10 Best Tapas Bars Near Central Market of Valencia

The area surrounding Valencia’s Central Market is a sensory whirlwind of fresh produce, gleaming seafood, and the constant chatter of local commerce. While the Mercado Central itself is a masterpiece of Valencian modernism, the real culinary soul of the neighborhood often lies hidden in the narrow, tiled streets just beyond its walls. Here, among the historic facades of El Carmen and the bustling plazas, you will find some of the most authentic tapas bars in the city.

Valencia is not a city that rushes; it is a city that savors. The concept of tapeo—hopping from bar to bar for a small bite and a glass of wine or beer—is a deeply ingrained social ritual. To eat near the market is to participate in a tradition that bridges the gap between the tourists browsing the stalls and the residents doing their daily shopping.

Unlike the beachfront promenades or the ultra-modern areas of the city, the streets surrounding the Central Market retain a gritty, authentic charm. You are just as likely to be standing next to a third-generation fishmonger as you are a visiting food critic. This mix of clientele demands high quality at fair prices, which is exactly what the best establishments in this zone deliver.

The cuisine here leans heavily on the bounty of the Mediterranean and the nearby huerta (market gardens). Expect to find counters groaning with esgarraet (salted cod and roasted red pepper), glistening anchovies, and the region’s famous cured meats. While paella is best reserved for a sit-down lunch, tapas here focus on the immediate, the fresh, and the deeply flavorful.

Navigating this labyrinth of ceramic tiles and historic stone can be overwhelming, especially when hunger strikes. To help you cut through the noise and avoid the tourist traps that inevitably spring up near landmarks, we have curated a list of the absolute best spots to eat. These are places where the beer is cold, the olive oil is local, and the atmosphere is unmistakably Valencian.

Whether you are looking for a quick bite of a classic bocadillo or a slow afternoon spent grazing on innovative small plates, this guide covers the spectrum. We have focused on venues that prioritize quality ingredients and maintain the soul of Spanish hospitality. You won’t find frozen croquettes or pre-packaged seafood here; only the real deal.

So, loosen your belt, prepare your palate, and get ready to explore the vibrant gastronomic landscape that surrounds one of Europe’s most beautiful markets. Here are the ten best tapas bars you need to visit just steps from the Central Market of Valencia.

Unbelievably good food. The beef rib was a huge win for us all. Tapas all came swiftly and was beautiful. All staff were incredibly hospitable, accommodating for the kids and gave some excellent recommendations. Will definitely be back if/when we are next in Valencia. Not a single negative thing to say about this place at all. Genuinely think it’s some of the best food we’ve had!

We came during a busy lunchtime with no reservation and were lucky to get a nice spot outside. The location is fantastic right in the middle of a lively square with a great atmosphere around. Service was friendly and efficient, and having an easy English menu definitely helped. Myself and my five-year-old shared the fresh catch of the day, grilled cod, and it was absolutely amazing. The prawn dish on the other hand was a bit average compared to how good the fish was. The downside of the experience was the number of beggars approaching tables throughout the meal. It happened several times and made it hard to fully relax, as you constantly felt the need to keep an eye on your belongings and what was on the table. It would have been nice if the staff were a bit more proactive and protective of guests in that regard.

We had a delicious dinner at BARDEBARES. We both ordered the steak, and it was absolutely amazing. The portions were really generous there was plenty of meat, so we left feeling completely full and satisfied! The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and the food came out quite fast. The prices were also very fair for what you get. The only small downside was that the restaurant is right next to another busy terrace, which got pretty noisy at times. It was a bit annoying every now and then, but it definitely didn't ruin our evening. Highly recommended!

Wow! We just randomly picked a place for 10 of us and they gave us the second floor room all to ourselves at 2pm. Exceptional service! We ate many different plates and each person said the food was great. Lots of unique tastes. Only one dish was a bit salty (the sausage and potato dish).
Matt Fisher★★★★★
Very lovely tapas, good selection, we had potatas bravas, oil bread with cheese, crunchy pork belly, chistorra, and mushroom croquettes. All very good! Pork belly was about 3/4 fat, but that’s arguably quite normal. Anyway all good quality. Also enjoyed cocktails not on the menu.

Absolutely magnificent! Top notch service from Maria Paz who was a delight. Great wine options. Really great and creative food options. We loved the oxtail, cuddlefish, sandwich, and gazpacho. We also had the best cheesecake I've ever had in my life, by an absolute mile. Arrive early for shorter wait. Line gets long after 1.

Overall the entire market atmosphere is electric and has an incredible buzz. We were quite happy to wait in the queue about 40 minutes. It was not a problem at all because we can see it’s busy, they don’t have many seats and the best of all the waiters walked the queue taking drinks orders. Made the wait sweet! The food was good, we did enjoy the patatas bravas and the artichokes were delightful. Two highlights for us - Aqua de Valencia served in a big glass - was delicious worth the €10 and the warm chocolate cake was incredible! Not so delightful was the pork, cheese and mustard sandwich that people rave about, it was not to our taste. Will we visit again - yes and do we recommend a visit = yes!
Brian Thomas★★★★★
Keep in mind that all seating is at the bar in the middle of a crowded market place. There's no reservations and you will probably have to wait. But it is worth it! The food could easily be served in a high end restaurant so the chef definitely lives up to his reputation. We enjoyed being in the hustle and bustle of the market and would definitely recommend that you sit down for a glass of aqua de València and some tapas! We ordered off the daily menu and it was all good!

We were on a very short trip to Valencia, and after having a very disappointing breakfast at the hotel, we decided to have our last breakfast in Valencia in the Mercado Central. Two birds, one stone right? If it weren’t for my friend, I would never think of Central Bar for breakfast, because it’s just not what you would normally eat at that hour, but it was the best decision ever. We ordered a piece of tortilla, a chicken sandwich from the Sandwich Menu of the day, and a Rabo de Toro. Everything was phenomenal. It’s not even a normal restaurant kitchen but the food blows your mind. My biggest regret was being too full to finish my sandwich. It was such a simple sandwich consisting of marinated chicken THIGHS, baby spinach, cheese and a beautiful crusty bread, with a lot of garlic. I will dream about that sandwich. It sounds simple but it’s flavour was anything but. The Rabo de Toro was generous in portion, extremely tender and the sauce was a delight. I dipped the bread of my sandwich in it because it was so well balanced. A bit tart, a bit sweet, for sure very meaty in flavour, just the right gloss and viscosity. Finally the tortilla. It was thick, but runny in the center, yet somehow still held its shape. Of course, made with onions. It was also a wonderful tortilla. Maybe not the best I had, but definitely up there. If I ever come back to Valencia, I will stop by this place again. It was phenomenal.
Traveling Foodie★★★☆☆
Sorry to say, but this place is highly overhyped due to the famous chef. But it wasn’t anything special nor worth the price. Our grilled squid was undercooked and the meatballs had little flavour. Croquettes were nice though. Honest opinion.

This was our second visit to Boatella, and it confirmed everything we loved the first time. The food is simply outstanding. Every dish we ordered was full of flavor, fresh, and beautifully prepared. Service is incredibly fast and efficient without ever feeling rushed. A very special thank you to Alfonso, who served us on both of our visits. He is genuinely one of the best waiters I have ever met—friendly, professional, attentive, and always making guests feel welcome. Experiences like this are created by people like him, and he deserves recognition for the excellent job he does. Yes, you may have to wait for a table, and the atmosphere is not the main reason to come here. But when the food and service are this exceptional, none of that matters. Muchísimas gracias, Alfonso, y gracias a todo el equipo de Boatella. Sin duda volveremos.

No fans outside so it's very hot in the summer, recommend bringing a fan. Saw the place was quite busy but think it's a tourist trap, food was quite average and prices were high for the amount we received. Maybe we ordered the wrong things? But felt it wasn't very authentic. Ordered the baccalau croquettes, calamari and the pan con tomate
Serena★★★☆☆
The food was amazing but too expensive for tapas only… We took 2 plates : one with fried seafood and the other with patatas bravas. Costed us around 35/40€ for this. Can find cheaper elsewhere for sure. +++ we waited 40 minutes for a table on the terrasse….
James Hadfield★★★★★
Sooooooo good. I need another star! €66 for the glasses of wine, tortilla, sausages, deep fried prawns, pardon peppers a Valencian salad and a flan. You won’t find better in Valencia.
Anamaria Dunea★★★★★
We came here for authentic tapas and left satisfied. Quick service and great food. Even thought we had to wait for 15-20 mins for a table, the experience was worth it.

I visited this restaurant several times during my stay in Valencia, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots. I tried a variety of their tortillas and sandwiches, and everything was consistently amazing. My personal favorite was the sandwich with Serrano ham and cheese — absolutely delicious. What really stood out to me was the quality of the products, as well as the friendly and welcoming staff who always made me feel comfortable. I also really appreciated their wide variety of non-alcoholic drinks, which can be surprisingly hard to find. It made the experience even better. Overall, a fantastic place that I would definitely recommend and return to!

What a lovely little tapas place. We just had the Goats cheese tortilla, the local Turia beer and a lemon beer, all lovely. There are only a few tables outside, but a lovely find, the Agua de Valencia is popular here, will come back and try tomorrow !!

Really great restaurant! We had a fantastic experience here, with delicious food, super friendly service, and a very welcoming atmosphere from the start. The pork belly was definitely the highlight of the evening, packed with flavor and easily the best dish we tried. The beer was great too, and even the soft drinks were really nice. The staff were lovely to deal with and made everything feel easy and enjoyable. The place is quite small, so we had to wait about three minutes for a table, but that was no problem at all and absolutely worth it. Overall, a really enjoyable spot that we would happily come back to.

Omg what a cute spot. I just finished going to the markets and wanted to sit and have a coffee, I was greeted kindly by staff who have such a welcoming approach. The place itself is beautiful with indoor and outdoor seating and fans indoors. The little tapas bites which is €2.45 per plate are absolutely delicious, my favourite was the pork shoulder one. I was so pleased to visit on my last day in Valencia. Thankyou

We had an amazing evening at Tapeando! The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff were incredibly friendly, spoke great English, and made us feel welcome and well taken care of throughout the entire evening. The tapas were delicious, especially the patatas bravas. The drinks were just as impressive. The Agua de Valencia is a must-try, and the sangria was fantastic as well. We also highly recommend the Aperol Spritz and the mojito! All of the cocktails were perfectly made. If you’re looking for great food, amazing drinks, and outstanding service in Valencia, Tapeando is definitely worth a visit. We would happily come back!

SUCH a beautiful find. We are so glad we came across this beautiful restaurant. The food was incredible! Tomi was a great waiter, had so much fun chatting to him and lots of great drinks! 🙂 Our favourite was the calamari, I have genuinely never had calamari that incredible in my life. The steak was incredible , shrimp incredible! I will be back if I am ever in Valencia! ¡Muchas gracias!
NessaBlume21★★★★☆
Food was surprisingly delicious! Was a bit hesitant since its an Irish bar but would recommend! Tried agua de valencia here, and felt a bit watered down, wasn't very strong. We ordered the steaks and the iberico pork! All delicious and generous portions too!
Eliana Brown★★★★★
Order the Scallops. You will not regret it!! They’re tender, the meri sauce is to die for, and the added bonus of the scallop roe was a wonderful surprise. We will be coming back. Service was also great, very attentive and the place was clean and had a great atmosphere! Also the sangria is very tasty! We wanted to order more but felt nothing could follow up the scallops. We also really enjoyed the melding of flavors of the beet salad with orange and sardines. Was so great to have gluten free and dairy free tapas options!! Brava! We also overheard from our table neighbors that the squid was exSQUIDsite!
Rebecca Cohen★★★★★
Super cute spot and enjoyable service (Tomas was great) beet salad was amazing, but sardines aren’t for me, so get them on the side, as they’re very salty. Artichoke was meh. Much better in USA. Def like the vibes, and it’s well priced with great service.

Escalones de la Lonja completely stole our attention while we were walking through the old town. The street musician outside created such an amazing atmosphere that we instantly wanted to sit there and enjoy the moment. Being right next to La Lonja de la Seda made everything feel even more special and full of history. The octopus was absolutely delicious, the sangria was fresh and refreshing, and the whole place had that lively, warm Spanish energy that makes you want to stay all evening ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Great tapas and wine! The service was excellent, we had a very patient waiter that took the time despite our limited spanish. And the tapas came out super quick and were delicious. Great location too, super central in the old town near the mercato and lla Lonja.

Nice place, friendly staff, delicious good. Octopus was okay but something was missing in the taste. Squid was great but need to ask for extra lemon and salt , croquettes were not tasty

Avesta★☆☆☆☆
Really disappointed with the experience today given I went to another Cañas y Tapas two days ago and that place was amazing but this one today was seriously substandard and really left us thinking this chain is inconsistent. Ordered the mixed paella, which is supposed to have seafood; chicken; pork, and paella is supposed to be a filling dish that tends to overwhelm tourists. I did not realise that this meant 1 piece of chicken; 1 piece of shrimp; 1 piece of pork. We asked the waitress about it, and she was less than understanding and pretty hostile to us even politely asking why there was only one piece of each, and pretty much just walked off when we asked to escalate and never came back. She didn’t understand English so she might’ve misunderstood, but the insistence that this was normal and justifiable for the price is just not right. For the Iberian ham & egg — the egg was visibly overcooked but we didn’t complain. Wouldn’t come to this particular restaurant again. The male waiter with the earring was very polite and kind and supportive though. I think he deserves a bonus.
El Barto★★★★☆
The atmosphere is nice, and the staff are friendly. There is a good selection of food and drinks, and they even have their own beer. There are tables outside where you can enjoy your drink in peace while taking in the surroundings. There are also a few tables inside.

We had a very good experience here. We had huevos trufado and it was so delicious, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the mushrooms sauce was great. Also a very generous portion. It was served on a beautiful plate. Very good beer. Service was okay. We sat outside, we had a nice view of the square and of the church. The bar is very stylish, the upper floor has very nice large windows. Good service.
Nina Protulipac★★★★★
Very polite and cheerful service! I would like to give special praise. The food was tasty, served quickly, and reasonably priced. My favorite was the cheese with cherry tomatoes, followed by the chicken strips and then the calamari. The calamari were good, but a bit too oily for my taste. The Aperol deal (2 for €9.95) was perfect. 🍹 Highly recommended!
Wendy Royce★★★★★
A fun place for drinks and food. We stopped for drinks and snacks last night. They were out of my 1st choice for drinks but Sara, our server, recommmended an alternate which was superior. If she recommends a drink, listen to her, she knows of what she speaks. We also split an order of the patatas bravas and they were great, spicy and cooked perfectly. Overall, a great spot.

If you are looking for the real Valencia, this is the place to be! A small, authentic restaurant away from the hustle and bustle, tucked away in a cozy side street. The food and the cold drinks were fantastic especially the empanadas are an absolute highlight and a must-try! On top of that, the staff is amazing, highly attentive, and incredibly warm. You instantly feel welcome. I'm so happy I stumbled upon this place!

Incredible seafood paella!! It was excellent - the rice was just well caramelised and the seafood superb. A highlight of our trip to Valencia. Small downside: €18 per person felt a tiny bit expensive for the size of the plate, but we haven’t compared paella prices in other restaurants. We also really loved the sangria - the balance between the fruit sweetness and the red wine was just right.
Antonina S★★★★★
Visisted this restaurant today. Amazing food (ensaladilla rusa - the best we’ve tried so far, tortilla and meatballs)😍 will be back next time we are in Valencia👌

Delicious tapas with generous portions. Friendly and attentive service. Would come back and recommend it!

The paella was on another level, easily the best we’ve had in Valencia. Staff were genuinely warm and attentive. The place has a cosy, local atmosphere that doesn’t feel touristy at all. Highly recommend Tasquita del Mar if you want real flavor and a relaxed, authentic spot.

Essential Tips for Your Tapas Crawl

Before you dive headfirst into the culinary delights of the Ciutat Vella, it helps to understand the local etiquette and timing. Eating tapas in Valencia is not just about the food; it is about the rhythm of the day. Understanding when to go, what to order, and how to behave at the bar will significantly enhance your experience and help you blend in with the locals.

Timing is Everything: Spanish meal times are famously late. Lunch generally starts around 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely begins before 9:00 PM. If you want to experience the bars at their liveliest, aim for the aperitivo hour between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, or the evening rush starting around 8:30 PM. Arriving at 6:00 PM will often leave you dining alone in an empty restaurant.

Embrace the Bar: While many places have tables, the action—and the best service—happens at the bar. Standing at the counter allows you to point directly at the dishes you want, observe the fresh ingredients, and interact with the bartenders. It is also often cheaper, as some establishments charge a small supplement for table service on the terrace.

Look for the Local Specialties: While patatas bravas and croquettes are delicious everywhere, challenge yourself to try Valencian specific items. Look for titaina (a pepper and tomato stew), clóchinas (small local mussels, if in season), or figatells (a local sausage). Asking for the "especialidad de la casa" is always a good strategy.

Quality over Quantity: The goal of a tapas crawl is not to stuff yourself at the first stop. Order one or two small items per person, along with a drink, and then move on to the next location. This allows you to sample a wider variety of atmospheres and flavors. A small caña (draft beer) or a glass of local Valencian wine pairs perfectly with almost everything.

Cash is King: While most established restaurants accept credit cards, some of the smaller, more traditional bars in the narrow streets around the market may have minimum spend requirements for cards or operate strictly in cash. Carrying a few Euros in your pocket ensures you won’t miss out on a hidden gem just because you lack the physical currency.

The beauty of the area around the Central Market is that you can easily spend an entire afternoon wandering from one counter to the next. The distance between these culinary landmarks is short, allowing you to walk off a few calories between bites while soaking in the historic atmosphere of the old town.

By following the locals to the busiest counters and ordering with confidence, you will unlock a side of Valencia that goes far beyond the guidebooks. This is where memories are made—one toothpick-skewered anchovy and one sip of crisp white wine at a time.
