15 Best Restaurants in Avignon

Nestled in the heart of Provence, Avignon is a city that seduces the senses long before you ever sit down at a table. Known globally for its medieval bridge and the imposing Palais des Papes, the city offers a culinary landscape as rich and textured as its history.

While many visitors come for the theater festival or the UNESCO World Heritage sites, they often stay for the food. The local cuisine is a celebration of Provençal sunshine, olive oil, and the deep, earthy flavors of the Rhône Valley.

From bustling market squares to hidden cobblestone alleyways, dining in Avignon is an experience of discovery. You can find everything from rustic bistros serving hearty daube stew to Michelin-starred temples of gastronomy pushing modern French cuisine forward.

The city’s location is a gift to chefs, providing access to incredible produce from the surrounding countryside. Truffles from Vaucluse, lamb from the Alpilles, and the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are all just a short drive away.

Understanding the local dining culture is key to enjoying your visit. Lunch is often a leisurely affair, and dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM, with reservations highly recommended, especially during the summer festival season.

Whether you are looking for a romantic terrace overlooking the Place de l’Horloge or a casual spot to grab a glass of Côtes du Rhône, Avignon has a table for you. To help you navigate the scene, we have curated a list of the best dining establishments the city has to offer.

What a find! Very hospitable staff. Top notch food at reasonable prices. Wonderful wines by the glass. cucumber and feta gazpacho Dish that I cannot recall, but seriously looks awesome right? Arugula and tomato and something. Sorry can't recall. Iberian pork with passion fruit was a treat! So soft, so tasty. Could take bites and sip wine all day. The bread was amazing - get it! Just a wonderful experience. Wish I could describe the dishes better or more precisely. I remember saying that this was an excellent meal and at the price we felt like we robbed the place.

*** Highlights: “The cutest restaurant ever” - my wife *** What we liked: The Magret de Canard and the Fish are absolutely sensational - how do they make these dishes so well executed? The apricot tart is homemade *** Recommended? It’s a very nice spot located center of Avignon. They offer several menus varying between 27-45€. The service is very polite, the food is impressive and the presentation is spot on. Will return and recommend

Excellent service. Did not feel rushed. Lovely wine selection. The food was prepared with devotion, and a master of the culinary craft. I am celiaque, and the staff was knowledgeable and accommodated via modification where needed. The complexity and creativity in our meals was very appreciated. Merci!

Food is above average - value for money, but not super nice. Tried two 3-course set in Avenio menu - both starter and main dish are below expectation, dessert is good. Service is missing. Waiting too long between courses (not even a full house), feel ignored. No AC, very hot indoor. Overall, it’s still a nice local restaurant, but not worths the Michelin gourmand.
Laurie Simone★★★★★
There is a reason this restaurant has been Michelin rated every year. The food and presentation are fantastic. A unique combination of flavors makes each plate so delicious. Desserts combine herbs and fruits. The restaurant itself is very inviting and the staff are excellent. They speak English fluently as well.

We stopped in at Le Carré du Palais by accident, as we were passing by on a hot day. We were not that hungry but shared a risotto dish and had a couple of cold beer. The food tasted so good, and what we saw being sent to the nearby tables looked so awesome that we booked a dinner reservation for that night. Returned at 7:30, sat on the same terrace in front of the Palace of the Popes, and had an absolutely astounding meal. Service was great, and the pace of the evening was relaxed. Highly recommend this restaurant.

The dessert — Fraîcheur Meringuée Citron et Yuzu🍋‍🟩— was the undisputed star of the entire meal. A lemon sauce base at the bottom, a caramelized sugar shell with a satisfying crack, a molten yuzu center that flows out when you break through, and on top, what looks like whipped cream but turns out to be a cool, airy meringue frost hiding underneath. Delicate, complex, and genuinely unlike anything I’ve had before. I left a convert to French pâtisserie for life. The starter, Foie Gras mi-cuit with Cévennes onion and raspberry condiment, was decent. I expected that signature silky, almost gelatinous texture, but this leaned drier and more terrine-like. The flavor was right, just not the mouthfeel I was hoping for. And then there was the main. The Agneau de Provence en Deux Façons itself was forgettable, but the mashed potato deserves its own paragraph. The chef, seemingly determined to honor the spice trade routes of the Mediterranean, appears to have built the purée around a generous hand of cumin and coriander — the same aromatic backbone of South Asian cooking — and finished it with rendered lamb fat instead of butter, which coats the palate in a way that lingers long after the last bite. The result is a dish that tastes, with startling precision, less like Provence and more like a Pakistani kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. First bite: confusion. Second bite: genuine regret. Technically explainable. Spiritually unforgettable.🤮Also the portion was so small. At €49, it feels steep for Avignon, though the location next to the cathedral is lovely. The service was a little bit rude. 5 stars, entirely for the dessert.
Mark Brumbaugh★★★★★
A must visit restaurant in Avignon. Fantastic service and even better meal! The chicken dish and the lamb were superb. Go with the wine selections recommended for each dish. Do Not pass on the deserts. Wonderful presentation of all dishes and a very friendly and helpful staff! A+!!

This restaurant uses its perfect location to attract. But from the first moment all looks like global food network restaurant. Noisy. Waiting for seating even you have reservation. Nobody asks where do you want to be seated. Long waiting for waiter. All the time long waiting time. And noisy like in the pub. Food average. But rather poor. Cold foil gras from the can was not something I expected. Fist was cold and sauces and pure was not good. Winelist OK but only 2025 and 2024 vintages by the glass. For tourists not foodies
Luz Colina★☆☆☆☆
The location and views are definitely the highlight of Café du Palais. It’s a beautiful setting and a very nice place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere in Avignon. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the surroundings. We felt the quality was quite poor. With such a wonderful setting and view, this place has so much potential. If they improved the quality and preparation of the food, it could be a truly great experience.

Charming restaurant! Our chicken dish with rice, olives & vegetables in a not too rich lemon sauce was exceptional. A white wine that was suggested paired perfectly. When in Avignon, I would make this the first stop when looking for a neighborhood authentic French restaurant.

I don’t want to be dramatic, but the eggplant dish is a life changer. I don’t know how we stumbled onto this germ, but I am so glad we did. I haven’t even gotten the main course yet, but I had to share my review because I would come here just for this dish alone!

We were walking down one of the main streets in central Avignon and came across this tucked away chic gem where we were greeted warmly. The food was very flavorful with a unique Avignon flare. Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting this beautiful town!

Dinner at this restaurant was our most pleasant experience in Avignon. It beats by far our Michelin stars dinning experiences. The decor is so original and beautiful. The owner the most wonderful person ever. And the food it is just to die for. The portions are big and divine. I am speechless and I only wish they would relocate closer to our home so that we could enjoy them more often - and try absolutely everything from the Menu. Chapeau Madame!
Graeme V★★★★★
A small out of the way restaurant which is worth visiting at least once. The food is rich in flavour and texture. On a summer night, the ambience is inviting and relaxing. The hostess is a character, whom made it the highlight of our trip. Plan for a 7pm dinner and you won’t be disappointed.

I rarely write reviews, but I feel compelled to speak up because this experience left a bitter taste that had nothing to do with the food. This was my second-to-last night in France and this restaurant managed to overshadow it entirely. We had a 7:30pm reservation. The indoor seating felt suffocating, so we asked to move outside. That part went fine. What followed did not. We ordered at 7:40pm and then simply... waited. Forty minutes passed. Then an hour. No starter, no explanation, no acknowledgment. What made it truly infuriating was watching a table that arrived 20 minutes after us receive their food first. I couldn't help but wonder — was it because we're Asian tourists? I genuinely don't know, but the thought shouldn't even have to cross my mind. When I finally raised the issue, visibly upset, the waiter's idea of an apology was to offer a single glass of wine — for a table of two. I don't know whether to call it an afterthought or an insult, but it only made things worse. We were assured the rest of our meal was coming. Another 30 minutes later, our lamb and steak arrived. The steak we ordered medium came out medium rare at best. At that point, it almost didn't matter. We had plans after dinner. We had a timeline. What we didn't have was two hours to sit and be ignored. The food was mediocre at best, but the dismissiveness was what truly ruined the evening.
Linda Čížková★★★★★
Visiting this restaurant will forever remain one of the best experiences of our holiday in Provence! At first glance, it may look like a simple spot, but with its beautiful seating on the square under the trees, it is absolutely worth a visit. The food was simply beyond words – creative dishes with unique flavor combinations, absolutely amazing! The staff were very kind and welcoming. We loved it so much that we couldn’t resist coming back three evenings in a row.

Great food and fab alfresco setting on a picturesque bustling square. Service was friendly. Great food menu featuring seasonal ingredients like figs, and fresh seafood. Very atmospheric and lovely.

A good restaurant but portion sizes could be big but fresh food . I went there when there was one chef and one waiter . The chef didn’t cut corners prepared fresh and handled the crowd beautifully. Keep cooking. I can see the passion.

The most delightful dining experience in my last month of traveling around France. Booked in with Fou de Fafa for all three nights of my stay in Avignon which gave me the opportunity to try every dish on the menu. The restaurant is small and intimate, the attention to details by both the chef and Antonia is top notch - done with both flair and imagination. Fou de Fafa is a creative place that takes one to a bygone era and a dining journey that I was grateful to experience. Merci beaucoup xx

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Absolute Gem in Avignon – Better Than NYC Michelin Star Dining! If you are visiting Avignon, you must eat here. Coming from New York, where we routinely pay five times more for Michelin-starred meals, I can tell you that the experience at Fa da do easily competes with, if not surpasses, those high-end spots. You simply cannot compare the incredible value and sheer talent here. This beautiful, family-run restaurant is operated by an incredibly charming husband-and-wife team. The entire place exudes warmth, making it an absolute pleasure to dine here from start to finish. The food is deeply intentional, showcasing fresh, peak-season ingredients with masterfully executed techniques. Every dish felt like a celebration of the season: • The Starters: We started with the trout tartare, which was frankly better than Nobu. Fresh, perfectly balanced, and brilliant. My friend had the spring pea soup, which was vibrant, velvety, and served with incredibly flavorful toasted chorizo croutons that added the perfect crunch and spice. • The Mains: The lamb was an absolute standout—perfectly cooked and paired with a rich, deeply flavorful sauce reduction. We also tried the duck, which featured a unique strawberry balsamic combination. It sounds adventurous, but the flavor profile worked so beautifully and harmoniously. • The Desserts: Absolute heaven. We tried a seasonal fresh strawberry dessert over the lightest, most delicate cheesecake base imaginable. We also couldn't resist their signature caramel and banana dessert, which was rich, delicious, and the perfect sweet ending to an unforgettable night. This is Michelin-quality food served with genuine heart, soul, and local charm. Do not miss this place while you are in Avignon!

Can't recommend this restaurant enough, I visited here for celebrating my parents wedding anniversary and we had an amazing experience. We all tasted different main courses and desserts and all were sublime. Apart from the food, also an important note to share; Antonia is a great host, you can easily say that she enjoys a lot while working which also keeps the customers happy and I'm sure once you visit Fou de Fafa, you'll be back when you're in Avignon again. Thanks a lot!

Best gazpacho soup I’ve ever had!! We booked a table in advance as this restaurants gets booked out quickly. The service is very attentive and I believe she’s the owner. Very calm and friendly, the atmosphere is soft and comfy. Highly recommending this restaurant.

I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at Fou de Fafa. From the moment I arrived, the service was exceptional. My server was incredibly warm, kind, attentive, and carried such beautiful energy that it elevated the entire evening. She made me feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. I enjoyed the three-course menu and every dish was outstanding. I began with the asparagus and fresh goat cheese starter, followed by the saddle of lamb, which was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. For dessert, I had the banoffee pie with an espresso - the perfect ending to a memorable meal. What I especially loved was the clear focus on fresh, local ingredients, which made everything feel authentic and thoughtfully prepared. Every course was beautifully executed, and the entire experience felt special from start to finish. If you are visiting Avignon and want incredible food paired with truly heartfelt hospitality, I highly recommend this restaurant. A highlight of my time here.

After a wonderful day spent with my partner in Avignon, I couldn't think of a better place to enjoy dinner. The restaurant offers a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes for a truly enjoyable dining experience. The food was exceptional—freshly prepared, beautifully presented, full of flavour, and perfectly balanced. I would highly recommend trying one of their specialties, as the quality of the cuisine was outstanding. The service was equally impressive, with the staff being incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. We were served almost immediately, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The only minor confusion was understanding the ordering process, but that was entirely my own oversight and certainly did not detract from the overall experience. Considering the excellent food, outstanding service, and inviting atmosphere, L'ardoise offers exceptional value for money. I would gladly return the next time I am in Avignon and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

We passing by found this place by accident and after enjoyed our delightful lunch and realised it was on our restaurants map that our guest house host provided to us. We originally just plan to have a quick drink , but end up had the best Comamlnbert for lunch... Definitely recommend here for youreal if you visit Avignon.

Absolutely incredible! Everything was perfect. We got 2 of their lunch special plates (goat cheese & fig ravioli and veal tartare) and they were both delicious 😋 the lunch special deal is out of this world! We each got one of those dishes, a glass of house wine, and a desert for 16 euros each 🤯 staff is super friendly and provided excellent and timely service. We sat outside and it was a great ambiance. Literally one of the best meal experiences of my life, dollar for dollar.

Our table of 6 was taken care of by a lovely woman who was tending to the entire restaurant the night we stopped by. The food was delicious and everyone left with happy, full bellies.

The service was very attentive and friendly — our server recommended delicious wines that paired perfectly with our meal. The spicy sardines with bread were fantastic, and the snails were a great choice too. I had the seafood plate, which was good overall, though I found the variety of seafood a bit much for my taste. Everything else was wonderful.
yninita★★★★☆
What I loved: 1. Wine selection: Even though I ordered wine by the glass, they kindly let me taste before choosing. 2. Flexibility with food orders: They offer the usual starter–main course menu, but since we wanted to enjoy wine in a more tapas-style way, we ordered several starters instead. They happily accommodated this without any issue. 3. Hudson, the very well-behaved golden retriever, stayed nearby all evening and added so much warmth to the atmosphere. It was a truly lovely evening.
Andrew Thompson★★★★★
Amazing! For food and service I can’t recommend enough. The staff were very attentive, friendly and also knowledgeable on the most complimentary wine for each dish. One of the best meals I’ve had in a while, very reasonable price given the quality and presentation, they didn’t push us to spend more and didn’t even charge for service - definitely deserving of a tip.
James Howard★★★★★
Very relaxed but attentive service. If i lived in Avignon I could easily call this my go-to restaurant. My first experience with escargot in France - they were wonderful. American restaurants (even fine dining venues) tend to smother them with garlic & oil. These were much more gently seasoned & full of complex flavors - truly delicious!
Lochana★★★★☆
Service was good, even though they forgot our wine orders it was rectified quickly. The pork main dish was delicious and was super enjoyable. The flavours of the duck also stood out! We enjoyed our escargots and frogs legs starters too and finished off with the apricot tart and praline dessert both of which were amazing. Would 100% return to eat it all again (especially the pork!)

A fabulous meal - the best of our stay in Avignon. Inventive, delicous food, with clever adaptations to my no seafood preference. We had the 5 course menu plus cheese, and we're delighted by every one. Excellent wine pairings too, and smooth, friendly service. At this level, it's really hard to find fault, so I'll just mention a couple of things that might have been slightly better. The amuse bouche took a while to arrive (but after that, the flow was great). the first wine was described as "crisp" but wasn't very (it was quite nice all the same). The sauce on the meat course could have been less salty, to compensate for the olives in it. But these are nits. It was a superb evening.
Johan Erkers★★★★★
We spent an excellent evening. We went for the large menu, and the extra cheese. In the end it was a bit too much food. Pro tip, skip the cheese if you go for the large menu. Everything was excellent. Flavors on point and well calibrated. Amuse bouche with exciting flavors and textures. The asparagus with hazelnuts was my favorit. The black angus with endive my least favorite. Chef seem to like bitter notes as they were often there. Not in a bad way, only an observation. Service was flawless, friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. All dishes were explained well. All in all - a very good experience.
Sila★★★★★
We had a great experience at Pollen. The service was impeccable, and we loved the ambiance. Every dish was flawlessly executed, with the wine pairings standing out—special thanks to the sommelier. I'd happily return if back in the area.
Jason Shafer★★★★★
Absolutely amazing! Everything about this experience was phenomenal. We went for my husband's birthday and it lived up to all our expectations. The food was incredible - bursting with flavor and thoughtful. The service really amazed me, though. We told our host that we had to leave by 22:45 to catch a train, and he was able to completely change the timing of our courses to get us done early, by 22:30. It made us enjoy the experience even more deeply. Truly one of the most memorable meals we have ever had. Highest recommendation!!!!
Mary Keating★★★★★
We were gifted 2 carte blanche vouchers... we decided to go for lunch and didn't really know what to expect! The website booking would only accept one voucher but the hostess had done her homework and on arrival mentioned that both vouchers could be used. A fantastic experience, fabulous staff and outstanding seasonal food and lovely (local) wine pairing. An absolute pleasure!! Great to see kitchen from dining room. Staff deserve an extra shoutout, so professional but still very approachable. Would definitely recommend !!

Love it. When visiting new places, I make it a point to try and find local favorites instead of tourist traps. No English in the menu, which gets be sometimes but it's a fun experience. Here, the service is great! The bartender was super friendly and spoke English to give recommendations. Our waitress only spoke French but was patient with our trying to pronounce and translate. The food was enjoyable and the prices reasonable. The escargot are so good! Same for the gnocci...Amazing. There were a few things I didn't love but I could tell it's due to personal taste as it was obvious everything was well prepared. 5/5
Elaine Vuong★★★★★
Excellent escargot and scallops, which were the highlights of the meal. The veal was slightly overcooked but still tender and served with a lovely caramel sauce. The Spider Pork was also very good. The set menu was very reasonably priced, making this a great-value meal overall. The only downside was that the food took a little while to come out. If dining outside for dinner, definitely ask for the bug spray—the restaurant has some available, which was a nice touch. Would recommend and would happily come back!

"I come from Taiwan. This restaurant far exceeded my expectations. The pork chop gnocchi, lasagna, and fish ball egg rice were absolutely amazing. I was so deeply moved by the food that I just had to express my highest compliments to the chef."

Authentic atmosphere and amazing food! We had a wonderful Friday dinner here. The restaurant was buzzing with locals, creating a fantastic and lively atmosphere. Food: The 39€ Menu is a great deal. The Escargots were fun to try (it takes a little skill!), and the Mitonnée de Joues de Cochon was incredibly tender and flavorful—reminded me of a premium version of a Korean braised dish. My son loved it too! Wine: A glass of Côtes du Rhône was the perfect pairing for the meal. Everything was perfect for a family dinner in Avignon. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a real local gem. C'était délicieux!

Local, relaxed, reasonably priced, delicious meal. We had escargot, scallops, veal, pork spider, pork cheek. Stand out was escargot and veal. Highly recommend!

This was an incredible experience! We were warmly invited to sit, encouraged to enjoy the sun, and informed of options that were available but weren’t on the menu. Our host was so kind and lovely, as well as especially patient and helpful as we practiced our French, all while taking excellent care of us. The food was fantastic and we were thrilled at the atmosphere of sitting outside, watching people interact, and enjoying the perfect Provençal day! Many thanks to Chez Nine. 💙

We had a great lunch at Chez Nine. It’s small, quirky and cozy. It was a bit crowded but they made sure to accommodate our group of 5. I ordered the Planche Nine and it was super tasty! In addition, I would like to highlight their help and flexibility to ensure our friend with milk protein allergy also had a great meal! Definitely recommend!
Mark Mc Laughlin★★★★★
Chez Nine is the type of local restaurant you always dream to find when visiting a new town. The food is like eating in a chef's home kitchen with everything cooked from scratch and the menu changes daily. Nine and her mum couldn't have been more kind. We had the best salad with local and fresh ingredients, incredible omelette and our daughter had a french style pizza that she loved. If coming from the main train station avoid the touristy restaurants before Palais des Papes and take a right and is a 2-3 minute walk. Nine and her mum gave us the best tip to go the jardins and then up on to the hill with the best view of the city and the Pont d'Avignon. Couldn't recommend this restaurant highly enough and can't wait to go back.

One of the best meals we’ve had in Avignon - simple 3 course menu and all the dishes were so sophisticated and full of different, complex flavors and textures. Particularly loved the mains of lobster and lamb. The service was also impeccable and we received very good recommendations for wines to pair with our food. We will be back for sure!

I would not recommend this restaurant. As soon as we arrived, the waiter had an attitude towards us (maybe bc we're american? maybe bc we had a 5 year old in tow which they assured us over the phone would be fine??). We had looked at the website online but didn't realize it was a prix fixe (this was 100% our mistake, maybe a language barrier?) and the menu example we saw online showed a lot more options. On the night we were there, they had ONE option for starter, for meal they had one fish, one meat, or one vegetarian option. This is not what we had in mind at all. We explained the situation to our waiter and he said he would charge us 150 euro if we wanted to leave. I completely understand this policy for no-shows bc restaurants need to fill their tables to make money. This was a genuine misunderstanding (there was another whole issue with their reservation system that I won't get into....). The waiter was so condescending in the way he repeatedly told us their policies. I then caught him sending back our first course (a 'surprise' appetizer spread from the chef that I saw other tables getting), telling the server that we wouldnt be eating that (he didn't know I understand some French). I told him that was flat out rude. If we were stuck paying for this experience, we should atleast get the full experience.... Now. I expected after all of that well OK at least the food should be good. But it wasn't??? The best thing we ate by far was the 'surprise' appetizers that he eventually did bring out. The entrees were so underwhelming. Part of the dessert was literally a strawberry in a bowl (Im sure something fancy had been done to it but it tasted... like a strawberry). I will say I appreciated that they hurried the meal along (because we had a 5 year old with us, we couldn't sit there for hours) and I also appreciated the fact that they had a kids meal. That being said, perhaps the fact that they have a kids meal is what made is think this establishment might be something that its not. Incredibly disappointing experience overall.

I enjoyed eating at a restaurant that challenged my perception of flavor combinations. I also loved the quality treatment of the raw ingredients. And the fact that each dish was accompanied by one vegetable in different ways of treatment, which gave excellent results for each dish. It was delicious, amazing, special and indulgent. The service was excellent, the wine was delicious and we had an unforgettable evening. And from here I let the pictures do the talking…

This was the best meal we’ve had during our 2 1/2 weeks in France. Every bite of every course was an explosion of flavors and full of interesting textures. For our starter, we chose the Perfect Egg and it was delicious. We both had the lobster and it was delicate yet rich at the same time. The atmosphere was elegant, but not snobby at all.

An exceptional restaurant. We opted for the six-course tasting menu with wine pairings. There were several “wow” moments. Overall it was superior to many Michelin-starred restaurants we’ve visited, and a relative bargain for the price. The staff is lovely as well.

A really great experience. Lovely atmosphere, really friendly staff and tasty food. Great choice of gluten free options (and other allergens) with a dedicated allergens list if you ask the waiting staff. Highly recommend.

Very friendly staff and lovely chique interior decor. I had the burgundy snails, couer de rumsteak and the biscoff tiramisu, all were delicious. Highly recommend!

We ate outside on the terrace which was lovely - the inside looks so cozy, too! Our drinks (mojitos) were made well, neither too light nor heavy on the alcohol. We ordered the planche Italienne (delicious, except the toasted bread seemed a bit stale) and the scallop risotto (heavenly!). Service was a little bit slow, but very friendly. Would recommend!

The food was actually fairly good but the service was terrible. Also we were seated at a dirty table (my elbows and my napkin stuck to it) next to piles of plastic bottle crates and other bar paraphernalia. The waiting staff were amateur at best - cleared our table to clean it when we complained that it was dirty, and then forgot to replace the glasses and bread basket, whisked the bread basket away when still half full, offered us a sweet before main course was served, no soap or towels in the toilet, took such a long time to take out order in the first place that we nearly walked out… I kind of wished we had now as the €80 bill did not reflect the experience. In a nutshell, it seemed to us like it was the manager’s night off and there was no one looking after quality.

Best location, best food, best service. Our group of seven had every plate and each house wine. Lovely and tasty. I especially enjoyed the duck. Find this place and go.

A hidden gem, not to be missed when visiting Avignon! All our dishes prepared in perfection with reasonable price❣️. Lovely intimate setting right next to Saint Pierre church🤩

A cute, rustic little French restaurant in the middle of a small square next to the old St Peter’s cathedral in Avignon’s old town, only a few minutes’ walk from the Pope’s Palace. Service was very friendly. The food was Excellent. We had the L'Épicerie plate, which was a surprisingly filling salad with various little dishes to sample, and the steak with potato gratin and vegetables, both very good. The cheesecake dessert was artfully plated and also very good. Overall a great place to eat when visiting Avignon.

Enjoyed a lovely dinner here a few weeks ago (8 June) as we sat in a peaceful courtyard in front of the Basilica St. Pierre. Even though we did not have a reservation (and the place was nearly full), the owner graciously arranged a nice table for 2. Our dinners, from a small focused menu, were fresh, flavorful, thoughtfully presented, and of course...delicious. Paired with a nice bottle of chardonnay simply added to a delightful evening. Highly recommend having dinner at this gem. You will not be disappointed. Reservations recommended.

Atmosphere is great, we had our dinner outdoor just in front of the church facade. Service is quick and kind. The food is good, well served. I had higher expectations on the quality and the available choices that I found a bit limited. All in all a great place to be to live the Avignon scene.

We had a wonderful lunch here. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, the decor was charming and unique, and the staff were warm and welcoming throughout. Highly recommended!

Probably our best meal in France so far! The cabbage salad with calamari was fresh and well balanced, with very tender calamari, and the escargot was excellent. The beef stew was rich and full of depth, and the veal was extremely tender, perfectly cooked, and surprisingly light. Desserts were good, though the savory dishes were the highlight. Feels like elevated home cooking with real attention to flavor and execution. I’d gladly come back next time in Avignon.

The restaurant locates in the old town near historical places of the city. Staffs are nice and careful. We visited at lunch offering 3 courses menu. Appetizer, main menu and dessert are all great. My parents who aren't familiar with french foods also enjoyed the meal joyfully.

This place is a jam! We went 3 times and had a great experience on each of them. The chef also serves you your food, a one man show that looks effortless. I highly recommend this restaurant.

EAT is tucked away in a little alley. Be on the look out or you'll miss it. It's small and simply decorated. The menu is also small and changes with the seasons and availability. If you have food allergies call ahead and ask. The steak and smoked salmon were the 2 favorites at the table. The salmon is smoked in house and is terrific. They have some nice wines available. EAT is a little pricey. About 100 Euros for 2 including a bottle of wine, but no dessert.

Wonderful restaurant to stop by when you’re in Avignon! The food was magnificent. There are about 4-6 selections for each course (you can decide how many courses to take) and each dish is made from carefully selected local ingredients. The service was friendly and comfortable. We absolutely loved the vibe of the simple clean atmosphere. Thank you!
Tiffany C★★★☆☆
The staff is very friendly and I always found this place bustling with diners. With that said, I was a bit disappointed with the food. My starter was the stuffed zucchini with basil and sardines, it was fine. For my entree, I had the tagliatelle with dried fruit and it was very bland. I had high hopes for this place after reading the glowing reviews but it didn't live up to my expectations.

The best experience in 2 weeks in France. Very reasonable prices and EXCELLENT good. Beef stew and fish soup/stew both devine.

Practical Tips for Dining in Avignon

Navigating the restaurant scene in this Provençal city is easy if you know a few local customs and tricks. While the quality of food is generally high, knowing when and where to eat can elevate your experience from good to unforgettable. Here are some essential tips to help you dine like a local and make the most of your culinary budget.

1. Embrace the "Formule" at Lunch
If you want to experience high-end dining without the high-end price tag, book your main meal at lunchtime. Most upscale restaurants offer a "formule" or "prix fixe" menu during the day that is significantly cheaper than the evening à la carte options. It is the smartest way to taste Michelin-level cooking on a budget.

2. Book Ahead for the Festival Season
If you are visiting in July during the Festival d’Avignon, spontaneity is not your friend. The city’s population swells, and the best tables are booked out weeks in advance. Always call ahead or use online reservation platforms to secure a spot, particularly for dinner after the evening theater performances.

3. Look for "Fait Maison"
To avoid tourist traps serving reheated industrial food, look for the "fait maison" (homemade) logo or text on menus. This designation is legally protected in France and guarantees that the dishes are prepared from scratch on the premises using raw ingredients.

4. Mind the Service Hours
Avignon, like much of France, runs on a strict dining clock. Kitchens typically close between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. If you miss the lunch window, you will likely be limited to cafés or bakeries for a snack. Plan your sightseeing around these times so you don’t go hungry in the late afternoon.

5. Order the Local Rhône Wines
Skip the generic Bordeaux and ask for a local bottle. The Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations are world-class and often priced better here than anywhere else in the world. Sommeliers in Avignon are usually passionate about local terroir and can recommend a perfect pairing for Provençal dishes.

6. Know the Difference Between a Bistro and a Restaurant
A "bistro" or "brasserie" usually offers continuous service, a more casual atmosphere, and classic comfort food like steak frites or duck confit. A "restaurant gastronomique" is a formal, reservation-heavy experience with a longer, multi-course format. Decide which vibe suits your day before you set out.

Avignon is more than just a stop on a Provençal tour; it is a destination where food tells the story of the land. The scent of herbs de Provence drifting from a kitchen window or the sight of a perfectly roasted leg of lamb being carved tableside are memories that linger long after you leave.

Take your time, wander off the main squares, and let your palate explore the rich traditions of the Rhône Valley. With a little planning and an adventurous spirit, you will discover why this historic city is considered one of the true gastronomic capitals of southern France.
