12 Pharmacies in Puerto de la Cruz

Finding a reliable pharmacy is essential whether you are a resident managing a chronic condition or a traveler dealing with an unexpected sunburn or headache. Puerto de la Cruz, located on the northern coast of Tenerife, offers a robust network of healthcare facilities that cater to both local residents and the large international tourist population. Understanding how these establishments operate, including their extended hours and specific locations, can save you significant time and stress during your stay or daily life.

The Spanish pharmacy system is highly regulated, ensuring that the medication and advice you receive meet strict quality and safety standards. In Puerto de la Cruz, pharmacies are easily identified by a distinct green cross sign, often illuminated or animated. While most operate on standard commercial hours, the city adheres to a "farmacia de guardia" (duty pharmacy) schedule to guarantee that emergency medical needs are met 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When you visit a pharmacy in this coastal city, you will find that the staff is generally multilingual. Due to the high volume of visitors from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scandinavia, pharmacists are usually proficient in English and often German. This linguistic capability ensures clear communication regarding dosage, side effects, and the appropriate use of over-the-counter medications, which is crucial for safe healthcare.

The range of products available extends far beyond prescription medication. These establishments serve as one-stop shops for health and wellness, stocking everything from high-end dermo-cosmetics and baby formula to orthopedic supports and homeopathic remedies. If you are looking for a specific Spanish brand of skincare or need to replace a lost contact lens solution, the local pharmacies in Puerto de la Cruz are well-stocked to handle your request.

Navigating the local area is relatively straightforward, as most pharmacies are concentrated near the city center, the harbor, and the main tourist zones like La Paz and Martianez. You will often find them nestled among retail shops, cafes, and medical clinics. Many are located on flat, accessible streets, though some in the older parts of town may require navigating cobblestone pathways.

For those staying in resorts or apartments, it is wise to locate the nearest pharmacy on your first day. This proactive step prevents panic in the middle of the night should a child develop a fever or a traveler experience gastric distress. The local healthcare infrastructure is designed to be accessible, but knowing exactly where to go ensures you can react quickly if needed.

Below is a comprehensive list of reputable pharmacies in the area, offering convenient access and professional service.

GREAT PRICE AND FAST DELIVERY. I found the best price on Vichy spf50 Sun Lotion here and ordered 3 pieces online yesterday. They were delivered already this morning. The package even included a hand soap as a present. If they weren't out of stock I would have ordered more. Thank you for an awesome product and service. I will be back!

Very helpful staff; the male in the store spoke English a bit. He was very patient and polite! I have an allergy, he listened to my symptoms and gave me what I needed.

New number system doesn’t work as it’s possible to push in front of you! Most assistants really helpful but today assistant at desk one was impatient and rude after having long conversation with someone she knew
Antonio Marí★☆☆☆☆
A terrifying pharmacy. Very bad education. They make you wait a long time while they talk to their friends. If you order a drug, they do not notify you with a simple message when it has arrived. You enter healthy and leave sick or in a bad mood. I recommend avoiding it. P.S. Now understanding why the Port has lost its glamour.

I understand it's 1st of January, but still there should be a chemist available at all times. At 23:45 they were closed, clearly stating on the Google Maps that they close at 00:00. Thank you for nothing 👍

Extremely expensive , was sold a packet of 7 tablets of cetirizine for more that €6. For a reference this is a generic brand and will cost something like less than 50 cent. At the time i didnt check that it only has 7 tablets and its a not a pack of 30.

This place has a clerk named José Luis who's as bald as he is shameless. On Saturday, February 18th, I ordered a product that was supposed to arrive on Monday the 20th, and after calling for a whole week without getting a response, today, February 27th, a very nice girl answered, and I heard José Luis on the phone. I asked her to please put me through to the phone. He called me a liar, saying I hadn't ordered anything, when I could have ordered it at any other pharmacy. Judge for yourselves.

I happened to stumble upon it and was struck by the fact that they still respect the essence of traditional apothecaries. I went in looking for a cream I couldn't find, and the alternative they offered has been perfect. Excellent service from the entire team.

Scammers I went in asking for painkillers for my back pain. The staff seemed helpful and spoke fluent English, which made the experience feel reassuring at first. However, the tablets I was given didn’t work. When I later looked them up, I realized they had actually sold me turmeric without making that clear—everything on the packaging was written in Spanish. After checking online, I found the exact same turmeric selling for €10, yet I was charged €20.
Maciek★☆☆☆☆
Unfortunately, they are just ordinary scammers. I was offered paracetamol for 13 euros. When I made a surprised face and said that it was a bit too much, the seller started feeding me nonsense, claiming that his paracetamol was natural and worked better than regular ones, which is why it had such a high price. Yes, you read that right – he tried to convince me that paracetamol was natural. Is the person working there even a pharmacist? To me, this is just plain fraud and theft. Fortunately, a minute further, there’s another 24/7 pharmacy where I paid 0.65 euros for paracetamol.
Karl★☆☆☆☆
Never use this pharmacy! They are scammers!
mafelan lanmas★★★★☆
I was very satisfied with my experience at this pharmacy. They have a wide variety of excellent quality products, from facial care to supplements and personal hygiene items. The staff is very attentive and professional; they advised me with great patience and knowledge, helping me choose exactly what I needed. Furthermore, the store is clean, well-organized, and everything is easy to find. Without a doubt, a trustworthy place I will return to. Highly recommended!
Francisco Javier Miranda Velázquez★☆☆☆☆
Terrible service and exorbitant prices. I asked for Dramamine and they sold me a natural ginger-based product, almost twice as expensive as Dramamine, without even warning me. When I realized, after paying, I told them it wasn't what I needed and asked for a refund. They rudely replied that even if it wasn't what I wanted, I had to keep it. I absolutely do not recommend this business. There are several legitimate pharmacies just a few meters away.

Practical Tips for Visiting a Pharmacy in Puerto de la Cruz

Navigating healthcare in a foreign country—or even a busy local town—can be daunting if you are unprepared. To ensure your visit is efficient and successful, there are a few local customs and practical nuances you should keep in mind. The following tips will help you communicate effectively, understand the system, and get the exact care you need without unnecessary delays.

1. Look for the Green Cross and "Guardia" Signs
While most pharmacies close for a few hours in the afternoon for siesta and shut their doors at night, there is always one open. Every pharmacy door displays a sign indicating the "Farmacia de Guardia" for that day. Check the window of any closed pharmacy, and it will point you to the nearest location that is currently serving customers, ensuring you are never left without access to medication.

2. Bring Your Passport or ID for Prescriptions
If you need to pick up prescription medication, especially if you are a tourist using a European prescription or a private doctor’s note, you must carry identification. Spanish pharmacists are legally required to verify identity for certain controlled substances. Having your passport or national ID card ready speeds up the verification process significantly.

3. Don’t Hesitate to Ask for a "Similar" Brand
Spanish pharmacies often operate with generic medications (genéricos) that are chemically identical to brand-name drugs but significantly cheaper. If the pharmacist quotes a price for a well-known brand that seems high, politely ask, "¿Hay una versión genérica?" (Is there a generic version?). This local knowledge can save you a considerable amount of money on over-the-counter painkillers and antihistamines.

4. Ask About "Medicamentos Publicitarios" for Common Ailments
Unlike in many countries where painkillers like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol are sold in supermarkets, in Spain they are exclusively sold in pharmacies. However, they are categorized as "advertising medicines" and do not require a prescription. You can simply walk in and ask for "Ibuprofeno" or "Paracetamol," and the pharmacist will provide you with the correct dosage and instructions.

5. Check the Holiday Schedule
Puerto de la Cruz celebrates numerous local and national holidays. During these days, almost all pharmacies close, leaving only the duty pharmacy open. This often results in longer queues. If you anticipate needing a refill of a regular medication, try to visit the pharmacy a day or two before a public holiday to avoid the rush and ensure you don’t run out.

Understanding the layout and operational hours of pharmacies in Puerto de la Cruz allows you to focus on enjoying the beautiful botanical gardens, the black sand beaches, and the vibrant local culture. Whether you are seeking relief from a minor ailment or managing a serious health requirement, the city’s pharmaceutical professionals are equipped to help.

By utilizing the list provided and following the local tips, you can navigate the healthcare landscape with confidence. The standard of care in Tenerife is high, and the pharmacists here take pride in offering personalized, discreet, and efficient service to everyone who walks through their doors.
