12 Best Cafes Near Royal Palace of Madrid

Standing in the vast Plaza de la Armería, with the grand façade of the Royal Palace of Madrid rising before you, it is easy to feel like you have stepped back into the era of Spanish monarchs. The palace, with its staggering 3,418 rooms, is a monument to opulence, history, and architectural mastery, drawing millions of visitors each year who wander its gilded halls and manicured gardens. Yet, exploring this immense structure and the surrounding historic district is an endeavor that requires stamina; the cobblestone streets, steep hills, and sheer scale of the site often leave visitors weary and in need of refreshment.

While the area directly surrounding the palace is undeniably regal, it is not always known for culinary authenticity at first glance; tourist traps lurk on the main thoroughfares, offering overpriced paella and lackluster sangria. However, to assume this is all the neighborhood has to offer would be a grave mistake. Venturing just a few minutes down the winding side streets of the Barrio de los Austrias or crossing the viaduct toward the vibrant La Latina district reveals a thriving specialty coffee scene that perfectly balances tradition with modern gastronomy.

Madrid’s café culture is a unique blend of the old and the new. You will find historic institutions where waiters in crisp white jackets serve café con leche alongside fresh churros, coexisting peacefully with modern third-wave roasters pulling shots of single-origin espresso under exposed brick and industrial lighting. This evolution has transformed the city into a haven for coffee lovers, where the quality of the bean is taken as seriously as the grandeur of the architecture surrounding it.

Whether you are looking for a quick, potent cortado to fuel your sightseeing, a quiet corner to rest your feet while journaling, or a sumptuous brunch to recover from a late night of tapas, the area around the palace has something to suit every palate. The best spots often serve a dual purpose, acting as bakeries, bookstores, or cocktail bars by night, ensuring that your visit can be tailored to the time of day and your specific mood.

Navigating the narrow, sloping streets of central Madrid can be disorienting, especially after hours of walking through the massive palace wings and the Sabatini Gardens. Knowing exactly where to turn for a quality brew, a reliable Wi-Fi connection, and a clean restroom is invaluable. A well-chosen café stop is not merely about caffeine; it is about experiencing the local rhythm of life, observing the madrileños, and giving your body a necessary reprieve.

This guide curates a list of the most exceptional cafés located within a comfortable walking distance of the Royal Palace. We have evaluated these locations based on the quality of their coffee, the atmosphere, the availability of food, and their proximity to the major tourist landmarks, ensuring that you spend less time searching on your phone and more time enjoying the rich flavors of Madrid.

From hidden patios that offer a serene escape from the bustling crowds to minimalist spaces where the latte art is a work of genius, these are the establishments that stand out in a city saturated with caffeine. Prepare to discover that the best part of your visit to the Royal Palace might just be the coffee break that follows it.

The food was excellent. We had the cannelloni with beef, pumpkin purée, and béchamel sauce, as well as the special with jamón, baby potatoes, and cheese. For an appetizer, we ordered fried calamari with aioli and lemon. Everything was fresh, tender, and very flavorful. We shared the dishes between three people and left completely full. We were also served bread with butter, almonds, and hummus. The accompaniments were nice, but the bread was very cold—almost like airplane bread. Warming it up would make a noticeable difference. The restaurant also offered us truffles for dessert, which were delicious and a very thoughtful touch that elevated the overall experience. Prices are slightly on the higher side, but the portions are generous. The service was professional, and the location is excellent, with a view of the palace. The only downside was that the staff did not speak English at all, although this seems to be something you may encounter in many places across Madrid.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every time I come to Madrid, it’s impossible not to visit Café de Oriente. It has become one of my absolute favorite places. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is elegant, and the location is simply stunning. A special thank you to Daniel for his exceptional service. He is professional, attentive, warm, and always makes every visit feel special. His hospitality is one of the reasons I keep coming back. I highly recommend Café de Oriente to anyone visiting Madrid. I can’t wait for my next visit!

Had a great experience at Café de Oriente for a special birthday dinner in a gorgeous private room. The waiters assigned to us specifically were amazing and so was the food, which was both of great quality and variety, and adapted to everyone's needs!
Bin B★☆☆☆☆
Excellent location, but the waiters have a pitiful attitude. No customer service or pleasantries ( note the waiter in the picture specifically but not just him ! ) are involved with taking your overpriced order. Definitely won't return !
Grete Larsen Meyer★★★☆☆
Great location and excellent service, but the food needs improvement. This is a lovely spot for lunch, offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace. The menu and wine list are both very good. We ordered two different paellas, one black and one white. The rice was flavorful and cooked perfectly, with an excellent texture. However, both dishes were notably lacking in seafood. A great paella should be overflowing with fish and shellfish, but here the dishes consisted of about 80% rice. A venue with such a prime location, attentive service, and elegant surroundings deserves a stronger kitchen.

Best breakfast in Madrid. We loved everything. It tasted healthy and fresh. The coffee was good too. You won’t go wrong. We sat outside and loved the morning vibe of everyone headed to work.

I’m starting to think all the food in Madrid is out of this world, but Scarlett really stands out. This breakfast and brunch spot is awesome! They have an amazing selection of specialty coffee and a huge variety of brunch options to choose from. Even though the place was completely full, the service was impressively fast. We tried the Benedict Ibérico and the Bagel Ibérico, and both were absolutely incredible. If you're looking for a high-quality brunch with a great atmosphere, this is a must-visit!
Cristina Mitroiu★★★★★
The place looks good inside. They also have a terrace outside. The food is good, both the eggs benedict and the chicken salad. I also had pancakes for dessert, they were also very good, the chocolate ones. The staff is friendly.

A nice place in Madrid to enjoy your coffee and breakfast. The place has an indoor and outdoor. The place is always busy. The service is very good and fast. The coffee taste is good. Their variety of toasts are delicious.

We stumbled upon this place while walking by and decided to give it a try. We were delighted with our decision. It’s fantastic that they serve breakfast all day. My husband opted for a breakfast meal, while I chose the chicken masala. I must say, it was an absolute delight. Unlike many other places we visited, this one offered chai lattes, which was a huge relief. I was thrilled to find a place that served chai lattes, and it turned out to be an incredible experience.

If your kids are tired after the palace, come here. Not crowded. The kid loved the pasta, and coffee was better than expected. Not crowded. Relaxing and out of the heat. Inexpensive. Nice view of palace courtyard.
snarkyguy★★★☆☆
If you are hungry, have small kids that absolutely need a break, or you need something to eat (and aren't picky), this is the place. There are stairs or an elevator to get in, but be careful leaving as you might accidentally leave palace and have to go through security again. The food is...okay. It's a cafeteria in a tourist area, so best not to get your hopes up. The coffee is...acceptable, but not great.
C Vassar★☆☆☆☆
Food was expensive and meh. Worst part was the man working the register who was rude, not helpful, and condescending. (And I spoke in Spanish with him, so it wasn't a language barrier.). One of the ladies working there was kind and tried to make up for her coworker, but I won't ever go back.
Robbert Manders★★☆☆☆
Smoothies weren't fresh; all ingredients were store bought. Yet 5.50/piece.

Homely atmosphere and solid coffee. It seems to me that not much has been invested in the interior, they are in a nice location and in a beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible service, I was welcomed very warmly and everything I ate and drank here was amazing. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner! 10/10.
Gustavo Garcia★★★★★
Amazing team running this coffee shop! Service is one of the best in the area. While it is a very touristy location, many of us that live around here frequent it for our daily coffee/breakfast. They have amazing food options and coffee. If the weather is nice you can also sit outside. They are very flexible and accommodating if you need to work a bit on your laptop and they are also dog friendly!
Adéla Krůčková★☆☆☆☆
They clearly have preferred customers, and if you’re not a local, they make it obvious. I’m not reviewing the food, but the service. Our first visit was good, which is why we came back. It was busy, so we chose to wait for a table. We asked the staff if we could reserve a table once one became available, but we were told no and that we had to wait until a table was free. So we waited outside the restaurant for about half an hour. When a table finally became available, we sat down. The same staff member then came over and told us the table was actually reserved. He had been holding it for two women who arrived after us and were seated inside. Another table was about to become free, so I went to move there. At the moment I was sitting down and my partner had gone to the restroom, a woman from a nearby table came over and took a chair from our table. The staff did nothing about it, said nothing to her, and only apologized to us, telling us to wait another 20 minutes until something else became available. So after waiting for more than half an hour and seeing two tables become free, we still didn’t get to eat. I would have appreciated a better approach from the staff. If you say that tables cannot be reserved, you shouldn’t then ask me to leave a table I’ve been waiting for. Unfortunately, a big disappointment.

A charming little spot in Madrid that offers a sweet escape for weary travelers. The Pistachio Espresso is their signature menu, and it’s the perfect treat to recharge your energy. I’m truly sad that I didn't get to visit more than once during my stay.

The food was tasty, but significantly undercooked. The egg whites were still translucent—as if they had just been cracked cold onto the dish—and the Spanish tortilla was runny. The coffee was good, but the “fresh” orange juice was bottled. The service was disappointing and ultimately the main reason for the negative review. When we asked for water, the waitress rudely told us to go inside and get it ourselves, in a visibly frustrated manner. There was no indication that this was a self-service process, especially in what appeared to be a full-service establishment. It felt as though, because we didn’t order bottled water, we were not considered worth serving. On a positive note, the plaza itself is a great location and prices are reasonable. However, the service needs improvement—although, to be fair, this seemed to be a recurring issue in several places across Madrid.

A lovely place to stop at while exploring Madrid by foot. Food and drink available. We had their fruit smoothies made freshly on ordering.

We are from the states visiting and stumbled upon this place while walking around the other day. The service and the warmth from the people who were working were amazing. We met someone while sitting at the bar, we didn’t get his name. I don’t know if he was the owner, manager, etc but he was so nice and truly made the stop in this restaurant memorable. Recommended the perfect beer and ended up chatting with us the whole time. We wish we got his name but just wanted to let him know he made it a great time and when we are visiting again we will for sure be back.
Jon Matson★★★★★
I really love this restaurant and I’ve been there three times. It’s a great place to sit out on the patio and people watch as well. So far I’ve had the large beans soup, and I can’t remember the name of it. But it’s tasty. The octopus is delicious as well as the beef tail. It’s a great place to get a drink. Service is good. I will go back.

It opens early, making it a great place for breakfast with coffee. 👍 One coffee per dessert was a must 😂, but it was so sweet and delicious. 😍 (I envy the atmosphere where dogs come into the cafe without any problem… All the dogs I met by chance at the cafe were well-trained, quiet, and cute. 😍)

The atmosphere is great for a relaxing coffee break. The Saobao was absolutely delicious—fluffy, flavorful, and a total highlight. The coffee was solid, complementing the food nicely. Highly recommend this charming spot for a tasty treat and a cozy vibe!

The Açaí bowls were absolutely delicious and tasted really fresh and bio. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Very good coffee and food. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service was friendly throughout our visit. Especially the toasts were absolutely delicious — perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Your friendly coffee shop around the corner 🙂 The space is so limited so you need to early to get seat, coffee's and service is excellent. I went there 3 times (basically 3 nights in madrid) in a row and i felt like home. If you can able to pay cash you can get %6 discount on top of the bill or you can pay with your credit card. I mostly paid around 10-12 euro-ish depending my order. 1 americano coffee (with great cream) + meal. You can also order fresh cakes, croissants too. People who working in the coffee is so nice and talkative and good ambient music all day.

Lovely spot to stop for a latte and tomato toast. Very friendly atmosphere and they were kind when my spanish wasn’t great, haha. Around 9:30am on a Thursday I was able to sit and people-watch! Thank you. We came back twice!! Pretty small place so I recommend takeaway unless you are a party of 4 or less
Helena Fombella★★★★★
Top-tier spot in the neighborhood for a quick grab-and-go 🍵 Stopped by for a takeaway coco matcha and the execution was spot on: brilliant green hue, velvety microfoam with crisp latte art, and that balanced, clean sweetness without any gritty texture at the bottom. The space itself is cozy and well-equipped (solid La Marzocco setup on the counter, great selection of single-origin beans, and freshly baked pastries lined up) 🥐 Fast service, precise temperature, and zero fluff. Definitely a reliable daily stop if you care about beverage quality. 🍃

This place is amazing! I cannot say enough good things about their service. The honey cake (Medovnik) is absolutely delicious, and don’t even get me started on their delicious ginger mojito… WOW! Nany and Cary certainly added to the greatness of my trip to Madrid. A must-visit when in Madrid! Highly recommend!

Everything delicious!! Especially the juices and the acai! All natural and fresh. Highly recommended, also staff super friendly 🙏❤️
Priyanka Tolia★★★★★
If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Their staff is so patient and friendly. We being vegetarians generally have limited choices and on top of that, it’s hard to find good food in a place where meat eaters have more options. Their staff took such good care of us, explained the options well and served us the most delicious avocado sandwich ever. Their cappuccino was equally amazing. Although they didn’t have chips on their menu but when I asked, they gave us complimentary chips and refused to charge for it. In a place and location that’s full of tourists and patience generally runs thin, this place offered great food and customer service when they could easily go the other way!

Lovely coffee shop in the heart of Madrid de las Austrias District. This clean, quaint cafe has a decent selection of fresh cakes and serves them in generous portions. It's reasonably priced and the service is professional, friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend the lemon meringue pie.

The worse coffee I had in Madrid, had a late with oat milk, barely a faint taste of coffee, milky color and just literally oat milk. . Iced version was better. Can’t explain the reviews . Had also a cookie which was fine . Only take away option.
Mel Z★★★★★
I love visiting local coffee shops and I am glad I stopped by! Not only did the barista create a great oatmilk latte, but she was nice, friendly and happy to explain any other coffee drinks. The girl by the stand was not as nice or attentive, but the barista made it worthwhile! Thanks for making a great latte for a long day!
Taoufik Mirkhan★☆☆☆☆
The cappuccino was disappointing. The steamed milk seemed to be poured straight into the cup without proper barista technique, resulting in an unbalanced texture, either overly foamy or too watery, rather than the smooth, creamy consistency expected from a cappuccino.

Lovely cafe with lovely personnel! Enjoyed a small breakfast and top of that a Patal de Nata. Which was actually good, since the person who makes them is from Porto! Coffee is great, not a lot of space and on busy days the visit could be up to 30 minutes top.

One of the best breakfasts in Madrid! Over a 5 day holiday I came here twice, and both times I was very pleased! The coffee is fantastic, service is fast and friendly, the atmosphere in the shop is great - and to top it off, the food is unbeatable! Great pastries, and delicious sandwiches! I’d recommend the Tostada Reina Pepiada - one of the best toasts I’ve had! A must visit for anyone looking for good breakfast in Madrid.

Lovely breakfast spot in Lavapies. The coffee was good too. The plaza is always lively, specially suring the street markets on the weekend.

The vibe of this place is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed it — it just resonates with me. The service was fine; nothing unpleasant happened during my visit. The serving time was short, and the prices for coffee and cake, considering it’s the capital city, are quite reasonable. I’m honestly surprised by the number of negative reviews. Coffe was a little bit sour for my taste but I enjoyed it. Overall, it feels soothing and cozy, a place where you naturally want to slow down and stay a little longer.

We had an amazing 3 course meal at the cafe! Honestly, we thought it would be pre-made, delivered and warmed up…it was wonderfully fresh, hot or appropriately chilled! The artichokes and ham and burrata salad were a wonderful start to the following courses. I had teriyaki salmon and my husband had the grilled pork. Both were delicious and hot off of the grill. Of course, we had to try the desserts and I’ve never tasted a better chocolate lava cake nice and warm to slowly melt the vanilla ice cream! Wow! Awesome! And my husband had the cheesecake with strawberry sauce that was better than my homemade recipe. But even better than the food was the friendly and swift wait staff. They worked together and with a smile! The cafe was a delightful surprise and highly recommend! Thank you for a lovely experience!

It took half an hour to serve us our drinks and 1 hour to serve us our meal. When they served our meal they didn't know exactly what they were serving and they gave us too much because of this. 2 ladies weren't very friendly. There was a guy serving and he was very friendly but also didn't speak any English. The food was not very tasty because of a lack of herbs, but I do think they use fresh ingredients. The plates are too small if you are hungry. The Pacharan didn't taste like it should taste. Maybe there was water added, I don't know exactly. They served quite a lot of the Pacharan. The terrace looks nice next to the palace so the view is good.

Good specialty coffee, simple, yet incredibly good food! I keep coming back for their salad bowl with shredded chicken, tomatoes, edamame & pecans - it’s so balanced in taste and in ingredients💔 Tried their sweet options as well - the oats, the homemade nut butter toast, the pancakes - all of them are worthy as well. Definitely recommend this place, I go there super often myself🫶🏻

Very nice coffee shop with tasty pastries and nice staff. Good place to hang out after visiting one of the two big museums to rest your legs and relax. You can also stop for breakfast before you move on. They have sweet and savory snacks.

Everything we tried was so good. The carrot cake is not pictured but also delicious. We thought the cacio e pepe scrambled eggs were so creative! The place in itself is so creative. It’s everything we love about Madrid. Saved as a favorite and will be back for another iced latte with hazelnut syrup.

Good Coffee, nice people, Great Breakfast! Also nice Place and General. Like the Mix with the Books. What I don’t like is the cheap vinyl floor. I bet the original surface a few layers beloe would have charm

Had the chicken sandwich with spicy mayo and a cold brew both were really beautiful. Love their branding and the overall atmosphere but for me the moment this place became a “5 Star” establishment was the moment is stepped in the bathroom. It’s a clean and comfortable bathroom but the wall art made my day. I wont give away and spoil the experience for you, but all I can say that you will be well entertained 😌

Tips for Enjoying Cafés Near the Royal Palace

To make the most of your coffee excursions in this historic part of Madrid, it helps to understand the local etiquette and timing. Unlike many other capital cities where coffee is often grabbed to-go from a kiosk, café culture in Madrid is largely a sit-down, leisurely affair, though the modern specialty shops are changing this dynamic. The following tips will help you navigate the scene like a local, avoid common tourist pitfalls, and ensure you get the best possible experience and value during your visit.

1. Mind the Spanish Coffee Schedule
While you might crave a flat white at 4:00 PM, many traditional Spanish cafés focus on coffee service strictly in the morning and immediately after lunch. If you want a classic café con leche, aim to visit before 12:00 PM or after 5:00 PM. However, the specialty coffee shops on this list generally serve espresso drinks all day, making them your safest bet for an afternoon caffeine fix.

2. Understand the Lingo
If you walk into a traditional bar and order a "latte," you will likely receive a glass of milk. To get a coffee with milk, ask for a café con leche. If you prefer less milk and stronger coffee, order a cortado. For a small, intense black coffee, ask for a café solo. Knowing these three terms will serve you well in the more historic establishments near the palace.

3. Look for the "Menu del Día" for Value
If you are visiting during lunch hours and need a substantial meal, skip the expensive à la carte tourist menus. Many cafés and bars in the La Latina area, just a short walk from the palace, offer a Menú del Día. This fixed-price lunch usually includes a starter, a main course, a drink (often including coffee), and sometimes dessert, offering exceptional value for a sit-down meal.

4. To-Go Culture is Evolving
While the "coffee to go" concept was once foreign to Spain, most modern specialty cafés near the palace now offer takeaway cups. However, traditional bars may not have lids or portable cups. If you are in a rush to get to the Almudena Cathedral, look for the newer, hipster-style coffee shops which are equipped for the on-the-go tourist.

5. Embrace the "Tostada" Breakfast
For an authentic and cheap Madrid breakfast, order a tostada con tomate (toasted bread rubbed with fresh tomato and olive oil) alongside your coffee. This is the standard morning fuel for locals and is usually priced reasonably. It is a far better and fresher option than the pastries that have been sitting on the counter since dawn.

6. Check for Siesta Closures
While this is less common in the central tourist districts, some family-run cafés in the winding streets behind the Plaza Mayor may close between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Always have a backup option from the list above if you are planning a late afternoon break, as the modern specialty roasters typically operate continuously from morning until evening.

Taking the time to sit down and enjoy a coffee is an essential part of the Madrid experience. It allows you to observe the daily life of the city, from the elderly men debating football scores to the young professionals working on laptops. The area around the Royal Palace, despite its heavy tourist footfall, still harbors pockets of authentic local life that are best experienced at a slow pace, one hand wrapped around a warm cup.

As you plan your itinerary, remember that the palace is just the beginning of the story of this neighborhood. The flavors, aromas, and warm hospitality found in the surrounding cafés are what truly bring the city to life. Whether you choose a historic institution that has been serving coffee for over a century or a cutting-edge roastery experimenting with new fermentation methods, you are guaranteed to find the perfect spot to rest, recharge, and reflect on the beauty of Madrid.
