Finding your weekly grocery routine in a new city can be surprisingly difficult. Whether you are looking for authentic French produce, international ingredients, or budget-friendly bulk buying, Lyon offers a diverse retail landscape. The city’s food scene extends far beyond its famous bouchons and Michelin-starred restaurants, rooted deeply in its neighborhood markets and high-quality supermarkets.
From the bustling Presqu’île to the residential hills of Croix-Rousse and the modern districts of Part-Dieu, grocery shopping habits vary widely. Some shoppers prioritize organic labels and local sourcing, while others need late-night convenience or a vast selection of global brands. Understanding the strengths of each chain and independent store will save you both time and money.
This guide focuses on the most reliable and popular supermarkets that residents of Lyon rely on daily. We have evaluated these stores based on product freshness, price positioning, store cleanliness, and the availability of local Lyonnais specialties. Whether you are an expat looking for comfort food or a local seeking the best charcuterie counter, this list has you covered.
The French supermarket experience often includes a strong emphasis on cheese, wine, and bakery sections. However, the rise of organic specialists and international grocers has diversified the landscape. Knowing which store to visit for a specific item—like a specific Asian sauce or a gluten-free baguette—can significantly improve your quality of life in the city.
Below, you will find a curated selection of the best options across the metropolitan area. We have included large hypermarkets for weekly stock-ups as well as smaller urban formats for quick daily stops. Each entry highlights what makes that particular supermarket stand out in the competitive Lyon market.

I had a really upsetting experience at this Carrefour today. I’ve used this store many times because of the convenience and have never had an issue before, but this was my first time using the self-checkout. I was clearly struggling to understand how it worked because of the language barrier. An employee came over, scanned something quickly, walked away, and then laughed with another worker while watching me continue to struggle. I even heard comments in French about how “it’s not hard.”
I understand I’m an English speaker in France, and I truly try to be respectful and figure things out. But being laughed at while I was already confused and embarrassed felt really humiliating. A little patience and kindness would have gone a long way.
I’m sharing this because no one should feel mocked while simply trying to check out their groceries.

They had what I needed, the staff was very helpful and quick to help, but I was informed that I needed to informed one of the staff by the door entrance when I bring my own water in the store so they don't think I steal it.

Huge Carrefour located inside the mall.
It has two floors. The lower ground floor has appliances and many more stuff.
The first floor is the supermarket itself, dedicated on food. They sell good produce and have a few booths inside the store. Each one is focused on different cuisines. From Sushi to Thai and own bakery.

3 cashiers available 1 for card members, 1 for disabled/elderly, 1 for everyone else, the self-serve line goes all the way to the baked goods section. It's a disgraceful establishment, who does not care for its customers, I do not have 30 minutes to wait in line for groceries checkout. Do better. But it seems over the years the owner does not care. As long as the profits are there. You should be ashamed of your store.
Adam Aitken★★☆☆☆
Very long waits at the cashiers due to understaffing and problems wth technology. A lot of the self-serve machines don't work well. Although the produce is very good, the service needs to be upgraded.

We stopped by here to pick up groceries, and it was a good experience. Everything was laid out well, and what we bought was fresh and good quality. The checkout process was easy to navigate, and it was nice to have something larger than a small convenience store with so many options. A very handy place to have nearby if you're visiting the area as a tourist.

Was very happy with the store and 3 of 4 items I bought. However I also bought some strawberries and when I got back to my room I noticed over half of them were not nice/mushy and poor flavour.
UnDiplomatic Wife★☆☆☆☆
Worse self check out experience ever. We just came from the museum nearby and on our way to our car we decided to drop by Carrefour to grab some pastries so that we weren't hangry on the way back home with the kids.
We wasted 30mins in the self check out line because they expect use to take all the pastries out of the bag and only return them one by one after manually inputting the price. If you have 7 pastries and only a few hands, it is not possible. We had to call the lady for each pastry. And she kept disappoearing. At one point she wasn't even around.
Anyway this whole self check in system of placing each pastry in the bag after manual inputting on a system that is not sanitized after each person uses it in not only impossible but also unhygienic.
The funny thing is that this is their updated system. There is zero trust in the customer here. What would have been 5min in a Lidl self check out counter, took 30mins in Carrefours updated system. It's that bad.
The self check out system is meant to speed up the process, instead many customers kept calling the single lady who was helping everyone out. I feel bad for her coz it's not her fault.
I only recommend go to the cashier if you don't want to take long in the shop.

Good selection of items, but despite the convenience of the superstore for me unfortunately I am going to do my groceries shopping elsewhere. The shop has many sanitary issues. The patisserie is swarming with flies as is the “fresh fruit and vegetables” which is often rotten, and there is often a foul smell amongst many of the fridge aisles. Many of the shelves are unclean and badly kept. No one should spend money on such lack of quality.

I didn't want to leave a written review to let Auchan do their own evaluation of the store. But since they've replied, I'll say that this is the worst Auchan I've ever visited. The only positive about the store are the employees working at the self check-out.

I used the Keynest service at this Vival (it worked perfectly, no problems at all).
However, when I dropped off the keys in the middle of the morning, I specifically asked the clerk about the store's opening hours, as I knew I'd be coming back to pick them up around 5 or 6 a.m. a few days later. He clearly told me they were open 24/7. So, perfect!
I arrived at the store this Saturday morning, around 6 a.m., and to my surprise, it opened at 8 a.m.!
It's ridiculous to give customers incorrect information. If I had known, I would have left my keys somewhere else; I ended up waiting around Lyon for two hours for it to open.
Please provide customers with accurate information to avoid this kind of inconvenient situation.

I know more than 100 hundred Lidls between the Baltic countries and Greece.
In more than 40-50 cities. But this Lidl ist the most horrible I have ever seen.
Because it is next to my Airbnb apartment, I go there nearly every day. Always there a lot of basic products missing. First time I thought there is a big strike in France, because the selbes were so empty. But nie I realize it looks every day like this, no matter what time I go there.
One day I saw the manager shouting in front if all customers at a man at the cashier that asked if he could pay part of the products cash, and part with card. She was shouting for minutes to that customer, humiliating him so badly. I told him not to listen to that unprofessional rude woman, that in my opinion doesn't deserve to be manager for a really good German brand.
But what was more shocking, that they sold last week chocolate for a lower price. And all 5 tablets I bought were rotten.
One was so bad, that I brought it back. But they denied to change it, because I didn't keep the receive for a whole week. Who does that?
I informed the German investment group Dchwarz, which owns all Lidls in Europe. And they agreed that all I told them about that bad Lidl is unacceptable. And they will contact Lidl France. I think without getting a message from the head office in Germany, Lidl France doesn't care about customer complaints. Especially when they are written in English.
I recommend to walk 500 meters further to go to Aldi. It is much more professional, cleaner, better organized and friendlier

I'm an Aussie with great experiences with Lidl in the Netherlands but this one is a no go. They were so sold out of stock that I had to walk out, then the security claimed I stole something. Next time have better stock management.

I've noticed this with some super markets in Lyon but somehow I never encountered this behavior in Lidl until today. I'm not french but they absolutely did racial profiling and checked my bag at self checkout. I just purchased 1 Chicken for €4.5 and showed them the bill and the chicken which was in my very small bag. Yet they checked my entire bag like I was a thief! The security person went through my bag by putting his hand inside and checking my contents. This is unacceptable! What do you even sell that requires this level of security check? It's not a Gucci store for god's sake! The security did not check any one except for me! I don't speak french so I couldn't communicate the emotions that I was feeling there so I gave a stern look and left. You guys really need to understand customer service! If you don't trust your security system you should check everyone's bags! I have never seen a single white person being asked by the security to show their bills and we get treated this way for no reason! I have been a regular at this store since I live near it but you just lost a loyal customer. I will go out of my way to not shop from your store moving forward.
Mena Wassef★☆☆☆☆
Lidl in France is a joke compared to the ones in Germany. A cashier young lady who seems to have a bad day or some sort of stupidity at the check out requested to see what's inside my backpack. I opened it and she said okay thanks. She did this only to me. In successive 6 days no other cashier did this with any customer as I am a tourist and buy my grocery every day in those 6 days.
In general employees and especially cashiers are rude in this store.
Consider hiring someone who speaks English as France and Lyon are a top tourist destination and this branch is in the city center and close to the main train station.
Tips for Shopping at Supermarkets in Lyon
Navigating the grocery system in France requires a slightly different approach than in other countries, especially regarding payment, packaging, and timing. By understanding local etiquette and the rhythm of the city, you can avoid long lines and ensure you are getting the best possible value. The following advice will help you shop like a true Lyonnais.
1. Bring Your Own Bags and Weigh Your Produce
Since France phased out free plastic bags, you are expected to bring reusable totes or pay for sturdy bags at the register. In the produce section, you must weigh your fruits and vegetables yourself using the scales provided. Look for the picture of the item on the scale screen, print the sticker, and attach it to the bag before heading to checkout.
2. Understand the Difference Between “Drive” and “Halle”
Many large retailers offer a “Drive” service, which is click-and-collect. You order online and pick up at a designated warehouse without leaving your car. Conversely, “Halle” or “Marché” formats within a supermarket refer to a more premium, market-style layout focused on fresh counters. If you value freshness, look for stores with a “Halle” section.
3. Check the “Date Limite de Consommation” (DLC)
French supermarkets are efficient at rotating stock, but discount bins are common near the dairy and meat sections. Check the “best before” dates carefully. If you find items with a very short shelf life, they are often discounted by 30% to 50%. These are perfect for same-day cooking, a common practice among budget-conscious locals.
4. Don’t Skip the “Bio” (Organic) Aisles
Even standard mainstream supermarkets in Lyon have extensive organic (Bio) sections. Often, the store-brand organic lines offer better quality than name brands at a lower price. If you are looking for specialty items like oat milk or alternative flours, check the Bio aisle before visiting a specialized organic store, as the prices are usually more competitive.
5. Be Prepared for the Lunchtime Rush and Sunday Closures
Most supermarkets in the city center are packed between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM as office workers buy lunch. If you are doing a large shop, avoid this window. Additionally, while laws have relaxed, many smaller urban stores still close on Sunday afternoons or Mondays. Plan your weekly shop accordingly, relying on “epiceries” or designated Sunday-open stores if you run out of essentials.
The key to enjoying Lyon’s food culture is knowing that the supermarket is often just the starting point. While these stores provide excellent staples, the city’s outdoor markets—such as those along the Saône or in Croix-Rousse—should complement your routine. Combining a trip to a major hypermarket with a visit to a local vendor ensures you get both the best prices and the best flavor.
Ultimately, the best supermarket for you depends on your specific neighborhood and dietary needs. We recommend trying a few different options from this list to find the one that feels most convenient for your daily rhythm. With a little local knowledge, you will find that grocery shopping in Lyon can be a genuinely pleasant and delicious experience.
