12 Best Coffee Shops Near Royal Palace of Madrid

Tucked just behind the grand arches and manicured gardens of the Royal Palace lies a neighborhood that runs on espresso, churros, and quiet conversation. While the palace represents the official grandeur of Madrid, the surrounding streets of the Palacio and Ópera districts offer a more intimate glimpse into the city’s daily rhythm. Finding a place to rest your feet after navigating the vast Plaza de Oriente is essential, but not every café in such a touristic zone is created equal.

The key to navigating this area is knowing how to separate the authentic, high-quality roasters from the generic tourist traps. You want a place where the milk is steamed to a velvety texture, not boiled into a bubble bath. You want pastries that crumble correctly and baristas who greet you with a nod of recognition, even if you are just visiting for the day.

Because the Royal Palace is a starting point for so many walking tours, the nearby coffee scene has evolved to accommodate a mix of fast-paced sightseers and lingering locals. You can find everything from third-wave specialty shops focused on single-origin beans to traditional Spanish cafeterias where the clink of a spoon against glass is the soundtrack of the morning. The best options are usually tucked away on side streets, just far enough from the main gates to discourage the crowds.

One of the distinct advantages of this neighborhood is its architectural charm. Many of the best coffee spots occupy historic ground floors with original tile work, exposed brick, or narrow, atmospheric interiors that feel like a step back in time. Sitting with a flat white in a 19th-century building while looking out at a view of the Almudena Cathedral is an experience that no chain coffee shop can replicate.

You should also consider the time of day when planning your visit. Spanish coffee culture peaks mid-morning, but the area around the palace is active from early dawn when workers are setting up shop until late evening when the dinner crowd begins to stir. Some spots are perfect for a quick standing espresso at the bar, while others invite you to sit down with a laptop or a guidebook for an hour.

To ensure you find the quality you are looking for, it helps to look for signs of craftsmanship. A proper espresso machine, freshly ground beans, and a selection of alternative milks often indicate a shop that cares about its craft. Conversely, pre-packaged pastries and a menu dominated by fluorescent-colored drinks are usually signs to keep walking.

We have walked these cobblestone streets, sampled the cortados, and listened to the hiss of the steam wands to compile a definitive list. Whether you need a strong pick-me-up before entering the palace or a quiet corner to debrief after your tour, these are the spots that consistently deliver on quality, atmosphere, and authenticity.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.
Jackson Gold★★★★★
Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!

They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

Best breakfast in Madrid. We loved everything. It tasted healthy and fresh. The coffee was good too. You won’t go wrong. We sat outside and loved the morning vibe of everyone headed to work.
Ksenia Held★★★★★
I’m starting to think all the food in Madrid is out of this world, but Scarlett really stands out. This breakfast and brunch spot is awesome! They have an amazing selection of specialty coffee and a huge variety of brunch options to choose from. Even though the place was completely full, the service was impressively fast. We tried the Benedict Ibérico and the Bagel Ibérico, and both were absolutely incredible. If you're looking for a high-quality brunch with a great atmosphere, this is a must-visit!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
The place looks good inside. They also have a terrace outside. The food is good, both the eggs benedict and the chicken salad. I also had pancakes for dessert, they were also very good, the chocolate ones. The staff is friendly.
Wadad Lahad★★★★☆
A nice place in Madrid to enjoy your coffee and breakfast. The place has an indoor and outdoor. The place is always busy. The service is very good and fast. The coffee taste is good. Their variety of toasts are delicious.
Sophia Robbie★★★★★
We stumbled upon this place while walking by and decided to give it a try. We were delighted with our decision. It’s fantastic that they serve breakfast all day. My husband opted for a breakfast meal, while I chose the chicken masala. I must say, it was an absolute delight. Unlike many other places we visited, this one offered chai lattes, which was a huge relief. I was thrilled to find a place that served chai lattes, and it turned out to be an incredible experience.

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.
Mel Z★★★★★
I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by! Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks. The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!
Taoufik Mirkhan★☆☆☆☆
The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.
Melanie Smith★★★★★
Cute chain coffee shop, can find other locations in the city and in Barcelona. Nice that they are opened a bit later than other coffee shops in the area. Very god cold brew.

Completely stumbled upon this place in the Madrid rain - so glad I did!!! Lovely quiet little coffee shop not too far from Palacio Real, with lovely staff and a great iced matcha latte.

We’re visiting from the US and this was a recommendation from a local. Coffee is delicious. We got the chicken sandwich to split and it was a perfect portion to hold us over for lunchtime. You have to order at the register/counter everyone is super friendly. They have an English menu which is helpful. After you order at the register/counter, you can sit anywhere and they bring the food over to you. Would highly recommend checking it out. Great vibe in here.
Donald Bell★★★★★
Tastiest cortado I’ve had in my life. Great balance. I could actually taste the brightness and acidity of the espresso. Friendly staff. Cool space to hang out in. Prices are a little high but totally worth it if you’re looking for a premium coffee experience.
Netanel Nesher★★★★★
Great coffee place for a quick coffee and a snack. Nice vibes and friendly people. The avocado toast was simple and very tasty. Good prices as well
Damian Górecki★★★★★
Our first breakfast in Madrid and it was a good choice. Both the bagel and the bread with egg were fresh and tasty. The portions aren't the biggest, but they're fine. The barista knows his coffee, was friendly and will definitely recommend good beans to anyone. Filter coffee is made using an xbloom machine, which is an interesting fact. They also have really good tea. It’s a popular place, but it’s a good one.
Oleg Shestakov★★★★★
Great place to stop for a specialty coffee near the palace. I really enjoyed the Geisha hand brew. It’s on the pricier side at around 9€, but the beans are worth it. It was ripe and full of juicy flavor. I loved it. I was too slow to take a picture of the flat white, but it was made to a high standard with great milk temperature and texture. I definitely recommend this place for coffee enthusiasts!

The food was excellent. We had the cannelloni with beef, pumpkin purée, and béchamel sauce, as well as the special with jamón, baby potatoes, and cheese. For an appetizer, we ordered fried calamari with aioli and lemon. Everything was fresh, tender, and very flavorful. We shared the dishes between three people and left completely full. We were also served bread with butter, almonds, and hummus. The accompaniments were nice, but the bread was very cold—almost like airplane bread. Warming it up would make a noticeable difference. The restaurant also offered us truffles for dessert, which were delicious and a very thoughtful touch that elevated the overall experience. Prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portions are generous. The service was professional, and the location is excellent, with a view of the palace. The only downside was that the staff did not speak English at all, although this seems to be something you may encounter in many places across Madrid.
Camellia Fattahi★★★★★
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every time I come to Madrid, it’s impossible not to visit Café de Oriente. It has become one of my absolute favorite places. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is elegant, and the location is simply stunning. A special thank you to Daniel for his exceptional service. He is professional, attentive, warm, and always makes every visit feel special. His hospitality is one of the reasons I keep coming back. I highly recommend Café de Oriente to anyone visiting Madrid. I can’t wait for my next visit!
Hugo Pelland★★★★★
Had a great experience at Café de Oriente for a special birthday dinner in a gorgeous private room. The waiters assigned to us specifically were amazing and so was the food, which was both of great quality and variety, and adapted to everyone's needs!
Bin B★☆☆☆☆
Excellent location, but the waiters have a pitiful attitude. No customer service or pleasantries ( note the waiter in the picture specifically but not just him ! ) are involved with taking your overpriced order. Definitely won't return !
Grete Larsen Meyer★★★☆☆
Great location and excellent service, but the food needs improvement. This is a lovely spot for lunch, offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace. The menu and wine list are both very good. We ordered two different paellas, one black and one white. The rice was flavorful and cooked perfectly, with an excellent texture. However, both dishes were notably lacking in seafood. A great paella should be overflowing with fish and shellfish, but here the dishes consisted of about 80% rice. A venue with such a prime location, attentive service, and elegant surroundings deserves a stronger kitchen.

This place is amazing! I cannot say enough good things about their service. The honey cake (Medovnik) is absolutely delicious, and don’t even get me started on their delicious ginger mojito… WOW! Nany and Cary certainly added to the greatness of my trip to Madrid. A must-visit when in Madrid! Highly recommend!
Laurent Martroye★★★★★
Everything delicious!! Especially the juices and the acai! All natural and fresh. Highly recommended, also staff super friendly 🙏❤️
Priyanka Tolia★★★★★
If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Their staff is so patient and friendly. We being vegetarians generally have limited choices and on top of that, it’s hard to find good food in a place where meat eaters have more options. Their staff took such good care of us, explained the options well and served us the most delicious avocado sandwich ever. Their cappuccino was equally amazing. Although they didn’t have chips on their menu but when I asked, they gave us complimentary chips and refused to charge for it. In a place and location that’s full of tourists and patience generally runs thin, this place offered great food and customer service when they could easily go the other way!
Linton Nightingale★★★★☆
Lovely coffee shop in the heart of Madrid de las Austrias District. This clean, quaint cafe has a decent selection of fresh cakes and serves them in generous portions. It's reasonably priced and the service is professional, friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend the lemon meringue pie.

Don't let the size fool you—Sole Mio Café is absolute proof that the best things come in small packages. It’s a tiny spot, but it completely wins you over with its genuine, welcoming approach and fantastic hospitality. On top of that, the service is incredibly quick, making it the perfect hassle-free stop when you're on the move. Most importantly? The coffee is genuinely tasty and hits the spot every single time. If you are passing by, do yourself a favor and stop in. A brilliant little find! Feel free to tweak it if you want to add any specifics about what you ordered!
Rhealaine Sayson★★★★★
We went to this coffee shop a bit early and saw the staff cleaning and getting ready to open. The staff member we met was really friendly and spoke good English. We loved the coffee, the pistachio pastry, and even the cookie. I also really liked the Iberica sandwich. The owner was so nice — there was a dog excitedly chasing some crumbs that just fell on the floor, and she gave it some dog treats. It was such a cute moment. It’s a nice spot to have breakfast and just people-watch.
Annika N. Hernandez★★★★★
delicious coffee — i've been craving for decent coffee after days of bland brewed coffee from the flight and the hotel 😭 lol had the medium roast pourover coffee and a cortado, both were nice. the sandwiches were delicious too. i only visited madrid for a week and stopped by here twice during my trip. owner and staff were very nice. 😊
Luka Nikolic★☆☆☆☆
Nice place but beware. THIS IS NOT A SPECIALTY COFFEE. We asked for double espresso from only beans they had and got 200ml coffee soup. They are nice, but this is just a cafe, not a specialty coffee shop.
Roman Bongin★★★★★
We arrived in Madrid early in the morning and discovered this cozy little café right next to our hotel — what a find! ☕️ The coffee was excellent, rich, and flavorful. The salmon bruschetta was absolutely delicious, and the mortadella sandwich was just perfect. For dessert, we tried the caramel-filled nut cookies, crispy wafer rolls, and a classic cheesecake — all incredibly fresh and tasty. It’s a small place, but very welcoming, with friendly staff and everything made with love. A perfect spot to start the day in Madrid — highly recommended! 💛

Very beautiful cafeteria. Loved it! As I understood, the only thing they have and it's not vegan is the eggs, but they have vegan eggs as well, so I am not sure why they have eggs 😅. Great coffee, delicious tostadas and cakes, totally recommended place.

Awesome little place. Been there twice during a visit to Madrid over the weekend. Usually a big fan of coffee but I tried the iced matcha and banana bread. Don‘t order it if you‘re not hungry 😂 The slices are huge! Friendly staff and more than fairly priced for what you get.
Daniel Roures Rego★★★★★
I went to Dale Café for lunch today, and I loved everything I ate: the muhammara, the toast with cashew cheese and the dulce de leche cheesecake. Plus, I ordered a pistachio roscón de reyes, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff are super nice. Almost everything is vegan, including the roscón. I totally recommend this place.

If your kids are tired after the palace, come here. Not crowded. The kid loved the pasta, and coffee was better than expected. Not crowded. Relaxing and out of the heat. Inexpensive. Nice view of palace courtyard.

If you are hungry, have small kids that absolutely need a break, or you need something to eat (and aren't picky), this is the place. There are stairs or an elevator to get in, but be careful leaving as you might accidentally leave palace and have to go through security again. The food is...okay. It's a cafeteria in a tourist area, so best not to get your hopes up. The coffee is...acceptable, but not great.
C Vassar★☆☆☆☆
Food was expensive and meh. Worst part was the man working the register who was rude, not helpful, and condescending. (And I spoke in Spanish with him, so it wasn't a language barrier.). One of the ladies working there was kind and tried to make up for her coworker, but I won't ever go back.

Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!! Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵 Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom. The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐 Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

My favourite Cold Brew in Madrid, just the absolute best. Also one of my favourite coffee places in Madrid. If you are looking for a perfect cup every time, head here. My only hesitation is that sometimes the staff seem a bit unfriendly.

Cute little café with a bakery next to it. It was cozy to sit outside on a sunny day, enjoy good coffee, and just relax. The service was good and fast, especially considering there was only one person working.

Delicious cappuccino!! The cappuccino comes in S, M, or L which I found strange but I got a M and it seemed to be a typical cappuccino size. Beans perfectly roasted, very sweet, the milk foam was also perfect. The barista spoke English and was friendly. Provided the WiFi password which I appreciated. Not much seating but the interior is very cute and with good chill music, it has great vibes if you can get a spot! I bought two bags of coffee to go, the beans were that good. Wish I were staying in Madrid longer so I could come back!

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)

Tips for Enjoying Coffee Near the Royal Palace

Understanding the local coffee etiquette and logistics can significantly enhance your experience. While the neighborhood is welcoming, a few insider tips will help you drink like a local, avoid long lines, and find the best value during your visit.

1. Know your coffee terminology.
Spanish coffee menus can be confusing if you are not familiar with the local lingo. A café solo is a straight espresso, while a cortado is an espresso cut with a splash of warm milk. If you want something closer to a latte, order a café con leche. Asking for a "latte" might get you a glass of plain milk, so stick to the Spanish terms to get exactly what you want.

2. Consider drinking at the bar.
In many traditional Spanish cafeterias, the price of your coffee changes depending on where you consume it. Standing at the bar (en barra) is often significantly cheaper than sitting at a table (en mesa). If you are in a hurry or just need a quick caffeine boost, follow the lead of the locals and stand at the counter rather than taking up a table.

3. Time your visit to avoid tour groups.
The immediate vicinity of the palace gets flooded with tour groups between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and again around 4:00 PM. If you want a quieter experience, visit the coffee shops just before opening or during the traditional Spanish siesta window. You will find that baristas have more time to chat and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

4. Pair your coffee with a local pastry.
While specialty coffee shops are on the rise, the traditional pairing in this area is still coffee with a sweet or savory pastry. Look for napolitanas (chocolate or cream-filled pastries) or torrijas (Spanish-style French toast) if you are visiting around Easter. For a savory option, a small tostada with crushed tomato and olive oil is the perfect breakfast companion.

5. Carry cash for smaller establishments.
While most modern specialty coffee shops near the palace accept credit cards and contactless payments, some of the older, family-run bars still operate on a cash-only basis. To avoid the awkwardness of having to run to an ATM after drinking your coffee, keep a €10 or €20 note in your pocket just in case.

The area surrounding the Royal Palace is more than just a pass-through zone for tourists; it is a living neighborhood with a deep appreciation for the ritual of coffee. Whether you choose a sleek, modern roastery or a century-old bar with marble tables, the act of pausing for a warm drink here connects you to the daily pulse of Madrid.

Once you have found your favorite spot, you will likely find yourself returning for a second cup before your trip is over. The best way to experience this historic district is not rushing from one monument to the next, but sitting still for a moment, watching the world pass by through the steam rising from your cup.
