Perched on the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol, Nerja offers a refreshing contrast to the bustling concrete resorts found further west. This charming town has managed to preserve its traditional Andalusian soul, characterized by narrow, whitewashed streets and breathtaking coastal views. While many travelers come for the beaches, they often stay for the rich history, natural wonders, and the relaxed, authentic atmosphere that defines this stretch of the Spanish coastline.
Unlike the purpose-built tourist hubs nearby, Nerja feels like a living, breathing community that happens to welcome visitors with open arms. The town is anchored by the iconic Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined promenade that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. From this central vantage point, you can gaze down at the sandy coves below or look inland toward the rugged Sierra de Almijara mountains that frame the horizon.
Planning an itinerary here involves balancing leisure with exploration. You can spend your mornings wandering through ancient caves, your afternoons snorkeling in crystal-clear water, and your evenings enjoying tapas in bustling local plazas. The compact nature of the town makes it incredibly walkable, allowing you to soak in the sights without the need for constant transportation.
However, the true magic of Nerja often lies just outside the immediate town center. The surrounding natural park offers dramatic cliffs, hidden waterfalls, and hiking trails that appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you are traveling as a couple seeking romance, a family looking for safe beaches, or a solo adventurer chasing views, Nerja provides a versatile backdrop.
To help you make the most of your visit, we have curated a list of the must-see sights and experiences. This selection highlights the essential locations that define the character and beauty of this unique destination. From underground marvels to sun-drenched shores, these are the places that should be on your radar.
Before you set off, it is worth understanding that some attractions require a bit of planning, whether that means booking tickets in advance or wearing the right shoes. The geography of the area means that while some spots are right in the heart of town, others require a short drive or a scenic walk. Rest assured, the effort is always rewarded with stunning vistas and memorable moments.
Below, you will find the definitive guide to the top attractions that showcase the very best of Nerja.

What a place!! A must visit if you’re in the area. You have to be prepared for plenty of steps but worth every one of them. Stunning natural formations and steeped in history. It complements one of my new favourite parts of España as Nerja itself is a truly beautiful part of the world. The locals clearly take pride in their immaculate town as well. Visit and enjoy.
The one caveat would be that road train thingy. Terrible reviews for good reason. Get a cab to avoid being stressed, it’s literally my only bad experience. The Caves, the town. Treat yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
Adam Skendrovic★★★★★
Really exciting and interesting visit, much bigger inside the caves than I was expecting, I was quite impressed. Sometimes looking up seeing the humongous stalactites directly above you was a bit thrilling.
The VR room was also quite a exciting endeavour, I'm quite a noob as far as VR goes so it really took me by surprise with the occasional jump scare and involuntary movement!
Overall a great tourist attraction, not anything if do again but a 10/10 for me.
Matt Porretta★★★★★
Pretty cool cave experience! If you are anywhere in the area I definitely recommend a visit out here. It was reasonable for the price. We took this trolley car/train thing back into town which was pretty cool also. Definitely recommend this place!
Ashley Briggs★★★★★
If you’re even remotely considering visiting this cave, just go. It’s truly one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever experienced. We bought tickets when we got there, and there were spots available for just a few minutes from when we bought our tickets. I don’t recommend buying a ticket in advance, but might be different on a weekend or when they have a special event.
Nothing prepares you for seeing it in person. The size is absolutely massive. It is easily one of the largest caves I’ve ever been in. The features create this unreal, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
What really sets it apart is how different it feels from other caves. It’s not just another rock formation; it feels alive, shaped by the ocean in a way that’s both powerful and peaceful at the same time.
I’ve also heard they host concerts here, and I can’t even imagine how incredible that must be. The acoustics and setting would be unforgettable.
Pictures don’t do it justice. This is one of those places you have to experience for yourself. They do have an audio guide that you can download to listen to while you go through the cave, marked with certain spots to learn more.

Amazing place with a truly special atmosphere. The caves are absolutely gorgeous and mysterious, it is quite dark inside but it doesn't feel grim but rather inviting and mysterious. Definitely worth a visit if you love nature. The area around the cave is also very beautiful it is green, clean and has plenty of amenities.

You can walk along the main road to the bridge and see it, but if you're feeling a little bit more adventurous, it's worth the walk up the gravel paths, past the small farms and you can get to it from around the back. Google maps will show you a route that gets you there up past the sugar mill, through an underpass and then a viewpoint to take even better snaps.
L and D O C★★★★☆
Worth a call if you are traveling to the caves.
Built in 1880 to carry water from Nerja to the sugar refinery in Maro.
Still used for agricultural irrigation.
Visible from the main road, go on the local road if you want a better view.
Pavel Subert★★★★★
It’s worth stopping there for a few photos on your way from the caves 👍
Jenni Bonifacio★★★★☆
Worth an early morning walk from Nerja. Took about an hour along the main road and then through farm land. Stunning architecture.

Must see.
These is a beautiful easy walking path with fantastic views. Starting in nerja caves to nerja beaches, which really passes by the aqueduct.
The aqueduct was under restoration in 2010 and looks fantastic
Path also goes along the maro fabric and beautifully takes you to the beach

This is our first visit since the renovation in 2019. The changes have made a very positive difference to the galleries. The use of the audio description via the museum app is informative and clear, as are the signs indicating when to listen to each recording. The history of Nerja and Maro from Phoenician to modern times is covered in detail in the upper galleries, as are the Nerja Caves, in the lower galleries. But leave at least 2 and a half hours if you like to take everything in. The museum closes at 4pm and the lights go out! Thank you to the very helpful and friendly staff.
Ella M-A★★★★★
There are lockers for your bags and a wheelchair for visitors. The lockers require a 1 euro coin. There is air conditioning, the museum is really nice and interesting. There is an audio guide you can download on your phone which is really good. There is 4 floors, lifts and toilets. Your ticket is free if you show your Nerja Caves ticket! 🤩 lovely staff, we managed to go round in about an hour.

Just visited last week and what a great experience. For a small town this is decidedly a 'Capital' experience worthy of Malaga or even Madrid.
The well designed multimedia exhibits cover the whole spectrum of Nerja history from the earliest times and even references the tragedy of the Civil War, a topic so often 'hidden under the carpet' in Spain.
If you haven't been I'd urge you to visit and give yourself plenty of time to take it all in.....

This museum is an addition to the cave del Nejra. Provides great information about prehistoric times. It is very readable and transparent. Visiting caves del Nejra -This is a must-see next stop.

surprisingly good museum. Small but interesting, with plenty to see if you want to learn a bit more about Nerja. Worth the visit.

Delicious double chicken. Good and friendly service. Clean and nice facilities, but my cappuccino was only luke warm, 45-50⁰C. I complained and they took it back to heat it and it was only a little bit warmer. Complained again, but not much warmer the third time so I gave in and had my cold Coffee. Has happened twice before that without me complaining. I also had this experience in mcdonald in Benidorm Finestrat, so it may be the mcdonald equipment or a Standard Operational Procedure fault.

Its lovely! My pictures have NO FILTER. Water is very beautiful, crystal clear, you can see loads of fish species swimming around. You need to take a kayak or boat to reach it. Best path for us was from playa burriana, 30€/3 hours. Loved it so much 🤍
Aneta Jančia★★★★★
Very beautiful waterfall, feels like from movie!🥰We wanted to borrow paddleboard or kayak, but unfortunately they were all occupied at the moment. We decided to swim there and it was the best decision! So if you're a good swimmer, you can save money:)
Tanja Helminen★★★★☆
The waterfall is dry, but the turquoise water and caves are amazing. You can rent a kayak for 10e/hour. You need to park little bit far from the beach, because it's not possible to go all the way down, but later you can take a bus back to your car.
Tom Reeve★★★★★
Beautiful place. We rented a boat to go and see the waterfall. It became quite busy with other boats and kayaks but it was well worth the visit.
Alexia Ursache★★★★☆
The waterfall only has water only once a few years, the water is used for the avocado cultures in the area. When it does, it looks amazing, you can reach it by water renting a kayak or SUP from playa de Maro or playa Burriana, it’s a great experience. From above, waterfall is visible only from a drone.

Accessible by bicycle or by foot. The road is closed at the parking lot near Nerja Caves for cars and motorcycles.
We walked there and back, a total of 12km.

Clean water to drink, but the attraktion to this place is the old mine, that is open. Take some powerfull ligthing with you and go exploring. But be carefull. It is Rocky and goes way in... There is also a fine hiking pass to the top of the mountain.

We visited Playa Burriana in the middle of August 2026 during our holiday in Nerja, and we really enjoyed spending some time here. ☀️
We were even lucky enough to find free street parking nearby, which was a great bonus in the busy summer season! 🚗
The beach is around a 15-minute walk from the Balcón de Europa, so it’s quite easy to combine a visit to both places. The beach itself is lovely for relaxing and chilling, with a few palm trees giving it that nice Spanish holiday feel. 🌴❤️
There are also other smaller beaches nearby, so you can easily walk along the coastline and explore a little more.
Not the most spectacular beach we’ve ever visited, but definitely a nice, convenient and enjoyable place to spend a few hours while exploring Nerja.
Would happily come back! 🇪🇸☀️🌊
Daniela Lopes★★★★★
Burriana Beach offers so many fun adventures, like kayaking, banana boat rides, and jet skis! 🌊✨ It’s also perfect for taking amazing photos, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. There are public bathrooms and beach showers, and everyone we met was so friendly and helpful with tourists. Absolutely loved it! 💙
Nádia Roque★★★★★
Best beach in our trip around Malaga, Marbella, nerja. You have lots of fun activities like speed sofa and kayaks to Maro Waterfall. Water temperature was perfect!! Crystal clear waters, lots of restaurants, shops, and bars! 1 km away from centre.
Andra Kris★☆☆☆☆
Unfortunately, Burriana Beach in Nerja was quite disappointing. The beach was extremely crowded, and the loungers were old, dirty, and placed far too close to each other, making it difficult to relax and enjoy the beach.
The water was also not as blue and clear as we expected, probably because of the large number of people. Overall, we didn’t find it as beautiful or enjoyable as we had hoped.
In our opinion, it’s better to visit one of the other beaches around Nerja if you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, cleaner surroundings, and clearer water.
Bruno Da Ros★★★★★
Lovely place, very well structured with plenty of amenities, shops, chiringuitos, parasol and sunbed services. It caters for all ages. Chilled vibes. We visited as a couple, paid 22€ to stay all day on a wooden sunbed with mattress, very comfortable, clean and organised. The water was cold so we didn’t have a swim but the sea definitely looked very clean.

Lee Griffiths★★★★★
Really enjoyed this beach. Very quaint and didn’t seem too busy. Maybe because of the 117 steps down to the beach from the roadside. Fortunately the location is really good if you’re in the car and parking from the big car park. Beach is nice. Water was clear. We had an unfortunate jellyfish sting for my son, but seemed to be a freak occurrence (prob the only one around because many people were in the water all afternoon) but the lifeguard was really helpful. Pictures don’t do the beach justice.
Andrés Cepeda★★★★★
Beautiful small beach, relaxing, nice sand, lifeguard, many many cats around in the stairs from the top to the beach. Amazing setting… the only thing is that I couldn’t get in it because it had a red flag but just watching it was beautiful.
Ronald Gase★★★★★
Small but georgeous beach close to the center of Nerja. You can reach the beach via a range of stairs an, especially when there is or has been a strong inland wind, the sea can be quite rough. Don't go swimming when it's windy because of the strong current.
Grace Corby★★★★★
What a heavenly little beach! Crystal clear water, manageable (small) pebbles, no waves, rocky outcrops to explore. Perfecto 👌🏼
Lucille Aires★★★★★
Cool spot, there’s space for everyone even if it looks small (at least for the days we were here). There’s a lifeguard working and it’s pretty close to the Balcón de Europa

Nerja Cave Park… a place that truly commands a bit more respect.
An amazing site that genuinely takes your breath away. The scale, the formations, the atmosphere… it’s one of those places where photos almost feel unnecessary — but still, I’ll let them speak for themselves.
That said, let’s be honest: the ticket prices are quite on the expensive side. It’s not exactly a casual stop you do without thinking twice.
However… despite the cost, I do think it’s worth it. It’s a unique natural wonder, and once you’re inside, the experience kind of justifies the price.
Impressive, powerful, and definitely memorable.
Ashley Perry★★★★★
The caves were great, but you need to be aware they are not in Nerja, they are in Maro, and you can take a train to get there from Nerja. At the time I am writing this there is a map location in Nerja titled Nerja Cave Park but that is NOT where they are. Links to cave site and train below 👇

Evan King★★★★★
Incredibly cool. I have never been in a cave this large or anywhere close. It was very impressive. We got in without buying tickets in advance, but I imagine it gets quite busy on nicer days and during tourist season. There is a hiking trail, a park, room for picnicking, a restaurant, and interpretive signs throughout. Oh, and since you're in Europe I should mention there is a large, easily accessible restroom. Bonus!!
Neville Johnson★★★★★
Fabulous experience. We arrived early (10:30) and most of the walk around the cave was spent on our own. You go on a large loop and there is an opportunity to go around again but this might o ly be the case if it is quiet. It was getting busy as we left.
The is a free audit you can download. It's OK but not really needed . The caves are so impressive on their own
Mzazi★★★★★
Wow ! Breath taking !, well worth going to see , we were staying in Malaga and saw an advert for these caves,
We managed to catch a bus from the town centre bus station (the bus you need to catch has “Matril” as its last stop),
(Make sure to buy your bus ticket from the driver and not from the booth at the bus station as we were overcharged by around €15 buying from the booth)
you need to get off the bus next to a roundabout at a stop called Maro near to hotel Al-Andalas, look out for the signs for the cave and note the bus will go all the way around this roundabout and back on itself to stop at the bus stop
From here it’s a few hundred yards walk up to the cave entrance
These caves are just amazing and the photos and videos don’t do them justice
The caves were discovered by 5 boys missing a school day in 1959 exploring a small local known cave then seeing some bats fly out of a crevice they entered the crevice and found these caves !
There’s a lot of steep steps to climb all through the caves caverns so you’ll need to be quite fit and able
It was €17 each to enter, you pay via the touch screen machine on the right of the entrance then you can enter the cave on the left
They offer to take your photo upon entry which you can then buy with your image imposed on the cave background on your exit for €7

Always well worth a visit to the Parque Verano Azul with its memories of the TV series which brought so many people to Nerja. The replica of the boat (El Barco) has been enhanced by the images of the characters from the show now appearing on deck and in the various posters around the park.
The only thing missing is the statue of Chanquete which is in the tourism office in the town centre.

Practical Tips for Visiting Nerja Attractions
To ensure your experience in Nerja is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, it helps to consider a few logistical details before you head out. The town’s popularity means that timing and preparation can significantly impact your comfort levels, especially during the peak summer months. By following these recommendations, you can navigate the area like a seasoned local and avoid common tourist pitfalls.
- Book the Caves in Advance: The Cueva de Nerja is the most popular attraction in the region and tickets often sell out days in advance, especially during holidays. Secure your time slot online to avoid long queues and disappointment.
- Wear Appropriate Footwear: While flip-flops are fine for the beach, exploring the old town’s cobbled streets or hiking the Río Chíllar requires sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip.
- Respect the Siesta: Many smaller shops and some attractions close during the afternoon (roughly 2 PM to 5 PM). Plan indoor activities or beach time for these hours and save shopping for the cooler evening.
- Use Public Parking on the Outskirts: Driving through the narrow streets of Nerja’s center can be stressful. Park in the large municipal lots on the edge of town and walk in to save time and protect your rental car’s mirrors.
- Bring Cash for Chiringuitos: While most established restaurants accept cards, the smaller beach bars (chiringuitos) and kiosks near natural spots often prefer cash for small purchases like drinks or ice cream.
- Check the River Conditions: If you plan to hike the Río Chíllar, check the recent weather forecast. Flash flooding can occur, and the water level can change the difficulty of the hike drastically.
Exploring Nerja is about embracing the slower pace of Andalusian life. Whether you are watching the sunset from the Balcón de Europa or cooling off in a hidden cove, the town offers a sense of place that is increasingly rare on the Spanish coast. Take your time, wander without a strict agenda, and allow the local atmosphere to guide your journey.
Ultimately, the best attractions in Nerja are not just checkboxes on an itinerary; they are experiences that connect you to the natural beauty and cultural heritage of southern Spain. From the geological wonders below the earth to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean, this destination leaves a lasting impression that draws visitors back year after year.
