15 Best Bakeries in Menton

The French Riviera is synonymous with glamour, but Menton brings a quieter, more colorful charm to the coastline. Nestled against the Italian border, this town is famous for its lemons, its mild microclimate, and its pastel-hued old town. Yet, beyond the citrus groves and gardens, Menton is quietly establishing itself as a haven for serious bread lovers and pastry enthusiasts.

While tourists often flock to the beach, locals know that the true soul of the city is found in the early morning hours, when the scent of butter and yeast drifts through the narrow pedestrian lanes. The bakery culture here is a beautiful hybrid, blending the precision of French pâtisserie with the rustic, olive-oil-kissed influences of neighboring Liguria. This creates a unique offering you will not find in Paris or Nice.

From crispy baguettes that crackle when you squeeze them to delicate tarts topped with glistening local citrus, the standard is exceptionally high. Many of these establishments are family-run, passing down starters and techniques through generations. They serve as the daily meeting point for the community, fueling conversations over espresso and fresh croissants.

Choosing the best spot, however, can be overwhelming with so many options tucked away in arcades and along the bustling pedestrian street of Rue Saint-Michel. You want to avoid the tourist traps that serve frozen dough and seek out the artisans who are up before dawn, hand-shaping their loaves. The difference is immediately noticeable in the texture and digestibility of the bread.

To help you navigate the culinary landscape, we have curated a list of the definitive destinations for baked goods in the city. We have evaluated them based on the quality of their ingredients, the mastery of their lamination, the crust of their sourdough, and their commitment to the local Mentonnais community.

Whether you are looking for a flaky pain au chocolat to start your day, a fougasse to pack for a picnic at the Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden, or a delicate lemon tart to end your evening, this guide has you covered. Prepare to walk a lot and eat even more.

As a macaron lover, absolutely loved this place. Their pastries and bakery products are super delicious. The selection is big and the staff are super helpful and nice. Also, just by the beach so perfect location

We went to try the 2025 Best Pain au Chocolat in the region, how was it? We just laugh it over…… We queued for about 10 minutes, and by 10:30 a.m., there were only a few pain au chocolat left. Fortunately, we managed to get the last two—but unfortunately, they did not live up to the expectations that came with the title. The pastry was neither flaky nor fragrant, and it lacked the rich aroma of chocolate and buttery flavor that we’ve experienced in pain au chocolat from many local bakeries. The interior was also soggy, almost as if they had been sitting out overnight. We didn’t try the other pastries, so we can’t comment on those, but based on our experience, we wouldn’t recommend the pain au chocolat.

Fantastique in every respect. The bread is amazing and the pastries 🍰 are top class. Our boutique hotel that we stayed in uses their bread everyday. Wonderful all round Merci beaucoup.
Barry Frangipane★★★★★
We ate the croissants au beurre, pains aux raisins, pains au chocolat, and baguette épis. Everything was very good, and would compete well with a Parisian boulangerie.

I decided to visit this place while planning a trip to Menton. I bought a croissant and lemon tart yesterday and ate it this morning. I thought that it would be more delicious if I ate a freshly made croissant right away. Next time I visit, I definitely want to eat there. I usually like lemon tart, but as soon as I took a bite, the freshness was no joke. It's really fresh and so delicious.

While walking around Menton on a hot day, we first noticed the crowd of locals gathered there. Then we spotted some fresh, newly baked pastries and decided to give them a try. Of course, the locals’ choice didn’t disappoint—it was the best lemon tart we’ve had in all of southern France. You should definitely give it a try.
Brianna Laricchia★★★★★
A MUST TRY bakery in Menton and well worth the wait! One of the best lemon tarts I’ve ever had and a very generous portion as well! I highly recommend and will definitely return!
Michael Uzmann★★★★★
Tucked away on a quiet alley in Menton one would never assume the owner of Mitron Bakery has amassed 8 Michelin Stars, but under the banner of Mauro Colagreco the take-away only space at 8 Rue Pieta is serving the sort of baked good one wishes they could find in Monaco. Fully embracing ownership’s commitment to sustainable practices, all Flour certified-organic with natural harvesting and milled daily in Menton, it is inside the small space that guests will find Breads, Viennoiserie and Cakes all at fair prices. Staffed by a lone woman on Friday, friendly in explaining her favorites, first bites from a Medialuna found sweet glaze overlying open laminaton while Fougasse Menton ate more like the savory Flatbread with notes of Orange and Anise than the version a few miles west. Sold out of award-winning Panettone on this day, though anyone disappointed will find solace in a faultless Lemon Tart, both Costata and Flan change daily based on local markets and if the two tasted are representative of the “usual” then one of each is recommended with the latter’s top-to-bottom contrasts particularly noteworthy.
Steve Lahos★★★★☆
Mirton Bakery in Menton is a small but worthwhile stop for anyone who appreciates well‑crafted pastries. We tried two different citron cakes, and both were genuinely delightful — perfectly balanced, neither too sweet nor too, bright citrus flavor done right. Simply tasteful, and absolutely deserving of a visit. The on‑site consumption options are rather spartan, so this is not the place to linger over a long coffee break. But if you’re here for the cake — and you should be — the quality speaks for itself. Sometimes simplicity is exactly what makes a place shine. A solid address for lemon lovers and anyone exploring Menton’s sweeter side.
Kyra Quigley★★★★★
Stopped in for a baguette. Left with a chocolate cookie, focaccia sandwich, and a cappuccino. The focaccia sandwich had pistachio pesto which was absolutely amazing. It was huge. The cappuccino was delicious, and they offered cinnamon or chocolate on top. It was exceptional with chocolate. The conversation was very pleasant with both women working there as well. Definitely a delightful little moment this morning!

We were just walking by and the display of pastries looked so good that we couldn't resist going in. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. We also ordered iced coffee, which was excellent. We absolutely loved our visit and highly recommend Ave Pâtisserie if you’re looking for a top-quality treat
Erik Haroldson★★★★★
All the pastries are a work of art and delicious. The croissants and pain au chocolates are likely the best I have ever eaten.

We were in Menton for awhile and tried many bakeries but this place was the best! Their pastries are so nice and have the perfect crisp. The one with the pistachio and the one with the raspberry or strawberry compote inside is something I still think of all the time. The cakes were delicious also but the pastries were really the best. I cannot wait to go back when I am in the area next time. The staff is very nice also.
Ana-Maria Rotaru★★★★★
We loved every piece of desert we bought from here. You can feel and taste the quality of the ingredients. Our top favorite was the cookie with pieces of chocolate, it's out of this world. 🫠

I just love the owner and her pastries! I had the freshest and less sweet strawberry long mini cake ever ! Been traveling in France for a month now, and I must say this is my favorite patisserie! The owner is very friendly and welcoming. Her place is clean and charming. A true hidden gem.

It’s not really possible to sit at the table you prefer, as most of them are marked as reserved. We were told reserved guests would arrive, but no one came, so we ended up at a very uncomfortable table for two, which made breakfast difficult as even our plates barely fit. The staff were good, and I don’t think this was their fault. It seems more like the management’s approach, and because of this I was not fully satisfied.
Vicente Ramirez Garat★★☆☆☆
The service was great until we got the owner. We had an issue with our order and she (at first) refused to change it. We ended up paying for something we didn’t even consume. And honestly the food was not fresh at all. Wouldn’t come back. Keep walking and you’ll find way better options at the same price.
Erika Steponavičiūtė★★☆☆☆
Food was very mid for the price, lack of flavour, not tasty. I don’t know why people evaluate this place with good stars. Location was good. Waiter (male) was positive, though more smilling would be appreciated :))
Christopher Varney★★★★★
We are on an extended state here in Menton (from Canada) and discovered Vanilla Bakery. It was our hope to find a local coffee shop to call our own while away. Vanilla has delivered in every way! Their menu is outstanding with budget friendly pricing. The shop is extremely clean and bright and to top it all off the staff are wonderful and have become our friends. Highly recommend!
Rachel Kreynin★★★★★
Nice bakery in Menton with a tasty croissant selection, from plain croissants to pistachio croissants and the croissant was fresh and perfectly textured. My cafe latte was also well crafted with a good amount of milk foam and served with a glass of water. The atmosphere is nice, with outside and inside seating and umbrellas outside for shade. The service was quick and friendly. I look forward to my next visit

At a busy junction, definitely a nice place to start your culinary voyage into Menton. Lots of desserts and pastries
Teresa Koster★★★★★
We took two petits éclairs and one chausson aux pommes before rushing to the station. We didn’t expect much from a boulangerie in that location, but there were many clients. The lady was really kind and the food was good (especially the chausson aux pommes). Probably the best place for a quick snack among all the options around the station, at least on Monday at 5 p.m.
Grace T★★★★★
I have NEVER written a review before. This is the BEST baguette I have ever had!!! Got the original one and better than an award winning one had in paris. Everything looked so good, priced reasonably, and super nice lady!!!
SPNH2233★★★★★
While we stayed in Menton visiting the French Rivera, this Boulangerie is our everyday "MUST GO" baker. The bread is fresh, two services a day so you can get freshly baked warm bread for lunch and dinner. The line could be long abound 5-6pm but you really don't wait much long since the ladies work there are super efficient and very nice. It worths every penny to get into the line for their bread. I haven't tried all the bakery in Menton but certainly this boulangerie is one of the beat in town. Recommend this place.
music tv★★★★☆
Wonderful variety of great breads, I can eat them every morning. Great sandwiches, however, the pastries were pretty average. The prices are very reasonable and the value for money is great. There is no sitting which is the only downside.

This is the best baguette (“tradition”) in Menton! Get there early because they do sell out! Pair it with a nice cheese, and a nice bottle of wine. Incredible!

Ma Premiere Boulangerie has the best croissant in Menton after trying a few other bakeries in town. The croissant was flaky made with best quality of butter. The baker was very friendly, kind and helpful. When I asked about the hazelnut spread, he didn’t hesitate to open a new jar of the spread and slice a loaf of bread for me to try. I bought few other tasty treats this morning. Can’t wait to try them. Ma Premiere Boulangerie is a real gem in Menton.

great selection of viennoiserie located in the market hall. one of the most delicious pain au chocolat and almond croissants i’ve ever had. they are very generous with the chocolate and the almond one also had chocolate in it - yum!!!

David Jaffe★★★★★
Best baguette in Mention, and the croissants and pains au chocolat are as good as any we've tried -- and we have tried a lot. Nice people, convenient hours. Definitely our favorite bakery! Ask for a baguette "bien cuit" for a crispier crust.
James Sweeney★★★★★
Almond croissants and croissants dipped in white / dark chocolate outstanding
Mira Gaponiuk★☆☆☆☆
The service was not great, the selling lady was touching/ showing the products with her long nails which was not agréable at all ! I have asked for one chausson au pomme but after I paid I discovered there were two. I asked to reheat my pie ( we bought three parts of different pies ) but they were still cold after 3 minutes of waiting. We spent 25 euros in this bakery but the experience was very poor. Need an attention for an owner. 👎🏻
Hilary★★★★★
The most delicious pain au chocolate. You can tell how popular they are by the long queues and amount of locals! If you go early, there is a huge variety of breads, pastries, quiches and tarts. I noticed the locals particularly favoured the baguettes. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They use a machine for cashiering which was a relief for me who had large notes which I felt embarrassed to ask change for 🤭 After grabbing pastries, take a 5min walk towards the sea and enjoy your pastry on one of the large & comfortable benches~

Excellent stop at Jean-Luc Pelé Artisan Boulanger in Menton! The baguettes and breads have that perfect crisp crust and airy crumb from natural levain, while the pastries and viennoiseries are beautifully crafted, flavorful, and notably lighter on sugar without losing any indulgence. Fresh, high-quality ingredients shine through. A real gem on the Riviera for breakfast or a quick treat. Highly recommend!

The best boulangerie & pâtisserie around! An absolute must when you’re here. Amazing pastries and bread, but also really good salads for lunch. Great coffee too, and they’re open every day from early morning until 19pm. Definitely worth a stop!

The best pâtisserie in town. I tried plenty of pâtisseries during my holiday but this one is so far the best one. Desserts are made on a day! The freshest pâtisserie I have ever had in, not just in the town but in France. Fresh, soft, balanced sweetness. Merci beaucoup
Raphael Reinke★★★★★
Pain au chocolate and croissant super well made, beautiful color, airy, firm just perfect. we arrived at 4 pm and they weren’t crunchy enough. Since I assume it’s something people have in the morning / midday, we were a little late. That’s why I’m still giving 5 stars. If you want them absolute perfect, I think it’s best to come in the morning. Cookie was phenomenal. Iced latte was very good. Available in sugar and no sugar. Sugar is very sweet though. Service was quick and very friendly. She spoke well English. Definitely recommend coming!
Chiara De Bellis★★★★★
I visited with my boyfriend cause in came out on google as the best patisserie around Menton and it didn’t disappoint. The pastries were very good and afterwords we also got their cookies which were even better, best cookie I’ve ever had, highly recommended. Beautiful pâtisserie with amazing food and great outdoor seating.Their croissant sandwich is a masterpiece—so flaky and packed with fresh fillingz They have a massive selection of both sweet and savory artisanal bakes.Great coffee, nice atmosphere, and friendly service. Will definitely be back!
Ali Knapp★★★★★
We at breakfast here most days on holiday. The staff were so friendly and kind, even helping me along so that I could manage to order with my dodgy French (eau plate! 🙂 The croissants are TO DIE FOR - and they have one in particular which is a hybrid of a croissant pastry with a raspberry filling - this was off the charts! The cakes selection is also magnificent! Coffee and also black tea excellent here. It's a nice location on the street for people watching.

Great bread and even better service. We bought a baguette, two pain au chocolats and a tarte pomme, all of which were wonderful. Very fine traditional French patisserie. Very friendly staff. Recommended.

I made a quick stop here for coffee and pastry and the croissant was the best I had in 8 days in south France!!! I wish I found this place earlier so that I could have enjoyed more of the pastries 🩷 The cafe is simple and clean, and you can tell it’s a place very frequented by the locals. There are English wordings on the menu and the prices were also very affordable. There is limited English but the owner & staffs do understand enough to be able to communicate. They felt a bit cold at first but I believe it’s bcos it’s not an area w many non-French tourists. After a minute, I found them to be quite warm and sincere. As in any foreign country, practicing patience and respect will go a very long way between 2 parties who are trying to understand each other 🩷

Tips for Choosing the Best Baked Goods in Menton

Navigating the bakery scene in a border town like Menton requires a bit of local knowledge. The culinary traditions here are diverse, meaning a great bakery might excel at French viennoiserie but also offer incredible Italian focaccia. To ensure you are getting the freshest and most authentic products, there are a few unspoken rules you should follow. Understanding the rhythm of the day and the visual cues of a quality shop will significantly elevate your tasting experience.

Look for the "Artisan Boulanger" Sign
In France, the title "Boulanger" is legally protected. A shop can only call itself a Boulangerie if the dough is kneaded and baked on the premises. If you see a sign that says "Artisan Boulanger," you are in the right place. Avoid "Dépôt de Pain," which is simply a retail outlet selling bread that was baked elsewhere, often frozen.

Timing is Everything
The French eat their bread fresh, often buying it multiple times a day. The best time to buy baguettes is around breakfast (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) when they are still warm from the oven, or just before lunch (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM). For pastries, morning is best. If you buy a baguette in the late afternoon, it may have been sitting out for hours.

Judge a Book by its Color
In Menton, color is key. A well-baked baguette should be a deep golden caramel color, not pale blonde. A pale crust usually indicates an oven that wasn’t hot enough or a dough that was under-proofed. Similarly, croissants should be a deep brown on the outside; if they are yellow and greasy, they were likely baked with margarine instead of pure butter (beurre sec).

Embrace the Local Specialties
While you can get a standard croissant anywhere, look for regional items. Because of the Italian influence, Menton excels at fougasse, a leaf-shaped bread often studded with olives or herbs. You should also try "tarte au citron" made with local Menton lemons, which have a distinct, sweeter profile than other varieties. Don’t be afraid to ask for the "spécialité de la maison."

Order Like a Local
When buying a baguette, you can ask for it "pas trop cuite" (not too cooked/light) or "bien cuite" (well done/dark). If you want a traditional shape, ask for a "baguette tradition." This indicates it was made with higher quality flour and no additives. Also, always greet the staff with a "Bonjour" upon entering and say "Merci, bonne journée" when leaving; it is an essential part of the cultural exchange.

As the sun sets over the Mediterranean and the shutters close on the pastry displays, Menton settles into a comfortable rhythm. The bakers have long since finished their work, but their craft defines the mornings of everyone who lives here. A great bakery is more than just a place to buy food; it is a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s identity.

Taking the time to visit these artisans offers a deeper understanding of what makes Menton special. It is a town that values tradition, quality, and the simple pleasure of breaking bread. Whether you prefer the sour tang of a rustic miche or the sweet delicacy of a lemon meringue tart, this city offers a symphony of flavors waiting to be explored one crumb at a time.
