Marbella is often associated with glitzy marinas, designer boutiques, and exclusive beach clubs, but the true soul of this Costa del Sol destination lies in its natural coastline. Stretching across nearly 27 kilometres, the shoreline offers a remarkable variety of landscapes, from bustling urban sands to secluded rocky coves framed by protected dunes. Whether you are a sun-seeker looking for the perfect spot to unroll a towel or an active traveller eager to explore coastal trails, Marbella delivers an unexpected depth of outdoor experiences.
The microclimate of the region is one of its greatest assets, providing more than 300 days of sunshine a year. This makes coastal walking a viable activity in almost every season, including the mild winter months when the light is soft and the trails are quiet. The Mediterranean vegetation, characterized by umbrella pines, wild rosemary, and dwarf palms, adds a fragrant backdrop to many of the routes that hug the shoreline.
For visitors, understanding the geography of the coast is key to planning the perfect day. The area is broadly divided into distinct zones, each with its own character. To the east, the beaches tend to be wider and backed by residential communities, while the western stretch towards Estepona features more natural, rugged terrain with impressive sand dunes and watchtowers dating back to the 16th century.
The urban centre of Marbella offers convenience, with the famous Paseo Marítimo providing a seamless connection between the marina and the old town. This palm-lined promenade is not just a walkway; it is the social artery of the city, where locals take their evening paseo and visitors stop for chiringuitos serving fresh espetos de sardinas. The ease of access here means you can combine a cultural morning in the old town with an afternoon dip in the sea without ever needing a car.
However, to truly appreciate the wild beauty of this stretch of the Andalusian coast, you must venture beyond the manicured lawns and beach clubs. The coastal paths that wind through the Dunas de Artola and around the Cabopino port offer a glimpse into the landscape before mass tourism arrived. These protected areas are havens for birdlife and native flora, providing a serene contrast to the energetic pace of the city centre.
Water quality and safety are high priorities here, with many of Marbella’s beaches holding the Blue Flag status. This ensures that the sand is clean, the water is tested regularly, and lifeguards are present during the high season. For families, this certification provides peace of mind, while for swimmers and paddleboarders, the calm waters of the Mediterranean offer an inviting playground.
Before setting out, it is worth considering the rhythm of the day. The Spanish sun is at its strongest between 2 pm and 5 pm, so early morning walks or late afternoon swims are often the most comfortable. Packing a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a light layer for the sea breeze will ensure you are prepared for whatever the coast reveals around the next bend.

The seven kilometre stretch of walkway from Puerto Banus to marbella, would have to be one of the mast scenic walks on the costa, beat done on a lovely sunny day, there are many free toilets to use along the way that are frequently cleaned, there are also may cafes and restaurants along the stretch, for a rest or lunch. Definitely a must do when visiting the Costa del Sol.

Bicyclists and people on motorised vehicles are rendering this path dangerous for people with children or dogs. Not all mind you, but enough to keep me from walking here. Such a shame, a lovely walk with lots of beaches and vistas. Plenty of watering holes along the way too.

Dunas de Cabopino is a beautiful spot and definitely worth visiting if you're in the area. The dunes and surrounding natural scenery are stunning, making it a great place to take a walk, relax and enjoy the landscape.
The atmosphere is peaceful and feels very different from the more built-up parts of the Costa del Sol. It’s especially nice to visit when the weather is good, and the combination of nature, beach and impressive views makes it a lovely place to spend a few hours.
A great little escape from the busier tourist areas. Definitely recommended!

I always feel almost at home here; a certain nostalgia remains, and it's a Spanish Saint-Tropez. It's lovely to be here, enjoying the weather and the views. I always choose to visit in the off-season to avoid the countless crowds. Now is the time. You'll find everything in Marbella, and there's a good chance it will stay in your heart. Enjoy the peaceful days and admire the beauty of the area, all the way to Gibraltar and the African coast (visible from the beach).

A perfect stroll along the coastline on a path which is getting longer every year. Eventually the plan is to be able to walk the length of Málaga province's coast, but that is still some way in the future.
Martin Thackeray★★★★☆
I hired a bicycle and followed the coast path as far as I could to Marbella. Unfortunately the path route is broken by extensive development in some places, involving detours far inland and on busy roads. The paths that do exist are in good condition to cycle.
Not being able to follow the coastline is a sure sign of over-development in my opinion.

I was pleased that I could now cross the river at Guadalmansa. Bear in mind that there is virtually no shade on the route at all

Playa del Duque – a cozy beach near Puerto Banús
A nice sandy beach in a very convenient location — Puerto Banús is literally a few minutes' walk away. There are many restaurants and cafes around where you can grab a bite to eat after the beach. The beach itself is quite narrow, but cozy. It is suitable for both tourists and locals — the atmosphere is calm and comfortable.
The main advantage is the sand. Unlike many other beaches nearby, there are no stones here, so it is nice to go into the water and lie on a towel. We come here from time to time, especially when we want a quiet holiday by the sea. In general, the beach does not stand out in any way, but due to the sandy shore and convenient location, it remains one of our favorites.

The beach is beautiful, with soft sand and a great atmosphere. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars nearby, and the live music creates a really enjoyable vibe, especially in the evening. The only downside was that there was quite a lot of seaweed and marine plants in the water, which made swimming less enjoyable. Overall, it's still a lovely place to spend the day.

We wanted to go there for a bbq, because we saw that there was a bbq spot, but it turned out you needed to make a reservation at the Ayuntamiento de Marbella 3 days before to get a permit to use it, the beach looked nice but that ruined the day.
Also there isn't any stores you'd usually find close to beaches where you'd buy drinks/ snacks, most of the stores close by were autoshops, closest store was almost 1km away.

A beach with a unique charm and a vibrant atmosphere!
Playa del Cable is a truly special spot in Marbella. What makes it unique is the old iron mining structure rising from the sea, providing a spectacular backdrop that is perfect for memorable photos, especially at sunset. The beach is spacious with fine sand, ideal for long walks, volleyball matches or just relaxing under the palm trees. The atmosphere is full of positive energy and relaxing at the same time. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beach with personality and special landscapes!

Tips for Exploring Marbella’s Coast
To make the most of your time along this stunning stretch of the Mediterranean, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The following tips are designed to help you navigate the beaches and trails with confidence, ensuring you find the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure while respecting the natural environment.
Time your visit strategically. The beaches can get crowded in July and August, so aim for late May, June, or September when the water is still warm but the crowds have thinned. For coastal walks, early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography and the most comfortable temperatures.
Wear appropriate footwear. While many urban beaches are accessible in flip-flops, the coastal paths and boardwalks through the dunes require sturdier shoes. If you plan to explore the natural areas around Cabopino or the Artola dunes, wear trainers or hiking sandals with good grip to navigate the sandy and rocky terrain safely.
Embrace the chiringuito culture. A beach day in Marbella is not complete without a meal at a traditional chiringuito. These rustic beach bars serve fresh seafood, salads, and the iconic espeto de sardinas—sardines skewered and grilled over an open fire. Prices are often more reasonable at the smaller, family-run spots away from the main marinas.
Use public transport to avoid parking stress. Parking near popular beaches like Playa de la Fontanilla or Puerto Banús can be challenging in peak season. Marbella’s local bus service runs frequently along the coast, and many beach entrances are within walking distance of stops. If you do drive, arrive before 11 am to secure a spot.
Respect the protected dunes. The Dunas de Artola are a natural monument, and the boardwalks are there to protect fragile ecosystems. Stay on the marked paths, take your litter with you, and avoid picking the native flora. This ensures these beautiful landscapes remain intact for future generations to enjoy.
The coastline of Marbella is a destination that rewards curiosity. By alternating between the lively urban beaches and the quiet, windswept trails of the natural parks, you can experience two very different sides of the Costa del Sol in a single day. The contrast between the glamour of the Golden Mile and the raw simplicity of a pine-backed cove is what makes this area so uniquely compelling for travellers.
As you plan your itinerary, remember that the best moments are often unplanned—a spontaneous swim in a hidden cove, a conversation with a local fisherman, or a sunset viewed from a rocky headland. Allow yourself time to wander, to pause, and to simply listen to the rhythm of the waves. In Marbella, the coast is more than a backdrop; it is an invitation to slow down and savour the Mediterranean way of life.
