12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Honfleur

Honfleur’s cobbled lanes, timber-framed facades, and bustling Vieux Bassin have long made it one of Normandy’s most enchanting destinations. While the harbor is famous for its impressionist light and maritime charm, the town has quietly become a serious destination for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Whether you are craving delicate sushi, warming ramen, or precisely grilled yakitori, the local dining scene offers a surprising depth of options beyond the traditional crêperies and seafood brasseries.

The appeal of Japanese food in Honfleur lies in its contrast to the rich, cream-based sauces of Norman cooking. After a day of exploring the Eugène Boudin Museum or walking the Côte de Grâce, a meal built on fresh fish, vinegared rice, and umami-rich broths feels both restorative and exciting. Many of the town’s Japanese restaurants have adapted their menus to highlight local ingredients, creating a bridge between Normandy’s coastal bounty and Japan’s culinary precision.

Because Honfleur is a compact town, most of the best Japanese addresses are within easy walking distance of the old port. This makes it simple to compare menus, check daily specials, or even stop in for a quick lunch before heading to the beach at Deauville. However, popularity comes with a caveat: during the summer months and holiday weekends, the most sought-after tables fill up quickly, and reservations are strongly recommended.

Not all Japanese restaurants in Honfleur are created equal. Some focus on traditional Edomae-style sushi, while others lean into modern fusion, teppanyaki, or casual bento boxes. By knowing what each spot does best, you can match your meal to your mood, whether that is a romantic dinner for two or a relaxed family lunch after visiting the Naturospace butterfly house.

This guide is built around real local insight and practical dining knowledge. Each recommendation has been selected for its consistency, ingredient quality, and ability to deliver an authentic Japanese experience in the heart of Normandy. You will find everything from intimate counters run by passionate chefs to lively spots ideal for groups.

Below, you will find the twelve best Japanese restaurants in Honfleur, followed by a few essential tips to help you make the most of your meal.

We bought sushi Wednesday evening, and the prices were already high for such disappointing quality. The salmon and cream cheese California rolls weren't even fully sealed. (The salmon didn't even wrap around the edge and was cut extremely thin...) But the worst part was that the rice wasn't even cooked. The California rolls wrapped in rice paper weren't cut all the way through. You take one with your chopsticks and end up with three. They were the worst sushi and California rolls we've ever had. Awful. They were fit for the bin...

Always such a warm welcome from the staff! Smiling and friendly. Lots of promotions, and a nice tasting experience. And of course, the sushi is excellent, and the other dishes are just as good! I recommend it 100%! ☺️

Lovely dinner here tonight, sat out in the sunshine on the outdoor tables. The host was very friendly and keen to help, and the food options were varied and interesting. 2 great vegetarian options (out of 5 total options!) so definitely vegetarian friendly. The meals were full of vegetables, tasted fresh and were made using seasonal ingredients. Drinks and desserts were tasty and local too! Highly recommend this little gem ☺️
Ema Husníková★★★★★
A wonderful experience in the heart of Honfleur Restaurant Sauvage is a true gem – beautiful setting, friendly staff, and excellent food. We enjoyed a perfectly cooked main course, a light and tasty poke bowl, and delicious desserts. We were especially impressed by the Duo cerise estragon – an original and beautifully balanced dessert that’s a treat for both the taste buds and the eyes. A lovely surprise was the homemade cider – well-balanced and perfectly complementing the meal. The price-to-quality ratio is excellent. We highly recommend this place to anyone who appreciates honest, creative cuisine with character and heart.

An incredible place. They mostly cater for take away orders but if you are lucky enough to spot a free table (one inside and two outside) go for it! The menu changes weekly, produce is local and organic and comes from the chef's parents garden; you can also taste apple cider and juice produced by his father. The food was simply scrumptious, so so delicious. A separate note on the place design, it is slick and minimalistic-ly chic. Highly recommend

During my recent business trip, I stumbled upon a hidden gem of a restaurant that caught my attention on Google. With only two tables, this intimate spot offers a thoughtfully curated menu featuring meat, vegetarian, and fish dishes. Although it lacks the extensive setup of larger establishments, the chef’s dedication to crafting each dish is evident in the flavors. Don’t miss the ultimate highlight: the French toast dessert, which is absolutely top-notch and worth the visit alone.

Incredible restaurant with a rotating menu and great concept. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone in Honfleur, especially those seeking creative and inspired takes using local ingredients. We had a wonderful experience and cannot recommend enough.

Very friendly atmosphere with an approachable, yet elevated, menu. We enjoyed the beef tartare, served with Parmesan and shaved egg, accompanied by fries - absolute must try. Also enjoyed the monkfish and Katsudon-style fried chicken bowl with pickled cabbage. As to see the dessert tray - you won’t be able to pass. For those of us with limited language skills, there is a menu available in English.

We visited SaQuaNa during our first evening in Honfleur. And what a surprise it was. Food was amazing. The chef turns authentic dishes modern without losing any of the taste or appeal. The chef knows to pull of something you don't see often; the restaurant offers dishes from all over the world, which all meet the same high standards. How I know? Because we couldn't resist revisiting the restaurant after our first try. The staff is also worth mentioning. They are very welcoming and kind. They do their best to make you feel at home and offer you the best evening possible.
Muthulakshmi Subbiah★★★★★
SaQuaNa was a last minute pick for lunch during a day trip to Honfleur, and it ended up my favourite spot in the week I spent in France. The menu is seasonal and changes, with set options (starter + main course or main course + dessert, etc.) It was a BEAUTIFUL summer day, we got the following: 1. They started us off with some fantastic home made bread (paid extra for butter, which was also worth it) - 10/10 2. The starter was salmon, it has a lovely silken texture, in a sorrel brothy sauce - 10/10 This is probably one of the best dishes I've had in a fine dining restaurant 3. Our main was a mince beef filled, fried sea shell in a fresh tomato sauce - 8.5/10 it would have been a 10 but I thought the seashell pasta was a tad thick, especially when fried 4. Dessert - pistachio tart, and lemon meringue tart. 10/10 for both 5. Had the recommended pinot with the meal The bill was about 75 Euros for 2 people. The view of the street was so cute, and I loved looking at all their gorgeous bread on display. I highly recommend the place!

I’m giving this place a 5-star review because it was a nice discovery. We went in for an afternoon snack. The staff were welcoming and quick to come. The cakes are really delicious. There is a great variety in which a lady comes in person to explain to you each one. I recommend this place for a cosy afternoon snack out with friends or family or loved ones!

The staff at the restaurant warmly welcomed us, and the food not only tasted delicious but also felt light and healthy. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant added to the positive experience. During our visit, we were on a tour and had concerns about getting our food on time. The staff, in a reassuring and friendly manner, assured us that everything would be served promptly. Their caring attitude made the dining experience even more enjoyable.

A magical time with an artist, full of love and passion. One of our best culinary experiences in a very unexpected place. We paid 150€ for 2 and we'll be back for another of Leandro's menu some day. PS: Not a vegetarian friendly experience, it's meat or nothing.

A wonderful dining experience!! Plan ahead and make your reservation a day in advance for one of the best meals of your life. The cook and proprietor- Leo - ensured we had the most amazing dining experience. The ingredients (breads, meats cheeses, wines, etc.) are all thoughtfully chosen and grown/made in the region / close to the restaurant. Do yourself a favor and escape Honfleur’s busy downtown for a unique and delicious meal situated in a beautiful garden that’s also in the shadow of a trampoline park, which only adds interest and whimsy to the experience. Leo will be happy to recommend wines to pair with your meal — take his advice! He’s a pro and his choices helped elevate our meal. Easily my best meal in Honfleur.
Stephanie Wicks Thomas★★★★★
We live in the area, but last night was the first time we had tried this place. We went with 2 of our adult sons. The food was excellent and the portions are generous. We especially liked the pork with a smoked cream sauce. The service was also very good, friendly and knowledgeable. We will certainly go back!
Andrew Cane★★★★★
There are few places in life where you truly experience another persons passion, culture, and craft. If you’re looking for an authentic, well defined, distinguished experience, then look no further. With compassionate attention to your individual experience, the owner/master chef, enables you to fully appreciate each particularly crafted course. (Hint: ask for their pairing for wines). If you’re looking for a unique, awe inspiring sensational food experience, then this is your hidden gem.

The service was very nice. We enjoyed the wine recommendation and also dessert. However, the main course that we ordered was not up to expectation. Octopus was super rubbery (our fault for not voicing out). The potato that came with the steak was burnt. However, the service was good!

L'Oxalis was a really lovely dining experience overall. The service stood out right from the start — we were initially seated inside, but when we asked to move outdoors to enjoy the beautiful square, the staff were more than happy to accommodate us. Throughout the meal, the waiters were incredibly attentive, regularly checking in to make sure everything was okay. They were warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which made a big difference. The food was superb. The oysters were fresh, the foie gras was rich and delicious, and the mains were excellent — we had the lamb and the salmon, both cooked perfectly. The only small downside was the menu selection, as I would have liked to see a bit more seafood on offer. Dessert was decent, though not quite as strong as the rest of the meal. I tried the mille-feuille out of curiosity, but it didn’t fully win me over. Overall, it’s a very good restaurant with fantastic service and high-quality food. I’d definitely recommend it.
Lauren Ashby★★★★★
Really excellent food. I had the fish of the day, served with a quinoa risotto in a saffron and shellfish sauce. My husband had the tataki. Both perfectly made. For our daughter it was fish of the day with best mashed potato ever and lovelycarrots. Kind and considerate wait staff. Great find!
Gee Thomson★★★★★
We’ve been in France, Brittany and Normandy for two weeks and to be frank the meals out - from cheap to expensive -have been mixed. However at L Oxalis we arrived at what we wanted from French cooking. Not overcomplicated, great sources, interesting choices, and fantastic tastes. A nice place to finish.
Dmitry K★★★★★
A wonderful restaurant showcasing the best of French cuisine. Fresh, locally sourced seafood takes center stage, complemented by attentive service and a creative menu with refined presentation. The oysters and shellfish are exceptionally fresh — truly a highlight of the dining experience.

Omg. Just wow. We were absolutely starving after flying into paris and driving over and decided on the prefix lunch. What a treat that was. A little yogurt with a fruit jam and a biscuit to start with, along with a coffee product and a juice blend, followed by a dish with salad, savory biscuits, smoked turkey/salmon, eggs, potatoes. When we were in a food coma, they brought another sampler of 4 desserts. All absolutely delicious! This gem makes a trip to honfluer worth it in its own.
Jean Pierre Bisilliat★★★★☆
Loved everything about this place. I gave 4 stars because they really should have a totally separate menu for the items they serve at different times. I saw things I wanted but couldn’t get both time I went. The food was delicious and the croissants are perfection! The dish with sweet potato waffles was spectacular! See photo..

A must during your stay in Honfleur. We love the food, the service is always excellent, very kid friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere! Definitely order the pain perdu.
Regina Paltis★★★★☆
I have mixed feelings about this place. We arrived between breakfast and lunch. We were seated right away but it took us 10 mins to get a menu and then another 5 mins for a waitress to take our drink order and we didn't get our drinks for 25 mins after that. By this point, I was pretty mad. Eventually our food was brought out, and it was very good, so that made up for the wait slightly. My recommendation would be to come here after 11 am. Anything before that is super slow and the menu is very minimal before that time. On a positive note, it's a very cute atmosphere, both inside and outside. The issue seemed to be a lack of staff. What appeared to be a husband and wife team, they were both very nice when they came by, but very elusive because it was just the two of them. Food was yummy.
Paul Cook★★★★★
Wonderful, very accommodating and had wonderful breakfasts. The chef was lovely to chat to and sorted my wife’s breakfast to cater for her gluten intolerance. Lovely style and ambience to the place as well.

An absolutely incredible experience! We took a road trip through Normandy and discovered this wonderful restaurant in Honfleur. Some travel guides even call it one of the best restaurants in the city — and we can definitely see why! The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, with such a calm and elegant atmosphere. It’s honestly hard to put into words how delicious the food was. We had a wonderful evening and were even lucky enough to meet the chef afterwards, which made the experience even more special. Highly recommend this place!
Mathias Kanz★★★★★
On Christmas Day, we had the great pleasure of enjoying a seven-course meal at Le Lingot—an exceptional experience in every way. The menu was intuitively and ingeniously put together by the chef on the day and was impressive in every way. Whether it was lobster, scallops, caviar with oysters, or the perfectly cooked sous-vide veal with freshly grated truffles – every single course was culinary excellence and characterized by excellent product quality. The service was attentive, warm, and perfectly coordinated. The cozy, intimate atmosphere, accompanied by atmospheric chanson music, lent the evening a very special elegance. A particular highlight was the personal finale, when we had the opportunity to thank Frédéric personally for this wonderful meal. An evening of the highest standard – excellent and absolutely recommendable!
William Goolsby★★★★★
If you want a dining experiences like no other, make a reservation and go to Le Lingot. The Chef (Fred) prepares amazing dishes daily. There is no set menu, but go there with an open mind to be surprised and have your taste buds overwhelmed with amazing flavors. Don’t skimp and do only the 4 or 6 course. Splurge and do the full menu, you will not be disappointed. The wine selection is vast, start out with a glass of Champagne and then do a bottle that pairs well with the evening selection. They have multiple price points. The atmosphere is so elegant and nice. This is one of the top 3 restaurants I’ve ever dined. If you have a special someone and want a special dinner experience don’t miss this in Honfleur.
Matthias Hannemann★★★★★
We had an amazing evening in this incredibly beautiful restaurant in the middle of Honfleur. The food was outstanding and the service as well. Exquisite and extravagant. We will definitely come back as soon as we’re around! So if you want to spend a very special night with all sorts of different tastes, you have got to come here!
fred rozell★★★★★
I was nervous about eating here and being served what they cooked rather than being able to order what I wanted, but it was amazing. One of the best restaurants I ever ate in with fantastic service in a cozy and beautiful setting. All 7 courses were excellent. This restaurant deserves at least one Michelin star if not more and the price was very reasonable for the quality. If you are in town I would highly recommend reserving a table.

Tips for Choosing a Japanese Restaurant in Honfleur

A little planning goes a long way when dining out in a popular tourist town like Honfleur. These practical tips will help you avoid common pitfalls, secure the best seats, and order with confidence, so you can focus on enjoying the food rather than worrying about logistics.

1. Reserve Ahead During Peak Season

From June through September, Honfleur’s restaurant scene is under heavy pressure. Japanese spots with small dining rooms often cannot accommodate walk-ins after 7:30 PM. Call ahead or book online the day before, especially if you want a table with a view of the harbor or a quiet corner.

2. Look for Daily Fish Specials

Many Japanese chefs in Honfleur buy their fish from the same local suppliers as the town’s seafood restaurants. Ask if there is a “poisson du jour” or seasonal sashimi selection. This is often the freshest and most interesting part of the menu, showcasing Norman turbot, sea bass, or scallops prepared in a Japanese style.

3. Check the Rice Quality

Great sushi depends on rice as much as fish. When reading reviews or tasting your first piece, pay attention to the texture and seasoning of the rice. It should be slightly warm or room temperature, gently vinegared, and hold together without being dense. Restaurants that take rice seriously almost always take the rest of the menu seriously.

4. Consider Lunch for Better Value

Dinner menus in Honfleur can be pricey, but lunch offers exceptional value. Many Japanese restaurants serve bento boxes, donburi bowls, or set menus at midday for a fraction of the evening price. You will often get the same quality fish and a faster, quieter dining room.

5. Ask About Takeaway Options

If you are staying in a rental apartment or planning a picnic by the Seine estuary, many of the best Japanese kitchens in Honfleur offer takeaway sushi and noodle dishes. This can be a refreshing alternative to heavy restaurant meals and gives you the flexibility to eat on your own schedule.

Honfleur may be famous for its impressionist paintings and historic port, but its Japanese dining scene adds a deliciously unexpected layer to the town’s identity. Whether you are a local looking for a dependable weeknight meal or a visitor wanting a break from butter and cream, these twelve restaurants offer something genuinely rewarding.

The next time you find yourself wandering the narrow streets near the Vieux Bassin with a craving for clean flavors and precise cooking, you will know exactly where to go. Bon appétit, or as they say in Japan, itadakimasu.
