The Gothic Quarter and El Born are not just the historic heart of Barcelona; they are also the epicenter of the city’s vibrant culinary scene. Waking up early to explore the narrow, winding streets before the crowds arrive is a magical experience, but it works up a serious appetite. Fortunately, the area surrounding the iconic Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar offers an incredible variety of morning dining options.
Finding the perfect spot for breakfast or brunch in this tourist-heavy district can be tricky, as quality varies wildly from door to door. You want to avoid the overpriced tourist traps with frozen pastries and seek out the authentic local spots and innovative brunch concepts. Whether you are looking for a traditional Catalan esmorzar de forquilla (fork breakfast) or a trendy avocado toast, this neighborhood has it all.
The key to eating well here is knowing where the locals go and which modern cafes have mastered the art of specialty coffee. From historic patisseries that have been serving xuxos for generations to contemporary kitchens pushing the boundaries of brunch, the options are diverse. We have walked these medieval streets to curate a list that balances tradition with modern flair.
This guide focuses on quality, atmosphere, and value, ensuring you start your day on the right foot. You will find options ranging from quick grab-and-go pastries to leisurely sit-down feasts, all within a short walking distance of the basilica. Prepare to trade the hotel buffet for a taste of authentic Barcelona life.
Whether you need a strong espresso to fuel your sightseeing or a hearty meal to recover from last night’s tapas crawl, there is a table waiting for you. The hardest part will be choosing just one spot from this list of exceptional morning eateries.
Below, you will find our curated selection of the best places to eat breakfast and brunch in the shadow of Santa Maria del Mar.

Reviewing brunch spots is somewhat of a new challenge, especially in a city like Barcelona, where there are hundreds of them and many feel like variations of the same concept.
The real secret to a good brunch review lies in the subtleties: textures, presentation, and balance of flavors,as well as, of course, the courtesy of the staff.
Nonna’s brunch is, so far, the best I’ve had in Barcelona. The Hollandaise sauce was impeccably velvety, and the eggs Benedict split and bled in a way that felt almost miraculous. The toppings are more than generous. The bread had a distinctly homemade crunch, far removed from anything artificial. The mushroom and egg toast came with a tartar-style sauce that elevated the entire dish (and, quite frankly, my day).
The coffee also deserves a mention. I was genuinely surprised by how good the oat milk cappuccino was, and let’s be honest, oat milk coffee doesn’t always deliver.
As promised, a note on the staff: consistently kind, and more importantly, genuinely cheerful, even when the place was full.
I’ll definitely be coming back regularly for that oat milk cappuccino.

We found this place because it was near our hotel and what a lovely find. The food was delicious and plentiful. They have food coffee, mimosas and other fresh beverages for breakfast/brunch. We had a large group of 6 and they were able to accommodate. The service was quick, friendly and the price was well worth everything we had. We had French toast, eggs Benedict, pancakes and the chicken sandwich - we couldn’t find any pics so it’s the only one I’m posting. The wait staff is lovely. Don’t miss going here if you’re in the area - definitely worth the trip.

Sooooo yummy. The cafe is super cute inside and outside. The staff were all very friendly and nice to chat with. I had an iced latte and really enjoyed it. The turkish eggs were great. The french toast was also very yummy, maybe could have just used a little more syrup. Loved it all! Would totally recommend

This small brunch spot is perfect. Menu has enough options for anyone, service time can vary though wasn’t too high for me. Good ambiance, not too loud, you can easily talk. The food is great, the photos speak for themselves.

Great coffee, delicious brunch dishes. The gluten free bread is tasty and the veggies are so fresh. Solid brunch spot. Best cortado of my trip so far.

My family and I were in Spain and Portugal for a whole month and I can say with full sincerity that this was the number one restaurant we went to. A lot of the other restaurants and cafes give little food for such high prices which leaves you hungry and in search for another restaurant. This place was the first restaurant we went to that left us saying “we’re so full.” The food was magnificent (I recommend the Eggs Benedict but I’m biased for some good eggs 😋) and our waiter, Henjie, was absolutely marvelous. Everyone here is so incredibly nice and the atmosphere is amazing. I love you Henjie!!! You made our brunch an amazing experience 🫶🫶🫶

What a lovely lunch. We sat overlooking the park on a beautiful Barcelona afternoon and everything about the experience felt relaxed and easy.
The mushroom toast was outstanding. The mushrooms were rich and savory, and the sun-dried tomatoes were used with a surprisingly light touch.. just enough to add brightness and depth without taking over the dish. One of those simple plates that is much better than it has any right to be.
A special thank you to Noel, who took such wonderful care of us throughout the meal. Warm, attentive, and genuinely kind.. the kind of service that makes you want to linger a little longer.
We’ll absolutely be back.

A wide variety of classic brunch options including both American and typical Spanish meals.
Very friendly and helpful staff who speak English. They will help you store luggage if needed.
The American-style pancakes are large, fluffy and thick - I would estimate at least 2-3cm tall. The full American brunch is an enormous portion perfect to share. The scrambled eggs are cooked so that they are not at all runny on the outside, but when you cut into them they are warm and gooey. The bacon is cut in thick slices (more English style than American style). The sausages are slightly sweet.
The Acai bowl is based around a sorbet of Acai, with plenty of fresh fruit and coconut shavings on top. The Acaï melts quite quickly around the edges so I would recommend eating from the outside of the bowl inwards.
The tea/coffee/matcha is unsweetened. There is brown sugar available on the table.
Free tap water.

We came for breakfast two days in a row because we were delighted with the food, the atmosphere and the staff. The food tastes great and looks beautiful. Coffee and hot chocolate completed the impression. Thanks to Fernando who wowed us with a little piece of art on the drinks. We were especially impressed by John, who made an effort to ensure that we were served with smile and kind words.

Such a cute place! It’s not cheap BUT the food is very very good. You need to try the patacones and the French toast, they are delicious and in the case of the French toast I ordered just half a portion and it was more than enough. The coffee is also DELICIOUS, and they have an EPIC café bombón. My Cuban heart melted at how good it was! 😮💨💖

We dined at Belliny all three days of our trip because the food and service was that good! It was right outside our accommodation so it was even more perfect. The place was nicely decorated and the service is amazing. They are closed here on Tuesday but it was our last day so when they told us they are open at a different location we made the trip over there! The Benedict’s were amazing as well as those chocolate pancakes and the mimosas and sangria! Thankyou Belliny

Lovely food, and nice staff. The vibe outside was cozy, though I think the vibe of sitting inside would make a difference for my rating, since you sit close to the road outside.
We would recommend booking a table if you plan to come. We came in on a Sunday for brunch, and everything was fully booked, but still got to sit outside. Even though they were really busy, the staff was nice and reassuring.
Be aware that it is a 10% fee for sitting outside.
They have good food, okay coffee (esthetically i was really pretty though it didn't taste of that much), and really sweet staff. So we would recommend going to this place if you are nearby.
Louisa Ess★★★★★
Such a cute little café! I loved the handmade designs on the drinks—they were so pretty and made everything feel extra special. The breakfast was really filling too. The staff were lovely, and the whole place had a really relaxed, welcoming vibe. Definitely worth a visit, and I’ll be coming back!

You just have to visit this Brunch spot if your visiting Barcelona. Everything about this place was perfect..Despite not having a reservation we were warmly welcomed with the previso that we only had one hour which was not a problem for us and we soon realised why we only had one hour. International Women's Day was being celebrated and the staff were very kind in looking after my wife with an appropriately decorated cappuccino. Service was as good as I have come across and the food was top drawer. Really tasty and so well presented, I just wish I lived a little closer as I would definitely be a regular here..5 stars well justified.

The food was super yummy and decorative. The drinks were delicious, we all got smoothies which came out so cute and decorative. My friend ordered a latte and it was the cutest thing ever. However, my friend is vegan and ordered the vegan burger which ended up not being vegan at all. She was not happy with the vegan food options and for that reason I knocked off a star but we loved our food.

Lovely brunch spot in Barcelona!
I had Eggs Benedict, Shakshouka, and pancakes. everything was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The place has a calm, cozy vibe that makes it perfect for a relaxed breakfast or brunch. Friendly service and a very pleasant atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit!

Amazing cafe in Barcelona. Boutique vibe and unbelievable chef creations for a brunch that will surpass others. Delicious smoothies and rich espresso. Staff was very attentive and kind. My only criticism was felt pressure to tip higher percentages when paying. The server specifically pointed out the higher % amounts and watched. It was odd. Will come back though as food was worth it

We had the absolute best kind of brunch. The food was absolutely delicious! This is one of those popular brunch spots in Barcelona so we had to wait for about 5-8mins as they were full. However once we got in, it took a bit of time for the servers to get our orders since it was busy. The food came out super quick. I had the classic bennie with the black corn waffle and I added pulled pork. Hubby had the B&C burrito with pulled pork, absolutely delicious. Portions are big, we could have literally shared one meal. For drinks we had the matcha latte and dirty chai latte. I really think I’ll be going back tomorrow for the carrot cupcake!

went this time with my darling Genevieve! I travelled here last year to a different location - but the service is excellent and equal. The food is so so so delicious, and I appreciate the lengths the went to give my dog the best comfort! She got water, chicken with cinnamon, and nice comfy seat for her to rest! Will come back, I recommend everyone to go and without dogs or with is very relaxing. Great air conditioning and WiFi, good space to take a break from the city
Z B★★★★☆
It was our first time here and we absolutely loved it. The place is really cute, the food and drinks are amazing. The service is great. It's a fancier place and bit on the pricier side, but you get big portions, so it pays off.
I only have one thing to critize and that is that regular pancakes with nothing but Nutella cost more than the ones on the menu, bc they take the special pancakes' price and add "+Nutella", which is crazy in my opinion, as you get charged for sth you didn't get.

Absolutely incredible brunch experience! The chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries was so good—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. But the highlight for me was the green smoothie. It was incredibly fresh, delicious, and packed with that healthy, refreshing taste you want from a good smoothie.

I recently enjoyed a wonderful breakfast experience that stood out both for its delicious food and exceptional service.
The breakfast was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor, with a great variety of options that catered to different tastes. Everything was served quickly and beautifully presented, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
What truly made the visit memorable was the outstanding service provided by Natalia. She was attentive, friendly, and very professional throughout the entire time. Natalia made sure everything was perfect, checked in at the right moments, and created a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Overall, it was a fantastic start to the day, combining excellent food with truly exemplary service. I would definitely return and highly recommend it.

Long story short, it is my 4th time at this place, which means it is great! The location is easy to find, stuff is very friendly and always there for you, asking how's everything. The food is excellent: good variety of dishes, pleasant combinations of ingredients and a perfect balance of flavours. Just keepin mind: the food is so filling that you only feel hungry in the evening (I think this is a big advantage). I highly recommend visiting!

We spent the week in Barcelona and found this gem of a restaurant. We had Tim as a server every morning. He was fantastic! Very friendly, accommodating and always greeted us with a smile. I went to Breakfast Club Brunch Barcelona with a group of friends for brunch, and overall the experience was a bit mixed. When we arrived, the atmosphere felt quite chaotic. The staff were clearly overwhelmed and running around, which made the service feel disorganized. We had to wait a while before getting our table, even though it wasn’t extremely busy.
Once seated, we noticed that the table was quite small for four people, making it a little uncomfortable, especially once the food and drinks arrived. Speaking of drinks, they were fine nothing exceptional, but decent and enjoyable.
For food, I ordered the eggs Benedict. They were okay, but honestly nothing memorable. I’ve had much better and tastier versions elsewhere, especially considering the reputation of the place. The vegetables that came with the dish were undercooked, which was disappointing and took away from the overall plate.
In the end, the experience wasn’t bad, but it didn’t fully meet expectations. The place has potential, but better organization, more attentive service, and some improvements in food quality would make a big difference. Given the hype around this spot, I expected more.

Great breakfast place. We were seated immediately (just a 1 minute wait on a Sunday morning) with group of 3.
Eggs Benedict were tasty (local variant that i liked), great advocado toast as the 'el rancherito' toast with pulled pork.
Large portion and freshly made. Recommended

We had such a lovely brunch at Tranqui Brunch! 🥰 The place is super cute, with a beautiful terrace outside and a cozy, stylish interior. The staff and the owners were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. They took great care of us and gave us excellent recommendations.
We tried the Tunisian shakshuka (perfectly seasoned), the spinach & ricotta toast with avocado, the tomato & mozzarella toast with Serrano ham, and the French toast (huge slice of brioche topped with fresh red berries). We also loved the iced blueberry matcha and the smoothies.
Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. If you’re looking for a great brunch spot with delicious food and genuinely friendly service, I definitely recommend Tranqui Brunch! 💚

The food was amazing, so many options - the food is fresh and comes out quick. And most importantly is absolutely delicious :p
The service is fast and they are so attentive - the food is made with care the decorations are cute and trendy. My only “complaint” is it’s a bit of a tight squeeze but we fit perfectly inside and the staff make sure to accommodate for everyone. The food is also very affordable 🙂 Also has upstairs seating - although i do think it’s just one big table.
Overall an amazing experience lovely food, fantastic service, and a cozy atmosphere! A perfect start to the day!!

Little Fern Café was without a doubt our favorite spot in Barcelona for breakfast, brunch, and coffee. During our one-week stay, we came here twice—and even after the trip, it’s one of the places we still talk about.
The food is truly outstanding. The banana bread and the French toast were honestly the best I’ve ever had—no exaggeration. Both were perfectly balanced in flavor and texture, and you can really tell that a lot of care goes into the preparation.
The coffee is just as impressive. I’m quite picky when it comes to flat whites, but the one here was excellent—smooth, rich, and very well made.
What also makes this place special is the menu. It’s not your typical brunch offering—they have a variety of interesting international dishes, including Turkish eggs, which you don’t even easily find everywhere in Turkey. That alone says a lot about how unique and thoughtful their menu is.
The overall atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, making it a great place to start your day in Barcelona.
All in all, this is a must-visit spot if you’re in the city. Whether you’re into great coffee, high-quality brunch, or just memorable food experiences, Little Fern Café absolutely delivers.
Maximilian★★★★★
Exceptional attention to detail. The food was beautifully put together and the tastes were sublime.
Set your expectations high.
I had the Eggs Benny with a side of Avo. Every aspect of the dish was considered. The goldern turmeric hollandaise is no joke, the oyster mushroom is prepped by someone who knows how to entice every last ounce of umami from this noble shroom. The paprika dusting elevates the dish to comical heights - visually and sensorially.
I almost wish I’d never had it. How will I ever go back to normal?!
The flat white was also fantastic - but of course.
Staff were friendly and welcoming. Still thinking about the eggs. Perfect yokes.
The people next to me were raving about the kimchi pancakes for what it’s worth.
Jose Carballo★★★★★
Fourth day in Barcelona. Finally found a breakfast/brunch spot that hits right. We were helped by Julianna, who was super nice and welcoming. Their take on shashuka was delicious and artfully executed. The harissa eggs and salmon eggs Benedict were delicious as well. Their take on kimchi pancakes was also a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend Little Fern and these plates. Ask for Julianna !!!
Damian★★★★★
I had breakfast at Little Fern and it was really great.
We waited about 5 minutes for a table, which was pretty quick and totally worth it.
The food was fresh and tasty, but the French toast was the real star of the show.
It was soft, sweet, and so good that I almost forgot to share (sorry, not sorry 😄).
If breakfast had a superhero, this French toast would be wearing the cape!
Skye Guerreiro★★★★★
They said the vegan kimchi pancakes were good but qué exquisito!! Tiene mucho sabor! Every bite full of tantalising savoury flavours that never leave you bored. I paired it with the Ayurvedic tea.
Service very friendly. It gets busy, if you’re after a cosy pace I’d recommend a late brunch.
Tips for Choosing the Perfect Breakfast Spot
Navigating the culinary landscape of El Born requires a bit of insider knowledge to ensure you get the best experience for your money. The area is dense with restaurants, but not all of them are created equal, and the proximity to such a major landmark often leads to inflated prices. To help you eat like a local and avoid disappointment, we have compiled some essential strategies for selecting your morning meal.
1. Follow the Local Schedule
Spanish breakfast culture differs significantly from Northern Europe or America. Locals typically eat light early in the morning, often just a coffee and a pastry standing at the bar, and then have a larger mid-morning meal around 11:00 AM. If you want to experience the true local vibe, visit a traditional bar early for a quick café con leche, then schedule your "brunch" for later in the morning when the kitchens are in full swing.
2. Look for "Desayuno de Tenedor"
If you want a savory, authentic start to your day, look for restaurants advertising a "fork breakfast." This is a hearty, traditional meal that often includes items like huevos rotos (broken eggs over potatoes), butifarra (Catalan sausage), or tripe. It is the fuel that workers and locals use to start a long day, and it offers a much more cultural experience than a standard croissant.
3. Check the Coffee Sourcing
Barcelona has experienced a specialty coffee revolution in recent years. The best cafes will proudly display the name of their local roaster, such as Nomad, Right Side, or Three Marks. If a menu simply says "coffee" without detail, it is often a sign of lower quality. For espresso drinks or a flat white, stick to the specialty cafes on the list to ensure the beans are freshly roasted and properly extracted.
4. Beware of the "Menu with Photo" Trap
A general rule of thumb in El Born is to be wary of restaurants that display large, glossy photographs of their food on placards outside the door. These are almost exclusively aimed at tourists and often feature microwaved or frozen ingredients. Authentic local spots rarely need to show you a picture of a fried egg; their reputation and the crowd of locals inside speak for themselves.
5. Check for the "Ivy" Factor
While aesthetics aren’t everything, the state of a café’s exterior often reflects the care taken in the kitchen. If a place has dead plants, dirty windows, or peeling paint, it might indicate a lack of attention to detail. Conversely, the best brunch spots in El Born often have beautiful, inviting interiors that match the quality of the food on the plate.
6. Make a Reservation for Weekend Brunch
El Born is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Barcelona for both tourists and locals. If you have your heart set on a specific trendy brunch spot on a Saturday or Sunday, do not expect to just walk in. The best tables fill up quickly, often with waiting lists of over an hour. A quick phone call or online booking the day before can save you from a hungry wait on the cobblestones.
The area around Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is a true food lover’s paradise, offering a perfect blend of history and modern gastronomy. Whether you choose a historic bar that has been serving the neighborhood for a hundred years or a new-wave café pushing the boundaries of brunch, you are guaranteed a memorable meal.
