12 Best Bakeries Near Central Market of Valencia

Finding a genuinely good bakery in Valencia is less about ticking a tourist box and more about understanding the rhythm of the city. The area surrounding the iconic Central Market, or Mercat Central, is not just a hub for fresh produce and seafood; it is also ground zero for some of the city’s most authentic baking traditions. Here, the scent of fresh dough and caramelized sugar spills out onto the narrow streets, competing with the aroma of horchata and orange blossom.

Navigating this historic district requires knowing where the locals go for their daily bread versus where they queue for a special occasion pastry. The neighborhood, known as El Mercat, blends centuries-old techniques with modern artisanal trends. Whether you are looking for a crusty baguette to accompany your market cheeses or a delicate sweet to enjoy with a café con leche, the options are overwhelming.

To truly appreciate the bakeries here, one must understand the Valencian sweet tooth. While croissants are ubiquitous, the real stars are the local specialties. You will encounter fartons designed for dipping, coca de llanda, and the intricate meringue-based creations that define regional celebrations. It is a world where tradition often trumps trends, yet innovation is warmly welcomed.

The proximity to the Central Market means these bakeries have access to some of the finest raw ingredients in the region. Butter, flour, and seasonal fruits are sourced with a level of care that reflects the market’s high standards. This symbiotic relationship between the market vendors and the bakers ensures that what ends up in the display case is often baked just hours before you arrive.

However, the sheer volume of options can be paralyzing for a visitor. Many storefronts look similar from the outside, with gleaming glass counters and stacks of golden bread. The difference lies in the details: the fermentation time of the dough, the quality of the chocolate, or a family recipe that has been guarded for three generations.

This guide aims to cut through the uncertainty. We have walked the streets, tasted the goods, and spoken to the bakers to curate a list that prioritizes quality and authenticity. Whether you are staying in the old town or just visiting for the day, knowing where to stop will elevate your culinary experience of Valencia.

Below, you will find a carefully selected list of establishments that represent the best of the neighborhood. From historic wood-fired ovens to modern patisseries pushing the boundaries of sugar work, these are the spots that define the baking scene near the Central Market.

I’m giving this place 3 stars because, while the quality of the food is undeniably good, the overall experience left me with mixed feelings. The products we tried were genuinely tasty and fresh – I can see why many people praise the bakery for its quality. The atmosphere inside the market is vibrant and charming, and the stall itself has a cozy feel. It’s clearly a popular spot, and with a solid reputation and an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 based on hundreds of reviews, it's obviously doing something right. However, there are two major issues that really bothered me. First, the prices are genuinely too high for what you get. I understand that you're paying for quality and the central location, but it still felt overpriced. Second – and this was the biggest disappointment – we were charged €0.75 for plastic forks and knives. Charging extra for basic disposable cutlery felt completely unnecessary and left a bad taste in our mouths. If you're going to charge for plastic cutlery, you might as well charge for the plate too! It's such a petty extra that it ruins the experience, especially when you're already paying premium prices. Overall, the food itself is tasty and the stall is charming, but the pricing policy and the ridiculous cutlery charge are hard to ignore. Would I come back? Probably not – there are other great options in Mercat Central that offer better value for money.

That was the best croissant I’ve ever had. The staff were friendly, and there was a great selection of delicious pastries. We even went back to the Central Market twice just to get another croissant from this place. I still remember how amazing it tasted!

Mandarina & Cereza are really tasty. You can taste the mandarina and the cereza. And the beautiful Angi recommended us the Limon. Also the Limon is really tasty and. They are not too sweet or anything. Balance taste. Thanks to the beautiful Angi ❤️ You are really gentle and smiling at us.

Oriana was so sweet helping us choose desserts because we wanted them all and it was some of the best desserts I have ever had. The lemon was seriously out of this world with the balance of the sweet mousse with the tart curd. I want all of them! They can have all my money!

Bocadillo and empanada were delicious and fresh. On top of that, the staff is incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. A lovely place for a quick break!

Very good and fresh bakery. Everyday you can find something sweet or salty to take to go. Everything is high quality. We came back a few times a it was top of the top. The service does not speak English but is nice and always tries to get along by showing and smiling. We did not speak Spanish but always could get what we wanted.

Authentic Valencian bakery I stumbled across. They have a few shops in Valencia. Absolutely delicious, very well priced, and the locals shop there. Visited twice during my two days' stay. Do yourself a favour and drop by.

It’s 10/10. Good atmosphere, a lot of different pastries. Friendly people and sooo tasty. And because my bun with chocolate had soooo much chocolate - my bag has the half of it rn 🫠😂

This place is incredible! Stumbled across it on the way to another breakfast place and decided to go back here. So happy I did. The pastries are delicately made and they have interesting offerings that I haven’t seen in other bakeries. They even accommodated my extremely pathetic attempt to speak Spanish when ordering and (PSA to those for whom it really matters) they can speak a little English when needed. Probably gonna go back multiple times.

15 years ago there were countless small bakeries producing excellent bread. I used to go out at 7am to get a fresh loaf. Then things started to change. Petrol stations would have an oven to finish off factory made dough. On this trip to Valencia I have found a few good old school bread makers and none better than Alfonso Martinez. They are opposite the central market so easy enough to find. The bread was just as I remember it: light, crispy, delicious. A baguette here cost €1 and you can get one from carrefour for 45c. But I promise Alfonso’s bread is worth the extra.

We stopped in to grab an empanada or two for lunch and I didn't leave without choosing which empanadas I would eat tomorrow when I returned! We had the chicken and mushroom, mushroom and cheese and onion and cheese and every bite was incredible. Its a small shop with a few bar stools at the back where a few locals were eating when we got there. As were choosing what we would come back for, the kind woman helping us gave us recommendations we couldn't refuse. The almond cookies were really moist in the middle and the sweet potato and pumpkin filled cookies were amazing. We also got a pistachio croissant. We recommend them all!

Stellar traditional Spanish bakery. Very clean and very friendly! We stop there for fresh bread and pastries in the morning. This has become our horno of choice due to the selection, and crispness of the crust on the bread. I have posted their recent hours in the picture below.

One of a kind bakery with a real Spanish heart. I got the tarta de naranja, which I wanted to try, and it melted in my mouth. So good. Definitely come here and treat yourself!

We simply loved this place. The savory pastries were very delicious, and the sweet baked goods were excellent as well. The recommendations from the very friendly staff member were outstanding: the raisin cookie was absolutely delicious, and the tiramisu we took home on his recommendation was a real pleasure to eat just now. Thank you very much for that!

Absolutely delicious croissants 😋. We took 3 different kind and they all were super tasty. I gave 4 stars because we could not sit there and enjoy them inside with coffee. They only do "take away". It would be wonderful to enjoy the place because it's beautiful inside with those delicious desserts around you. Hopefully next time we are in Valencia ❤️ they will have a spot with sitting.

If you're in Valencia, Sukar pastry shop is an absolute must-visit! Their desserts are not only delicious but also incredibly creative, featuring stunning presentations that elevate each treat into a work of art. Each bite feels like opening Pandora’s box, revealing a delightful blend of unique ingredients and flavors. Remarkably, they manage to strike the perfect balance by keeping the sweetness in check, making these desserts indulgent yet enjoyable without being overwhelming. During my six-day stay in Valencia, I couldn’t resist making a daily pilgrimage to Sukar. I often found myself trying two desserts at a time because they were simply that good. Every visit was a highlight of my day, and I genuinely looked forward to experiencing their latest creations. I highly recommend Sukar to anyone with a sweet tooth—it's worth savoring every calorie! You won’t be disappointed. -
Craig Skeldon★★★★★
Incredible aroma when you walk through, pastries are a little higher in price than other places within Valencia - however, you pay for what you get which was the freshest and most delightful cakes and pastries.
Andzej★★★★☆
We tried three pastries: a pistachio bun, a brownie bun, and a tiramisu bun. The pistachio bun was the best — very tasty with a strong pistachio flavor, but not overly sweet. The brownie bun was a bit strange. There was an actual piece of brownie inside, which made the texture heavy and dense. It felt like having a dessert inside another dessert. A brownie-flavored filling would probably work better than putting a full brownie inside the bun. The tiramisu bun was good, but nothing special — I wouldn’t order it again. Overall, the bakery was a bit disappointing. I expected something more refined and balanced. The pastries feel designed more for social media — lots of fillings and dramatic visuals — rather than elegance and flavor. Another surprising thing is that, despite the premium prices (€5–€7 per pastry), there’s no place to sit and enjoy them with a coffee — both locations are basically takeaway only, which feels a bit odd for a bakery at this price level. For comparison, if Hoffmann in Barcelona is a 10, this place would be around a 6 for me.
Danko Loncar★★★★★
This pastry shop is seriously amazing! They have such a great variety of beautifully crafted pastries. Sukar is all about these huge filled croissants that are to die for. It's in the Old Town and they have some seriously delicious treats like tiramisu croissants, pistachio-covered doughnuts, and even peanut and salted caramel cruffins. If you don't want to wait forever, make sure to get there early. And let me tell you, the almond croissant will blow your mind! 😋

I didn't find patisseries and bakeries to be Spain's strong point (to put it mildly), but if you must go to one, make it this one - the least bad by far of the many I tried. Some of the things were even... sort of nice. Loved the branding, interior design and the service, which was actively smiley - conspicuously so.

Such a great place! The selection of gluten free items was much wider that expected (though since my celiac disease is not severe, I cannot vouch for how others might react). I highly recommend this cafe for its amazing coffee, fresh pastries, and cozy atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed breakfast or a sweet treat. Don’t miss the desserts! I can’t wait to come back to Valencia and try more of them!
Cinthia H★★★☆☆
I visited Dulce de Leche Café and honestly, it was a disappointment. The place is beautiful and very Instagrammable, and the service was impeccable, but I genuinely don’t understand the hype. We ordered eggs with avocado on toast, and the eggs arrived cold. The presentation looked perfect, but the dish itself lacked warmth, which made it quite underwhelming. The pastries were also nothing special — they didn’t look or taste fresh, which was surprising given the reputation of the place. The coffee was another letdown. It didn’t stand out in any way and definitely didn’t meet expectations for a café that seems so popular. Overall, while the aesthetics and service are great, the food and coffee did not deliver. I wouldn’t recommend it, and I wouldn’t go back. Overrated for sure 😞
Tjaša Prša★★★★★
We loved it here. We went there 2 times and I think we will go at least once more. Good coffee, a lot of breakfast choices and the staff is very nice.
Laurel Ellis★★★★★
Polite and friendly staff, excellent selection of pastries. A very convenient breakfast location to our hotel. This croissant was custard and jam, which wasn’t the cheese and bacon I was expecting down to my poor Spanish. I hit my head on bathroom light which is very low hanging.
Simona Kibartaite★★★★☆
Place for sugar lovers 😀 Many different sweets and coffee. Ordering felt a little bit difficult- no serving at tables, so you have to order at one place, take your order from another 😅 But staff was nice, cake fresh and delicious, coffee good and prices friendly, so if you like desserts- worth to visit.

Exquisite artisan bread with great variety - the rye bread and the cheese focaccia are fantastic - the prices are average for these types or bread and the area where it's located.

Cute little bakery. It is takeaway only, no tables to sit down at. Looks like it is very popular with the locals. As I am only visiting Valencia for the weekend couldnt buy the loaf of sourdough bread which they seem to be famous for. But I enjoyed my freshly baked cardamom bun.

Great tiny bakery and cafe, hidden in a quiet street in the very center of the city. Great variety of freshly baked croissants, pastries, cookies, small sandwiches accompanied by a great coffee. Perfect for takeout

Great bakery in the city center! Super inexpensive and delicious pastries. There are also lunch deals posted outside the shop with different options for each day of the week. The takeaway paella looked great!

Unfortunately this has nothing to do with a French Boulangerie, it’s products are pure Spanish. No almond croissant or proper French pain au chocolate, just basic Spanish Napolitana (very different from a French pain au chocolate). It’s also tiny. That doesn’t mean it’s bad just not really worth going out of your way for IMO.

This is our second time ordering a birthday cake from Passage à Paris. I’d say it’s the best French-style cake in Valencia. We ordered the Mille-feuille, the strawberry fruit tart, and the raspberry fruit tart — all were delicious. I’m usually not a big fan of pastries, but I really love their cream. Highly recommend!

This pastry shop must be one of the best in Spain. We are incredibly fortunate to have them in Valencia. They offer a delectable selection of small cakes, perfect for surprising your guests at any party. They also have exquisite cakes for birthdays and special occasions, as well as large cakes for an indulgent personal treat. And let's not forget their divine French pastries, 🥮 🥐, which will undoubtedly make any day special. A must-visit for anyone exploring the city." These are just minor suggestions, and the original review effectively conveys the writer's enthusiasm for the pastry shop.
Evan★★★★★
This authentic French dessert store primarily caters to take-away service, offering only two small tables for quick in-house indulgence. The owner, a delightful and attentive host, promptly shares detailed product information. We savored a Fraisier, Tarta Limon y Merengue, and Eclair de Pistache, and each dessert was a delightful explosion of flavors, masterfully balanced without veering into excessive sweetness. Alongside, we complemented our treats with refreshing juices, all of which came to a reasonable total of about 15 euros, a testament to the exceptional value for such high-quality offerings. For those in Valencia, this is an absolute must-visit for an authentic taste of French desserts. This recommendation holds true for locals and travelers alike. I'm eagerly anticipating my next visit on my return to Valencia.

I went here because my original destination was packed. I’d forgotten I’d been to cult cafe before and although great offerings, tourist being inconsiderate put me off the place. Gave it a try with my crazy 4 year old and he loved it. Great ambience.

Stumbled across this place on the hunt for dessert…. It just soo happened to be the donut day! (Día de la berlina) apparently the only do this twice a year, one day in June and the 18th of December! I can only talk about the donuts they served, they were all delicious. We’re had Lotus Biscoff, Ferrero Rocher and Oreo! They had so many different flavours, I wish I could have tried more. In terms of the staff, they were a bit chaotic, it was very busy though - however they still had a chat with us as we were paying our bill.

Tips for Choosing the Right Bakery

While having a list of names is helpful, knowing how to navigate the bakery counter like a local will significantly improve your experience. The timing of your visit, the visual cues in the display case, and an understanding of local customs can mean the difference between a mediocre pastry and a transcendent one. Here are a few practical strategies to ensure you get the best bite every time you walk into a bakery in this historic district.

Go Early for Bread, Later for Pastries
The baking schedule in Valencia is precise. If you want the freshest savory bread, arrive when the doors open in the morning. However, many patisseries finish their sweet pastry batches by mid-morning. If you arrive too late in the afternoon, the selection may be picked over; if you arrive too early, the caramelized sugar may not have set yet.

Look for the Wood-Fired Oven
Many of the oldest establishments in the Ciutat Vella still use traditional refractory stone or wood-fired ovens. If you see a hint of soot or a deep, charred base on the bread, you are in the right place. This method imparts a smokiness and crust texture that a modern electric convection oven simply cannot replicate.

Prioritize the Local Specialties
It is tempting to order a standard croissant or a brownie, but you are in Valencia. Ask for items you cannot easily find elsewhere. Look for panquemao (a brioche-like sweet bread), rosquilletas (crunchy breadsticks), or a slice of coca de llanda. These items are the true test of a baker’s skill in this region.

Check the Flow of Foot Traffic
A busy bakery is almost always a fresh bakery. High turnover means the bread hasn’t been sitting in the case for hours. If you see a line of elderly residents buying their daily loaves, that is a stronger endorsement than any online review. Patience in that queue is usually rewarded with a warm product.

Observe the Ingredient Labels
Modern artisan bakeries in Valencia are increasingly transparent about their flour sources and fermentation times. If you see signs mentioning "masa madre" (sourdough) or specific types of high-extraction flour, it indicates a commitment to digestibility and flavor. Don’t be afraid to ask the staff about the fermentation process; they are usually proud to explain it.

Mind the Siesta Hours
While the area around the Central Market is tourist-friendly, many traditional bakeries still close for a few hours in the late afternoon. Plan your bakery run between 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM for the best selection. Evening hours are often reserved for the sale of "bocadillos" or leftover stock, which is rarely the star of the show.

The area surrounding the Central Market is a living museum of Valencian gastronomy. While the architecture and the hustle of the market stalls are captivating, the true soul of the neighborhood is found in the flour-dusted hands of its bakers. Taking the time to step inside one of these establishments is an essential part of understanding the city’s identity.

Whether you leave with a simple loaf of rustic bread or a box of intricate sweets, you are taking home a piece of Valencia’s heritage. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and point to something unfamiliar in the glass case; that is often where the most memorable flavors are hiding.
