12 Best Japanese Restaurants in Arles

Arles may be celebrated worldwide for its Roman ruins and Van Gogh’s vivid landscapes, but its culinary scene is just as impressive. Nestled in the heart of Provence, this sun-drenched city offers a remarkable blend of traditional French gastronomy and contemporary international flavors. For locals and travelers alike, the search for an exceptional meal often leads beyond the bouillabaisse of Marseille to the intimate dining rooms of Arles.

While Provençal cuisine typically conjures images of olive oil, garlic, and fresh vegetables, the local appetite for Asian cuisine has grown significantly. Japanese food, in particular, has carved out a distinct niche in the city’s food culture. From delicate sushi platters to comforting bowls of ramen, the Japanese restaurants in Arles provide a refreshing contrast to the heavier, meat-centric dishes of traditional regional cooking.

The appeal of Japanese cuisine lies in its precision, freshness, and balance. In a region that values high-quality produce, it is no surprise that Arles has embraced the art of sushi and sashimi. Chefs here often incorporate local Mediterranean ingredients into their menus, creating a unique fusion that respects both Japanese tradition and Provençal terroir.

However, finding authentic Japanese food in a historic French town can be a challenge. The difference between a truly memorable meal and a mediocre one often comes down to the quality of the rice, the freshness of the fish, and the skill of the sushi chef. That is why we have curated a list of the most reliable and highly recommended spots in the city.

Whether you are looking for a quick takeaway bento box to enjoy by the Rhône or a sit-down experience with expertly rolled maki, Arles has something to satisfy your craving. Our selection focuses on establishments that consistently deliver on quality, atmosphere, and value for money.

Below, you will find the top Japanese dining destinations in Arles. Each entry has been evaluated based on ingredient quality, authenticity, customer service, and overall dining experience.

We took the lunch menu (22€ for 3 meal set). The gyozas were very good, with homemade dough and everything. There were many options like chicken curry, veggies and pork. The ramen (Sapporo style in the picture) were tasty, but the toppings were lukewarm. They had many desserts, we took the ice cream mochi, with a succulent sorbet inside. The staff were nice, though a bit pushy to get our orders at first. Overall, great place, given the limited resources for Asian cuisine they have in France.
Berto Salgado★★★★★
The food was delicious and flavorful. Got the Hakata Ramen and the broth was so tasty. They had a special going on for lunch when we went and it was €22 to get four pieces of gyoza, mochi, and your choice of ramen.

Post edit after owner reaction: YES, I am a real customer and YES I visited your restaurant in July. I came with 2 friends for lunch in an empty restaurant. We had to wait for the waitress to finish whatever she was doing to be waited. And she was making a face to show us we were far to be her priority. Then, we constantly had to hail her to get her attention to get our order. The ramen was bland, tasteless and I had stomach pain in the afternoon so if you are sick of "fake" reviews, well I was sick by food poisoning so instead of constantly pointing your fingers towards unhappy customers maybe you should introspect and realise hospitality business might not be for you. There are definitely better options for Japanese food in Arles where food is authentic and where you feel welcomed. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Not a big fan of their ramen. One of the worst i ever had to be honest... and the service was cold and unpersonal. On top of that, I was sick after eating there...

Stamina ramen had great taste (better than many ramen we had while living in Japan !). Both pork and vegetable soups were rich of umami taste. It’s such a perfect dish for winter !

Highly recommended!!!! We live in the area and are often desperate for something a bit different to eat. The ramen here is better than many places I’ve been to in NYC, London and even Tokyo! I usually get the Hakata Ramen. Definitely go to Izakayan, you won’t be disappointed

Ramen We visited this restaurant on the recommendation of our apartment host and from a local lady we met in Arles. This is a good option for ramen. It's not totally authentic - but it's still very good. We weren't keen on the yakisoba - the sauce tasted quite strange to my fussy Asian palate.

After being treated so bad by the staff at IZAKAYAN by WA-FOU……we wandered into this place and it was perfect!! This has to be some of the best ramen and handmade pot stickers we have ever had. Great little corner with amazing customer service! Service was quick, atmosphere was relaxed and fun, and we watched a ton of Togo delivers go out so we knew it was going to be good from the start!
Junho Sung★★★★★
I really enjoyed Soyu Ramen with the firm noodles which was very authentic Japanese style ramen. Gyoza was such a well cooked and very enjoyable.
Emilia Lin★★★★★
Nice Japanese restaurant. The ramen is really tasty. We went at lunch and it wasn’t very busy.

Leaving feeling very nourished! The vegan ramen was very delicious; excellent broth, noodles, and toppings. Added an egg for protein and started the meal with their stewed aubergine special of the day. So happy we found this spot! A vegetarian's dream in Arles. Highly recommendable. Update: we went back a second time the next day for the soy mean Katsudon and the Vegan Yakisoba. Delicious as well! If you can't take another avocado toast, this is the place to eat.

Clean place, fast service, the staff was very nice. I would definitely recomment this place. The teriyaki chicken topping was insanely good and the noodles and the bubble tea were also yummy. Mind that there's not toilet in this restauran.

We are eating Japanese food every week so our analysis is based on facts : - Starters and main dish were served at the same time without any warning. So your food gets cold by the time you finish your entrée. - Sushi tasted decent but exactly the same quality you find at your local grocery store - Ramen were bland, just boring to eat and pasta & veggies overcooked

Le Café Japonais is a great little stop near the Arènes d’Arles. The cold brew was very good, but the real selling point is the view of the Roman arena, which makes it an especially nice place to sit for a while. Good coffee, excellent setting, and an easy recommendation if you’re exploring this part of Arles.
Anca Tinc★★★★★
Le Café Japonais is a good option if you’re not in a rush and have the time to actually enjoy your coffee on spot. They don’t do take away and I think that’s great. They have onigiris if you’re looking for something salty. The matcha tea cake was good, but slightly on the drier side. Service is cool, the lady behind the bar was friendly and helpful. We took some chairs from indoors and placed them outside, since the weather was nice and the surroundings are beautiful (they’re next to the Amphitheater) and she was fine with that. Will stop by again. The coffee was ok.
Loic Dumas★★★★★
Very nice people, amazing coffee (locally roasted), wagashi and cakes. What else can you ask for? Actually yes, they regularly organise events (music, art, etc.)
Jon★☆☆☆☆
I had an odd experience at this cafe. I was waiting outside for café to open, a Chinese person budged me. I move to the front again as I am in a hurry and I respect queuing. The owner when opening a minute later mistook me for the person budging! I correct her and tell her I was actually here first. She took my order but was quite cold to me. She then served the Chinese person their coffee at same time as me. The owner speaks French, Japanese, and English well. I think the coffee is good. But the yuzu bread was terribly dry and cost 4€. I would not order bread again from here. I was saddened by the lack of おもてなしの心. I have lived in Japan before and I think maybe this café is more western in hospitality. 😔
Alex Conu★★★★☆
The quality of the coffee was inconsistent. Got two flat whites. One was good but the other one was quite bad. The yuzu cake was very dry. Still, the good flat white was probably the second best coffee I had in Arles.

Delicious authentic fresh Japanese food. The restaurant was extremely clean and the decor was fitting combing Japanese/French perfectly. Ordered takeaway. Prawn noodles and chicken noodles. It was alright. Quite greasy and bland. The chicken noodles had veg in but the prawn noodles came with an odd pepper or two. Ordered two bottles of asahi larger with it and didn't realise until back at the hotel that they weren't in the bag. So pretty bad service all round. Thought we'd give it another go only to find that they were closed 45 minutes before closing time. Ahh well won't waste money there again.

This was one of the best meals of my life. The flavors, textures, quality, and presentation of each dish are superb and unique. I also enjoyed the wine pairing immensely. I actually felt a pang of sadness midway through the meal that I do not live closer to Arles, and may not be able to experience Chef Céline Pham's brilliance again for a while. Unlike anything I have ever tasted before - truly transportive, and an homage to her Vietnamese heritage that meets modern French cuisine. Best pho I’ve ever tasted! The service by a mainly female, stellar team, is warm and impeccable. The space, nestled in a 13th century chapel, is beautiful and inviting. Their star is rising.⭐️
Noemi★★★★★
No photos because all our attention was on the impeccable food. It’s a tasting menu, just below €50 at lunch time and below €80 at dinner time. We went for lunch. The service is precise and attentive, no fussing, and each dish was exquisite, quite complex but all working together. I love that the food manages to be fairly multi layered and high end - but at the same time honest, made with purpose.
Martyna Rudžionytė★★★★★
10/10 experience - all the dishes took us through a journey. Very interesting concepts and food combinations. Loved the service and wine pairing was next level. Will do my best to come back, thanks for unforgettable evening.
Thomas Bretthauer★★★★★
It was a perfect night. The chef has her very own signature and the dishes were wonderfully composed. Also the wine pairings were innovative and distinct.
Cindy W★★★★★
We drove here from Avignon based on the recommendation of our bnb host. And it was worth the round trip drive. We got lucky with the same day reservation. The restaurant was very charming and intimate without mainly tables set up for a party of 2. Inari offered a 5-course meal at about 55 euros. The sommelier gave us great recommended pairing for our meal. We enjoyed watching the chef cook in an open kitchen setting. Just note that you will most likely catch the smell of food on your hair or clothing. All the dishes were beautiful with a twist of Vietnamese fare. The pace in between serving each course was perfect. Don’t think twice - come here and enjoy some delicious food.

Essential Tips for Choosing the Best Japanese Food in Arles

Finding a great Japanese restaurant requires a bit more scrutiny than looking for a standard brasserie. The subtlety of the cuisine means that quality can vary dramatically from one establishment to the next. To ensure you have the best possible dining experience, keep the following practical advice in mind when reviewing your options in Arles.

Check the Rice Quality

In Japanese cuisine, rice is the soul of the dish. If the sushi rice is dry, hard, or overly vinegared, the meal will fail regardless of how fresh the fish is. Look for restaurants that use short-grain Japanese rice and season it properly. A good indicator of a quality establishment is rice that holds together without being mushy and has a slight gloss.

Look for Seasonal Local Fish

While authentic Japanese restaurants often import specific fish from Japan, the best chefs in Arles take advantage of Mediterranean catches. Ask if the restaurant offers daily specials featuring local fish like sea bream (daurade) or red mullet (rouget). This not only ensures freshness but also provides a unique Provençal twist on traditional sashimi.

Avoid All-You-Can-Eat Traps

While "eat as much as you like" formats can be tempting for hungry travelers, they often compromise on quality. These restaurants tend to focus on quantity over the precision required for good sushi. If you are looking for an authentic experience, opt for à la carte menus or set menus (formules) that highlight the chef’s craftsmanship.

Observe the Wasabi and Ginger

A small but telling detail is the condiments served with your meal. High-quality restaurants typically serve real wasabi (or a high-grade blend) and house-pickled ginger (gari). If the ginger is artificially bright pink and the wasabi is a uniform neon green paste with a harsh chemical taste, it is usually a sign that shortcuts are being taken in the kitchen.

Consider the Timing

Arles follows the traditional French dining schedule, which means many restaurants close between lunch and dinner service. Japanese restaurants are often the exception, sometimes offering continuous service. However, to get the freshest fish deliveries, it is often best to dine during peak hours when turnover is high, ensuring that ingredients have not been sitting out.

Exploring the Japanese culinary landscape in Arles offers a delightful break from the traditional Provençal dining routine. It is a testament to the city’s ability to embrace global flavors while maintaining the high standards of French hospitality. Whether you are a strict traditionalist or an adventurous foodie, the precision and care found in these establishments are sure to impress.

As you wander through the ancient streets of Arles, let your palate travel to the East. The combination of French dining etiquette and Japanese culinary artistry creates a memorable experience that stands out in this historic region. Enjoy the journey, and bon appétit—or as they say in Japan, itadakimasu.
