Perched on the sun-drenched northern coast of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz offers a culinary landscape as rich and varied as its volcanic history. Unlike the purpose-built resorts of the south, this city has a genuine, lived-in soul that translates directly to its dining scene. From historic fishermenβs quarters to elegant colonial courtyards, every meal here is an opportunity to connect with authentic Canarian culture. While the island is famous for its papas arrugadas and mojo sauce, the restaurant scene in Puerto de la Cruz extends far beyond the expected tourist fare.
The city has long been a crossroads for travelers, and this international influence is reflected in the diversity of its kitchens. You can just as easily find a meticulously prepared Italian risotto as you can a traditional stew simmered for hours over a low flame. Yet, the true magic lies in the establishments that honor Tenerifeβs agricultural heritage, utilizing fresh seafood from the Atlantic and produce grown on the fertile slopes of Mount Teide. Navigating this dense culinary map can be overwhelming, but knowing where to look unlocks a world of flavor.
For the discerning traveler, dining here is not just about sustenance; it is about understanding the geography. The proximity to the working harbor means the catch of the day is often still glistening when it hits the grill. Furthermore, the microclimates of the Orotava Valley produce bananas, avocados, and unique wines that feature heavily on the best menus. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner with ocean views or a bustling local tapas bar, this city delivers with an unpretentious confidence.
This guide focuses on establishments that prioritize quality ingredients and offer a memorable experience, moving beyond the generic menus often found near the main promenade. We have considered atmosphere, consistency, and the ability to provide a true taste of the region. From hidden gems tucked away on cobblestone streets to iconic institutions that have served generations, these selections represent the best of what the city has to offer. It is a curated list designed to save you time and ensure you do not miss the culinary highlights of this beloved northern capital.
Understanding the local dining schedule is crucial to enjoying your experience. Spaniards generally eat lunch late, often between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM, and dinner rarely begins before 8:30 PM. While Puerto de la Cruz is accustomed to tourists, many of the best local spots strictly adhere to these hours. Arriving early might mean dining in an empty room, while arriving too late without a reservation can leave you waiting in line. Embracing the local rhythm is the first step to eating like a local.
Finally, the best dining experiences often come from wandering away from the immediate waterfront. While the views of the Atlantic are spectacular, the highest concentration of culinary talent is often found in the atmospheric streets of the old town, La Ranilla. Here, traditional architecture houses innovative chefs and family-run ventures that have perfected their recipes over decades. With this in mind, prepare to explore the flavors that make Puerto de la Cruz a true gastronomic destination in the Canary Islands.

It was the best experience we had in Tenerife ! (Yeah better than the Mount Teide). If you are not a food lover, this comment is not for you. We came here twice in a row ! Trust me, the food is so good : The paella is amazing, the octopus, inbeliveable and the tapas (croquettas, ciabatta bread con aoli/tomato, Andalusian Style calamari) unforgettable.
Please, just go for it and come back to thank me later.
(P.S : The dessert are bigger than Mount Teide, Β‘Joder!)

We made a reservation here, and the space was lovely. The stained glass was really pretty at the end of the day.
We were pleasantly surprised that the staff spoke excellent English, but quickly realized that there were a lot of English speakers dining here. (Admittedly it felt a bit strange to hear other American accents.) The food reflected the heavy tourist traffic, and the portions were huge!
The focaccia they served was delicious!
The day we were there, staff wasnβt particularly friendly. There must have been a shift change and whoever took over our table seemed a bit put out. But the person who greeted us, and the one who took our order initially and answered our questions were both nice.
That said, I could have skipped this spot. There are lots of great food options around the town.

We visited La TaperΓa on our very first day after landing, and honestly, it felt like a stroke of luck. Almost everywhere else was closed, but they were open and welcoming. Since we had already eaten plenty of meat back in the UK, and knowing the island is known for its fresh seafood, we decided to try the octopus. That turned out to be one of the best decisions we made.
The food impressed us so much that we went back the very next day. This time, we ordered the paella and a seafood platter for two, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was only a three-minute walk from our hotel, but after such a hearty meal, even that short distance felt like a marathonβwe were genuinely tempted to take a taxi.
Of course, I couldnβt resist dessert. My husband opted out, but he encouraged me to go for it, and I didnβt want to be rude when the staff recommended the cheesecakeβwhich, interestingly, wasnβt quite a traditional cheesecake. By that point, I was so full I could barely think straight, but it was absolutely worth it and delicious to the very last bite.
The staff were fantasticβpolite, warm, and genuinely welcomingβwhich made the whole experience even better. La TaperΓa is definitely a must-visit when in Tenerife. Weβre already planning to work our way through the entire menu before we leave. Thankfully, weβre walking everywhere, so we might just balance it outβbut with food this fresh and healthy, thereβs really nothing to worry about anyway.

Really enjoyed all the tapas dishes here. The portions are perfect for two people to share, but would also work well for four.
We ordered ciabatta with tomatoes, PadrΓ³n peppers, calamari, Iberian chistorra in apple cider, Iberian ribs with sweet potato purΓ©e, and the Basque cheesecake. We enjoyed every dish.
The sauce for the PadrΓ³n peppers had a special smoky flavor that we really liked. The Iberian ribs were a bit salty for my taste, but paired very well with the creamy purΓ©e. The caramel served with the cheesecake was a small highlight β absolutely delicious.

We stopped by this restaurant after siesta to try some traditional paella. The place was pretty empty as for the time and they had football on TV, which helped pass the time while we waited. Our order was taken immediately, and we were warned that it would take a little while because the dish is made fresh to order. About half an hour later, our food arrived.
Everything was really delicious. My husband was very satisfied with his steak and left feeling completely full, while the paella portion was a bit small for me, even though it tasted excellent. The freshly squeezed orange juice was also a great touchπ₯°
The only thing that felt a little uncomfortable was that one of the staff members (or perhaps the owner) stood right next to us while we were eating. It felt a bit strange and somewhat intrusiveπ«£
Other than that, everything was great. I definitely recommend this place, especially for the steak!

If youβre looking for great service, Restaurante Divino is the place to be!
We arrived drenched from riding on a rainy day and really appreciated the kind staff who turned the heater on for us on the patio. They also chuckled or smiled at us when we basically stuck to it like koalas (we were shivering quite badly from the cold) and were sincerely grateful for their friendliness that made us feel much more comfortable in their restaurant.
Food-wise, we enjoyed everything we ordered from the garlic bread, chicken soup and mixed paella. Nothing stood out but everything was well-seasoned and cooked well.
I would return again to try other dishes and also for Restaurante Divinoβs great service! (:

Itβs simple and has only a small number of tables, but the attention from the owner β who is also the chef β is truly special. He takes the time to care for every guest and makes sure everyone feels looked after.
Everything is cooked fresh. As a little complimentary starter, while I was waiting for the main dish, they brought a toast with pΓ’tΓ© β a wonderful beginning. I ordered Gorgonzola ravioli with caramelized onion, and let me tell you: these are the best ravioli on the island. They didnβt drown them in sauce, just lightly seasoned them. And they didnβt oversalt them either β perfect.
And for dessert, try the tiramisΓΉ β itβs genuinely delicious, especially with the fresh berries.

Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the service at this restaurant. We are not sure whether this was due to it being January 1st and a possible lack of staff; however, after reading recent reviews, it is clear that we are not the only ones who feel this way.
We waited over an hour just to order drinks, and then an additional 30 minutes for the food to be served. We also noticed a couple at the table next to us who were waiting a very long time for their food as well. In the end, they paid only for their drinks and left without eating.
Although the dishes looked very appealing, the taste was quite average. My seafood pasta was completely bland and lacked flavour. The only positive experience was the seafood soup, which was genuinely good.
Overall, our visit was disappointing and we would not recommend this restaurant.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this place, this was not a pleasant experience. We waited for the food over an hour, and by the time we got it, two other tables that arrived after us, already ate theirs. The food was below average, especially for this price point. We had 6 different dishes and 5 out of them were not even seasoned. Honestly everything tasted extremely bland. The fried prawns were uncleaned and fried with the shells on, which is just stupid, since you need to peel the fried batter off to clean the prawns. The squids were stuck together in the batter and without flavor. Horrible.

We visited Muxacho for dinner on Saturday evening. We received a warm welcome from Jonathan, front of house, who was very attentive ensuring we were happy with the table weβd been allocated. We sat on the terrace, as the evening progressed all tables were booked. A pretty terrace, with white tables and chairs, low hanging raffia shades covering the lights. Small pots of olive sprigs on the table are used in a quirky way, to hold a wooden board of olives, homemade crisps and Canarian cheese, to enjoy while you read the menu. The artisan bread rolls had a delicious aniseed flavour. The menu is extensive offering Canarian dishes, meat, fish, pasta and vegan choices. We chose the chefs recommendation, of tomato Tatar for a starter. It was a large portion of heritage tomatoes with fig and basil sauce. Delicious! For our mains,we had ribs with bbq sauce and beef cheeks stacked with pear and goats cheese. My only negative was the chips looked pale and undercooked. The ribs were tender and sweet. We drank cava and red wine which was good. We ordered the strawberry pavlova, which was creatively presented. All the staff were professional and friendly.
We enjoyed our evening at Muxacho and were pleased weβd made a reservation for dinner.

This was an amazing lunch with a beautiful view of a typical Canarian courtyard.
The quality of the food was absolutely top-notch.
For starters, we had mussels in their own broth β they were incredibly juicy and perfectly clean (no sand or grit at all!), something you rarely find in restaurants these days. The special broth they were cooked in gave them an exceptional flavor and aroma.
Then came the onion and seafood soups β and wow, what an experience! It was a true gastronomic delight.
For the main course, we had fish, which was the perfect finale to our meal β simply phenomenal.
When it comes to the food here, there are no words, just pure emotion.
A special thanks to our waitress, Angie, for her professional service and wonderful recommendations. She truly added an extra charm to the whole lunch experience.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this place and absolutely give it a top rating!

A true culinary masterpiece
Zicatela was easily one of the highlights of our trip to Tenerife. The food is nothing short of a masterpiece β every dish we tried was beautifully presented, incredibly flavorful, and clearly made with great attention to detail. From the perfectly grilled meat and incredible tacos to the prawns, bao-style buns and delicious sides, everything was outstanding.
But itβs not just the food. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful. The design, the stone walls, the tableware and all the little details create such a unique and stylish atmosphere. It feels special without being pretentious.
And honestly, our experience says it all: we went back four times for dinner during our 10-day stay in Tenerife. There are so many restaurants to discover on the island, yet we kept finding ourselves coming back to Zicatela.

This was our second time here as scots lassies from Glasgow. Borca who seated us made us feel extra welcome as he is accustomed to visits to Scotland. That aside, glad we came back to the south part of Tenerife; with this place in mind. We loved the food, cocktails & vibes when we first visited in December 2023. So we were not disappointed with our second time around. The Gucamole (freshly prepared in front of us) was a in-house favourite. We had again, the sirlion skewers, scallop, fish taco & lotus (biscoff) pistachio cheesecake. We washed these down with a lovely bottle of rioja & the half pitcher of Margarita (Mango). Coming in just shy of β¬100. Service staff so friendly & helpful. We were staying just shy of 30 mins walk away! So we got a taxi there & the waitress sorted out a taxi for us. Lovely night. Nice location for a walk. Friendly staff who speaks limited english but still able to have a nice conversation and laugh. Small menu with good choices. The lamb was extremely good and very recommended. We also tried croquettes (tuna and spinach) and squids which were also delicious. Prices in the average.

Nice restaurant ππ» food was tasty, but 2-person portions were more like 1-person dish. As you can see on the pictures, lamb and pork with French fries are not that big to share for a couple. On the other hand, we were very satisfied with the taste. Also, I recommend tuna salad, as the ingredients were fresh and they used ripe vegetables π₯
I recommend this restaurant ππ»
You canβt smoke on the terrace.
Also, I enjoyed the service. The waiters were very attentive and recommended us the dishes β¨

Small menu. Thatβs a sign a place is good! Only items they are 10/10 at. One of the best meals had in Tenerife. Lamb is special. So is the cheese. Will come back to try two more items. Very friendly owners who were accommodating with allergies. HIGH RECOMMEND!

Itβs ok. The plating is quite fancy, but the food is okay - from a food persons standpoint. Looks better than it tastes.
I would probably do the grilled chicken, and not the lamb, since the lamb had a paprikash/chorizo flavor to it. A bit boring.
The Symphony of Shrimp is taken out of a cookbook from the 80βs. Funish, but quite meh if youβve tried a lot of fried foods.
Patatas bravas is dunked in mojo picante. Pre-boiled then lightly turned in the sauce. Not worth the price. I would order the small if we were 4 or more.
Nice service, and placed with a good backdrop of some old quaint houses. Sit outside, no aircon inside.

A beautiful restaurant with incredible food and excellent service. We were pleased from the beginning to the end. Each dish is simple and complex at the same time, which I like a lot. It is mostly local recipes that are transformed/revisited in an incredible way. Tastes are rich in savors and portions are not too small not too big so just perfect. I also had one of the best salad ever. And it is really good value for the price. I can only recommend and I wish I had more time in Tenerife to go back. The waiter who is really kind also provided us with good and honest recommendations as initially we were going to order too much food as he told us. Honesty which is rare to find in other places nowadays. So 5 stars, I would give more if I could.

The best food we had during our stay in Tenerife! So good we visited twice. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious - the sea bass and beetroot salad were a real highlight. Excellent quality produce and so beautifully presented. Very affordable prices too. Highly recommend.

Very good food with good staf! Ingredients are fresh and the selected wines are local and have great taste. In my personal opinion they should put some less white and bright lights on, because the lights now are making the whole experience a bit sterile. But all and all really good restaurant! We already made a new reservation for next week.

After two months travelling in Spain, this was our finest meal yet. The food was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The setting, in a leafy, plant filled alley, was postcard perfect, and all served up by the very friendly and funny Tina. Don't miss this great spot if you are visiting Puerto de la Cruz, but make sure you make a reservation - the one dinner seating is always full. Cash only.

Visited with my boyfriend on a weekday. The tapas (gazpacho and squid) were okay, but nothing special. The mains, on the other hand, were fantastic! The Argentinian steak was huge β definitely shareable if youβre not super hungry β and the cod was perfectly cooked with really tasty sauces.
The service was amazing. The place is run by just the chef and a waitress, and she was super friendly, funny, and attentive. 10/10 for service. π―
The atmosphere is lovely too, tucked away in a green little streetπΏ. While waiting for the food you can even hear the chef singing along to great songs on the radio. Would definitely recommend! βΊοΈ

Hard to find but worth looking for.
I would advise you to book in advance especially if you'd like outside seating. I turned up as the restaurant opened but found only 2 small tables unbooked so large groups are advised to book in advance.

We visited on New Yearβs and left feeling disappointed and, frankly, a bit cheated.
The food itself was tasty, but the portions were seriously unbalanced. The Bulgarian main course was especially underwhelming, with very little meat compared to the vegetables, and did not justify the price at all. Paying over 150β¬ for a meal that felt closer to a 40β¬ experience is hard to accept, even considering it was New Yearβs.
What was even more surprising was that the Spanish option on the menu was noticeably better than the Bulgarian main course. That raises a serious question about consistency and concept.
Service was also an issue. We waited almost an hour before receiving any food. I received my drink, but my wife didnβt get hers until I asked again more than 40 minutes later. That should not happen at this price level.
To make matters worse, the dessert my wife wanted was no longer available, despite us asking earlier if it could be ordered later and being told that it wouldnβt be a problem.
Overall, the evening did not match the expectations set by the prices. New Yearβs or not, value and basic service still matter.

I had a very good tajine with beef, it was a little bit fatty but I guess thatβs normal. We also had a tajin with lamb meat which was way too fatty in my opinion. What I really can recommend was the orange blossom lemonade! Keep in mind that the tajine does not include any side dishes so itβs a bit too expansive.

We had dinner here today and it was a really nice experience. I had a steak with salad, and it was very tasty and cooked really well. The wine pairing was also excellent and matched the food perfectly.
One small note: the waitress can seem very direct and quick at first, but donβt let that scare you. She is actually very kind, professional, and everything worked smoothly from start to finish.
Overall: great food, great wine, and good service. I would definitely come back.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!
Can't praise Casa mediterranea enough!
We've eaten here the last two Saturdays in a row.. It's a real food experience -
Food and wine are explained in passionate detail by the the lady who runs the front of house (sorry should have asked your name! πΏ).... with slight bias towards Argentinian dishes obviously!
Food is perfectly cooked and presented.. and good value too.. 16β¬ for the fantastic entrecote 18β¬ for a nice bottle of Argentinian malbec.
Really enjoy the ambiance and love for the food that the couple provide .. I'm sure we'll be eating here again in the near future

Where do I even start? The location and atmosphere of this restaurant are incredibly cozy and comforting. The service was absolutely amazing. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife, and she has the most enthusiastic, kind, and welcoming energy throughout the entire experience. I would honestly come back just for her warm personality.
And I think her husband must be a wizard, because the food from the starters to the desserts was absolutely incredible. I have never had meat this good before. Every dish was full of flavor and made with so much care.
I would recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting Puerto de la Cruz or the surrounding area. It is truly an unforgettable experience!

Tips for Dining Out in Puerto de la Cruz
To make the most of your culinary journey in this vibrant city, a little local knowledge goes a long way. While the restaurants listed above offer exceptional food, understanding the nuances of dining culture here will elevate your experience from good to unforgettable. From securing the best tables to ordering like a resident, these practical tips will help you navigate the scene with confidence and avoid common tourist pitfalls.
Book Ahead for Popular Spots
Many of the best restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz are small, family-run establishments with limited seating. If you have your heart set on a specific venue, especially on weekends or during peak holiday seasons, calling ahead or booking online is essential. This is particularly true if you want a table on a terrace or by a window with a view of the ocean.
Embrace the Local Wine
While sangria is a popular choice for visitors, Tenerife produces some outstanding volcanic wines that pair beautifully with local food. Look for wines from the Tacoronte-Acentejo denomination, which is located very close to Puerto de la Cruz. Asking your server for a local red or white is a sign of a savvy traveler and often offers better value than imported mainland wines.
Understand the "Guachinche" Culture
If you are willing to travel slightly outside the city center, keep an eye out for "guachinches." These are rustic, often temporary eateries that started as places for local winemakers to sell their excess wine alongside homemade food. While not strictly within the city limits, finding one nearby offers the most authentic and affordable dining experience possible on the island.
Check for "MenΓΊ del DΓa"
For the best value, look for restaurants offering a "MenΓΊ del DΓa" (Menu of the Day) during lunch hours. This fixed-price menu usually includes a starter, a main course, a dessert, and a drink. It is an excellent way to sample traditional Canarian cooking at a fraction of the cost of ordering Γ la carte in the evening.
Be Patient with Service
Dining in Spain is a leisurely affair, and the pace of service is generally slower than in Northern Europe or North America. Waiters do not rush tables, and the bill will not arrive until you explicitly ask for it ("La cuenta, por favor"). Relax, enjoy the atmosphere, and view the meal as an event rather than a transaction.
Puerto de la Cruz is more than just a beach destination; it is a city that feeds the soul as much as the body. The blend of Atlantic breezes, volcanic soil, and generations of culinary tradition creates a dining scene that is difficult to match elsewhere in the archipelago. Whether you are indulging in fresh seafood at a harbor-side terrace or savoring a slow-cooked stew in a historic courtyard, the flavors here linger long after the plates are cleared.
Ultimately, the best way to experience this city is to wander with an open mind and an empty stomach. Use this guide as a starting point, but do not be afraid to follow the aromas down a side street or strike up a conversation with a local shopkeeper about where they eat on their day off. In Puerto de la Cruz, the next great meal is always just around the corner, waiting to be discovered.
