Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Alps, Nice is a culinary crossroads where Provençal traditions meet modern French gastronomy. While the city is famous for its sun-drenched promenades and vibrant markets, its sushi scene has quietly evolved into one of the most dynamic on the Côte d’Azur.
From intimate omakase counters to sleek, minimalist dining rooms, the options for raw fish lovers are both diverse and impressively refined. Finding exceptional sushi in a coastal city known for its Niçoise cuisine might seem counterintuitive, but Nice’s international character has attracted talented chefs from Japan and beyond.
Many of these establishments source their fish directly from the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and even the famed Toyosu Market in Tokyo. The result is a unique blend of local freshness and authentic Japanese technique that satisfies both purists and adventurous diners.
The best sushi experiences in Nice go far beyond standard salmon rolls and California maki. Here, you can discover delicate nigiri brushed with yuzu kosho, sashimi cut from line-caught sea bream, and creative rolls that incorporate Provençal ingredients like basil, lemon confit, and olive oil.
Whether you are looking for a quick lunch near Place Masséna or an elegant dinner after a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, there is a sushi spot tailored to your mood and budget. Because the city attracts so many visitors, it is essential to separate the truly outstanding restaurants from the tourist traps.
A high-quality sushi meal depends on the rice temperature, the sharpness of the knife work, and the chef’s ability to balance flavors without masking the fish. In Nice, a handful of addresses have mastered these details, earning loyal followings among locals and Japanese expatriates alike.
This guide focuses on the places that consistently deliver excellent fish, proper seasoning, and a memorable atmosphere. We have considered not only the quality of the nigiri and maki but also the sourcing practices, service, and overall value. You will find everything from hidden gems in the Old Town to modern addresses near the port and the Carré d’Or.
Whether you are a resident looking to expand your regular rotation or a traveler craving something beyond socca and pissaladière, these recommendations will point you to the finest sushi Nice has to offer. Below, you will find a curated selection of the city’s most reliable and exciting sushi destinations, followed by practical advice for getting the most out of your meal.

We are a group of ladies from an Asian country and travel to japan regularly.
Sorry to say that this jap restaurant didn’t impress.
We ordered
2 appetisers:
- chicken gyoza was ok
- tempura shrimp wasn’t done with the right kind of batter
4 rolls: dragon roll, salmon roll, Futo Maguro roll and soft shell crab roll.
When served, we noticed that seaweed was already damp, not fresh and crisp.
Also, out of 4, 3 types of roll perilla leaves in them. This is not common and it affected the flavour of the rolls.
We have no idea how the high rating came about, but in our humble opinion, the dinner wasn’t worth the price of euros 124 for 3 pax.
Plus, the light soy sauce was disappointing too.
However, the service staff was kind and patient.
Hope the quality can be improved.

Lovely lunch at Onakaya. The highlight for me was the service—the staff are clearly experienced and the Japanese greetings add a beautiful touch of authenticity. I’m rating this a 4 out of 5 because of the tempura; it felt a little heavy and retained too much oil, missing that airy, delicate crunch I was looking for. However, the rest of the Bento sushi set was fresh and high-quality. Definitely worth a visit for the service and sushi alone!

Best Service and Food experience for us in Nice. This was not just a food to enjoy. This was a amazing place with the kindest Service we have every experienced. Not only was the food delicious, it looked amazing and was perfectly served. Thank you. Side Note :" The Limonade and the Tea were amazing too!"

Great location, amazing food, and good service. We’ve tried different dishes and everything was good. The only sushi I didn’t like so much (personal preference) was the one wit the Philadelphia cheese as the quantity used was too much. Other than that all perfect.
Heather S.★★★★☆
I had the California salmon cream cheese roll, veggie gyoza, edamame and mango passion mochi with a yume to drink. The food was good but the service was very very lax. The time it took to get the food was very long and the server was difficult to flag down. For example it took nearly 15 minutes for one order of mochi. Another thing to note - nigiri only comes in orders of 6, which is the first time I've ever seen

Amazing food!!! William was a fantastic waiter! Best service. Great atmosphere. The ramen was so flavorful and the sashimi was incredibly fresh. Definitely visit when in Nice!

Le Yen restaurant in Nice is a new, large Japanese restaurant that I really enjoyed. We have already been here several times.
The interior is spacious, beautiful, and modern, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.
What stands out is the presentation: there is a fire show, and you can actually see the chefs cooking on the open kitchen — it looks very impressive and beautiful.
The sushi, salads, and other dishes are not only beautifully presented but also truly delicious, fresh, and carefully prepared.
The service is very fast and good, and the staff is polite and friendly.
It is definitely worth visiting.

Had a great experience at Le Yen in Nice! I tried a wide variety of Japanese dishes, from savory to sweet, and everything was consistently good. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor across the board. It’s the kind of place where you can explore different options on the menu and not be disappointed. Friendly atmosphere and a solid spot for Japanese food in Nice!

Nothing to say except that it’s a perfect place. Prices are reasonable, food is fresh, and no complaints to the service, which is real friendly. We’ve been there 2 days in a row during lunch on Friday and Saturday, on Saturday had to wait way longer because there were a lot of people, but food was even more fresh. Will definitely come back when I get in Nice again.

Really enjoyed this place! It was my first time trying a conveyor sushi restaurant, and the staff explained the concept clearly when we arrived. The sushi was delicious, there was a great variety, and the whole experience was fun and relaxed.

I’ve traveled the world, grew up in New York, and this is by far the best Pho I’ve ever had. The service is fantastic, and I learned so much about how to mix flavors with sushi and the order in which to maximize the flavors within my dish. What an experience. Never thought I’d come across this in France. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. If I lived close, I’d be coming back every week! Please go!
Olivia Perna★★★★★
Le Carpe Koï was such a lovely little find in Nice and exactly the kind of understated, authentic sushi spot we always hope to stumble upon while traveling. The menu is quite simple and focused mainly around salmon and tuna, but honestly, that focus is what makes the restaurant so good. Rather than trying to do everything, they clearly prioritize the quality of the fish, and it absolutely shows.
The fish was incredibly fresh. I am very picky about seafood freshness and can usually tell immediately when something is off, so I can confidently say the quality here was excellent. The salmon and tuna were beautifully sliced, buttery, and clean tasting with that perfect fresh texture you want from good sushi. The presentation was also gorgeous in a very artistic yet understated way, reminiscent of a traditional Japanese sushi spot where the focus is entirely on craftsmanship rather than flashy gimmicks.
I had the mixed salmon and tuna chirashi, which was absolutely delicious, while my partner ordered a combination of nigiri and California rolls that were equally fantastic. One detail we especially appreciated was that they offered both sweet and salty soy sauce options, allowing you to tailor the flavors to both the fish and your own palate. It was such a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel even more intentional.
The service was very welcoming to us tourists, and the prices were honestly incredible for the quality. We spent around 18€ per person and felt like we got exceptional value for the freshness and care put into the food.
Le Carpe Koï is not flashy, but that is exactly its charm. It is a simple, artistic, high-quality sushi restaurant with fantastic fish, excellent presentation, and very fair prices. We had a wonderful time and would absolutely return the next time we are in Nice.

Nice surprise! We were a bit not sure of this place, but actually it was really good. For 14€ yo can choose a lunch option of 8 pieces and a miso soup, very fresh and simple. The owner is super nice and cooks himself and served everything very fast.
Roxanne Harmer★★★★★
Great sushi and hands-on service by the owner. Very committed chef, very fresh fish. They went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience.
Great outdoor eating area.
Mike Kempster★★★★★
Very enjoyable little restaurant. We went with one of the sushi combo platters and a few extra rolls. Everything was fresh and some of the specialty rolls were excellent and reflected the chefs Vietnamese ancestry.
Service was quick and the outdoor seating was good. Not too busy from the trams and people going by but not quiet
J W★★☆☆☆
The place is very nicely located. Sadly that's where it stops. Fish is low quality, rice is sour and not cooked well. Wasabi is fake (but sometimes restaurants can still be okay despite that) 2/5

This is my second time visiting this restaurant. Service is fantastic - waiters are attentive and patient. Food is top-notch - be it miso soup, sushi, sashimi, dragon rolls, sirloin steak or chicken teriyaki. Price is reasonable especially given the service and food quality. Our best dining experience in Nice.

Overall, I had a good experience at Sushi Arson. We ordered the Saumon Aburis Creamy, Saumon Aburis Bonito Furikaké, Dragon Roll, Thon Spicy Special Mix, Gyoza, and the Poisson poêlé au miso-shoyu(fish with miso soup).
The sushi was excellent. Everything tasted fresh, the fish was of good quality, and the rolls were well made. The aburi selections were especially enjoyable, and the gyoza were a nice addition.
The only dish that felt a bit disappointing was the Fish Platter. Although it came with miso soup and rice, the fish portion itself was quite small for the price.
The biggest downside was the waiting time. It took between 1 and 1.5 hours for all of our food to arrive, which is simply too long, especially when you’re dining in.
Overall, the food quality is definitely there, but improving portion value on some dishes and reducing the waiting time would make the experience much better. I’d still come back for the sushi.

The atmosphere here is absolutely amazing! It feels like you are in real Japan. Everything is beautiful, cozy, and thoughtfully designed.
I really love wine, and the white wine here is delicious — I especially enjoyed it. The food is always tasty. I’ve been coming here since 2022 or 2023, I don’t remember exactly, and I’ve never been disappointed.
Everything is delicious, and it’s not only my opinion — my friends love this place too. A truly beautiful and atmospheric place. I highly recommend it!
Sheikh Zaman★★★★☆
Nice food. The waitresses were very nice and polite but the service was slow. It’s a small business with two people at front of house and one chef. It was worth the wait as the food was tasty. The only thing I would criticise was the soy sauce was not as salty as the usual I’ve had around the world - tasted sweeter than the usual like it was dark soy sauce definitely worth a visit when in Nice
Erin Thomas★★★★★
Most beautiful presentation I have ever seen; clearly a lot of love and thought goes into the dishes. Extremely delicious gluten free items for me as a celiac: the white fish tartare and roll, and the salmon caramel.

Surprised with the high google rating. Nice staff for sure and although very small a cute and nice atmosphere with a casual Asian vibe. The sushi was average along with a few other things we tried. I would still recommend it for the price/value and friendliness but an average foodie taste sushi taste experience for sure.

Great food and even better service. The sweet woman working welcomed us into the restaurant with open arms, even as they were about to close. I highly recommend the innovative sushi push-pop!
Michele Chung★★★☆☆
It’s really overrated and overpriced. The rice is hard and stuck into a ball, no taste of vinegar. The rice is everything and I was disappointed. The staff was super nice and the vibe was great but I do have a higher standard of chirasi (and rice bowl in general).

Delicious! Mean price was 15-20€ per person and it is perfect to share because they really make you feel full. The fillings of sushi dishes are nice and of good quantity. WARNING for INTOLERANTS: the japanese salad (simple coliflour salad) contains mayonnaise sauce. One issue I would say from this restaurant is they DO NOT inform about any allergies nor intolerances in their menu. But the food quality, quantity and service are great. They have typical dishes and desserts like azuki mochi (red bean) so I will come back for sure!

You must try teriyaki 🙋🏻♂️very tasty.
Nems also was fresh and tasty.
We had a small misunderstanding and they brought one additional nem dish and waiter didn't even argue and brought the dish back and didnt charge for it.

Celebrated our wedding anniversary at Kōyō last night, and it could not have been more perfect. Having been to many omakases globally, I was thoroughly impressed by how exceptional and truly original the sushi was. We paired our dinner with a beautifully delicate bottle of junmai daiginjo. The service was top-tier, and the chef was warm and unpretentious. The evening ended with meaningful conversations with both the chef and our fellow guests. We’re already planning to come back on our next trip to the area!

This place is a gem! It's tiny so don't expect a comfy booth! It can seat maybe 7 people total. However, the food and owner absolutely make up for that!!! The food is fresh and so good! The owner is charming and accommodating! He rearranged the seating to fit us more comfortably. And there was air conditioning too!! This wonderful place is a must go!

Absolutely loved this sushi place. We ordered takeaway yesterday, but you can also eat there. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate feel and a really cute atmosphere.
The guy working there was super nice and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The prices are also very convenient, especially considering the quality.
And the sushi was absolutely amazing, fresh, delicious, and full of flavor. Every piece was prepared with care, and it’s the kind of sushi that immediately makes you want to come back.

It is good, best part about here is that it is non-stop. I needed to eat around 3pm and here was one of the only sushi shops open with a little terrace to eat sushi at that time. The people are very friendly. They have a fridge with pre prepared boxes for a speedy run and go, but they will also make you fresh roles for your selection. The prices are very low compared to o there stores but the pieces are slightly smaller. It was a nice experience. Maki roles that I had were 5,50€ each.

It was an absolutely amazing and delicious experience! The service was friendly and inviting while not rushing us to make any decisions. They provided indepth details about every dish that we selected while offering their own recommendations. The sushi was carefully crafted and presented beautifully. Each roll was unforgettable and worth repeating time and time again. I would highly recommend treating yourself to one of their many delicious dishes!

Sushi was expensive, but good. The restaurant had a really pleasant environment inside.
One recommendation to the management:
Do not put Crème Fraîche in the sushi. This is somewhat common in Europe but unknown in any genuine Japanese restaurant.
Also the salmon rolls were mad out of a shredded, canned salmon which was smelly and disgusting, but everything else was very good.

Oceanosa delivers authentic, Japanese-led food at a good price. I say Japanese-led because the inevitable ‘Poké’ bowls have entered the menu (whatever). There’s a great selection of Sushi and some hot dishes too, like Gyoza and Yakatori skewers. We ordered everything to come together - Wakami salad (a delicious, slightly gelatinous seaweed), chicken Gyoza, Yakatori and crevettes. You order from a tablet. Or try too! I ended up ordering from the waitress - call me old fashioned. Anyway, a great meal was had by all. Recommended if you find yourself wanting an hour or two away from the tourist bustle of downtown Nice.
Tips for Choosing Great Sushi in Nice
Before you book a table or walk into the nearest sushi bar, it helps to know what separates a good experience from a great one. Nice has no shortage of Japanese restaurants, but not all of them maintain the same standards. These practical tips will help you order wisely, avoid common disappointments, and appreciate the nuances of sushi made with care and precision.
1). Look for a focused menu rather than an endless list
Restaurants that offer dozens of hot dishes, pizzas, and fusion items alongside sushi often spread their kitchen too thin. The best sushi spots in Nice keep their menus concise, concentrating on a smaller selection of fish that is fresher and handled with more skill.
2). Pay attention to rice temperature and texture
Sushi rice should be served slightly warm or at room temperature, never cold from a refrigerator. The grains should be glossy, lightly seasoned with rice vinegar, and hold together without being dense. If the rice is clumpy or dry, the rest of the meal will suffer regardless of the fish quality.
3). Ask about the daily catch and seasonal specials
Many top sushi chefs in Nice feature fish that arrives that morning, whether it is local Mediterranean tuna, sea bass, or imported Japanese specialties. Asking what is freshest not only leads to a better meal but also signals to the chef that you care about quality.
4). Choose nigiri and sashimi over elaborate rolls if you want to judge authenticity
While creative rolls can be delicious, they often hide inferior fish under heavy sauces and toppings. Order a few pieces of simple nigiri first—such as salmon, sea bream, or tuna—to assess the chef’s fundamentals before exploring more inventive options.
5). Respect the chef’s pacing and omakase etiquette
If you sit at the counter or choose a tasting menu, eat each piece as soon as it is served. Sushi is designed to be enjoyed at the ideal temperature and texture, so waiting too long or taking photos of every piece can compromise the experience. Trust the sequence the chef has chosen.
6). Check for a Japanese or highly trained sushi chef behind the counter
While not a strict requirement, restaurants with Japanese leadership or chefs who trained in Japan often demonstrate a deeper understanding of fish aging, knife techniques, and seasoning. In Nice, several standout addresses are run by Japanese expatriates who bring exacting standards to their craft.
7). Book ahead during summer and weekends
Nice is a busy tourist destination, especially from June through September. The best sushi restaurants are often small and fill up quickly. Reserving a table or counter seat a few days in advance will save you from settling for a mediocre meal.
The beauty of exploring sushi in Nice is that the city’s culinary identity adds a distinct Mediterranean accent to the Japanese tradition. You might find a roll finished with a drop of basil-infused oil or nigiri topped with a sliver of Menton lemon zest. These subtle local touches make the experience feel rooted in the region rather than imported wholesale.
Ultimately, the best sushi meal is one that respects the fish, the rice, and the moment. By choosing restaurants that prioritize freshness and technique, you will discover that Nice holds its own against much larger French cities when it comes to raw fish. Take your time, ask questions, and let the chef guide you through a meal that reflects both Japanese precision and the easy elegance of the Riviera.
