12 Best Cafes in San Sebastián

San Sebastián’s culinary reputation often revolves around pintxos bars and Michelin-starred dining rooms, but its café culture is equally compelling. Tucked between Belle Époque facades, surf shops, and cobblestone lanes in the Old Town, the city’s coffee scene has evolved into a serious daily ritual. Whether you need a quiet spot for remote work or a sunny terrace for people-watching, the choices are remarkably diverse.

The best cafés here balance specialty coffee expertise with Basque warmth. Baristas take their craft seriously, yet the atmosphere rarely feels pretentious. You are just as likely to see a local grandmother ordering a café con leche as a digital nomad sipping a single-origin pour-over. That blend of tradition and modern precision makes San Sebastián a quietly outstanding coffee destination.

Location matters more than you might expect. The city is compact, but the character of each neighborhood changes quickly. Gros feels youthful and surf-oriented, the Centro Romántico offers elegant shopping streets, and the Old Town hums with tourist energy. Choosing a café near your hotel or apartment can shape the rhythm of your entire day.

Beyond the espresso itself, many of these spaces serve exceptional pastries, brunch dishes, and natural wines. Some roast their own beans, while others import from top European roasters like La Cabra or Square Mile. A few have become community hubs for artists, students, and creatives, offering a slower counterpoint to the fast-paced pintxos crawl.

For visitors, understanding local ordering etiquette helps. Coffee is rarely rushed, and table service is common in traditional spots. In specialty cafés, ordering at the bar is normal. Most places now accept cards, though carrying a little cash remains wise in smaller neighborhood bars. Tipping is not expected, but rounding up is appreciated.

San Sebastián’s rainy Atlantic climate makes a warm, well-designed café even more valuable. On drizzly mornings, nothing beats a window seat with a flat white and a buttery croissant. When the sun breaks through, outdoor terraces fill quickly, especially in squares like Plaza de la Constitución or along Zurriola beach.

Below is a curated selection of the city’s strongest coffee experiences, chosen for quality, atmosphere, and consistency.

I was looking for a coffee shop with atmosphere and found it! Right near Buen Pastor Cathedral on the loveliest walking street, sits Old Town Coffee. My flat white was tasty, though small (the to go cup). Even though there are only a few tables outside and inside, there are quite a few benches in front and seating comes open if you’re just grabbing a cup of coffee. If you’re eating and have the time, it’s worth the wait. Everyone’s food near me looked so good. Highly recommend! Hits all the notes of a good coffee shop!
Maria K (mk)★★★★★
Probably the best cappuccino we found in San Sebastián. We tried at least five or six different coffee places during our stay, and this was the one we kept coming back to. The cappuccino may not be 100% exactly how we like it, but it is genuinely good, with a proper balance between coffee and milk. You can actually taste the coffee rather than just getting a cup of warm milk, and it has a pleasant slight acidity. The pastries also look very good and everything we tried was fresh. My only disappointment is the opening hours. They close quite early in the afternoon, which is understandable, but for a coffee shop I would love to have the option of coming back for a cappuccino until at least 5 pm. Still, after trying quite a few places in San Sebastián, this became our reliable cappuccino stop — and the fact that we kept returning probably says it best.

After trying different spots for brunch and coffee in Sebastián and Bilbao the past few days, I can definitely say that this is the best one choice. Really friendly and quick service despite it being very busy, perfect food/prices, awesome flat white. Only let down is the cleanliness of the man’s bathroom which needs a good scrub.
Dave Rogers★★★★★
We found this little gem of a coffee shop only a few blocks away from our hotel. Super clean and comfortable. The personnel were very kind and patient with our Spanglish. We ordered the Americana coffee served hot! Amazing orange juice freshly squeezed, avocado toast w/Iberian ham, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with sesame, fresh sage, lime, and garlic. So flavorful! We also ordered and split a bowl of homemade yogurt buried in sliced bananas, Strawberries, and blue berries. A breakfast worth returning for. We did. Two days in a row. I hate to reveal a prize but we left for home today. Well worth the walk from the downtown area. Get there early as it was packed within ten minutes both days. Only suggestion is to improve the entrance. A bit dark.
Aisling Mulligan★★★★★
Coffee is amazing here and the staff are very nice. However, we waited over 30 minutes for a yoghurt bowl and avocado toast. A little disappointing too because it was just okay, there were shards of salt all over the avocado - not necessary.

A lovely cafe that became our local when in San Sebastián. Excellent food and a selection of pastries. We loved the Turkish Eggs and Eggs Benedict and were lucky to get a Burnt Basque Blue Cheese cheesecake one morning. The staff are fantastic and very helpful for those with terrible Spanish. The food comes out quickly and do not be scared if there is a small line. The tables turn quickly.

A pleasant surprise, there are so many cafes almost anywhere you go how is one more special than the other. Well, Somos pulls it off, the location is on a not too busy street in a very nice neighborhood, plenty of small shops, restaurants, and pleasant park areas nearby. The service is friendly and attentive, the kitchen is fast, and the food and coffee is very good. Came here for breakfast, had the coffee Americano and pancakes, pancakes were light, fluffy, very good tasting, some extra ingredient(s) added to give them something special. Liked everything about this place. Would not hesitate to come here again.

Somos Bakery in San Sebastián is my favourite spot for enjoying a good coffee with a pastry or something from their food menu. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the staff are always friendly, and everything feels fresh and thoughtfully made. It’s also dog friendly, which makes it even better for a relaxed stop any time of day. The Benedict eggs and gildas sandwich are my favourites. LEMON CROISSANT 11/10. Lets not forget the famous burger night 🥹🙌🏻.
James Moss★★★★★
Visited Somos for brunch on Friday last week. Managed to land a seat outside and it’s a beautiful spot, with incredibly accommodating staff. We opted for the eggs Benedict, which was out of this world, and we deeply regret not trying some of the baked goods- which looked exceedingly tasty. Would 100% recommend for a quaint brunch spot whilst in town.

Another fantastic spot in San Sebastian, definitely the best coffee in town...great service and pets friendly. Had a delicious gluten and dairy free pastry. Strongly recommending

This place is cosy and warm on a cold day. It has a nice vibe to it. Sadly the coffee isn’t worth it (boiling hot and the milk Is poorly frothed) and I had to ask the barista to change it and we had to have a disagreement over it. Everyone else was enjoying themselves so maybe my coffee expectations were different to the average customer there. The food looked great.

Koh Tao delivers. Christian pulled one of the best cappuccinos we’ve had in Spain, and the caramel mocha was the finest version of that drink we’ve encountered anywhere. Relaxed space, friendly staff. Don’t skip it.

Rating this as a place to work: music is quiet, there are lots of plugs, and there are maybe 3 tables that are good for laptops. Free Wi-Fi but it wasnt high quality, my internet cut out once. The zumo was awesome, and they serve it in a gigantic cup. Open to the outdoors so lots of fresh air.

We came here and to the smaller one (Simona Obrador) every day of our 4 day holiday to San Sebastian. The coffee is truly delicious and everything we ate was very tasty. It gets very busy for breakfast/brunch but the turnover is quite fast so even though you may need to queue, it shouldn't be too long. We went shortly after opening on our last day and there was hardly anyone there, so if you're an early riser I'd suggest going first thing.
Alexey Subach★★★★★
The cheesecake was outstanding - certainly one of the best ones I’ve tried in my life and the best one I’ve had in San Sebastián. The texture was very silky and smooth and very airy and light at the same time. It was perfectly balanced and was neither overly fatty nor omelette-like. If you are looking for a perfect basque cheesecake then surprisingly this is the place to go to. The flat white was also quite good
Andrey Ugolkov★★★★★
The coffee is excellent, and the food is superb. It appears that entry is primarily for regular patrons, which is often the case with highly regarded establishments. I particularly recommend the kombucha; its quality is exceptional, and I would be delighted to find a similar product in stores. Thank you very much; I anticipate returning here on many future occasions.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Very disappointing experience. The pastrami sandwich was one of the worst I’ve had. The meat was incredibly chewy, overly salty, and lacked the quality and freshness you’d expect. It felt like low-quality ingredients were used, and there was nothing enjoyable about the sandwich. The granola bowl was just as disappointing. It was runny, bland, and had almost no flavor. The ingredients didn’t taste fresh or high quality, and the whole dish felt poorly prepared. To make matters worse, the staff were rude and unwelcoming, leaving a bad impression from start to finish. Overall, a very disappointing experience. With so many excellent cafés in San Sebastián, I wouldn’t recommend this one.
Zeynep Tuğrul★★★★★
The BEST basque cheesecake, forget about La Vina. This was so creamy and delicious! Good coffee too! If you are early easy to find a place, otherwise there was a long queue..

Super!!! We came back three days in a row. Food is freshly made and high quality, very tasty. The two sister- brother remember us right after the first and including our orders, great personality, great humor, very friendly with our daughter, such lovely people and lovely food, can’t compliment them enough!
Juan Carlos Suarez Cabellos★★★★★
Super tasty and great familiar atmosphere. If you order pintxos, probably order 1 per person as that’s enough for breakfast. I have to praise the cleanliness of the place and the politeness of the owners. You may need to wait 5 minutes since the place is small but is not an issue. I’d 100% prefer this place rather to other popular places around!
Johannes Räther★★★★★
Super cute family run business. The owners are a brother and a sister, welcoming you with an open heart. Coffee was good, but the many friendly interactions with locals you can watch make it also a heart warming experience.
Quisha Martin★★★★★
This was the first place I ate when I arrived in San Sebastián, and it was a lovely start to the trip. I had their brioche with marmalade, which was simple but really delicious. I also ordered a sandwich (I think it had tuna) and a coffee, and everything was fresh and satisfying. The café had a cozy, hole-in-the-wall feel that made it seem like a spot locals go to. Most of the customers when I visited were a bit older, which added to the relaxed neighborhood vibe. The staff were very warm and welcoming, and they also spoke English. A really cute and comforting place for breakfast. I’m glad I stopped by.
Rachel A★★★★★
My favorite stop in San Sebastian! Get the toasted brioche with sesame seeds and jam (I got raspberry and marmalade). The jamon iberico tomato avocado toast was also phenomenal! We ordered a second round because it was so good! The owners were so lovely and kind, highly recommend!

Such a great place, fabulous food, great atmosphere, great prices for super fresh made food. Just brilliant, run by a couple who obviously take pride in what they do. The fresh fruit bowl is incredible! Full of a variety of fresh seasonal fruit a must!!!

An absolute hidden gem! They serve the most wonderfully fresh, healthy, and nutritious breakfasts that set you for the day. The food was so exceptional that we couldn't resist coming back twice during our stay. If you're looking for wholesome, delicious morning meals, this place is an absolute must-visit.

This place is wonderful. We've had breakfast for almost a week, and it was consistently great. The menu is varied enough to keep us interested and happy. Everything was delicious, and some combinations were novel and delightful. Service was always prompt and with a smile. My wife is a picky tea lover, and was very happy with the available blends. On my part, coffee was great. It's not a big place so it will normally be full (it was full every time we arrived), but we just needed to wait 2 minutes for a table to become available. I recommend waiting a bit when full.
Alex Papallo★★★★★
Insanely good coffee! Great little bits and pieces to eat. A touch expensive but given the quality it’s not bad. Also amazing service, super friendly especially given how busy they were.

Amazing breakfast. We were so hungry I didn't think to get a picture. But everything was perfectly prepared especially the scrambled egg (huevos revueltos). Exactly the breakfast i wanted. Coffee was great. Do recommend!

Fantastic coffee! I also absolutely loved their tea cups with the little smiley on them. The food was really good. A little bit pricey. The waiters were super friendly and the atmosphere is nice. I also like their music.

We went at around 1PM on a Sunday and we had to wait a bit for a table but we didn’t mind as the staff were so friendly and attentive. It’s not a big place but it’s pretty popular so we understand. They also have outside seating but not the best option if it’s raining. The food we got was delicious. I had the huevos benedictos and it had a hint of spice in it due to the touch of kimchi but as an asian, it just made me like it more. The bread was soft but a bit dry but the sauce definitely makes up for it so I didn’t mind too much. The portion was not big, which is good for me because I don’t eat a lot anyway but other people should probably order other stuff. Since they have pastries, those also look really attractive. The pan de bono looked popular, almost every table had it. The aguacate e idiazabal was also really good. You can taste the quality of the avocado and the cheese goes really well with it. Also not a big portion I would say it was worth trying out. Now, for the coffee which is at the Top 100 Best Coffee here in Spain, I definitely understand why. The presentation and quality of the coffee makes our visit worth it.
Alexey Subach★★★★★
Eggs Benedict were pretty good. They added a bit of chili powder on top which made it a bit spicy. The eggs were made in sous vide so the egg white was quite a bit gooey. They added avocado but it wasn’t overpowering and overall the dish was very well balanced. The cappuccino was pretty good and had lasting honey aftertaste. The staff were good although the service was a bit hectic. Overall this is a solid breakfast place and I gladly recommend it
Sani Ario★★★★★
This is a world class cafe that would do well anywhere in London, Melbourne or New York. Well executed coffee, tight menu, effective staff, good vibes and delicious food. My pancake was perfection in its simplicity. Just a nice, fluffy pancake with the right texture accompanied with sweet maple syrup and the best butter that has ever come out of Spanish cows. The mushroom and eggs on brioche was also a masterclass in letting the produce speak for itself. Loved Driper cafe and wish this can be my local cafe.
Gabriel Alin Seica★★★★★
The brioche bun with bacin and egg was amazing. The chipotle mayo did the magic and I would order 10 of these next time I'm there. Also the loaf with avo, egg and cheese on top was amazing. The coffee was great too. On the darker roastier side but that's how most coffee shops do it in Spain I noticed.

Such a nice cafe. I really liked the garden theme. It felt like having breakfast in your own garden. I had toast with egg, potato, and I think caramelized onion. I was surprised by how well the combination worked. It was really good!! The staff who attended us was very bubbly and accommodating. It’s a lovely place to relax, have breakfast, enjoy some coffee, and just hang out.

I came to Kafe Botanika twice during my stay in Donostia, once for lunch and once for breakfast, and everything was really good both times. At lunch it’s a bit pricey, but for breakfast perfectly good prices for value. I loved the granola and fruit bowl which had a lot of (not quite seasonal) fruit, and the banana bread was also really good. The service was efficient and friendly, and the place is beautiful. The weather wasn’t good enough for the terrace this time, but it is wonderful with all the plants, there were birds in the trees … the food is delicious and it’s really a great place to stop for a while. I will definitely come back whenever I find myself in Donostia again.

The garden and the outdoor seating area were great, but they felt sticky like they weren't cleaned properly. The food was great and we got it super quick. However, the coffee wasn't very good and the chai latte wasn't one. It was british tea with milk with some added spices on top, undrinkable, served with a teabag still in the mug. It tasted like watered-down milk. The bathroom looked like a hospital and the toilet paper wasn't even in a roll, there were only tissiues available. The sangria was fine. For jamón for the eggs you have to pay extra. I recommend the food, but I would skip the drinks.

Lovely restaurant located facing the famous La Concha beach. We had a our breakfast here. Had a coffee with some Spanish Omelette. Loved the dishes. Prices were reasonable even though it was located in a tourist hotspot. Staff speak English. It was easy for us to place the order. Nice place. It was not much crowded and was easy to find a table. Prior reservation is adviced.

Fantastic venue. We ate here on two occasions during our stay in San Sebastián. Both times all staff were attentive, polite and friendly. The quality of the food and value was excellent. We were a party of two older people and two young people in their teens . We all enjoyed the food and the friendly helpful service. We will definitely return when we are next in San Sebastián. There was a great atmosphere with people of all ages having a great time.

I enjoyed this place … I was eating close to the beach and the was really fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is very nice .

Café de la Concha is one of those places you stumble upon and instantly want to return to. The coffee is excellent, and the food is even better. We tried the Tradicional cheesecake, the Lemon sponge cake, and a bikini—all of them were outstanding: soft, fresh, spongy, with just the right amount of sweetness. They were so good we couldn’t resist coming back for this merienda a couple of more times. The staff were warm and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. A heads-up: you pay at the bar near the entrance after your meal, which keeps things relaxed and informal. Add to that the stunning views of Playa de la Concha and the chilled-out atmosphere, and you’ve got the perfect spot for a coffee break (or two). Highly recommend!
Barbara Gulten★★★★☆
Great location if you want to sit on the beach. At times gets super busy so you may not get the seats view a view which is the whole point really. Food is good. Somehow due to location perhaps everything is a bit pricier than other places for the same kind of items. Had a variety of tapas and wines as a big group. Service also gets clogged once it’s busy. We had missing items that never arrived. You will have to catch the waiter and remind them. Lovely setting, was worth trying out.

Tips for Enjoying San Sebastián’s Café Scene

A little local knowledge goes a long way in making your coffee stops more enjoyable, affordable, and authentic. These practical tips will help you navigate the city’s café culture with confidence, whether you are a specialty coffee enthusiast or simply looking for a comfortable place to rest between sightseeing.

Go early or late to avoid the rush. Most cafés fill between 10:00 and 12:00, especially on weekends. Arriving before 9:30 or after 13:30 gives you better seating and faster service.

Learn the basic coffee vocabulary. While many baristas speak English, ordering a “café solo” (espresso), “café con leche” (coffee with milk), or “descafeinado” (decaf) shows respect and often earns warmer service.

Pair coffee with a local pastry. Look for “bollería” (pastries) made with Basque butter, or try a “pantxineta,” a local almond custard puff pastry that pairs beautifully with a cortado.

Ask about the house roast. Specialty cafés often rotate single-origin beans. Asking what is currently on offer can lead to a more personalized recommendation and a better cup.

Check opening days carefully. Many quality cafés close on Mondays or Tuesdays, especially in the Old Town and Gros. A quick look at their social media or Google profile saves a wasted walk.

Sit at the bar for faster service. In traditional Spanish cafés, table service can be leisurely. If you are short on time, ordering and drinking at the bar is perfectly acceptable and often cheaper.

Bring a reusable cup for takeaway. While not universal, several specialty spots offer a small discount if you bring your own cup. It is a small way to reduce waste while exploring.

San Sebastián rewards those who slow down enough to notice the details. A good café here is not just a caffeine stop; it is a window into the city’s rhythm, a place where surfers, chefs, and retirees share the same counter. Let the coffee culture become part of your travel memory, not just a fuel break between attractions.

Whether you spend a rainy morning journaling in a Gros specialty bar or grab a quick espresso standing at an Old Town counter, these spaces offer a genuine slice of daily life. Take your time, try something new, and let the city’s understated coffee excellence surprise you.
