Wandering through San Sebastián Old Town, known locally as Parte Vieja, feels like stepping into a living postcard where Basque culture, history, and gastronomy collide in the most spectacular way. Nestled at the foot of Mount Urgull and facing the breathtaking La Concha Bay, this district is the beating heart of the city.
Unlike the wide, elegant boulevards of the newer parts of town, the Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow, atmospheric streets designed for getting lost in. Every corner reveals a hidden plaza, a historic church, or a bustling pintxos bar brimming with locals and travelers alike.
While San Sebastián is famous worldwide for its Michelin-starred restaurants, the soul of its culinary scene resides in the traditional taverns of this historic quarter. However, to focus solely on the food would be to miss the incredible depth of history and culture that defines this coastal gem.
From the remnants of ancient city walls to the vibrant pulse of its main square, the area offers a diverse range of experiences for every type of traveler. Whether you are a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for the perfect photo opportunity, you will find it here.
Understanding the layout is key to enjoying your visit, as the district is compact but densely packed with significant landmarks. The best way to experience it is on foot, allowing you to stumble upon the hidden details that make this place so unique.
To help you navigate this enchanting neighborhood, we have curated a list of the absolute must-see spots. These are the locations that capture the essence of San Sebastián’s history, beauty, and vibrant local life.
Here are the 12 best attractions in San Sebastián Old Town that you simply cannot miss.

San Sebastian is a lively city. I really liked the historic center, located near La Concha beach.
Narrow streets full of excellent pintxo bars. They remind me of the Spanish Quarters of Naples (prettier, in my opinion).
Alberto Andres Rubio★★★★★
The Old Town, or Casco Viejo, of San Sebastián, is home to some of the city's main tourist attractions, from the historic center and its famous restaurants and pintxo bars to the shopping areas and iconic buildings. Wander through its streets and enjoy its gastronomy and culture.
Located between the mouth of the Urumea River and the slopes of Mount Urgull.
JUANJO GONZALEZ★★★★★
The Old Town of San Sebastián, despite the hustle and bustle, is one of those places that must be visited calmly, without haste; it is more than its many historical sites that can be visited, its incredible beauty or its famous and varied culinary offerings; it is the place where Donostia was born.
Giancarlo Critelli★★★★★
A charming and enchanting place, definitely worth a visit. I even returned to complete the tour and discover all the corners I'd missed.

The hike up to the castle starting from the Old Town is incredibly beautiful, surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful nature. It’s a bit of a climb, but completely worth it once you see the breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the bay from the top. Dating back to the 12th century, this historic fortress has defended the city for centuries. Perfect blend of history and nature!
MarivicB★★★★★
An easy hike up to the top. There are a couple of ways to get there and both offer stunning views of the city of Donostia. The forest is lush with trees and vegetation. You can even smell some wild flowers. There is a small cafe halfway up that offers beer, coffee and some food. It’s well worth a stop for a dei k and to take in the view.
Marcel Mrose★★★★★
An easy hike near the city that rewards you with fantastic views - what's not to like? Budget one hour to see every old battery and viewpoint. The only disappointing thing is that there are so many dogs without leash, like in so many parts of Donostia.
Suxant★★★★☆
A short hike for about 30 mins at the top. The view at the top is stunning. There are a few view points on the trail. There is also an exhibition point also. A must visit place.

A little bit of a hike, but truly worth it.
Nice museum with a little bit of history on the city and a nice terrace at the top of the castle with an amazing view on the city and the bay.
Entrance to the terrace and museum is free, but access to the terrace is regulated (only 20 persone every 20 mins) so go early and take the free pass and then visit the rest of the castle. When we visited access to the terrace was limited to the afternoon.
I would recommend having shoes for the hike. We did it with flip flops as we were at the beach, but not super pleasant (still feasible)

Visited around 17:30 on a Sunday afternoon. The sunlight coming in the stained glass windows was stunning and beautiful. The organ was also being played. What an amazing sound and the acoustics were stunning.

The San Sebastián Cathedral is a stunning Roman Catholic church built between 1888 and 1897. Designed in an elegant Gothic style, its grand façade immediately stands out and gives the city a majestic feel. Dating back to the late 19th century, the cathedral has also been visited several times by members of the Spanish royal family, adding to its historical significance.
As you arrive in the city, you can already spot its impressive silhouette from afar—it’s one of those landmarks that instantly draws your attention and invites you to explore it up close.
G Mac★★★★★
This is a beautiful Gothic revival cathedral. There is a lot of work currently on the street in front of the entrance to the cathedral, but you can walk around the side of this to gain access. The steeple on top of the cathedral was a later edition. Inside the cathedral are beautiful stained glass windows amazing works of art, including sculptures and paintings. Each of the chapels are filled with beautiful icons. There is a beautiful organ. A magnificent cathedral to visit in the San Sebastian area
John Rolfe★★★★★
Lovely cathedral, light a couple of candles for my parents🙏lovely atmosphere to the place
Nelson Morales★★★★★
This was an unplanned trip. The entrance is free, and has service hours posted at the entrance. I was impressed by the Neo-Gothic architecture. Very nicely preserved. I visited an early afternoon, off season. It was lovely to walk around to admire the architecture and images. A perfect place for meditation. I certainly loved my visit to the cathedral.

This is easily one of the best aquariums I've ever visited. The highlight for me was the underwater tunnel experience—being completely surrounded by marine life and watching the fish glide overhead was absolutely exhilarating and truly immersive.
The tropical fish exhibits were outstanding as well. There were so many beautiful and fascinating species, including several I'd never seen before. Every tank was thoughtfully presented and packed with incredible marine life.
Beyond the fish, the aquarium's collection of shells and coral was equally impressive. The variety and detail on display added another layer of appreciation for the diversity and beauty of the underwater world.
A fantastic experience from start to finish and a must-visit for anyone with an interest in marine life!
Sam Smith★★★★★
This is a fantastic experience if you have children or even if you dont. The aquariums are so well done and the glass is so clear it feels like you are in the water with the fish. It also has a great mix of things on each level.. starting off on the top floor with amazingly mate model boats giving great visuals on how fisherman catch fish then moving down a level you come across a nice little arts exhibition before moving along to see the truly amazing aquariums.. a must visit spot if you find yourself in San Sebastian.
Noelia★★★★☆
This was such a fun experience! The first part of the aquarium is a museum about the history of San Sebastián regarding the sea, piratates/privateers and fishermen. It was very interesting to read all of the information given with the historical objects. The only minus was that there were a lot of spelling mistakes in the English translation. After the museum you arrive in the aquarium which had beautiful sea creatures. As a solo traveler I just wanted to look around in peace but there were a lot of children yelling and running around, nevertheless I had a fun time and learnt a lot.
Roxanne Macalintal★★★★★
I genuinely enjoyed this aquarium. A lot of species and very educational. It’s amazing inside and I also liked the museum where they shared the history of San Sebastian’s ships and trade. I recommend buying tickets online so you won’t have to wait in the queue.
Kirsten Weich★★★★★
Interesting how it is set up. Top two floors are museum-ish, loads of interesting history of San Sebastián. Lower two floors are the aquarium, beautifully set up and incredibly clean. We loved the tunnel and spent loads of time there enjoying watching the sharks, fish and eels. Our kids really enjoyed it, the gift shop is fabulous and very affordable. Loved finding goodies that were locally made too! We prioritize finding local made artisan items over mass produced, it’s not often a gift shop carries these so we were happy to see that.

fun and unique way to reach the top of Monte Igueldo! The historic funicular ride is short but charming, and the views from the summit are absolutely worth it. Looking out over the bay, beaches, and city of San Sebastián was one of the highlights of our trip. The ride itself adds to the experience and gives you a glimpse into the area's history. Whether you're visiting for the views, photos, or the nostalgic atmosphere at the top, Funicular Monte Igueldo is a must-do while in San Sebastián. 🚋🌊🏞️📸

This funicular was a great addition to our trip to San Sebastian! The view of La Concha and the rest of the area is beautiful. There is a restaurant at the top that we didn’t go to that was very full (not sure if reservations are possible). Almost all or all of the kid rides were closed mid-afternoon on a Monday, possibly for siesta, so keep that in mind. For €5.50 round trip it was well worth the price just for the view. There are several restrooms at the top. There is a bus stop at the bottom to take you almost anywhere in the city if you time your departure well.
Gail Gee★★★★★
A super event, wonderful views. I recommend the bar near the haunted house attraction rather than queues at the restaurant. Expect queues for the train but they move efficiently. It's not expensive to take the funicular train and it's a short ride.
Charles Rohan★★★★★
Long wait (30 mins) around 11am midweek in August. Short trip in vintage train. Views from top are exceptional. Quaint vintage “theme park” at top will entertain the kids. Does not require a long visit.
Alexander Hornbacher★★★★★
Does exactly what it's supposed to — gets you up the hill in a couple of minutes with a nice view on the way. Short ride, reasonable price, and beats walking up. Just remember the tower at the top costs an extra €3 if you want to go in.

It had been a long time since I last visited an amusement park, and this one was such a pleasant surprise. It's not very big, but it has two absolutely amazing attractions that are worth the visit on their own.
I highly recommend the roller coaster—it's exciting, smooth, and so much fun. My other favorite attraction was the boat ride, which takes you through breathtaking scenery with truly beautiful views. It was both relaxing and magical.
I had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this park to anyone looking for a fun day out!
Ivan Varadinov★★★★☆
Probably the best viewpoint overlooking San Sebastián. The view is absolutely breathtaking, and it's hard to imagine another place that comes close to this level of beauty.
Unfortunately, there are a few things that take away from the experience. This is an amazing location that could easily be a gold mine without relying on tourist traps.
For example, if you arrive by car, the entrance fee to the park is €3 per person, not per vehicle. The funicular ticket going down costs €2, but there is no option to buy a return ticket. When you want to go back up, you have to buy another ticket for €4 per person (you now have the return option), which includes the park entrance again. In other words, you end up paying the entrance fee twice.
Many of the attractions also feel quite old, and unless I missed something, the site is not particularly well adapted for visitors with reduced mobility.
Despite these issues, the incredible views alone make the visit worthwhile.
Yaroslav Lugovskoy★★★★★
Beautiful place, taking a funicular back and forth is a great decision to be honest(it’s about €6). At the top you have a stunning view point. I would recommend taking a little boat that goes around and you get a great view at San Sebastián(it’s about €3). Not crowded at all and did not get into any lines in Saturday’s afternoon. You should not miss out on this place it’s really cheap and definitely worths a shot to visit.
Isuru Dissanayake★★★★★
This is an amazing hill top in San Sebastian with a great view. Located within walking distance to La Concha beach. There's a funicular ride to reach the top of the summit of Monte Igueldo. We took the return funicular ride. Very hard to explain view at the top of La Concha beach and surrounding area. There are lot more activities to do on top. Kid friendly location. There are few nice photo locations on top. Loved the view and experience.
Kari Rosenlöf★★★★★
A fun little amusement park that is definitely worth a visit. It’s designed for the youngest members of the family, but adults can enjoy it too. The roller coaster is amazing, even though it’s small. Easy to park.

Most beautiful palace, I wish I could live here. I didn't think San Sebastian could get any more gorgeous but being here during golden hour proved me wrong. Not only is it gorgeous to see the grounds and trees, but the views of the city and the beach are incredible. With the green of the grass and gold light, and turquoise water, its hard to believe you're not imagining things.

A flat walk next to the beaches as far as you can go to see these fantastic sculptures embedded in various large rocks in the sea. A lovely place to just sit, watch and listen to the sea and relax
Quinn Fu★★★★★
Did you hear the waves roaring? That was at the Comb of the Wind in San Sebastián on March 27 this year. It is a famous and unique place featuring the iron sculptures of Eduardo Chillida. Once you arrive, you can see the iron signs and feel the incredible charm and power of the waves crashing against the rocks. A truly atmospheric spot that you must experience in person!
Hasan Elgun★★★★★
Loved the morning walk along the coast to get here! The Atlantic views are breathtaking, and watching the waves interact with the artwork is mesmerizing. A peaceful and must-visit spot in San Sebastián.
An'e Perez★★★★★
Lovely metal sculpture series (3) with a nice stone platform for viewing and photos.
Go during high tide to watch the waves jump over the wall and feel the wind as it whistles through pipes in the platform and emerges through circular holes, launching skyward.
Dani Baal★★★★☆
“Peine del Viento XV” in San Sebastián is one of those places where art, nature, and the sea blend perfectly together. The massive steel sculptures by Eduardo Chillida facing the crashing Atlantic waves create a dramatic and unforgettable atmosphere. On windy days, the sound of the ocean and the spray through the rocks make the experience even more powerful. It’s a peaceful yet intense spot, ideal for walking, reflecting, and watching the sunset over the Basque coast.

The Basilica of Saint Mary of Coro is a stunning Baroque church tucked away in the charming Old Town of San Sebastián. Completed in 1774, it’s a beautiful spot to step into both history and tranquility.
There’s a small €3 entrance fee for visitors, though it’s free if you’re attending worship. Once inside, you’ll find a peaceful, quiet atmosphere with impressive architecture that makes it well worth a visit.
G Mac★★★★★
This is a beautiful basilica, and even though there is a three euro entry fee it is worth the price for admission. It sits directly opposite the cathedral which you can see several kilometers in the distance. The church itself has a museum of religious artifacts dating from the medieval period up to contemporary pieces. There is a lift that will take you upstairs to a temporary exhibition space. There was a photographic exhibition showing when I was there. The church itself is richly appointed, and the architecture is superb. The carvings and alter pieces are beautiful and rich. The cathedral itself is peaceful and well worth a visit

Fantastic walk up and spectacular views!
There are different ways to walk up and down.
I started walking up from the San Telmo museum, there's a staircase on the corner of the museum. Then took a different route down, arriving behind the Architecture Institute (?)
A memorable experience and as a workout, totally beats the treadmill at the hotel gym!
Catrinel Manolescu★★★★★
Spectacular views, the whole city can be seen from above 😍
Joe Catersales★★★★★
Take a walk away from the old town to the other side of the bay along the beautiful promenade to the Funicular station at the bottom of Monte Urgull. The accent itself is worth the trip but when you reach the top you will be rewarded by the best views of the bay. There is a bar with a panoramic terrace to enjoy the view from. The top of the mountain is also home to a small theme park with a variety of tame rides to enjoy with your family. There is a narrow circular water canal ride that skirts the perimeter of the mountain top, hugging the edge of the cliffs carrying small boats for 4. So if you don't suffer from vertigo then it's a great way of taking in the views. The top of the tower has a 360 degree view of the whole area.

Beautiful park in San Sebastian. The surrounding it's amazing and there you can feel the vibe of the city. In spring and summer there are a lot of flowers, and the tulips are particularly beautiful. It's easy to get there. There is a carrusel for kids that it brought you to your childhood. Close to there, there is a touristic train and also the ferry to the island in front of the beach.

Walking from San Sebastián City Hall into Alderdi Eder Park feels like stepping into a garden by the sea. Bright, vivid flowers line the pathways, bringing life and color to the already beautiful coastal setting. It’s a different kind of charm—peaceful, elegant, and full of small details worth capturing.

Essential Tips for Visiting San Sebastián Old Town
Navigating the historic center requires a bit of local knowledge to ensure you have the most authentic and enjoyable experience possible. The area operates on a rhythm distinct from the rest of the city, driven by meal times, tides, and the Basque love for socializing. By understanding a few key nuances, you can avoid common tourist pitfalls and immerse yourself in the local way of life. Here are the most important tips to keep in mind for your visit.
1. Embrace the Pintxos Crawl (Txikiteo)
Do not sit down for a heavy meal at the first bar you see. The local tradition is to hop from bar to bar, ordering one or two pintxos and a drink at each location. Look for the hot items written on chalkboards behind the counter, as these are made to order and are usually far superior to the cold items sitting on the bar.
2. Time Your Visit with the Tides
If you plan to visit the beach areas near the Old Town or walk to the "Peine del Viento" nearby, check the tide charts. During low tide, the beach expands dramatically, and you can access areas that are completely submerged during high tide.
3. Learn Basic Basque Greetings
While Spanish is widely spoken, San Sebastián is in the Basque Country. Locals deeply appreciate visitors who make an effort with the Basque language. Simple words like "Kaixo" (Hello), "Eskerrik asko" (Thank you), and "Agur" (Goodbye) will earn you warm smiles and better service.
4. Be Prepared for Late Dining
The Old Town is a ghost town for dinner before 8:00 PM. If you want to eat with locals, arrive at the pintxos bars around 8:30 PM to 9:00 PM. If you are hungry earlier, look for places that serve "raciones" or sit-down menus, as many tourist-oriented spots open earlier.
5. Wear Comfortable, Grip-Friendly Shoes
The streets of Parte Vieja are notoriously uneven, made of ancient cobblestones that can become incredibly slippery when wet. Leave the high heels and leather-soled dress shoes at the hotel and opt for sneakers or shoes with good rubber traction.
The magic of San Sebastián’s Old Town lies not just in its monuments, but in the atmosphere that lingers between its ancient walls. It is a place where the past and present coexist seamlessly, where the smell of the sea mixes with the aroma of sizzling garlic and olive oil.
Whether you spend your days climbing Mount Urgull for panoramic views or simply sitting in Constitution Square watching the world go by, the experience stays with you. Take your time, wander without a strict agenda, and let the unique rhythm of Parte Vieja guide your journey.
