15 Best Sushi Spots in Marseille

Marseille’s relationship with the sea defines its character, and that deep maritime culture translates directly to the plate. Unlike the butter-heavy traditions of northern France, Provençal cooking leans on olive oil, fresh herbs, and the daily catch brought into the Vieux-Port.

For sushi lovers, this means access to some of the freshest Mediterranean fish, combined with a distinctly French approach to dining. Finding exceptional Japanese cuisine in this bustling port city is less about stumbling upon a tourist trap and more about knowing where locals go for precise knife work and high-quality rice.

The city has seen a culinary evolution over the last decade, moving from basic “maki” joints to sophisticated omakase experiences. Whether you are looking for a quick lunch in the 6th arrondissement or a refined dinner near the Corniche, Marseille offers a surprising depth of options.

The best sushi spots here understand that the ingredients are the star. Chefs often source local sea bream and red mullet to complement imported tuna and salmon, creating a unique fusion of Japanese technique and Mediterranean terroir. This blend of local sourcing and international standards sets the Marseille sushi scene apart from other French cities.

Navigating the dining landscape requires a bit of local insight. Many of the top establishments are small, intimate spaces that prioritize quality over volume, meaning reservations are often essential. Additionally, the French dining schedule—with dinner service starting later than in many other countries—means you can enjoy a leisurely meal without feeling rushed.

In this guide, we have curated a selection of venues that consistently deliver excellence in freshness, atmosphere, and authenticity. We have considered not just the raw fish, but the quality of the sushi rice, the balance of flavors, and the overall hospitality. This ensures that whether you are a purist or an adventurous eater, you will find a spot that satisfies your craving.

From hidden gems tucked away on side streets to elegant establishments with views of the Mediterranean, these are the places that define the current sushi culture in the Phocaean City. Prepare to explore a side of Marseille’s culinary scene that goes far beyond bouillabaisse and pastis.

Very tasty and quality food, staff were very friendly and attentive for dine in experience. Self order screen was helpful for looking at choices - very generous serving sizes. The dessert sushi was a real treat! Will have to come back and try more.

I have to highlight that the service here was amazing and super attentive, we were happily surprised ! Plus the food it’s ready in matter of minutes, great if you’re starving like we were. They have a big variety of options and the quality it’s ok to go with friends and have a good time. Also, a nice pet friendly terrace.

I never get tired of eating in this place, I think this is maybe my 6th time and the food is still amazing, I recommend it without any hesitation, it’s the only place that I visited more than once in all Marseille. P.S: I only visit Baille branch so I’m not sure about the quality of food in other branches.
Debbie Albers★★★☆☆
Bit if a sketchy area, we Ubered there. Not traditional sushi as we were hoping. More fried rolls than not.
Soha Karnib★★★☆☆
Well to start with, they delivered the sushi without chopsticks!! Which was a major disappointment for us. Second we ordered more than 30 pieces, so obviously not for 1 person, and they sent a tiny ginger with a tiny soya sauce. Sushies were okay, service needs to be improved

Benoit Jansen-Reynaud★★★★★
Last night we had the pleasure of dining at YUME Sushi, and it turned out to be a truly wonderful find. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly relax and know you’re in good hands. The service was excellent throughout the evening: attentive, friendly, and genuinely caring without ever feeling intrusive. And then came the sushi… beautifully fresh, expertly prepared, and full of flavor. Each bite reflected quality ingredients and real attention to detail. It’s the kind of meal where you pause for a second just to appreciate how good it is. What made the experience even better was the value. For the level of quality, service, and overall experience, it felt more than fair. All in all, a fantastic experience from start to finish. We highly recommend YUME Sushi and will definitely be returning.

Very nice surprise ! Arrived late in Marseille so the time to checking I didn’t want to go too far and walked to this place, it does not look like great from outside but the surprise is in the food. Very tasty and fresh, very friendly service. The quality of the fish is good and the rice was nicely cooked !

The best sushi in Town!! During our France trip, we decided to try this place, basically attracted by the name. The place is very clean, and the sushi is fresh and amazing. What can we say about the location?! If you know who Naruto is, you cannot skip this restaurant.

Good rolls and sushi. We were here as tourists and the salmon was fresh tasty and beautiful. The rolls are balanced, there is as much fish inside as you need. And the price is surprisingly good. Violeta Milanovic★★★★☆
Quite nice food, but (I suppose due to the busyness of the restaurant and/or not having enough staff) our dinner was a bit chaotic with some orders coming by mistake to our table. In general it’s a nice and fancy place, the prices are not as high as I expected since the place looks nice. But it was quite loud and therefore overwhelming at times. Would recommend maybe during a less busy hour.
Francois Rodriguez★★★★★
A great venue for the food variety, decoration, inside water canal relaxing background. The service is casual, and efficient.

Amazing place, environment and food. Kind helpful stuff. We came for a job event. Everybody happy. We’ve ordered a bit of everything and all was meticulous prepared. Super recommend.

Really love the vibe of this restaurant. So cute and calm. Perfect dinner date spot. The food is super good. Vegan options available too. The waiters are super nice and friendly.
Kevin Na★★☆☆☆
Le Yen use to be a famous place of Asian specialities in Marseille. Years have passed and unfortunately the qualities of dishes also. A soup miso from an instant bag, some frozen spring roll, a tofu tasteless... not sure if its the fact that we had mostly vegetarian option but come on, for the price you guys charged, we don't expect frozen spring roll. That's annoying and very disappointing. With the level of food quality in Marseille, le Yen is now from far overrated and you can definitely find better place. Atmosphere and Service were good tho.

Honestly the food is not that great. Ate at a discount but at full priced I would’ve been very disappointed. The tuna tataki was near inedible. The makis and sushi were ok. Lot of rice, aioli on top of every single thing made it ok to eat. It’s ok to miss this one. However service was great, and provided some sake and mochi as an apology for the bad plate

I ate here a few weeks ago on my first night in Marseille! The staff were super friendly and welcoming. They really make sure that your experience is amazing. And I haven’t even mentioned the food yet, but it was super delicious 🥹🥹This might just be the best ramen restaurant in Marseille
Meritta Mehuka-Behluli★★★★★
Absolutely — here’s a glowing but still classy review that sounds genuine rather than exaggerated: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely exceptional! From the moment we arrived, everything was perfect. The food was simply outstanding beautifully presented, full of flavour, fresh, and cooked to perfection. You can genuinely taste the quality and care that goes into every dish. The atmosphere is just as wonderful: warm, elegant and welcoming, with the perfect Vieux-Port Marseille vibe. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy your meal and immediately want to come back. A special mention to the staff, who were incredibly polite, attentive and professional throughout our visit. Friendly without being intrusive, always smiling and making sure we had everything we needed. That level of hospitality really makes a difference. Excellent food, beautiful ambiance and impeccable service honestly one of those restaurants that deserves every one of its five stars. A wonderful experience from beginning to end, and definitely a place I would recommend without hesitation. We will absolutely be back! ❤️
Rory Adendorff★★★★★
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely incredible! The ramen was the freshest and most flavorful I’ve ever had. Our host, Ying, was so warm and welcoming, and the whole experience felt thoughtful and genuine. The mochi and drinks were outstanding too (the matcha is a must-try!). We came last week and came back again because it was just that good. A new gem. Highly recommended! 🍜✨
Max Lehmer★★★★★
I had a great experience at Rice Street Vieux Port. The food was absolutely delicious – every dish was full of flavor and really well prepared. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality you get. One thing we especially appreciated was the atmosphere. Compared to some of the neighboring restaurants, it was much calmer and quieter, without all the loud chatter, which made the meal even more enjoyable. The service was wonderful as well. Everyone was very kind, attentive, and welcoming throughout our visit. Highly recommended if you're looking for excellent food, friendly service, and a more relaxed dining experience in the Vieux Port area. 😊
Jacob Rice★★★★★
It was a cold night and I was looking for hot ramen to warm me up! I decided to go to this place hoping for the best... and I was incredibly impressed. I had just been to Japan earlier this year and this was as close as one could get!! If you’re wondering where to get ramen… go here!!! There’s plenty of seating, inside and outside, and the vibes are good here. The server was very friendly and helpful. I loved it here. I will go back the next time I want a hot bowl of delicious ramen!!

best quality sushi - all you eat. good price.. nice area in marseille!
Chris Ibrahim★☆☆☆☆
There’s no raw tuna, and around 70% of the choices contain chicken. It’s too expensive considering there are only about 20 different options, and the pieces with raw salmon are maybe only 10% of the selection. For this food, I would pay a maximum of €10.

Honestly, go for it without hesitation! The sushi is excellent, a real treat. The setting is warm, the atmosphere is chill, and the waitress is very pleasant. I recommend it 1000%! 🍣⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A very good experience! The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which is a real pleasure. The setting is lovely with nice decor. The food was really good, and the fact that it's halal is a definite plus. You order directly with a tablet, and it's all-you-can-eat for €35, so frankly, the value for money is excellent. I highly recommend it!
Fanny - Foodguidemarseille★★★★★
At OUDZO Sushi, forget the classic buffet. Here, it's a unique and original concept: each table has its own touchscreen tablet for ordering. "ALL YOU CAN EAT!" You select your dishes directly from the screen, and a new order can be placed every 15 minutes, preventing waste while offering a truly all-you-can-eat experience. The restaurant's biggest strength? The quality of the ingredients and transparency. Thanks to the open kitchen, you can watch the team prepare each order live. Sushi, maki, California rolls, signature creations, and hot dishes are made to order, right after you place your order, to guarantee maximum freshness and flavor. The menu is also constantly evolving, with new creations and original recipes developed by the team regularly. Their new summer offering: the Caesar Sushi. An incredibly delicious creation combining crispy chicken, avocado, Parmesan cheese, Caesar dressing, and sushi rice. And if you prefer to enjoy it all at home, they also offer takeout. Delivery is already available on Uber Eats, and a dedicated website is currently being developed to make ordering even easier!

Very rude and unprofessional service. We arrived as a family of seven, waited to be seated, but no staff came, even though the restaurant was almost empty. When we finally sat down, the waiter told us they were “not accepting us” and then said it was because we didn’t wait to be seated — despite no one acknowledging us at all. Completely unwelcoming attitude and no interest in serving customers. Not recommended.

Felt like this place didn't provide quality food or service. Got a salmon bowl and it tasted barely edible. The rice was cold, hard, and stale. The salmon tasted so cured, definitely not poke. Service was slow - and I'm not sure why because scooping rice, fish, and avocado into a bowl doesn't seem like it takes much effort. I had to order first, wait for my food to be made, and then be able to pay. They ran out of sesame so they subbed it with crispy onions.

Essential Tips for Enjoying Sushi in Marseille

To make the most of your culinary journey through Marseille’s Japanese dining scene, it helps to understand the local nuances. Dining here differs slightly from both Tokyo and Paris, blending the relaxed Mediterranean pace with high culinary standards.

The following tips will ensure you have a seamless and delicious experience, whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned local looking to refine your approach.

1). Prioritize Freshness Over Volume

In Marseille, the best sushi is often found in smaller establishments that prepare a limited number of covers per night. Avoid all-you-can-eat buffets if your goal is quality. Look for menus that change seasonally or feature a “catch of the day” sushi option, indicating the chef is using fresh market ingredients rather than frozen stock.

2). Master the Reservation Game

The most popular spots, especially those with limited counter seating, book up days or sometimes weeks in advance. Do not expect to walk into a top-tier sushi bar on a Friday or Saturday night. Call ahead or use online booking platforms early in the week to secure your spot, particularly if you want to sit at the bar and watch the chef work.

3). Embrace the Local Catch

While salmon and tuna are staples, do not be afraid to try sushi made with Mediterranean fish. Red mullet (rouget), sea bream (daurade), and even local squid can offer a spectacular flavor profile that you won’t find elsewhere. Asking the chef for their “recommendation of the moment” often unlocks the best the sea has to offer that day.

4). Understand the Timing

French dining culture operates on a later schedule. While lunch service is usually strict (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM), dinner rarely gets busy before 8:00 PM. Arriving at 7:00 PM might mean dining alone, while arriving at 9:00 PM ensures a vibrant atmosphere. Plan your day accordingly to match the local rhythm.

5). Respect the “Omakase” Experience

If you are dining at a high-end counter, consider trusting the chef with an omakase (chef’s choice) menu. This is the best way to experience the pinnacle of the chef’s skill. Be prepared for a slower pace, and avoid dousing high-quality nigiri in excessive soy sauce; a light touch respects the craftsmanship and the delicate flavor of the fish.

Marseille’s culinary identity is a testament to its role as a cultural crossroads. The ability to sit in a modern dining room in the Old Port and eat sushi prepared with techniques from Tokyo, using fish caught in the Calanques, is a uniquely Marseille experience. It proves that the city’s gastronomy is not stuck in the past but is constantly evolving.

Exploring these sushi spots offers a refreshing counterpoint to the heavier, richer fare often associated with Provençal cuisine. It is a lighter, more delicate way to engage with the Mediterranean diet. So, venture beyond the expected, book a table, and discover why Marseille is quietly becoming a destination for serious sushi enthusiasts in the South of France.
