Lyon might sit hours from the nearest coastline, but its sushi culture is fiercely competitive and impressively refined. The city’s historic role as France’s gastronomic capital extends beyond traditional bouchons, influencing a generation of chefs who demand precision, freshness, and artistry from every plate.
As a result, the sushi scene here often rivals what you would find in Paris, with a distinct emphasis on high-quality rice, ethically sourced fish, and intimate dining experiences. Navigating the sheer volume of Japanese restaurants in Lyon can be overwhelming, especially when the quality varies dramatically from street to street.
While some spots rely on frozen fish and heavy sauces, others are dedicated to the true craft of sushi, aging their fish and importing specialty ingredients directly from Japan. For locals and visitors alike, understanding this landscape is key to avoiding tourist traps and discovering the true masters of the craft.
The best sushi experiences in Lyon are rarely found in flashy, high-turnover establishments. Instead, they are often tucked away on quiet side streets in neighborhoods like the 6th arrondissement, the Presqu’île, or near Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, where access to premium produce is a daily priority.
These hidden gems focus on omakase-style menus, seasonal fish selections, and a respect for traditional Japanese techniques that elevate them far above standard takeaway fare. When evaluating a sushi spot in Lyon, several factors come into play: the quality and temperature of the rice, the knife skills of the itamae, the sourcing of the fish, and the overall atmosphere.
A truly great sushi meal is about balance—the subtle acidity of the vinegar, the warmth of the rice against the coolness of the fish, and the restraint shown in garnishing. These details separate a memorable meal from a forgettable one.
For those willing to explore, Lyon offers everything from Michelin-starred Japanese counters to humble family-run eateries where the focus is purely on the freshest daily catch. Whether you are looking for a quick, high-quality lunch set or a lengthy, contemplative dinner, there is a spot in this city that fits the bill. The key is knowing where to look and what to order once you are seated.
Below, we have curated a list of the 15 best sushi spots in Lyon, taking into account not only the quality of the fish but also the overall experience, value, and consistency. This guide is designed to help you find exactly what you are craving, whether it is a classic nigiri selection or a modern fusion roll.

Plant-based sushi par excellence! I was really impressed with the quality and variety of Bloom Sushi’s creations. The edamame and gyoza were also fantastic. Highly recommended for dessert: mango sticky rice … their version of it! The ambience is beautiful too. A highly memorable foodie evening!

This place is amazingggg! We were gonna go here in Paris, but ran out of time and ended up going twice in our 2 day trip! All vegan and the quality of sushi is just amazing and it tastes sooo good. We recommend the gyoza, curry katsu, dragon eyes and nasu miso flambée. So good! The service is amazing and they are super nice. Wide variety and not too expensive. Have to go here

Absolute perfection!
The restaurant was completely full, the waiters were running the entire night. Yet remained efficient, and attentive.
The food, unreal! How lucky to have a place that puts so much thought into creating such beautiful flavour combinations.
Zero faults. Highly recommend to everyone thinking about going!

We enjoyed the food! First time having vegetarian sushi and it tastes great! Lovely team, very welcoming in a comfortable pretty space.

Not embarrassed to admit that we ate here every single day of our stay in Lyon.
This place was a true delight, and the menu reflected that. I cannot recommend enough the menu double where you can try every roll.
It'd be impossible to choose which one is best, but the kimbap and tuna bliss come to mind.
The owner was lovely and we were happy to be some of the first customers their first month open.
Wishing them continued success, don't hesitate to come here - right now!

The sushi rolls were truly delicious. We were seated right in front of the sushi chefs and could see how focused and meticulous they were in preparing each roll. The staff were also very friendly and attentive. Even though we were almost full, we still ended up ordering another plate! A must-try in Lyon!

Amazing sushi! We actually stopped here twice on our trip since we enjoyed this so much! Great prices for a generous amount of sushi. Very friendly staff - cannot recommend this enough

Such a great spot but food poisoning, at 4 days of sickness. The food all tasted great the service was impeccable, atmosphere so fun. Something I ate there for lunch just before they closed 1st of April has made me incredibly sick.

The food was absolutely delicious, great spacious restaurant with very friendly staff. The service was a little slow but still highly recommend the restaurant.
Aline Gradling★☆☆☆☆
I must start with saying that the service was great. Our waiter was very kind and respectful. However, the food was such a disappointment. The starters were not bad but not good. The duck tasteless, the salmon okey but the wagyu meet, terrible. Don’t order the 45€ ‘steak if wagyu’. No fat, badly cooked and a sad attempt to yakiniku sauce. The meat was well done and when we asked the chef he said that the small pieces in the middle was medium, we send it back. Even tho we told the chef and he agreed it was bad, I still have to pay all that money for a bad meal.
For the price and the expectations it just sad, but maybe we set our expectations to high. Once again, service and ambiance was amazing, thank you. The food and kitchen … hope you will improve.
Kun★★★★★
It’s very delicious. All plats are well decorated with the interesting vegetables, serving with flavorful. Wagyu is excellent. Plus, the service is great, staff is very polite and kind.

Ordered the seasonal ramen: quite good. Ramen on the firmer side, although I don't understand why they stuck together so much. The omelet, seasoned egg, and chicken were wonderful. Mushrooms were a bit tasteless, although good texture. Seaweed flavourful. Broth of the positive note, this being outside Nippon. Overall an enjoyable pick.
Kwang Sujinno★★★★★
The food was great and fresh. All ingredients were good quality. The dishes were delicious and the service was excellent. However, there were a lot of flies. I think they are fruit flies. It's good that you have lids to cover the food, but not all dishes were covered.

This was one of the best sushi meals I have ever had outside of Japan. The quality and flavour combinations were perfect. Also, there was a fried sushi that I was a little concerned about tasting greasy however, it was done perfectly and the flavours of the ingredients came through without being overpowered. I would highly recommend this place if you want some amazing sushi. I would recommend having a reservation as the place is fairly small and gets busy.
Puteri Corputty★★★★★
Been there several times. I love everything about it, food is amazing, service is lovely. Definitely worth it!
Jeremy Snyder★☆☆☆☆
I hate leaving negative reviews. In fact, I think this might be my first.
I went with my sister and we placed an order and asked for water, and they snuck in an up-charged Voss sparkling water. I can't tolerate sparkling water and I'm not a tourist target. I'm a local.
The owner brought back another Voss bottle which I thought was another up-charge action, so I stopped him before he opened it. Instead of calmly staying that he just reused the bottless for tap water, the owner started screaming at us. I paid for the drinks we did have and left.
I feel bad for the employees that work for a guy like this because if he treats a customer this way I can't imagine how he treats people he has power over. The owner is one of the biggest jerks I've met in France.
This guy doesn't deserve your business and his employees deserve far better.
John Vass (John7vass)★☆☆☆☆
Worst place, not good food, we vomited after the food. The place was really nothing special. Avoid the Wakame salad
• Edit on the original review after restaurant's response
Thank's a lot for taking the time to answer even if it was automated 👀
First of all the restaurant was far from full we were the third table and it showed cause the space inside the restaurant was big ... and empty.
Secondly, how where we supposed to inform you that we had trouble after the food and vomited ? You know the human organism needs time to get food poisoning it is not spontaneous as your responses.
Next time try to be more professional and actually care and consider about the quality of the served food. And a llitle more creativity on the dishes doesnt hurt anyone.😘
Miled Nakhel★★★★☆
Good sushi overall, but not exceptional. Quality is solid and the experience is pleasant, just not particularly memorable.
Service was friendly and welcoming, and prices are reasonable for the Hôtel de Ville area, which is a plus.
A good option in the area if you’re looking for something reliable.

love it! got the vegetarian ramen and the broth was so rich and flavorful, almost like meat-based bone broth 😵💫 the textures and flavors blended in really well - the seared oyster mushroom slices are chewy and smokey, woodear mushroom slices are crunchy yet spinach are soft, spring onion for the freshness and seaweed for the umami. and corns!!! (i love corns) the services was pretty quick even during busy lunchtime, and staffs were super helpful and considerate. def recommend

We went on a Friday evening without a reservation. The place was packed, but we still managed to get a table upstairs. The food was delicious. We took the menu for 16,50€, which included gyoza, ramen and a mochi or coffee. The food arrived quickly and the service was very friendly.
Tal Klein★★★☆☆
Disappointed.
Don’t understand the 4.9 rating.
Took an hour to get the main dish, since the moment we ordered.
Gyozas were good.
Ramens were below average.
Not spicy nor flavorful.
We asked for a chilly oil to add a bit of spice, but wow it was like ketchup.
Nichole Chen★★★★★
Very very good ramen. The best noodles I’ve ever tried in Europe and the best price value for a bowl of ramen. Really recommend.
Owen H★★★☆☆
I was disappointed because it says "authentic Japanese restaurant" here but it's Chinese run and I can taste the influence. Overall, the ramen was average. The broth was ok, the meat was a bit dry and had a flavour that was weird but inoffensive. Overall, just average. Service was very pleasant.

Had an amazing dining experience here! The presentation of the dishes was beautiful, and everything tasted just as good as it looked. The sushi was incredibly fresh, with creative combinations and perfectly balanced flavors. I especially loved the rolls topped with sauces and crunchy nuts—they added such a unique twist.
The tacos were also a highlight—crispy, flavorful, and packed with fresh ingredients, paired perfectly with creamy guacamole and a hint of lime. Every bite felt thoughtfully prepared.
The atmosphere was cozy and stylish, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Service was friendly and attentive as well.
Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for delicious food with a creative touch. Will definitely be coming back!
Sebai Mansour★☆☆☆☆
Two stars because the salmon tacos are good. Came from their branch in Aneecy where it was probably the best sushi i ate. Though coming to the Lyon branch, far from it. the fish did not look fresh, some of the items didnt look anything like the pictures in the menu (like the crispy salmon in the picture, barely any salmon on top. The sashimi is tiny compared to the menu pictures, and the salmon on the nigiri is cut so thin you can barely taste it). Worst of all is the cleanliness, my cup had dry food on it from the last person, and the water jug had water stains on it, both times i went. The Aneecy people need to train Lyon chefs how its done.

Good food. The AC was struggling ti cool the place but everything was tasty.

The welcome and service at the restaurant were quite satisfactory. The dishes, a nice blend of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, were delicious. We tried sushi, gyoza, tempura, yakitori, and classic rolls, and all were tasty. We finished with mochi. I recommend it.

Very nice food and I can’t agree with those complaining about the portions.
We took the sushi boat with the wide selection for two and it was more than enough, I didn’t even eat any of the rice.
The other dishes I saw around me were also big portions.
I sure recommend coming here.
Seeing the number of drivers coming for take away, the place is popular.

We didn't expect to have such good quality food. Service with a smile lovely people working there all smiling. Fast service super fresh even at 10pm.
The area mmm you know wasn't a pleasant walk to the restaurant, but sitting outside was a very good feeling. I noticed lots of take aways so lots of turn over I assume.
Will surely go again.

Such a great hidden gem for some of the freshest sushi in Lyon! This cosy restaurant and tea shop offers delicious fish, sushi, and mouthwatering desserts. I tried the miso soup, chirashi miroku, and mix nigiri. They all were amazing. The restaurant is a little bit small. The tables are too close to each other. The service is only in French and Japanese.

It’s the best Japanese restaurant I’ve eaten in Lyon. Sashimi is very fresh and good quality. The desserts are very interesting.
One point is that it’s very difficult to get reservations and I came during lunch (peak time), so service is a bit slow.

As soon as we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the owners. The sushi’s were very very good and we had a great overall experience!
I strongly recommend this cosy sushi place in the 6ème.

Love this place! Highly recommend it! Would love to go back again and again. The menu proposes a hugeee selection of nigiris and sushi. I wanted to try everything.
This place has really the spirit of the owners, so lovely and so warm.
It will be your go to if you want to try japenese specials: algue, squid, nattou, salmon eggs.
The ameabi are really nice, interesting to try such shrimps slightly fattier than the usual.
My favorite is the anguille grillées.
The decor is really nice.
Tho the service takes time.
It’s really about spending the night there and taking the time to enjoy the tasty, savory fish.
It’s really good for dates and friendly hangouts.

We went to Kin Khao in Lyon Part-Dieu for dinner and had a nice experience overall. The restaurant has a modern yet cozy feel - warm lighting and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it perfect for a quiet evening with your couple. There was no wait when we arrived, and the place instantly made us hungry.
The food was great from start to finish. We ordered a Miso Soup to warm us up, Spring Rolls and a Pad Thai. Everything tasted fresh and well-balanced. The flavors were bold but not overwhelming. Portions were good, enough to feel satisfied without being too heavy. The presentation was also neat, showing attention to detail.
The staff were friendly and attentive. Service was smooth and relaxed. Prices were fair for the quality.
Overall, this place is a solid choice if you’re in the Part-Dieu area and want tasty Asian food in a comfortable setting.

A superb choice for having sushi and sashimi. The chef knows exactly how to it savory. The team also tries to make sure that you have the whole experience of tastes. The only thing that we found complicated was the electronic version of the menu

We take a menu dégustation, which is very good. Dishes are particularly focused on sushi and fishes. Chef politely explains the way to eat sushi correctly. I love the dessert, matcha roll, it is super good. One of good Japaneses restaurants in Lyon.

Great experience. We decided to try degustation menu and it was quite nice. Different mix of food from Japanese cuisine, just wish there was more sushi’s in it. Service was good and attentive.

Great sushi and a nice atmosphere at Wasabi Lyon. The fish was fresh and well-prepared, and the Dassai 45 sake was a perfect match—smooth and balanced. Friendly service too. Would definitely come back!

Essential Tips for Enjoying Sushi in Lyon
Understanding a few local customs and practical details can significantly improve your experience when dining out for sushi in Lyon. The city’s dining culture has its own rhythm, and knowing how to navigate reservations, timing, and menu choices will help you get the most out of your meal. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you book a table.
1. Book Ahead for Dinner Service
The most popular sushi counters in Lyon are often small, seating fewer than twenty guests at a time. Because of this limited capacity, walk-ins are frequently turned away, especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Calling a day or two in advance is highly recommended if you have your heart set on a specific spot.
2. Embrace the Lunch Menu
If you want to experience high-end sushi without the high-end price tag, visit during lunch service. Many of the city’s top Japanese chefs offer a mid-day set menu, often called a “formule,” that includes miso soup, a selection of nigiri, and maki at a fraction of the dinner cost. It is the best value for quality in Lyon.
3. Pay Attention to the Rice
A common mistake is judging a sushi restaurant solely by the fish. In reality, the rice is the soul of sushi. Look for rice that is served slightly warm or at room temperature, with a delicate balance of vinegar and sugar. If the rice is cold, hard, or overly sweet, the sushi will fail regardless of how fresh the fish is.
4. Ask About the Daily Catch
Many of the best establishments in Lyon feature a hand-written board or a verbal list of daily specials that are not on the standard menu. These selections often include fish flown in from the Rungis market or directly from Japan. Asking your server, “Quel est le poisson du jour?” can unlock the best bites of the evening.
5. Don’t Overdo the Soy Sauce
At a high-quality sushi bar in Lyon, the chef has already seasoned the fish precisely, often with a brush of nikiri soy sauce or a touch of yuzu zest. Dunking the rice side into a pool of soy sauce can ruin the balance and insult the chef’s work. Dip the fish side lightly, or eat the piece as it is served.
6. Understand the Omakase Option
While not every restaurant in Lyon offers it, those that do often require you to sit at the counter. “Omakase” means trusting the chef to serve you the best of what is available that day. It is the best way to experience the chef’s skill, but it is usually more expensive and requires a bit more time, so plan accordingly.
Lyon’s sushi scene is a testament to the city’s broader culinary philosophy: respect the ingredients, master the technique, and never compromise on quality. By choosing one of the spots listed above, you are not just grabbing a quick bite—you are participating in a dining tradition that bridges Japanese precision with French gastronomic standards.
Whether you are a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, taking the time to seek out these masters of sushi will reward you with some of the most memorable meals the city has to offer. From the bustling streets of the Presqu’île to the quieter corners of the 6th arrondissement, the variety and depth of Japanese cuisine in Lyon continue to grow.
So, the next time the craving for raw fish and seasoned rice strikes, skip the generic delivery app and head to one of these exceptional addresses. Your palate will immediately recognize the difference that passion and expertise bring to the plate.
