Marseille has long traded on its reputation for raw energy, sun-scorched limestone, and the untamed spirit of the Vieux Port. It is a city of contrasts, where centuries-old alleyways hum with the sound of scooters and the scent of salt air mixes with the aroma of wood-fired pizza.
Yet, in recent years, a new layer has settled over this ancient port: a thriving specialty coffee and design culture that rivals the aesthetic standards of Paris or Copenhagen. Gone are the days when a quick espresso at a zinc counter was the only option.
Today, the Phocaean city is dotted with spaces where interior design is just as important as the quality of the roast. From sun-bleached minimalism to lush, plant-filled courtyards and gritty industrial conversions, Marseille’s café scene is a visual feast for locals and travelers alike.
Whether you are a digital nomad seeking a beautiful workspace, a photographer hunting for the perfect flat lay, or simply someone who believes that coffee tastes better in beautiful surroundings, Marseille delivers. The city’s unique light—that famous golden glow that inspired the Impressionists—pours through floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights, making these spaces feel almost cinematic.
This guide curates the most visually stunning and atmospherically pleasing spots the city has to offer. We have considered not only the design credentials but also the quality of the drinks and the warmth of the welcome. After all, an aesthetic café must back up its looks with substance to earn a place on this list.
Each venue on this list offers something unique, whether it is a hidden terrace away from the tourist crowds or a concept store that blurs the lines between retail and relaxation. Prepare to explore the quieter, more stylish side of France’s oldest city.
Without further ado, here are the must-visit destinations for design lovers and coffee aficionados in Marseille.

First and more important these days : waitress was very welcoming and smily.
The location is cool, pedestrian area, not too noisy.
Banana/choco cake was delicious, carrot cake as well.
Definitely a good address.

Very nice brunch options.
Scrambled egg cooked to perfection & the homemade peach ice tea is very refreshing. Our server was really friendly too so we will be visiting again 🙂

Black Bird Coffee is a trendy and simple coffee shop, it's located in a very interesting place that's worth checking out. The coffee is caffeinated and will give you the boost you need to start your day. The chocolate croissant is a standout item that's sweet and fresh, and a must-try for pastry lovers. The polite and quick service adds to the overall pleasant experience. With its stylish atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, and commitment to sustainability, Black Bird Coffee is a must-visit spot for coffee lovers in the city.

Good coffee and a few tasty breakfast options. Had a nice, partially shaded, outdoor seating area where we were able to enjoy our meal. The inside is also quite cool with “instagrammable” decorations and a cozy atmosphere.
Kae Elin★★★★★
Lovely place that serves delicious food with good portions and a good price, the decoration is beautiful and the staff is very lovely.
I'm definitely coming here again
(I ordered the bacon pancakes and the Jasmin ice tea, definitely recommend it)

very good coffee and pain au chocolat!! lovely space and service was very fast. it had a kind of spacious vibe with some ambient sounds and clean ambiance. the cashier was lovely!! my bf ordered a lemon cake which was very lemony, seems like it was soaked in lemon juice, it was delicious. we ordered cafe creme, they were great.

Had a great experience here! We ordered a caramel latte and a caffe latte, and both were fantastic and well-made. We also tried the brownie, and it was incredible—perfectly soft and not overly sugary, which is exactly how I like it. (I devoured it so fast I forgot to take a picture!) The setup is simple: you head inside to order, and they have nice seating options both indoors and outdoors. Definitely worth a visit!

We came all the way here because of the rave Google reviews, so we had high expectations. Unfortunately, we didn't quite understand the hype. The coffee was decent but nothing particularly memorable. The chai latte lacked the balanced blend of spices that gives it its distinctive flavour.
Self-service, so you'll need to collect your drinks from the counter. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but it was a little disappointing given all the glowing reviews.
Luigi Iannone★★★★★
My go to place for coffee in Marseille. I tried all the available V60 options on their menu. All of them were prepared very well. They know what they’re doing with those. I did not try any of their special coffee drinks but others who were having those there said they were very happy with them

Cozy café with great coffee, a pleasant atmosphere, and a relaxed crowd. Friendly staff, really enjoyed it.
A small downside was that there were no croissants available🤷♀️

Cute little coffee shop with lovely service and outdoor sitting. My matcha tasted more like vanilla milk than a matcha latte with vanilla syrup! I would go back but I would have to ask for an extra gram of Matcha if possible.

My fiance and I really loved our brunch experience here, on our first day in Marseille 🙂 the service was very friendly, the drinks were great - the matcha felt like actual matcha and not a mix (there was low or no sugar!) which is great! The food was delicious and I loved the fun names, we ordered Mr. Butt!

Excellent food, drinks and excepcional service. The place is also beautiful, very cozy. 100% recommended.

The capuccino was average. Service is terrible. They messed our order and didn't take it until I asked for it. Payment and menu browsing was easy. They also brought me food I didn't order. Two drinks we ordered didn't come at all.
Didn't want to ruin your rating. Be thankful
Jemellee Manaoat★★★★☆
Cali Kitchen of all places. I thought it was ironic. But, this brunch spot is the cutest and quaint spot. Not too far from where we’re staying. There is seating area inside and of course outside. The best place to sit is outside obviously to enjoy your food and see all the beautiful people.
The service is great. Our server Lucas was nice and yes he spoke English (which was helpful to us non-French speaking).
The food is amazing! Period. Perfect blend of sweet and savory. It’s beautifully plated and food came fast. They never rush you out so you can enjoy your food and company. Last but not least it’s not too pricey.

Cool, well-decorated cozy café with amazing homemade treats. The toast and the muffins were great. Super friendly staff and reasonable prices - a great spot, would definitely recommend.

Here’s the thing about this place, it has such a warm, cozy vibe, and the staff are genuinely the sweetest. I’ve really tried to love it, but the coffee is just always too sweet for me, probably because of the brand of oat milk they use (?) I’ll still be returning though. My friends adore it, and I’m on a bit of a mission to make it work.

A very nice café with great service. The lovely atmosphere and delicious food made for a perfect visit.

This fun dynamic coffee house is downstairs from the street level signs that mark its location. At the roadside entrance is a small bar with a coffee machine, but the real action is a floor below.
There you'll find a bright energetic space for several tables, many chairs, and even a co-working and meeting space. There are also inevitably patrons who take their coffee to the surface and sit chatting on roadside benches.
The place seems to foster community on several levels.

Lovely place, really relaxed atmosphere and owner really nice. Great coffee and cake too

A very nice upscale but cozy place for coffee, tea or juice. It has a great cozy vibe, both inside and outside on the covered patio, which has a couch and pillows.
We tried the cappuccino which was excellent, and the juice of the day (lemon, orange and carrot) which was delicious.

This place is a whole vibe! Tucked away from the touristy parts of the neighborhood, it is true French café culture at its finest! It is true to its name, very eclectic! The staff was super friendly and the menu was delicious!
The café tables are intimate and plentiful, clearly a revered neighborhood eatery visited by many!
The dishes were spectacular, I ordered the egg dish and the flavors were bright and refreshing. I could've have a 2nd plate but I held Miss Piggy back a bit! 🤣
Visit this spot, you won't me disappointed!
Carla Munoz★★★☆☆
The place was packed, and I think the staff was overwhelmed. We struggled to understand how the ordering system worked, and no one really explained it to us because they were so busy.
We arrived on time for brunch, but because it took us so long to figure out the process, we ended up missing it. No one asked if we needed help, even though we had been sitting there for a while. It turns out you have to order directly at the counter, and the menu is displayed in front of the counter, which was not very obvious and did not match the Google Maps photos.
That being said, they do have a very nice terrace area, and the small cinnamon-apple cake we got was quite good, so I imagine their brunch menu is good as well.
Rocío B. Parisi★★★☆☆
The coffee was average, it has nice chairs outside and is quite small inside. I asked for a café au lait that on the menu was €3,50 but the lady charged me €5 without reason, and I only noticed when I already left the place.
They stay giving their backs to the counter while they talk and you wait there until they decide it’s time to work.
Brid★★★★☆
We came here to grab a coffee and tea recently. The cakes on display looked absolutely delicious but we didn't try. My coffee was good. The price is good. The girl who served me though was eating her nails as she was serving me and then touching food straight after without gloved. Even as I passed her money she was still eating her nail. She just didn't seem to register that you can't do this for so many reasons in the food industry - it's disgusting.
Sam★★★★★
One of the best lattes in Marseille. I highly recommend this coffee shop. The terrace is so bright and spacious, you want to stay all day. Perfect on a Sunday. Their banana bread is good too!

Jón Prüßmeier★★★★★
We came across this café by chance while watching a travel vlog about Marseille on YouTube. Without that recommendation, we probably wouldn't have gone inside, as the place looks rather inconspicuous from the outside and the menu is relatively small.
However, the food, the atmosphere, and the prices were all excellent. We shared an egg mayo sandwich and a brioche topped with sugar crystals. The brioche was still warm and tasted wonderful, while the crunchy, sweet sugar crystals complemented it perfectly.
Both the bread used for the egg sandwich and the filling itself were delicious. There was just the right amount of mayonnaise – not too much and not too little. It was perfectly balanced, allowing the flavours of the bread, egg, and lettuce to stand out instead of being overwhelmed by the sauce.
I also had a large Americano. Altogether, everything cost around €13, which was excellent value for the quality we received.
We would happily come back the next time we visit Marseille and would definitely recommend this place to our friends and family. Thank you very much!
Ana Julia Tagliassachi★★★★★
DELICIOUS AMAZING COFFEE! Best cappuccino I had in a long time!! Lovely place, the guy who got our order was super polite, had a delicious chocolate cake and my bf had the monster cookie. The cookie was filled with lots of nuts and chocolate. We absolutely adored this tiny coffee shop.
Allen Han★★★★★
Definitely in my Marseille list.
The cafe in the city center which with marseille active vibes!
I order expresso, monster cookies, and the Brioche au sucre. I finished all and still want to try others…..
Good place for a quick and short rest in the city!
Asma Florençon★☆☆☆☆
I guess some places think that the hype alone will save them. We ordered two identical lattes, one was basically just milk, the other too strong - everything watered down with too much ice, glasses half the size of a similar drink anywhere else, but of course even more expensive. You're better off going just about anywhere else for coffee, and don't even get me started on their cookies. The choice of metal furniture broiling in the heat with no parasols is just the perfect finishing touch. Bravo.
Rupal Gupta★★★★★
Excellent and friendly service. The coffee (I had a decaf cappuccino with oat milk) is indeed excellent and the barista made the latte art such that it remained “art” through every sip! The cake orange almond polenta was excellent and is a must-have - fantastic crumb and moisture.

Was visiting Marseille with my family in May and found this gem of a coffee shop! Everything we ordered was excellent, from the cappuccinos to the smoothies and we were excited to find the owner spoke better English than we spoke French!
Erynn Martin★★★★★
I stopped here several times while visiting malmosque.
Most importantly the coffee is incredible. So definitely stop in.
In addition to the great product all of the baristas were incredibly kind and skilled. I stopped in the first time because my friend got heat illness while in the area and asked for ice. Not only did they provide ice they kindly asked if my friend needed anything else and asked that I return if anything should come up and they would help. This was all translates through a language barrier as well so was definitely above and beyond, I am grateful for their kindness.
On my final trip I purchased a coffee and t-shirt and the barista gave me several adorable stickers that I was able to bring home and give to friends.
Definitely stop in while visiting marseille.
Maryan Markoski★★★★★
Had breakfast here with my family while visiting Marseille, and it was such a pleasant experience. The team working there is super attentive and friendly, even when the place is packed. You can really tell they care. The atmosphere is warm and uplifting — a great way to start the day. Don't leave without trying the pastries — they're homemade and taste amazing. 10/10!!!

Horrible service, make client walk outside in the heat to order, despite fact that could be order inside pointless. The coffee is average and the brasista didn’t even know what was a cortado I had to explain

We had breakfast there, the staff were lovely and friendly.
I had a set which costs 8€, but just 2 slides of toast with butter/ jam, coffee and orange juice.
It’s quite overpriced, maybe they could be a bread more or lower price.
Overall the experience was good and easy for taking breaks while waiting trains.
Jayashree Arunachalam★★★★★
A cute little place that is vegetarian vegan . A little too heavy in shabby chic. The food I ordered was wholesome and tasty and freshly made. Seems to be a very popular place, going by the crowds! A relief to eat a wholesome plate after a week of croissant, pain au chocolat and pizzas!
Geraldine Marien★★★★★
I had one morning to spend in Marseille while waiting for a train. I was looking for a café to sit at as i had some work to do. A friend of mine suggested me this place and it was just perfect!
Plenty of space to sit, fit your bags in a corner, chill atmosphere to work, nice food and drinks and friendly staff.
Plus they have beautiful ecological values making things from scratch, doing what they can to lower their carbon footprint.
It's a 100% go-to for me 🙂

Amazing vegetarian restaurant that changes menus everyday, food tastes like homemade, which is amazing, and the employees are always happy and smiling. Beware, always full during lunchtime. They also provide amazing bread and soup, a must go even for non vegetarian, you won't even remember there is no meat in the food

The cafe la Muse is located next to a beautiful street. However we had a cappuccino and a flat white and they were quality wise mediocre at best. Very sour in taste with a croissant from yesterday. We wouldn’t recommend going here again even though sitting here is really nice.

It’s the kind of place I end up going to all the time… and staying for hours.
The chocolate chip & fleur de sel cookie is to die for, and I’m still thinking about their apricot and za’atar sparkling drink, which was a surprising discovery.
Ahcene, Gaelle and Valentin take such good care of everyone : always soft, never rushed, it really feels like a little cocoon.
I usually sneak upstairs, sit by the window, watch people pass by downstairs, find inspiration in the condensation on the glass, and sometimes just look down to see what’s going on below.
Music is always right, the space is arranged with taste, full of colors, magazines, fresh flowers… everything feels easy and cozy.
And when the weather is nice, it spills outside into the quiet street : vintage chairs, plants everywhere, a bit of sun and the gorgeous mural painting from the neighbours Velo Sapiens workshop as a background.
It’s one of those spots you come for a coffee and accidentally stay half the day 💛
Greta Gervasio★★★★★
Breakfast so good we came back the day after!!!! The coffee is reallyyy good and we loved the breakfast plate with eggs, bread, tomato, butter and cheese (best goat cheese ever we even asked for the shop where they get it from) and the granola bowl was also super yummy! The second day we also tried the ‘tartine du moment’ and ‘baghrir’ which were recommended by the staff and they were also wonderful! The vibe is quiet and cozy + eclectic furniture and really sweet people running the place

This restaurant-bar is located on the second floor in a building across the street from the pier, near the Office of Tourism. The cozy restaurant had a nice bar, and ship/maritime decorations. It almost felt like you were in an 1880s living room. Our server was friendly and we had a nice lunch and a rose that was a a great complement to the meal. Most of us ordered the caesar salad, which was tasty but I prefer less dressing. This was my second caesar salad in France and both times, the lettuce was drenched in dressing. I am starting to think that, this is the way the French like their caesar salads, so I didn't want to take a star off for not American-izing their salad, and also because the dressing was tasty but just too much of it, for my taste. Views were beautiful, service was great.

Probably the coolest bar in all of southern France. Super friendly staff - very chill. The ceviche we ate was probably the best on our 2 week trip. Great views. Not crowded.

Outstanding experience from beginning to end.
Everything was meticulously organized, spotless, and carefully arranged, which instantly fostered a cozy and inviting environment. The staff was courteous, professional, and attentive, always prepared to assist and address any inquiries. The overall quality genuinely surpassed my expectations, and it’s evident that they are committed to delivering excellent service. I particularly valued the meticulous attention to detail and the seamless, stress-free process. It’s not always simple to discover a venue that consistently provides such a favorable experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking dependability and quality, and I eagerly anticipate returning in the future.

Lovely place to eat, slightly cold and onions under cooked but I think that was mainly because we ate outside. We enjoyed it regardless and the waitress was very kind and helpful

How to Choose the Right Café for Your Vibe
While every venue listed above offers a unique aesthetic, finding the right fit for your specific needs requires a little local knowledge. The atmosphere in Marseille can shift dramatically from the gritty portside energy to the bohemian calm of the Cours Julien within a few blocks. To ensure your café experience is seamless, consider the practical aspects of your visit, from timing to technology.
1). Match the Light to Your Goal
If you are a content creator or photographer, plan your visit according to the sun. Many of Marseille’s aesthetic cafés feature large south-facing windows or outdoor terraces. Morning light (before 11 AM) offers a soft, clear glow perfect for interiors, while the “golden hour” in the late afternoon casts dramatic shadows that highlight textured walls and ceramic cups.
2). Check the Wi-Fi Policy
Not all beautiful cafés are designed for laptop work. Many high-design spaces in Marseille intentionally limit Wi-Fi access to preserve a social, relaxed atmosphere. If you need to work remotely, call ahead or check recent reviews to see if the venue is “laptop friendly.” Often, the most visually stunning spots are best reserved for conversation and reading, while slightly less curated spaces cater to digital nomads.
3). Embrace the Terrace Culture
Marseille’s climate allows for outdoor seating nearly year-round. However, the most aesthetic terraces—often hidden in courtyards or on rooftops—fill up fast. Arrive before 10 AM or after 3 PM to secure the best seats without a wait. Remember that the Mistral wind can be strong; choose a sheltered spot if you plan to stay for a while.
4). Explore the Neighborhood Pairings
Don’t just go for the coffee; go for the walk. The best aesthetic experiences often involve the journey to the front door. Many of the city’s prettiest cafés are located down unassuming side streets or within concept stores. Pair your visit with a trip to a nearby gallery, vintage shop, or local market to maximize the atmosphere of the arrondissement.
5). Support the House Roast
To truly appreciate the craft, ask the barista about the beans they are pulling. Many aesthetic cafés in Marseille partner with local roasters or roast their own beans in-house. Ordering a single-origin pour-over or a signature house latte not only tastes better but often comes served in custom-made ceramics that elevate the visual experience further.
The beauty of Marseille’s café scene lies in its refusal to be homogenized. Each space tells a story about the neighborhood it inhabits, from the artistic rebellion of Noailles to the laid-back luxury of the Corniche. Taking the time to slow down in these spaces allows you to connect with the city on a deeper level than the typical tourist trail permits.
As you plan your itinerary, remember that the best memories are often made in the quiet moments between sights. Whether you find yourself lost in a paperback on a vintage velvet sofa or watching the harbor light dance across a marble tabletop, these cafés offer a sanctuary. Enjoy the ritual, savor the flavor, and let the distinct aesthetic of Marseille inspire you.
