Marseille does not do quiet elegance. It does loud, sun-bleached, and gloriously unpredictable. While Paris refines the art of the café terrace, France’s oldest city turns it into a theatre. Here, the espresso is thick enough to stand a spoon in, the pastis flows long before noon, and the Mediterranean light makes even a cracked Formica table look cinematic.
Whether you are hunting for a digital nomad hideaway in La Joliette or a shaded square in Le Panier to watch the world argue over pétanque, the city’s caffeine culture is as diverse as its 111 villages. The modern Marseille coffee scene is a tale of two identities.
On one side, you have the deeply traditional neighborhood bars where the counter is zinc, the patron knows everyone’s name, and the coffee costs less than a metro ticket. On the other, a wave of specialty roasters and Antipodean-inspired brunch spots has crashed over the city, bringing flat whites, avocado toast, and pour-overs to a port historically fueled by dark roast and sugar.
Finding the perfect spot requires navigating a landscape of steep staircases, hidden courtyards, and the occasional aggressive seagull. You might walk into a former sardine cannery for a single-origin filter or sit on a milk crate outside a skate shop drinking a cortado. The unifying factor is the energy—a raw, unfiltered hum that makes it impossible to rush your cup.
This guide cuts through the noise. We have walked the length of the Corniche, braved the heat of the Vieux-Port, and consumed an irresponsible amount of caffeine to bring you the definitive list of the city’s best caffeine fixes. We have prioritized not just the quality of the bean, but the quality of the moment—the view, the atmosphere, and the pastry that sits beside your saucer.
Because in Marseille, coffee is never just coffee. It is a pause button on a city that moves fast and loud. It is a reason to sit down, mop your brow, and watch the ferries glide out toward the Château d’If. Whether you are a local looking for a new office or a traveler trying to decode the city’s rhythm, this list is your roadmap.
Below, you will find the best spots in the city right now, ranging from the iconic to the underground. No filler, no tourist traps—just the places we would send our friends to.

very good coffee and pain au chocolat!! lovely space and service was very fast. it had a kind of spacious vibe with some ambient sounds and clean ambiance. the cashier was lovely!! my bf ordered a lemon cake which was very lemony, seems like it was soaked in lemon juice, it was delicious. we ordered cafe creme, they were great.

Had a great experience here! We ordered a caramel latte and a caffe latte, and both were fantastic and well-made. We also tried the brownie, and it was incredible—perfectly soft and not overly sugary, which is exactly how I like it. (I devoured it so fast I forgot to take a picture!) The setup is simple: you head inside to order, and they have nice seating options both indoors and outdoors. Definitely worth a visit!

We came all the way here because of the rave Google reviews, so we had high expectations. Unfortunately, we didn't quite understand the hype. The coffee was decent but nothing particularly memorable. The chai latte lacked the balanced blend of spices that gives it its distinctive flavour.
Self-service, so you'll need to collect your drinks from the counter. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but it was a little disappointing given all the glowing reviews.

My go to place for coffee in Marseille. I tried all the available V60 options on their menu. All of them were prepared very well. They know what they’re doing with those. I did not try any of their special coffee drinks but others who were having those there said they were very happy with them

Cozy café with great coffee, a pleasant atmosphere, and a relaxed crowd. Friendly staff, really enjoyed it.
A small downside was that there were no croissants available🤷♀️

We stopped by Dutch Cafe in Marseille for breakfast, and it was such a lovely experience! The location is super cute, with outdoor seating that adds a charming touch. The owner and staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. The coffee was spot-on, and the bacon and egg muffin was absolutely delicious – just what we needed to start the day. A perfect little spot for a relaxing breakfast, and we’ll definitely be back!

I found this place thanks to Google. I went there for breakfast my first morning in Marseille and I liked it so much I didn’t go anywhere else for breakfast for the rest of my trip!
The granola bowl (with no banana) and a flat white was my regular order. At first the no banana request was greeted with confusion but by the second morning, it was expected! I also tried a slice of the carrot cake on day 2.
On my last morning in Marseille I switched to a cappuccino and it was so good, I had another! That morning I also added the egg & bacon muffin to my order as well as my regular granola bowl. Why not push the boat out on my last day 🙂
To recap; I loved everything here. On top of which, the mother & son staff combo were a absolutely lovely and welcoming.
Highly recommend!
Janine Nguyen★★★★★
We really enjoyed this café! We came here twice, because the coffee was very good. The food was good as well. We had a banana bread and a muffin. The banana bread was very good, the muffin was a bit dry but still good. The coffee was very good, the best coffee we had in france. The atmosphere is nice and the place is very cute decorated. The service is super friendly and welcoming. You can sit inside or outside. Outside you get to see all the people who walk by. I would definitely recommend to come here! Perfect spot for vegans.

Nice little coffee shop with not so nice coffee and very average pastries. Great for Instagram but very disappointing product considering the prices are higher than in other locations.
Staff was very nice and attentive however.

Stumbled across this spot in Le Panier by accident and made a number of visits during our stay. Friendly and accommodating staff, great sweet treats and good coffee. Would definitely recommend, especially the ananas coco caramel cake 😍

This fun dynamic coffee house is downstairs from the street level signs that mark its location. At the roadside entrance is a small bar with a coffee machine, but the real action is a floor below.
There you'll find a bright energetic space for several tables, many chairs, and even a co-working and meeting space. There are also inevitably patrons who take their coffee to the surface and sit chatting on roadside benches.
The place seems to foster community on several levels.

If you want an introduction to Algerian food that fits well with an American pallet, come here.
When I arrived, I was given complimentary watermelon and grapes which was very refreshing. I ordered a double espresso with some milk which was served with a complimentary cookie. I also ordered the chorba soup which was very very good and filling but not too heavy. It had very familiar flavors but still different which was nice. At the end I tried the original chai milk tea which was also amazing and served with a cookie. They mentioned they can even make the milkshake tea iced but it is better hot. I was surprised by how much complimentary fruit and cookies and bread I received for such a low price. All of this for only 12€ was too good of a price, truly too good. The best part though was the service and how welcomed I felt. I will be coming back!

I stopped at this café for breakfast. They offer coffee at a good price. I ordered a delicious nut cake for €5; the slice was big enough to fill me up. The décor was charming, and the service was very friendly. The host spoke English and even treated us to some homemade lemonade. I recommend it!

Black Bird Coffee is a trendy and simple coffee shop, it's located in a very interesting place that's worth checking out. Most perfect breakfast I have ever had!!!
I ordered an avocado croissant with smoke salmon. There is a bit sourness in the guacamole that I think is lemonade? Also, there is some honey in it that makes a perfect balance. Every bite is a surprise.
The vibe in the restaurant makes the meal more delicious. Every waiter and waitress greet every customers with a big smile, that’s rare here🫶🏻oh! Especially the one showing us the picture of the food, but I don’t know the name😭a waiter that’s the tallest on June 29th morning shift.
Sochinec★★☆☆☆
Understandable concept, but the execution needs work.
The line management is very poor. Picking up different-sized groups randomly creates chaos, puts unnecessary stress on staff, and results in customers being rushed. You can feel the pressure immediately — staff are trying to turn tables too quickly, which hurts the overall experience. The goal isn’t just to create a long line, but to create one that reflects real demand while keeping operations smooth.
Another issue: items being sold out too early. We hadn’t even ordered yet and already got the feeling that we were expected to leave. With an already limited, tightly curated menu, this shouldn’t happen — it only frustrates customers before the experience even begins.
That said, the food quality is overall good, which makes these operational issues even more disappointing. With better organization and pacing, this place could be much stronger.
Kim Shannon★★★★★
Service and food were excellent. Our favorites are the rose latte, oat latte, tropical twist and iced white mocha, the eggs Benedict, avocado croast, and brioche burrata.. Their bakery around the corner has exquisite pastries. Love the strawberries and cream croissant.
Allister Stanton★★★★★
I had a lovely bunch of green chakchuka and espresso here and could not have been more pleased. The dish was divine, with rich flavors and a very French twist with delicate pastry slices instead of traditional bread chunks. The espresso was tasty and strong and I was well attended to by the friendly and attentive staff, such as Kylian.
Daniel Jimenez★★★★★
I can't say enough about this place! The Classic American Pancakes with bacon and soft cooked eggs were perfect! Their crunchy yogurt was delicious! The Golden Boost juice and Chai Latte was a great addition! Kilian and Margaret were amazing servers, super kind and attentive. Very sweet! I love Marseille's hospitality. I recommend everyone to come here and enjoy the staff of Deïa !

Our favourite café in Marseille. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the whole atmosphere feels so cosy and welcoming. The pastries are unreal too… you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The cinnamon rolls are hands down the best we’ve ever had and the carrot cake is absolutely to die for. Make sure to get there early because the cinnamon rolls sell out fast!

An amazing coffee shop I totally recommend for a morning coffee in Marseille. The service was excellent, the people running the shop were very friendly and the coffee and cookies / cake exceptional, especially the carrot cake and the tripple chocolate cookie with salt. Also they are very helpful and careful about food allergies. A very nice place spotted in a quiet road in La Panier, ideal for a chill and with no rush coffee. Happy I randomly found it, you should totally pay a visit 🙂

An absolutely delightful find. Outdoor seating along a passageway with cool artsy vibes. Very friendly staff who speak English and reasonable prices. What’s not to like?❤️
Sal Chebbah★☆☆☆☆
Finding really good coffee in France isn’t always easy, so after trying several disappointing coffees in Marseille, we had high hopes for Coffee & Bakery. So many reviews pointed us here, and from the photographs and branding it looked like the kind of independent roastery you might stumble across in London.
The setting is lovely too: quiet, attractive and next to a fantastic little art studio where I ended up buying a poster by one of the artists, Cath. I love supporting independent local businesses, so everything felt promising.
There was a long queue and we waited around 20 minutes to order. Fine by me. I’d rather wait for something made with care. Good things come to those who wait.
Normally.
The lovely, smiling waitress enthusiastically recommended the carrot cake, telling me it was unbelievable. As someone living in London, where I’ve eaten some fairly exceptional carrot cake, I smiled and took her word for it.
We ordered two double espressos.
Another 8–10 minutes later, they arrived at our table. By this point I’d waited almost half an hour for a coffee, so expectations were understandably high.
I smelled the espresso and immediately knew something wasn’t right. It was an extremely pale brown and unfortunately tasted exactly as it looked and smelled: flat, basic and without the depth, fragrance or complexity I associate with really good coffee.
And that is where I struggle with places that generate a lot of hype. Beautiful branding, single-origin beans and the appearance of speciality coffee are not enough. Coffee is a craft. The beans matter, but so do the roast, grind, extraction, equipment and, ultimately, what actually arrives in the cup.
Perhaps we caught them on a bad day, but this was probably the most disappointing coffee of our Marseille trip, particularly after waiting nearly 30 minutes and paying speciality-coffee prices for it.
I’m increasingly reluctant to accept mediocre food and drink simply because somewhere looks good or has excellent reviews. If we’re paying more for quality, the quality has to be there.
Lovely setting, friendly service and a nice place to support local businesses around it. But for the coffee itself, sadly, it’s a no from me.
Cody Tolmasoff★★★★★
What a delightful spot, slightly off the beaten path. The perfect spot to start your day before heading into the Panier. The coffee it top shelf and the pastries made on-site are delicious. Be sure to try the carrot cake bread.

Foreigners are not welcome.
Cafe had plenty of visibly empty tables, but suddenly everything became “reserved” once the owner realized we were only there for coffee.
So we ordered food. In fact, we ordered every single item on the menu. Apparently that still wasn’t enough to deserve a table and we were turned away.
Interesting definition of hospitality.

Love the atmosphere of this local cafe at the corner. The staffs are friendly, and the price is very reasonable. The coffee and the croissant were fair.

If you’re like me, an American tourist in search of early morning iced cold brew coffee before your sightseeing begins, this place has some and opens around 7am on weekdays. Just know that the CB comes from a bottle and they pour it into a cup with ice. Was still what I wanted though.

Such a lovely tiny coffee shop! Great coffee, and the girl working there was so friendly! This cozy little coffee shop in Marseille is a hidden gem!
The coffee is exceptional, but what truly sets it apart is the incredible hospitality of the owner. Even though we arrived close to closing time, she welcomed us in with a warm smile and allowed us to enjoy our coffee at our leisure.
Her thoughtful gesture of offering us water after finishing our drinks was a lovely touch. If you're looking for a place with great coffee and even better service, Café Lauca La Boutchica is a must-visit! 🥰

The service can be hit or miss and the food is overpriced. Charging 3€ for “greens” of just lettuce that’s barely even dressed when most places would include it as garnish in that portion size. Regarding the service I’ve been multiple times and the staff can nice but same staff on a different day can be so cold that you don’t even want to ask them for the salt + pepper to avoid the attitude. Also, do not order the iced matcha latte here… it’s terrible and barely iced.

We got off the ship and came onto this place. Call Leif fiancé, our server Roberto and Cat are amazing!!! The QR code for the menu will translate in English for you. We ordered the eggs Benedict and hot cakes for breakfast. Amazing French breakfast.

A place you want to stay all day long. A warm and cozy atmosphere with great coffee and delicious green juice. Talking about food, the scrambled eggs and the grilled cheese just an amazing experience. To repeat.

Cool, well-decorated cozy café with amazing homemade treats. The toast and the muffins were great. Super friendly staff and reasonable prices - a great spot, would definitely recommend.

Here’s the thing about this place, it has such a warm, cozy vibe, and the staff are genuinely the sweetest. I’ve really tried to love it, but the coffee is just always too sweet for me, probably because of the brand of oat milk they use (?) I’ll still be returning though. My friends adore it, and I’m on a bit of a mission to make it work.

Really nice staff, along with delicious and fresh food. What more can you ask for ?
Wonderful experience for a decent price. I would highly recommend this place.
5 stars.

Nice spot! I got the red creamy toasty which was delicious, and the iced chai was good as well. Friendly service. The music is a bit loud but otherwise good experience.

Was visiting Marseille with my family in May and found this gem of a coffee shop! Everything we ordered was excellent, from the cappuccinos to the smoothies and we were excited to find the owner spoke better English than we spoke French!

I stopped here several times while visiting malmosque.
Most importantly the coffee is incredible. So definitely stop in.
In addition to the great product all of the baristas were incredibly kind and skilled. I stopped in the first time because my friend got heat illness while in the area and asked for ice. Not only did they provide ice they kindly asked if my friend needed anything else and asked that I return if anything should come up and they would help. This was all translates through a language barrier as well so was definitely above and beyond, I am grateful for their kindness.
On my final trip I purchased a coffee and t-shirt and the barista gave me several adorable stickers that I was able to bring home and give to friends.
Definitely stop in while visiting marseille.

Had breakfast here with my family while visiting Marseille, and it was such a pleasant experience. The team working there is super attentive and friendly, even when the place is packed. You can really tell they care. The atmosphere is warm and uplifting — a great way to start the day. Don't leave without trying the pastries — they're homemade and taste amazing. 10/10!!!

Horrible service, make client walk outside in the heat to order, despite fact that could be order inside pointless. The coffee is average and the brasista didn’t even know what was a cortado I had to explain

I got a flat white with oat milk, and it was good! The staff are very kind. I’ll definitely be back!

we are beyond impressed!
the café is in a smaller street with a chill atmosphere. A quick walk from the port.
The owner/man was really nice and could speak english as well.
The coffee and food were delicious. We had cappuccino, avocado bread with salmon and eggs, plus pancakes. Everything was so tasty and totally worth the wait!
Furthermore the bathroom was really clean and you can pay with card above 10€

Unassuming breakfast / brunch spot. The brunch platter is phenomenal. Great variety and everything was so flavourful. Very good value for money. A must visit while in Marseille.

They bringed me my coffee!!
Delightful breakfast, esp. in an area where most places don’t open until noon. Quiet side street and INCREDIBLY attentive service. Try it — and look at this MODEST avacado, salmon & egg Benedict meal!

Honesty, better than I thought. This place was really good! I got the pink coffee, smoothie & the champagne (mushroom) avocado toast. Highly recommend everything! Coffee was one of my favorites I’ve had! The egg was cooked perfectly for the avocado toast, the only thing I would recommend is a touch of cayenne pepper! The smoothie tasted so fresh!
How to Choose Your Ideal Café in Marseille
Before you wander off into the maze of the 7th arrondissement, it helps to understand how the city’s coffee culture breathes. Marseille is not a city where you can just walk into any random spot and expect a quality experience; the gap between a tourist rip-off and a local gem is often separated by a single street corner. To help you drink like a local and avoid the overpriced, watery espresso served under a heat lamp, we have compiled a few essential survival tips for navigating the city’s café scene.
1. Embrace the “Terrace Tax” (Or Avoid It)
In France, prices often differ depending on where you sit. Drinking at the bar (au comptoir) is significantly cheaper than sitting on the terrace. If you are on a budget or just need a quick shot of caffeine, order standing at the counter like a local. If you are paying for the view of the Old Port, expect to pay a premium for the chair.
2. Know Your Coffee Vocabulary
While specialty coffee shops in Marseille speak fluent “latte,” the traditional bars operate on a strict French script. A “café” is an espresso. If you want a longer coffee, ask for a “café allongé.” If you want something milky, “café crème” is your friend. Asking for a “latte” in a traditional dive bar might get you a confused look and a glass of hot milk.
3. Timing is Everything
Marseille runs on a different clock. Cafés are chaotic between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM as workers grab their morning fuel. Lunchtime (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM) sees terraces packed with people eating, not just drinking. If you want to work on a laptop or read a book in peace, aim for the sweet spot between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, when the lunch rush has died down but the apéro crowd hasn’t yet arrived.
4. Don’t Sleep on the “Noisette”
If the intensity of a Marseille espresso is too much for your palate, order a “noisette.” It is essentially a macchiato—an espresso with a dash of milk—but the name is universally understood in every bar, from the fanciest roastery in Le Panier to the grittiest bar in Noailles. It is the perfect middle ground between a straight shot and a milky coffee.
5. Check the Opening Hours (And August)
Marseille is not a 24/7 city, and many of the best independent cafés close early (often by 6:00 PM) or shut down entirely for two days a week. Furthermore, if you are visiting in August, be prepared for “congés annuels”—many of the best family-run spots simply vanish for a month while their owners escape the heat. Always check recent social media updates before making a special trip.
6. Look for the Local Roasters
The quality of the bean matters. The best cafés in Marseille are often tied to local micro-roasters. If you see beans from local operations on the shelf, you are likely in a place that cares about what is in your cup. It is the difference between a place that treats coffee as fuel and a place that treats it as a craft.
Marseille is a city that rewards the curious. It does not lay its treasures out on a velvet rope for you; it hides them behind unmarked doors and up crumbling staircases. The best cup of coffee you have here will likely be the one you stumble upon while trying to find shade, or the one served by a barista who argues with you about football while perfectly steaming your milk.
So take your time. Order the pastry that looks the least familiar. Let the mistral wind blow the napkins off the table. And drink deeply—because in this ancient port, the coffee is as much about the salt air and the shouting as it is about the roast.
