10 Best Cafes in Cuenca

Cuenca is a city that feels suspended in time, famous for its dramatic clifftop Hanging Houses and the deep gorges that slice through its historic core. But beyond the medieval walls and Renaissance architecture, a quieter revolution has been brewing. Over the last decade, the city has developed a specialty coffee scene that rivals much larger Spanish destinations, blending traditional Castilian hospitality with a modern obsession for quality beans and precise brewing.

Finding the right spot to pause in Cuenca is essential, especially after navigating the steep, winding streets of the old town or trekking across the San Pablo Bridge. Whether you are a digital nomad looking for a reliable workspace or a traveler seeking the perfect flat white, the local café culture offers a surprising variety. You can find everything from third-wave minimalist bars to cozy, wood-beamed rooms where time slows down.

The best cafés in Cuenca are not just about caffeine; they are community hubs. Many double as bakeries, art galleries, or vinyl listening rooms, reflecting the creative spirit of the artists who have long been drawn to this UNESCO World Heritage city. The baristas here are knowledgeable and passionate, often happy to discuss the origin of their single-origin beans or the roasting profiles they use.

In this guide, I have personally visited and evaluated the local coffee landscape to bring you the definitive list of must-visit spots. I focused on the quality of the espresso, the atmosphere, the service, and the overall value to ensure you have the best experience possible. You will find options ranging from historic plazas to hidden side streets in the lower modern district.

While Cuenca is not as overwhelming in size as Madrid or Valencia, the layout can be tricky. The city is split between the ancient "Casco Antiguo" on the hill and the newer commercial area below. I have made sure to include locations in both zones so you can find a great brew regardless of where your explorations take you.

Whether you need a strong cortado to start your morning or a quiet corner to enjoy a herbal tea in the afternoon, this list has you covered. Prepare your palate for rich aromas, fresh pastries, and the unique atmosphere that only this Castilian city can offer. Here are the ten places that define Cuenca’s coffee culture right now.

30 minute waiting time for a few drinks (one of them being orange juice) and its not even close to being worth the wait. coffee tastes mid. matcha tastes bad. desayuno nordico tastes like nothing at all. not worth it.

Cafetería de toda la vida con nueva dirección y enfoque. Abierta todos los días y con pastelería casera propia, hemos estado a gusto, nos han atendido muy bien, volveremos.
María Luque★★★★★
From the outside, it resembles a traditional café, but inside, you'll feel like the old lives on within the new. Specialty coffee, high quality, homemade options with flavorful and robust products. The orange cake they gave us to try was spectacular, as were any of the options you see in the photos. The service is excellent. A place to return to.

It's a café with a relaxed atmosphere... The waitress was very friendly. We ordered a coffee with milk, a French toast (very good), and a Coca-Cola... (the 237ml Coca-Cola cost us €2.50). They also gave us a complimentary plate of corn nuts. There's soft background music (very pleasant). They have a terrace in the back. We were surprised that they don't have a menu; they told us that the items change regularly and the waitress informs you. We were disappointed that they don't have milkshakes. I'm not giving it 5 stars because of the price of the Coca-Cola (and it was a smaller can than usual; the French toast is cheaper than the Coca-Cola).
Eva Orenes Pajarón★☆☆☆☆
We sat for 10 minutes with the table piled high with the previous diners' plates, and when they finally took our order, they told us there was practically nothing left. We ordered, and after waiting 45 minutes, we went back to ask and were assured they would bring our order out immediately (they hadn't even made our coffees). When the waitress brought two of the things we had ordered, they turned out to be two sandwiches that had nothing in common with what we had ordered. After this incident, we complained, and the manager, instead of taking responsibility, blamed a waitress who had nothing to do with it. After waiting for more than an hour, we had to leave without breakfast. We won't be back.

Went there twice, second for matcha but too bad their matcha finished at 1pm on a Friday. At least they could have posted something about it. But overall, nice experience if not for the lack of matcha.

The food is reasonably priced, the service is fast and the staff is just okay, and the sangria is decent. The dessert I tried was very good, and I recommend the lentils, but the breaded chicken was almost inedible because it was so tough. Several of us ordered it, and out of the four we ordered, three were like that. The pasta is okay, with an acceptable flavor.
Sammy David Sabniewiez Corredor★★★★★
The place is located one street away from the bus stop that takes you to the train, they have daily promotions and for each round of beers they give you a very tasty tapa, recommended to stop by for a few beers.

We ate there on Saturday, and everything was delicious. We're vegetarians, and they adapted the menu for us, and it was very good. But the rest of the menu included a lamb stew that almost made me give up vegetarianism. The people there were all very nice too; we'll definitely be back when we're in Cuenca again!
Lucía García Sancho★★★★★
The service was spectacular. We loved the food so much we didn't have time to take more pictures of how amazing the dishes looked. We ordered one of each type of toast, a portion of calamari, potatoes, and fried pork belly. We highly recommend ordering these dishes, especially to share. We will definitely be back.

Perfect place to eat! The team is very friendly and welcoming. The burger and the steak are absolutely delicious. Totally worth every euro! Thank you so much!
Lizzie L★★★★☆
Delightful service from a friendly waiter. This out of the way place in the new town was a fun place to eat. We kept tucking in and then forgetting we should have taken a photo. The fried queso was originally six pieces with a delicious spicy tomato chutney. The patatas brava was served in a cheese sauce with ham on the top. The pork loin came with cubed potatoes and char grilled green peppers. My partner has the squid but baby squid were on offer. The puddings were less of a strength with liberally squeezed chocolate sauce. The welcome was exceptional. Easy to park in surrounding streets but avoid the zigzag lines. Would love to go back for the black bunned hamburger! But we noted they also have vegan dishes.
Algirdas Švilpa★★★★★
Found it on TripAdvisor. Sephia was great. I also tried hamburger from my friend, and some kinda of cheese also. All food was great! Some Spanish language would be useful here.

If you asked me to imagine the perfect bar/restaurant, Manjar Vermutería would be even better that. My boyfriend and I caught the semifinals of the World Cup here last night in their outdoor seating area which was packed. Despite how busy it was, the server was zipping around graciously and attentively. Between the food and the vermouth options, they have everything I crave and they use high quality ingredients which they prepare with excellence and care. We tried the gildas de anchoa, gildas de boquerón, marinera de anchoa with ensaladilla Manjar, sardina ahumada con hojaldre caramelizado, and the jamón ibérico. All were excellent and I will dream about this evening for the rest of my life. If we had more time in Cuenca, I would go back to try the rest of the menu. Thank you to the whole team at Manjar. This is hospitality at its finest!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ SPECTACULAR. After reading so many positive reviews, I'd been wanting to go for a while, but it hadn't been possible until today... The wait was absolutely worth it. It was a 10/10 EXPERIENCE, and we're already EAGER to go back. Simply INCREDIBLE. Each dish was as good as, or even better than, the last. What a TREAT we had! From the moment you walk in, you can feel the care and dedication to doing things right. The atmosphere is welcoming, the service friendly and attentive, and each dish arrives with impeccable presentation. We tried several things, and they were all exquisite. A very HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCT, treated with care and with surprising preparations. You can tell they don't settle for the usual, but rather strive to offer something different. And the vermouths... something for everyone! Perfectly served and with a selection that will delight any vermouth lover. It's such a joy to find a place like this: a unique, carefully curated concept with real personality. It's one of those places you leave wanting to return to... and recommend to everyone. I wish you every success, because you deserve it. Without a doubt, one of the best openings I've seen in a long time. Congratulations and see you very soon!
Yoana Martinez★★★★★

WHAT A FIND!!! Looking for a place to have dinner, we called to ask if we could bring our pet, and it was the best thing that could have happened. Rafa's service is fantastic, the food is incredible, and the prices are very reasonable. His recommendations were all amazing. If you love meat, you'll be blown away by the quality and flavor. And if you love croquettes, these are completely homemade and delicious. The suckling pig and apple croquettes, in particular, will leave you speechless. It's the perfect place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts 🖤 for making our visit to Cuenca so enjoyable. We wish you all the best, family.

I went for dinner on Tuesday night. Staff were nice. The food was okay. Tinto de verano tasted weird (worse tinto de verano I have ever tasted while staying for 2 years in Spain). I asked for recommendations but no one knew what was good. Located in the center.

This place was awesome! Great place to read a book with ambient sounding music playing in the background. One of my favorite Tapas Bars, albeit not traditional, in my three week visit to the country. The service was excellent and the tapas were of good quality.

Tips for Choosing the Right Café in Cuenca

Navigating the café scene in a city with such a distinct topography and culture requires a bit of local knowledge. To help you make the most of your time and avoid tourist traps, I have compiled a few essential strategies based on my experience living in and visiting the city. These tips will help you match the right café to your specific mood, schedule, and location.

Understand the Old Town vs. New Town Dynamic
If you are sightseeing near the Cathedral and the Hanging Houses, you will pay a slight premium for the view and the convenience. Cafés in the Casco Antiguo are perfect for atmospheric stops and resting your legs but can be busy. If you want a more relaxed, local vibe with lower prices and easier access to power outlets, head down the hill to the Carretería or San Fernando areas where the locals do their daily shopping.

Check the Roasting Date and Bean Origin
The specialty coffee scene in Cuenca takes freshness seriously. The best establishments will display the roasting date on their bags or menus. Don’t be afraid to ask the barista where the beans are from. If they can tell you the specific farm or region—like a high-altitude lot from Colombia or Ethiopia—you know you are in a place that respects the craft.

Look for the "Tostado Natural" Option
Spain has a long tradition of torrefacto roasting, which involves adding sugar during the roasting process to create a very dark, bitter bean. While traditional, it is often low quality. When ordering, look for "café natural" or "100% arábica" on the menu. This ensures you are getting a clean cup without the burnt, artificially sweetened aftertaste that can sometimes plague standard Spanish bars.

Timing is Everything
Cuenca operates on a specific rhythm. If you want a quiet, peaceful coffee, avoid the 11:00 AM rush when the mid-morning break happens, and the 5:00 PM merienda rush. For the best pastries and croissants, go early in the morning. If you are looking for a lively atmosphere to people-watch, the late afternoon is prime time when families and students fill the terraces.

Don’t Skip the Non-Coffee Offerings
While this is a list of the best cafés, many of these spots excel at more than just espresso. In Cuenca, the quality of the hot chocolate, the freshness of the orange juice, or the texture of the cheesecake can be a better indicator of a café’s overall standards than the coffee itself. If you are traveling with someone who doesn’t drink caffeine, choose a venue that takes pride in its entire menu, ensuring everyone has a high-quality experience.

Consider the Wi-Fi and Workspace Needs
If you are a remote worker, not every café in Cuenca is suited for laptops. Many of the traditional spots in the old town are small and prefer a faster turnover of tables. Before settling in for a two-hour work session, look for larger spaces or ask the staff if it is okay to work. The more modern, specialty-focused spots in the lower city are generally more accommodating to digital nomads and often have dedicated tables near outlets.

The beauty of exploring Cuenca’s café scene is that it forces you to slow down. Unlike the fast-paced espresso bars of Italy or the grab-and-go culture of the US, Cuenca encourages you to sit, savor, and watch the world pass by against a backdrop of ochre-colored stone and blue sky.

Whether you choose a terrace overlooking the Huécar gorge or a hidden spot near the Plaza Mayor, the experience is about more than just hydration. It is about connecting with the rhythm of the city. So, pick a spot from the list, order a specialty brew or a classic café con leche, and let the unique magic of Cuenca do the rest.
