Paris might be the culinary capital of the world, but for many visitors, the thought of dining out conjures images of coq au vin, escargot, and rich, buttery sauces. Yet beneath the surface of traditional bistros lies a thriving, dynamic seafood scene that rivals any coastal city. Thanks to modern supply chains and a deep respect for quality ingredients, the French capital has become a premier destination for oyster lovers, fish enthusiasts, and crustacean connoisseurs.
Whether you are looking for a historic brasserie with towering shellfish platters or a contemporary neo-bistro serving delicate line-caught fish, Paris offers an ocean of choices. The city’s chefs treat seafood with the same reverence they give to truffles or caviar, sourcing the freshest catches daily from the coasts of Brittany, Normandy, and the Mediterranean. This dedication to freshness ensures that even though Paris is landlocked, the maritime flavors are as vibrant as a seaside market.
Navigating the Parisian seafood landscape can be overwhelming, especially when you are faced with hundreds of options ranging from casual oyster shacks to Michelin-starred institutions. The price spectrum is equally vast; you can enjoy a simple plate of briny oysters and a glass of Muscadet for under twenty euros, or you can splurge on a decadent royal platter that feels like a celebration of the sea. Knowing where to go depends largely on the atmosphere you seek and the depth of your wallet.
This guide cuts through the noise to highlight the establishments that consistently deliver exceptional quality, service, and atmosphere. We have focused on restaurants that honor the product, whether that means serving oysters at the perfect temperature or preparing a classic sole meunière tableside. These are places where the provenance of the fish is celebrated and the execution in the kitchen is flawless.
From the bustling streets of Montparnasse to the chic avenues of the 8th arrondissement, the following selections represent the pinnacle of Parisian seafood dining. You will find legendary establishments that have been shucking oysters for over a century, as well as modern spots that are pushing the boundaries of marine gastronomy. Each offers a unique window into why France remains the global benchmark for seafood preparation.
Whether you are a local looking to rediscover your city or a traveler planning the trip of a lifetime, prepare to embark on a gastronomic journey. These are the addresses that define excellence, ensuring that your craving for the freshest oysters, lobster, and sole is satisfied in the most spectacular way possible.

We found this seafood spot just a few steps away from Place Saint-Michel — literally less than a minute's walk, making it a great option after exploring the Latin Quarter or Notre-Dame area.
What impressed us most was the value for money. We ordered the Combo No. 2 and chose lobster, scallops, and shrimp, served with corn, potatoes, and green beans on the side.
The seafood was very fresh. The lobster even had roe, which was a nice surprise. The corn was especially sweet。
The real highlight for us was the garlic butter sauce. It was rich, flavorful, and paired perfectly with all the seafood. We ended up dipping everything into it, including the baguette.

Our dinner at Folie Crabe St. Michel was incredible. We made a reservation because we weren’t sure how busy it would be. There are two floors, and you can choose where you’d like to sit. We chose the ground floor because it had air conditioning.
We were welcomed by an incredibly kind waitress who explained everything on the menu to us. There were four of us, and we ordered Combo 2 and Combo 3, which I think was the perfect choice to share between four people.
Our food arrived amazingly fast—in less than 10 minutes. One combo came with the garlic sauce, while the other included the mixed sauce.
The only thing I didn’t particularly like was that even the garlic sauce was a bit spicy for me, and I don’t like spicy food at all. However, everyone else in our group really enjoyed it.
We ate almost everything. The seafood was fresh, delicious, and full of flavor. To finish the meal, we ordered watermelon for dessert, and it was absolutely amazing as well.
I would definitely come back again!

I had such a lovely experience here. From the moment I arrived, everything felt welcoming and thoughtfully done. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff went out of their way to be kind, attentive, and genuinely helpful.

I had an amazing seafood dinner here today! The seafood was incredibly fresh and delicious—you can really taste the quality. The staff were also very polite and welcoming. What impressed me most was their thoughtfulness: since the hot dishes had cooled down while we were enjoying the cold seafood platter, the server proactively offered to reheat them for us. Such attentive service and great food. Highly recommended!

Amazing seafood recommended by an America friend of mine living in Paris. Don't bother with the menu, just order the duo. Unbelievably fresh huge platter of seafood. The oysters were out of this world, King Neptune delivered them personally today. The wait staff are great, their English is great and one even speaks American! And they all smile, mon dieu! What is happening to Paris! Great wine list, buy a bottle. Best seafood ever. And the manager is amazing, in all possible ways. I will be back for all of it.

Wow!
we were lucky, ran away from the Eifel crowd on valentine, and hoping to find a table in this small family-run seafood place. luckily, there was one free table.
we ordered a plate of lobster, various types of shrimps (pink, gambas, grey), oysters, praires, sea snails.
we didn't even know it included entrees (raviole, and great shrimp dim sum), bread and desert (framboise pie w. 2 chasers of armeniac).
the staff was very warm. congruts for the happy couple (48 years together!) that run the place.
most importantly - all the seafood was very fresh, succulent, tasteful!
200$ (including 2 glasses of Chablis), great VFM!

When reviews say this is the best seafood restaurant in Paris you can believe them. The quality, freshness and quantity of the platters are the best. You need reservations as we watched many a people get turned away, there is limited seating. We’ve eaten seafood towers/ platters in Italy,Spain and France. I’ll take the ones at Langousta in Paris.

Absolutely delicious seafood feast! The seafood was fresh, juicy, and perfectly cooked, coated in a rich, flavorful sauce that balanced spice and sweetness beautifully. Every bite—from the shrimp and crab to the scallops and shellfish—was packed with taste. The generous portion and vibrant presentation made the experience even better. Paired with rice, it was incredibly satisfying and comforting. Great flavors, great quality, and definitely a place I’d return to for another amazing seafood meal. We went into this place at first during the day because of the reviews but then turned away due to how small it was. We then came back the next night and were pleasantly very surprised and regretted turning away the first time. There's is very limited seating but it is absolutely worth it. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and so friendly it's almost comedic. They knew everything about the seafood being served and were very friendly and funny and very accommodating. The oysters were to die for. The shrimp was superb. Don't forget to try the seafood soup. They have a decent selection of booze.

A few days ago we had lunch at Opium La Cabane Paris, and the food was really good. The staff member who looked after us was super friendly and knew a lot about the dishes. The food was fresh and delicious, and we really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. However, we didn’t quite get the atmosphere or vibe we were expecting from the restaurant.
We had made a reservation in advance for Monday night, and the restaurant wasn’t very busy. We did notice that all the Asian customers were seated upstairs. It may have just been a coincidence, but it did make us wonder if there was a reason for it.
Jill Colonna (Mad About Macarons)★★★★★
I love this restaurant - where the seafood arrives fresh daily, direct from Brest. Great food and the atmosphere is rather different: you order crab and you're handed a wooden hammier, tied into a bib and encouraged to get properly stuck into Breton crab, langoustines or prawns and oysters. I had the half crab with 6 oysters - beautiful.
Bread is absolutely delicious and it all comes with a range of homemade mayonnaises also with Tabasco and herbs - plus served with a pot of potatoes, kept warm while you get tuck in.
Problem hammering your crab? The staff are fun and help you if bashing isn't quite your thing but I encourage you to give it a go - so do they as they show you how it's done.
Don't come if you're too sensitive to hammer bashing noises, although even still, it's easy to talk. Great value for money.

Nice atmosphere. Yes staff only speak limited English but good enough to have the menu explained. It is also a good idea to check/translate the menu beforehand to avoid unexpected bills. I didn’t have this problems but some comments said so.
Food is good. Unfortunately plate oysters ran out. The crab has little meat like any other crabs so the meal relies on a bucket of potato to fill. I ordered an extra soup as well. It was nice but staff accidentally took my spoon in the middle of the meal.
Service was quick and staff were nice. They chainsmoke at the entrance of the restaurant though.
Overall, it is a nice restaurant and it is enjoyable once you know the place.

A hidden gem in Paris for seafood.
Operated by an English guy, the setting is small but cozy. Service is top notch.
The Spanish cold soup is very refreshing, depth of flavor is exceptional. Thick and creamy. I originally wanted to try the soup de petit pois, but he said it wasn’t available now and recommended me this one instead.
Then comes my favorite dish, carpaccio de bar(seabass carpaccio), also very fresh, simple ingredients but well executed.
Lastly is the poulpe grillé(grilled octopus), the octopus is very juicy, perfectly seasoned, the potatoes with mustard sauce underneath is also delicious, goes very well with the octopus.
I came here at 12nn sharp, the first customer of the day probably, so I got to have a little chat with the chef. He said he probably spent longer time here in Paris than back in London.
If you are a seafood lover and looking for good food at good price, here is the place, not a doubt about it.

Went with a friend who had been before on our last night in Paris, and what a treat! We shared five dishes plus the pumpkin soup with hazelnuts, each one light, fresh, and perfectly prepared. The octopus was crispy on the outside yet tender inside. The sea bass carpaccio was exceptionally fresh and melted in the mouth. The squid at the end was pure “fresh ocean” flavor with just the right bite. A wonderful dining experience—highly recommended!

Very interesting concept of grilled seafood and raw seafood. Chef has a good taste to use various herbs and spices to flavour the food. Also the chef speaks English, and was kind enough to explain every item on the menu (which is only available in French). A little pricy though.
Wei Yang★★★★★
The chef is outstanding. He clearly knows good sources of freshest and quality supplies and brings the best taste out! I ordered three dishes and everyone was cooked to perfection. The Lotte a la plancha was so delicious that I ordered again. But the fish was out, so the chef and hostess offered thinly sliced bronzini and ceviche for free instead. Both tasted superb and different. If you are a foodie and fond of seafood, you have to give it a try and won’t be disappointed. The restaurant is tiny, and the chef prepared every dish with care.

On the last night of my solo trip to Paris, I stumbled upon this restaurant near Place d'Italie. I didn't have a reservation but the chef kindly accommodated at the bar. He recommended the mixed seafood dish, which turned out to be the best meal I've had in a while. I also sampled the mussels in coconut milk, so divine. Next time I'm back in Paris, I'll be sure to make a reservation.

Came here with my parents while visiting Paris, and all of us really enjoyed the meal. It’s the first time for all of us having seafood boil. The flavouring was delicious, and the seafoods were super fresh. We ordered a 2-3 persons meal, and added a couple dishes on the side. The portions were so generous that we were unable to finish all the food. Antoine was super friendly and kind, we felt very welcome even though we don’t speak French. Great restaurant!! Bonus: the music is the background was excellent. ❤️

My husband and I visited this establishment on our final day in Paris, quite spontaneously. I must express my regret that we did not discover it sooner, as I would have thoroughly enjoyed a second visit. The cuisine was exceptional, with wonderful flavors that, in my opinion, surpassed those I experienced in New Orleans, America. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was truly enjoyable. I would undoubtedly return here on my next visit to Paris. The seafood was incredibly fresh; I believe the shrimp was the finest boiled shrimp I have ever tasted. Since returning to America, I have frequently thought about this place, and I will certainly make it a point to revisit on my next trip to Paris.

Really good fish dishes. Very well prepared and with nice sauces. I had the skate wing, which I ate for the first time in my life and I really enjoyed it. The sauce with butter and berries was excellent. My starter was the octopus carpaccio, which was also delicious. Staff was very friendly. Only minor point of feedback is the music. A lot of usual suspects from classical music. Rather unoriginal and dated. The prices are high, but the food is worth it.

Absolutely the best food and service we had in paris.
Service was amazing, very welcoming and you felt very looked after.
Ambiance of the restaurant was great too, classical music in the background not too soft not too loud.
Food wise prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you are getting.
Everything was timed perfectly and the seafood was cook to perfection.
This place if it doesn't already have a Michelin star definitely deserves one!
Highly recommend.

The food was great - especially the oysters, gambas carpaccio, and crevettes roses - and the fries were amazing. The demi homard bleu wasn’t worth the €30 (small and dry). The service was friendly and efficient, and outdoor seating was a plus. A great seafood spot in Paris! Recommended.

A cosy bistro serving mainly seafood. The staff were very cheerful. As I am not a huge fans of decapods, we didn't order the fancy seafood platter. We ordered a dozen of oysters and two pots of mussels instead. The mussels were so fresh and tasty. I had to ask for more bread because of the sauce. I suggest to get there before noon if for lunch, as it could get very busy.
Eskimo in igloo★★★☆☆
We ordered the raw seafood platter to start, but found the portioning quite small and the preparation overall inconvenient to eat. Hoping for better, we added the seafood soup, gambas carpaccio, and a pot of mussels. While we weren't expecting high-end fine dining execution given the casual concept, the dishes were thoroughly average—lacking the fresh, vibrant flavors you’d hope for from a neighborhood seafood spot.
It might work as a decent fallback if choices nearby are extremely limited, but it's not somewhere I’d go out of my way to recommend.
MichelA★☆☆☆☆
Such a deception. We were so happy to have sea food. We ordered 18 oysters decently good, plus fish soup, fried small fishes also decently good without looking really home made, worse were smelly mussels, smelling super bad and almost empty. When I made it smell to the waitress, she took it back immediately saying that this is not mussels season, but how the hell can you serve that 🙁 so disappointed… service was also poor as the waitress was alone, trying to do her best but obviously one is not enough. We will not come back - ever

Thank you for such a thoughtful approach and for the delicious, fresh dishes. We were absolutely delighted.

I’m giving them 4 stars because they were so open to our modifications. But the octopus was very chewy. The steak tartar was pretty good. The oysters were ok, wishing they were fresher. The sole wasn’t traditional with a creamy butter sauce. The escargot were great but lacked sauce. The burrata was not great, I miss Italian burrata. They served us a delicious salad in place of potatoes which was nice. It’s a very cute restaurant in a great neighborhood. Service 5 stars, food only 3.

We went here based on a recommendation. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The inside has nice ship/ocean decor. There are bathrooms on the first floor upstairs. We ordered the lobster rolls, grilled prawns, mussels, side salad, and side cooked vegetables as well as a glass of wine and beer. The best food was the mussels. The style was that they were flavored but didn’t have much broth to dip. The lobster rolls were good. The shrimp had an almost lobster like quality and come with their heads on. Drinks are pricier here with bottled water also being very expensive. We didn’t get any raw platters but saw many people with oysters. While you can have a more leisurely meal, you can also have a faster meal here if you’re an international traveler.

Hope you'll get to return soon—it's definitely a place worth revisiting. 😊
An absolutely unforgettable experience! The food was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The service was outstanding—warm, attentive, and professional—and the atmosphere was simply perfect. It was one of the best meals we had in Paris. I'm already dreaming of coming back and experiencing it all over again. Highly recommended, and thank you for such a wonderful evening!

We were craving a seafood bowl after a long day at Disney, and we were so happy to find Yes Crab open until 2 a.m. We called ahead to make sure they were still open, and they were incredibly welcoming. The owners were incredible!
It turned out to be the perfect way to end the night. The seafood bowl was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were looking for after a long day. The late-night hours were a lifesaver, and the whole experience exceeded our expectations. If you’re looking for a great seafood spot, even after a busy day, I definitely recommend Yes Crab!

Some cold, some warm options. All very fresh. My favourite the oysters n3, ceviche and the tacos. Very kind service. Thank you!
Inside only high tables and bar, otherwise outside normal tables. Not many tables, I would recommend booking in advance.

Found by mistake, it was a great surprise, it was wha I was looking for to chill and had good food!
Easy vibe bistrot with excellent quality fish surrounded by a juicy dry glass of white wine. The oysters were supreme! Good balance price/quality
The ladies very gentle, I will defenetly come back!

The oysters were extremely fresh and delicious — so good that we ordered more, with no issues at all afterward.
The eggs and salmon gravlax were also tasty.
Couteaux gratinés were not bad but there was an earthy taste at the end.
Overall, it was great to enjoy good seafood in Paris. I’d definitely come back for oysters.

The seafood platter was incredibly satisfying, packed with fresh flavors and textures. The crab was huge with rich, creamy roe, and the shrimp and oysters were perfectly fresh. Such a nice late afternoon treat!

Friendly service. The food is tasty. Good tapas. The price/performance ratio is good. You should reserve in advance. Recommended.

Visited Mr & Mrs Crab near Place Saint-Michel and Notre-Dame on a very hot day. Many restaurants on the street had their doors wide open, but very few had air conditioning. One of the reasons we chose this place was the comfortable indoor temperature, with two large AC units keeping the dining room pleasantly cool.
We ordered the Combo 1 seafood boil for two, and the portions were very generous. In fact, it was more than enough for two people.
The highlight was definitely the brown crab. It was very meaty and full of roe. We chose their signature house sauce (non-spicy), which tasted like a delicious mix of garlic and curry. The sauce was rich, flavorful, and paired very well with the seafood.
The corn, potatoes, and sausages included in the combo were also well seasoned. Overall, the quality and portion size were excellent.
Conveniently located near Place Saint-Michel and Notre-Dame, with friendly service and a comfortable atmosphere. A great option for seafood lovers, especially during the summer.

I recently visited this seafood spot next to Notre dame de Paris and tried their lobster roll and seafood. I was honestly impressed!
The lobster roll was packed with fresh, juicy lobster meat, perfectly seasoned, and served in a soft, buttery bun.
Cajun style seafood was also a highlight! Full of flavor, well-seasoned, and generous in portion. Eating with your 🙌 🙌
Service was friendly and efficient as well. If you’re a seafood lover, this place is definitely worth checking out. I would happily come back again!

This place is absolutely wonderful! I got the lobster set meal, and the lobster was amazing. The meat was firm, bouncy and tender. I also loved the corn on the side so much, it was my favourite part too. Plus it’s really close to Notre-Dame de Paris, which makes the location perfect.
Larissa★★★★★
The restaurant is not far from Notre-Dame, so the location is great. They focus on seafood boil that originated in the US, but they also have other main dishes. We ordered the shrimp, lobster sandwich, and the seafood boil — everything was fresh. The Cajun sauce for the seafood boil was super flavorful, and the cocktails were on point too. Lots of neon lights inside, so I bet it's even more atmospheric at night. Perfect spot for a good meal, then head to the jazz bar across the street for some great live music.

MR & MRS CRAB is an outstanding seafood restaurant! A friend recommended it, and it definitely lived up to the hype. We tried Combo No.2, and every dish was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The quality of the seafood is top-notch. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving delicious seafood!

The entree of the day was a fish soup which was the best we had ever had! And the fish of the day (redfish) was so delicious and paired with a great mashed sweet potato. Also amazing mussels that you can have prepared a couple of different ways - so amazing! Loved everything about the food and this restaurant!

Let me preface this by saying I would come here again given the opportunity. I thought the menu was inventive and the service and atmosphere - though minimal - made me feel welcome. Because my French had grown very rusty over the years, I was grateful to have a server who spoke decent English.
Because the entree side of the menu felt a lot more exciting than the mains, I chose to go with two entrees and a bowl of whelks. Because where else are you going to get whelks at a restaurant!?
My entrees were the heirloom tomatoes with anchovies and the crab "ravioli" with courgette.
My whelks came with a sauce on the side, which I am assuming was meant to be mayonnaise (or perhaps aioli).
Out of the three, the tomatoes were my favourite. The tomatoes themselves were lovely and they were swimming in a nicely tangy olive oil based sauce. My only issue with this dish was the anchovies. I like an anchovy but for the first time in my life I felt I had *too many* anchovies. There were heaps on each tomato slice! And they did unfortunately overpower the dish slightly. At the same time they probably added a much needed savoriness to the sauce but I would have reduced the amount of anchovies served.
A "raviolo" was actually a scoop of crab meat draped over by a thin slice of courgette with some sweet fruit (I think apples) on the side. Overall, not a bad dish, but I did not like the seasoning on the crab meat. Good crab meat tastes slightly sweet but this was pretty bland, and therefore the entire dish was a bit bland. I got the texture of crab meat without the flavour.
The whelks were prepared well and had a subtle taste, so good quality produce handled well! My biggest issue with the whelks, and indeed the entire evening, was the sauce on the side. I don't know if it was supposed to be a mayonnaise or an aioli, but it sorely lacked in salt and acid. It tasted like I was dipping my whelks into whipped egg yolk - very rich, slightly bitter, but nothing to elevate the dish with. I don't know if they missed out on the lemon juice, the salt or the dijon, but whatever their recipe is, it definitely needs a salty acidic element. In the end I mixed some of the anchovy sauce with the whelk sauce and that improved it significantly.
For dessert I had a rum baba and I couldn't really fault it. Maybe would have liked to taste more rum in the dish but honestly that's nit picking.
This is clearly a very popular restaurant. It filled up by around 8 PM and had a lovely buzz to it. And, as stated, the service was very accommodating. So don't hesitate to give it a go. Maybe they just had a bad night with me. There is definitely a lot of potential on the menu.

Had a light but satisfying lunch of 3 oysters served with a Tabasco lemon sauce, and a lovely Carpaccio of Sea Breem on a bed of lemon puree and parsley root (I think). It was delicious. I sat at the bar as I love to do and due to the late afternoon hour it wasn’t too crowded.

Great food, even better service. Our server was extremely patient and helpful in suggesting wine pairings with our meal.
Even though there was a lunatic who insisted on bringing in watermelon to eat while they waited for their meal, and then was critical of the food and service. The restaurant staff remained extremely professional, and even when discussing it with us, remained sympathetic.

Lovely seafood restaurant near Republique. The oysters and sea urchin were excellent.
The wine was good but leans mostly on the natural / orange style for those hoping for more traditional styles.

The food, the service and the ambience were all perfect. It’s a more intimate dining experience, so make reservations but you will not be disappointed. Some of the freshest and best tasting seafood of my life. I was literally battling a stomach bug and risked it just because it smelled so good.

A well-known oyster bar that seems to be particularly popular among Asian travellers and on social media.
The €49 per person set is quite good value, with 12 oysters and 4 large prawns, making it a generous seafood meal.
Overall, the seafood was good, although I personally found the oysters slightly less fresh compared with some of the other oyster bars I tried in France.
Still a good experience and worth considering, especially if you want a convenient oyster set with plenty of seafood.

This oyster bar was easily one of the most memorable stops of my trip. It’s small, intimate, and feels like a true local gem. Beyond the spectacular shellfish, the service was genuinely phenomenal—they make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. If you want a meal that feels special and authentic to Paris, don’t miss this.

A dozen large, fresh, and clean oysters plus a glass of crisp white wine for 39 EU is a great price, compared to many places in the US. Starter of tarama was delicious. Prompt and courteous service. Wish this spot was in my ‘hood at home!
Lyla Chang★★★★★
The oysters were fat, juicy, and so fresh! These were beautiful oysters and they tasted heavenly. The place inside is a bit small and the service was okay but the oysters were 10/10!
Predrag P★★★★☆
The quality of the oysters on offer is excellent. However, it is surprising that out of five varieties listed, the restaurant did not have its “best selection” available, explained by very limited supply and quick sell-outs — particularly disappointing given that many previous reviews specifically praise those oysters.
Service feels rather flat and disengaged, with a waiter who appeared unmotivated. The atmosphere is further cooled by the noticeably low temperature in the dining room; heating was only turned on once a group of eight guests arrived. The restaurant itself is very small and somewhat cramped, and I did not even notice a restroom — nor did I feel inclined to ask.
In summary, the food quality is undeniably strong, but a series of small details significantly detracts from the overall experience.
How to Choose the Perfect Seafood Experience in Paris
Selecting the right seafood restaurant in Paris requires a bit of strategy, as the term “seafood” can mean anything from a standing-room-only raw bar to a formal, white-tablecloth dining experience. Understanding the nuances of French seafood dining will help you avoid tourist traps and dine like a true local. Here are some essential tips to ensure your maritime meal is a highlight of your trip.
1. Understand the Difference Between a Brasserie and a Poissonnerie
In Paris, a classic brasserie often serves grand seafood platters alongside traditional meat dishes, offering a bustling, historic atmosphere. A dedicated fish restaurant, or restaurant de poissons, focuses almost exclusively on fin fish and shellfish, usually offering more creative preparations. Decide if you want the energy of a grand dining room or the focused precision of a specialty kitchen before you book.
2. Master the Art of Ordering Oysters
If you are new to oysters, start with a number 3 (medium-sized) from a specific region like Marennes-Oléron or Utah Beach. Oysters are ordered by the dozen or half-dozen, and they come with mignonette (shallot vinegar), lemon, and brown bread with salted butter. Avoid drowning them in toppings; a squeeze of lemon or a drop of mignonette is enough to appreciate the briny complexity of the terroir.
3. Look for “Arrivage” or Daily Specials
The freshest fish in Paris is flown or driven in daily. Look for menus that feature “arrivage du jour” (daily arrival) or ask your server what came in that morning. Restaurants that change their menu based on the morning market are usually sourcing the highest quality product. If a restaurant has a static menu with no mention of daily catches, the fish is likely frozen or less fresh.
4. Don’t Overlook the “Poisson du Jour” at Neo-Bistros
While the grand brasseries are spectacular, some of the best fish in Paris is currently being cooked by young chefs in smaller, modern bistros. These chefs often buy whole fish and utilize every part, serving dishes like line-caught pollock with beurre blanc or grilled sardines. These spots offer incredible value and creativity compared to the more expensive, tourist-heavy boulevards.
5. Respect the Etiquette of the Shellfish Platter
If you order a plateau de fruits de mer, it will arrive with specific tools: a small fork, a pincer, and sometimes a pin for periwinkles. Start with the raw items (oysters and sea urchins) before moving to the cooked items like shrimp and crab. Don’t be afraid to use your hands for the crab and langoustines; finger bowls with lemon are provided for exactly this reason.
6. Pair with Wine, Not Cocktails
While a cocktail might be tempting, the French know that seafood pairs best with crisp, mineral-driven white wines. Stick to a Muscadet, Chablis, Sancerre, or a dry Riesling. These wines cut through the richness of the butter and the salinity of the oysters without overpowering the delicate flavors of the fish.
The seafood scene in Paris is a testament to the city’s ability to transport you to the coast without ever leaving the Metro line. Whether you choose a historic institution steeped in Art Nouveau decor or a minimalist chef-driven counter, the commitment to freshness remains the same. Dining on seafood in the capital is not just a meal; it is a ritual that connects you to the maritime heritage of France.
As you plan your culinary itinerary, remember that the best experiences often require a reservation, especially for dinner service on weekends. Trust the daily specials, ask your server for their honest recommendation on the freshest catch, and allow yourself to linger over a plateau of oysters. In a city that moves fast, a seafood meal in Paris is the perfect excuse to slow down and savor the moment.
