12 Best Bakeries in Colmar

There is a particular magic to walking through the cobblestone lanes of Colmar with a paper bag warm in your hand. The air in this Alsatian town often smells of butter, cinnamon, and toasted almonds, blending seamlessly with the timber-framed facades and the gentle flow of the Lauch river. For locals and travelers alike, the bakery is not just a place to buy bread; it is the heartbeat of the neighborhood, a daily ritual that marks the rhythm of life.

Colmar’s baking heritage is a beautiful collision of French finesse and Germanic heartiness. Here, you will find the delicate layers of a perfectly laminated croissant sitting next to a dense, chewy pretzel or a slice of kugelhopf. This unique duality means the standard for flour, fermentation, and flavor is exceptionally high, and mediocrity is rarely tolerated by the discerning residents.

Seeking out the best bakeries here is an adventure in sensory delight. It is about watching bakers dust clouds of flour over shaggy dough in the early morning hours, and it is about the satisfying crackle of a crusty baguette being squeezed. Whether you are looking for a quick breakfast, a hearty loaf for a picnic in the vineyards, or a decadent seasonal tart, the city offers an embarrassment of riches.

However, with so many glowing windows displaying glazed fruits and golden crusts, choosing where to spend your euros can be overwhelming. You might find yourself wandering from the Rue des Marchands to the Quartier des Tanneurs, lured by the scent of fresh yeast. To truly eat well in Colmar, you need to know which artisans are committed to long fermentation, high-quality butter, and traditional recipes passed down through generations.

We have walked the streets, sampled the sourdough, and tested the flakiness of the viennoiseries to bring you the definitive guide to the city’s finest flour dusters. From historic institutions that have fired their ovens for centuries to modern artisans pushing the boundaries of organic grains, this curated list ensures you spend your time eating only the best.

Without further ado, here are the establishments that define the crumb and crust of this beautiful Alsatian capital.

This patisserie is an absolute gem for anyone with a sweet tooth. The atmosphere is wonderful, especially with the charming outdoor seating that makes it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a treat. Their variety is truly impressive—everything from delicate macarons and beautifully crafted cakes to fresh baked goods, rich pralines, and excellent coffee. There’s really something for everyone. What stood out most was the quality of the desserts. Everything we tried was perfectly balanced—not overly sweet, but full of flavor and clearly made with great care. You can really taste the craftsmanship in every bite. On top of that, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We had an amazing time and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

Visited because my Husband was craving a cake to takeaway. I wasn't hungry so I had nothing personally but I regretted it. I tasted the Mont Blanc my Husband had and it was so delicious. Honestly so many cakes looked delicious so it was hard making a choice. Would come back again next time to try more things and maybe have a goûter inside because I noticed they have some tables.

I tried a range of products during my 4 week stay in Colmar, such as tart/tartelette, mille feuilles, Paris-Brest, torche aux marrons, éclair, beignet, croissant, quiche, pizza... My host recommended this place for the galette des rois, and indeed, the galette was delicious, fluffy and crispy pastry and light almond paste. The shop was a little far from where I stayed, but I was committed to visiting this shop twice a week. It was always a fun, as the staff were friendly and I saw different products each time. I am leaving Colmar with lots of sweet memories (and extra kilos to lose)😋😄

Wow!! This has to be one of the best bakeries I have visited in Europe! A few minutes walk away from Colmar city center, but the pastries and the assortment of breads is well worth the effort!

This bakery is definitely worth a visit. It is impossible to decide what to eat! We went in the morning and had three different types of croissants with coffee, and they were all delicious. We stopped by again late in the afternoon in Strasbourg to grab some sandwiches. Their prices are also very affordable

A charming boulangerie just on the outskirts of Colmar’s city center, offering a wonderfully authentic local atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can truly experience everyday life in Colmar, away from the more touristy spots. The selection of sweet and savory treats is absolutely delicious, with everything tasting fresh and full of flavor. Definitely a must-visit if you want a genuine taste of the region!

When searching for pastries in Colmar, Boulangerie Maison Alexandre kept coming up. Although we were in a hurry to get to the train station, we woke up 30 minutes early just so we could stop here for some pastries on the way! I am so glad we did, because this place bakes a mean croissant and a tasty baguette (among other things). It was about a 15 minute leisurely stroll (with luggage) from our hotel in the heart of town to the bakery. When we arrived, there was a long line as well as large groups of people outside. This, as most foodie travelers have ingrained in their very being, is a terrific sign that THIS is a place you want to stop. And it is! The boulangerie has tons of awards and medals that they proudly display as bragging rights. They've won a multitude of "best of," and I can say they are all well deserved. Pastries are sort of the national food of France. Note that, this being France, the staff certainly didn't have the patience to deal with stupid American tourists. They were, as you'd expect, quite aloof if not downright rude. The workers refused to take larger bills once they saw that we had smaller ones, and they were trying to shortchange other patrons left and right. Luckily I was aware (and tried to speak some French, which went a LONG way), and they didn't pull any shenanigans with me. I purchased a baguette and a croissant to take on the train for a snack. As a bread lover and carb addict, I couldn't wait to dig into the baguette and started munching on it as soon as I stepped outside the store. It was absolutely perfect in texture, density, and salty, yeasty flavor. The croissant was even better. I had asked for a plain croissant, but they gave me one that was dusted with powered sugar and slivered almonds. It was sweet and yummy and while not an item I'd normally order, it was buttery, flaky, and delicate. This is a bakery that's worth a detour and your time, especially if you are seeking authentic, delicious French pastries. Highly recommended!
Joni Ramirez★★★★★
We were looking for a boulangerie in Colmar that was open early before our train to our next stop, and Maison Alexandre was one of the only open. Others must have had the same idea, since there was a line out the door. It moved quickly though. These were some of the first croissants we had in France — and they set the bar high. We got the plain croissant, a chocolate croissant and some sort of fruity pastry, along with some juice. They were all super flaky, and we never came across the criss cross pattern one with fruit again in Lyon or Nice. Highly recommend for a train snack at whatever time you’re leaving.
Jessica Pike★★★★★
The croissants are amazing!! We had the pistachio and almond one and were both amazing! Walked to the river to enjoy them. Worth the wait in the queue

I will miss going every morning to get one of the best traditional baguettes I tasted in France. The staff was always welcoming and provided excellent customer service. I appreciate the invitation to go bake some bread at 2 am and I am sorry I couldn’t take it at the time. Maybe next time I am in town. 😊

So so good, I arrived morning early and I was searching for a place for a breakfast at 07:00 and it didn't disappoint, so delicious coffee quiche and croissants as well, I highly recommended it
Blvck★★★☆☆
The croissant looks dark brown but isn’t appealing. The chocolate inside is too hard and doesn’t melt, which is disappointing. Flavor is okay, but overall it doesn’t live up to expectations for €1.55.

Firstly, I wanna admit that, one of the workers was really nice and helpful. Unfortunately I forgot her name, but in whole Colmar, she was the only worker who able to speak good English and explaining every desserts that were new for us. We end up ordering “Bombe Glacee” (ice cream cake). Was expensive, but even we were 4 persons, it were enough for all of us. Only disadvantages price and extra payment if u eat inside, but relatively to other places, kinda okey

I had a delicious french breakfast inside the patisserie with baguette, butter, cheeses, and fresh orange juice. 🍊 Super friendly staff, although they did not speak English very well.

The best pastries ever! We had an amazing local cheese and ham tart and chocolate hazelnut thing. There seems to be no where to sit in to eat, but they recommend getting a drink at the James’on bar around the corner and you can eat there (although I think there are nicer places to get a drink in Colmar)
Louisa Moore★★★☆☆
This place seems like more hype than quality, but I fell for the marketing and waited in a long line to get inside to see what was on offer. I went towards the end of the evening near closing time, so the cookies and pastries had already been picked over quite a bit. Luckily, I was here to get a gingerbread man, and I picked out the cutest one ever (see photos)! I've rarely met a gingerbread I didn't like, and this version was a-okay. It wasn't as spicy as I'd like, but it had a nice chewy crunch to the cookie that made the texture quite satisfying. Of course, as is my method, I nibbled off his arms and legs first. I'm not such a fan of the icing, and Gilg's version I found quite bland. It was sweet, but not tasty. My cookie was individually wrapped in plastic which made it easy to reseal to enjoy later. I was able to take a few more nibbles on my train to Paris the next afternoon. And did I mention how stinking cute the cookie was? The little wide eyes and "o" face...just adorable. I could see these making excellent gifts to take home from Europe, if you could keep the cookies from breaking during transit. The other goods on offer looked tasty, but if the gingerbread man is any indication, this may be one of those "all looks, bland taste" type of bakeries. I wish I had tried something else, but my main reason to visit was merely "just okay."
Cem’s★★★★☆
We visited Gilg in Colmar after trusting the reviews to try their croissants. There is no seating available, only takeaway. The place smells wonderful, and the products look high quality and appealing. We bought a plain and a chocolate croissant around 12:30. Possibly because it was later in the day, they didn’t fully meet our expectations, but overall it was still a pleasant experience.
Julian Köbernick★★★★★
One of the best Patisseries we have ever seen. Perfectly hand crafted tartelettes, taste is amazing. Came back here twice. We can really recommend to buy some tartelettes during your visit in Colmar.

A gem in Colmar, offering some of the most delicious desserts in town. The croissants are perfectly flaky, the macarons delicate, and the éclairs rich with flavor — exactly what you’d hope for in a French patisserie. Maybe the best bakery in Colmar, The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a lovely stop after exploring the old town. Prices are fair for the quality, and the location on Grand Rue is easy to find. If you love desserts, this place is a must-visit. Every bite feels like a little piece of France at its best.

This apricot tart was the most delicious dessert I've ever had! I'm passionate about pastry and I know a lot about it. It's incredible!!! There's such a range of harmoniously intertwined flavors! The apricots are definitely fresh (they're incredibly delicious here right now), and some herbs or spices delicately complement this harmony. I've never tasted anything like it anywhere. The chef is a great professional and talented!!! The vanilla strawberry dessert was also wonderful. Only the highest quality ingredients were used throughout.

This was a place I'd been planning on visiting Colmar. There were so many cakes to choose from, I had a hard time deciding. I ordered a Mini-Kougelhopf and a Tartelette agrumes. The Mini-Kougelhopf was delicious, thanks to the nuts in it. A bite of the Tartelette agrumes reminded me of the lemon tart I had at Menton. It was so refreshing and very good. I arrived a little after opening time, but the cafe was barely crowded. But soon, people started pouring in, and every seat, except for reserved ones, was full. If you eat in, there's a 1 euro surcharge on top of the cake price. If you need to use the restroom, you can use the restroom at the "La Maison des Têtes" hotel right next to the entrance with your receipt. It was a day trip, so I couldn't stay longer, which was a shame. I definitely want to visit again!

I came here because of the award for best butter croissant in the Haut-Rhin region. So I got a butter croissant and a Bueno croissant. The butter croissant was good, that's true! However, I was very disappointed with the Bueno croissant... where's the Bueno? In my opinion, the value for money is average, given that both croissants I tasted were very light...

I discovered this bakery, and they asked me if I wanted my bread sliced, to which I replied yes. When it came time to pay, I had the exact change ready, and then they asked me for an extra 20 cents on top of the price of the bread (€2.70). It would have been nice to inform the customer that this service was chargeable. A 7.5% surcharge, expensive for a service.

We were wandering around Colmar for our first time. Then we walked by this cute shop. I felt really impressed and satisfied the service, especially the employee named Manon😊 she truly has great service mind. As Asians, we barely see someone who serves customers with hospitality. How to Choose the Best Bakery in Colmar

To make the most of your culinary tour through Colmar, it helps to know what separates a tourist trap from a true artisan workshop. The city is filled with beautiful displays, but the proof is always in the texture and taste. Understanding a few local nuances regarding bread styles and bakery etiquette will elevate your experience from good to unforgettable.

1. Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign

In France, the title "Boulanger" is legally protected. A true bakery must knead, shape, and bake its bread on the premises. If you see the sign "Artisan Boulanger" or "Boulangerie" rather than just a "Depot de Pain," you are guaranteed that the bread was not brought in frozen from an industrial factory. This is the first and most important filter for quality.

2. Distinguish Between Viennoiserie and Patisserie

Colmar excels at both, but they require different skills. A Viennoiserie focuses on breakfast pastries like croissants, pain au chocolat, and brioche, relying heavily on lamination and butter quality. A Patisserie focuses on desserts like tarts, éclairs, and macarons. Some shops do both well, but if you are looking for a specific treat, check what is displayed in the window first.

3. Embrace the Local Breads

While the classic French baguette is available everywhere, you should try the Alsatian staples. Look for a dense, chewy "Pain de Campagne" (country bread) or a bread containing walnuts and bacon. These loaves are designed to pair perfectly with the region’s strong cheeses, cured meats, and hearty stews like Baeckeoffe.

4. Ask About the Flour

The best bakers in Colmar are increasingly obsessed with the provenance of their grain. Many top-tier bakeries now use ancient varieties of wheat or locally milled organic flour (farine bio). Don’t be afraid to ask what type of flour is used in the sourdough; a passionate baker will light up at the question and happily explain their process.

5. Plan for the Early Bird

In France, bakeries operate on a very strict schedule. The best bread is baked early in the morning, and the best viennoiserie often sells out by 10:00 AM. If you want a specific tart or a popular seasonal pastry, go early. Additionally, note that many bakeries close for one or two days a week (often Monday or Tuesday) to rest, so check the hours before you walk across town.

6. Don’t Skip the Savory Section

While tourists often focus on sugar, locals know that the savory options are the true test of a bakery. Look for a "Tarte Flambée" slice, a cheese twist, or a sandwich made on a fresh baguette. These items demonstrate how the bakery handles ingredients beyond sugar and butter, often showcasing their mastery of texture.

As you navigate the enchanting streets of Colmar, let your nose be your guide and your curiosity lead the way. Stopping for a fresh pastry is not just a snack break; it is an act of cultural immersion. Each bite connects you to the generations of Alsatian bakers who have risen before dawn to ensure the city starts its day with something warm, nourishing, and utterly delicious.

Whether you are sitting on a bench in Place de la Cathédrale with a flaky croissant or packing a crusty loaf for a bike ride through the Alsace wine route, the quality of these bakers will undoubtedly be a highlight of your trip. Enjoy the crumb, savor the butter, and take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship that makes Colmar one of the sweetest destinations in France.
