Fuengirola sits on the sunny Costa del Sol, stretching along more than seven kilometres of golden sand between Málaga and Marbella. While many visitors come for the beaches, this lively coastal town offers far more than sun loungers and sangria. It has managed to retain a distinctly Andalusian character despite its popularity with international travellers.
The old fishing quarter, Los Boliches, still feels like a traditional Spanish neighbourhood, with locals shopping at the morning market and families gathering in tapas bars. Meanwhile, the modern marina and promenade bring a cosmopolitan energy that appeals to visitors from across Europe. This blend of old and new makes Fuengirola an easy destination to explore on foot.
Because the town is relatively compact, you can visit several attractions in a single day without needing a car. The coastal train line connects the centre to the airport and nearby resorts, which adds to the convenience for short breaks. Even so, many of the best experiences are hidden just a block or two away from the seafront.
History lovers will appreciate the Moorish castle and Roman archaeological remains, while families can choose from water parks, animal encounters and child-friendly beaches. Food-focused travellers, on the other hand, will find everything from traditional chiringuitos to international restaurants. Whatever your travel style, Fuengirola adapts easily to your pace.
The best time to visit depends on what you want from your trip. Summer brings reliable heat and a buzzing atmosphere, while spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for walking and sightseeing. Winter remains mild enough for terrace lunches, making the town a year-round destination.
To help you make the most of your stay, this guide highlights the most rewarding attractions in and around Fuengirola. Each recommendation balances visitor appeal with practical details so you can plan your days effectively. You will find a mix of cultural landmarks, outdoor spaces and family-friendly activities.
The following list is ordered to help you experience the town logically, from the historic centre toward the coast and beyond. Use it as a flexible itinerary rather than a rigid schedule, especially if you are travelling with children or visiting during the hottest months.

Seriously one of the best zoos in europe, small but perfectly formed. The landscape immersion was perfect from giant jungle trees to lost temples all supported by excellent planting and a great selection of species. We bought our tickets online in the queue and got in straight away, if you plan on eating whilst you're there buy the tickets with a meal deal (only available online) we didnt the food wasn't too expensive but you definitely save with the tickets that includenthe food. The aquarium area is incredible make sure you go through several times just to make sure you see all the awesome theming and educational displays.

It was a great experience. We’ve visited many zoos across Europe, and this park left an impression on us as one of the closest to nature in terms of animal welfare. There won’t be an overabundance of animals here, but the aesthetic and ergonomic aspect for visitors is one of a kind. We really enjoyed the time we spent here, which flew by without us noticing. If you’re traveling with kids, this park absolutely has to be on your itinerary!
Emil Strøm★★★★★
What an amazing experience, I truly found that the park was designed with the animals best interest as a high priority. If you get to see them all you are lucky, and if they hide or lurk away in a bush or the shadows - then they get to be left alone, which I find lovely. A lot of awesome habitats and animals! I recommend for adults and children, great services at the location.
Roxana Perjaru★★★★★
A lovely place to visit! Very green, well maintained, and home to a wide variety of animal species. We really enjoyed walking around and seeing all the different animals. We were also lucky to join the free lemur tour at 4 PM, which made the experience even more special. A great visit, we loved it!

Honestly if you’re visiting fuengirola you must come here! It’s a beautifully designed small zoo which is very well maintained. The staff were all very friendly and the facilities were very clean. All of the animals seemed very well looked after. They have lots of information boards about each type of animals that they have here so it’s a great place to bring kids. There’s a playground and a restaurant plus a snack bar. Plenty of vending machines for drinks and snacks too. Lots of shade and spaces to sit and rest. We spent a morning here and really loved our visit. The gift shop had a great selection of things with amazing quality soft toys. Would 100% recommend.

Great amusement park in Fuengirola area, right by the beach. Easy system with the loaded card, we bought 30€ credit and got +18€ free so we had 48€ to spend on various attractions which was more than enough for our 3year old. Whole family had a great time, staff was friendly 🙂
John Noel Villordon★★★★★
First time i have seen strollers in the streets at 12 midnight... but the my 7 yr old kid had a lot of fun.
Lots of rides and fun stuff. Playgrounds well maintained and clean, ride prices reasonable, location acessible. 18:30 opening might be a bit late though.
Tyron Barnaby★★★★☆
Great spot for kids aged 4–5! It’s a compact park perfectly sized for younger children.
Expect to pay roughly €4 per ride, though the big trampolines are €6. The best value is the rechargeable card system: if you spend €20, you get 28 credits, which comfortably covered 3 rides each for my two kids.
Clean, safe, and the bonus credits make the pricing much more reasonable. Perfect for an hour of fun!

A very nice place to visit with children of different ages. There’s something for everyone to do. Most of the attractions are geared toward younger kids, but even our teenager found it interesting. The staff was absolutely fantastic. I highly praise and recommend this place!

Lovely amusement park , it's off season now so it's open from 5pm. There are a lot of activities for kids , and if you plan to visit it multiple times during your stay ,it's a good idea to buy more credits , so for example spend 30€ on the card and you will get a lot of free € credits. So it's better than spending 10€ every day. Thank me later. Toilets present there and food facilities too. Overall a great place , and will make your kids happy. All machines take visa cards or Their card with € top up , and displays remaining balance. It's a bit small but perfect for a quick 30-60min play.

Castillo Sohail in Fuengirola is an ancient fortress of Moorish origin, located on a hill at the mouth of a river by the Mediterranean Sea. It played an important strategic role and survived pirate attacks as well as battles during the Napoleonic era.
Today, it is not only a historical symbol but also a cultural center: nearby, the famous Marenostrum Fuengirola takes place, regularly hosting grand concerts with world-famous artists and attracting tens of thousands of spectators.

This is a free entry castle located at the western end of Fuengirola. It has an accessible entrance no stairs but a gradual slop up to the castle. Access to upper levels of castle wall via steep steps but the rest of the castle accessible with wheelchair . My partner and i both mid 60’s managed easily enough. Great view of the new bridge Puente de la Armada A great viewing point. Toilets at top / entrance to castle. Well worth a visit

This place is free. It was interesting to go visit. Didn't take long to go round as not much there but had little signs up that told you what the areas were used for and some old cannons. In the warehouse it had a small model of what it would have looked like back in it's day with buttons that explained bits. It was a very steep hill to walk up with a few steps. Love birds where nesting in the trees above the walk way.

Castle ok for a quick visit. Nice views from wall, but not much to see as it's a ruin. Free entry.

Busy-busy street along the sea. There is a good choice of bars and restaurants on the street but more expensive ones. Make sure you choose carefully the review before step into the restaurant!

Fuengirola has great wheelchair access and the promenade is level with dropped curbs and plenty of cafes and restaurants to stop off for refreshments. Accessible auto toilets every 500m on the beach accessed by path.

It's small but pretty place with some climbing equipment and swings etc for the kids. We've been twice but the cafe wasn't open either time. We later found out that it closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open the rest of the week and weekends. Please be aware that some photos posted showing animals etc. are from the nearby Biopark which is a zoo type venue (excellent to visit but not free).

Beautiful little park to take a break, away from the main road and noise. It's not very big, but really pretty with a cascading waterfall, fountains and streams. A little cafe to sit with a coffee and cake,(no bocadillos) a swing park and fenced area for dogs to have a run, chase a ball.

The most peaceful park, listen to the birds sing or walk the dog and let them play in a special playground especially for them. Water runs through the park with little bridges and lovely flowers and trees, a playground for children and a cafe. Lots of benches to sit and relax.

Just what you'd expect : fine sea front, excellent walking footpath and bikes and two wheelers have got their own lanes which reduces the accident risk for pedestrians a bit. An enormous range of cheerful shops selling cheap clothes and beachfront tack. Beautiful views across towards Málaga Bay and you can see the snows of the Sierra de Mijas on a fine day. Some very comfortable hotels as you'd expect. Very good for a busy walk if you like the sea and lots of people about ( except in mid winter when it goes pretty dead).
The eating out is borderline awful as you'd expect from all the passing trade. If youve got a palate that's comfortably numb, no problem. If you like to taste good food, find places in the parallel backstreets in Los Boliches a step further along the paseo and you could do well. But the seafront? Sorry. I don't rate the food generally speaking.

The kids had fun in the belly of the dinosaur and on the various slides. If you are up for a stroll, the nearby river is the perfect place. Or bring your own food and barbeque it. Can get quite busy towards the late afternoon.

It’s a nice place to take a walk, ride your bike /skateboard, or enjoy playing in the open areas. They also have basketball courts and a playground for children. The whole place is fairly clean and quiet (we went in the early evening ). It is well lit and has several trash bins around to keep the place clean. I came back the next day to take a few pics - and I realized it was even bigger than I thought.

Mini golf in this park is a great way to spend a couple of hours. The ladies that run the golf are lovely and very helpful will definitely return next year.

The best playground in the area that has a lot of things going for it:
+ many different attractions for ages 3-7
+ beautiful park environment
+ sufficient shade from trees, benches to sit on
+ public restrooms
+ soft and sandy surfaces
+ grill stations
+ central location with parking right next to it
Only downsides I can come up with:
- noise from the highway next to it
- no kiosk to buy snacks or drinks from, make sure to bring your own

Great experience. I booked two activities (dolphin watching and parasailing) for two different days during the week, and considering it was August, I'm very happy to have found availability.
The reception staff were excellent and very friendly.
As for the activities themselves, both were fantastic. P.S. If you get dizzy, perhaps due to the rough seas, bring some alcohol with you.

Tips for Visiting Fuengirola
A little planning goes a long way in Fuengirola, especially if you want to avoid crowds and make the most of your budget. These practical tips will help you navigate the town like a local, whether you are visiting for a weekend or staying for a full week.
Walk or use the train when possible. Fuengirola is flat and pedestrian-friendly, so walking is often faster than driving, especially in summer when parking near the beach becomes difficult. The C1 cercanías train connects Fuengirola to Málaga airport and other coastal towns, making it an affordable alternative to taxis.
Time your visit to the bioparc and castle wisely. The Bioparc Fuengirola is best visited early in the morning when animals are most active and temperatures are lower. The Sohail Castle offers better views in the late afternoon, when the sun softens and the climb feels less exhausting.
Eat away from the seafront for better value. Restaurants directly on the promenade charge a premium for their views. Walk two or three blocks inland to find family-run tapas bars and menus of the day that offer better quality at lower prices.
Check local event dates before booking. Fuengirola hosts several major festivals throughout the year, including the Feria Internacional de los Pueblos and the Virgen del Carmen maritime procession in July. These events add atmosphere but also bring larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.
Carry cash for markets and small bars. While most hotels and larger restaurants accept cards, the Tuesday market and some traditional tapas bars still prefer cash. Having small notes and coins will make transactions easier.
Respect the midday break. Many smaller shops and businesses close between roughly 2pm and 5pm, especially outside the summer season. Plan shopping and errands for the morning or early evening to avoid finding doors closed.
Fuengirola rewards travellers who slow down and explore beyond the obvious beachfront. Even a short detour into the old town or a walk along the Paseo Marítimo at sunset can reveal a side of the town that day-trippers often miss. The attractions listed above offer a strong starting point, but the real charm lies in the spaces between them.
Whether you come for the history, the food or simply the Mediterranean sunshine, Fuengirola delivers a well-rounded Costa del Sol experience. With a flexible plan and a willingness to wander, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for this vibrant corner of southern Spain.
