10 Best Shopping Areas Near CosmoCaixa Barcelona

Nestled at the foot of the Tibidabo mountain, CosmoCaixa Barcelona is more than just a science museum; it is a gateway to one of the city’s most elegant and walkable residential districts. While the famous flooded forest and interactive physics exhibits can easily occupy an entire morning or afternoon, the surrounding neighborhood of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi offers a distinctly upscale and relaxed retail experience.

Unlike the chaotic tourist traps of La Rambla or the crowded fast-fashion outlets in the Gothic Quarter, the shopping areas near CosmoCaixa cater to a discerning crowd. Here, you will find a curated mix of high-end boutiques, organic grocers, traditional Catalan pastry shops, and independent bookstores that serve the local community.

For visitors, this presents a unique opportunity to combine intellectual stimulation with authentic local commerce. Whether you are looking for a unique souvenir, a stylish outfit, or simply a quiet place to browse without the crush of downtown crowds, the "Zona Alta" (High Zone) of Barcelona has you covered.

The area is characterized by its wide, tree-lined avenues, Modernist architecture, and a slower pace of life. Because this is primarily a wealthy residential area rather than a tourist district, the shops here offer higher quality goods and a more personalized service experience.

Knowing where to go is essential, as the retail landscape is spread out across several distinct avenues and plazas rather than concentrated in one single mall. Some of the best shopping is hidden in plain sight on quiet corners or within converted historic buildings.

To help you navigate the retail landscape of the upper city, we have compiled a guide to the most rewarding shopping streets and centers within a short walk or quick tram ride from the museum. Get ready to trade lab coats for shopping bags as we explore the retail gems surrounding this cultural landmark.

Below, you will find the definitive list of the best places to shop, eat, and wander after your visit to CosmoCaixa.

Right on Barcelona’s waterfront, Maremagnum is a great place to combine shopping, dining, and a walk by the marina. It has a relaxed atmosphere with a mix of fashion stores, cafés, restaurants, and beautiful views of the boats and the Mediterranean. It’s an easy place to spend a couple of hours, especially after exploring the nearby waterfront. The location is one of the best features of this mall. Sitting outside with a drink or a meal while overlooking the marina was a nice break from the busy streets of the city. The shopping center is also close to attractions like the Columbus Monument, the Aquarium, and La Rambla.

I recently visited Centre Comercial Maremagnum during my trip to Barcelona, and it was one of the most enjoyable shopping and leisure experiences in the city. The location is absolutely fantastic, situated right next to the sea and surrounded by beautiful waterfront views. Walking around the shopping center while enjoying the fresh sea breeze creates a very relaxing atmosphere. The mall offers a wide variety of stores, including many well-known international and local brands. There are plenty of opportunities to find good deals and discounts, making it a great place for shopping enthusiasts. Whether you are looking for clothing, accessories, souvenirs, or everyday items, there is something for everyone. Another thing I really liked was the large selection of food and snack options. From quick bites and coffee shops to restaurants with outdoor seating, there are plenty of places where you can sit down, relax, and enjoy the surroundings. After shopping, it is wonderful to take a walk along the waterfront or simply sit near the beach and enjoy the view of the sea and boats passing by.The shopping center is clean well-maintained, and easy to navigate. The combination of shopping, dining, entertainment, and stunning seaside scenery makes Maremagnum much more than just a mall. I would definitely recommend Centre Comercial Maremagnum to anyone visiting Barcelona. It is the perfect spot to shop, eat, relax, and enjoy some of the best waterfront views in the city.

Came here more for the Time Out Market on the top floor, as I went to the one in Portugal. Wasn't as busy, so plenty of places to sit, even outside on the balcony overseeing the views of Barcelona. Some good choices for eatery so plenty to choose from. Just don't take too long to decide. There wasn't much stalls for dessert just to let you know, if you want something sweet.

Maremagnum is a large shopping and leisure complex located right by Barcelona’s waterfront in Port Vell. It’s known for its seaside setting, variety of shops and restaurants, and scenic views of the harbor. It was raining heavily when I visited, so staying in the mall turned out to be the perfect choice. The place is huge, with plenty of options for shopping and dining, making it easy to spend a few hours there. The port area just outside is also really beautiful – especially at night. The waterfront views and reflections make for amazing photos.

What a great place at the seaside of Barcelona, close to the huge and wonderfull aquarium. A bus stop in front of the door, easy connection to the metro and city. Lower floors have a shopping mall with many stores, topfloor is the TimeOut restaurant with dozens of different small (and huge) restaurants and bars. Lots of seats and tables, lots of types of food to chose from from simple tapas to sushi and exquisite meat. Prices vary from cheap to expensive. And one can even rent cellphone charges if needed. Nice outside with view of the harbour. Great place to wine and dine as well spent many hours just to enjoy the sights, food an drinks.

Visited Diagonal Mar and had a very enjoyable experience. The area offers a modern and relaxed atmosphere, combining shopping, dining, leisure, and coastal surroundings in a very appealing way. One of the highlights is the balance between urban convenience and open spaces. The neighborhood feels spacious, clean, and well planned, with wide walkways, modern buildings, and easy access to the nearby beach. It creates a refreshing contrast to the more historic parts of Barcelona. I especially appreciated the shopping and lifestyle options available in the area. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, retail stores, and entertainment spaces, making it a great place to spend time during the day or evening. The environment feels lively without being overly crowded, which adds to the comfort of the visit. The nearby seaside atmosphere is another strong point. Being close to the Mediterranean coast adds a relaxing element, with pleasant walking areas and scenic views that make the experience even more enjoyable. The area also feels modern, safe, and well maintained, making it suitable for families, tourists, and casual visitors alike. Public transport access is convenient, allowing easy connection to other parts of the city. Overall, a vibrant and modern part of Barcelona that combines shopping, leisure, and coastal charm. Diagonal Mar is definitely worth visiting for a relaxed and enjoyable city experience.

Diagonal Mall is one of the biggest mall in Barcelona. It has a lot of shops offering local and international brands. At the same time there is huge option for food and drinks. The multiplex offers new movies and opera and ballet shows. The service standard of the mall is top class. They have got the parking facility for 5000 cars with 3 hours free. Beside they have got 64 family sized parking spots and 54 specializes places for disabled people, great. There is a big area specially for children's entertainment. The shops are open from Monday to Saturday 9 to 9. Restaurants and leisure activities are open till 1 AM on weekdays and up to 3 on weekends and holidays. Worth visiting !!

Large mall, covers everything you’d expect. Got some clothes from Zara and had coffee and cake with my aunt. One practical note: the seating in the food area is mostly standard chairs, not great if you have mobility or comfort issues. We ended up at Starbucks which solved the problem but wasn’t ideal. Nothing special beyond that — it’s a solid, functional mall. Does the job.

Great mall with many different types of stores. There is a grocery store in the mall along with several playgrounds for kids. This mall definitely caters to every age from babies, toddlers, kids to adults and the elderly. The park on the terrace was very entertaining and is a great place for kids to exert their energy. The food court was huge with a wide variety of restaurants and stalls. Food prices however are not great and could be better. Line up at start bucks is long. Decathlon is huge and has all your travel needs. This mall is a short walking distance from both the subway and the beach, making it a very convenient location.

I visited L’illa Diagonal with my family and found it to be a pleasant shopping center to spend a few hours. It has a good mix of restaurants, cafés, clothing stores, perfume shops, and other retail outlets. The layout is attractive, there is a playground for children, and there is also a hotel and serviced apartments next to the mall. Parts of the mall are air conditioned while other sections are open-air, which gives it a different atmosphere. The restrooms were clean and well maintained, and I appreciated that there was an ATM available. Overall, it’s a comfortable place to shop, have a meal, or enjoy a coffee. We actually would have stayed for another hour if we had been able to store our shopping bags and luggage while walking around the mall. The only inconvenience we experienced was with the lockers. There were several types available, but all of them required coins. I didn’t have any coins, and even after asking a few stores if they could exchange my card payment for coins, they couldn’t help because of their cash handling systems. It would be much more convenient if at least some of the lockers accepted card payments or contactless payment methods.

I really love L'illa Diagonal. The layout of the building is thoughtfully designed, making it very comfortable to walk around and explore. It’s a family- and children-friendly place, with plenty of space and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s not just a shopping destination, but also a beautiful spot to take a break, and enjoy some quality time. Whether you’re shopping or simply strolling, it always feels pleasant and welcoming.

I’ve been a loyal customer of this mall for years. Its prime location and diverse range of shops make it a must-visit destination. I’ve discovered some hidden gems that offer unique local products. I’ll definitely be back, especially for their delectable ice cream!

Visited L'illa Diagonal and had a very enjoyable shopping and leisure experience. The shopping center has a modern and elegant atmosphere, offering a great combination of retail stores, dining options, and comfortable public spaces in one convenient location. One of the highlights is the variety of shops available. The center includes fashion brands, lifestyle stores, cafés, restaurants, and essential services, making it suitable for both casual browsing and dedicated shopping. The selection feels balanced and caters to a wide range of preferences. I especially appreciated the architecture and layout of the mall. The design feels spacious, clean, and easy to navigate, with wide walkways and comfortable seating areas that create a relaxed environment. Despite being a busy commercial center, the atmosphere remains comfortable and well organized. The dining options also add positively to the experience, providing good places to relax during shopping or meetings. The overall ambience feels modern, professional, and welcoming, making it enjoyable for both locals and visitors. The staff across the stores and facilities were generally friendly and professional, and the center overall felt safe, clean, and efficiently managed. Another strong point is the location, which is easily accessible from different parts of Barcelona and surrounded by a lively urban environment. Overall, a modern and well-maintained shopping center offering convenience, variety, and comfort. L'illa Diagonal is definitely worth visiting for shopping, dining, or simply spending time in Barcelona.

I visited Westfield La Maquinista during my stay in Barcelona, and overall it was a good shopping experience. The mall is large and offers a wide selection of stores, including most of the well known fashion brands, as well as a Carrefour hypermarket, making it convenient for both shopping and groceries. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafés, so finding something to eat is easy. One thing to keep in mind is that the mall is only partially air conditioned. Some areas are comfortably cooled, while others are open air, so visiting during the summer daytime can feel quite hot. The shopping center is clean, with well maintained restrooms and a spacious parking area. The overall design is pleasant and practical. While it may not be an especially impressive destination, it is a convenient and functional mall that has everything most visitors need in one place. Overall, I had a pleasant experience and would recommend it for shopping, dining, and everyday essentials.

Great Mall on the outskirts of Barcelona We loved this place, there are many shops, many cafés, etc. It is dog friendly so you can walk around with your dog and some boutiques allow them inside (not all). For food it is also great as they have a food court on the top floor with lots of options. Great Parking too, really big.
Frank Vingerhoed★★★★★
Nice big mall. Lot’s of food options. Apple Store. Carrefour and Le Roy Merlin. Shop till you drop

We’ve not checked before we come on a Sunday but it was closed. Westfield Glories is open during summer so I don’t understand why this one is closed. In general why is not opened all year around? Also it would be great if you could pay the parking at the gate at the exit like in Australia. Otherwise it’s good shopping centre, lots of shops, but on the weekends (on Saturdays) it feels crowded.
Talal Qadah★★★★★
Huge shopping center offering modern and spacious environment with popular brands as well as luxury brands. There is a variety of dining options and an entertainment area. Highly recommended to spend a full day to enjoy shopping, entertainment and dining. The parking is free of charge.

Arenas de Barcelona is a shopping center that, in my personal experience, feels quite average overall. From the outside, the building looks really impressive and massive, so I expected something more special inside, but once you go in, the variety of shops is actually quite limited compared to other malls in the city. That said, the most memorable part of the visit is definitely the rooftop. I really enjoyed going up there because it offers a great panoramic view of Barcelona, and it feels much more interesting than the shopping experience itself. It’s a nice spot just to relax for a while and look over the city. Overall, I would say it’s worth visiting mainly for the rooftop view, rather than for shopping.
Mohammad Diab★★★★☆
I visited Arenas de Barcelona and spent a few hours there before my flight. The building itself has an interesting history, as it was originally a bullring before being converted into a shopping mall. Once you’re inside, however, it feels like a modern mall, and there is very little that reminds you of its original purpose. The mall has several levels, although each floor is relatively compact. You’ll find a mix of fashion stores, sunglasses shops, technology retailers, and other everyday services, along with cafés, restaurants, public restrooms, and parking. One of the highlights is the rooftop terrace, which offers wide views across Barcelona. You can see both the mountains and the sea in the distance, and the Sagrada Família is also visible from the rooftop. There are a few viewing telescopes available if you want a closer look at the city. Overall, I wouldn’t consider it a destination mall, but if you are already in the area, it’s a good place to spend an hour or two, have a meal or coffee, and enjoy the views from the rooftop.
Zeeshan Zuberi★★★★★
Lovely 360 degree views of the city from the top. We just stopped by on our way to the hotel on the last day after a tiring day out. It was quick to get to the top floor and we were back on our way in 20 minutes. There were quite many dining places on the top floor but it was a bit early for dinner.
Izzy Van★★★★☆
Arenas de Barcelona It’s a mall located in what used to be a bullring, and I really like the design. It has a rooftop terrace with a viewpoint looking out toward the MNAC, the National Art Museum of Catalonia. If you’re here around the right time, you can also see the Magic Fountain show from this spot. It’s worth visiting and I recommend it for that reason, but I wouldn’t say it’s a mall with big-name stores. I wouldn’t go here to shop. Instead, I’d go for dinner at one of the restaurants on the terrace and just enjoy the view.
Robert Roberts★★★★★
Beautiful mall with such a unique design. This mall is in a round building that has a rooftop with 360 degree views of the city. There are so many options for shopping and also for dining. The one thing that I was taken aback by was paying for the restrooms. They are 1 euro to enter the restrooms however if you make a purchase at a store, you can ask for a QR code to scan to enter the restrooms without paying. Great place to visit while in Barcelona.

The last time I came to Barcelona. El Corte Inglés at Plaça de Catalunya was not open for a few days due to a major holiday. I finally shopped here today. Wow! I love this department store. It has 10 or more levels (including the supermarket and food court in the basement). I lost count of how many levels it really has. Lol! The store has everything you need for you, your family, your pets, and your house. It is truly one-stop shopping. I wish we had a store like this in California.
Maya Maya Official★★★★☆
My experience in the store was very similar to my experience at Macy's flagship store in New York city, great! With a notch up because more merchandise in the fragrances than Macy's , the food floor great, a lot gourmet, delicious food. Designers all what you want and more. Super fun !!! To shop, went there three days during my travel .
Sergei Nossoff★★★★★
El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya is truly a one-stop destination where you can find everything under one roof. From the latest kids’ toys and gifts to cutting-edge high-end electronics, premium home design items, fashion, cosmetics, and gourmet food — this place delivers on every level. The selection is vast yet well-curated, making it easy to move from shopping for family essentials to browsing luxury brands without feeling overwhelmed. Add to that the central location, excellent layout, and consistently professional service, and you get a shopping experience that’s both efficient and enjoyable. If you need one place in Barcelona that genuinely has it all, this is it.
Elie Ifrah★★★★★
El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya is definitely worth visiting if you are in central Barcelona. Its location is probably one of its biggest advantages, right on Plaça de Catalunya and within walking distance of many of the city's main attractions and shopping streets. The department store is huge and offers an impressive variety of products across multiple floors. You can find clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, perfumes, electronics, home products, food, souvenirs, and many well-known international and Spanish brands. It is particularly convenient when you want to do different types of shopping without having to visit several separate stores. Despite the size of the building and the number of people visiting, I found the store well organized and relatively easy to navigate. The staff I interacted with were professional and helpful when I needed assistance. Another advantage is that you can spend quite a lot of time here, especially if you enjoy browsing different departments. The location also makes it easy to stop by during a day of sightseeing without making a special trip. Overall, I had a very good experience at El Corte Inglés Plaça de Catalunya. It combines an excellent central location, a huge selection of products, recognized brands, and convenient shopping all in one place. I would recommend it both for serious shopping and simply for browsing while visiting Barcelona.
Damla Guray★★★★☆
Escribo sobre mi experiencia con la recogida en tienda. From the online page of the store was very practical and the process moved very quickly. When I went for in-store pickup, unfortunately, one of the 4 items was not ready, and since I had to return by ship on the same day, I wanted to cancel it. A black-haired lady who speaks English brushed me off quickly and left after saying something like ‘You can cancel it yourself when you see it's ready online." However, I was not satisfied with this answer and when I explained my situation and asked again to a very sweet lady named Mariona there, she completed the cancellation process in less than 5 minutes, gave me the document of the cancellation and processed it immediately. I thank her very much for respecting her work and helping me there🙏 Tax free area is on deck 9. Don’t forget to see the beauty of Barcelona from El corte Ingles..

Westfield Glòries is a big shopping mall with a huge variety of stores, making it easy to find almost everything in one place. The shopping center has a wide range of shops, restaurants, and fast food places to choose from. One of the best parts is its interesting layout. It features a lovely outdoor area where you can shop and dine when the weather is nice, as well as a cozy indoor section to escape to when it’s not. I definitely recommend checking it out, whether you're going by yourself or with family. In addition, the food court offers the same flexibility. You can eat in a lively outdoor space or relax in a more sheltered indoor area. This makes it a great spot for everyone!

A great shopping destination and conveniently located just a 7-minute walk from the Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel. The mall has pretty much everything you need under one roof, making it perfect for both tourists and locals. One of the highlights for families is the impressive dinosaur animatronics, which are a huge hit with kids and add a fun, interactive experience to the visit. The center also offers a good mix of local Spanish brands alongside popular retailers, giving visitors plenty of shopping choices. You’ll find stores for daily essentials, electronics, fashion, and much more, plus a spacious food zone with a variety of dining options. Whether you’re looking to shop, grab a meal, or keep the kids entertained, Gran Via 2 is a convenient and enjoyable place to spend a few hours.

The Gran Via 2 shopping center is located on Avinguda del Parallel, one of the main shopping streets in Barcelona. It's easily accessible by public transportation or on foot. Shopping Experience: The center offers a variety of stores, including clothing, electronics, and home decor shops. While it's not as large as some of the other shopping centers in Barcelona, it still provides a decent selection of brands and products. Atmosphere: The shopping center is generally well-maintained and clean, with a modern design. However, it can get quite crowded, especially during peak shopping hours. The center also hosts events and promotions, which can be a nice touch. Facilities: Gran Via 2 has a range of amenities, including restaurants, cafes, and a supermarket. There are also several entrances and exits, making it easy to navigate. Comparison: Compared to other shopping centers in Barcelona, such as La Roca Village or Diagonal Mar, Gran Via 2 is a more mid-range option. It's not as large or luxurious, but it still offers a decent shopping experience and a convenient location.

El Centre de la Vila is a compact shopping center located close to the Port Olímpic area, offering a more practical and low-key alternative to Barcelona’s larger malls. It feels especially convenient if you are in the nearby beach or marina zone rather than seeking a full-scale shopping destination. The atmosphere is relaxed and functional rather than flashy. Inside, you’ll find a mix of everyday services, small retail shops, and casual dining options. It’s not a place designed for luxury shopping or architectural impact, but rather for convenience—picking up essentials, grabbing a quick meal, or taking a break from the surrounding waterfront area. What stands out most is its accessibility. It serves as a useful stop when walking between the beach, the Olympic Port, and the nearby residential streets. During busy hours, it has a steady local flow, but it rarely feels overwhelming or tourist-heavy. It’s a straightforward neighborhood-style commercial center: practical, unpretentious, and useful, especially if you’re already in the Poblenou–Marina area and want something quick and close rather than a destination mall experience.

A decaying relic of time past. It feels like walking in to the 80s. Nearly everything has closed down, there's a leaky roof, lots of empty space and an eerie atmosphere. The remaining shops. cafes and restaurants are fine, but the whole place really needs a revamp.

I went to this shopping many times as I live close by. I experienced the decadence of the mall the last few years... The cinema is gone that gave great dynamic to it. And honestly everything goes gradually down. The toilets are day after day in horrible condition and not clean at all. The security guy goes constantly after people that get into the toilet to check on them but instead of checking the people he should check if they are clean.

I was sweetly surprised to see a supermarket close to my hotel. I was on a business trip when I discovered this on maps. I would say the people and the items offered at the supermarket were fresh and reasonably priced. But I would probably not be a good judge about prices because I'm not from Spain. Nevertheless, it was a good experience and I bought items from the store twice and found all that I wanted.

You can find all the things you forgot in this store! I bought a charging wire for a good price. Also has floats and bags and chairs - all the things you might need and forgot!

Tips for Shopping Near CosmoCaixa

To ensure your shopping excursion in the upper part of Barcelona is as seamless and enjoyable as possible, there are several local customs and logistical details you should keep in mind. Unlike the commercial centers in the city center, the Zona Alta operates on a slightly different rhythm, catering heavily to the local professional class and families. Understanding the local timing, payment norms, and geography will save you time and help you blend in with the residents.

  1. Time Your Visit with Local Meals.
Most independent boutiques and specialty shops in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi close for a "siesta" or lunch break, typically from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM or 5:00 PM. Plan your shopping for the late morning or early evening to avoid finding the metal shutters down.

  2. Carry a Mix of Payment Methods.
While major retailers and international brands accept all credit cards, some smaller artisan workshops, vintage stores, or traditional food stalls may have a minimum spend for card transactions. Carrying a small amount of cash (€20–€50) is advisable for grabbing a pastry or a small trinket.

  3. Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes.
While the area is well-connected, the distances between the various avenues (like Avinguda Tibidabo and Carrer Major de Sarrià) are longer than they appear on a map. The neighborhood is hilly, so leave the high heels at the hotel and opt for flats or sneakers.

  4. Look for "Forn de Pa" for Authentic Souvenirs.
Instead of buying generic keychains, step into a traditional bakery or "Forn de Pa." Here, you can purchase beautifully packaged local treats like "carquinyolis" (Catalan biscotti) or high-quality chocolate that make for excellent, authentic gifts to take home.

  5. Validate Your Integrated Transport Ticket.
If you take the historic Tramvia Blau (when operational) or the regular buses down the hill to the shopping districts, remember that these are integrated into the TMB network. A single ticket allows you to change lines within a 75-minute window, making it easy to hop between shopping zones without paying twice.

The charm of shopping near CosmoCaixa lies in the absence of urgency. You won’t find aggressive street vendors or overwhelming crowds here, allowing you to actually enjoy the architecture and the window displays. It is a place where you can leisurely compare a leather bag in a boutique before stepping next door for a perfectly pulled espresso.

Ultimately, a trip to this part of Barcelona offers a glimpse into how the city’s residents actually live and shop. By venturing just a few blocks from the museum’s doors, you can turn a simple educational outing into a full day of cultural immersion and high-quality retail therapy.
