Vitoria-Gasteiz moves at its own considered pace. It is a city of shaded plazas, medieval streets, and a café culture that rewards slowing down. Whether you are starting the morning with a proper espresso or winding down with a glass of txakoli and a slice of carrot cake, the coffee scene here reflects the Basque capital’s understated character.
The old town, known as the Casco Viejo, hides some of the most atmospheric spots behind centuries-old stone walls. The Ensanche, the elegant nineteenth-century expansion, offers brighter, more contemporary spaces. Each neighborhood brings a different rhythm, but the common thread is a genuine pride in hospitality and local ingredients.
For remote workers, students, and travelers, finding the right café means more than just good coffee. It is about reliable Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and an environment that welcomes you to stay for a while. Many of the city’s best addresses balance specialty brews with a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere.
Local roasters have raised the bar in recent years. You will find carefully sourced beans from Latin America and Africa, prepared with precision on professional equipment. Alongside the specialty movement, traditional Basque cafés continue to serve strong cortados and fresh pastries with the same warmth they have offered for decades.
Food matters as much as the drink. Pintxos, cheesecakes, vegan bowls, and sourdough toasts are common companions to the coffee cups here. Knowing where to find the best combination of flavor, comfort, and value can transform a simple break into a highlight of your day.
This guide is built on direct experience, local recommendations, and a focus on what visitors actually need: clear directions, honest descriptions, and practical details. You will not find generic filler or paid placements. You will find a curated selection of places worth your time and money.
Below is a carefully chosen list of the twelve best cafés in Vitoria-Gasteiz right now. Each one offers something distinct, from exceptional specialty coffee to unforgettable homemade desserts.

Good cafe that sells speciality coffee, tasty sandwiches and cakes. The pear sponge cake was delicious. The coffee is as strong g as it should be (ai ordered a stronger cup than I normally like because I had terrible weak coffee in many other places but I should have ordered like I normally do because these guys do proper coffee).

Omg. I'm a coffee lover and I visit coffee shops from all and the world and let me tell you this is one of my favorites around Spain. Both food and coffee drinks are simply delicious. Staff is super nice and you won't regret it.

Amazing quality-price cafe.
They have a great selection of coffee and teas. My favourite are the cold coffees!
First time I can order a perfect Flat White in Vitoria 😍 I missed it so much
Danimator★★★★★
Some of the nicest coffee I've had the pleasure to enjoy in Spain. They use their own delicious roasts (nutty, cocoa, fruit flavours). Not too light and definitely not too dark and bitter. The aromas of the beans freshly ground are mouth watering!.. and are the nicest friendly people too. Oh, AND they use proper full milk not UHT. ♥️
Loved the coffee so much we bought some of their superb roast beans to take home for use in our Sage!
Check out the happy vibes in the latte art in the photo! Good times here.
Their cakes and sandwiches also looked moorish. Next time I'll try those too.
Highly recommend these amazing people and their superb coffee.
Please open a shop in Bilbao!🙏

We were in Gasteiz for a weekend and found this cool place. I like natural wines and it is the only place in town with a good natural wines selection. The place is very welcoming with graphics and ceramics made by the two owners, who are friendly and knowledgeable and can give the best recommendations. I bought a handmade cup for my coffee. It's nice to hear their story, we'll definitely be back when next in Gasteiz!
Nerea Chocolate★★★★★
☕ Today I went back to La Insostenible in Judizmendi for a cortado with specialty coffee from Puchero, a roaster from Valladolid. This café-bar specializes in natural wines. You can have breakfast, afternoon tea, or aperitifs. The owners are Eloísa and Andrés, new residents of Vitoria originally from Turin 🇮🇹 and Bucaramanga 🇨🇴. They serve regulars and newcomers alike with kindness. Eloísa makes the coffee cups herself. Andrés is a graphic designer. This creates a creative atmosphere in this place with good music and a pleasant ambiance. The hot chocolate is from Puchero and delicious. I hope to try more Italian products and attend one of the natural wine tastings they organize. Vitoria needed a place like this.
Rebeca Patillas Sobrino★★★★★
The best place in Vitoria-Gasteiz to enjoy natural wines—whether you're a connoisseur or not. They also have specialty coffees and quality matcha, which you can pair with their focaccia, pastries, and toast made with bread from a bakery in Álava. I recommend going for an aperitif (pair it with a spectacular charcuterie board!), brunch, or dinner. Honestly, any time of day is good, from breakfast to drinks. They have oysters on weekends. They frequently organize tastings and events. And the best thing is the atmosphere, starting with the amazing owners. Thank you, Elo and Andrés, for creating this place ❤️
Ariadna García★★★★★
A bar with a special touch in Judizmendi. They have specialty wines, kombucha, and coffee. For snacks, they offer Italian food made with quality ingredients; the menu is small, but they change some of the ingredients regularly. The owners put a lot of love into what they do and are very friendly. They also allow pets inside 🐕
I invite you to try it ☺️
amaia★★★★★
A really cool place, with quality products at a very reasonable price. We went for some wine and snacks and were truly impressed. Excellent wines and delicious portions, with exceptional service. Vegetarian options and dogs are welcome. We'll definitely be back.

Alexey Subach★★★★★
Such a great coffee shop. Both cappuccino and flat white were really good - the cappuccino was very light and balanced and the flat white was quite powerful yet not bitter or sour. The prices were extremely reasonable for the quality you get. The cups which the coffee was served in were simply outstanding - probably the best cups I’ve seen. This is the case where the way the coffee was served certainly boosted the experience. Overall I totally recommend this place, it was a highlight of the visit to this city!
P (Paulina P.)★★★★☆
This place is really unique; it’s a spot where I can find a homey atmosphere, great hospitality, and kindness. There isn't too much space, so you won't find a crowd or loud noise here. The prices are fair, and the value for money is very good. A nice thing is that every day you can find different kinds of homemade cookies and pastries.
Irina Karpova★★★★★
If you're looking for great coffee, this is the place to go. Excellent specialty coffee, anaerobic and dry processed with a V60 cone, expertly brewed. A wonderful, relaxed atmosphere, a wonderful, enthusiastic barista—it was the best choice!

Nice burgers there, very tasty. There are more options like sandwiches, salads, starters... but we didn't try them.
Ane★★★★★
This is our second time here for breakfast, and we're already looking forward to the next one. The waiter was incredibly friendly; it's impossible to start the day on a better note. We ordered two breakfasts, and both were delicious (numbers 5 and 6). They were two generous slices of toast with coffee and juice. Very filling and quite reasonably priced. We also noticed they had a good variety of pintxos, which looked very tasty. Highly recommended! Congratulations!
Sandra Giralda Rojas★★★★★
I went for breakfast this morning with a friend and the service couldn't have been better. The waitress who served us was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the toast was amazing—we were already looking forward to trying more. We'll definitely be back.
Ane Aberasturi★★★★★
They renovated the bar a while ago and it's fantastic. All the pintxos are delicious, and they've just started offering breakfast toast; we had the tomato, avocado, and egg one, but they have lots of different kinds.

This is a place where people must go... you might be wondering why? Well, just let me tell you that I had an amazing origin coffee from this lovely Cafe. Rafael, a Venezuelan entrepreneur and his wife are running this wonderful place. Don’t miss the chance to taste their products.
Pedro Dias★★★★★
good coffee and staff is nice. Specialty cafe w/ different origins and styles. Cake offer is quite good too. Decoration could be a bit more cozy, but at least is traditional spain decoration which gives some "flavour" to the space. Price is good.
Gorka Aguirre Gana★★★★★
A fantastic coffee shop. One of the best in town. Ideal for breakfast, with a selection of pintxos and pastries. The cakes look amazing. We only tried the tortilla, and it was delicious. A pleasant place with good music and very friendly staff.
Xabier Aguirre★★★★★
Without a doubt, one of the best cafes in Vitoria. I'm a regular customer, and all their options are spectacular. From treats for those with a sweet tooth, like homemade cakes, coconut macaroons, and cappuccinos, to signature coffees for the true coffee aficionados. And the service is impeccable.
Rut R.★★★★★
This bar was a great surprise, the service was excellent, and it's highly recommended for coffee lovers (they serve it without sugar, as it should be, although if you're feeling greedy you can get sugar, which they also have). The decor is somewhat retro and cozy, which I personally like, although you go to this bar mainly for the coffee. They also give you a card with information about the coffee you're drinking. 10 out of 10.

It was a mother's day. To celebrate it with my mom-in-law and husband, we opted for a new gastronomy experience.
Marvelous at that weekend offered a 7 course experimental menu. All dishes were new, innovative and quite refreshingly rare. It was not a feast to feel full but a moment to bond over curious food.
The interior is as curious as the food. Curious and cute in all the good ways.
Such menu was offered at 30 euros per person. I'd say worth it to try and enjoy. Definitely don't expect a typical Spanish lunch.
Igor Sinyutin★★★★★
Great staff. Lovely place and Amazing food!
Stiven Lopez★★★★★
Amazing food, excellent service and incredible price
Fabiano Zappacosta★★★★★
The name says it all! We had a couple drinks in a cozy, stylish, wonderful atmosphere. Totally recommended.
Hanah Al-Samaraie★★★★★
Expect the unexpected!
When you see this restaurant from the outside, you wouldn't expect much from it but it is indeed marvelous!
The quirky yet charming interior reflects the diversity of the food. We had the tasting menu for €20, which encombassed flavours from Italy, South-East Asian countries and Spain. All dishes absolutely delicious and beautifully balanced. This place is better value for money than most places.
Only critisism: if you don't know about it, you would walk past it. Also, it is a hint too dingy for my taste but that is something, you must decide for yourself.
I will totally come back! Thanks

A bar and café with delicious pintxos, like the excellent tortilla
and the "matrimonio" toast. Pleasant atmosphere and good service in a lovely place. Run by the owners, Laura and Alejandro; it shows. They've only been in this location a few months, but I like to stop by whenever I'm in the city center. Highly recommended.
Acidrón★★★★☆
Small, quiet, and pleasant place. It's run by a middle-aged woman and a young woman. I don't know if they have a menu, as we ordered some snacks. I sometimes stop by for a coffee, and friendliness is one of their defining characteristics. It's a simple and pleasant place with a small outdoor terrace.

Tips for Choosing Your Ideal Café in Vitoria-Gasteiz
The city’s café scene is diverse enough to suit almost any mood or need, but a little local knowledge goes a long way. These practical tips will help you match the right place to the right moment, avoid common tourist mistakes, and enjoy the city like a regular.
1. Know the Neighborhood Rhythm
The Casco Viejo is perfect for a historic, cozy atmosphere, but many of its smaller cafés fill up quickly during the midday pintxo rush. The Ensanche offers more spacious interiors and is often better for laptop work. If you want a quiet table, visit the old town before 11:00 or after 16:00.
2. Check the Roaster Before You Order
Specialty coffee in Vitoria-Gasteiz often comes from local or regional roasters. If you care about flavor profiles, ask which beans are on the grinder. Many baristas are happy to explain the origin and tasting notes. Cafés that roast their own beans or partner with Basque roasters tend to serve the freshest espresso and filter coffee.
3. Look for the Pintxo Window
A great café experience here often extends beyond coffee. Many of the best spots display their pintxos and cakes on the counter or in a glass case. Choose a place where the food is made in-house or sourced from a local bakery. The quality of a simple slice of Basque cheesecake or a tortilla pincho is usually a reliable indicator of overall care.
4. Plan Around Spanish Hours
Breakfast culture in the Basque Country runs later than in northern Europe or North America. Most cafés open between 8:00 and 9:00, and the morning rush peaks around 10:30. Lunch is typically from 13:30 to 15:00. If you want a quiet coffee, go between 12:00 and 13:00, when locals are still working and tourists are often sightseeing.
5. Wi-Fi and Outlets Are Not Guaranteed
Even in a university city, not every café welcomes laptops. Some traditional spots prioritize conversation and quick turnover, especially during meal times. If you need to work remotely, look for specialty coffee shops or larger cafés in the Ensanche. Ask politely about Wi-Fi before ordering if you plan to stay for more than an hour.
6. Bring Cash for Smaller Spots
While most central cafés accept cards, a few small, family-run places in the Casco Viejo still prefer cash for small purchases under five euros. Carrying a ten or twenty euro note will save you from an awkward walk to the nearest ATM, especially on a busy Saturday morning.
7. Order the Local Pairings
To experience Vitoria-Gasteiz like a local, pair your coffee with something regional. A cortado with a small slice of goxua, a traditional Basque cream dessert, or a simple butter pastry from a local bakery can be more memorable than any elaborate brunch dish. Ask for the house specialty rather than defaulting to a standard croissant.
Vitoria-Gasteiz rewards those who take their time. The best café afternoons here are rarely rushed. You sit by a window, watch the light move across a stone plaza, and let the city’s calm pace settle in.
Whether you are visiting for a weekend or settling in for a longer stay, these twelve cafés offer a reliable starting point. Use the list as a map, but do not be afraid to wander. The true pleasure of this city often comes from the small, unplanned discoveries between one good coffee and the next.
