12 Best Rooftop Cafes in Menton

Perched between the shimmering Mediterranean and the dramatic foothills of the French Riviera, Menton offers a visual spectacle unlike any other coastal town. Known as the "Pearl of France," its unique microclimate produces a riot of citrus colors and lush gardens that cascade down toward the sea. However, to truly appreciate the town’s architectural charm and the gradient of blue where the sky meets the water, one must elevate their perspective.

The rooftop cafe culture in Menton is a study in understated elegance. Unlike the flashy beach clubs of Cannes or the bustling terraces of Nice, Menton’s elevated spaces prioritize intimacy, shade, and the quiet observation of the harbor. It is a place where the clink of a coffee cup is accompanied by the distant call of seagulls and the gentle rustle of lemon trees.

Visitors often arrive searching for the perfect vantage point to watch the sunset stain the pastel facades of the old town in hues of pink and gold. Others seek a quiet corner to enjoy a slow breakfast while the town wakes up below. These elevated havens provide a sensory experience that combines the aroma of freshly roasted beans with the salty breeze of the Ligurian Sea.

The architecture of Menton lends itself beautifully to vertical exploration, with many historic buildings featuring hidden terraces that are invisible from the narrow streets below. Finding these spots often requires a sense of adventure, a willingness to climb a flight of worn stone stairs, or navigating through a boutique hotel lobby. The reward is an unobstructed view of the bay, stretching from the Italian border toward Monaco.

The selection of cafes in this guide prioritizes not just the view, but the quality of the coffee, the authenticity of the service, and the overall atmosphere. We have considered factors such as shade coverage during the peak afternoon sun, the comfort of the seating, and the availability of local specialties like the famous Menton lemonade. These are places where you can linger for hours without feeling rushed.

Whether you are a digital nomad looking for a scenic workspace or a traveler seeking the perfect backdrop for a holiday photograph, Menton’s rooftops offer a distinct charm. Below is a curated list of the finest elevated terraces the city has to offer, each providing a unique angle on this picturesque border town.

Unfortunately the service was slow and inadequate- almost as though the wait staff had has no training whatsoever. The food was well prepared when we got it, but we will not return. One person was overcharged as well.
Amanda Kent★☆☆☆☆
Looks absolutely nothing like the photos. Also unfriendly dismissive bar staff. Sorry

A fantastic experience at the Med Rooftop! The burger from the special 2026 World Cup menu was truly excellent, generous, and delicious. The cocktails were also very well done, perfect for enjoying the rooftop in a pleasant atmosphere. I can't wait to come back and try the à la carte menu!

The setting is beautiful, certainly, but that's not everything. The staff isn't particularly welcoming, which is a shame, and the portions are ridiculously small; there's very little on the plates, which is a pity given the lovely setting. The taste doesn't live up to the menu description either. There's also a long wait.

Great restaurant with a view of Marseille and the beautiful sea. It's a shame they were out of ice, but we were able to order some very cold beers. ☀️

We received a warm welcome, and our reserved table on the rooftop was as agreed. The staff were both attentive and efficient. The food was carefully prepared and delicious. Despite the crowds due to the World Cup broadcast, we were served promptly. The value for money is excellent. The view of Menton is lovely. We will definitely return.

A rather mixed review. The rooftop is very pleasant, and the dishes are good, original, and beautifully presented. It's a shame the service is so chaotic. We arrived at 8 pm and left at 11 pm for a starter, a main course, and a dessert, with a 30-40 minute wait between each course. Adding to this was a rather bewildering organization: the wine was brought while we were still having our aperitifs, the aperitif glasses remained on the table throughout the meal, and we were served sliced bread instead. I also had to ask twice for water for my dog, and when it was finally brought to me, the response was: "Here you go, water for the mutt." So much for elegance and professionalism. It's a real shame because the food is excellent and the setting is very nice. But if you want to try it, plan your evening accordingly!

A pleasant dinner on the rooftop, superb view, modern cuisine and surprising flavors, a very nice discovery.

Absolutely loved their version of Eggs Royale with bursts instead of Hollandaise. On really crusty toast. Big and full of flavour! Great service too. And location. And received the water I asked for free of charge. Highly recommend.

We came for lunch and stayed to watch the F1 race. The food is absolutely amazing! We had the burrata salad, beef carpaccio, the Camembert dish and the ML Burger. Everything was absolutely delicious, 10/10!! We also had the Spaculoos cheesecake which was probably one of the best cheesecakes I’ve ver had. The personnel is very nice and the bathroom is clean. Highly recommend!

A very modest lounge near the sea, with joyful and polite staff. We ordered three cheese burgers, churos, coffee and Aperol spritz. Everything was fresh and delicious, especially the burgers, juicy and piquant ☀️🩷

What a great place - little bus ride from Menton (but beautiful moonlit walk back along the promenade). Small menu - but then you know its done right - wife had lamb rack with truffle pasta with pomegranite - she loved it!! I had the Angus entrecote cooked to perfection served on a warm plate (tres importante) with some great frites (maybe too many) and a local herb sauce - was brilliant. You have to try the lemon tiramasu - just glorious and of course the standard cognac and double espresso. The steak and lamb a little expensive but well worth the spoil. Hugely friendly and efficient serveuse who topped the evening with a smile.

A lovely place to eat. Great food. Lovely atmosphere. Very reasonably priced. Hostess was warm, friendly and made sure everyone felt special. On her own. Went twice in the week there it was that good though booking recommended.

Great steaks and lemon pie with friendly staff. Even the chef came to our table to check if everything was fine!

What a great little place. We didn’t book but were fortunately early enough to get one of the few remaining tables. As the restaurant filled, there was a lovely buzz of people enjoying their evening. The service was excellent with everyone attended to by one person who remained friendly and attentive despite being on the go non stop. The food was delicious and great value. We’re hoping to squeeze another visit in during our stay but will definitely reserve a table first.

Ate here twice in October 2024. Small menu. But what they served was nicely presented and good food. Escargot was really good. Not a big spot and not fancy but a great place for a tasty meal.

Okay, so, this might be the most incredible bar experience I've had in France. What a magnificent evening I had. The outdoor seating offered a great view of gorgeous Menton streets, the perfect setting for people watching. Staff were incredibly hospitable, and prices were reasonable. What really made the night was Christophe's beautiful singing, thank you so much Christophe!! Your rendition of Frank Sinatras 'My Way' was such a beautiful experience. If you want a bar experience with hospitality like no other, this is your spot!!

Came here for drinks during my stay in Menton, great little bar for drinks. Very Nice Staff too.

Great restaurant with good prices! Got a lunch for 11,50€ and a great portion as well. 100% recommend the Croque Poulet and the Club Poulet.

Good variety and plenty on the charcuterie board, the croque monsieur was also tasty. Cold drinks and coffee were excellent as well.

An amazing place with a perfect location. If you want to enjoy a beautiful sea view while having lunch, this is the place to be. The service was excellent as well. Highly recommended!

We had the pleasure of dining at Les Parasols in Menton, and the entire experience was nothing short of outstanding — from the first warm welcome to the last bite. The staff were phenomenal — specially Jerome- genuinely friendly, funny, and incredibly service-minded. They didn’t just serve food; they delivered hospitality with heart. You could tell they love what they do, and it shows. The food was delicious and full of flavor. We had the perfectly grilled fish with creamy risotto and vegetables, topped with fresh herbs and lemon — the seasoning was spot-on. The lasagna was rich, comforting, and indulgent, served with a crisp salad on the side. And the drinks? Bright, refreshing, and beautifully presented — exactly what you want on a sunny Riviera afternoon. A Seaside Gem with Heart, Humor, and Heavenly Food The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, with a sea breeze in the air and views that make you want to stay all day. Ideal for a romantic meal or a fun outing with friends. In short: Les Parasols isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience. Warm, delicious, and unforgettable. Highly recommended!
Stan H★★★★☆
Perfect location next to the beach with an amazing view. Let’s be honest, you are here for the view, not the food. The food was generally fine. One recommendation I have is they needed more staff. There were only 2 wait staff with over 20 tables. I just felt bad for them.
Rebecca Freemantle★★★★☆
Pleasant seafront cafe, we stopped for breakfast on a sunny morning. Good coverage of parasols for shade and comfy seats. Right next to the busy road which is a bit dusty/noisy but also has the beach on the other side. Coffee was nice and waffles were tasty. My parents had the set breakfast which they have often and said the bread in particular was wonderful. Bit out of town but was on our walk into town so well located for us.
Jonathan★★★★☆
The atmosphere gains a lot from close proximity to the ocean. The cocktails were well made, but the service was slow. We stood around and had to seat ourselves even after speaking to the server. It took 20 minutes after that for them to take our order.

Tips for Enjoying Rooftop Cafes in Menton

To make the most of your elevated dining experience, it is helpful to understand the local rhythms and climate. The Riviera sun can be intense, and the best tables are often highly sought after, especially during the high season. The following tips are designed to help you navigate the scene like a local, ensuring you secure the best seat in the house for your coffee or aperitif.

  1. Time Your Visit for the Golden Hour: The light in Menton is most spectacular just before sunset. Arrive at least an hour before the sun begins to dip to secure a west-facing table. This allows you to transition smoothly from a late afternoon coffee to an early evening aperitif as the town lights begin to twinkle.
  2. Look for the "Menton Lemon" Specialties: Many rooftops incorporate the region’s famous citrus into their menus. Always ask if they serve a "Spritz au Citron de Menton" or a lemon-infused pastry. It is a refreshing way to taste the local terroir while enjoying the view.
  3. Be Prepared for the Climb: Elevators are not a guarantee in Menton’s historic center. Many of the best terraces are accessed via steep staircases or narrow passages. Wear comfortable shoes and consider the climb a necessary prelude to the rewarding panorama.
  4. Reservations are Rare but Valuable: While many cafes operate on a first-come, first-served basis, those attached to hotels often reserve the front-row seats for guests. If you have your heart set on a specific location for a special occasion, call ahead or arrive at opening time to claim your spot.
  5. Check the Wind: The Mistral or maritime breezes can make rooftops chilly, even in the summer months. Bring a light layer or a scarf, as the microclimate on a high terrace can differ significantly from the sheltered streets below.
  6. Ask About the "Café Gourmand": If you are struggling to choose between desserts, many French cafes offer a "Café Gourmand." This is a coffee served with a selection of miniature desserts, perfect for pairing with a view and extending your stay without over-ordering.

The allure of Menton is found in these quiet, elevated moments where the pace of the Riviera slows down just enough for you to catch your breath. Choosing a rooftop cafe here is not merely about hydration or caffeine; it is about claiming a front-row seat to one of the most beautiful natural amphitheaters in Europe. The interplay of the Italianate architecture, the citrus groves, and the vast sea creates a backdrop that elevates even a simple glass of water into a memorable event.

As you descend back into the vibrant markets and lemon-scented streets, you carry with you a different perspective of the city. These terraces offer more than just a place to sit; they provide a moment of stillness above the fray, reminding you why Menton has inspired artists and travelers for centuries.
