12 Best Traditional Restaurants in Ávila

Stepping into Ávila feels like walking through the pages of a medieval history book. The formidable 11th-century walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, encircle a city where Romanesque churches stand beside Renaissance palaces, and the spirit of Saint Teresa seems to linger in every stone alley. Yet, beyond the architectural grandeur, Ávila offers a deeply rooted culinary heritage that remains wonderfully unpretentious and authentic.

The province of Ávila is a land of extremes—harsh, cold winters and scorching summers—which has shaped a cuisine built on sustenance and simplicity. This is the birthplace of the famous Chuletón de Ávila, a massive grilled T-bone steak from the native Avileña-Negra Ibérica cattle, and the proud home of the creamy, textured beans of El Barco. To eat here is to understand the landscape itself.

Unlike the coastal regions of Spain, where seafood dominates, Ávila’s gastronomy is a celebration of the land. Roasts, stews, legumes, and cured meats form the backbone of the menu. The traditional cooking methods, often involving wood-fired ovens and slow simmering, have been preserved through generations, offering a taste that is both rustic and profoundly satisfying.

For the traveler seeking authenticity, navigating the dining scene requires looking beyond the tourist traps near the Cathedral. The true soul of Ávila’s food is found in family-run establishments, some of which have been serving the same recipes for over a century. These are places where the décor is often wood-paneled, the wine list is local, and the portions are generous.

This guide curates the definitive list of the best traditional restaurants in Ávila, ensuring you experience the city like a local. We have prioritized establishments that maintain high standards of quality, source local ingredients, and offer that intangible warmth of Castilian hospitality. Whether you are craving a perfectly seared steak or a hearty bean stew, these venues represent the pinnacle of the region’s culinary identity.

Before we dive into the specific recommendations, it is worth noting that dining times in Ávila, like the rest of Spain, run later than in many other countries. Lunch is typically served from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, and dinner rarely begins before 8:30 PM. Booking ahead is essential, especially on weekends and during the city’s many festivals, as the best tables are claimed quickly by locals and visitors alike.

Below is our carefully selected list of the finest traditional dining experiences the city has to offer, each one a testament to the enduring legacy of Castilian cuisine.

One of the best restaurants I’ve been to recently, the menu is a bit more costly than regular Spanish restaurants (40€) but worth every cent. I had the milhojas de morcilla as a starter and the chuletón as main dish, both absolutely fantastic. Service is also great, very kind staff.
Ed Balint★★★★★
Perhaps the best steak I have had in my life. We ordered the beef ribeye, the filet and the veal steak and shared around the table. Flavor and marbling were exceptional but the sear on the steaks was the most was amazing. Hearing about these world famous steaks and coming from the Midwest of the United States where we pride ourselves in quality steakhouse, I was worried this would be a let down. It exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend.

It is one of the best restaurants we have been in all Spain for sure! Amazing Chuletón de Ávila 😍. The portion is huge for one person, but we managed to finish it all 😋😋😋 If you visit Ávila, this is the must try restaurant, and it's highly recommend Chuletón de Ávila, surtido de Jamón y Queso Ibérico!

We came here believing its rating. Decoration of the place is just normal and there is no even space for waiting until the waiter attenda you. As far as the food, they got daily menu at 38€/pax which is competitive and reasonable. Service was good, we didnt take daily menu and the value for price was ok too. Nice place but the rating is that high coz of the foreigners(they never tried real spanish food before), dont get me wrong, the place is good but not as good like it looks like.
Suthida R★★★★☆
Delicious steak. We ordered each person a menu with the chuleton… and each one was massive. It was delicious and great value for money. They were very generous with the portion. We should have asked about the size, as one to share would have been enough for us two girls. We also ordered one tenderloin which came in much smaller size BUT super soft and tasty. Really really good. My recommendation is if you are into quantity, order the tenderloin!

A good local and nice decorated restaurant just inside the wall by the cathedral. We tried the traditional menu with local bean soup, mashed potatoes with peppers, garlic and pig fats, creamy cold potato salad and the big ox cutlet with mixed salad. Excellent meat perfect medium roasted. Good caraffe of local wine, big bottle of water and fresh bread. Flan and melon as desert. Helpful and polite staff. A good place to eat in Avila.
Samantha Baldini★★★★★
We stopped here for lunch during a quick visit to the city. We chose the menu as we wanted to try a few things. The menu included patatas revolcona, ensaladilla, beans soup and a steak, and a dessert all to share. The soup was very nice and also the potatoes, which I never tried cooked in that way. The meat was very tender and well cooked. The dessert was very good, especially the arroz con leche. The only note would be about the price (58 for 2 people) to be slightly high for the amount of food. Said that, the location is super central so I understand that part of the price is also because of that. It can get very busy so I would recommend to book if you plan to visit. I booked over the phone and the person answering was very nice.

Great location, and given this point the food value is higher. However, I believe it is great value for money. We got the 750g steak dish for 3 people at about 70 euro. The meat was extremely tasty. The dessert was nice, we had the cheesecake and the 3 chocolate cake, but I preferred the cheesecake.

Amazing veal steak. Best in my life, and I have been eatong beef since the Korean War....70+ years ago. Perfect medium rare. Fascinating place. Its walls are part of 900 year old walls of a fotress. Across the street from an elegant cathedral. Fortess walls are complete and stretch for 2.6 km. Great views of Aliva and the surronding valley.
Janine Amodia★★★★★
We had a really nice experience with this restaurant and it’s all kudos to Jony (Jonathan). We decided to spend our last day in Madrid in Avila. We were there from 9:30 to 13:30 so obviously we don’t have that much time to do everything on a relaxed pace. The plan was to just see the walls, visit the cathedral, try the chuleton and roam around. Maybe go to Mirador cuatros potes if we still have time. 12noon came, I saw this restaurant online and since they open at 12, we went inside and asked if there’s reservation needed and they said no. Jony was entertaining us and specifically told him we were in a hurry and we were a little full still as we had just ate in a nearby cafe. He suggested the chicken salad and the chuleton for us to share because the portions are big enough to satisfy us. We asked him for some ‘advice’ on how we go to Mirador given that we only have little time left and oh boy he did not disappoint. He even managed to get us a map, he told us to take a taxi from the restaurant and go to Mirador and ask the driver to wait for us to take a couple of photos and drive us straight to the train station and it was very convenient. Food came and he gave us a broth! It was really good and it was for free!!! We were the very first customer there so everything we ordered came really quick. The chicken salad was SOOOO GOOOD and the serving was big. The chuleton came and although it was good, I felt like I want it to be a little salty. But anyway there’s a little salt on top of it so I kind of spread it a little. We finished everything in 35 mins, paid the bill, left and went straight to the taxi stand that Jony told us to take. Thank you Jony! I have visited Avila a lot of times already and I was just there to tour my friends. I will definitely eat here again and will recommend this to everyone I know that will visit Avila. I did not manage to take proper photos as we were in a hurry.

Lovely small restaurant with delicious food from a menu with a lot of variety. Staff was very helpful and attentive. Setting just outside the town wall is charming. We had a delightful Sunday lunch here.

Just finished a stunning meal here. The highlight was the chocolate tart - although the steak was excellent too! Every dish was beautifully presented, and the staff couldn't be more attentive. An evening well spent. If I had to say something, it's that it would be nice to have a vegetarian option for the main course that isn't meat or fish.

Excellent Spanish cuisine. Authentic and well done. Party of 4 with 2 bottles of wine and water was 124 euros. A very good value.
Detlef Soennichsen★★★★★
A remarkable contrast to the luxury place across the street. Just a few tables, affordable menus, very tasty dishes. A extraordinary friendly service. We are happy to find this place and will keep it in mind on our personal Vuelta across Spain
Clive Searle★★★★★
This place fills up quickly, especially the tiny terraza next to the gate in the city walls, but for good reason. The food is wonderful. An extensive menu is prepared and served beautifully. The cured sadine loins on cucumber carpaccio - a delight. The grilled meats perfect but be warned, the portions are large. Enjoy.

We enjoyed this restaurant very much. A non-Spanish speaking tourist sometimes has a bit of a struggle in Avila, but at the Alcavarea our waitress spoke perfect English and made things very easy for us. The upstairs room was light and elegant, and the food and wine were delicious. What more can I say? (Oh yes: definitely reserve. It's popular.)
Julio Arbelaez★★★★☆
I visit the place in a working meeting Initially, I was looking for Avila’s most famous Chuletón, however I decided to taste the solomillo al humo, which was extremely good, together with a red wine La Hormiga Steak was juicy and tasty, I asked “Al punto menos” For dessert, a cheese cake was sweet and soft. very good experience visiting this place
Simon O Sullivan★★★☆☆
Best dish was the egg, potato and prawns really well crafted, the beans were nice but nothing special. However the steak 750gram chuleton was terrible. Very poor quality it was mostly gristle. Not a place for steak. Service one waiter (tall) was poor, other waiter who wore glasses was much better. A super location but the atmosphere was average
Kurt Nielsen Maldonado★★☆☆☆
Expensive! 10€ for bread, 10€ for water, 10% added to your bill if you eat outside! 18€ for 4 meatballs that were far from gourmet. This is a restaurant that’s a 3 dressed up as a 9. Service was excellent from our server, but 120€ for lunch, I was expecting better food. Who pays for bread with a meal
geraldine cruz★★★★★
We were blown away by the value for money. Everything tasted really good and the price was very reasonable. Their Chuleton would’ve easily fetched £100 in London. It’s probably one of the best steak I’ve ever had and I’m not even big on steaks. Their omelette with crisp Iberico ham was seasoned very well and their vegetable tempura with molasses was such a revelation. I highly recommend this restaurant. Just to add as well, as most restaurants in Avila, they close at 16:00. We arrived 15:15 and stayed until almost 17:00. They even allowed us to have desserts. Oh and just to add to the steak as well, due to the language barrier, they probably didn’t understand that we wanted ours medium well done so they brought it to us medium rare. We had to ask them to cook it a bit more and it was no trouble at all. If anything, it became even juicier. Excellent service. You also feel old world luxury on their setup with their heavy table cloths and starched napkins. All in all, this alone is worth a trip to Avila. Feels like a bonus to see the sights as well.

A really warm welcome upon on our arrival. We had a fantastic experience dining here on Wednesday the 20th of May. Superb service with attention to detail.Mushroom Risotto for starters and the best Chuleton steak(Ribeye) I’ve ever tasted. The brownie for desert was absolutely delicious as well.Even enjoyed the background music thank you so much for a great evening.👏👍🙏🥩🍽️🍷🍾😃
Laurie Halldorson★★★★★
This was the most amazing culinary meal we have had all trip and we have been to 3 different towns so far this trip. This is not to be missed! The flavour combinations are unique but appealing to all tastes, in my opinion. We had the Origen salad, the mushroom risotto, beef cheeks and the brownie and ice cream dessert. All were excellent with beautiful presentations. A word for the owner and tourists…we almost didn’t go because the reservation system showed that you couldn’t make reservations for the same day. We thought that meant the restaurant was full. We walked in and there was not issue at all. It would also be good to have a “open” sign because the frosted glass makes it hard for tourists to know and we don’t want to be awkward. If we were staying another day, I’d be back for both lunch and dinner.

I live in Spain for 2 years and today I had the best croquetas, patatas fritas and ribeye (chuletón)! So glad to discover this restaurant during our trip.

Amazing place, we enjoyed the feudal menu for 2 and had more than enough! The chuletón was one of the best meats I have tasted for quite some time and it was cooked to our exact request. It is worth mentioning they charged 4 euros under the concept child dishes and cutlery which we were not informed of and considered unreasonable. They also charged for bread even if that was included in the menu
F RDO★★★★★
Hadn't had meat like this in my life, pure fantasyland. Menu was plentiful for two, we're still struggling to get off our seat one hour later.
Elena Araujo Borisoff★★☆☆☆
The menu del día is terrible. The salad had dirt in it and the worst disappointment the entrecot which was 50% inedible (tendons and fat) and the rest was flavorless. I ordered it medium and it came out med rare. When I sent it back they burned the outside but the I side was still cool and red. The coulant was microwaved and served in a piece of paler. To make matters worse the server was rude. Absolutely terrible. Do not believe the reviews like I did.

Very nice place with beautiful presentation, especially when it comes to the desserts. A fun and unique detail is that each dessert is accompanied by matching music when served—for example, the tiramisu came with Italian music, which made the experience even more special. Tasty dishes, great presentation, and suitable for larger groups as well. The restaurant was full, so a reservation at least one week in advance is definitely recommended.
Alberto Tureikis★★★★★
Everything perfect from first minute. Excellent Quality, impressive food with sophistication, taste and presentation.. Menu system allows you to taste all courses in a personal manner. Chuleton is fantastic.. Great wine and service.. Book well in advanced otherwise very difficult..
Dear Hu★★★★★
We are so happy that we didn’t miss it. Without a reservation, they gave us 1.5 hrs which was enough. The portion was so generous that we only ordered two main courses and didn’t finish them. The staff who can speak English was very helpful, explaining each dish to us in great details. And the restaurant was so nice that they served one dish in two plates for us. We recommend it to tourists visiting Avila. Try the octopus. I loved it.

The best of the best. I love their desgustcion menu. It is a lot of food for sure but so worth having your stomach exploded because they have such a great food. Highly recommened for special ocasiones

Charming place with delicious, unpretentious food, amazing wines, and excellent service. The best steak I’ve ever had.
Karl Stoppek-Langner★★★★☆
While strolling around Ávila, we found the Vereda just by chance. We selected 5 different dishes from the menu, the first four combining tastes&textures also from local/regional products in an interesting way. For the final course, we had the Ávileña beef which we ordered medium rare (al punto menos). Unfortunately, the meat was heavily undercooked (cold and raw inside), so we had to return it. This was a pity, as the quality of the meat was really good. We did receive a much better second batch, but this incident somewhat saddened the otherwise very positive experience… still, the Vereda surely has potential…

Restaurante El Almacén offers decent food, though we ultimately enjoyed the stunning views of the walled fortress of Ávila more than the culinary experience itself. The restaurant's greatest asset is undoubtedly its location and panoramic vistas. We appreciated the fresh bread and the curry soup they served as an appetizer, which provided a warm, flavorful start to the meal with quality that suggested promise for the courses ahead. The croquettes were decent, meeting basic expectations for this Spanish staple without particular distinction or memorable execution that would elevate them beyond standard preparations. The creamy rice of bacon and vegetables proved just okay, delivering familiar comfort food flavors without the depth or refinement that would make this dish truly special. The chuletón de Ávila presented the meal's biggest disappointment - even when ordered al punto (medium), it arrived too raw for our liking, feeling more like steak tartare than properly cooked beef. This execution issue was particularly frustrating given that Ávila's famous beef should be a restaurant highlight. The torrija de Ávila (similar to French toast) was good, providing a satisfying traditional dessert that ended the meal on a positive note with proper sweetness and texture. Overall, the dining philosophy here seems to be: come for the food, but we stayed for the view.
Deborah Laks★★★★★
Great all-round experience. We had the Chuleton which was soft as butter and a delicious foie salad. Best part was the cook , Isidora, who came to our table and asked if we had liked the experience. I highly recommend the almond coulant for dessert
Philip (Iberian Traveler)★★★★☆
The first steak was still on the cold side when served. The replacement was a little overcooked for being “al punto”.
Jared King★★★★☆
Beautiful restaurant, amazing views, great service, but most of the food was substandard for what you pay for. Very dissapointing. I wouldn't recommend it unless the restaurant explained why there was a drop in quality that day. Side note one dish was very nice it was the beans. They also have an extensive wine list. Again, shame about the food.

If you’re looking for a proper winter meal, this is the place to go. Right by the main wall entrance, Raíces has a cozy and lively air that invites you in. The food is absolutely delicious! We ordered: - The judías del barco con matanza (which was the perfect winter starter. Tasty, warm, and bread-dipping worthy) - Verduras a la parrilla (lovely grilled seasonal veggies) - Huevos rotos (can never go wrong with this dish!) - Two incredible solomillo beef cuts from the famous regional Avileña-Negra Ibérica breed. Mind-blowingly good!!! Everything was paired with a stunning red wine from Burgos. The service was also great. Despite the restaurant being full and us not having a reservation, they were quick to find room for a table for us. If you’re in the area and are looking for a traditional winter meal after a chilly walk around the medieval city walls, you won’t be disappointed! Delicioso!
Sushi Gal★★★★★
Quaint establishment - we ordered avocado salad, foie gras, and a few other dishes. A wide array of highly unique menu items - Each item we ordered was flavorful and well executed. Wait staff was mixed - our server was very helpful but we saw others that were a bit careless. With finer dining, prices were on the higher end but as expected.

A beautiful restaurant that has the city walls as part of it. The Avila grilled veal was so amazing! The fries are so good and flavourful! The best food I've had in Spain so far! Service was superb and friendly.

Must go to restaurant. Literally in the tower of the historical Ávila. We had a warm welcome, wonderful and excellent food. Local products! Javier served us exquisitely. The guest is king/queen and they do their utmost best to be of service. Good atmosphere and nice music. Not too loud.
David Lawley★★★★☆
We ate from the menú del día for 2 people, which included 3 shared starters ( ensalada de ventresca de atún, judías del barco and patatas revolcones), chuletón for main course, tarta de queso for postre, a bottle of wine, a large bottle of water, bread and coffee for 49.50. This is excellent value compared with many of the other restaurants in Ávila. The dishes were well prepared and presented, and tasted good,; although to be crítical, the judías lacked a little flavour and the chuletón was a little fatty. We ate on the terrace outside the restaurant, which provided a nice environment with temperatures of 22 degrees- although there is plenty of indoor space. Service was rapid and polite. Very good value. After eating lunch, we left so full that we did not need to eat until the following day.

A great spot for lunch; they're open through the mid day afternoon, the menu has variety (kid friendly, local cuisine, tapas & meals), and the staff is super friendly (and English speaking!). Juan Carlos is a good cook and a good host!

Perhaps we didn’t order the right things here, but the food was very mediocre and not the tastiest considering what we had to pay. They also added some bogus extra costs to our final bill. Nice location though and service was good too.

Nice staff, has both English and Spanish menus for all tourists. Oxtail was good, the sauce from the dish helps soften the crisp bread that is offered

Amazing Food, highly recommend. Steak was delicious and a big portion, owners have amazing attitude and supper friendly! As a very picky person I found myself spending a wonderful time and being able to enjoy my food without any issues. I highly recommend coming here! 🇺🇸🌎

I loved this place . I was able to park the motorhome across from the walled turrets for 11 Euros er night . Lots to see & do . Fantastic historical sight well preserved with excellent bars & restraunts contained within & around surrounding the walls. Visited twice & I wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Practical Tips for Dining in Ávila

To make the most of your gastronomic journey through this historic city, a little local knowledge goes a long way. The dining culture here is distinct, and understanding the nuances of ordering, timing, and local specialties will elevate your experience from a simple meal to a memorable cultural immersion. Here are some essential strategies to help you navigate the menus and traditions like a seasoned local.

Always order the Chuletón to share.
The famous Ávila steak is enormous and is designed to be shared between two or more people. It is served on a hot stone or cast-iron plate, often still sizzling. Request it "poco hecho" (rare) or "al punto" (medium-rare) to appreciate the quality of the Avileña beef; asking for it well-done is considered sacrilege by local chefs.

Start with the Judías del Barco.
Before the meat arrives, you must try the local white beans from El Barco de Ávila. They are typically stewed slowly with chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and pork ear. The texture is uniquely creamy yet firm, and it serves as the perfect first course to prepare your stomach for the heavy protein to follow.

Don’t skip the Yemas de Santa Teresa.
For dessert, the city’s signature sweet is the "Yema de Santa Teresa," a dense, sugary egg yolk confection created in honor of the saint. While you can buy them in boxes to take home, eating them fresh in a traditional restaurant or pastry shop offers a textural experience that is far superior to the packaged versions.

Embrace the Menú del Día at lunch.
If you are dining on a budget or simply want to experience how locals eat daily, look for the "Menú del Día" during lunchtime. Most traditional restaurants offer a three-course set menu that includes a starter, a main course (often including smaller cuts of local meat or stew), bread, a drink, and dessert for a very reasonable fixed price.

Pair your meal with local wines.
While Rioja often steals the spotlight, the nearby Rueda and Toro denominations offer exceptional value. Ask for a "verdejo" from Rueda if you are having fish or lighter starters, or a robust "tinto de Toro" to stand up to the rich, fatty flavors of the roasted meats and stews.

The true charm of Ávila lies not just in its towering walls but in the warmth of its hospitality and the honesty of its food. A meal here is a slow, unhurried affair, meant to be savored with good company and lively conversation. By venturing into these traditional establishments, you are not just feeding yourself; you are participating in a ritual that has defined this city for centuries.

As you leave the table, full of robust wine and perfectly grilled meat, you will carry with you the taste of Castile. It is a flavor profile that is unapologetically bold and rustic, yet deeply comforting. The restaurants listed above are more than just places to eat; they are the custodians of Ávila’s soul, ensuring that the culinary traditions of this high plateau continue to thrive for generations to come.
