10 Best Tapas Bars Near Museo Nacional del Prado

After an afternoon spent wandering the hallowed halls of the Museo Nacional del Prado, gazing at the masterworks of Velázquez and Goya, a specific kind of hunger inevitably sets in. It is a hunger not just for sustenance, but for a continuation of the Spanish cultural experience—one that moves from the canvas to the plate. The neighborhood surrounding the museum, known as the Barrio de las Letras and the Jerónimos district, is steeped in history and literary lore.

While the area is frequented by tourists, it remains a bastion of authentic Madrid hospitality for those who know where to look. The Spanish tradition of "tapeo"—hopping from bar to bar to sample small plates—is not merely a meal; it is a social ritual. It is the perfect way to decompress after absorbing the weight of art history and to mingle with locals who have just finished their workday.

However, navigating the immediate vicinity of a major landmark can be treacherous, often leading travelers to overpriced, lackluster establishments designed for high turnover. To truly experience the culinary soul of Madrid, one must step a few blocks away from the main entrance and seek out the establishments that prioritize quality ingredients and atmosphere. You want the places where the sherry is poured generously and the tortilla is still slightly runny in the center.

This guide aims to bridge the gap between cultural sightseeing and culinary excellence. We have curated a list of establishments that offer not only exceptional food but also a genuine sense of place. These are bars where the bartenders remember regulars, where the décor tells a story, and where the jamón is carved with reverence.

Whether you are looking for a quick stand-up bite of a classic tapa or a leisurely seated meal of modern Spanish cuisine, this area has something to satisfy every palate. The key is knowing which door to walk through and what to order once you are inside. We have done the legwork so you can focus on the flavors.

Below, you will find a selection of the finest tapas bars and taverns located within a comfortable walking distance of the museum. Each offers a distinct personality and a menu that respects the deep culinary traditions of Spain while occasionally offering a modern twist. These are the places where the locals go to avoid the tourist traps, ensuring your post-museum experience is as memorable as the art itself.

We only went in for drinks at the bar but this place was absolutely adorable. The vibe was perfect and by the time we left there was a line out the door. Definitely make reservations! We tasted two very different vermouths and they were both spectacular. My husband had the pork belly tapas and said it was very good, as well.

What a fantastic place to sit, eat and drink. The decor is great the background music not too loud. We ordered food, iberico ham and fries. Along with a coffee and two cokes. These came to the table soon after. It tasted great couldn't fault any of it. The server was polite, friendly and very sympathetic to my attempts at Spanish. I can highly recommend eating here.

One of the most disrespectful Bar I Ever saw. A good example of customer Not beeing respected. The bar Keeper told US to shut our mouth and be quiet and finally to leave Even that we were 10 people and just wanted to have a Nice bar visit. I would Never Ever recommend some body to go to that direspectful guy in that bar! Thousand better options to go. Dont waste your time.

We had a great time at Revoltosa Prado. The drinks were excellent and the tapas were really delicious. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and nicely served. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, making it a perfect place to stop for drinks and a bite to eat while exploring Madrid. We would definitely recommend it.

We happened to be staying in a hotel near this restaurant and stopped in for dinner. It was absolutely amazing. The standouts for us were the tomato and burrata dish, as well as the crispy pork belly. Both were so extremely flavourful and satisfying. We also tried the fried artichoke and burger, which were excellent. We then had the fried sobao for dessert and loved it. I would definitely dine here again specifically for the tomato and pork belly.

The place was quite ok. The food was good but nothing that I blew my socks off. I felt like the restaurant itself was a bit touristic. Staff was accommodating and nice.

Incredible restaurant! The food tasted extremely fresh and authentic and was served quickly. Marci (I believe he’s the owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Even though there wasn’t a table available for my party when we arrived, we only had to wait for less than 10 minutes. Now about the food. Each bite kept getting better and better! We ordered the Jamon Imperico, Bull Tail Gyoza, Honey Eggplant and the Crispy Fried Pig Ear and all of them were delicious! This was also enough food for 4 people. The jamon especially was some of the best we had during our trip. We would definitely come back!

Great place for tapas. There might be a bit of a wait, but totally worth it. Everything was super delicious, staff was nice.

Although the atmosphere seemed inviting, we were disappointed in the end. First, the service was a bit slow. And not the friendliest we had encountered while on our trip. So not a good start. When reviewing the menu, we ordered several tapas for the table. Once they arrived, we sampled all and felt the food lacked freshness compared to all the others we tried over the last several days.

Yummy food! Good portions! Good drinks! Nice small place with good service. The guys are funny too. Gave us Americans some shots and recommendations for churros as they were closing late on a Sunday night. Awesome experience! The area outside is very nice too. Shops, more restaurants and good views.

Great first menu del dia experience! I got the plato del dia (some sort of cous cous) which was simple but really good and fresh, as well as the churrasco patatas, with a thin sauce that was cumin-heavy but right up my alley. All for 13,50€ which was really worth it. I’m not sure if I was meant to get a dessert (I saw other tables get some sort of flan but maybe they just forgot) but it would’ve made it even more worth it. They got quite busy around 1pm but service kept up pretty well.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner here in Madrid after walking by in the afternoon and seeing people outside eating enormous bowls of mussels. Our server was very friendly and the food was delicious. Besides the mussels, we also enjoyed wonderfully garlicky scallops and a ravioli entree. Highly recommended!

Service was really good, servers were very helpful by explaining about the food. And, food was amazing especially the Olivier salad with tuna and prawns with Sardinia bread. Highly recommended.
Chris Hecht★★★★★
We were looking for something more substantial than tapas when we came across this restaurant. We had the tuna carpaccio, the gnocchi, and the organic chicken. Everything was cooked to perfection. The gnocchi was loaded with umami from the right amount of gooey cheese, with an accent of Iberian sausage and red sauce. The carpaccio with apples and cherry tomatoes was a great match on a hot day, and the organic chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The service was warm and friendly, and they had a wide assortment of drinks and desserts. Probably the best meal of our trip.

We had a wonderful visit for tapas. The food (pictured) was excellent and the service was truly top-notch. I was grateful to use my fledgling Spanish skills and also grateful for the server's grace with my attempts. This was a memorable meal on our trip! Definitely recommend checking out La Menina for an awesome night out in Madrid!

One of the many tapas places on Calle de Jesus. It’s very busy so be prepared to wait for a table or counter space. Ordered the chicharron and the brioche de gambas. The pork is sliced thin and very flavourful, almost like roast pork. The shrimp toast was mixed with some aioli and served on nicely toasted bread. While the food is delicious, prices are very high for what you get.

One of our favorite meals in Spain! As soon as you step into the restaurant, you can feel the passion for good food and a good time. The sandwiches and cheese fritters are absolutely incredible! Will be retuning time and time again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Hidden Gem in Madrid We came to Casa Toni in the evening for some tapas and drinks and absolutely loved it. From the moment we arrived, it felt authentic and welcoming — you can even see the food being freshly prepared through the window. The waiter gave us such a warm welcome, the service was outstanding, and every single dish was delicious. We loved it so much that we came back again the next day for lunch, and it was just as good! A wonderful little family-run restaurant with traditional food, great atmosphere and genuinely lovely people. Nothing fancy or touristy — just proper Spanish food made with heart. 🇪🇸❤️ A true hidden gem in Madrid!
Da Huizache★★★★★
€8.20 for a 330 ml beer (“tercio”) and a half portion of oreja. It’s not as crispy as the one at Casa Amadeo, but it’s less oily, more generous, and better cooked. Unlike Casa Amadeo, they don’t charge a bread and table service fee. Touristy but goodie !
Dominik Wroblewski★★★☆☆
Led by positive opinion on YouTube and online reviews we came to try pig ears and prawns in garlic. However, our impression felt short due to quite underwhelming lack of strong flavour of the dishes. For somebody who's not used to tapas, we found the portions rather small which left me hungry. The prawns in garlic were astonishingly tiny and their quality didn't match our expectations for the price we paid. The olive oil felt excessively diluted. My partner enjoyed pig ears - they were prepared in a crispy, unique way that we've not encountered before. They were not my favourite and the sauce didn't help - but it's just my personal preference. I also decided to try Gazpacho for the first time which was OK. On the positive side is that I believe the dishes are served in a traditional way and the service was quick, efficient and the atmosphere friendly. Pictures of the dishes attached - total bill nearly €27.

You know the food is good when you see the chef pealing the shrimps right in front of you! Ordered a savory vermouth to go with the garlic shrimp. The store was complete packed during late afternoon, owner still waved and let me in although they were about to close. Sat me at the bar table and brought me the sizzling shrimps in minutes.
Darby Choi★★★★★
This place was featured by Mark Wiens on Youtube and did not disappoint. In fact we came here for a second visit. You can dine in upstairs as well. Here are some of the dishes we tried... 1. Pig ears with spicy sauce 2. Fried braided lamb intestines 3. Spicy house chorizo 4. Fried boquerones (achovies) 5. Potatoes with folded egg and chorizo 6. Special Iberico lean fillets The service is relatively quick and the portions are decent for tapas. If you are feeling adventurous and looking to eat some serious Spanish tapas and comfort food then definitely add this to your bucketlist. Thank you Casa Toni. Till next time.

Atmospheric wine bar in the heart of Madrid with that slightly chaotic, effortlessly cool Madrid style. The place is always buzzing - packed, loud, cheerful, and full of life. The interior feels artistic but with a playful sense of humor. Very solid price–quality ratio. It’s rare to find a place that feels this lively and authentic while still remaining very reasonably priced. During our stay in Madrid, we ended up coming back almost every day. From the tapas, don’t miss the tosta with baked goat cheese and caramelized onion (tosta de queso de cabra con cebolla caramelizada) - absolutely delicious, especially with a glass of vermouth (the legendary vermouth con grifa, served with a slice of orange!) or red wine. They offer several wines by the glass, and we highly recommend trying Bardos. For a main dish, the braised Iberian pork cheeks in wine (carillada iberica al vino) were outstanding - rich, tender, and full of flavor. Service is quite restrained, sometimes even a bit stern, but never rude. With such a lively atmosphere and very reasonable prices, this place is an absolute gem. We will definitely come back.

Los Gatos is a classic Spanish tapas bar with a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The menu sticks to traditional favourites, simple and familiar, exactly what you expect from a place like this. The food doesn’t particularly stand out, but it also doesn’t disappoint. It’s solid, consistent and easy to enjoy. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall experience, and the place has a good, easygoing vibe. Overall, not a place that will surprise you, but a dependable stop for a casual drink and some tapas in Madrid.
Leon Heutmekers★★★★★
Los Gatos in Madrid is a feast for both the eyes and the appetite. The interior feels like stepping into a vintage Spanish postcard: dark wood, marble counters, old photographs, and shelves packed with bottles that seem to whisper decades of late-night conversations. It’s cozy but buzzing, elegant without trying too hard — the kind of place where tradition and atmosphere do most of the talking. The food lives up to the setting. The tapas and small dishes are consistently delicious, perfect for sharing and discovering. From classic tortilla and croquetas to beautifully prepared seafood and Iberian ham, everything feels fresh, generous, and full of flavour. It’s the ideal spot to stand at the bar or sit at the table with a glass of wine or beer. And the waiters are friendly and professional.
Ministry of Foodies★★★★☆
It's a classic tapas bar. Worth stopping for a quick drink and some tapas but it's loud and crowded so maybe not something that would be particularly relaxing for long leisurely meals. The food is decent without being exceptional.

Typical place to taste some tapas and have a spanish beer and feel a real spanish way of living, especially if you are moving through life too quickly🫠

Great restaurant with a bar area at the front and tables at the back. The tables for 2 are tiny and you are very close to the next table, we were lucky in that both neighbouring tables were finishing up as we arrived. Service was very efficient. Food was delicious. We had a bottle of wine (16.50),baby squid with salad, tortilla and a beef dish. The squid was so good we ordered a second portion. The bill came to a reasonable 42.40

We had a wonderful time at Taberna El Sur. The service was amazing as was the food. It was very busy, despite being fairly early on a Monday evening, and the crowd looked to be made up of more locals than tourists, which is always a good sign. We had the iberico plate, moussaka, pork cheeks, octopus and garlic prawns. The only slight miss was that the prawns had a bit of grit in them, though the flavor was great. We tried a number of Spanish wines, each better than the last. Highly recommend.

we had a fantastic experience dining here! first of all, the restaurant is small but cozy and clean, with the staff welcoming us in as soon as we stepped through the door. the menu is english-friendly, so it was easy for us to order traditional spanish food. my favourite was the Chipirones a la plancha, the squid 🦑was seasoned well and cooked to perfection, happiness in every bite! the mayo paired really well with it, as well as the fresh salad. it was also nice to try the ham/mushroom croquetas and Tortilla de Patatas 🥔. the sweet and refreshing sangria was also the perfect drink alongside the dishes on a hot day. the host also gave us complimentary bailey shots after our meal, which was so nice 🫶 really recommend this place if you're looking to try some traditional, authentic spanish food and tapas!!! 💪🍷

We dined here as a group of three and had a great experience. The food was really delicious, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made our meal even more enjoyable. Definitely a great place to enjoy Spanish food in Madrid. Highly recommended!

This was not our first visit to this restaurant. We have been a number of times before, but I decided it was time for an update. This little bar is not a super deluxe dinning establishment, it is a wonderful Taberna with a good range of drinks including vermont on tap, typical of so many bars in Madrid. The wine list is small with a reasonable selection of good priced wines. A wonderful selection of starter and main dishes to enjoy. Don't over order there isn't the space on your table, service is good even when very busy. Tables are small and the stalls for table eating are smaller than most, but don't let this deter you, there is a bench seat against the wall running both sides of the entire length of the dinning area. It always appears to be busy so it can feel a little cramped, but that all adds to the atmosphere. During our meal we spoke to our neigbouring tables on one side a couple from Canada who first visited with their son and this was their second visit. On another table sat 4 young students they dine here regularly. Considering this the age ranges from young 20's , a couple in their 50's and us two young at hart retired 69 & 73 year oldies. I hope this all helps explain the warm welcome and wonderful atmosphere that makes this restaurant our favouite when visiting Madrid and I do suggest you give it a try, but remember it is a bar not a 5star restaurant, but excellent value for money Our bill may not be typical of others but we did go a little overboard with 4 starters between us, 2 mains and a shared desert not to mentioning bottles of wine, water, beer, liquors and coffees. Our total spend does include our tip for the great service.

A small restauran with relaxed vibe compared to the noise and hustle of the nearby streets. Food was presented lovely, we tried salmorejo soup, manchego cheese platter, tomato toasts and Mediterranean salad. Everything was fresh and delicious. Their prices are not low but more or less reasonable having in mind the touristy area around.

We somehow stumbled into this tapas bar and it impressed us so much. The owner was very efficient and friendly and everything we ordered was great! Especially pleased with the Galatian octopus as it was flavourful and fantastically tender! The iberico cheek was a rare sight on the menu and was a delight to eat with the potato, Demi glaze sauce and bread!

Omg this was sooo good. We started with beers which have been wonderful on this trip though I have no idea what kind they are serve. Then we tried the sangria... chefs kiss... For food we tried the gambas al ajillo (sauted shrimp) ... so delicious... then the chuletas lechal (fried lamb chops) and the pulpo à la parrilla (grilled octopus) . Fantastic! We finished with manchego cheese platter. Yum. Overall it was a fantastic experience and Jose could not have been nicer to us. Highly recommended. If I could give 6 stars I would.

This is a great little taverna that is away from the crowded tourist streets and restaurants of Madrid. Be prepared to order in Spanish (which just means reading the menu and pointing when in doubt), as the waitress didn’t speak much English. This is also a plus in my book, since the place was more patronized by locals. We had the house salad (Ensalate de Casa) which looks s bit daunting, but is delicious. Just be sure to pair the salty bits, like the anchovies and olives, with the tuna and tomatoes. We were honestly surprised by how well the flavors (tuna belly, tomato, anchovies, green olives, and olive oil) went together. The chorizo is a must. In many places chorizo can get really salty, but this one was not. Very fresh, juicy, and the perfect amount of heat. Like the salad, the fries that came with the chorizo weren’t salty and added even more balance to the dish. We also tried the tripe. It was not at all what we feared. No weird odor or “funk” to it. Super tender, but unfortunately, way too salty to enjoy even with bread. We also

Los Rotos means the Broken Ones, sounds like a therapy group, but it’s actually where Madrid feeds the soul with carbs and cholesterol. Their famous huevos rotos usually comes with jamón, but we went rogue and ordered the version with cod fish.. because nothing says “vacation decisions” like swapping pork for something that swims. Turns out, it still worked. The eggs were perfectly broken, the potatoes beautifully confused, and the cod just salty enough to remind you of your past choices. Served in their trademark little metal pan, the whole thing looked like breakfast that gave up on structure, and won. Famous for their pan dishes, Los Rotos doesn’t bother with fancy plating. Everything’s dumped in the same trusty pan, like your abuela decided to serve straight from the stove just to save time and your dignity. The place is casual, noisy, and unapologetically alive.. kind of like Madrid itself after its third glass of vermut. Statistically speaking, Madrid has more bars than churches, and if you end up in the wrong one, you’ll pray. But in Los Rotos, you’ll only sin.. with extra potatoes and a perfectly dented metal pan.

Practical Tips for Enjoying Tapas Near the Prado

To make the most of your culinary excursion after visiting the museum, it is helpful to understand the local dining customs and logistics. Dining in Madrid operates on a different clock than in many other parts of the world, and knowing the rhythm of the city will significantly enhance your experience. The following tips are designed to help you navigate the tapas scene like a seasoned local, ensuring you get the best food and the most authentic atmosphere.

  1. Respect the Spanish Meal Schedule: The best time to visit these bars is generally between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM for lunch, or after 8:30 PM for dinner. If you arrive at 6:00 PM, you may find the kitchens closed and the bars serving only drinks. Plan your museum visit to conclude in alignment with these peak dining hours.
  2. Don’t Be Afraid to Stand: Many of the most authentic tapas experiences happen at the bar. Standing allows you to move freely, see the food on display, and interact with the bartenders. Do not wait for a table if you see a gap at the counter; claim your space and order directly.
  3. Order the "Especialidad de la Casa": While it is tempting to stick to familiar dishes like patatas bravas, every great tapas bar has a signature dish. Ask the waiter or bartender what they are famous for—whether it is a specific croqueta, a seafood dish, or a unique stew—and order that.
  4. Embrace the Vermouth (Vermut): While wine and beer are standard, Madrid has a deep love affair with vermouth. Drinking a glass of sweet red vermouth on tap, served over ice with an orange slice, is a quintessential pre-lunch or early evening ritual that pairs beautifully with olives and anchovies.
  5. Carry Cash for Small Purchases: While most modern establishments accept credit cards, smaller, older taverns may have a minimum spend for card payments or prefer cash for quick transactions at the bar. Having a few euros on hand will speed up your service and is appreciated by the staff.

Walking through the streets surrounding the Prado after a meal is one of the great pleasures of visiting Madrid. The neighborhood transforms as the sun sets, with the golden light hitting the historic facades and the sound of conversation spilling out from the doorways of the bars you have just left behind. It is a reminder that Madrid is a city that lives in its streets.

Ultimately, the goal of a great tapas crawl is not just to fill your stomach, but to slow down and absorb the atmosphere. The art inside the Prado captures the soul of Spain’s past, but the food and drink in the surrounding taverns capture the vibrant, living culture of Spain today. By choosing wisely, you ensure that your memory of the day is a complete sensory experience, from the stroke of a painter’s brush to the last bite of a perfectly prepared tapa.
