15 Best Affordable Restaurants in Marseille

Marseille has a reputation for being one of the most vibrant and culturally rich cities on the French Mediterranean. It is a place where North African traditions, Provençal ingredients, and a bustling maritime spirit collide on the plate. While the city certainly has its fair share of upscale dining rooms, the true soul of Marseille is found in its casual, affordable eateries where locals line up for a taste of home.

Eating well in this city does not require a hefty budget or a formal reservation. From the historic streets of Le Panier to the sun-drenched terraces near the Vieux-Port, affordable meals are everywhere if you know where to look. The key is to follow the locals, step away from the heavily touristed docks, and embrace the diverse flavors that define this multicultural port.

The local dining scene is dominated by fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas, and the aromatic spices of the Maghreb. You can easily find a hearty couscous, a perfectly blistered pizza, or a plate of crispy panisse for just a few euros. These dishes are not just meals; they are a reflection of the city’s working-class roots and its history as a melting pot of cultures.

When searching for value, prioritize lunchtime “formules” which often include a starter and a main course or a main course and dessert for a fixed, low price. Dinner tends to be a slightly pricier affair, but many of the city’s best pizzerias and couscous spots keep their prices steady all day. Paying in cash can sometimes unlock a small discount or a friendlier smile at family-run establishments.

This guide focuses on places that offer exceptional value without sacrificing flavor or atmosphere. You won’t find fast-food chains or bland tourist traps here; instead, you will discover family-run institutions, hidden backstreet bistros, and bustling markets stalls that have stood the test of time. These are the spots where you can eat like a true Marseillais for under €20 per person.

To help you navigate the city’s sprawling culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the best spots that balance price, portion size, and quality. Whether you are craving a steaming bowl of fish soup, a crunchy falafel wrap, or a classic pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, there is a budget-friendly table waiting for you.

Service was fast and net. The coffee was very good!! I don’t be so satisfied with the wrap!! But maybe it was not in my taste!!

Super enjoyable breakfast 😘 Cute and very delicious "Focaccina du jour (≈ mini-Focaccia of the day)" which they can warm up for you, and a nice and rich but not too heavy "chocolat chaud (= hot chocolate)" ✨️ Lovely indoor and outdoor sitting, I sat outside to soak in the life and people passing by 😚 Excellent and friendly service, definitely recommend visiting for a wonderful experience, merci!!!

This was my favorite coffee shop in Marseille. Our barista was a gentlemen who didn’t make the language barrier feel awkward. Our macchiato and lattes were fantastic of course. The star of the show is their focaccia and babka. You can’t go wrong with any choice of flavors. Seek this place out!!
Chris Fung★★★★★
Hot spot for a local vibe experience!! Great staff and delicious fare, we chose the pick 3,,,focaccia+drink+dessert for 9.50!!!! Food was delicious and perfect temperature!! We had Maison Charlie at the foot of our rental and the location cannot be beat!!!! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience! Highly recommend

This little lunch cafe served a fabulous sandwich, drink, and dessert for a very reasonable price. The owners work here, and they named the restaurant after their daughter. Great value for tourists, and there are steps nearby where everyone sits with a view of the harbor (near Hotel DeVille). Many locals enjoy this restaurant too.

Lamb with Couscous was so tender. And the soup that came with it so tasty. We ordered Chicken Tajine and it was too much food we have to ‘emporter’ (takeaway). The server did warn us…too much food when we were ordering but we got carried away! Chicken literally melts in your mouth and their baguette so good! That’s lunch for us the next day…well worth it for €22 total. Highly recommended.
Max Ratliff★★★★★
Being authentic goes a long way! The food was sincerely incredible and unlike anything I’ve experienced. Undisputed best chicken and couscous I’ve ever eaten. This is a must if you’re in Marseille. We couldn’t finish our meal because it was so filling but nobody does and they know that! Sit back and enjoy how unique this place is!
Katy★★★★★
C’est magnifique! We had lunch here today and the food was delicious (vegetarian starters and cous cous legumes, baklava and tea), the service was perfect and very friendly, and it cost so little for the huge portions! 100% recommend!

Perhaps one of the best tagines I’ve ever had in my life! Everything is melt in your mouth delicious. Flavors are bold and rich. They have amazing couscous as well. Harissa is legit, served with olive oil. The staff are extremely busy as it’s a bustling place, but still manage to be kind and attentive. Mint tea at the end was the perfect sweet touch. An unforgettable lunch.

Very delicious Tunisian food place. We found the restaurant easily. We were seated immediately. The service was super fast. After ordering we did not even wait 5 min for our food to arrive. It was delicious. We had Tajin and Couscous. The mint tea was so delicious that we ordered 4 times.

Amazing cuisine, very delicious n presentable. We went for a brunch. The waffle with two different toppings was amazing. It is a small place inside and there were chairs outside with blankets as well. A must try place if you are in Marseille.

Everything was very fresh and delicious. The service was particularly very good. They have got English menu too. People were very polite and asking if everything was fine. Small gestures like these make them the highest rated brunch place of Marseille.

Delicious, authentic tapas, great sangria and a truly mind blowing desert! We’ve been served very quickly, owner was very kind and friendly. If you are looking for a place to eat in Marseille and you like tapas then this the one to go to. We’ll definitely come back again for more delicious tapas!
Peeth Eeckhoudt★☆☆☆☆
This is my first 1 point in a long time. Do NOT go there... place doesn't smell well, food is terrible, badly refrigated frozen food, not even fresh. The responsible is on its martphone all the time and doesn't care about customers. This place was empty, says it all? Ny wife wanted tapa's. By the way, there was no wine, only sangria. DO NOT GO THERE!!!
John Wylde (Liverpooljohn)★☆☆☆☆
What in the name of Spanish appetizers is going on here? This has to be the worst tapas I have ever exeperienced. Four of us booked a table, it was early about 6:30 and the place was empty, however we were the only diners the whole evening and I cant say I'm surprised. From the moment I saw the uniformly diced fruit in the sangria I was reminded that a certain Gerrman discount supermarket, popular throughout europe sells packets of frozen sangria fruit of similar apperance. Sadly the comparison with said supermarket didn't end there. The croquettes, the squid, the patatas all evoked memories of what i could buy in the freezer sections back home. How this can be rated as one of the best tapas bars in Marseille is beyond me. Yet the dreadfulness doesn't end there, added to the uninspiring food is the baffling drinks policy. White wine can only be bought by the glass, red wine by the bottle and its expensive to boot! Chuck in the most disinterested maitre to have ever embraced the hospitality sector and you have the perfect recipe for an evening of utter gloom. This state of purgatory was brought to an end with the presentation of a bill which was undecipherable but which came to €117 - we paid but only to release us from this glimpse of hell. Just before we left at 9:30 an American couple came in but were turned away because he "was closing in half an hour". He could afford to turn them away, hed just rinsed us good and proper. It will be interesting to see how many great reviews follow this one

Cozy, authentic restaurant with welcoming atmosphere and very sympatique personnel! But lat importantly the food is delicious!! The portions are big but feel light and rich, and leave just enough space for the extraordinary dessert! Definitely will return once I’m back in the city.

The tajine d’agneau aux pruneaux is juicy and full of flavor. It is perfect to have some baklava with mint tea after the dinner. Do take note that this hidden germ does not accept credit cards. Please prepare cash.

AMAZING!! We came here last night for dinner and immediately sat down ready to eat. The restaurant is authentic, tucked away in a side street, a short walk from the noise and chaos of the port. We sat outside and it was really peaceful. The meal itself was incredible and freshly made. I ordered the cous cous agneau. My boyfriend ordered the cous cous poulet. Both plates were a very good portion with lots of cous cous and veggies. The meat was very tender and my lamb fell apart perfectly. The flavours were amazing and everything was seasoned nicely. I also had the tea, which I really enjoyed. Perfect service with friendly staff. I would 100% recommend.

Probably one of the most authentic, genuine, tasty, well cooked food establishments I’ve been to in a long time. We had Royal couscous, chicken grilled with chips and salad, drinks and tiramisu takeaway. Nadia was a remains incredibly hospitable, friendly, obliging, and caring. The food was cooked fresh, tasty, my wife enjoyed her chips and chicken, and the couscous was absolutely amazing. Last couscous I tasted like this was in Marrakesh and that wasn’t close to the taste of this one. Cash only so they can keep the cost down, very very cheap, we paid €42 for two meals drinks, and dessert to take away. What are barking considering the quality of the food. Definitely recommend eating in this amazing place and getting to know Nadia
Paula Rosine Long★★★★★
Incredible! Best tagine of my life (we had the lamb and prune one) and the Gazelles Horn cookie was so good I had to order a second!! Thank you, Nadia!!

Great food! The chef if very friendly and helpful, we didn't quite understand the brunch formula from the board as we don't speak French, but we showed him a picture from the website of the meal we wanted - salmon sandwich with burrata - and he made it for us. It was delicious and overall an amazing experience! The coffee was great too 🙂

Picture this: Easter Monday, everything closed, we venture outside in coldish weather hoping to find any form of food. Supermarkets were also closed. We were losing hope. Then, a light: Diego was already working behind the counter to open up 1hr later. We did not know, and asked to sit down. He kindly accepted, prepared a nice breakfast with sweet and savory foods. It was amazing. Could not go again because of trip logistics, but I will make sure to pass by in the future, and would encourage to do the same!

Authentic Asian atmosphere, flavorful dishes, and a very warm owner made this a great find. The beef with onions and Korean chicken were both tasty, and the portions were perfectly sized for the very reasonable prices. A solid recommendation for anyone in Marseille looking for satisfying Asian cuisine. Merci Beaucoup!
Leonard Loacker★★★★☆
The food tastes absolutely delicious, but you should be prepared for the portions. They are LARGE. The service is also friendly, though the place does tend to get a bit crowded quickly as it’s quite small.

The food was delicious..!! Highly recommend if you are craving for an asian food while in Marseille
Vaishnavi Murugesan★★★★★
It is a small restaurant but the food and service is great! The atmosphere is homey and cozy. We went there for dinner on a rainy evening in marseille and left with a full tummy. Good vegetarian or vegan options also.

The place is amazing! We had wings, and raviolis for starters and for main - general tao chicken and bo bun with chicken. The food was presented in a very nice way! Portions are extremely satisfying. All dishes were super delicious, made with fresh ingredients. Its a very nice and affordable place with authentic food. The owners are lovely!😻 will definitely come back when in Marseille. ❤️ thank you for this wonderful experience!!!

Great service and it's going to be hard not to have a good time at this place. The DJ was really good, the drinks are good, the mood is there. Amazing experience.

Great place to visit in the evening. They served food which we missed because we got there late. The DJ was playing salsa type music and the dancefloor was very busy with couples and friends dancing. Really good positive friendly vibe and atmosphere.
Catarina Fernandes★☆☆☆☆
Desgusting place, the securities are super rude, the place smells like urine and they over charge the entrance for tourists.
Mihai Stroe★★★★★
Simple place but amazing atmosphere. Everyone was enjoying, dancing and having fun. Loved it and will return with pleasure!
Sølve Sanden Espedal★☆☆☆☆
One of the worst door experiences I’ve ever had. We were two well-dressed, sober guys — respectful and patient — and the bouncers just completely ignored us for no reason. Meanwhile, they let in a big group who clearly knew them and had an obvious connection to the door staff, skipping everyone else in line. It felt like obvious discrimination and shady favoritism. No explanation, no «sorry, we’re full» — just silence and disrespect. We stood there from 23:00 without any answer or acknowledgment. A trendy place is worthless if the staff picks who they like based on who they know or where they’re from. Total waste of time. Management should be ashamed of how guests are treated at the door.

Good and fresh food, affordable and filling. Pretty generous with the guacamole. We only realized afterwards, but Tabasco is also readily available for those who want it. Friendly and fast service. Not a lot of seating, but some indoors and some outdoors. Small but cute toilet.

I went here several times over a few days and every one was great. The guy at the register is very friendly and welcoming. They have a simple menu that they do very well. I got the quesadilla and burrito several times. To mix things up, ask for some spice!

Great and quick service. They guy at the counter was really nice and friendly. The atmosphere is good. The prices are cheap and affordable. they have every dish’s vegetarian option but it does not come with any replacement protein. If you are looking for a quick and cheap lunch or dinner option, I recommend it. But if you are looking for top class Mexican food, this is not your place.

Great food and great service!! We ate here last night and really enjoyed our meal. We arrived at the restaurant and got seated outside pretty quickly. There were a lot of tables but the service was still excellent and we got our drinks fast. The food didn't take too long and tasted amazing. We opted for the formule menu Starter, Main and Dessert for 29€ really good price. I ordered the burrata starter and the lamb main. My boyfriend ordered the salmon starter and salmon main. My starter tasted amazing. The pesto seemed fresh and I really enjoyed it. The lamb main was cooked perfectly and was really tender. For dessert we both had tiramisu. Super yummy. Overall the restaurant was excellent. I normally feel wary of set menus because I assume the portions will the smaller or the food won't be to the best standard, but this place was excellent and very well priced for what we received. As you can see from the photo of our empty plates, we had a great experience. Our waitress was really friendly and joked with us about a photo i showed her... thank you for making our last night in Marseille funny and enjoyable!
A B★★★★★
This dish was excellent from start to finish. The veal schnitzel was generously sized, beautifully crisp, and evenly browned, with a juicy interior that didn’t feel greasy. Most importantly the veal schnitzel was pink. The shavings of Parmesan on top added a great savory kick without overpowering the meat. The fries were hot and properly crunchy on the outside, fluffy inside, and the fresh side salad brought a nice balance and lightness to the plate. A squeeze of lemon tied everything together and lifted the flavors. Overall: hearty, well-executed comfort food with a slightly elevated touch. I’d happily order it again.
leïla r.★★☆☆☆
I have a very mixed review regarding this restaurant. The food itself overall was very good, the meats were absolutely delicious and the dishes were well. We did have a little mishap where one of the meat dishes was a bit raw but they quickly brought us a new one and fixed the issue quickly. The desserts were also absolutely delicious and delightful. They also have a short but nice cocktail menu, the drinks were very nice, I really like their S*x on the beach cocktail. The restaurant is very well located, very close and near the Vieux Port. The one and only thing (that unfortunately made everything a bit sour, I would complain about would be the staff and the service. While some of the waiters were very nice, some were borderline very rude and straight up disrespectful. They were being very aggressive and very assertive, urging us to order very quickly and talking a in quite a very abrasive manner. We felt a bit unwanted/not welcomed and bit weird because of it, almost all our interactions with the staff felt very awkward and uncomfortable even though we were paying customers who were ready to order and eat a lot. Not to mention, the wait was incredibly long, and the manager was just as disrespectful and unfriendly as the staff he manages. If it wasn’t for the food being good and delicious, we would have most definitely left the second we were badly talked to. The whole experience would have been so much nicer and better, had the staff been a little more patient, nicer and friendly. I personally wouldn’t go back there despite the food. It’s an absolute shame.
Diana Bara★★★★★
Loved the food here. I had the 3 set course meal at 24€ and a glass of wine. The food was delicious, the rose wine wasn’t really of my liking. The restaurant is on the higher range of prices but it’s easy to understand why as it’s super central. The staff were really nice and welcoming as well. I just wish I was seated on the lovely outdoor terrace however it was raining that evening and there were no more seats outdoors. Loved it here overall and would totally recommend!
Angela Bertrand★★★★★
My husband and I had the Entré + Plat + +Dessert for 20€ and I think it’s cheap for the delicious food and excellent service. I ordered quiche Lorraine (which I’ve never tried before) and I loved it! It was a great way to start! The fish was perfectly cooked and the risotto was made in heaven. Husband had the 1/2 chicken with potatoes and I can still remember the taste of that sauce, really good! About the dessert, I mostly don’t like chocolate but I went for it and it was delicious, the texture is very good. The service is excellent, they’re making sure you have bread and water. This place is a must!

I just ate here, and it’s the most heartfelt meal I’ve had during my travels. It’s simple, but there’s something about it that made me smile throughout the whole meal. Come without expectations — if you’re looking for something fancy or exciting, this might not be for you. Good burgers, amazing fries. Good and super friendly staff. Terrace outside is lovely, there’s a light breeze and plenty of shade. Toilet is clean. Would come again!

Great burger place with a homey, local vibe. Catered well to gluten free dietary needs, coeliac ate here with no problems. Menu had some French flavours we don’t have at home such as Roquefort cheese. Service was also great!

The burger and fries were excellent, and the staff were very friendly. I was surprised I was the only customer when I visited because the food was genuinely good. Definitely stop by if you’re in the area, you won’t regret it.

Super amazing staff and super quick services. The food was great and they had an amazing gluten free bun!
Mary Jo Martino★★★★★
Incredible burgers. Stopped in for dinner tonight and got the Le Provençal on a gluten free bun, and my fiancé got Le Rustique on a normal bun. I’m used to the crumbly cardboard tasting gluten free bread in America, so I was blown away by how incredible this bun was. Small, simple menu executed very well. Great vibe too.

Excellent traditional restaurant with a lively, authentic atmosphere. The grilled lamb was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with the gratin dauphinois and pepper sauce. The café gourmand was a fantastic way to sample several delicious homemade desserts, all with a great espresso. Friendly, efficient service and great value. A place I’d happily return to on my next visit to Marseille.

This a really welcoming bistro with a standard French menu. I had the Special of the day which was two chicken kababs, sautéed eggplant and a superb potato gratin. DELICIOUS! It was a good portion for a very reasonable price.

It feels like a family-run restaurant. The woman who served us was very friendly and attentive. They have a chalkboard with some really good recommendations. I’m not Italian, but it was one of the best Italian meals we’ve ever had. The dessert was amazing, and we were pleasantly surprised by the pizza dough bread and the free water. The lasagnas came with salads and were served on very cute plates. A 10 out of 10 place—I highly recommend it. One of the few truly good spots left.

I came here for dinner during a walk through the area and it felt like a cozy, relaxed spot. The terrace had a nice atmosphere and it was easy to just sit and take your time. The food was decent, with some dishes standing out more than others, but overall it was a pleasant stop.

Some of the best food I've had in France, the staff, the quality of food, everything was parfait. I can't wait to come back when we return to Marseilles. J'adore O'Provençal. ❤️

First time trying cambodian food and it was glorious! We enjoyed all the appetizers but the soup with porc lacqué was incredible, same as the takoyaki. This place is a true gem in Marseille, the servers are super welcoming and friendly! I strongly recommend giving this place a shot. I am pretty sure coming soon!
David Patton★★★★★
Super tasty food, reasonably priced and friendly staff in this cute little restaurant. We liked the complimentary bottle of tap water brought to the table upon arrival. There are plenty of vegan options too - yay!

Definitely a 5 stars from me! Pork spring rolls, beef noodle soup and Khmer stir fry with rice are all to die for. Friendly staff, clean and cute small place. Once again the food is to die for! (Also prices are cheaper for the city and portions were big) Must go if you are in the city

Tips for Eating on a Budget in Marseille

Navigating the food scene in Marseille is easy if you adopt the habits of the locals. The city is generous with its portions, and knowing when and where to eat can stretch your travel budget significantly while improving the quality of your meals. Here are a few strategies to ensure you eat like a king without breaking the bank.

1. Embrace the “Formule du Midi”

The lunch special is the holy grail of affordable dining in France, and Marseille is no exception. Between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, many bistros and brasseries offer a two or three-course set menu for a fraction of the dinner price. This allows you to sample high-quality Provençal cooking at prices that often hover around €15 to €18.

2. Venture into Noailles

The Noailles district, often called the “Belly of Marseille,” is a sensory overload of spice markets and food stalls. Here, you can find incredible street food, such as brick à l’œuf, samosas, and spicy merguez sandwiches. It is the most affordable and authentic way to experience the city’s North African and Comorian influences.

3. Go Pizza, Not Pancakes

Marseille has a fierce rivalry with Italy when it comes to pizza. The city’s famous wood-fired trucks and small pizzerias serve up massive, thin-crust pies topped with local ingredients like anchovies and Emmental. A whole pizza here often costs less than a single slice in other major European cities, making it a perfect shareable meal.

4. Look for “Prix Nets” and “Plat du Jour”

Many traditional restaurants post their daily specials on chalkboards outside. Look for the “Plat du Jour” (dish of the day), which is usually made with whatever was fresh at the market that morning. It is typically cheaper than the standard à la carte options and represents the chef’s best work of the day.

5. Drink Smart

Beverage markups can double the price of a meal. In Marseille, tap water is safe and free—simply ask for a “carafe d’eau.” If you want wine, opt for a “pichet” (a pitcher of the house wine) rather than a bottle. It is a local custom that keeps costs down and the atmosphere lively.

6. Snack on Socca and Panisse

For a quick, ultra-cheap bite, head to the stalls near the Estaque district or the Vieux-Port and order socca (a crispy chickpea flour pancake) or panisse (fried chickpea sticks). These Provençal street foods cost only a couple of euros and provide a delicious, filling snack while you explore.

7. Dine Away from the Vieux-Port

The restaurants with the best views of the yachts often have the highest prices and the lowest quality. Walk just five or ten minutes inland, toward areas like Cours Julien or La Plaine, and you will find restaurants with significantly better food and lower prices, as they cater primarily to residents rather than tourists.

Marseille proves that a tight budget does not mean sacrificing the joy of a great meal. The city’s culinary identity is built on the backs of dockworkers, sailors, and immigrant communities who demanded hearty, flavorful food at fair prices.

By following these tips and seeking out the spots on our list, you are not just saving money; you are participating in a truly authentic local experience. Take your time wandering the side streets, follow the smell of wood smoke and spices, and don’t be afraid to order in a mix of French and English.

The restaurants in this guide are known for their warmth as much as their value, ensuring that your memories of Marseille will be as rich as its bouillabaisse, even if your wallet stays comfortably full.
