10 Best Cafes in Mahón

Mahón, the understated capital of Menorca, moves at a different rhythm than the rest of the Balearic Islands. While other destinations chase the late-night party crowd, this natural deep-water port has cultivated a refined, unhurried atmosphere that feels distinctly Mediterranean. It is a city where the clinking of porcelain cups, the hiss of a steam wand, and quiet conversation form the soundtrack of the morning.

The local coffee culture here is not a fleeting trend; it is woven into the fabric of daily social life. From the historic plazas of the old town to the sun-drenched terraces overlooking the port, coffee is taken seriously. Whether you are looking for a quick, potent shot of caffeine before exploring the fortress or a leisurely afternoon spent people-watching, Mahón delivers.

However, navigating the sheer variety of options can be overwhelming for a visitor. You might find yourself wandering the narrow, winding streets, unsure of which unassuming doorway leads to the perfect crema and which leads to a mediocre tourist trap. The difference between a good cup and a great cup often lies in the details: the roast profile, the quality of the milk, and the atmosphere of the room itself.

This guide is designed to cut through the uncertainty and lead you directly to the best experiences the city has to offer. We have analyzed the local scene, considered the quality of the beans, the skill of the baristas, and the charm of the locations to curate a definitive list. It is a balance of historic institutions that have served the city for generations and modern specialty spots that are pushing the culture forward.

You will find that the geography of Mahón plays a key role in its coffee scene. The areas near the Mercat des Claustre, the bustling shopping streets, and the lower port district each offer distinct vibes. Choosing where to sit often depends on whether you want the energy of the city center or the sea breeze drifting up from the water.

To ensure you get the most out of your gastronomic tour, we have categorized these spots based on what they do best. Some are perfect for a traditional Menorcan breakfast, while others excel at specialty single-origin brews. Below, you will find a curated selection of the ten best cafes in Mahón that you simply should not miss.

Such a nice place. Amazing food, you have to try the toast and tomatoes, beautiful Italian simplicity. The music is perfect too, good soul music. Really nice staff, so helpful. Excellent coffee. I didn't try the pastries but they look delicious. You have the choice between sitting outside in the shade or inside with air conditioning.

We arrived just after closing, but Alfonso — the kindest soul — still welcomed us in. Not only did he serve up the most delicious coffee, heavenly carrot cake, and a pistachio croissant we’re still dreaming about, but he also shared amazing local tips (including the perfect sunset spot). As if that wasn’t enough, just as we were leaving, he surprised us with extra treats to enjoy while watching the sunset he recommended. It was pure magic. Alfonso, thank you for your warmth, generosity, and incredible coffee — you turned a quiet moment into a memory we’ll never forget. This little spot deserves all the stars in the sky

Lovely environment. A nice buzz. Great coffee. I hear good things about the food and it looked great. I’ll be back with friends for brunch soon

3 of us had coffee, wine and a snack. The cafe is really nice, it's very clean and bright. The couple are both friendly and welcoming. Happy one year anniversary for yesterday.

Lunch. Aubergines with Parmisan cheese followed by a vegetarian and a classic lasagna. Beautiful authentic Italian food. Finished off with a delicious limoncello.

Great place for a bite to eat, our waiter was friendly and attentive and the food (served from 1pm) was delicious. Lovely vibes inside but some quite steep steps up to the loo! Would recommend for lunch in the area

Outstanding food, drinks, and history!I had an incredible time at Baixamar Mahon. This bar perfectly blends Menorca's rich nautical heritage with a great food experience. The atmosphere by the water is beautiful and relaxing.
Santi Talo★★★★☆
Tapas were average but the price is adequate, 13 euros per person for 3 tapas. It is a good bar to have a great beer like Graham Pearce and just have a bite. Too many sandwich 🥪... I took crab 🦀 salad that has too much Turmeric and the hummus that was average and finally some croquets that were quite good. Price wise is good place, dinner wise only fair
Jl Lenoir★★★★★
Amazingly fresh goat salade and really big anchovy/tuna toast. Very dedicated to the quality of the food provided! Nice people working there! Like the t-shirt of the owner said : they are from Menorca, they are slow, but you are the stressed one!!! Thanks you!

Sadly, this really didn't live up to the previous reviews. We met for a drink, intending to eat here, but the reception we got from the waitress was so rude, it was quite an unpleasant experience. She slammed our drinks down, didn't bring nuts although every other table had them. Never returned to our table to check if we wanted more. We felt as though we were an inconvenience rather than valued customers. Not their fault but it's opposite a cruise ship mooring where the MSC Opera was moored, so no view of the harbour. We finished our drinks and went elsewhere, and this place lost out on €100 of business because of that attitude. 2 stars as it has potential but really that service was appalling.

Found this spot discovering the center of the Mahón. Endless choice of traditional local pastries both savoury and sweet! Loved the pastel con cabello de ángel and stuffed rolls with meat. Very friendly staff and cosy atmosphere, will surely come back!

My family of five had one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever seen at a café. We were left standing at the door in a small queue with zero acknowledgement from staff. No greeting, no direction — nothing. We walked inside to see what was available and tried to get someone’s attention, but we were completely ignored. It was busy, so we gave them the benefit of the doubt and left to find somewhere else. Unfortunately, we ended up back there later, and that’s when things got even worse. A staff member came out and greeted us warmly — until she realised we weren’t Spanish. The moment she switched languages, her entire attitude changed. She walked past us, ignored us, and acted like we didn’t exist. We eventually walked back inside and found a free table. As we approached it, the same staff member stared at us like we were doing something wrong. We politely asked for an extra chair. She rolled her eyes, dismissed the request as if it was ridiculous, and acted like we were causing a problem — despite the fact that a family of five was sitting at the table right next to us. She reluctantly said “okay” and walked off… then never came back. All of this happened while one customer sat alone at a large round table for five, surrounded by cakes, a newspaper, and a phone, leaving and returning as they pleased — while families like ours were left standing, ignored, and treated with open hostility. This café clearly doesn’t care about tourists, families, or basic respect. The staff made us feel unwelcome, invisible, and like we were a burden for simply trying to sit down. Easily one of the worst service experiences we’ve had anywhere, and we won’t be returning.
Amber★☆☆☆☆
I was really disappointed with my experience at this cafe. The staff member who served me was rude, dismissive and unhelpful from the start. When I asked a simple question, she rolled her eyes and made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. What stood out most was that her attitude seemed to change noticeably once she realised I wasn’t a local/Spanish, which left me feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. Whether intentional or not, that’s how the interaction came across to me. Good customer service should make everyone feel welcome, regardless of where they’re from. Unfortunately, this experience has put me off returning, and I hope management takes customer service more seriously.

Fabulous Patisserie! The coffee was the best espresso I've had in ages and the range of cakes is amazing. All fresh and delicious 😋

Cute café that invited you to stay and try the delicious pastries. Coffee chocolate cake but also carrot cake are my absolute favorites. Bakery also has savoury options. Friendly staff and it's also possible to sit outside. It can get busy here since it's one of the best cafes in the center of Mahón, might have to wait for a seat.

An absolute gem of a place to have brunch or lunch. The courtyard is absolutely beautiful and is so well maintained. The Iberico ham and Pa amb Tomaquet were lovely and the white wine which was delightful went down very nicely. I will be back.

Really lovely restaurant. Ambience, location and environment is lovely and easily accessible location. Lovely staff, all pleasant and very warm. They were so lovely with our son who is 3, we did bring some added books and toys to keep him busy. Food is really excellent quality and flavourful, the fruit is all fresh everything was at the perfect temperature and quantity. Would highly recommend to try away from the busy main areas

Now open for Spring and Summer!!! Such a hidden gem- and even more so now they’ve renovated the entirety of the interior. I stumbled across Cafe Menorca on my morning runs 4 years ago, and what started as a ritual of a morning coffee has now become my go to spot whenever I visit Menorca. The toasties are always a hit, but having tried most of the menu I can say whatever you choose, you will leave feeling satisfied. Marco and the team are phenomenal hosts from the first moment until the last. It doesn’t feel like a great customer experience, rather you leave feeling as though you’ve been looked after like family. Further, the food and coffee are all very reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients, and I have to say made from the heart.
David Crouchen★★★★☆
We visited whilst on a one day visit from a cruise ship. We sat in the few tables on the street but waited for service so decided to go into the cafe. Very friendly and lovely cappuccino.
Antony Haywood★★★☆☆
This was my 1st visit here & we sat outside at one of the 8 available tables, initially I just only ordered a couple glasses of Cava Sangria and received very pleasant table service. Also viewing the extensive menu options it was our intention to return back later for some lunch.A change of mind soon came about after seeing other customers having their food served. An order choice of Bruschetta (tomato, garlic & basil )along Nachos with cheese & chilli con carne both to share was placed before our drinks had arrived. I found the glasses of Cava Sangria (€5 each)which had ice & fruit (lemon, orange& apple bits ) to be very disappointing in taste, very weak infact more like a watered down non alcohol soft drink than a traditional Cava Sangria delight.Food wise the 2 slices of Bruschetta were over loaded with a mountain of freshly chopped tomatoes which made the bread soggy, another disappointing order but we found the Nachos to be very nice .The inside bar area also does have about 4 or 5 tables .I also found out when paying the bill that a 1euro additional charge had automatically been added for the terrace service ! It's the 1st time after many visits to Menorca I've come across this happening when dinning out.The single toilet facility inside was clean but had run out or wasn't stocked with hand paper towels during our visit .The staff on duty were very pleasant & spoke very good English but I wouldn't return back again after this lunch time experience .

A cute café with a great ambiance. It has beautiful indoor and outdoor seating, soft lighting, and a warm, inviting feel with candle scents and rich wooden finishes. The coffee was good, not great. Don’t expect latte art, or specialty blends, but you get a perfectly serviceable espresso for the price. There aren’t many pastry options, but the ones they do have are freshly baked and tasty. The staff were also very nice.

We looked high and low in Menorca for a decent coffee and finally we found it look no further. A lot of European places use UHF longline milk and I personally find it has a terrible Aftertaste but this little gem uses fresh milk and gosh can you tell. Their coffee beans taste delicious and all in all it was sensational. Just near the centre of town please try it you won’t be unhappy it’s great. Service too was brilliant

We quite often just wander about when we visit a new location. This wandering takes us to many different areas. We, as usual, chanced upon OhLaLa. It was along to the right of the Port, we went down many flights of stairs to get to sea level from the main public area. The welcome at OhLaLa was very warm. We are finding this welcome is the norm on Menorca. As usual, we were hot and weary. The shade offered by the outside seated eating area was most welcome. Our attentive host soon had our drinks order, swiftly followed by our food order. I had a Chicken salad. The chunks of Chicken were very tasty indeed. Salad to my way of thinking, is just salad. Nothing to get excited about. It was tasty and fresh all the same. The cafe was just starting to get busy, so we'd timed it right. The cost was cheaper than what we have become used to. The toilets were immaculate too. It was an enjoyable lunch watching the coming and goings of the marina. Thank you OhLaLa.
Andy★★★★★
We love ooh la la. We've visited Menorca several times over the last few years and it is always consistent. On of our favourite spots for breakfast, light lunch or coffee. 😁 My wife and kids love the chocolate covered croissant which is essentially a croissant completely covered in chocolate sauce. I'm also told that the ensemiladas are very good too. I tend to go for the bacon and cheese croissant which is delicious. 🥐🥖 It's a great spot right on the Mahon harbour and you can sit in the gazebo at the front. There's a fantastic views of the bay and of the Yachts as the marina runs along the front too. You can also sit inside if you can't get a spot outside (can be tricky for bigger groups). It's air conditioned so offers some welcome relief from the heat. Everything is reasonably priced. My kids, my wife and I (5 people in total) all had a croissant and a drink and it came to under €30 including tip. It's table service so they will take your order and you pay at the counter when you are done. I think they do takeaway and there is a toilet. The road along the harbour is now one way and there is limited parking along the road itself. You might be lucky although get ready to practise your paralleled parking? There is a carpark above the strip of shops and a lift to bring you down to harbour level.
Mitchell Wright★★★★☆
On the harbour front, good view, nice spot for a cooling drink. Initial table service fine but no follow up service, so we ended up finding where to pay and left. Would have liked a waiter to come to the table to ask if we wanted more drinks. Did not partake of food.

Location-wise is great. The design and details in the cafe are great. The food was delicious and interesting. Good for those who are looking for new flavours on the island. The pastries were outstanding and even though the prices were a bit higher than they should I think it was good and we could come back.

Excellent friendly service and even better food. They are known for their pastries and croissants and fresh delectable breakfast sandwiches, but they also make a fantastic smash burger (great bun) and their dinner time Milanesa entree is yummy and straight out of Buenos Aires. Don’t miss this place if you’re in Mahón.

Tips for Enjoying the Cafe Culture in Mahón

To truly appreciate the coffee scene in Mahón, it helps to understand the local customs and timing. Menorcans have a specific rhythm to their day, and adapting to it will make your experience far more pleasant and authentic. Here are a few practical insights to help you navigate the terraces and counters like a local.

Understand the local ordering etiquette. In many traditional cafes, you will pay less if you stand at the bar than if you sit at a table. If you are just looking for a quick espresso to fuel your walk, do as the locals do and drink it standing up. If you choose a terrace, remember that service is intentionally relaxed; you will need to catch the waiter’s eye to ask for the bill.

Time your visit around the local schedule. The cafes are usually at their most vibrant between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, after the school runs and before lunch. If you want a quieter experience, visit after 4:00 PM, but be aware that many kitchens close between lunch and dinner. Coffee is generally an after-lunch ritual, not a mid-afternoon snack.

Know your coffee vocabulary. While "café con leche" is standard, you might want to try a "cortado," which is espresso cut with a small amount of milk. If you prefer cold drinks during the hot summer months, ask for "café con hielo," which is served with a glass of ice. For a truly local twist, look for a "carajillo," which often includes a touch of local brandy or liqueur.

Pair your drink with a local pastry. A coffee alone is rarely the full experience in Menorca. You should look for "ensaimadas," which are coiled pastries dusted with powdered sugar, or "pastissets," which are small, crumbly cakes often made with lard and olive oil. These traditional baked goods are the perfect complement to a bitter espresso or a creamy cappuccino.

Respect the siesta hours. While tourist areas often stay open, many beloved local cafes in the residential areas will close their doors from roughly 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Plan your coffee stops accordingly so you are not left staring at a locked door. The evening is usually reserved for a different kind of drink, though an after-dinner coffee is always welcome.

Ask for tap water. Menorca is a Mediterranean island where water is precious, but most reputable cafes will provide a glass of tap water with your espresso if you ask. It is the best way to cleanse your palate before taking the first sip, allowing you to taste the true profile of the beans.

The beauty of the cafe scene in Mahón lies in its diversity. You can start your morning in a bustling, marble-floored institution that has barely changed since the 1950s, and end your afternoon in a minimalist, modern space brewing experimental roasts. This blend of old and new creates a dynamic environment where every palate can find a home.

Ultimately, the best cafe is not always the one with the most expensive equipment or the rarest beans; it is the one that makes you feel welcome. Take your time, put your phone away, and watch the city move around you. In Mahón, coffee is more than just a beverage—it is an invitation to slow down and savor the moment.
