also avoid the late-night rush. Keep in mind that in a town known for its culinary culture, many locals use rooftop bars as a pre-dinner stop, so terraces often peak between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
Dress for the Microclimate
Because Colmar sits in a relatively dry pocket of France, summer days can be surprisingly hot while evenings cool down quickly. However, the real variable is the breeze. Elevated terraces, even just three stories up, are more exposed to the wind than the sheltered, narrow streets of the Old Town. Always bring a light jacket or shawl, even in July, to ensure you are comfortable enough to stay for that second glass of Riesling.
Embrace the Local Pour
While most rooftop bars in France pride themselves on mixology, Colmar is the capital of the Alsace wine region. The true local experience is to order a glass of Crémant d’Alsace (the local sparkling wine) or a Grand Cru white wine. Not only is this often the most affordable option on the menu, but it also pairs perfectly with the warm summer air and the view of the vine-covered foothills in the distance.
Check for Weather Closures
Unlike indoor bars, rooftop terraces in Colmar are entirely at the mercy of the elements. A sudden summer thunderstorm rolling over the Vosges mountains can close a terrace within minutes. If the forecast looks uncertain, call ahead to confirm that the outdoor space is open. Many venues are quick to update their social media stories regarding terrace availability, so a quick check before you walk over can save you a wasted trip.
Look Beyond the Main Square
While the areas around Place de la Cathédrale and Little Venice are beautiful, they are also the most crowded. Some of the most rewarding rooftop experiences are found slightly off the beaten path, attached to modern hotels on the edge of the historic center. These often provide the most unobstructed views of the city skyline because they are not looking from the center, but at it.
Exploring Colmar from above offers a completely different perspective on this Alsatian gem. The gentle hum of the streets fades away, replaced by the clinking of glasses and the sight of storks nesting on distant chimneys. It is a serene, almost romantic experience that grounds you in the beauty of the region.
By choosing to elevate your evening, you are treating yourself to more than just a drink; you are gaining a view into the architectural soul of the city. As you plan your itinerary, be sure to leave room for a leisurely hour or two above the cobblestones—it is an essential part of the Colmar experience that you will not want to miss.
