10 Best Shopping Areas Near Plaza de España

Sitting at the western edge of Madrid’s historic center, Plaza de España is one of the city’s most dynamic junctions. It connects the grand Gran Vía with the green expanse of Parque del Oeste and the Royal Palace district, making it a natural starting point for visitors.

Beyond the square’s iconic Cervantes Monument and the recently pedestrianized surroundings, a world of retail discovery awaits. Whether you are hunting for vintage treasures, high-street fashion, or unique artisan goods, the surrounding neighborhoods offer distinctly different shopping experiences.

Understanding where to go from Plaza de España can save you time and help you avoid generic tourist traps. The area is a gateway to several distinct commercial ecosystems, each with its own rhythm, architecture, and target audience.

From the bustling energy of Gran Vía to the bohemian charm of Malasaña, the retail landscape here is incredibly varied. You can walk ten minutes in one direction and find luxury boutiques, or ten minutes in another and stumble upon a flea market stall.

This guide focuses on the most rewarding, walkable shopping areas that offer the best balance of atmosphere and variety. We have prioritized zones that are safe, accessible, and rich in local character rather than just listing individual chain stores.

By exploring these districts, you will experience Madrid not just as a shopper, but as a local. Each area has a distinct personality that reflects the history and culture of the Spanish capital.

Here are the best areas to explore, all within walking distance or a short metro ride from Plaza de España.

Not many shops, but a worthy visit to stroll around.

The building used to be train station and caught our eye as we were passing. Always delighted that old iconic buildings are not destroyed but repurposed. The developer did a great job as the main features remain ie it feels like a railway station still but shops and cinema inside. Lovely to stroll through.

Beautiful building that was once a train station. I went to the Bodies Exhibition held in the mall and it was fairly interesting. Inside the shopping centre there's also a multi cinema, a McDonald's and a a few ceramic and craft shops.

Once a train station and now a small shopping mall, with a small tourist office, coffee shop l, Mcdonald and few other shops. It was nice to discover it while we were walking by.

The last time I came to Barcelona. El Corte Inglés at Plaça de Catalunya was not open for a few days due to a major holiday. I finally shopped here today. Wow! I love this department store. It has 10 or more levels (including the supermarket and food court in the basement). I lost count of how many levels it really has. Lol! The store has everything you need for you, your family, your pets, and your house. It is truly one-stop shopping. I wish we had a store like this in California.
Maya Maya Official★★★★☆
My experience in the store was very similar to my experience at Macy's flagship store in New York city, great! With a notch up because more merchandise in the fragrances than Macy's , the food floor great, a lot gourmet, delicious food. Designers all what you want and more. Super fun !!! To shop, went there three days during my travel .

El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya is truly a one-stop destination where you can find everything under one roof. From the latest kids’ toys and gifts to cutting-edge high-end electronics, premium home design items, fashion, cosmetics, and gourmet food — this place delivers on every level. The selection is vast yet well-curated, making it easy to move from shopping for family essentials to browsing luxury brands without feeling overwhelmed. Add to that the central location, excellent layout, and consistently professional service, and you get a shopping experience that’s both efficient and enjoyable. If you need one place in Barcelona that genuinely has it all, this is it.

El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya is definitely worth visiting if you are in central Barcelona. Its location is probably one of its biggest advantages, right on Plaça de Catalunya and within walking distance of many of the city's main attractions and shopping streets. The department store is huge and offers an impressive variety of products across multiple floors. You can find clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, perfumes, electronics, home products, food, souvenirs, and many well-known international and Spanish brands. It is particularly convenient when you want to do different types of shopping without having to visit several separate stores. Despite the size of the building and the number of people visiting, I found the store well organized and relatively easy to navigate. The staff I interacted with were professional and helpful when I needed assistance. Another advantage is that you can spend quite a lot of time here, especially if you enjoy browsing different departments. The location also makes it easy to stop by during a day of sightseeing without making a special trip. Overall, I had a very good experience at El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya. It combines an excellent central location, a huge selection of products, recognized brands, and convenient shopping all in one place. I would recommend it both for serious shopping and simply for browsing while visiting Barcelona.
Damla Guray★★★★☆
Escribo sobre mi experiencia con la recogida en tienda. From the online page of the store was very practical and the process moved very quickly. When I went for in-store pickup, unfortunately, one of the 4 items was not ready, and since I had to return by ship on the same day, I wanted to cancel it. A black-haired lady who speaks English brushed me off quickly and left after saying something like ‘You can cancel it yourself when you see it's ready online." However, I was not satisfied with this answer and when I explained my situation and asked again to a very sweet lady named Mariona there, she completed the cancellation process in less than 5 minutes, gave me the document of the cancellation and processed it immediately. I thank her very much for respecting her work and helping me there🙏 Tax free area is on deck 9. Don’t forget to see the beauty of Barcelona from El corte Ingles..

Right on Barcelona’s waterfront, Maremagnum is a great place to combine shopping, dining, and a walk by the marina. It has a relaxed atmosphere with a mix of fashion stores, cafés, restaurants, and beautiful views of the boats and the Mediterranean. It’s an easy place to spend a couple of hours, especially after exploring the nearby waterfront. The location is one of the best features of this mall. Sitting outside with a drink or a meal while overlooking the marina was a nice break from the busy streets of the city. The shopping center is also close to attractions like the Columbus Monument, the Aquarium, and La Rambla.

I recently visited Centre Comercial Maremagnum during my trip to Barcelona, and it was one of the most enjoyable shopping and leisure experiences in the city. The location is absolutely fantastic, situated right next to the sea and surrounded by beautiful waterfront views. Walking around the shopping center while enjoying the fresh sea breeze creates a very relaxing atmosphere. The mall offers a wide variety of stores, including many well-known international and local brands. There are plenty of opportunities to find good deals and discounts, making it a great place for shopping enthusiasts. Whether you are looking for clothing, accessories, souvenirs, or everyday items, there is something for everyone. Another thing I really liked was the large selection of food and snack options. From quick bites and coffee shops to restaurants with outdoor seating, there are plenty of places where you can sit down, relax, and enjoy the surroundings. After shopping, it is wonderful to take a walk along the waterfront or simply sit near the beach and enjoy the view of the sea and boats passing by.The shopping center is clean well-maintained, and easy to navigate. The combination of shopping, dining, entertainment, and stunning seaside scenery makes Maremagnum much more than just a mall. I would definitely recommend Centre Comercial Maremagnum to anyone visiting Barcelona. It is the perfect spot to shop, eat, relax, and enjoy some of the best waterfront views in the city.

Came here more for the Time Out Market on the top floor, as I went to the one in Portugal. Wasn't as busy, so plenty of places to sit, even outside on the balcony overseeing the views of Barcelona. Some good choices for eatery so plenty to choose from. Just don't take too long to decide. There wasn't much stalls for dessert just to let you know, if you want something sweet.

Maremagnum is a large shopping and leisure complex located right by Barcelona’s waterfront in Port Vell. It’s known for its seaside setting, variety of shops and restaurants, and scenic views of the harbor. It was raining heavily when I visited, so staying in the mall turned out to be the perfect choice. The place is huge, with plenty of options for shopping and dining, making it easy to spend a few hours there. The port area just outside is also really beautiful – especially at night. The waterfront views and reflections make for amazing photos.
Kees van Toorn★★★★★
What a great place at the seaside of Barcelona, close to the huge and wonderfull aquarium. A bus stop in front of the door, easy connection to the metro and city. Lower floors have a shopping mall with many stores, topfloor is the TimeOut restaurant with dozens of different small (and huge) restaurants and bars. Lots of seats and tables, lots of types of food to chose from from simple tapas to sushi and exquisite meat. Prices vary from cheap to expensive. And one can even rent cellphone charges if needed. Nice outside with view of the harbour. Great place to wine and dine as well spent many hours just to enjoy the sights, food an drinks.

Arenas de Barcelona is a shopping center that, in my personal experience, feels quite average overall. From the outside, the building looks really impressive and massive, so I expected something more special inside, but once you go in, the variety of shops is actually quite limited compared to other malls in the city. That said, the most memorable part of the visit is definitely the rooftop. I really enjoyed going up there because it offers a great panoramic view of Barcelona, and it feels much more interesting than the shopping experience itself. It’s a nice spot just to relax for a while and look over the city. Overall, I would say it’s worth visiting mainly for the rooftop view, rather than for shopping.
Mohammad Diab★★★★☆
I visited Arenas de Barcelona and spent a few hours there before my flight. The building itself has an interesting history, as it was originally a bullring before being converted into a shopping mall. Once you’re inside, however, it feels like a modern mall, and there is very little that reminds you of its original purpose. The mall has several levels, although each floor is relatively compact. You’ll find a mix of fashion stores, sunglasses shops, technology retailers, and other everyday services, along with cafés, restaurants, public restrooms, and parking. One of the highlights is the rooftop terrace, which offers wide views across Barcelona. You can see both the mountains and the sea in the distance, and the Sagrada Família is also visible from the rooftop. There are a few viewing telescopes available if you want a closer look at the city. Overall, I wouldn’t consider it a destination mall, but if you are already in the area, it’s a good place to spend an hour or two, have a meal or coffee, and enjoy the views from the rooftop.
Zeeshan Zuberi★★★★★
Lovely 360 degree views of the city from the top. We just stopped by on our way to the hotel on the last day after a tiring day out. It was quick to get to the top floor and we were back on our way in 20 minutes. There were quite many dining places on the top floor but it was a bit early for dinner.
Izzy Van★★★★☆
Arenas de Barcelona It’s a mall located in what used to be a bullring, and I really like the design. It has a rooftop terrace with a viewpoint looking out toward the MNAC, the National Art Museum of Catalonia. If you’re here around the right time, you can also see the Magic Fountain show from this spot. It’s worth visiting and I recommend it for that reason, but I wouldn’t say it’s a mall with big-name stores. I wouldn’t go here to shop. Instead, I’d go for dinner at one of the restaurants on the terrace and just enjoy the view.
Robert Roberts★★★★★
Beautiful mall with such a unique design. This mall is in a round building that has a rooftop with 360 degree views of the city. There are so many options for shopping and also for dining. The one thing that I was taken aback by was paying for the restrooms. They are 1 euro to enter the restrooms however if you make a purchase at a store, you can ask for a QR code to scan to enter the restrooms without paying. Great place to visit while in Barcelona.

After spending several hours shopping, my wife and I decided to take a break and have a coffee at the restaurant inside El Corte Inglés Duque. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the moment we arrived. We stood at the entrance for a while waiting to be acknowledged. There were several staff members present, with some taking orders and others chatting nearby, yet no one seemed interested in greeting or seating customers. Eventually, I made my way to the bar area and took a seat. One of the staff members told me he would be with me shortly, and he eventually took our order. My wife ordered a café con leche, and I ordered an affogato. When the drinks arrived, my wife’s coffee was fine. However, my affogato was served in a glass that had visible smudges, fingerprints, and marks on the outside. I immediately pointed this out because I did not feel comfortable drinking from a glass that appeared dirty. Rather than apologizing and replacing it without issue, the employee argued that the glass was not dirty. He then showed me another glass as an example, but when I held it up to the light, it appeared to have similar marks. I explained that the glasses needed to be cleaned more thoroughly. What disappointed me most was not the dirty glass itself, but the attitude that followed. Instead of addressing the concern professionally, the employee became defensive and argued with me. At one point, he stated that I would still be charged for the drink. I made it clear that I was not going to drink from a glass that I believed was not properly clean. The employee then spoke with his manager, who ultimately decided not to charge me for the affogato and only charged us for the café con leche. I paid the bill immediately and left. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserved one. Mistakes happen in every restaurant. A dirty glass can be replaced in seconds. What should never happen is arguing with a customer who raises a legitimate cleanliness concern. Considering El Corte Inglés positions itself as a premium shopping destination, I expected a much higher level of professionalism and customer service. Unfortunately, this visit fell well below those expectations.

We happened to be staying in a hotel very close by and after several shopping trips we needed to buy a carry on suitcase (!) so we went into El Corte Inglés. It’s a beautiful store - spacious and spotless - reminded me of Niemans or Saks. Got the case and some shirts from Ralph Lauren - everyone was very helpful!

Sorry, I don’t have better photos, but this is such a nice mall. 🤣 If I’m not mistaken, it might be one of the biggest malls in Alicante. They have a wide variety of shops, and it feels like you can find almost everything here—groceries, clothes, shoes, gaming, tech, and more. I also really like the layout. It’s mostly rectangular with an open space in the middle, so you can easily see many of the shops around you. There’s also a really big cinema with many screens, which is a nice bonus. Super nice mall with lots of choices.

I’m used to traditional malls, but this place truly surprised me with how beautiful it is. I loved the variety of shops—you can find just about anything here. It’s not as large as I expected, but it’s the perfect size to explore comfortably in about an hour. The whole area is very clean and pleasantly quiet, and everyone I encountered was sweet and respectful. I also appreciated the easy access throughout the building, including the escalators and wheelchair-friendly options. A really great experience overall!

I think this shopping center is good. I went there in a morning and everything was working. And there floor was clean. The only problem I have that the entrance are far away and Becouse I was not on a car I needed to walk all that distance but I think that is not a big deal. Everything is easy to find and they have places where you can leave you stuff in safe place so I think that deserves 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Im not a fan of Shopping centers and this one is worse than average. Very dirty and ugly looking building surrounded by strange layout of roads and human labyrints with trash and no shadows. No space to park bicycle (at least i didnt found one). Inside its average, plenty of shops, but nothing special, for clothing decathlon is better, and for other choice amazon is more convenient and cheap. Bad experience overall

The mall feels a bit dated and is mostly designed for people arriving by car, with not much foot traffic. Typical shopping mall stores and a decent selection overall, but nothing particularly special.

Nice shopping mall which is air conditioned and with. Lots of restaurants and also some shops which are more inclined to ordinary citizens rather than tourists. A good place to spend some time before taking trains since it is on top of an important train statiok, Principlo. The supermarket, Mercadona, is big and has reasonably priced items. There is a small dining area where you can eat the food bought from the supermarket. The area is well equipped with knives, forks, spoons, microwave, tissues and water for cleaning. This supermarket closes at 2:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays but opens till 9:30pm on working days.

Visited Diagonal Mar and had a very enjoyable experience. The area offers a modern and relaxed atmosphere, combining shopping, dining, leisure, and coastal surroundings in a very appealing way. One of the highlights is the balance between urban convenience and open spaces. The neighborhood feels spacious, clean, and well planned, with wide walkways, modern buildings, and easy access to the nearby beach. It creates a refreshing contrast to the more historic parts of Barcelona. I especially appreciated the shopping and lifestyle options available in the area. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, retail stores, and entertainment spaces, making it a great place to spend time during the day or evening. The environment feels lively without being overly crowded, which adds to the comfort of the visit. The nearby seaside atmosphere is another strong point. Being close to the Mediterranean coast adds a relaxing element, with pleasant walking areas and scenic views that make the experience even more enjoyable. The area also feels modern, safe, and well maintained, making it suitable for families, tourists, and casual visitors alike. Public transport access is convenient, allowing easy connection to other parts of the city. Overall, a vibrant and modern part of Barcelona that combines shopping, leisure, and coastal charm. Diagonal Mar is definitely worth visiting for a relaxed and enjoyable city experience.

Diagonal Mall is one of the biggest mall in Barcelona. It has a lot of shops offering local and international brands. At the same time there is huge option for food and drinks. The multiplex offers new movies and opera and ballet shows. The service standard of the mall is top class. They have got the parking facility for 5000 cars with 3 hours free. Beside they have got 64 family sized parking spots and 54 specializes places for disabled people, great. There is a big area specially for children's entertainment. The shops are open from Monday to Saturday 9 to 9. Restaurants and leisure activities are open till 1 AM on weekdays and up to 3 on weekends and holidays. Worth visiting !!

Large mall, covers everything you’d expect. Got some clothes from Zara and had coffee and cake with my aunt. One practical note: the seating in the food area is mostly standard chairs, not great if you have mobility or comfort issues. We ended up at Starbucks which solved the problem but wasn’t ideal. Nothing special beyond that — it’s a solid, functional mall. Does the job.

Great mall with many different types of stores. There is a grocery store in the mall along with several playgrounds for kids. This mall definitely caters to every age from babies, toddlers, kids to adults and the elderly. The park on the terrace was very entertaining and is a great place for kids to exert their energy. The food court was huge with a wide variety of restaurants and stalls. Food prices however are not great and could be better. Line up at start bucks is long. Decathlon is huge and has all your travel needs. This mall is a short walking distance from both the subway and the beach, making it a very convenient location.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing shopping mall right by the Manzanares River! Plaza Río 2 is a fantastic spot if you are looking for a mix of high-end shopping and a relaxing walk. It features a huge variety of renowned brands like Zara, Pull&Bear, H&M, and Mango, along with plenty of classic shops and a large Alcampo. Great for Families: If you’re visiting with kids, there are a lot of options to keep them entertained. The "Esfera" terrace has an impressive outdoor play area with a giant slide and hanging bridges that they absolutely love. There is also a dedicated playroom called the Kids Team Area which is a lifesaver for parents wanting to shop. The Highlight: Make sure to head up to the rooftop terrace, El Mirador, for some of the best views in the city. The sights of the Madrid skyline and the river are stunning, especially at sunset. It’s the perfect place to grab dinner or a drink at one of the many restaurants (like Five Guys or Starbucks) while the sun goes down.

Shopping center located near the Paseo Rio and the Manzanares River. In addition to the traditional shopping, commercial premises, food court has an exceptional terrace that allows you to have a panoramic view of Madrid. This is also very appropriate shopping. With a location on the banks of the Manzanares River, it has even an open space for leisure. The entertainment options are good. It has about three floors of everything a shop can offer.

Great place to hang out and shop at! A bunch of stores to explore and great sales to discover. We came here twice in the past three days during our stay in Madrid! A lot less packed than the stores in city center and you find better deals and more sizes though still having a decent crowd.

This Mall is Amazing especially at night time, when the lights and the humungous electronics screens outside the mall are on and illuminates the entire area. A few stories tall, maybe 5 or 6 floors I didn't count, this mall has everything you need to stay shopping or just window shopping for at least a couple of hours. Nice layout, popular stores, a food court, restaurants, parking garage, and playground for the kids. The nice formal restaurants are located in the top floor. This Mall is right across a small bridge from "Matadero Madrid" a very popular Art Center of which i had written a review too.

I love this shopping mall. The location is very nice and easily accessible by Car, Bicycle and by walking for the people lives nearby. Very close to the Reina Mercedes Campus of Sevilla university. The shopping mall has almost all the top fashion brands. There is a branch of Primark in the mall. Nicely organized. They also have food course which is also nice.

This is a really nice mall by any standard. There's a grocery store, great food court options, plenty of outdoor activities, it's super clean and modern. Guys at the barber are great! It also has a 5 guys and really good sushi place.

Awesome mall, no public transportation need to take taxi to and from … like 30 euros round trip from old town

Fabulous shopping centre, very difficult to get to and from if you're not familiar with the area. Don't go shopping there on Sunday because the shops are closed. 15euros to get an Uber from old town. Expensive just for a beer!

Tips for Shopping Around Plaza de España

To make the most of your retail experience in central Madrid, it helps to understand the local shopping culture and logistics. The following tips will help you navigate the streets efficiently, find the best deals, and blend in with the Madrileño way of life while keeping your belongings safe.

Time Your Visit with Spanish Hours
While large department stores and chains on Gran Vía often stay open continuously from 10:00 to 21:00, smaller boutiques in Malasaña or Conde Duque typically close for siesta between 14:00 and 17:00. Plan your independent store visits for late morning or early evening to avoid finding locked doors.

Wear Comfortable Shoes
Madrid is a walking city, and the shopping zones near Plaza de España are connected by narrow, often cobbled or tiled streets. You will cover significant distances on foot, so prioritize comfort over style to keep your energy up for browsing.

Carry a Reusable Bag
Spain has largely phased out free plastic bags. While most stores will charge a small fee for a bag, carrying a lightweight tote is more sustainable and convenient for hopping between multiple shops.

Keep Your Receipts for Tax Refunds
If you are a non-EU resident, take advantage of the VAT refund (IVA). Most major retailers on Gran Vía participate in the Tax Free shopping scheme. You generally need to spend over €90 in a single store to qualify, so keep your passport handy and ask for the digital refund form at checkout.

Explore the Side Streets
The main thoroughfares are lined with international brands you can find anywhere. The real treasures, such as vintage clothing stores and artisanal leather shops, are hidden on the perpendicular side streets. Don’t be afraid to wander off the main road to discover smaller, independent retailers.

The beauty of shopping near Plaza de España lies in the seamless blend of the old and the new. One moment you are walking through a modern commercial hub, and the next you are discovering a historic workshop that has been operating for generations.

Take your time to soak in the architecture as you move between districts. The shopping experience here is not just about what you buy, but about the vibrant, living history of Madrid that surrounds you on every corner.
