The ritual of hopping from bar to bar in search of the perfect bite is not just a way to eat in San Sebastián; it is a cultural cornerstone. Known locally as the pintxo pote or simply txikiteo, this tradition transforms the city’s old town into a sprawling, open-air gastronomic theater. Here, the display cases are not made of glass and mahogany but of glistening ingredients stacked high on bread, held together by skewers, or piled into delicate pastry shells.
San Sebastián, or Donostia in Basque, consistently ranks among the world’s greatest food cities, and its pintxos are the primary reason why. Unlike the standard tapas found elsewhere in Spain, the pintxos here are often miniature works of culinary art. From the simplest Gilda—a skewer of olive, anchovy, and guindilla pepper—to elaborate foie gras preparations and molecular gastronomy experiments, the variety is staggering and the quality is uncompromising.
The geography of the city plays a crucial role in this excellence. Nestled between the Bay of Biscay and the lush Basque hills, San Sebastián has immediate access to pristine seafood, wild mushrooms, and heirloom vegetables. The chefs here, many of whom train in the city’s Michelin-starred kitchens before returning to family-run bars, treat the local produce with a reverence that elevates a simple bar snack to haute cuisine.
Navigating the Parte Vieja (Old Town) can be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. The narrow, cobbled streets are packed with establishments, each claiming to have the signature dish you simply cannot miss. While spontaneity is part of the fun, knowing which bars are truly exceptional—rather than simply tourist traps—is the key to a memorable experience. This guide cuts through the noise to highlight the essential stops.
It is important to understand the etiquette before you go. The best strategy is to visit one or two bars at a time, order a drink, select two or three pintxos, and then move on to the next location. While some pintxos are served cold from the bar top, the true magic often lies in the hot items listed on chalkboards behind the counter, which are prepared a la minute to ensure the perfect texture and temperature.
San Sebastián is a city that respects tradition while embracing innovation. You will find century-old bars standing next to modern gastropubs, both serving food that defies expectations. The common thread is a deep-seated obsession with raw materials. Whether you are eating a simple anchovy or a complex creation, the star of the show is always the ingredient itself.
To help you experience the very best of this culinary paradise, we have compiled a curated list of the essential stops. These are the places where locals crowd the bars, where the griddles never stop sizzling, and where the history of Basque cuisine is written one skewer at a time.

Some places are worth standing in line for, and Bar Txepetxa is definitely one of them.
We arrived to find a queue out the door, but it moved surprisingly fast. Once inside, we squeezed into the crowded bar, ordered a few drinks, and started pointing at all the anchovy pintxos we wanted to try. It turned into one of our favorite food experiences in San Sebastián.
Even if you think anchovies aren’t your thing, give them a chance here. They’re incredibly fresh, mild, and buttery, nothing like the salty anchovies many people are used to. Every bite was beautifully balanced.
Our standout favorites were the anchovy with trout roe, which added a wonderful pop of texture, and the anchovy with jardinera, where the crisp peppers and onions brought a bright, tangy contrast. The spider crab cream version was also rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious.
The atmosphere is lively and authentic, with everyone standing shoulder to shoulder, chatting, eating, and enjoying the moment. It’s exactly the kind of traditional pintxos bar you hope to find in the Old Town.
If you’re planning a pintxos crawl in San Sebastián, put Bar Txepetxa near the top of your list. It has earned its reputation, and I’d happily wait in line all over again just for those anchovy pintxos.

Very busy and popular spot. They are famous for their anchovy pintxos. I tried the Jardinera (with peppers) and Olive (with olive paste). Both were truly delicious.
It is hard to find a table or somewhere to let your plate. I would say just a spot to pass by and eat your pintxo. But it was so delicious that I would come back anytime again.

During our 3-night stay in San Sebastián, we visited this place three times — that says everything about how much we enjoyed it.
All the pintxos we tried were delicious, but the fried calamari was especially outstanding. It was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had: crispy, fresh, and absolutely memorable.
What I want to highlight most, however, is the service. We don’t speak Spanish or Basque, but we tried ordering in Basque for the first time. Even though our pronunciation and sentences were awkward, the staff were incredibly kind and patient. They really tried to understand us and made sure we felt comfortable as tourists.
We truly appreciated how welcoming and considerate they were. Their warm service made the experience even more special.
A funny coincidence: a local elderly lady we met during our trip recommended a cheap and delicious pintxos place — and it turned out to be this exact place. Now we completely understand why locals love it too.
Great food, reasonable prices, and genuinely wonderful service. This became one of our best memories in San Sebastián. I would definitely come back. Thank you!

Our first stop in San Sebastián and what a way to start. We are big fans of fresh anchovies so this felt like the obvious choice — and it absolutely delivered.
Being new to the pintxos experience we panicked and rushed rather than properly leaning into the buzzy, bustling atmosphere. This led to a mix-up — my wife misheard me and we ended up with the anchovy with olive rather than the blueberry. Lesson learned!
No matter, because we had started with the anchovy with crab which was simply outstanding, and the olive version was delicious in its own right, if perhaps slightly on the savoury side.
We washed it all down with the traditional Basque txakoli — fizzy, crisp and the perfect accompaniment.
The good news? We righted the wrong by returning the next day for the blueberry anchovy — the combination of sweetness and saltiness was a complete knockout.
An absolute must when visiting San Sebastián. Also embrace the chaos and don’t start too hungry!!

Every anchovy laden piece of bread was sensational. The one with the fish roe was so good and the blueberry one was surprisingly delicious. Also the fried squid was so good. We had to go back a second night.

Believe all the hype!
We had to wait in line, but it went quickly. While we were waiting we were able to look at the menu. You can find a QR code on top of one of the napkin holders outside. Once you placed the order, the food comes out relatively quickly.
We tried the veal cheek in red wine, pig ear, tomato, ribs and everything was INCREDIBLE. They served the dishes with really good bread that you can use to soak up all the sauces. We had beer and wine.
So many dishes came out that we did not order that looked absolutely delicious.
We found seating at the end of the bar in the back, a lot of people stand up front, but if you walk towards the back there’s room. That being said it is a cozy place.
The restaurant is a well oiled machine. Thank you chef and staff!!
Phuong Tran★★★★★
Love the pig ears, both the seasoning and the texture. Beef cheek is also my favorite, it is so tendor and the tomato sauce surprisingly a very good combination. Pork ribs is also nice but it does not wow me like the other two.
Jessica Ngu★★★★★
Chaos! Servers were like experienced stock brokers on wall street calling out orders, remembering who ordered what, billing. My 3rd time here. Food was amazing- pork ribs, langoustine ravioli, entrecôte, risoni, pigs ear. Gota have it all. Lined up from before they even opened to guarantee a spot at the bar
Irina D★★★★★
Amazing pinxos. I loved the beef cheeks and the green beans with mushrooms. The pig ears were interesting to try but too fatty for me so not my favorite. It gets quite busy but the staff are very efficient.
L Shane F★★★☆☆
Service was unenthusiastic and that says a lot for us living in Spain - let’s just say, you’ll find friendlier, more local, fun and engaging service round the corner.
If you must try this place, go for the Risotto & Pig’s ear (Oreja).
Order straight up at the bar (doesn’t matter if you have a table/ space). Pay upon ordering.

★★★★★ BAR GORRITI – A Perfect Introduction to San Sebastián’s Pintxos Culture
BAR GORRITI was one of my first food stops in San Sebastián, and it turned out to be a wonderful introduction to the city’s famous pintxos culture.
I first visited during a morning walk and was surprised by how calm and relaxed the atmosphere was. However, when I passed by again later in the evening, the place was absolutely packed with locals and visitors alike. Seeing such a difference between morning and evening made me realize just how popular this bar is.
One of the most memorable parts of the experience was the gentleman working behind the counter. He has a strong, traditional presence and a serious expression at first glance, but once you interact with him, you quickly discover a warm and friendly personality. He is exactly the kind of character who gives a place its unique charm and authenticity.
As for the food, this was actually my very first meal after arriving in San Sebastián, which may have made the experience even more special. The pintxos were delicious, fresh, and beautifully representative of the region’s culinary culture.
That said, after spending time walking around the city, I quickly realized that San Sebastián is filled with countless excellent pintxos bars. There are so many great options that it would honestly be difficult for me to name a single “best” one. Each place seems to have its own specialties, atmosphere, and loyal following.
What I will remember most from BAR GORRITI, however, is the simple pleasure of enjoying freshly prepared pintxos with a glass of chilled Cava in the morning. There was something wonderfully relaxing about starting the day that way while taking in the atmosphere of San Sebastián.
If you are visiting the city and want to experience a traditional local bar with character, friendly service, and delicious pintxos, BAR GORRITI is definitely worth a stop. Whether you visit during a quiet morning or a lively evening rush, it offers a genuine taste of San Sebastián. 🥂🇪🇸✨

Love Gorriti Taberna. Visited over Easter.
Came here for breakfast and had the warm egg omelette and Jamon in a roll - it was utterly delicious! The eggs are good quality and it was still warm!
Their pintxos were fresh and they have a high turnover of food meaning food is fresh and replenished often.
Great service, busy place used by locals.

Great bar with quick service and a clean atmosphere. I don’t usually eat fish, but the dish was good and fresh. There are various selections to choose from, and the prices are affordable. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a great place for tapas bar in old town. The food quality is excellent. We also ordered vermouth and beer. Must try while in San sebastian.
Marcado★★★★☆
Though it’s located in the center of the old town, it seemed like local people came visit and got pintxos and drinks. Gilda with octopus was amazing. Simple ingredients taste that good, which was impressive. It was easy to find a place to drink at 6 pm in the low season.

Bar Bergara is an essential stop in Gros for anyone wanting to experience creative Basque pintxos. It's easy to see why it's so highly regarded.
We tried the Risotto, a wonderfully creamy mushroom risotto topped with fresh foie gras, which was rich, indulgent and beautifully balanced. The Itxaso was equally impressive, combining monkfish and prawns with a delicate cream of leeks and local Txakoli wine sauce. Both pintxos were outstanding and showcased the creativity that has made Bergara famous.
To drink, we paired everything with a glass of local Txakoli, the lightly sparkling Basque white wine, which complemented the seafood and foie perfectly.
The service was warm, friendly and knowledgeable, happily helping us choose both the food and wine. If you're looking for inventive pintxos beyond the classics, Bar Bergara is an absolute must-visit in San Sebastián.
Carolien Coenen★★★★★
This lovely pintxos place is mentioned in the Michelin gids and rightly so. The pintxos are really outstanding. We loved this bar so much that we returned for a second visit. There are lots of different warm and cold pintxos to choose from. We tried as many as possible and everything was truly excellent. Especially with a nice glas of wine. We also really appreciated the ice cream on the house.
The service is friendly and efficient. They need to be fast and efficient, because this place is very popular and can get very busy. I definitely would recommend making a reservation before your visit.
Well worth a visit.

We really enjoyed our meal! The Pintxos were great. We had the monkfish, baby squid, fideua, and foie gras which were all quite good. The service was excellent! We look forward to coming back soon!

We walked over from the old town to here, great selection of Pintxos, it's very local as all the tourist focus on the old town.
The anchovy omelette was good, we probably had more Pintxos here in one sitting than anywhere else. Great service too
Lada Giniyatova★★★★★
We loved this place so much that we canceled a paid reservation elsewhere just to stay longer. They don’t offer pintxo-pote, instead, you’ll find incredibly fresh pintxos and a great selection of wines and vermouths!

We hadn't made a reservation but managed to get a table no problem going for a late lunch (around 4pm). I would highly recommend this place - the service was great and all the food was very tasty. Don't miss the beef cheeks!

I had a wonderful time here. The grilled octopus, beef cheek, and foie gras were all absolutely delicious! I also tried the risotto—it was actually made with rice-shaped pasta instead of real rice, which surprised me, but the flavor was still great. Even though the bar was packed, the staff were incredibly kind and efficient. Highly recommend!

Awesome restaurant run by Hotel Atari.
A variety of delicious pinxtos are available.
Check out their great menu of Basque and other dishes.
We had the beef cheek served with mashed potatoes. The beef cheek is slow cooked for six hours and is so incredibly tender and delicious. The gravy is perfect.
We also had the mixed croquettes (ham and fish). Perfectly cooked crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

Everything we tried was excellent, especially the incredibly tender beef cheeks with mashed potatoes.
Delicious food and a fantastic location overlooking the church.
Booking ahead is highly recommended, as tables fill up quickly and otherwise you may face a long wait.
Absolutely worth a visit.

Good tapas but was a bit long wait. And we liked prawns. You can take the food and sit next to the basilica. Very cute experience. Lady at the bar was super polite!

Orginal and extraordinary restaurant. You can try local food. In my opiniom the pork belly were the best. Antricote was ok. The pig's ear is very specific, not something I will try again. The veggies delicates and fresh. Nice and friendly staff. Inside the restaurant there is interesting local climate, the staff call you by the name to także dishes. In addition you can order small portion to try more meals.

The meal I had here was definitely the best I had in San Sebastián.
We heard about the line and arrived early before the evening service started to get a table. Our server was super friendly and made sure we had all the drinks and food we wanted, service was quick and responsive throughout the meal.
The food itself was truly outstanding, despite all of the items we ordered being quite rich the sauces that came with them created a really balanced eating experience.
I would place La Cuchara de San Telmo high on your list of restaurants while in San Sebastián.
Also don’t miss the San Telmo museum located right next to the restaurant so you can see the beautiful tapestries in the old church you’ll be eating adjacent to.

Best restaurant in the whole of San Sebastián ! Excellent food, service, vibes all round!
All the food was spectacular. The pork belly was probably the best I’ve ever had. Highly recommend the beef cheek, beef entrecôte (steak), cod cheeks, octopus. Wines paired perfectly with food.
Service with a smile from all of the Front and back of house staff. Food was fresh and served incredibly quickly, queue moves quickly. Staff know what they are doing despite how busy and chaotic it seems !
Small restaurant mainly with standing counters inside. About 3 tables outside with seats. Vibe is lively, noisy, chaotic but fun.
Prices very reasonable with option to order small, medium or large size. We ordered small size for everything so we could try more dishes.
Marie-Eve Giguère★★★★☆
La Cuchara de San Telmo is a true San Sebastián institution and easily one of the most intense pintxos experiences we had.
•
It was extremely busy, with a constant line outside and the bar area tightly packed. We managed to squeeze in and grab a small space at the counter, which already felt like an achievement. Even the staff told us it was a quiet moment compared to their usual rush, which says a lot about how popular this place is.
•
The setup is very much organised chaos in the best possible way. There are only a few tables, and they are hard to get, so most people stand tightly packed at the bar while food is prepared and served at speed. Despite the pressure, everything runs with impressive efficiency.
•
We were lucky enough to try both the crispy suckling pig and their famous beef cheeks, just as they were running out. The beef cheeks were absolutely outstanding, rich, tender, and full of flavour. The crispy suckling pig was also excellent, perfectly textured and full of depth, adding another standout dish to the experience.
•
What stood out most is how the team manages such a fast, high-pressure environment with calm precision. It is hectic, but it works, and the food is genuinely amazing.
•
Definitely worth the effort and the wait.
Jacek Lasota★★★★★
It is a really great place to eat great food. It is delicious, the meats are tender and cooked to perfection. If you want to have a seat at the tables outside you have to order bigger portions and you have to wait. If you want to eat some pinchos and have quick bite or drink you can do it inside. This plqce can be busy.

We had the most amazing pintxos, incredibly lovely staff (spoke English, kind, patient, great service). Delicious food, and more chill atmosphere than Bar Sport, Nestor etc with incredible food and easy to get a seat. Outstanding tuna, hake, spider crab croquettes, fresh & delish tomato salad ofc Txakoli wine! Cannot recommend enough and there’s seating at the bar / counter and some tables. Also love that there’s 1/2 potions and Pintxos (tapas) sizes, everyone should be coming here!
Klaus Delueg★★★★☆
KBZÓN TXIKI gets very close to five stars. The food certainly does.
This is the smaller sibling of the KBZÓN family in San Sebastián, and the idea is clear: take the pintxo tradition seriously, then push it a little further. Excellent ingredients, very precise combinations, beautiful presentation and enough creativity to make each plate interesting without turning dinner into some laboratory demonstration. A surprisingly difficult balance.
Taste and presentation are first class, and the setting fits the concept very well. Prices are not low, but considering the quality of the ingredients and the work on the plate, I found them entirely reasonable.
So why only four stars?
Because at this level, food is only part of the equation. The enthusiasm and pleasure of working there should somehow travel the last two metres from the kitchen to the guest. During our visit, that didn’t happen consistently. Nothing seriously wrong, just a certain lack of warmth and energy at times.
A pity, because the kitchen is easily playing in five-star territory. With a little more visible enthusiasm from the team, the fifth star would have been an easy one.
Jelte de Boer★★★★★
Fantastic food for a very decent price for the quality food that you receive. Our favourites were the Beef cheek, confit duck and the octopus. The flavour combinations are on a high level and excellent quality. We were only in the city for a few hours and were pleasantly surprised to have some pintxos here.

My husband's favorite was the garlique fish, (bacalao). Perfectly seasoned and buttery.
This definitely will be our first stop in San Sebastian.

We had a quick stop in our pincho crawler in San Sebastian and the two pinchos we had were amazing. Creative! Not the usual anchovy on a piece of bread.

I highly recommend if you want to try a creative type of pincho!

We arrived almost on the nose at 12:00 noon when they open and the queue was still long enough to go around the street corner. And unfortunately we missed out their signature tortilla.
However, the rest of the food were still amazing.
The Igueldo was heavily recommended. It’s pintxos assembled with bread, tomato, anchovies, tuna belly and shallots. It’s a simple combination but gives very rich flavour and texture. The highlight is the thna belly in the middle, which absorbs the saltiness, the sweetness, the freshness and the sour flavouring, and puts it altogether. It’s the perfect appetiser for what comes next.
The prawn ravioli was super creamy and definitely worth recommending. It tastes like a wonton, with the texture of the prawn almost hidden like a surprise inside the ravioli, awaiting your bite to awe you.
Finally, the crispy oxtail was our favourite. A layer of crispiness on the outside, folded over the perfectly braised soft shredded oxtail on the inside.
It was a sublime experience and well worth our hour-long wait.
Mincesherly★★★☆☆
Tortilla is ultimately a matter of personal taste, and while I can understand why Bar Antonio’s version has become so well known, for me it didn’t quite live up to the hype. It’s certainly distinctive, and I appreciate that they’ve created something with its own character and style. That said, being different doesn’t necessarily make it the best, and I personally enjoyed other tortillas in San Sebastián more. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high, but after queuing for around 45 minutes, I came away a little disappointed. Still, it’s definitely worth trying and deciding for yourself.

If there would be 10 stars, I would give them all! Such a superb, pure and fast-paced place. It is always busy but please give it a wait as it is so worth it! Martin & all staff were so friendly & helpful. We usually snack & go but we made an exception & stayed longer because staff & dishes were delicious. Must try the well known tortilla (be there from 6.15. If there is a queue you can have drinks as you wait. The new dish , meatball is definitely worth a try!

Crossing the bridge to the more local pintxos street, we sought out this little gem around the corner from the surfers beach.
A lovely, quieter spot away from ‘the madding crowd’, with good outdoor seating that made for a welcome change of pace.
We worked our way through three pintxos: the sardines, which were beautifully fresh and packed with flavour; the ibérico ham, which was outstanding — rich, complex and with a real depth of flavour; and the cod, which arrived heavily smothered in mayonnaise based sauce. Once scraped clean, however, the cod itself was beautifully cooked — so not a disaster, just a slightly unnecessary disguise for what was clearly a quality ingredient.
A great find, and well worth the short walk across the bridge.

Bodega Donostiarra is another fantastic pintxos bar in Gros and a brilliant place to experience traditional Basque flavours done exceptionally well. The bar has a lively local atmosphere and it's easy to understand why it's a favourite with both locals and visitors.
We sampled three of their signature pintxos. The stuffed piquillo pepper was the standout—sweet roasted pepper filled with a rich, creamy seafood filling, perfectly balanced and packed with flavour. The anchovy omelette pintxo was wonderfully simple but executed flawlessly, with fluffy egg and high-quality Cantabrian anchovies providing just the right amount of saltiness. We also had the grilled octopus tentacle, which was beautifully tender with a light char from the grill, finished simply to let the freshness of the seafood shine.
The service was efficient and friendly despite the busy atmosphere, and the staff were happy to help with recommendations.
If you're exploring the Gros neighbourhood, Bodega Donostiarra is well worth a visit. The quality of the ingredients, authentic Basque recipes and relaxed local feel make it one of the area's standout pintxos bars.

Very nice. They serve the pintxos with bread separately. Always busy but always got a space at the counter. Nice tomato complete salad with tuna and onions. REALLY good creamy cheese cake - different from the others. Good portions.

Horrible experience. Food had no flavour. Servie on the outside was more than poor. A couple that sat next to us got up and left after they didn't even ask them for drinks after 20 minutes. Over priced especially for the outside service which is a 9% surcharge. The waiters don't even look at you especially if you are American as was the couple sitting next to us, but not only americans. Even the potatoes under the octopus had no flavour nor salt. Make a better choice. The sparkling water was good after I had to ask for a glass. I was told the wait was to be 30/40 minutes and they gave me a beeper. After 5/10 minutes in rang, but than sat for 20/40 minutes without being acknowledged after we were seated.

We ordered the pepper with oxtail, callos, gilda, and grilled chorizo. We loved everything but most especially the pepper with oxtail. It melts in your mouth. Must try!

So worth the long wait! You have to line up before opening to get a dinner reservation for that night. We had to wait for over 30 mins to come back for a 10pm dinner spot. We got the classic tomatoes, peppers, and stake and it was an amazing experience!
Eric Y★★★☆☆
I arrived at 5:20pm and was second in line for the dinner service. Based on what I read online, I thought they’d hand out reservations around 6-6:30. They didn’t, so everybody in line waited until they opened a little after 7:30.
We got their tortilla, which was definitely good, but not on its own worth the wait. The tomatoes and peppers were also good. The centrepiece of the meal, the steak, was cooked perfectly rare, but it was far from the melt in the mouth texture that I read about. It was a fine steak, but on par with other steakhouses in Europe and North America I’ve visited.
The bill was €90, including a beer, glass of wine, glass of cava and bottle of water.
Bottom line: good meal, worth the price, but not worth the wait.

Absolutely fantastic experience at Bar Néstor. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from the moment we arrived.
The highlight was the chuletón — perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and full of flavor. You can really taste the quality of the meat and the care that goes into preparing it. Simple, authentic food done exceptionally well.
Between the amazing service, great atmosphere, and unforgettable chuletón, Bar Néstor is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back!

Bar Néstor is one of the true legends of San Sebastián. The quality of the ingredients is exceptional, and the philosophy is simple: use the best products and cook them perfectly. The txuleta is outstanding—beautifully charred on the outside, tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The tomato salad is one of the freshest and most memorable I’ve ever had, proving that great ingredients don’t need complicated preparation.
The atmosphere is authentic, lively, and unmistakably Basque. It’s busy for a reason, so arriving early is worth it. If you’re lucky enough to get a slice of their famous tortilla, don’t miss it.
A must-visit for anyone who appreciates honest cooking, premium ingredients, and one of the best traditional food experiences in San Sebastián.

Everything is 10/10. Order everything on the menu (steak, tomato salad, peppers, and tortilla if you're early enough). Steak is easily top 3 I've ever eaten. Worth the money and the wait (wait to get a reservation before they open)

The tapas were good, and one of the only places I've experienced that warms up their food after you pick the ones you want. They also sauce everything up so if you're allergic or are sensitive to sauces say something. Enjoy!

What a local gem!!! You won't find this place in the over hyped tourist area of old town, rather a 15 min walk where the locals eat, and the pinxtos were some of the best in San Sebastian. Not to mention their basque cheesecake rivaled, if not surpased the well known cheesecake at La Vina, but without the long que. Jose and Ainhoa, a married couple who own and run this pinxtos bar, greet you as if they were welcoming you into their home. You can feel the love and care they put into all the food they make. We went multiple nights because the food kept us coming back. Jose works the front of the bar and Ainhoa does the cooking. The sangria, roasted spider crab on a crostini, spicy chorizo, fried anchovies with a delicatable sauce, and their take on chicken cordon bleu pinxtos were the standouts! Don't forget their creamy basque cheesecake to finish. Bring cash as it is as a CASH ONLY spot. I promise, you won't leave disappointed, only dreaming to return.

A local place away from the touristic old town but worth the trek.
I visited late on a Wednesday as it was near my hotel and the place was almost closing but the owner and lady (partner?) in the kitchen were still able to accommodate me.
The food was delicious, my favourite being the ham hock and mashed potato pictured.
It is a local place and I got by with my basic Spanish but approach with this in mind and you'll enjoy the food which offers a different array to the places in the old town.
As others mentioned, the place only accepts cash but there is an ATM 2 minutes away.

The best pintxos I had in San Sebastian. They’re made fresh on the spot, so they’re always delicious and full of flavor. There’s a wide selection of both hot and cold pintxos. Great local wine and very reasonable prices.

A lucky find as we arrived in Donostia turned into the best place we ate at and we even returned the same day.
Really great selection of pintxos that kept growing even as we were there. Almost all involved an extra magic touch in the kitchen after your selected them and they came out shining. Having tried 6 or 7 different ones, my favorites were the shrimp and bacon fried brocheta and the mash potatoes/roast jamon plate. This will be a must whenever I make the difficult trek back to Donostia, as I sadly didn't have enough room in my stomach to try the tarta de queso before my bus.

To my fellow celiacs : this place is a true haven. It’s one of those rare restaurants where you immediately feel safe. The team is knowledgeable about celiac disease, takes cross-contamination seriously, has proper protocols in place and a lot of gluten free options.
I can’t speak for the tapas menu, as I only had lunch in the restaurant area, but everything I had was absolutely delicious. Beyond the food, the whole experience was wonderful.
If you’re looking for a place where you can truly relax and enjoy an incredible meal without worrying, I couldn’t recommend it more.

An Absolute Must-Visit: Outstanding Food and Authentic Atmosphere!
If you are looking for an authentic and unforgettable culinary experience, this place is an absolute gem. Walking inside, you are immediately immersed in a classic tavern atmosphere, complete with an impressive selection of wines on the menu board and whole legs of cured jamón hanging directly from the ceiling above the bustling bar.
A Quick Tip: Be prepared for a bit of a wait and make sure to arm yourself with patience, as it draws a massive crowd of people! However, they do have a lot of tables outside, providing a fantastic spot to enjoy your meal al fresco once you get seated.
The Culinary Highlights
The food here is worth every second of the wait. Here is a breakdown of our incredible meal:
The Foie Gras: The foie gras is absolutely excellent. It comes perfectly seared with a dark, rich glaze and a sprinkle of coarse sea salt, served elegantly on a rustic slice of toasted bread. It simply melts in your mouth!
Traditional Octopus: The octopus is exceptionally delicious and prepared perfectly according to a traditional recipe. It is served beautifully on a classic wooden board, sliced into tender medallions, and generously dressed with rich olive oil and vibrant paprika.
Stuffed Sea Urchin: A visually stunning and rich dish, the sea urchin is served directly in its spiky shell and beautifully topped with a dollop of bright roe.
Blistered Peppers: We enjoyed a massive, sharing-sized platter of vibrant green peppers, perfectly blistered and seasoned with a generous handful of coarse salt.
Steak Skewer: For meat lovers, the thick chunks of juicy, perfectly cooked beef on a skewer, served alongside a portion of golden, thick-cut french fries, are incredibly satisfying.
Final Thoughts
Yes, the venue is packed, and you will certainly need a little patience to grab a table or navigate the crowds at the bar, but the high quality of the food makes it entirely worth it. Between the lively atmosphere and the masterfully prepared traditional dishes, this is a definitive five-star experience!

Amazing pinxtos experience, easily the best bite here is the solomillo! Our group also had the croquettas de jamon and the baked cod pinxtos. The bartender was awesome and managed a huge group with ease! We came back for bites multiple times through out the day! Even the kids loved it! 10/10 recommend!

A crazy busy place with outstanding food. It was packed, people were cutting, we had to battle our way to the bar to order. I needed to try the zamburinas and my wife wanted "the other sea urchin soup". Outstanding food. Really tight dining, however this was the only place out of the 4 we ate at where we could find wall space inside to eat. Highly recommend for the food!

We had an absolutely incredible dining experience here! Every single dish we ordered was bursting with flavor and beautifully prepared.
The beef tartar (off-menu special) was incredibly fresh and savory—so well-balanced that you don't even feel like you're eating raw meat. The duck foie gras (Medallón de Foie de Pato) paired with apple was a masterclass in flavor; the apple perfectly cut through the richness, leaving nothing but a melt-in-your-mouth satisfaction. The confit cod (Bacalao confitado) paired with avocado was equally divine and literally dissolved in the mouth. We also loved the salmon tartar, the crispy shrimp tortillita, and the seasonal off-menu white asparagus. Truly, everything was delicious!
To top it all off, the service was fast and efficient. A special shoutout to our wonderful waitress Lucia, who was incredibly friendly, warm, and patient with us as we ordered. Highly recommend this gem if you are looking for amazing food and hospitality! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Incredible food, incredible atmosphere, and incredible staff! What a find! We went here on the strength of previous reviews on our first night in San Sebastian. We WILL be back during our 3 day stay. What a beautiful place!! The waiter took the time to show us the off menu specials despite our ropey Spanish! the squid was exquisite the the beef tartare perfectly balanced, melted in the mouth and the white asparagus was sublime. So unpretentious tables outside in the pavement parents with their kids playing around...simply delightful! How blessed to turn up here at 5pm on a Sunday have plenty of space to sit and enjoy....In two years when we come back I expect we'll be booking in advance or queuing around the block and the table will be turned in 90 minutes. good luck to them they deserve the recognition!

This is a very popular pintxo restaurant and was busy when we visited in the afternoon. This place was a real surprise! We happened to pop into this place after visiting Atari (opposite).
Me and my friend concluded that this place had some of the best pinxtos we had during this trip (prices are slightly higher than other places!)
A modern looking eatery, not overly crowded or busy and the three times we went we were able to get a seat too!
The pinxtos worth trying are the baked sea urchin, baked octopus and the courgette wrapped cheese.
I would give the fried fish and the mushrooms a miss (they were cold and also a bit salty!)

In my opinion, this is one of the most important pintxos locations in San Sebastián. Why do I say that? Before coming here, I visited a few other pintxos bars. Many of them were overcrowded, rushed, not very hygienic, and I even came across some rude waiters.
This place, however, is truly attentive and well cared for. The tables and service are clean, and all the pintxos are displayed like pearls — spotless, neatly arranged, and waiting for you to choose. The staff behind the bar are very experienced and helpful.
The tuna tartare pintxo, served with fried eggplant and red pepper, was an absolute masterpiece. The surimi-based pintxo topped with smoked salmon and shrimp was a real explosion of flavor.
There is so much to try here. Without searching for anywhere else, I will gladly return to this impeccably clean venue to enjoy more pintxos and other Basque specialties.

A big pintxos place that offers a nice variety, so you'll be sure to find something to your liking.
We did not understand the difference between the seating area and the bar area, where you can eat you pintxos standing. Seemed that in both places they served the same pintxos. We were happy though to get offered a table where we could sit at.
The pintxos were nice enough, although the patatas bravas were a bit of a disappointment to me, not spicy at all. We found the service not very welcoming though. A little bit more hospitality to make us feel welcome would have been appreciated.

Mesón Portales turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The pintxos were excellent, combining traditional Basque flavors with remarkable freshness and creativity. We also had the chance to try a seasonal dish: baby tuna (bonito) served in a rich, savory sauce accompanied by fried green peppers. The combination was both hearty and refined — a perfect example of how local cuisine can balance simplicity with depth of flavor.

Tips for Your Pintxos Crawl
To truly eat like a local, you need to understand the rhythm of the city. The following strategies will help you maximize your time, avoid common tourist pitfalls, and ensure that every bite you take is worth the calories. It is not just about eating well; it is about eating smart.
Timing is Everything: The locals generally eat late. Bars are relatively quiet before 8:00 PM, with the rush hour hitting between 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM. If you want to avoid the crush of the crowd and get better service, consider starting your crawl early in the evening, or going for a late lunch around 1:00 PM when the day’s fresh produce has just been laid out.
Look Up and Speak Up: While the cold pintxos on the bar look beautiful, they can sit there for a while. The best dishes are almost always the hot ones listed on the blackboard menus on the wall. Don’t be shy; ask for the "calientes" or point to the menu. These are cooked fresh and represent the chef’s true skill.
Use the Napkin System: It is considered poor form to throw your napkins on the floor in some cities, but in San Sebastián, it is a sign of a good bar. The messier the floor, the better the food. Do not wait for a waiter to clear your space; simply drop your used napkin on the floor and move to the next counter.
Pace Your Drinking: The local pour for wine or the traditional txakoli (a slightly sparkling, dry white wine) is usually small. This is intentional. It allows you to visit multiple bars without getting overwhelmed. Order the house wine or a zurito (a small beer) to keep your palate fresh and your budget intact.
Venture Beyond the Old Town: While the Parte Vieja is the heart of the pintxo scene, it can get incredibly crowded. For a more relaxed experience with equally high-quality food, cross the river to the Gros neighborhood or explore the streets around the Cathedral. These areas cater more to locals and often offer more seating.
Be Adventurous with the "Gilda": The Gilda is the unofficial symbol of San Sebastián. While the classic version is anchovy, olive, and pepper, many bars offer their own variations with tuna, pickled vegetables, or even prawns. Try one at every bar you visit to compare the subtle differences in quality and preparation.
As the night winds down and the last of the txakoli is poured, you will understand why San Sebastián holds such a mythical status among food lovers. It is a city that lives and breathes its culinary heritage, where the line between a simple bar and a fine dining establishment is beautifully blurred. The experience is not just about filling your stomach; it is about connecting with the soul of the Basque Country, one bite at a time.
The memories of these flavors—the salt of the anchovy, the char of the beef, the pop of the olive—will linger long after you leave the cobbled streets. So, go hungry, be curious, and let the city guide you from one unforgettable counter to the next. On egin! (Enjoy your meal!)
