Stepping out of the grand arches of the Royal Palace in Madrid often leaves visitors with a singular craving: authentic Spanish food in a setting that matches the regal surroundings. The area immediately bordering the palace, known as the Palacio district, is a fascinating mix of tourist thoroughfares and hidden residential corners where Madrileños have lived for generations.
Finding a genuine tapas experience here requires a bit of local knowledge to separate the timeless institutions from the tourist traps. You do not need to walk far; some of the city’s most historic taverns are tucked away on the narrow streets cascading down toward Plaza de España and the Opera district.
The true spirit of tapas is not just about the food, but the rhythm of the meal. It is about standing at a wooden bar, ordering a caña (small beer) or a glass of vermouth, and receiving a complimentary bite or selecting a racion to share with friends.
In this guide, we focus on establishments that have maintained their integrity, serving traditional recipes that have defined Madrid’s culinary scene for decades. These are places where the marble counters are worn smooth by elbows, the walls are lined with dusty wine bottles, and the aroma of garlic and olive oil hangs heavy in the air.
Whether you are looking for a quick bite of tortilla before touring the Cathedral, or a long, leisurely afternoon of grazing on jamón and croquetas after visiting the Royal Collections, this list has you covered. We have prioritized walkability, ensuring that every recommendation is within a comfortable stroll of the palace gates.
We understand that your time in Madrid is precious, and a bad meal can taint the memory of a beautiful day. Therefore, we have curated venues that offer not just food, but a slice of Madrid’s soul, ensuring your culinary journey is as memorable as the palace itself.
Below, you will find a curated list of the ten best tapas bars near the Royal Palace, followed by essential etiquette tips to help you navigate the scene like a local rather than a tourist.

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.
Tim Atanacio★★★★★
Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes.
Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!

Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end.
First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start.
When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. Shops, more restaurants and good views.

Our first place we visited after arriving. Chat recommended due to its history. Wait staff not the friendliest but we managed. If looking for a quick drink it could be worth it but then again,,, there’s 1000 others you could try.

Great outdoor seating and wonderful service from the staff!
The calamari tasted just right, not to mention croquettes and jambon iberico.. to die for!

Stopped in here for a quick bite and drinks before tour at the Royal Palace. Amazing service by Aries, so kind- Truly enjoyed all of the food and service! Thank you! A perfect stop before or after touring the Royal Palace.

Stopped for breakfast early in the morning after landing in Madrid and had the revuelto de espárragos con morcilla and coffee. Very good food and outstanding service.

Beautiful traditional eateries located near the Royal Palace. Very traditional tapas menu with fantastic freshly cooked food. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. Very traditional place you could easily just come for drinks or tapas but I would highly recommend both, we loved it. The wine choices are excellent try the house wine first you probably will be very happy.
(One thing to note, the food is so nice but if you are used to UK tapas portions, you will find the portion sizes here about twice the size of at home so be careful not to over order. That said, they are so kind, the staff will package up food if you want to take away).

El Minibar is an absolute gem in Madrid! The food is wonderful, offering creative and delicious tapas like the award-winning Tapa Bretón. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home instantly. On top of that, the space is beautiful, cozy, and full of character. It is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable dinner. Highly recommended!

A small place near central Madrid. Air conditioned which was a savior today at 98degrees. Had a tomato and lettuce salad, gazpacho, spiced potatoes and fried cod with shrimp. Everything was excellent and in tapas portions was more than enough for two people. All washed down with beer. The menu is larger and varied and portions can be tapas sized or larger for sharing with a bigger group. Definitely worth a lunch or dinner stop.

Excellent tapas experience in Madrid. I came here on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 PM right when they opened, and within a few minutes the place filled up quickly. I didn’t have a reservation, but since I was dining solo they were kind enough to seat me. You may want reservations if you’re coming during busy hours.
I had the melted goat cheese appetizer with what tasted like fig jam and a balsamic glaze, paired with the bread they served, absolutely delicious and very rich in the best way. I also ordered the ham croquettes, which were excellent as well. Between those two dishes and two Cokes, it was more than enough food for one person.
The atmosphere is quaint and very Madrid. The staff was efficient and friendly. I read many great reviews beforehand and after eating here I understand why. A local favorite. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic tapas in central Madrid.
Timothy Redman★★★★★
My dining companion and I were looking for a quick drink and snack after touristing hard. We found this cozy place right off the main drag. We ordered drinks, and food, tuna tataki, and the duck confit. Both delightfully tasty, savory, and rich. What a treat! Our appetite satiated, we once again took to the crowded streets of Madrid.
Josh Siu★★★★★
Food was good. Service was good (although we heard one of the servers be a bit curt with the next table about having to buy food to sit at the table, not just drinks). They offered a free little tapa while we waited for our food. Space is a bit smaller so you might be at the bar during a busy time.
My spouse wanted lemonade but they didn’t have any. When asked for water with lemon and they cut an entire lemon to add to her water - awesome!
What to got:
- ham croquettes
- shrimp croquettes (a hint of spiciness)
- crispy wild boar (in a spring roll deep fried outer layer)

Had a nice meal here trying some real Andalusian classics. We started with the Salmorejo — the traditional cold tomato cream made with olive oil, bread, and a touch of vinegar. It came topped with chopped boiled egg and cured ham, silky smooth and beautifully balanced between tangy and rich. A perfect starter, especially refreshing if you're visiting in warmer weather.
Next was the Albóndigas de Choco (cuttlefish meatballs) — a dish you don't see often outside Andalusia. The meatballs were tender with a delicate seafood flavor, served in a rich, golden sauce. Really unique and packed with flavor.
We also tried the Flamenquín Cordobés — the traditional Cordobesian specialty of rolled pork loin stuffed with cured ham and cheese, breaded and fried. It was nicely presented with little roasted potatoes glazed in a honey-mustard sauce and dots of garlic aioli on the side, but unfortunately the pork itself came out a bit dry for our taste. The sauces helped, but the meat could have used a touch more moisture.
Overall, portions were generous and prices reasonable for the quality. The Salmorejo and cuttlefish meatballs were definite highlights — just wish the flamenquín had been a bit juicier. Still a good spot to try authentic Andalusian dishes in Madrid.

We had a wonderful experience! The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. We especially enjoyed trying the traditional Andalusian dishes, which were full of flavor and clearly prepared with care. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and relaxing. Highly recommended if you’re looking for authentic local cuisine. We would definitely come back!

Had dinner here a few days ago. It was as good as all the reviews said. We were looked after exceptionally well. Nothing was rushed, lots of help with the menu and wine list. The food was very good quality well prepared, and well priced I would certainly recommend.

Early flight landed us at a tiny Andalusian (southern Spain) spot 5 mins before opening—a random Google gem with rave reviews. Total win! Small place, huge flavors. They had an English menu, and the lovely lady who greeted us explained everything in detail, giving us a great understanding of the dishes.
Our fam of 4 devoured two lunch sets (with artichoke ham soup/Spanish cold tomato soup, salmon,/beef stew, and dessert×2), tuna, Cordoba pork rolls, and a stunning local cheese board.
The cheese platter was a highlight—four types of local sheep/goat cheeses paired with different jams, dried fruits, and jellies.
This was a super satisfying meal at a great price. Highly recommend!

A DELICIOUS meal. Slow service. The bread served with olive oil and black flakes salt was mind blowing... may be the best bread I've ever had. It just breathes freshness. They do simple so well. I will say though, the Russian-shrimp salad is very mayo heavy and was difficult to finish.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at this tapas restaurant. Every dish was beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or family.
What truly made our visit exceptional was the outstanding service from Mr. Frank Silvero. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from the moment we arrived. His recommendations were excellent, he made sure everything was perfect throughout our meal, and his friendly personality added so much to the overall experience. It’s rare to receive service of this calibre, and Mr. Silvero deserves special recognition for making our evening so memorable.
If you’re looking for delicious tapas paired with exceptional hospitality, this restaurant is an easy five-star recommendation. We’ll definitely be back!

Great and superfriendly and efficient service. We loved the prawns, I enjoyed the Cesar salad, my husband not. We did not enjoy the beef Tatar . Pimentos were yummy.

Great Service & People-Watching, But the Food Misses the Mark
Come here for the location and the atmosphere, but lower your expectations for the kitchen and bar.
The Highlights:
Our waiter, Moutalab, completely carried the experience. He was incredibly friendly, highly knowledgeable about the area, and happy to customize dishes to your palate. Ask for him! The location is also fantastic for walking around and people-watching.
The Drawbacks:
The food looked authentic but was mediocre and bland at best. The sangria was also highly diluted with hardly any alcohol.
Verdict:
Go for the vibe, the tourist-watching, and Moutalab’s excellent service—just don't expect a high-quality culinary experience.

We were looking to have a quick bite before we go to our next destination around 7:30 pm on Saturday and we search a tapas restaurant close to us and we came across this restaurant. We wanted to seat outdoor and they have a big area for the outdoor dining which was amazing. The menu was simple with photos so no language barrier issues. Alvaro was our waiter and he was amazing. He was tentative and spoke English well so it made our order even easier. The staff were very friendly and we loved our experience. We wanted to stay for a drink for few minutes but we stayed for food and almost an hour. Definitely if you are thinking to relax, have great food and amazing service this is your place

Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard. Tapa Tapa is exactly that. A relaxed spot for sharing a few tapas, having a cold beer, and taking a break from exploring Madrid.
The tortilla was freshly made, the Iberian ham was exactly what you’d expect in Spain, and the croquetas disappeared much faster than planned. Nothing overcomplicated—just good ingredients done well.
If you’re looking for an authentic local tavern, this isn’t it. But if you want a lively atmosphere, reliable tapas, and a place where it’s easy to sit longer than you intended, Tapa Tapa is a solid choice.

This place is just PERFECT. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, and super friendly staff!! 10/10 recommend!
The seafood here is absolutely amazing, and I REALLY RECOMMEND the Black Rice - honestly a 15/10 dish, incredibly rich and divine. If you like seafood, you will NOT go wrong. The prawns and baby squid were also REALLY GOOD!
Huge thanks to the Rouss for being so accommodating and helpful, and to Isabel and Agustin for being such wonderful, attentive servers. You guys made our night even better.
The restaurant is very clean and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was truly a great dining experience - I’ll definitely be back!

It’s just very much in the center. Self service so no service charge for sitting outside.
But the patatas bravas were cold, croquetas were not so good.
Bocadillos con calamares did not have and green which we were expecting as in the photo of the menu. We liked the beer and bocadillo con ramón more.
Jessica Simmons★★★★★
Food was great! Obviously not the best quality tapas across Madrid, but for the price I was very impressed.
Service was very quick even on a packed evening. Try to get a table outside for the best atmosphere (warning- you cannot book ahead for the terrace so queue can be very long)

This bar is a lively and affordable spot in central Madrid, just steps from the Royal Theatre. It offers a casual, bustling atmosphere that makes it easy to drop in for a quick bite or a relaxed meal. The space is bright, the patio is refreshing and the service is friendly.
The menu focuses on classic Spanish tapas at very reasonable prices, with plenty of small plates to mix and share. There are many options to choose from and pair with wine or sangria.
Aurora Dudas★★★☆☆
The prices are really cheap but you can see that in the quality of the food and drinks. You have to order and pick up the food and drinks by yourself. The table is dirty and the chairs are also not really clean.

Really love this place. A hidden gem of Madrid with Andalucian vibes. Clean, with great services and friendly staff. Tasty food at affordable prices. Great variety of dishes and tapas. Good deal for the table of four toasts. I would recommend to make a reservation or be there before 13:00.

Delicious food at a very reasonable price. The wine was great as well. We tried a few different tostas and all were lovely.
Noemi Bontempo★★★★★
We were a group of six and went there around seven in the evening without reservation and got a table without a problem. The place seems small but it has another room downstairs where you can sit. The waitress was really nice and suggested us to try their specialty which hate their sandwiches.
So we each choose a different kind to try as many as possible and we weren’t disappointed. The bread was huge for the price and everyone of them was delicious. To drink we all hat either a soda or beer. They don’t have Radler there but they gently offered to mix it themselves with a lemonade.
All in all a great place for tapas at a low price and with very good taste. Will definitely come back!
seçil Alaca★★★★★
Amazingly delicious tapas! The place looks small and full when you enter but go in anyway. They have more place at downstairs. It is a very local place and they don’t have English menu. You need to use translation tools to order also 🙂 the vegetarian options are limited but so delicious! The one with caramelised onion is a bless for the mouth!!

Best tostadas in Madrid. The goat cheese and caramelized onion one is amazing !! However, the duck pate was revolting.

Taberna del Alabardero is a delightful authentic Spanish restaurant. The décor is quirky and relaxed and very interesting with all the walls adorned with photos, trinkets and memorabilia from the past. The staff are friendly, well dressed, very welcoming and old school silver service professional. The food is varied, traditional and absolutely delicious. The restaurant is located in walking distance to many of the major attractions of Madrid. I would highly recommend enjoying a relaxed lunch or dinner at Taberna del Alabardero.

4 of us had a lovely dining experience here on Friday evening. The restaurant is very nice, located next to the opera house. The food was amazing, the decor of the restaurant was very nice and the staff extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. Our waiter for the evening was happy to advise us on our menu choices and we very much enjoyed our time in the restaurant thanks to his service. Unfortunately we didn’t get his name but I do know that he spent some time working in Banbury in the UK. Thank you for making our dining experience so enjoyable!

The food, the service and everything was absolute PERFECTION. We had a group of 12 on Sunday evening (08/06) that we booked ahead of time. The staff was very attentive, friendly and the food was out of this world. The restaurant is very traditional and has a lovely charm to it. I personally felt guilty of not being able to finish my main dish it was that good. If I could give them 10 stars I would! Thank you to everyone who made our evening a very memorable and amazing!

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign.
We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.
Tips for Enjoying Tapas Near the Royal Palace
To make the most of your culinary adventure in this historic neighborhood, understanding the local customs and logistics will significantly enhance your experience and help you avoid common pitfalls.
Go Early or Go Late: Spanish dining times differ greatly from the rest of Europe. If you want a quiet seat, arrive right when the bars open for lunch (around 1:00 PM) or dinner (8:30 PM). If you want the vibrant, standing-room-only atmosphere, arrive after 2:30 PM for lunch or 9:30 PM for dinner when the locals get off work.
Look for the Menu del Día: While tapas are the focus, many of these bars offer a "Menu del Día" at lunchtime. This fixed-price menu usually includes a starter, a main course, bread, a drink, and dessert or coffee. It is often the best value for a sit-down meal in the city center, but it is usually only written in Spanish on a chalkboard.
Stand at the Bar vs. Sitting: In many traditional spots, prices differ based on where you consume your food. Standing at the bar (barra) is usually the cheapest option. Sitting at a table (mesa) or on a terrace often incurs a small surcharge. If you are on a budget, do as the locals do: stand, eat, and move on to the next stop.
Know Your Portions: Tapas are small, bite-sized portions often served free with a drink in the most traditional bars. A "ración" is a full plate meant for sharing, and a "media ración" is a half plate. When ordering for a group, a good rule of thumb is two to three raciones per person, ordered gradually rather than all at once.
