Stepping into the maze of stalls inside Valencia’s Mercado Central is a sensory experience that defines the city’s culinary soul. After navigating the vibrant rows of fresh produce, Iberian ham, and glistening seafood, finding a quiet corner to decompress is often necessary. The historic streets surrounding this Modernist landmark are packed with hidden plazas and narrow alleyways where the aroma of freshly ground coffee spills out onto the cobblestones.
The area immediately surrounding the market is not just a tourist thoroughfare; it is the beating heart of the old town, known locally as El Carme and La Seu. Here, the coffee culture is a blend of traditional Spanish barra standing and modern specialty brewing. Whether you need a quick espresso shot to fuel your shopping or a leisurely flat white to rest your feet, the options are varied and deeply rooted in local life.
Finding the right spot involves more than just proximity; it requires knowing whether you want a historic institution or a contemporary minimalist space. Many visitors make the mistake of settling for the first tourist trap with a multilingual menu and inflated prices. To truly experience Valencia like a local, you need to step a few meters away from the main entrance and explore the side streets where quality and atmosphere reign supreme.
We have curated a list based on bean quality, atmosphere, and proximity to the market’s main doors. From roasters who source their beans directly from farms in Colombia to traditional horchaterías that have been serving locals for over a century, this guide covers the full spectrum of caffeine needs. Each recommendation offers a distinct reason to visit, ensuring that your coffee break enhances your market experience rather than detracting from it.
For the discerning traveler, the quality of the milk frothing and the precision of the water temperature are just as important as the historical architecture. Fortunately, Valencia has seen a surge in third-wave coffee shops that take their craft seriously. These baristas are often happy to discuss the origin of their beans, making the stop an educational experience as well as a refreshment break.
Before you dive into the list, remember that Spanish coffee culture differs slightly from other parts of Europe. A café con leche is the standard morning drink, while a cortado is perfect for the afternoon. If you prefer iced drinks, ask for café con hielo to get your espresso served with a glass of ice, a refreshing option during the hot Valencian summers.
To help you navigate the bustling streets with ease, we have organized the top spots to grab a drink within a short walking distance of the market. These are the places where you can rest your shopping bags, watch the world go by, and taste some of the best coffee the city has to offer.

I really love this cafe. The location us fantastic at the Ayuntamiento plaza (city hall). The interior design is amazing - So classy and comfortable. The music is nice as well. The ceiling is high and the colors are light and soft.its very clean from inside. The service is wonderful, and the staff are professional and friendly. The coffee is delicious.
Cherry Blossom Valencia is recommended.

The staff is top shelf. They take care of you. The food is very good, they also have alcohol and wine, it’s the one of my best place. I wish it was open 24 hours a day.

Traveled Spain for 6 weeks and this is the best café con leche I've had in this country. It surprised me - nutty, deep flavor, not too much foam, a good serving of actual coffee, it comes in a bigger cup than most. The atmosphere is bright, the staff is kind.

Cakes were edible, staff not interested in serving you. Blossom tree in centre of cafe lovely. Not memorable.

It’s a very cute place and pet friendly!
Food was good but I ordered pancakes and were small and lacked a bit of flavor. The toppings were good but the pancakes themselves were too small and thin for the price.
Place is very cute and staff super friendly. I was the only one in the place and still took a while so I can’t imagine with more people.

Café de las Horas is one of those places in Valencia that is worth visiting simply for the atmosphere. The interior is wonderfully eclectic, with ornate details, velvet, chandeliers and a slightly theatrical feel that makes it quite different from your average café or bar.
The building itself is located in the historic heart of Valencia, close to the old city centre. The café is housed in a historic setting and has become particularly famous for its connection with Agua de Valencia, the iconic Valencian cocktail made with cava, orange juice, vodka and gin. The drink was created in Valencia in the 1950s and Café de las Horas is one of the places most closely associated with this local classic.
We were lucky enough to arrive at just the right moment and could sit down immediately. Not long afterwards, a queue had already formed outside with people waiting for a table. So if you want to visit, especially at a busy time, be prepared to wait a little.
The service was friendly and welcoming, and the drinks were very good. Of course, trying the famous Agua de Valencia is almost obligatory when visiting... it’s part of what makes this place so recognisable.
Overall, Café de las Horas is a cosy, atmospheric and slightly quirky place that feels like a little escape from the busy streets of Valencia. Definitely worth a visit for the unique interior, friendly service and, naturally, an Agua de Valencia.
Dwight Kenneth★★★★☆
Beautiful baroque interior . Get a seat inside and not outside as half the experience is the decor and interior design. The agua de Valencia is great (every place makes it slight different). Make sure to sample multiple places and always make sure they are using freshly squeezed OJ. The cheese plates and cured meats are very tasty as they are served on whole wheat bread, crackers, dried fruits, and walnuts . A flavor explosion. A little pricier than other places with similar offerings , but it is worth it. For two propyl you should start with a 1/2 liter of Agua de Valencia.
Jorge Valencia★★★★★
The best Agua de Valencia ever! Soft, smooth and dangerously delicious 🍊✨ You barely notice the alcohol… and then suddenly it hits you 😂 Elegant, refreshing and dangerously drinkable.
And can we talk about the olives? Absolutely incredible — served in a delicious pickled marinade with garlic, onions and gherkins. So simple and so good.
The place itself is wonderfully over-the-top: rococo, dramatic, a little eccentric… but incredibly cool. ✨ Definitely one of those spots with personality in Valencia.
Nikita Georgiev★★★★★
One of the most beautiful interiors in Valencia star ceiling, gold mirrors, chandeliers, the whole fantasy. Best Agua de Valencia in town, made with real Valencian oranges. Bonus: you can buy their orange liqueur by the bottle to make it at home (one bottle makes 3L), or grab a 1L take-away bottle of the ready cocktail. Atmosphere and drink both deliver.
Becca★★★★★
We only had drinks, great atmosphere, was busy and buzzing with happy chatting customers when we visited. We don't speak Spanish but were understood and enjoyed the stunning decor and the service and drinks. Agua de Valencia was delicious

If you are looking for a reliable, no-nonsense node to kickstart your day, Mora Caffe is exactly what you need. Located right by the bull arena and the train station, it’s perfectly positioned for anyone needing a functional, efficient morning routine.
Why it works:
• Minimalist Efficiency: This isn’t an over-engineered tourist cafe. It’s a cosy, scaled-down space that gets straight to the point.
• Value Proposition: The coffee and breakfast options—specifically the croissants—are priced exceptionally well. In a city where costs can fluctuate, finding a spot that offers consistent quality without a premium markup is a massive win.
• The Workflow Start: It’s the ideal environment to sit for a moment, hydrate, refuel, and recalibrate before heading into the rest of your day. It’s quiet enough to collect your thoughts but lively enough to feel connected to the city's early-morning rhythm.
Final Verdict: Mora Caffe is a textbook example of a high-utility local spot. It doesn't need to be flashy because it executes the basics perfectly. If you are near the station or the arena and need a clean, affordable, and welcoming start to your morning, this is your primary objective.

THE OG SPOT FOR VALENCIAN HORCHATA! Cool spot to have an horchata and farton (slightly sweet , doughnut like , bread stick). The horchata was just a little too sweet for my liking . But very nice spot and quick service. Their fartons were some of the better ones we had in all of Valencia .
Melissa & Jamie★★★★★
Came to Horchatería de Santa Catalina for churros and they were some of the best we had in Valencia. They were served fresh with a crisp outside and soft centre. The hot chocolate was just right too. It was rich enough to enjoy with the churros without being overly heavy. A big thank you to Naomi who looked after us. She was friendly and made us feel really welcome.
roylan zuriel★★★★☆
Came here as recommended by my tour guide that this place is one of the original horchata places - I personally enjoyed the horchata with the farton and dipping that into the horchata. It wasn’t too sweet which is what I prefer, I even ended up ordering two portions. Service was really quick and you pay as soon as you get your order.
Dario Fiorucci★★★★★
A historic institution in Valencia that is an absolute must-visit. The interior is charming, decorated with traditional ceramics that create a wonderful old-world atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to try authentic, chilled horchata, paired with traditional fartons for dipping. A delightful, classic stop right in the heart of the city.
Hande Demirci★★★☆☆
Honestly, I found it quite overrated. The dough was okay, but the chocolate didn’t have a rich or deep taste and was below average for me. We went because of the hype, but I wouldn’t personally recommend it.
The horchata was also not really for me. I understand it’s a unique and traditional taste, so I don’t think it’s necessarily the place’s fault - I just didn’t enjoy it.

I really enjoyed my visit. The restaurant is located in a lively nightlife area in Valencia, but because it’s set on a spacious square slightly away from the busiest streets, it still has a relaxed atmosphere. The outdoor seating area is beautifully designed and very inviting.
My waiter was exceptionally friendly and attentive. He was always nearby and noticed immediately whenever I needed something. The drink selection is extensive, and the food was excellent. I had the salmon tartare, which was fresh, delicious, and something I would definitely order again.
Prices are a little higher than at some other places in Valencia, but the quality, service, and atmosphere make it absolutely worth it. I would happily return.

It's a great place to enjoy tapas, have some sangria, beers, and spend a relaxing afternoon. The service is friendly.
I highly recommend the torreznos, king prawns are served with an amazing citrus mayonnaise, and the burrata is absolutely incredible.
A perfect spot to enjoy great food and drinks in a pleasant atmosphere 🍻🍤🧀

The burrata salad was so delicious it made me want to dance! I absolutely loved it! The place has a lovely atmosphere, a great location, and friendly staff. We stopped by here during Fallas to take a break. We were only going to have some wine until we read the menu. We had some of the best Patatas Bravas since moving here 1 1/2 years ago, the goat cheese Samosa which was absolutely wonderful and then the duck Samosa that stole the whole meal. The service was great, even though it was very crowded with Fallas. We actually stopped by friends to recommend this restaurant and now we are recommending it to all of you.

We had a late lunch on the last day we were leaving, as well as evening drinks couple of nights before that, the evening atmosphere on Saturday was fantastic. If you happen to be in Valencia and you need a glass of something better, this is a place where you need to stop by. I happened to be passing by when I suddenly heard a lovely piano music, a live piano music. Trust me when I say that a glass of something better with live piano music is truly a peak of all evening activities. Plus the kind staff works quickly and there's rarely a moment when your glass is empty. Cheers to you el Cafetím Valencia and thank you for the memories...

I passed by this cozy little café-bar again and finally stepped inside, drawn in by the soft sound of the piano music. The place is small but charming, with cute vintage decorations n friendly staff. They serve coffee - cocktails and snacks.

The best Agua de Valencia in the city. Highly recommended! 🙂

Here’s my first and probably last post from Valencia that’s not to say there is only one great coffee shop, there are many many many 😁
However I really liked MAYAN … a lovely relaxing business run by a family originally from Guatemala 🇬🇹. Granddad is the boss (quite right too if you ask me 😁) and the rest of the family work hard to make your visit a pleasant one.
Obviously no @cotsaward … this is Europe 😉 … don’t let that put you off just go and enjoy ☕️🍰 😁👍
Oh and COME ON ENGLAND ⚽️🏴⚽️🏴⚽️
Pieke★★★★☆
Nice bar, Mayan themed (as aspected). They had a nice mural to show the coffee chain. The coffee we had (espresso and a cortado) were nice. The espresso was better then the cortado (which was slightly bitter). Very friendly barista. Everything was nice and clean. The only thing that makes a 4-star rating in atmosphere were the notes everywere (don't touch, laptop 30 minute max, you break you buy, etc.) It is probably neccesary but felt a bit negative.

Early in the morning searching for wholesome meal plus cup of coffee. Went onto Google map and came across this cafe.
Had the Guatemala Breakfast + Flat white coffee.
The Guatemala meal comes with scrambled eggs, salted black beans paste, cheese, plantains and bread. It was delicious.
The coffee is simply out of this world, so rich and aromatic, never tasted coffee like this before. Flat white is a must to try !!!

This is my favorite place for coffee and they also have delicious pastries and cheesecakes. I go there often and recommend it to all my friends. The coffee is uniquely delicious, I’ve never tried anything like it anywhere else in the world. The service is very warm and welcoming. Thank you so much!

A truly wonderful place!
The coffee is great, the food is great, the organice juice is great!
Location: 5* - Right next to the Torres Quart
Service: 5* - I wanted to practice my Spanish and they have been very patient and accommodating. The food was prepared very quickly and so were the other drinks.
Decor: Mayan themed (obviously) but it has a real raw and natural feel to it.
Food & Drink: 5* - The Tortilla was amazing. I have had it for the last two days, and will be coming back every morning. The coffee is some of the best I’ve ever had and the orange juice was so good I could have drank litres (thank god they only put it in a medium glass).
Overall, if you’re coming to Valencia, don’t leave until you’ve tried this place. A true gem.

Stopped at FINCA Bar de Barra for an Agua de Valencia and it was one of the nicest I tried while I was there. It was fresh with plenty of orange flavour and really well balanced without being too strong. It was served exactly how you’d expect and made for a great way to cool down in the Valencia heat. The staff were friendly and the service was quick which made the whole experience even better.

Great Agua de Valencia made to order right in front of you so you know you are getting the real thing. It is primarily a spot for take-away cocktails, so best to plan to walk with your drinks. But the drinks are delicious, service is friendly and prices are reasonable as the drinks are large.

A very aesthetic and Instagram-worthy spot! The whole place is beautifully designed, making it perfect for taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere. We ended up taking lots of pictures because every corner looked great.
The Aperol Spritz was well made and refreshing, and the prices were quite reasonable for the location and overall experience. If you're looking for a stylish place to relax with friends, enjoy a drink, and get some great photos for your feed, this is definitely worth a visit.

Wow! Ordered 3 things and every single one was magnificent. My friend had the Acai bowl. It was amazing and served almost like a sorbet which was super refreshing and perfect for a warm day. It was a bit unique, but in all the right ways. The granola was so delicious that we asked if it was available to purchase separately. Sadly it isnt, but the lady I spoke with said "not yet" so we're hopeful that means it will be soon. I ordered the pastrami as it's something I love, but rarely find on a menu here. Loved the sauerkraut and the portion sizes was perfect. My wife had the Breakfast Bun without egg and said she could eat it every day. The service was fantastic and the staff was super friendly. I ordered in my very imperfect Spanish and when I wasn't able to understand everything she said in response, she switched to English which she spoke perfectly. Absolutely delightful experience. We'll be back again for sure!

Quick service, excellent coffee, and a plate that genuinely made me stop mid-conversation.
The smoked salmon and avo situation was already winning, but it’s the details that got me: seed mix scattered across the plate, a drizzle of olive oil that gave everything this lovely, silky texture. Pickled red onions on top because why not. Someone in that kitchen actually cares, and it shows.
Coffee was excellent. Service was warm. No long waits. Just a really solid, beautiful breakfast that reminded me why I bother eating out at all.
Go. Obviously.

Good small coffee shop in the center of Valencia. They only have a few tables inside but usually there is also outdoor seating. I came close to their closing time I guess. Coffee is very good. And the pastries are worth a try. Safe option if you are around.

If you happen to find yourself in the heart of Valencia one morning, just a short walk from City Hall, be sure to stop by Kult Café.

Best brunch spot! Went in straight as it opened, so we didn’t wait in line that long, but the queue starts to get big very early, there are only a few sitting spots. We had the tahini banana bread - delicious! Eggs with toast, and salmon avocado toast - the salmon was so fresh and high quality! They also had speciality coffee and overall, the food had no mistake! We waited for our food for quite a long time and we sat outside, where the atmosphere is not so perfect. The service was slower, but they were very helpful and solved everything!

The owner, Ms Isa was such an amazing lady. This for sure is one of the delicious cafe con leche that I have had in this city. I came back almost couple of days to enjoy her hot cafe. "La belleza está en la mezcla" and they mean it. Mestizo sits tucked into the narrow streets of El Carmen and somehow that setting alone is half the experience. There’s something about squeezing into those tight Valencia alleyways with a flat white in hand that just hits differently.
But the food absolutely holds its own. The Baba Ghanoush tapas were genuinely outstanding: smoky, silky, and clearly made with care rather than thrown together as an afterthought. The banana bread was dense and moist in exactly the right way. And the flat white was proper specialty coffee; not the kind that hides behind a pretty cup. The kombucha rounded it all out perfectly for when you want something refreshing without going full coffee mode.
This is a spot in El Carmen that blends organic specialty coffee, brunch and tapas and the menu pulls from Argentine, European, Middle Eastern and South American influences; which somehow all works beautifully together.
Service was warm and genuinely enthusiastic. The staff’s passion for what they’re doing comes through in every interaction; you feel it immediately. Staff speak Spanish, Italian, English and probably more…
If you’re in Valencia and you haven’t been to Mestizo yet, fix that.

I found Mestizo before arriving in Valencia thanks to the great reviews and its location close to our accommodation. We originally planned to come just once for breakfast, but the first visit was so good that we ended up coming back four times.
It’s a bit hidden, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The staff speaks English, is super friendly, and you can tell they genuinely care about what they do. Great energy and atmosphere overall.
The bagels were generously filled and perfectly balanced. Same with the toasts – and that crispy bread, just top. The espresso was excellent – strong, slightly acidic, nicely roasted, absolutely spot on.
And even though I’m not really into sweets, the cinnamon roll is a must have 👌
What I appreciated the most – and I hope I’m right – was the owner. A distinctive, very friendly Spanish lady, and you can clearly see she truly loves her place and runs it with passion. You could tell by the number of locals coming in every morning.
Definitely a place you should visit when in Valencia – at least for a coffee 🙂🔥

Had the most incredible experience at Mestizo. The staff were wonderful, so warm and attentive, and the atmosphere was perfect with great music and a really relaxed, friendly vibe. The food was honestly the best bagel I’ve ever eaten. Absolutely unforgettable. Highly recommend!
A Life★★★★☆
A disappointing experience. The atmosphere is lovely, but the food and drinks were very average. The matcha was bland and lacked flavor, as if it hadn’t been prepared properly. The hummus bagel also fell apart while I was eating it, and the strong fan by the entrance kept blowing the salad leaves out of it. The plain bagel didn’t complement the filling—a whole-grain or darker bagel would have worked much better.
Another downside was that the menu is available only in a digital format. Unfortunately, it’s clearly designed as an A4 page rather than for a mobile screen, making it difficult to read, scroll, and compare options. A mobile-friendly menu would make the experience much more convenient.
Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the recommendations.

Atmosphere 4, overall 5
The Alfajor cookie (the one with coconut dough and condensed milk filling) was really good - the filling didn’t overpower the taste of the coconut and it was well balanced and soft. The other cookie also had condensed milk filling but the dough was dry and had citrus peel in it. I did not like that one as much
Practical Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near the Market
The environment around the Central Market is fast-paced, especially during the morning rush when locals are doing their daily shopping. Knowing how to navigate the local coffee etiquette will save you time and ensure you get the best possible experience. Here are some essential insights to keep in mind before you order.
- Time Your Visit Strategically: The market and surrounding cafes are busiest between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. If you want a quiet seat or a chance to chat with the barista, arrive early when the shops open or wait until the post-lunch lull around 3:00 PM.
- Stand at the Bar for Local Prices: In many traditional Spanish cafes, there is a price difference between sitting at a table and standing at the bar. If you are just stopping for a quick espresso, do as the locals do and stand at the barra; it is cheaper and often faster.
- Know Your Milk Options: While oat and soy milk are widely available in specialty shops, traditional cafes might only offer whole or semi-skimmed milk. If you have dietary restrictions, look for the terms leche de avena (oat) or leche de soja (soy).
- Pair Coffee with a Local Pastry: A coffee alone is only half the experience. Ask for a fartón (a sweet, elongated pastry) or a croissant de almendra (almond croissant). Many bakeries near the market supply fresh goods daily to the cafes.
- Cash is Still King for Small Purchases: While most modern coffee shops accept cards, some smaller, traditional establishments have a minimum spend for card payments. Keep a few euros in cash handy to avoid friction when buying a single coffee.
The streets surrounding the Central Market offer a microcosm of Valencia’s evolving identity, where centuries-old traditions meet modern artisan trends. Taking the time to sit down with a good cup of coffee here allows you to observe the daily rhythm of the city away from the busy tourist plazas. It is an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the details of the architecture and the warmth of the locals.
Whether you choose a robust single-origin pour-over or a simple, velvety café con leche, the goal is to recharge before continuing your exploration of the old town. Keep this guide handy as you wander, and you will find that the perfect cup of coffee is never more than a few steps away from the market’s beautiful stained-glass windows.
