Perched high on a dramatic limestone spur between the Júcar and Huécar rivers, Cuenca is a visual masterpiece of medieval architecture. While most travelers flock here to gaze at the gravity-defying Casas Colgadas or wander the cobbled lanes of the old town, the city has quietly cultivated a reputation as one of Castilla-La Mancha’s most exciting culinary destinations. The dining scene here is a reflection of the landscape itself: rugged, authentic, and deeply rooted in tradition, yet increasingly open to modern innovation.
Eating out in Cuenca is an exercise in understanding the local terroir. The surrounding Serranía de Cuenca provides a bounty of wild game, aromatic honey, and robust mushrooms, while the nearby pastures yield some of the finest lamb and Manchego cheese in Spain. Chefs here respect the harsh climate and the hardworking shepherds who have shaped the region’s gastronomy for centuries. As a result, menus are often dominated by slow-cooked stews, roasted meats, and hearty legumes designed to warm you from the inside out.
However, the restaurant landscape is far from monolithic. Alongside the traditional mesones and asadores that have fed generations of conquenses, a new wave of young chefs is reinterpreting local ingredients with contemporary techniques. This creates a delightful tension for the visitor: you can enjoy a rustic plate of morteruelo in a centuries-old tavern for lunch, then sit down to a refined tasting menu with panoramic river views for dinner.
Navigating the city’s food scene requires a bit of local insight. The geography of Cuenca is split between the modern lower town (Cuenca nueva) and the historic upper town (Cuenca antigua). While the lower town offers everyday value and where the locals live, the old town—despite its tourist draw—houses some of the most atmospheric dining rooms in the entire country. Finding the right balance between ambiance, price, and authenticity is key to a successful culinary trip.
Price points here are generally more forgiving than in Madrid or Barcelona, but quality remains exceptionally high. You will find that portions are generous, wine lists are dominated by excellent regional Denominaciones de Origen like La Mancha and Manchuela, and service carries a warmth that comes from a city that is still genuinely happy to host visitors.
To help you cut through the noise and avoid tourist traps, we have curated a list of the best places to eat right now. This selection prioritizes flavor, ingredient sourcing, and atmosphere, ensuring you experience the true taste of Cuenca, whether you are looking for a quick tapas crawl or a long, luxurious lunch.
Below, you will find the essential restaurants that define this historic city’s culinary identity.

The restaurant was excellent, Fran is the best. I would absolutely say that this is the best fine dinning in Cuenca. We paid 40 € per person and got a full 6 course tasting of various meals + free drinks. Absolutely fair pricing with excellent service - would recommend to everyone.

Came here because of a recommendation and it didn't disappoint! The Vaca mayor menu is a lot of beef, but all are amazing quality. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the owner, Fran and his energy will make you feel very welcome. Food is server fast, so make sure you're hungry.
Felix★★★☆☆
Bit of a disappointing experience and feels well overrated. I think that’s because we ordered a la carte and not the menu - so don’t make that mistake and go for the menu when you do decide to go.
A la carte dishes were incredibly small, too pricey for that, the main dishes came without any sides - the only reason we didn’t leave hungry is because of the unlimited bread you get. Wine selection is nice and reasonably priced.
The ambience is not great - we actually had a decent table, but many others were quite bad, eg next to an ugly room where they keep fridges for drinks etc with the door always open.
The chef is nice - but he needs to chill out. It feels like he is on coke (hopefully not) - incredibly stressed out, hectic, erratic - his demeanour spills over to the atmosphere.
For 140€ for 2 you can get much better in Cuenca (eg in Raff San Pedro)
Kristina Duspara★★★★★
Very pleased with the servise. The chef was polite, explained all the courses of the food. Friendly and cousy invironment. I would recommend 5Setidos to everyone who appreciate excellent fine dining.

We were celebrating a Birthday, our reserved table was down steep stairs, not great if you have mobility issues.
Downstairs was very quiet, no music or atmosphere, upstairs seemed to be booked, if we wanted upstairs we should have asked.
The starters and mains were lovely , we ordered beef, and lamb with a couple of tasty starters.
However the desserts were very disappointing , the Philipino Cake and Pistacio Cake had no taste, when we asked what Philipino Cake was meant to taste like , the waitress showed us a photo on Google of a Philipino candy bar, with the words white chocolate ???
There seemed to be too much gelatine in both cakes, and both lacked taste.
Unfortunately, our coffees came before our desserts , after the dessert the waiter then placed an unopened bottle of crema de pistachio, thus was hurriedly placed on the table unopened for us to help ourselves too.
This was the second visit to this restaurant which we found disappointing this time round.

we were in Cuenca for our Thirtieth Anniversary so wanted to have a nice meal in a good restaurant. After doing some research we decided to book here and book the Menu Degustation with Wine.
We arrived and were greeted by the the staff and shown to our table. the restaurant itself if lovely being built into the cellars of a house. the staff were lovely offering to speak in either Spanish or English.
The food was simply. wonderful with an explanation of what you were eating and where it came from. also the wines that accompanied each course were wonderful and matched to food perfectly.
We had such a lovely experience and it really rounded off a perfect day for us. Thank you to all the staff who made this experience memorable. Highly recommended.

An allround experience: from the delicious food till the service, from the wineglasses till the building itself. We had a wonderful evening, thanks!!!

Very disappointing experience—the worst restaurant we tried in Cuenca.
We ordered croquettes, eggplant, and cod, and none of the dishes were acceptable in terms of quality or execution.

Amazing place in Cuenca. Worth traveling there. Cozy surroundings, top class service and fantastic food. We had such a great evening and experience. And the cheesecake was the best I have ever had - I am fantastic cheesecake lover and this one was just phenomenal. We will definitely return to Cuenca just to dine at Raff San Pedro again
Rick McWane (Rick)★★★★★
Restaurant Raff San Pedro is a great place. We arrived late, however, they were able to accommodate us and let us have a bottle of wine and some cheese along with their incredible homemade bread. We had a great conversation with the waitress and shared our travels with her. Overall it was an incredible experience. I highly recommend this restaurant

From the amuse-bouche to the dessert each dish is a culinary delight! Every plate is prepared and presented with artistry, showcasing the staff's passion for food.
We highly recommend the cheesecake. The best we had in Spain!

Fantastic restaurant for authentic food at a reasonable price!
Recommend reserving a table here, especially on weekends, when we were at our table a number of people came but all tables were either reserved or full unfortunately.
We had the scrambled eggs with asparagus and ham and the ham hock. Both were beautiful and some of the best food I have ever had.
Staff were friendly and welcoming even with our broken Spanish. Had such a lovely time and returning has been put on our bucket list
Szumiao C.★★★★★
Didn't try special food in Cuenca, but Had normal menu Del dia with salad, grilled chicken with potatos and tinto de verano and cafe for 10€ in total! very valuable place to eat! It's popular usually full during eating hours.
Services are good too! Worth trying.
Petra★★★☆☆
We had lunch here a couple of days ago. Arrived earlier than the usual Spanish lunch time, which is at about 1PM, so the restaurant wasn’t that busy. For some reason we weren’t served bread. We had to order four raciones, which were okay, but it was strange without any bread to pair it with. The servings are also not consistent as we saw a table served with the exact meal but with more stuff.
Overall the place is dainty. Maybe it would be best to try the menu del dia (although they don’t have much options for that neither) as it is usually a fixed set of meal.
Menu: Okay
Price: €€
Roberto Lozano★★★★★
The food here was very delicious. Didn't really know what to get. Ended up ordering Gambas al ajillo (watch out those chilies are spicy), Manchego, and Sartén de la casa (the best dish we ate). We also got some fried potatoes to get some food into our picky daughters. Definitely would recommend.
Martin Grahan★☆☆☆☆
If you want the "menu of the day" you have to explicitly ask for it and is not on paper, the guy just mumbles the dishes out and you have to figure ASAP, if you don't speak Spanish forget about it.
Then the food takes AGES to come and when it finally arrives is the most bland tasteless crap I ever had in Spain.
To put something positive the waiters are super attentive.
Idk how they got such a positive score, probably it was good in the past, well definitely is not good anymore!

Glad they opened exactly on time at 19:30 otherwise we would have been in trouble.
I had the lamb intestines delicacy and the brochetta de pollo. The lamb intestines weren't my favourite. Crispy but otherwise a touch flavourless, a little bit bitter and an odd flavour at times.
The skewer was not bad. The black salt was cool. The potatoes were very nice and crispy. The corn was good. The chicken was cooked well but lacking in any spice or herbs which did make it a bit bland.
Overall it's ok if your hungry and the price of 16 euros is ok.
It would be good if you updated the opening times online.

Amazing place with authentic food from Cuenca. We had a salad with jamon de pato and cannelon with local meat, both were great. The quality of dishes is excellent. Service was great too. Highly recommended!

Fantastic......enough said !...,the grilled meat on skewers is cooked perfectly. Try the house red wine, it's from the region and delicious... imagine drinking liquid velvet.... it's that good, I should know I've had enough red in my time !!!!

Absolutely good food, highly recommend crispy pork belly (starter) and pork ribs and desserts (they put in thoughts in their desserts).
We also ordered octopus and beef, they are good too, but pork is the best.
Owner/ host is very friendly to try to explain each dish to us in English.

I great place to try the local dishes. I had Ajoarriero and Morteruelo, which were both excellent. It was also a lot of food for one person. Service is excellent and the owner will explain any dishes you don't understand.

Amazing hospitality,
Amazing location after a magnificent walk up and down up and down.
Beer first with the Roasted lamb croquette.
Amazing. Croquettes were superb.
Followed by a hearty oxtail with port wine stew and sweet potato chips.
Oxtail stew melted in mouth and very delicious.
The Caesar Cheese cake with Pistachios a perfect finish. Not heavy, not to sweet but delicious.
What a perfect cosy little Restaurant we stumbled upon
Way up on a magnificent hill surrounded by medieval building, wild flowers and scenery to die for.
Thankyou to the beautiful Kiva and Natalia for your wonderful service.
Muchas Gracias.

Amazing food. You can eat some really nice regional dishes. We ordered a Morteruelo and Cordero for main course and Resolí liquor for dessert and a regional red wine as well.
The waiters are polite. Veronica is a good waitress. She was very professional in her work during our lunch.
I will definitely come here again.
Badger Girl★★★★★
Fabulous restaurant that far exceeded our expectations. We had the menu del dia, 2 days running, which is rare for us as we usually try to sample as many different places as possible. The quality of the food and inventiveness of the dishes was exceptional for the price and the staff were so helpful as we practiced our spanish! A real gem.
Arnab Pal★★★★☆
To start with, the restaurant is a bit on the expensive side compared to other Spanish restaurants. However, given its strategic position, I reckon all five restaurants in the area would be similarly priced.
The restaurant was packed, so I had to sit outside. Although it was cold, it was a wise choice given the amazing views.
I tried the pork cheek, which was succulent but left me wanting more as the portion was small.
The coffee with milk was a pleasantly good.
The staff were friendly and courteous, although we had a bit of difficulty communicating in English.

We stopped by for a drink a quick bite after a full day of mountain biking in Cuenca. The place was packed with people on the terrace. The good thing is they serve food at all time so we were able to order from the full menu at around 6.30pm. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was great on the terrace on a sunny afternoon.

Great restaurant by the river of Cuenca, very tasty food and reasonable priced. Totally recommended! We had the rice with chicken and artichokes.
Helio Roque★★★★☆
It's a big restaurant with several rooms and spaces for seating. We sat next to the kitchen exit and bar. The space makes a bit of greenhouse effect and gets slightly uncomfortable. We asked them to close the sealing shades and they immediately took care of it. The drinks took a while to arrive even though I could see them served and waiting to come to the table. We tried the croquetas, secreto, chipirones, tomate, ensaladilla, y entrecot. The food was good, with my favorite being the entrecot. The deserts were very good, having tried the colant, torija and the hojaldre de mazana. The torija was my favorite while the coulant in my opinion is not the greatest. Despite the overall good impression, there was a bit of desorganization in the service.
Jennifer Lenihan★★★★★
Nice atmosphere. Some dishes were delicious but not many good vegetarian options.
Marie Lillenes Midtun★★★★★
We had a very nice experience. Mario, the waiter, gave us excellent service and guided us through the menu to recommend the perfect quantity of food to meet our wishes. The food was amazing! I realle recommend the salads, but everything was amazing, really!

We went without a reservation, and they really made room for us and gave us excellent service, even though we were fully booked.
Unfortunately, people who arrived later without reservations couldn't be served because there was no more room. It's IMPORTANT to call and make a reservation.
We ate very well; the food was exquisite. 100% recommended. Congratulations!

Very average. The broken eggs were served with runny yolks, like hard-boiled eggs. The cannelloni weren't cannelloni at all; they were more like fajitas, and the clove flavor was overpowering. The suckling pig was good, juicy, and crispy. The best part was the desserts (we ordered lemon sorbet and cheesecake).

Total recommendation, had dinner here twice (returned after the gorgeous first time and decided we HAD to come back), everything was very very good. When we were about to order too much, we were kindly warned to revise our order. We had grilled pork fillet with baked potatos and grilled vegetables the first night, fried knuckle of pork with home fried potatoes and grilled green peppers and a game stew with liver amd bay leaf typical of Cuenca ("Morteruelo"), as well as organic red wine from the region. These were the best dinner experiences we had on this trip through Spain.

Great place for traditional Spanish food. The menu is full of delicious options and the service was great. You get a little tapas when ordering drinks, in our case it was salmorejo. All the dishes and desserts are noticeably homemade and of great quality. Again, we really loved the attention from the service.

FANTASTIC !
We had a fantastic meal here. Everything was delicious, (Fabada - I don’t like it , but here it was very delicious) the steak was absolutely outstanding - cooked to perfection and full of flavour. The service was just as impressive: warm, attentive and genuinely friendly. Very nice people here. We felt very welcome from start to finish. I’d happily come back and highly recommend this place. You will not regret it !!!!

Practical Tips for Dining in Cuenca
To make the most of your gastronomic journey through this historic city, it helps to understand the local dining customs and logistics. Cuenca is a city of steep hills and deep traditions, and a little preparation goes a long way. Here is how to eat like a local and avoid the common pitfalls that often catch first-time visitors off guard.
1. Book Ahead for the Old Town
If you have your heart set on dining in the Casco Antiguo, especially on a weekend, reservations are non-negotiable. The dining rooms are often small, carved into the rock face or nestled in medieval buildings. During peak seasons (spring and autumn), the best terraces with views of the Hoz del Huécar fill up days in advance. Do not risk being turned away; a quick phone call or online booking will secure your spot.
2. Embrace the "Menú del Día"
For lunch, look for the "Menú del Día." This fixed-price menu is a fantastic way to sample high-quality regional cooking without breaking the bank. Typically offered from Monday to Friday, it includes a first course (often a legume stew or soup), a hearty main course like roast lamb or cod, a dessert, and a drink. It is the best value in the city and gives you insight into what locals actually eat on a daily basis.
3. Do Not Skip the Regional Starters
When ordering à la carte, resist the urge to jump straight to the steak. Cuenca’s identity lives in its spoon dishes and pâtés. You must try morteruelo (a warm, spiced pâté often served with bread), ajoarriero (salt cod whipped with potato, garlic, and oil), and zarajos (grilled lamb intestines, a true delicacy for the adventurous). These dishes are the soul of the Serranía and are rarely replicated well outside the region.
4. Pair with Local Wines
While Rioja is famous, you are in the heart of Manchuela and La Mancha wine country. Ask your server for a local red wine made from the Bobal grape or a crisp white from the Albilla variety. These wines are often incredibly affordable and pair perfectly with the heavy, gamey flavors of the local cuisine. It is a great way to support local producers and taste something you likely cannot find at home.
5. Prepare for the Terrain
Cuenca is a city of verticality. If you are dining in the old town and staying in the new town, or vice versa, account for the walk. The streets are steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. If mobility is a concern, consider taking a taxi up to the Plaza Mayor rather than attempting the climb after a heavy meal and a bottle of wine.
The culinary landscape of Cuenca is a testament to the city’s resilience and its deep respect for the land. It is a place where you can taste history in a bowl of beans and see the future in a creatively plated dessert. Whether you spend your days hiking the Ruta de las Caras or exploring the abstract art at the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, you will find that the food serves as the perfect anchor to the experience.
As you plan your visit, remember that eating in Cuenca is not about rushing. It is about settling into a wooden chair, listening to the wind sweep through the gorge, and letting the flavors of the high plateau tell their story. Buen provecho.
