Reasonable price. Lovely art. All information guides are supposed to be in different languages but they didn't have any in stock left. all empty. so only French information guides everywhere. Would have gotten 5 stars but the town was in a heatwave and the museum was boiling hot. They had huge portable air conditioners but didn't have them switched on. We bought our tickets then tried to show them to ticket collector (scrolling and playing games on her phone) and she waved us in. They a few mins later she chased us down in the gallery shouting 'excuse me excuse me ticket ticket' which was embarrassingwith people all around, and we showed our tickets to her a second time. Maybe if the employees paid attention and didn't play on their phone all day it would have avoided the problem. Great art. Poor management.

Very nice museum with lots of paintings made in Honfleur. I highly recommend visiting the town before visiting the museum. It is quite fun to see paintings of places you have just visited

The collections at this art museum feature world class pieces by well known impressionist painters. They also have a chapel that hosts events from time to time. The amount of work at this museum is fairly small, so it shouldn’t take long to see it all (it took me about 30 minutes).

Interesting and varied collection of art. I did like to see earlier paintings depicting Honfleur at different times in its past. I also downloaded the music playlist as I entered picture gallery and used it as a very pleasant musical back ground as I perused the gallery. One of my favourite pieces was on entering

A beautiful museum tugged in a serene neighborhood. Love their caredully curated impressionist paintings and drawings

A little tiny gem in Normandy. As a musician, this was a central and important spot to visit. Whether you appreciate the magical spice of Satie's music, or not, his music is an incredible testament of its time, of pushing of cultural and religious boundaries. We played the Satie driving up to Honfleur and away from it. It was a gorgeous soundtrack to our visit.

Sorry, I did not understood the exhibit. It was very strange experience based on the surrealism and the music. Maybe if I knew nothing about Satie or If I knew everything about Satie I would have enjoyed it more

This museum is a very interesting and artistic mix between modern art, contemporary art, original historic pieces (like documents, letters and objects), music and only lastly: information. It is like walking through a scrapbook of the thoughts and works of the composer.
Artists did a good job capturing the personality of the eccentric, maverick and influential artist Erik Satie in the museum's strange visuals, its off-beat presentation and historical facts and artifacts in a very unconventional way. The visitor is shown and told (partly using a clever audio guide system that activates when pointing at something) fragments of the lifetime of the composer while walking through a surreal set of chambers, each filled with all sorts of art, original pieces and of course: Satie's music. Some highlights are: a peculiar collection of umbrellas and unopened letters, a room with a host of original manuscripts and artifacts (presented on thin sticks in the middle of a room), a strange merry-go-round contraption that visitors need to physically activate themselves to "encircle the music") and a player piano that plays Satie's three Gnossienes in a minimalistic empty room.
This having been a 'regular' museum would not have done the composer justice, and the artists who created this Maisons Satie museum did an excellent job. It would do the visitor a world of good though, to first look up some information on the life and works of Erik Satie to fully understand the atmosphere of this place, as 'explanation' does not seem to have been the main purpose.

More of an experience than a museum, but definitely an interesting experience. Wear the receiver around your neck, plug in your earbuds, and stop moving whenever you hear music or words. Each room, sometimes multiple locations in the room, or even objects in the room will trigger a Satie commentary, an appropriate Satie musical clip, or both.
It is by turns serious, whimsical, surreal, or macabre. I learned that Satie did waltzes, marches, and operas as well as the more familiar and contemplative pieces. Mostly, though, I was just entertained.

Very different museum. The entrance door is very stiff and you need to push down very hard on the handle to get in , tbh we were at the point of giving up when someone opened the door from the inside.
We booked a bus called Bee le harve which took us from Le Harve to Honfluer for 19 Euros return, an excellent service and so much cheaper than MSC cruise prices.
Some of the automation was not working so we were offered a half price entry.
Honfluer is the most beautiful town we have ever visited in France. Wonderful medieval building as is this museum.
Many shops museums etc close for lunch 12-2 ish

You have to get a ticket at the old church first, and look round the model boats in that lovely space. Then you go across to the old prison. The prison is really just a small part, you then go up into the old house that has period clothing, fireplaces, and my highlight an early printing press!
Duncan Epping★★★★★
Cool tiny place. Worth a quick visit if you are in Honfleur.

I found this museum authentic and incredibly interesting. It gives you a very personal and up close feeling of how people lived. Totally worth the effort. The tiny prison behind was fascinating as well.

Very unfriendly woman at the reception. I came in with my two kids in a buggy on a rainy day but she seemed not to want to let us see the museum from the start. First she said no buggy's, so I replied ok can I leave it here? Than she said there are stairs, I said that's fine the kids can walk. She continued to note that they would close in half an hour, I told her I knew and we might come back when they re-open in the afternoon if we need more time. I asked what the price was for the tickets and she reluctantly told me but it turns out we could not pay by card and I didn't have enough cash. I tried to ask were the nearest cash withdrawal was but at this point she stopped taking to me altogether and just started talking to someone else, so I never got to see the museum.

Only open June-August. Google opening times were wrong!
Not an un-interesting walk there though.

Talked for ages with the owner, very knowledgeable and interesting. The museum is well worth a visit, but there are so many in Normandy to see and Honfleur has so many other attractions.

Can only go inside during summer months. But it's still pretty cool from the outside.

I discovered the Blockhaus while dog-walking and was invited in. It is a wonderful collection of all things Second World War and definitely worth a visit.
Tips for Visiting Museums in Honfleur
To make the most of your cultural itinerary in this bustling port town, a little preparation goes a long way. While Honfleur is compact and highly walkable, the popularity of its historic center means that navigating attractions requires a bit of strategy. Here are five essential tips to ensure your museum visits are smooth, enriching, and memorable.
1. Verify Seasonal Opening Hours
Unlike major metropolitan museums, many of Honfleur’s cultural sites operate on a seasonal schedule. While the summer months generally offer extended hours and daily access, many smaller museums and historic houses close for several weeks during January and February for maintenance. Additionally, some venues may close on Tuesdays or during the lunch hour. Always check the official website or a recent local tourism brochure the day before your visit to avoid disappointment.
2. Purchase the Honfleur Pass
If you plan to visit three or more major attractions—including museums, the Naturospace, or the tourist train—look into the city’s bundled ticket options. The local tourism office often sells a "Honfleur Pass" that provides significant discounts on combined entries. This is particularly valuable for families or couples staying for a weekend, as it allows you to pop in and out of venues without worrying about individual ticket costs adding up.
3. Time Your Visit to Avoid Cruise Crowds
Honfleur is a favored stop for river cruises and day-trippers from Paris. The historic center, particularly around the Eugène Boudin Museum and the Maritime Museum, can become congested between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. For a more contemplative experience, visit the most popular museums right when they open in the morning, or opt for a late afternoon visit when the tour buses have departed and the light begins to soften over the harbor.
4. Combine Indoor and Outdoor Stops
The weather in Normandy can shift rapidly. To avoid "museum fatigue," structure your day by alternating between indoor cultural stops and outdoor landmarks. For example, visit the Erik Satie House in the morning, then walk the length of the Vieux Bassin to see the Lieutenance, and later duck into the Maritime Museum if a shower passes through. This rhythm allows you to appreciate the town’s aesthetic context while keeping dry and comfortable.
5. Wear Comfortable, Non-Slip Shoes
Honfleur’s charm comes with a practical challenge: uneven cobblestones. Many of the historic buildings housing these museums have steep, narrow staircases and original stone floors that can be slippery when wet. Leave the high heels or slick-soled dress shoes at the hotel. Opt for supportive footwear with good grip to navigate the old stairwells of the lofts and the gangways of museum ships safely.
Exploring the museums of Honfleur offers a profound connection to the town’s dual identity as both a fishing village and an artistic haven. The collections here are intimate, often housed in structures that are artifacts in their own right, allowing you to feel the weight of history in a way that larger, modern galleries rarely achieve.
As you wander from the quays to the quiet side streets, let the art of Boudin, the eccentricity of Satie, and the bravery of the local sailors guide your journey. These institutions do more than display objects; they keep the heartbeat of Honfleur alive for generations of travelers to discover.
